The Publisher Says: Remember that hunky guy on YouTube who caught your eye? The one with the awesome pecs and killer smile? I bet you couldn't stop watching his videos. Just imagine if you had a chance to meet him and all your fantasies started coming true. There's only one catch: Between you and your dream guy is his less-than-pleased boyfriend. My Review: That was a charming 50-page freebie that I am very pleased to have read. Sweet doofus meets his high-school crush, now a hawt slab o' beef; boyfriend of hawtness is visibly unhappy about the luuuv connection; and then...nothing happens.

I like that.

Nothing happens because doofus has a sense of fair play and empathy: Would he want *his* man in the arms of another? No. So, no.

Don't get me wrong, I like the smexy tales of boys doin' the nasty on every flat surface and many vertical ones, too. But there's more to life than porn. (I can't believe I just typed that.) Once, about a squillion years ago, I fell in love with the man I went to see the movie Maurice with. We weren't either of us newbies. We watched the film, sighed in the same places, held hands (and that's all!) as we watched the men tangle their lusts and loves up, and even have an implied happy ending (in the non-massage-parlor sense). As it was 1988, the happy ending was not able to be explicit.

As we left the theater, I sighed something approving about how sweet it all was, and BJ gave me the side-eye before saying, "What do you think those guys are gonna talk about after a year?"

And that, my chick-a-biddies, is all it took for me to know I'd found the real thing. Someone who found the same plot holes in life that I found, who wasn't more interested in the wrapping paper than the gift. And I was right. When he died four years later, it was a horrible wrench, and I miss him still. But, like Evan the doofus, I knew what was going to make me happy, and waited for my happiness to catch up to where I already was.

Never, ever been sorry a minute, no matter that it ended long, long before it should have. And that's what this story put me in mind of, that realization that "this is it, this is what I waited for," and I enjoyed every minute I had of it. I expect these men will too. So yeah...a good story.

In 50 pages, you don't expect a whole lot of character development. I found the boyfriend, Orlando, a bit too hastily limned, and knocked off a star for Tony the hunk's facile presentation...a *little* depth would've been welcome...and the throwaway character of Julie, the doofus's fag hag, needed a more complete role. None of these are fatal flaws. They're points of information, and the issues raised would raise this very solid, enjoyable tale into a novella I'd be warbling from the rooftops about.

It's free on your Kindle today, 9 July 2014. Get it, read it, pass a pleasant half-hour and support a promising writer with a lot more to say.

Quirky and absolutely adorable...
"...Can you get a broken heart without being with someone? Can wanting to fall in love so bad make that happen?”
I think we all have stars in our eyes for at least one celebrity. Those larger than life people who we only know only through the edited, scripted, photoshopped versions we're allowed to see.

Like and Subscribe is the story of what happens when one man meets his celebrity crush, and learns that not everything is as perfect as it appears through a computer screen...

Evan Hansen
Evan didn’t blush or chastise himself. Desperation was an old acquaintance, the kind he could share a comfortable silence with. Besides, his infatuation with Tony was hardly new.
Evan has had a crush on Tony since high school. His infatuation skyrocketed when his crush became a YouTube star, posting (often shirtless) videos about his life to thousands of followers.

Tony Taylor
Free time and the Internet. Never a good combination.
Tony uses his online videos to share himself with the world. It's easy for Evan to feel like he knows Tony inside and out, so when he unexpectedly runs into Tony at a Halloween party, it seems like a dream. Unfortunately, his dream come true comes with one major hurdle - Tony's boyfriend...

Orlando Logan
"[Tony's] got this massive hole in his ego, and I tried my best to fill it up with love and admiration, but it wasn't enough..."
Orlando is not thrilled about he blast from the past who has caught Tony's eye. Tony is flirting freely and it quickly becomes apparent to Evan that the relationship between Orlando and Tony is crumbling...

When Tony invites Evan over for some quality time, will Evan take the opportunity to claim his heart's desire?

This was a positively adorable (if short) read! If you needed another reason to read it, last time I checked it was free on the Kindle Store... Or you can borrow a copy from me!

Evan has a crush on the Youtube “star” Tony Taylor, whom he knows from high school. Evan runs into Tony at a Halloween party, and though he thinks he has no chance with him, Tony asks him out next day.

I hated this book up until 70%.

I didn’t like Evan’s shallow attitude, raving about how beautiful and perfect Tony is and how he is a “celebrity” twice per page.

I didn’t like the cliché best friend, Julie, who was in love with Evan, and asked him every day if he had turned straight yet.

And I didn’t like Tony, who invited Evan over but not even stopped playing a video game to greet him, and when Evan didn’t want to join him, he continued playing.

I appreciate the ending, and it could have been sweet if it hadn’t been so C-grade romantic movie-like, and the characters hadn’t been either good or bad with nothing in between.

(The reason I've read it twice is that I didn't review it for the first time, and I didn't remember a word of it...)

3.7 Stars - Thumbs up! Heartwarming cute with less than 2 hrs audio listening

A shortie M/M audiobook by Jay Bell. Actually my very first romance by him. — 1:46 hours narrated by Kevin R. Free.

Evan is daydreaming about a hunky shirtless guy on YouTube who he went to highschool (just the biology class) with. Already back then was Tony a popular guy and of course never noticed the chubby nobody boy Evan. — Then years later on a Halloween party are Orlando and...

This was for sure a well-invested $2 novella surprise
Emotional, NA-sweet, cute as sugar, some important life-stuff (to think more about) and no on page steam ... but lovely romantic in the end. I'm glad and it must soon be more reads from this writers (NA) M/M pile.

I LIKE - short and sweet

I appreciated how the characters were allowed to gradually reveal themselves through their words and actions. Some authors are very heavy-handed about trying to direct readers' sympathies, apparently not trusting that their readers will "get it" unless they're whacked vigorously and repeatedly with the clue stick. In this short story, Jay Bell lets us figure it out for ourselves. It's the first thing of his I've read, and it leaves me interested in trying more.

Note: I don't usually give star ratings to short fiction.

This was just so wtf ...

This book doesn’t really have content, okay it’s just a few pages but still ... I think the lesson to be learned from this book is that you never really know someone for the person they are online

This book was so meh that I don't remember the names of the characters ... Basically our main character has a crush on a youtuber with whom he went to school. He is convinced that if they met, it would be love at first sight because he looks perfect to him ... But when he really knows him better he sees that this youtuber is nothing like he expected and that everything he puts in the channel it's a lie.

The writing is not bad, maybe I read more books by this author but this was a miss.

I’ll keep this brief…

Gawwwwwww…I kinda ADORED this short story! It was just…sweeeeet.

It helps that it feels a familiar tale to me (maybe all of us?) who spend a lot of time online and are well-versed with “internet celebs”.

Evan has a massive crush on YouTube superstar, and former high school crush, Tony. This story tells the story of how they meet up again, the cost of stardom, and how “personalities” don’t always show the true side of celebrity. Throw in an intriguing 3rd character, Orlando, and you have a quick, fun, slightly predictable, but entertaining read.

I heart Jay Bell’s writing style.

Recommended…I mean, it takes all of maybe 30 minutes (tops!) to read! Do it.

Finished, but now - what to write? I liked it, but I couldn't really get warm with Evan. For a 20something on the one hand he acted a bit immature, but then there were glimpses, during his talks with Orlando, where he came across much more grown up. On the one hand nothing much happened, on the other too much back and forth with Evan and his crush. Sorry, can't say it better. I liked it but I didn't love it.
Therefore 3.5 stars.

Short, sweet and so funny at times that I had to stop to catch my breath.

I swear!! That Panther and Squirrel thing had me in fits! (Picture brain!)

Arrrrrrrrr sooo HAWT! - Or NOT!! HAHAHAHHAHAHAHHA

The story was sweet and Evan has a hysterical best friend. I think for something this short, it was done really well.

A sweet, quick, FREE read about the joys and disappointments of love and the internet.

I could really see and understand Evan in this story. He made me giggle on my train ride home last night. Internet crushes are brutal and addictive and safe in so many ways. But real life always seems to find a way in. Come take a look behind the curtain with Evan.

This might have been my first Jay Bell. How could that be? I have to read more.

I really like Jay's writing but I don't always love the direction his stories take me.
It's like I'm driving along on the freeway, singing along to a great tune and I see my exit. But...the car won't go where I want it to.
Then the next exit comes along and the car merges itself to the exit. It's okay.
It's a fine place to be...once I'm there.
But.
It's not where I wanted to go.
Yep. That pretty much sums up how my ride's with Bell end up.

I am glad this time though. Much better...destination.

This was my first BR with Marco (and hopefully not the last)
 photo lick-8.gif

And now to the story, it was nice, it was a fluffy and cute read, it was so predictable that I was tempted to make a game out of it. Write down what you think happens next, then read, then check....I would have scored really high.

The writing was good, there had been some funny moments in it, which actually are the reason I still liked it.

Toby was...as expected (at least by me) a total douchebag...but a hot one.
Evan was a tiny little bit stupid sometimes, the fact that he really was a good guy and quite honorable redeemed him for me.
Orlando, well, boy, I liked him but I still wonder why he did all he did.

The stupid things people do for love....

I realise that I'm not really clicking with Jay Bell's MCs, this is the second time it happens to me. It's probably me. But I still was entertained enough to like it :)

A sweet m/m story which reminds me of a version of Cyrano de Bergerac, but from the perspective of "Roxane".

Or maybe that's just me. Whatever...it's cute and the narrator does a good job.

What a wonderful, suprising and totally endearing feel-good treat with that excellent writing we all love. ( I just adore Jay Bell's style!) A total bonus is the funny and a very likeable realistic cast :)

Like and Subscribe is fun and refreshing with a rather deep story that ends with such a beautiful fluff - literally a cherry on top of a rocky road vanilla fudge sundae.

And just like such a yummy sundae this sweet little read leaves me craving for more and more! (I can't wait for Spring to be released ) - I missed your writing Mr. Bell <3

I really really enjoyed this short but not too short book! :)

Oh and what a cute and totally fitting cover that is! cudos to your man! :)

I loved the idea of this story.
Evan has been crushing on his YouTube hero forever. He feels like he knows him, understands him and well he's hot and shirtless in the videos too.
Evan remembers Tony from high school and when an impossible chance has him actually meeting his crush...
But somehow something is off, Tony isn't quite like he'd thought he would be....but sometimes the things that are right in front of your nose are what you've been looking for all along.
Like I said, the idea is cute and original, I also loved the resolution. I wish it had been a bit longer and more details had been included, but alas, it's a freebie and it had a cute three -legged dog.

Definitely more of a 3.5 but it worked as story. I enjoyed it, it made me laugh like Something Like Summer which I'm no longer certain is Bell's intention but I find it funny. Evan I thought really captured the adoring fan culture of online stars so easily that it was kind of sad. But Tony was a dick in the end and Orlando was a sweetheart. Turns out you can't necessarily trust the person on the screen a lesson well taught I'd think.

How super cute was this?! I will admit that I considered DNFin' it because I was afraid but I'm glad it didn't go that way and I thought it was really adorable!
The furries thing had me in stitches too...different strokes, yeah?

I loved the premise and the point about celebrity. It reminded me of the only celebrity encounter I have ever had...which was completely by accident and disillusioning to the point of damn near traumatizing me!!

I liked where the romance went, but it definitely needed a little more development. Mostly that's just due to the length, but this was definitely worthwhile when in need of a boost from a little shortie.

I liked the whole Youtuber aspect of this but overall it was just fine.

It was also only 50 pages long so there's obviously not much to go off of. I won't be giving this a rating because I just can't ever give short stories ratings, for some reason.

"...I was in the dark. I was falling hard, with an open heart...I’m wide awake and now it’s clear to me, that everything you see, ain’t always what it seems..." ~ Katy Perry

Evan, from 'Like and Subscribe' by Jay Bell, is totally enamored with a guy on the internet. To add a note of credibility, he knows Tony is a real person because they went to high school together, although they weren't friends. All he sees on YouTube is this gorgeous guy with a kick-ass body, charming personality, and what appears to be exceptional sensitivity.

When he runs into Tony at a party, he can't believe his luck, but after spending some time with Tony, he begins to question how much of Tony's persona is genuine. Evan tries to give him the benefit of the doubt; but finds it increasingly difficult not to be disillusioned with him. One of Evan's major concerns his obviously one-sided open relationship with his boyfriend, Orlando. He sees the pain in Orlando's eyes and it takes all the excitement out of being with Tony but it's painful to give up on a dream. Evan and Orlando both see Tony's potential, but are sadly forced to admit he is never going to live up to it. He's never going to be the man that Evan or Orlando need to be happy.

This is an endearing love story which, although it may be short in length, is certainly not short on insight and significance. Jay packs in a lot of meaning and purpose in his prose while presenting the issue of needing to see clearly during the time at which it's especially difficult to do so, with matters of the heart. I recommend this tasty morsel of wisdom and entertainment to everyone who believes that true love will find a way. Thanks, Jay, for sharing your gift with the world.

What a nice little holiday gift from Jay Bell. This is a cute and clever and insightful story about perceptions and reality. I really liked Julie and Evan's relationship and I enjoyed their honesty :)

It was interesting to watch Evan's curiosity and then his disillusionment and then his dawning realization about what is true, what is for the camera and what really is desirable. Evan is also funny and cute and self-deprecating in a really nice way.

What a great little story. Nicely done :)

That was a nice, short novella. Pleasant to read and nothing in it to give you indigestion or sweaty palms. I do hope this doesn't sound negative because that is not the way it's meant.
If you need to chill out or relax or just have too many thoughts filling our head to really get involved in something angsty and emotionally draining, and if you want to read something well written this is a great choice. Just go for it.
