I loved this story - it's hot as hell, unapologetically realistic about NHL life, and completely topical. It also features one of my favorite characters ever: Mike Brouwer. Mike is an aging NHL enforcer. Liam is a baby-faced rookie who has everything it takes to be a star. But right now, all Liam wants is Mike. What starts out as a fuck quickly becomes a lot more for both of them.
Mike narrates the entire story, and he's a grouchy, taciturn, and generally unfriendly guy who much to his disgust finds himself in a relationship with an annoyingly bubbly kid half his age. The author has the voice of Mike's character tuned absolutely perfectly; he's funny and insightful and foolish and tragic, and all you want is more, more, more. Liam is also great; he's a demanding little shit who knows what he wants and goes after it. Mike has absolutely no chance against him. Watching him through Mike's eyes is a delight.
There's angst aplenty in this story, and it's what elevates this from hot and funny to something much more. You'll ache and worry for Mike; you'll hate him and love him and want to knock him in the head (except he doesn't need any more blows to the head).
I really love this writer; her characters are insistently complex and the relationships are messy and unpredictable. And my God is she funny. She is not gentle with her readers; she is not afraid to push her characters places we might prefer she didn't, nor to take plot lines down roads that can break the readers' hearts. But in the end, she makes it worth your while.
And maybe the best part is that imogenedisease continues Mike & Liam's story on her Tumblr (http://youcouldmakealife.tumblr.com/), so even though the official story is over, you can get drabbles of Mike beyond (and between) the story "proper". And sometimes her readers can even bully her into writing more (which we did in this case!).
Really good read, but terrible ending, not even really a proper ending - characters re-connected for a night then just left everything as a 'maybe'/unknown. It seems like there should be a sequel, but there isn't. I also was a little confused with the time jumps - it was not clear to me how long the MC's were together at one stage and how long they had been apart until the ages were discussed

I just recently found imogenedisease and have loved every one of her stories. I cannot rave enough about all of her main characters, the loveliness of her writing style and the authentic feel of the world she has created. Just lovely.
