Okay, this is piss, one of the laziest attempts at a sequel i've seen in a while, it's like the author has an idea for three things that need to happen in the book and then writes as if the rest will be filled in by an AI that will make other things happen without needing to plan them.

On worldbuilding, it still feels so catastrophically lifeless, we have very few and fixed locations when scenes happen (the prison, Bane manor, the Academy, Avis Apothecary) and they are always only characterized by the people that live in them, we don't really know what the Apothecary looks like or what Fallon does in it since we're only told what Avis tells the MC when we're there, the prison cell? It's just a prison cell, there's nothing in there and we don't see the rest of the place where Ash and Shadow members live, we only talk to the guard and the friendly prisoner when we're there; Bane Manor? Yeah we get an initial description when we see it for the first time, but nothing ever happens when we're there, it's just a house, i actually forgot we were moved there until the maid and the burtler came into the story, why? Because we're not told ANYTHING about the surrounding, everyone feels like NPCs in a video game, they give their assegned two lines of dialogue and walk back and forth between their two tasks. Like, look at the magic hidden city of demi god fae we've never heard of before: we walk in, describe two buildings, enter an empty room and talk to the monk, then we're out, that's it, that's all there is to this legendary city.

On to the magic system, well

"Not relevant to our task, but with training, a Bane royal could be able to control someone’s will, bending it to their liking.

Marissa hasn't yet done this because...

Also:

It looked like a creature was trying to erupt through a plastic bag

So...they have plastic, meaning they have oil...and they dont have cars?

On to the plot: well, as I said the author had like three things she wanted to do in this book, so she wrote those three scenes down and they summed up roughly 25 pages, then realized she needed to justify writing a whole book so she filled in random interactions to fill the page count, then she realized that the randomly filled nothing didn't flow naturally into the three scenes about things actually happening, so she created a serie of random events to justify those scenes taking place, like the dude showing up in Ayrion's dream and the Grim randomly allowing Fallon to meet Ayrion so he can tell her she needs to look for this guy, but wait, this city is hidden and there's a whole ritual to be admitted...nevermind she goes in and out and the dude tells her everything. Talking about that: the fucking super magic fae come in, tell her "this will be the plot for the next book and a quarter" and then fuck off. It's as close as it gets to the original definition of deus ex machina. AND THEN WE DO IT A SECOND FUCKING TIME WITH THE QUORUM. (By the way, Ayrion will fight the Grim for her of course, she wont actually die)

Characters were probably the worst part of the last book and i gotta say, this one somehow made them worse

The reinstablishment of Hayes as a "good guy" is one of the most juvenile backwalking i've ever seen.
Ah we dont like this guy because he dumped our friend at the ball last minute.
But here he is teaching healing magic, THEN we walk to work and here he is asking about making a free clinic in the West side (also he's been with our store owner and we've never mentioned this before despite Avis already knowing he was Eden's boyfriend at the time) THEN we walk to the East side and he's randomly in the middle of the street talking to his dad, in a clever and nuance exchange which roughly goes like:

"Dad, i want to be a goodman"
"No, i am an evil father and you will be evil too"
"But i dont want to be and evilman"
Domestic abuse
"Yes father, i am powerless against you"

ALL IN THE SPAN OF AN EVENING

First, this exchange would NOT be recurring in the middle of the road, as no nobleman would like himself to be seen out in the open like that, but most importantly, this isn't usually the way a character who's in his twenties responds to what barely qualifies as domestic abuse, expecially someome who is CLEARLY NOT a submissive and shy character.
But most of all, THIS IS ALL FOR NOTHING, Hayes does basically nothing for the rest of the story and what little he did someone else could have done it instead, the fuck was that focus on him at the beginning?

For the other recurring characters, they are reduced to very few interactions (Eden is barely present) and what little they have is absolutely mindboggling (why the fuck is Fallon's friend group now composed of Fallon, her boyfriend, her best friend and two dudes who dumped her best friend? Like wtf is going on? Why did we randomly set up this "Ayden actually likes Eden" at the end of the last book, to then say "weeeell, actually not", for what narrative purpose does Ayden still like her? He has no chance, he never had any, so...?). On the flip side the queen is absolutely mental, she KNOWS Fallon will turn out bad and she points it out multiple times, but she still lets her in on all of her secrets and into her Royal Guard basically. Despite her role being obviously suited mich better for an opposing character or straight up an antagonist, the story hates conflict so much that it just lands her into this weird role of "muh" between a "team leader" and the woman who cursed an unborn child to feel eternal pain, that said we then randomly switch back to an antagonist on the romance part since she doesn't want Ayrion to be with Fallon, but THAT is not even a conflict since he just says "lol no"

Solana instantly felt regret for cursing her unborn child, an innocent party in all of this.

Yeah yeah, no. You ain't fooling anyone with this sob story, she made a VERY specific curse, she knew what she was doing. ALSO she can't rember how her family is composed.

“That is the reason she cursed me to never have children and that my heir would die if I harmed you. She was ensuring that my line would die out, especially if I tried to take hers.”

You're forgetting you have TWO heirs my G

Ayrion is super meh, he has this semblance of a corruption arc in jail, but it turns out ACTUALLY everything's fine and he actually just got all the benefits and none of the trauma that comes with those experiences, he also got a friend that we will see in the next book. Yay I guess, nothing really happend, he's just the same person as the when died in the ballroom, cool.

"I won’t willingly make a widow and orphans of anyone.”

Anyone? You're saying this to the girl you JUST confessed everlasting love to? It's absolutely mental how the author doesn't see the logical dissonance.

Lastly Fallon is super good and she's super selfless and good and nice and good and holy and good and this is probably the least believable person i've ever read about. It's VERY clear she's a self insert of the author and so she needed to be always good and always thinking about the others and whatnot, it's so boring to have a person driven by such unrealistic and etheral concepts that she's quite litterally out of this world. Also, she's stupid:

I’d stupidly held out a bit of hope that she might actually want a relationship with me.

No you didn't, you never mentioned this, so you're just bullshitting

“You might be consumed with the fact that you’re literally giving away parts of your life, but I was enthralled with the lives I was saving.”

As if Ayrion didn't like saving people.

Writing style: first the recurring use of modern slang like "bestie", ASAP and such, but even worse the second grade level explanations:

I was hoping Eden was going to be okay with this, but after seeing how his father treated him, I wanted to give him a second chance.

We're litterally spelling shit out for the reader girl. Come on.

She nodded, but I could see in her eyes she’d forgiven him. It was a good lesson for the both of us. No one knew what someone was dealing with in private.

This is just painful to read

And lastly on the writing style, what the hell was that switch between elementary school "we're all friends and it's all nice and we're all holding hands" to then add in a random kiss scene with vocabolary i've only seen used in adult genre? It felt like she needed to say "Okay people, in the next book i' gonna write a YA sex scene for these two, so we're gonna need to make it clear we're not just kids scared of kissing and holding hands, ok?" And pulled up an Adult romance to just copy the words used so she made it clear where this was going.

Action is barely present and is super lazy, like, The Grim just...doesn't like to win fights and is just there to mess with the Maven Healers right? There is no way he's THAT weak.
Scenery is very bland and it's never used to fill in the dialogue by inteacting with objects around us, so past the initial description it always seems like we're talking in blanc ethereal spaces where nothing is happening

Themes, uh, always give second chances? Or third, or fifth, or tenth, i guess. As in, forgive everyone for everything they ever did and hold no grudges because if you do so they will definitely not exploit it and recognize you for the good you did. What wonderful advice to give to our young ladies growing up. It's an unknowing parody of the classic "girl coming of age" story where adversity doesnt need to be fought against through internal change and just needs to be outlasted through believing in your own righteousness while waiting for the world to recognize you're right.

Loved it!

The writing still isn't quite hitting the mark for me, still feels a little juvenile... But again, the story and the characters outweighed the negatives for me. I smashed through this in a few hours, it's been awhile since a book held me in such a grip.

Keen for the third one, can't wait to see what happens next.

Idk why but this series is just SO entertaining and fun to me and i think it deserves more love. Yeah the writing is very straight forward and doesn’t leave anything to the imagination but sometimes I just want a fun fantasy book that’s easy to digest esp when I am feeling myself entering a slump. I’m def excited to read the third!

I just didn't enjoy it as much as I did the first book. I felt that it developed very slow for me and not much really happened until the end of the book and then we get left on a cliff-hanger just as it gets exciting!
It was disappointing compared to how good the first book was for me

4.5 stars really!

I loved the first book in this series, House of Ash and Shadow, and when I saw this was available to ask for the e-galley, I immediately requested and downloaded. This is a series that I really like! This one was another quick and intense ride. *Spoiler if you haven’t read the first one yet!* We had left off with Ariyon stranded in the kind of underworld for this world. He and Fallon’s powers had switched as well. Which worked out for him because he was going to have to fight while he was down there. Fallon experienced his healing powers and it turns out what she experienced made an impression on him at the end when they were able to see each other again. Fallon has to swear her loyalty to the queen in public in order to get the queen to give her a chance. Everyone expects Fallon will have no choice but to go bad as they say everyone in the Bane family did. There are a lot of history lessons in this about her family and the queen’s family. Of course each side has their own version, and it is easy to see how what happened to them could definitely affect how they saw those memories. But it also makes it harder to know who to believe and trust in. When Fallon finds out who actually cursed her it is a big deal. Once again the story ends on a cliffhanger, I won’t give it away. I’m a little worried though because I thought I already had the third book, but it is archived on Netgalley, last month even thought it isn’t supposed to come out till June, and then it is a request only on Edelweiss. So I hope I can get it!

A Gift for the Cursed

Fallon Bane was cursed before birth to have excruciating pain at the touch of another person until Aryion Madden of the House of Madden came and saved her father from death. He tried to hate Fallon because it was Fallon’s mother Marissa who killed his parents, but there was too much light and goodness in her. Aryion was an heir to the throne even though his life would be short as a Maven healer. He was resigned to his duty until he met Fallon and his heart was lost.

Fallon had been going to the academy trying everything to learn how to control a magic she had be unaware she possessed for most of her life. When she saved the Queen, the monarch was forced to return Fallon to the Bane family’s royal manor and find a way to deal with a girl with incredible power who might one day go dark like her mother. Marissa is still trying to return to rule even though she was sent to the realm of the dead and hasn’t given up on a way to take back the throne. She brings her nightling kin regularly to attack the people of the Gilded City.

In the last book, when trying to save Aryion’s life after Marissa killed him with a hatchet to the heart, she trade powers with him which gave him time in the realm of the dead for Fallon to figure out a way to bring him back.

This was actually a really good book with a well built world and characters that you understand because they were given such perfect back stories and life and breath within the story. Leia Stone did a wonderful job of leaving this on a cliff hanger and I will have to go to the next book and find out what happens next. Five stars.

This sequel is one of the worst I've ever read. I didn't feel like continuing, because I didn't see the point. I couldn't connect with the characters. The plot was nonexistent and the world-building minimal.

This book has it all– action, romance, betrayal.
Well, actually non stop action and I didn't catch myself getting bored for a single scene.
But it just didn't feel like a five star.
Way better than the original!!

Assolutamente no.

Cosa succederà a Fallon?
Leia Stone, come sempre, riesce a creare storie e personaggi magnetici, forti e ben caratterizzati.

Book 2 in the Gilded City Series

Do you know that feeling when you love book one and then you pick up book two of a series only to be disappointed? Well that's not going to happen to you with the House of War and Bone.

I was engrossed in Fallons story as she finds her way back to Aryion with the help of friends Eden and Ayden and her familiar Yanric. Again the writing in HOWAB is great, the characters all get enough detail and back story to allow you to feel connected and invested.

In HOAAS Fallon traded powers with Aryion in order to keep him alive in the realm of the dead while Fallon worked out how to get him back. What a price Fallon ends up paying in HOWAB in order to free her love.

It's a slow build towards an ending that had me gripped and left me on an absolute cliffhanger 🤯 I need Book Three now!

Note ~ something I've never had before. There seems to be a misprint and I wonder if it was just my copy. Page 264 ends mid sentence and page 265 is a complete different part of the story and then the unfinished sentence is picked up again on page 266 🤔 anyone else have this in their copy?

“House of War and Bone is book 2 in Leia Stone’s Gilded City series.

Where do I begin, so many shocking revelations revealed, twists, twists and oh yeah more twists. This addition to the series is a little more darker then the previous as we explore more about the history of the Dark Fae. So buckle up for an rollercoaster ride filled with twist (I may have mentioned this already lol), action packed adventure, memories and sacrifices.

I am utterly speechless and I honestly have no idea what to write here in this review that can portray just how much I am loving this series. As per usual the awesomeness that is Leia Stone, she is going to put our characters through the wringer, and us as the readers with her wickedly evil genius cliffhangers lol.

If you haven’t started this series I HIGHLY, no I DEMAND that you go right now and get started. You will not be disappointed. You are going to love meeting Fallon, Ariyon and Yanric. (Just to mention a few)

A spellbinding read!!

House of War and Bone by Leia Stone left me utterly speechless. Returning to the enchanting world of the Gilded City was amazing, and I was hooked right from the start. The dilemma faced by Fallon and Ariyon kept me on the edge of my seat, eagerly anticipating the next twist in their journey. Yanric, as always, proved to be an exceptional sidekick, never failing to captivate as my favorite character. This novel is a captivating and thrilling addition to the series. So many shocking revelations were revealed in this installment. I cannot wait to see what happens next!!

House of War and Bone (Gilded City Series Book 2 of 3) by Leia Stone

Wow! This book was crazy. A fantasy novel chronicling the adventures of Fallon Bane, this second book in the series did not disappoint.

While the first third to half of this book was little slow going, the last third was an absolute ride. So much so I went to bed to read at 1015 with the intention of 30 mins and could not put the book down until it was done.

Additionally, the cliffhanger it left me on basically nuked my upcoming booklist and I need to start the last book in the trilogy.

4.6/5 (a GoodReads 5)

4.5 Stars! Once again I loved this YA book. It was light, refreshing and the fae magic, as well as the political houses are really interesting. It was a pretty quick read but so much fun. I really like Fallon who is the MFC and Aryion is hot enough to make me swoon a wee bit. My fav though is definitely Yanric (Fallon’s familiar). I love his badass sas and quick wit. I can’t wait for the third and final book that should be out in June.

The amount of action in this book is unreal! I can’t even describe how this book makes me feel. One second I was happy and then the next I felt like my heart was being ripped out of my chest! I was clueless to who Fallons dad was in the first book, but half way through this one I figured it out. I was still kinda surprised though when she found out! Love this book and can’t wait to read the next one.

I know this is a YA fantasy, but the writing still felt too…juvenile? In a way that the first book didn’t. I cringed far too often while reading this. The dialogue didn’t just didn’t make sense in the fantasy world this author created. This is probably more of a 2.5 star read. But it kept me entertained enough, so I’ll read the next book.
