A former actor, theatre-director and drama teacher, Deary says he began writing when he was 29. Most famously, he is one of the authors of the Horrible Histories series of books popular among children for their disgusting details, gory information and humorous pictures and among adults for getting children interested in history. Books in the series have been widely translated into other languages and imitated.

A cartoon series has been made of the series of books and was shown on CiTV for a period in 2002.

The first series of a live-action comedy sketch show of the same name was shown on CBBC in 2009 and a second series is due.

Terry is also known widely throughout children and adult reading groups alike for his True Stories series (see below for series list).

He received an Honorary Doctorate of Education from the University of Sunderland in 2000. His numerous accolades also include the Blue Peter "Best Nonfiction Author of the Century" Award in the U.K.

Like with every Horrible Histories book, this was fantastic. It was filled with fascinating information about 50 or so historical events that were, well, just plain awful. As a history nut, I am so in love with this series, and this was an amazing instalment.

Wouldn't it be great if this was longer? Yes, it's a compendium, and a lot of it familiar if you've read the USA book, but it's such a great format to frame it around key days in history, and it's so beautifully presented too. If you're even a casual history fan, this is a real treat and I especially recommend reading it with / to a child (perhaps edit a couple of bits out if they're very young, especially the last few Nazi Germany sections)

Deadly Days in History By Terry Deary is a Historical book about past horrific acts and human sacrifices. From this book a reader can comprehend the cruelness of the each era dating back from 34,000 years ago. It has numerous examples of cannibalism, massacres torture of peasants, and killing of innocent animals. The earliest example is of a massacre in Ancient Talheim “present day Germany”. A grave was discovered filled with massacred children. The Ancient Talheim people beheaded others as a sacrifice to the God's. The reader also learns about the cruelty and torture of peasant by some of the Pharaohs in Ancient Egypt. The Battle of Thermopylae is another example of leaders who sent their armies to fight even though they couldn't win. Thus, this is a book about pure cruelty in humans past.
The most fascinating example of greediness and selfishness in Deadly Days in History is the Cruel Pharaoh Khufu and his fifteen poor bought daughters. Khufu but fifteen female slaves and called them his daughters. One of his most Famous remarks is his pyramid. The largest pyramid made in ancient Egypt. However his so called daughters had to earn their pyramid. To be more specific, They had to cuddle with men in order to get one brick out of a hole pyramid worth of bricks. Khufu also performed other selfish acts like closing temples so people would only give him presents. The story of Khufu is one of twenty horrid stories. Such as The Great Fire of Rome, The First Viking Raid, and the most recent one Auschwitz, Poland dated on 1941.
Thus, Deadly Days in History is horrifying trip to past terrors that is recommended to horror book lovers and students that are fascinated in history. However it is not recommended to all students because it is graphic and acquires mature Middle school students.

This is a large format book, with full colour illustrations. The text covers some notable events in history, around the world. There is lots of gore and violence mentioned, so the book is best suited to older children.
I like Deary's writing style - succinct, informative, entertaining. There is also a tinge of wry humour in there, despite some of the grim content.
