Rate this book
15 summers ago, everything changed…

Ava Howell seemed to have it all. She moved away from Emerald Creek, Idaho, married the love of her life and published a bestselling memoir. But she never expected that her husband would feel so betrayed by a secret from her past—the truth of what happened to her and her sister all those years ago—that he’d walk away. Now Ava is back home and trying to move on with the only person who can truly understand…

Following years of healing, Madison Howell is finally happy. After college she built a no-kill shelter where she works with animals every day, and she’s in love with the town veterinarian, Dr. Luke Gentry. But she can’t ever bring herself to tell him. Years ago, his dad died protecting Madi and her sister, so how could he ever love her back?

With the truth laid bare, and the past that Ava and Madison have worked so hard to leave behind threatening everything they have built for themselves, the Howell sisters’ reunion is bittersweet. And as Ava and Madi attempt to remedy the rifts in their lives and reconcile their futures, they must face the demons of their past together.

I'm not one of those people who knew from birth she was destined to become a writer. I always loved to read and throughout my childhood I could usually be found with a book in my hands. To the disgust of my friends, I even enjoyed creative writing assignments that made them all groan. But I had other dreams besides writing. I wanted to be an actress or a teacher or a lawyer.

Life took a different turn for me, though, when my mother made me take a journalism elective in high school (thanks, Mom!). I knew the first day that this was where I belonged.

After I graduated from college in journalism, I took a job at the local daily newspaper and I reveled in the challenge and the diversity of it. One day I could be interviewing the latest country music star, the next day I was writing about local motorcycle gangs or interviewing an award-winning scientist.

Through it all -- through the natural progression of my career from reporter to editor -- I wrote stories in my head. Not just any stories, either, but romances, the kind of books I have devoured since junior high school, with tales about real people going through the trials and tribulations of life until they find deep and lasting love.

I had no idea how to put these people on paper, but knew I had to try -- their stories were too compelling for me to ignore. I sold my first book in 1995 and now, more than 30 books later, I've come to love everything about writing, from the click of the computer keys under my fingers to the "that's-it!" feeling I get when a story is flowing.

I write full-time now (well, as full-time as I can manage juggling my kids!) amid the raw beauty of the northern Utah mountains.

Even though I might not have dreamed of being a writer when I was younger, now I simply can't imagine my life any other way.

I love to hear from readers. You can reach me at my email address, [email protected]

Adding this to my feed because it’s summer-beach-read-season, and this book deserves some more love. For those looking for a beach rom-com with substance, this is it!

The cover of this book is a bit deceptive. This book isn’t a quirky summer romance or even a predictable read. There isn’t a scene in the book on which the cover is based. However, this book, while perhaps a bit repetitive in some areas, explores a relationship between two sisters, and a trauma that has impacted two families is retold and processed maybe for the first time. I found this book endearing; I loved that one of the sisters helped rescue homeless animals. I recommend this book to those who are looking for a more complex summer or romance read.

2 sisters that endured extreme trauma growing up navigate their lives 15 years later after one sister publishes a book about that trauma.

Based on the cover, you would think this is a beachy read, but I did not get that vibe at all. It is a lot of drama and overcoming trauma. I had trouble feeling the chemistry between both main couples. And it was a very slow burn.

The BEST part about this book is that one of the sisters runs an animal rescue and there is lots of talk about the animals and puppies. I could have read those parts all day. It was more the love story that didn’t connect for me.

I also enjoyed the passages before each chapter that were from the book about their childhood trauma.

Overall, I would say this is good but lacks a “wow” factor.

RaeAnne Thayne always writes the best feel good stories with heart about life, relationships and romance. But don’t let this cover fool you as this has quite a bit of substance to it. One of the main characters, Madison (Madi), has disabilities and is portrayed as a strong young woman, loved that, who has a career running a no-kill shelter. She secretly has feelings for the local veterinarian but is afraid to act on it due to a telling secret she’s kept from him. Then there’s her sister Ava who has just published a best selling memoir detailing a trauma both sister’s experienced in their childhood. (That trauma is slowly revealed at the beginning of each chapter through incerps of Ava’s book) Madi is not happy about it, nor that everyone in her community is fixated on the book, its gory details. The books wild success has also strained Ava’s marriage. Seeking solace, Ava returns home after running away several years before. But can she repair her relationship with Madi and save her marriage?

This is a sensitive, emotional story about childhood trauma, healing and moving forward, sisterly bonds, community and darling little animals at the shelter. This has a bit of mystery, and there is romance but it takes a backseat in the story. A quiet novel that’s both heartwarming and heartbreaking, you can’t help but feel a strong connection towards these characters. I made a great choice picking this one up. Perfect for readers wanting to add more substance with a heavier topic to their summer reading. 4.5 stars — Pub. 6/18/24

Ava and Madison survived and escaped a cult/prepper group when they were teenagers. Both have moved on, but Ava’s book detailing the experience brings unwelcome attention and Madison is furious. Why would Ava write this book? Ava’s not comfortable with sharing the past either, so I wasn’t sure why she wrote the book, but all is revealed as the story goes on.

Madison sustained lasting physical damage but has worked hard to overcome her trauma. I loved that her main focus in life was helping animals by running a rescue shelter. Ava’s book has become a national best seller, but she’s put her book tour off because her marriage is in trouble. She needs time back home to lick her wounds and figure out what to do next.

The sisters really had a traumatic experience, and it was lucky they had each other to help them get through it and survive the escape! My heart went out to them, and I was enraged over how they came to be in the situation in the first place!

15 Summers Later
was part romance, with Madison finding love and Ava sorting out her marriage-in-crisis, and part women’s fiction with the sisters reconciling the past and mending their relationship. I adored every minute!

A copy was kindly provided by Canary Street Press. My thoughts and opinions are my own.

This book… I have no words. What a beautiful story about sisterhood, a serious struggle to fight for their lives, and beautiful romances. Just loved it. I just cried for a whole minute once I finished it. I want to read more of her books now she is so underrated!! Loved this so much. This is not just a light summer romance, it goes way deeper then that. This was so unexpected in the best way possible.

Fifteen summers ago, a devastating secret tore apart Ava and Madison Howell’s lives. After writing a best selling memoir about her childhood, Ava returns home to confront the past that ended her marriage, while Madison struggles to confess a hidden truth that could jeopardize her newfound happiness with the town's veterinarian.

This book is a bit heavier than your typical beach read but it is so worth it! This was my first book by this author and it won't be my last. This book has a little bit of everything...family drama, hope, romance (specifically one of my favorite tropes...friends to lovers). The relationships between all the characters felt so real and I felt so connected to them.

I thought this was going to be a fun and romantic beach read, because it's RaeAnne Thayne and the cover (which is a propos of nothing, because it has absolutely nothing to do with the story) screams summer.

Instead, this was a book that focuses mainly on overcoming severe trauma and grief, and how people have different ways of getting on with their lives and coping with it.

I wasn't expecting it to be so heavy, so I had a somewhat jarring reading experience. There's also very little romance, in spite of both sisters both having their own romance angle. I didn't care all that much for either, because one wasn't explored enough and the other was too much of a slow burn (and I love slow burn so it takes me a lot to complain about that).

The 3 stars is entirely because Madi, one of the sisters, runs an animal shelter and that stuff is my catnip.

It was just ok for me! Super heavy topics! I think RaeAnne could use a bit more tweaking with her dialogue. She’s writing younger characters and the conversations and cringe.

This was much deeper than your average light, feel-good summer read. 15 Summers Later was a moving & emotional story which revolved not only around romance & friendships, but the relationship between 2 sisters and all they endured and overcame individually and together during childhood and adulthood.

Their stories flowed and came together perfectly, while we got to see from 3 different perspectives- Madi’s, Ava’s & Luke’s. And don’t even get me started on Luke!! Literally a dream guy. The chemistry between him & Madi was tangible from the very beginning. It was very much a slow burn romance but heartwarming all the same.

There were so many different themes in this book but it didn’t come across as overwhelming. From romance, to loss, familial relationships, second chances, trauma & healing. I reallly enjoyed this one and encourage everyone to keep an eye out for it on June 18th!!

I sadly had to DNF this one at 43%. I really wanted it to work out, but I struggled with there being a lot of unnecessary repetitiveness and I found it to be slow. The writing just didn't feel natural to me. I hope it works for others.

A fabulous story of resilience, forgiveness, and the unbreakable bond of sisters. So much more than a sweet romance. It dealt with some difficult situations, but throughout the story, hope was highlighted. RaeAnne Thayne is becoming a new favorite author.

Another heart-warming story from RaeAnne Thayne. I enjoyed the dynamic between the sisters and the issues they needed to overcome with each other after the events of their childhood. The romantic aspects of the book took a back seat, but their relationships with Cullen and Luke felt realistic.

This author rarely disappoints if you're looking for a good story that will stir your emotions.

Thank you NetGalley and Harlequin Trade Publishing for this ARC of Such 15 Years Later by RaeAnne Thayne.

Madi and Ava survived a dangerous coalition camp escape as young teens. Madi spent her entire life trying to move on despite her physical scars and limitations. Ava used that part of her life in a thesis that was published and Ghost Lake became a national best seller.

Madi has stayed in Emerald Cove building her dream of working with animals and opening a no kill shelter. She has worked beside Dr. Gentry and is unknowingly falling for him. Ave moved away and started a life with husband she couldn’t image living without.

Will Ghost Lake and Ava’s memories bring her back to a low point in her life? Madi isn’t talking to her because of the novel. Ave kept that part of her life from her husband who, after reading the book needs space.

Can Madi and Ava find common ground, is Ava’s marriage over, and is Madi capable of finding and accepting love? As usual Thayne has written an amazing novel that was hard to put down. The story line flowed well and the themes were relevant.

✨ sisterly bonding
✨ friends to lovers
✨ small town
✨ past trauma

A bit of a heavier read that’s follows two sisters who are working to mend their relationship following trauma that will bond them forever.

I liked the is book but didn’t love it. I wish we learned more about their experience at Ghost Lake to help us connect better to the characters. I also felt there was a great opportunity to intertwine the two sisters and their very different love stories, but honestly both stories fell a bit flat for me. I really wanted to love this one, I just found it lacking a lot of depth.

** I highly recommend reading any trigger warnings before diving into this book. The number one being on-page miscarriage.

This is the story of two sisters who have a very difficult childhood, seeing how this affects them in their adult lives. Eva writes a memoir including what happened to them, her husband feels betrayed and walks away. Not knowing what else to do, Eva goes to her sister Madison, the one person who will understand. Madison has moved on and made her life what she wanted it to be, opening a no kill shelter for animals. She finds herself falling in love with the local veterinarian, she can’t find it in herself to tell him. His father died protecting Madison and Eva, so how could he ever feel the same way about her?

With everything they’ve built for themselves on the line, the two sisters come together. Facing their pasts to hopefully help remedy their futures, this is a story of sorrow and triumph, coming out on the other side with the help of others.

RaeAnne Thayne is one of those authors that is like a palette cleanser for me. When I’m in need of something lighter (in between all the emotional and angtsy reads that are my mainstay), Thayne’s books provide a nice respite before I dive back into the heavier stuff. 15 Summers Later was a solid story of the bonds of sisters and reconciling the past. It was also a story within a story, containing excerpts from Ava’s newly published book, which detailed she and Madison’s harrowing past. As their past journey was doled out in small snippets, I was equal parts gripped by the story and surprised at its intensity. Seeing Ava and Madison find their way back to one another, while Ava strengthened her marriage and Madison fostered a new romance, made for a truly enjoyable experience.

This book was a break from the pretty lighthearted romance reads I’ve enjoyed all summer. 15 summers ago, two teenage sisters were forced into a survivalist cult in the mountains of Idaho by their dad and when the younger of the two pushes them to finally enact their escape plan, they must flee from armed men and attack dogs through 20 miles of wilderness. They succeeded, but are only managing to face and move beyond their grief and trauma 15 summers later.

Ava’s memoir about their shared trauma, “Ghost Lake,” becomes an instant bestseller everyone can’t stop talking about. It drives a wedge between her and the husband she never shared the true darkness of her past with AND the sister she is trauma-bonded to forever. Madison is resentful and frustrated that their dark past and the terrifying situation they narrowly escaped from is not only being brought back to the forefront of her life, but shared with the world, too.

I liked the switch between POVs from the older sister, Ava (an English teacher-turned author navigating a rough patch in her marriage as a result of her published book), and the younger sister, Madison (a vet-tech turned no-kill animal shelter owner who is fighting feelings for the man who saved her all those years ago). While the romances fell a bit flat, the way the trauma affected each sister was well-developed. Madison’s scars are more visible - a gunshot wound to the head that that required intensive physical and occupational therapy - and instilled an intense desire to prove her independence and strength. Ava’s scars are more hidden and gradually revealed as she carries the weight of not having protected Ava in the past and not knowing how to be on equal ground with a sister she feels so responsible for protecting even now.

Negatives: I found the excerpts from the memoir at the start of each chapter to be gripping, if a little repetitive, as they reveal details of the sisters’ escape. I can’t help but wonder if I would have rather read “Ghost Lake” and have the background on the sisters be the afterword/epilogue. Madi’s simultaneous refusal to read the book and insistence that it never needed to be written is a roundabout miscommunication trope I would’ve liked to see resolved much earlier.
Also, the cover is entirely misleading - It bothers me that it depicts something that never happened in the book.

Rating as a movie: R for adult content

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️🐕📚

My thoughts: 📱 17% 1:35:28 Chapter Chapter Seven - Trying to figure out if this connected to another book or if that trope is just that common. It's too late/early for this.
📱56% 5:05:31 Chapter 19 - This took a minute for me to get into, but I'm there, not loving it but enjoying it a lot more.
📱90% 8:15:47 Chapter 32 - 😥 I need a moment and my husband just woke up from his nap, this isn't going in Featuring but is sad and triggering for some.

I finished, it was okay. I didn't like the epigraphs they were kinda dull. The drama was light, Madison let go too quickly for my taste, Ava didn't seem sorry, she was mostly focused on herself the ending was rushed.

Recommend to others: Maybe, not my favorite.

This book was not at all what I thought it would be about! I was looking for a good summer read about a romance. However misguided, I did enjoy the book! It was about two sisters Ava and Madison who were at odds with each other over a book Ava wrote about their horrible experience in the woods due to the father. Ava and Madison were dealing with the horrible experiences in their own ways and they became distant because of it. Amongst all this they both were going through other things in their lives. Toward the end something devastating happened to Ava and it brought the two sisters together again. This time it brought them closer than ever! There was a little romance story going on with Madison and a guy named Luke which was very sweet and made the ending extra special!
