The Hebridean Shield #1

The Radiance of the Moon

Rate this book
The year is 1383, and the Wolf of Badenoch has conducted a terroristic campaign across the highlands to increase his wealth and land holdings. Now he's turned his sights from Scotland to the Kingdom of the Isles. Seeking to keep the Wolf’s superior fighting forces out of his island nation, the King of the Isles turns to Chieftain Hector MacLean for help. A survivor of the Hundred Years’ War, Hector’s reputation precedes him. Brutal, clever, perhaps the greatest warrior Scotland or the Isles has ever produced—as if the man has a gift for killing. But after changing his life, Hector has no interest in returning to his old ways. As an alternative to war, he agrees to forge a marriage alliance with one of the Wolf’s allies, hoping to gain their fidelity and protect his family and clan. After surviving a brutal first marriage, young Irish widow Cara O’Ballevan arrives in Lochbuie Clan Territory, her sole prayer to make a peaceful home with the MacLeans, but the clan is wary of her as an outsider. After praying for help, she happens upon a kind man beneath a bright moon, unaware that he is the chieftain and soon to be betrothed to another. Over a series of meetings, Hector and Cara help one another, encourage one another, and begin to come to terms with a past they’re both trying to leave behind. When Cara faces a threat during a clan dispute, Hector discovers that the deadly combatant he used to be isn’t gone, but lurking just beneath the surface. This time, the lethal warrior within him takes up watch over Cara. As her gentle spirit roots deep into his heart, Hector knows she can never become his wife. A future with her could only lead to war and disgrace. Yet he cannot stop himself from falling in love with the one God entrusted to him – the woman he isn't supposed to marry.

The Radiance of the Moon - Ashley Worrell - 4 Stars

BLOG REVIEW POST HERE

Had the best time reading this! Releases on February 27, 2024.

- Clean, Christian Medieval Romance
- Scottish Protective Hero & Irish Widow Finding Love
- Scottish dialogue, history, political intrigue and clans
- Ruth and Boaz Inspired (Not a Retelling but some elements inspired a unique story)
- Great faith content, forgiveness and redemption
- Author's debut novel
- Looking forward to the next book!

This book is set in 1383 and if you love a good Medieval Scottish romance, pick this up! I became interested in this story when one of my friends recommended it to me and it did not disappoint. It felt like such an original story to me and as someone who LOVES Scottish stories, I was here for it! The faith content in this was so beautiful, it blew me away. We see Chieftain Hector and Irish widow Cara. They each have been through so much. Hector struggled with drinking and a past reputation less than to be desired and Cara went through spousal abuse for 10 years. When her husband passes away, it seems she has a new start is among her as she follows her mother-in-law to a new area. She had some traits reminiscent of Ruth and I loved that. Hector is betrothed to someone he doesn't want to marry for political reasons but when he meets Cara, they fall in love and he has to decide what to do. I enjoyed seeing them get to know one another throughout the process and their romance was sweet, even if I did want a little more communication between them at times. :)

I loved the faith and hope throughout this story the most and how the Lord was with our characters to help them overcome their trials and tribulations. I also love the faith elements were pulled from some of Ashley's own story as well. Solid debut from Ashley and look forward to the next book in the series.

Thank you to the author for providing a copy to honestly read and review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Content notes: Some scenes of Cara's previous husband being abusive, Hector's alcoholism shown but also shown is his story being redeemed by Jesus, attempted sexual assault, romance is clean and no language.

Some books just make me go “Man, I’m so glad she had the guts to write this!” A historical romance tour de force and make it decadently Medieval, no less.

Redemption and romance- this is definitely worth some subgenre adventuring, because, even if the battle-torn, minimal-bathing Dark Ages are not your usual time period of choice or even if predominant uplifting themes of Christian faith are not something you seek out, the romance beats on this one drum a steady call to HEA chasers everywhere that full swoony satisfaction is on the horizon.

After fellow readers’ raving, my expectations were high, and I came in assuming we’d get a lovely angsty romance amongst tons of political intrigue and clan warfare, and, though it’s definitely there, I’m happy to report the romance is as center stage as it gets here. So, so, so much to love in this class difference story, but, for me, a hero is defining. And, Hector, second son, prodigal brother, Laird MacLean, chieftain of Lochbuie, Beithir of the Battlefield, the ProtHector, Literal and Figurative Wallclimber, Berserker of TBRs, Vanquisher of Book Slumps, etc, is such a new favorite. This is all you need to know: we like our heroes fiercely, savagely protective, but teachable. Sure, I can never get enough brogue, but the amount of grovel, gestures, awkward bumbling, “What I say?” fumbling and full out apologizing from this warrior giant had me dancing an inner-jig (awkward even in my head, but no less celebratory). The Medieval scenario just lets him shine in all his natural leader, work-in-progress hothead, all-in-for-her glory.

And, if I’m so on board with the hero, the heroine better be right there with him. Cara matched him the whole way with her brilliant long-suffering survivor arc. All her impressive competence, endless kindness and steady faith more than deserving for Hec’s insta-devotion, which not only falls first, but falls as hard as a week-old bannock.

I really have no inexpert opinion notes to give because of how with the characterization, the progression, the falling-in-love giddyness, the epic whisking away, the individual depth and redemption, the mutual rescuing, absolutely everything was given. Have to mention the confidently understated writing, the history-nerd-senses-tingling glossary, traveling the magical Scottish Hebrides, a third act tailor-made for Laura Frantz fans, and how it’s beyond exciting to love a book/world so much and know she’s got 8 more in her bag of swoony story wonders coming.

Content notes: Kissing Only, married very vague fade to black. Hero struggles with alcoholism and war PTSD. Mention of past womanizing. Mention of past child abuse. Heroine widowed survivor of domestic abuse (on page flashbacks) and infidelity. Predominant mention of infertility. Heroine suffers on page violent attack and on page attempted sexual assault. On page sword violence. None of the above are graphic.

ETA: I just listened through the audiobook as well. Perfection. Male narrator with a great accent and the grit of the voice needed for Hector. So good.
*****

Utterly Magnificent.
I hadn't planned to read this today, but I'm so glad I picked it up. I started after dinner and finished at 1:40 am.

The story is enchanting. The writing itself is beautiful.
Wounded, protective hero. Threads of Ruth and Naomi.
Deep longing. Hearts that ache for one another. A Divine command to "Protect her."

Hector and Cara are layered characters each with history of abuse (in different forms). Each have come to know the God of the universe and to put their trust in Him - but that does not make things easy. There are deep lessons to learn.
There is fast fall and slow burn here. Smoldering feeling.
Brashness that must be tempered. Trust that must be learned.
Mature and gorgeous writing.
As a reader, my faith was challenged and encouraged.
This is not a sickly sweet read. It is engaging, heart-racing, and at the same time, feels like home in the midst of the storm.
I could not possibly recommend it enough

I’m gonna just swoon away.
This will be an author I will auto buy. Just phenomenal.

On the practical side, the dates are listed at each chapter and in the table of contents. There is also a dictionary at the back for terms.

So. Well. Done.
Fans of Carrie Cotten, Tamara Leigh, Kathleen Morgan, Michelle Griep, and Jody Hedlund will likely love this.

A million stars, and grabbing my friends' hands so we can put a million thumbs up.

WOW! “The Radiance of the Moon” by Ashley Worrell is one of my favorite reads this year! I’ve never read a Christian work of fiction like this book!

This is a tale set in Hebrides, Scotland 1383. It follows the main protagonists Chieftain Hector MacLean and Irish widow Cara O’Ballevan. This tale of love set in the midst of recovery, vindication, and redemption transported me to another place and time! This tale kept me turning the pages! The faith content in this book was amazing!

If you like warriors, castles, love stories, and you want to read something fresh in Christian fiction then this is the book for you! The ending was amazing!

Make no mistake about this book it is not light and fluffy—much like life this book can be gritty! What is this book about then? Well, it’s so many things…it’s about courage, strength, standing up for what you believe in, hopes and dreams, facing the consequences of your choices, great sorrows and abundant joy, love for the Lord, self worth, overcoming past hurt and past mistakes, struggles, forgiveness of others and of self, and finding God in the midst of all of that! And of course love for your soul mate! On some level I can personally identify with both Cara and Hector which makes this even more gripping and meaningful.

I probably don’t need to say it but this is a clear favorite! This one gets all the stars! I will definitely read more by this author. This is an amazing start to a series! Looking forward to the second book! ❤️‍🔥 Book crush!

Thank you to the author for the free audiobook.

BLOWN AWAY.

Audiobook notes: This is the only negative thing I have to say. The audio wasn’t great. I ended up reading more of the book on my kindle because of the narration. When the narrator would read the general story line, it was fine. But anytime voices were used it was hard to understand and didn’t fit the characters well either. For someone who can listen to very dense fantasies at 3x with no problems, I had to slow this one wayyyy down to understand what was being said.

BUT NOW ALL OF THE HAPPY THINGS BECAUSE I LOVED THIS BOOK.

This was a lot more heavily Christian fiction than I generally go for, so while this is one I’m usually not drawn too, I thought it everything was beautifully crafted. I think with the setting and time period the faith aspects were woven in well and showcased beautiful moments of connection and love.

I adored the hard fought relationship between Hector and Cara. It often felt like one step forward, two steps back, but then those moments of clarity and understanding would come and I loved how the communication lines began to open. I was a smitten puddle over many moments. I loved the conflict and just the right level of action. The heat and passion of true love and the strength of friendships.

A fabulous book. I am blown away this was a debut and I hope we get more books from this author soon!

Overall audience notes:
- Christian Historical Fiction Romance
- Language: none
- Romance: closed door
- Violence: moderate
- Trigger/Content Warnings: spousal abuse (physical), loss of loved one, childbirth, mentions of child abuse, attempted assault, being stoned

"I want to understand everything about you. I want to be encompassed by your thoughts. I want to learn who you are. And I want you to learn me."
"Everything?"
"Aye."
"That could take a long time."
"I've been waiting a verra long time. I'm no' the man I used to be. I never tho' God would give me a wife. I want to honor the treasure he's given to me."

Radiance of the Moon by Ashley Worrell

My review honestly won't do this book justice, so here goes nothing.

Wow! This book is incredible! Do you love books by Nichole Van and A. L. Sowards? Then I have a book recommendation for you! The Radiance of the Moon by Ashley Worrell has all the Scottish vibes, angsty backstories, redemption, and reminded me very much of NV's and Sowards's books.
The story, the characters, the angst, the setting! I was completely immersed in the story and had a hard time putting this book down. The narrator for this book did a phenomenal job! I don't usually like male narrators, but Guy Barnes did such a great job and helped with the immersed feel of the story.

Hector. Tall, strong, gruff. But also loving, protective, and fierce. I loved his redemption arc. It was truly beautiful and deeply felt. One of my favorite parts was his fierce loyalty to his family and clan, and also his determined love and caring for Cara. I loved their meet cute!

Cara. She is beautiful, strong, graceful, talented, intelligent, and witty. She comes from a difficult past and struggles with her feelings. My heart broke for her in her pain and anguish but healed when Hector reassured her and loved her despite it all. I enjoyed watching her grow throughout the book, and I even teared up at some point.

I also enjoyed the Christian messages, which were good for my soul.  The suspense and the political intrigue kept me on the edge of my seat, and I could hardly read fast enough. I am excited to start book 2.
I definitely recommend this one to anyone who loves Historical Romance, especially the medieval era and/or with a Scotland setting.

Favorite Parts:
Meet cute
He helps her
He protects her
She prays for him
Irish/Scottish characters
Soft, graceful intelligent FMC
Strong gruff MMC
Redemption
Spiritual and Emotional Healing
He prays for her
Forbidden/secret romance
Competition
Beautiful angsty romance
He teaches her self-defense
Loyalty and betrayal
Suspenseful end
Audiobook narrator
The whole book!

"Dinnae rob me of my blessing. You are my gift. Wherever God leads us, or whatever He calls us to, His provision is already there. It might be just enough, not an abundance. But it is all that we need."

Reasons to read:
- Medieval Scottish Romance
- Strong Faith elements (Ruth/Boaz inspired)
- Political intrigue / Clans of the Isles
- original plot (with twists!)
- Sweet romance
- Themes of redemption and forgiveness
- Series Starter

𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 :
Romance: Closed-door
Trigger warning: PTSD, abuse, alcoholism, death, light violence, attempted SA

My Thoughts:
A good Medieval romance is hard to come by, a Scottish medieval romance even more so. I was intrigued when I heard of a new author writing in this genre, and excited to read. By the time I finished, I knew that this was an author to watch, and a new series to follow. Refreshing and unique, Ashley Worrell’s debut novel, The Radiance of the Moon, is an exciting and faith-filled read set in the Isles of Scotland.

I loved the main characters, Chieftain Hector and the Irish widow Cara. Both characters had their share of demons to fight. Hector struggled with a hard past and tried to forge a life for himself and his people despite his reputation. I admired his strength in trying to overcome these difficulties and learn from his mistakes. His character growth was steady throughout the story, and truly embraced each interaction with Cara. Cara on the other hand, also had a great character arc. She was a victim of abuse during her marriage and it left its mark on her in more ways than one. I loved watching her find her strength and confidence again and enjoyed her slowly win over those around her. Cara reminded me of the biblical Ruth, following her mother-in-law to a new land and working hard for a new future.

The relationship between Hector and Cara was sweet and developed at a good pace. I liked watching them grow more comfortable around each other, to the point of having an easy banter between them. Their relationship grew stronger as they dealt with the scars of their pasts together. They had good chemistry, and I could not see them paired off with anyone else.

The plot shifted often, allowing for quieter moments and surprising turns. While there were elements of Ruth/Boaz’s story, the plot itself was original, filled with political intrigue, world-building, and a lush cast of characters. Sometimes it was difficult to keep track of the plot points and characters, but I understand the need to have a good foundation for a series. I will also say, that faith is a strong element in this book, to the point I would label this book as an inspirational or Christian medieval romance. However, it is also a story packed with moments of humor, romance, and action. I'm excited about the potential of more stories. I cannot wait for the next book!

*I received a complimentary copy of this book. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

What an absolutely beautiful book!

The faith was strong and solid throughout the entire story. Cara and Hector both had strong faith but it was definitely tested many times throughout the trials they faced.

Both characters were flawed and likable and from their first meeting you can’t help but root for their happily ever after.

I loved the inspiration from Ruth and Boaz and how Margaret was such a strong character in the story as Cara’s support.

Medieval Scotland isn’t a destination I typically travel while on my fictional vacations but this book definitely piqued my interest and I can NOT wait to read what else Ashley Worrell has in store for this place!

I'm not sure how to put into words how much I loved this book. I knew I wanted to read it as soon as I found out it was a Christian book set in Medieval Scotland and it didn't disappoint!

The faith is rich and woven throughout each page. The grief, the pain, and the redemption are so real and done so well (I may have cried a few times). I loved the side characters and the plot. And I adored Hector and Cara so much. They each had their strengths and weaknesses that made them so realistic. Neither was perfect. I loved how they constantly brought one another back to the foot of the cross. Ms. Worrell just became a new favorite author and I am so excited for the rest of this series.

Ashley, what in the world did you do to me?

I was already at a point in my life, struggling with my mental health, battling with God, and struggling with my religion and beliefs. This book made me cry, made my open my eyes, and, for the first time in 5+ years, step foot into church on a Sunday morning.

Plot: This book is going to destroy you in the best way. The characters constant battle with their beliefs, forgiveness, battling what the world is telling them versus what their God is telling them is so real, and raw, and you feel so deeply for all of them throughout all of the struggles that they are going through.

Characters: I love them all, and that is all I have to say. Each characters (main or side) is so effectively created that it almost feels like a movie is playing in your mind. You're there with them (in the good and the bad), and you feel their pain, their happiness, and so much more.

Overall: I loved this book. It broke me, healed me, and helped me to realize what I was missing in my life. This is supposed to be a 9 book series, and I can assure you, I will be reading all 9 books.

This beautiful and tragic yet triumphant story brought about a whirlwind of emotions in me, and a healing I didn’t realize I needed until I read this book.

Cara’s mother in law, Margaret, decides to return home to the Scottish Isles after the unexpected death of her son, and Cara devotedly returns with her.

Upon their arrival, Cara meets a troubled yet kind man, and shares many vulnerable and tragic moments with him, all the while not realizing that he is Hector, the chieftain of Margaret’s clan, the MacLeans. Cara and Hector seek God’s wisdom in answering the call they feel to be together, as the Scottish Isles are in the midst of planning a counterattack against the deadly forces of the Wolf of Badenoch.

I personally and deeply felt both Cara’s and Hector’s suffering from the memories of the past that haunt them both. The aspects of faith and allowing God to pour into their hearts, especially in the times of sorrow, pain, and trouble, was so uplifting and refreshing to see.

My heart will be forever changed after reading this story. And I highly recommend this story to anyone who wants a faith-filled, yet real, poignant tale of God’s love, the power of forgiveness for oneself and others, and overcoming tragedy. I hope this story speaks to you as much as it did for me!

“The only thing I want is to be near you. I cannae stop this longing in my heart for you, Cara.”

Radiance of the Moon is another book that would have never been on my radar had it not been for amazing bookstagrammers doing their thing. When I saw posts start floating around for its release, I was immediately intrigued. And I was blown away by the depth and beauty that Ashley gave us on every single page.

Radiance of the Moon is a story of hope and healing, faith and forgiveness, and of finding one’s way and worth after a season sorrow and pain.

Hector and Cara are two broken souls, immediately drawn to one another. Both are haunted by their pasts. Both carry emotional and physical scars. Their paths cross and their hearts align, but adversity and prejudices are determined to tear them apart.

Hector is the alpha of all alphas. His fierce protectiveness is pure James Alexander Malcolm Mackenzie Fraser. He would move heaven and earth and destroy any and all in his path to be at Cara’s side.

This historical Christian Scottish romance is an outstanding debut that will have you swooning. There is suspense, mystery, danger, faith, and lots of romantic tension. It is also the first book in the series, so you will lots more fantastic reading to look forward to.

I listen to the audio and read along in KU. The audio is spectacular!

A woman with a traumatic past makes a Ruth-like expedition to a new clan with the mother of her now-deceased (and terrible human) husband. A man with battle-induced nightmares, flashbacks, and coping mechanisms is Laird over this clan. While both try to heal, they both fall into a relationship that was never supposed to be. Clean, Christian romance. Sweet, but still with sword-fighting, political moves, and a whole lot of 14th century Scottish words. Very well done!

I stayed up way too late finishing this awesome new book. A fictional Scottish love story filled with all kinds of drama and amazing characters. How I love redeemed Hector!

Make sure you pick this one up to read ! It literally kept me up way past my bedtime. I only put it down when it became too intense - and I needed a break from the intensity.

Look forward to more books from this new author!

The Radiance of the Moon by Ashley worrell
Book 1 of the Hebridean Shield Series

I first saw the title of the book from a friend and a few other people who also started to post about it. I became intrigued at the idea of a clean Scottish historical romance (my weakness I've discovered!)! And I jumped at the opportunity for an ARC read (my first!)! So thank you @byashleyworrell for the opportunity! ❤️

If you want to read about Scottish tribes, elements of faith, love, betrayl, and the complexities of different relationships (siblings, parents, husband/wife, neighbors, colleagues etc.), then this is a must!

If you want to delve deep into your ACTUAL faith in God, if you want to be spiritually uplifted, and if you want to be reminded of God's hand in EVERYTHING, then I suggest you snatch this book as soon as you can!

The turbulent pasts of Cara and Hector deeply affected their self-esteem and caused them to question their place amongst their people and almost make themselves smaller. It was really beautiful how their growth was realistically portrayed, through the muck of self-hatred through to other side of hope and thriving through healing and growth. I think that made me as a reader relate and therefore connect and love the characters. Sometimes we imagine that we would never find ourselves in a certain situation, but life is unpredictable, and through this realistic lens we can appreciate that this story could very well have happened!

The story starts out moderately paced as we get to know the characters and their history. Then the story progresses through their dilemmas and then, you're taken for quite a ride!!! I couldn't put down the book at that point and stayed up late to finish it! There's many twists, turns and surprises (all the way to the end), so hold on to your bonnets, it's a doozy!

This book was absolutely amazing 😍. I knew when I heard this book was a Christian historical Scottish romance/adventure I had to read it! I was not disappointed!! I just can’t even express how lovely this book was from beginning to end. The story, a retelling of Boaz and Ruth in medieval Scotland, was well written, fleshed out perfectly in amount of details, and especially as it reached the end was riveting and swashbuckling adventure. It was romantic and the romance was sweet and heart filled. I appreciated the author’s care to paint honest characters and honest feelings that I know will resonate with many readers and also that she didn’t write anything explicit but the characters feelings toward each other and desire to be together were also not totally swept under the rug. I loved how she dealt with the main characters trauma in a way that ultimately pointed them to Christ first as the true Savior and help and that they were also able to help each other heal. As someone who loves Scottish stories, dreams of going there, and whose family immigrated from there this novel really just intrigued me. I saw more are to come in this series and I absolutely cannot wait! My only slight struggle was I did listen to the audiobook and the narrator’s thick Scottish accent was a little bit tough to get used to because it was extra thick when voicing Hector and his voicing of female characters was sometimes a little bit much or trying too hard to speak lightly or softly. He did a good job making it authentic overall though. Overall 10/10 recommend. The story was a delight.

Ummmm, listen to my advice when I say, GET THIS BOOK ON AUDIO!!!!

This baby kept me awake at 4 am on a loonnnnggg drive home. The narrator did a fantastic job with the Scottish brogue and made Hector sound so incredibly swoony!

The story itself was lovely and engaging. I love that the author didn't shy away from the tough marriage topics that would naturally rear their head in a situation like this. She leaned into the romance heavily, which was PERFECT for me! 🤌

One of the best historical romances I've read all year!

I really enjoyed this book and the history aspect. It was hard to imagine being in Cara's shoes, since she has had a rough decade with being married to an abusive husband. This book doesn't shy away from difficult subjects but also isn't graphic about those triggers. I thought that the love story was a beautiful testament to how one should treat their sweetheart. The only thing that kind of annoyed me was the hot/cold signals when Hector is supposed to be courting another lady...

This story is loosely based on the story of Ruth and Boaz. Which is a bible story about a widow who moves to Judah with her mother-in-law, Naomi, instead of remaining with her people. And she ends up under the protection of Boaz, a wealthy kinsman of her former husband. Don’t worry I said loosely, remember! I didn’t ruin the story at all for you. I won’t say more though because going into a story blind is one of the best parts.

There were a few sections I found my mind wandering a bit but Ashley did an amazing job at building the world on the Isles. The characters had excellent background stories and character growth (which I am a stickler for). So their stories flowed naturally and were very believable. Hector was a little intense with protection over Cara, which made me frustrated at times, but stick with it and I think you’ll enjoy the resolution.

Strong christian themes.

**Side note, I tried sooo hard not to let this effect how I overall felt about the book (I listened to it) but I absolutely did not jive well with the narrator. His voice was so nice until he did all the different character voices. It would have been ten times better if he had just straight read it. His voice was so relaxing but he even changed his voice for the MMC ... And it just made it not fun to listen to.

I am shocked this is a debut! 🤍Thank you @byashleyworrell for the gifted audiobook! 🤍

First, I am just blown away by the fantastic writing of this debut! The history, the dialogue, the setting, it was all done amazingly well!

The romance was very swoony and I thought the progression of Cara and Hector’s romance was beautiful.

This story also didn’t shy away from tough subjects, and they were handled with grace and care that I loved.

This Christian historical closed-door romance was heartbreaking with the trials but healing in the faith shown.

It walked the line between descriptive but not gory in a marvelous way.

It brought elements of one of my favorite Bible stories in as well.

I'm looking forward to the next book in this series and can't wait to reread this beautiful book that will likely live in my head forever.

Intimacy- High (Fade to Black, Closed-Door)
Language - None
Violence - High (Battle deaths and wounds but not “gory”)
Warning - Alcoholism, Physical and Verbal abuse, Infidelity, Death, Abandonment, Attempted rape, Abduction, Lying, Stealing

ALL THE STARS. This book had so many different elements to it I don’t even know where to begin. I have a severe book hang over. This book has faith, love, repentance, anguish, laughter…. As a Christian, I was so inspired by all the powerful faith filled messages. The symbolism with the moon through out the book was incredible. I loved all the flawed but love able characters. Like seriously SO MANY FANTASTIC CHARACTERS. But only two POV with Cara and Hector. The setting and history were so interesting. The action scenes were heart pounding. The humorous parts made me lol. The sweet tender parts were SO ADORABLE. The sad parts made me cry. So many hard things in the book but bc of Christ I felt so hopeful too! Hector is a protector and Cara a sweet angel. The plot and politics were so interesting and the many villain were horrible in different ways. It was such a unique book I couldn’t even identify any tropes for the review. I read the book instead of listened to it and I’m glad I did bc I had to reread and highlight so many passages. There were also helpful footnotes you wouldn’t get in the audiobook. But now I think I’m going to listen to it so I can experience the Scottish brogue haha. Be warned it is not a light hearted read, but one filled with so much depth. One that I will definitely read again.

REREAD 2:
It’s just as good the second time. I feel uplifted spiritually. Even though my heart hurts. I want to read the next one but I emotionally need a lighter read. I love how imperfect these characters are. But their hearts are in the right place. So they use the saviors atonement and are humble and become better. The miracles in this book make me sob! I love that Hector chooses to follow God rather than man when he marries Cara. He keeps the first great commandment before the second. I love that Cara doesn’t let hardships poison her soul by with holding forgiveness. Ugh! So many aspects of this book are amazing.
“If God has made you a skilled warrior, don’t be ashamed. Sometimes conflict is necessary to protect order, and to overcome those who wish to destroy good. Peace doesn’t mean passiveness. Peace requires courage. You’re not a murderer, you’re a protector. I’ve often wished that there was one to protect me.”
D&C 90:24
Search diligently, pray always, and be believing, and all things shall work together for your good, if ye walk uprightly and remember the covenant wherewith ye have covenanted one with another.
This is with Cara and me not having a baby yet.

SPOILERS and book notes:
Isle of Iona - May 15, 1378
First off the title “The Radiance of the Moon” is incredible and one of the reasons why I wanted to read this so bad. And the cover is pretty epic too. Hector MacLean is a solid Scottish name. After eight years his uncle embraced him like the prodigal son. I love the footnotes with information! It saves me time bc now I don’t have to google. She also gives us pronunciation right there too! “They are on Iona (pronounced eye-owna is a small island off the coast of the isle of Mull. The center of Gaelic faith and monasticism.” Some info from google about Gaelic: “Gaelic language and culture originated in Ireland, extending to Dál Riata in western Scotland. In antiquity, the Gaels traded with the Roman Empire and also raided Roman Britain. In the Middle Ages, Gaelic culture became dominant throughout the rest of Scotland and the Isle of Man” Poor hector having PTSD after a horrible battle turned to drink and he is addicted. His uncle though: ““The whisky eventually failed, but God never did. When he turned to prayer instead of drink, Bannockburn couldn’t touch him anymore.” This next line is a perfect metaphor for even when your very THOUGHTS turn to God: “Pádraig’s solution made his terror recede like a nightlight in a darkened room. Could prayer really achieve that?” He didn’t even pray yet, just the thought of praying and turning to God brought that light to his soul. Exactly like Alma the younger when he was in the pit of despair and only thought of Christ. And then when he was slipping he immediately closed his eyes to pray and when he opened it his uncle was right there beside him. God sends angels through people to answer our prayers. As soon as he stepped into the church and turned to God this happened: “The turmoil that burdened his shoulders eased as the Savior of the world took the yoke beside him.” And this: “You can’t change your past. Trust Me with your future. I will light the way.” He surrendered his will completely over to God. Hector was worried bc he had nothing to give the lord. But all the lord wants is our heart. Oooo cool Scottish folklore involving a dragon: “Beithir - (pronounced BAY-hith) In Scottish folk-lore the beithir was the largest and most deadly of serpents. Similar to a dragon but without fiery breath or wings, the beithir is equipped with a venomous sting.” Poor Hector has a bad scar on his face that makes it so he only can half smile. Now Cara five years later: Rathmullan, Ireland - March 15, 1383
Cara and her mother in law Margaret are like Ruth and Naomi from the Bible. Even though Ruth was in an abusive relationship with her husband Duncan she wouldn’t leave Margaret. They love and take care of each other. And survived the evil son/husband together. But now he is dead thank goodness. But Cara is barren and doesn’t think another husband will want her. Please have hector be boaz in this story!!! The find happiness and gratitude and blessings even in their horrible lives. “God knows who we need and who needs us.” What a cool analogy: “Like the humble Scottish thistle, Margaret had found a way to survive in the harshest of conditions. Unassuming but robust, she was able to root herself in faith and tolerate times of hardship.” They read stories from the New Testament!: “While Cara weaved, Margaret talked, recounting stories from the Scriptures. It was the first time Cara had learned the names Gideon, Abigail, and Ruth, and the first time she had learned the fruits of the Spirit and the many parables Jesus told.” And bc Margaret did this: “What Duncan broke down each night, Margaret faithfully rebuilt each day,”. There is a mink/weasle pet named fluffy that is Ursula’s (Margaret’s sister they are now living with) Oh my heck Hector has the cutest 5 nephews from his brother Lachlan and wife Mhairi: Young Hector, young John (most like him in temperament and looks), Neil, young Lachlan, and Somerled. Leo is holding on to bitter wrongdoings of Hector and it is only hurting himself. Let them go! Forgive and let Christ flood your life. Leo described Hector as a “berserker” on the battle field. Just like Fishlegs from how to train your dragon! Oh no! Cara is being persecuted bc she is Irish! And when she felt so lonely she sent a prayer heavenward and that is when she noticed the radiance of the moon and decided to put her loneliness in gods hands. And that is when our boaz (Hector) shows up!!! Hehehehe I think this could be a great motto: ““I’m trying to be a man who lives like he believes.” And Hector says this to Cara when she thinks she is insignificant: ““There are things only you can speak, a path that only you can walk, people only you can touch. Dinnae diminish your worth.” A strange intimacy coming from a near stranger, but words she needed to hear.” I love this: “The gloom of the terrible day had been punctuated by the glow of radiant moonlight—she was significant.” And after he saw her safely home after he helped her finish her field work she did this: “In a rush of reckless gratitude, she touched her fingertips to his neck and pulled his face gently down. Heart acting of its own volition, she touched her lips to his scarred cheek and kissed him in appreciation for his words, his care, and his protection.” Heheh she doesn’t know he is chieftain though. I love this next quote about a good leader: ““Any man can put money into his keep, but a leader knows to take care of his people first.” Callum and Murdoch are fantastic comic relief. Csllum tried speaking French to Leo and called him a monkey among other things LOL: “It was true to form for broken-down Lochbuie, dead pigeons, fish stink, and crude diplomacy. “He’s talking about breaking wind for the Kingdom of the Isles.”” Hector had his visions again and ran to the ocean. She was there to hold and take care of him. Comfort him when he was falling apart. There in the moonlight on the beach.
I love what Cara says about his fighting skills: ““If God has made you a skilled warrior, don’t be ashamed. Sometimes conflict is necessary to protect order, and to overcome those who wish to destroy good. Peace doesn’t mean passiveness. Peace requires courage. You’re not a murderer, you’re a protector. I’ve often wished that there was one to protect me.”” Awww he protected her from the mobs rocks and kicks by lying his body on top of hers and taking the beating instead!!! And then he went all bezerk and kicked the mobs butt after words about to strangle the guy who threw the first rock at Cara! ““Let go, brother.” Not a chance. Gregor had harmed his woman.” And then she asked for mercy when he was going to kill the men that did this to her. He was her champion and protector! And she is so humble and meek. And then later seeing her wounds he says: “I could wring the cowards neck.” Oh man the jealous rage when Hector sees her hand in Leo’s is the best. This was after he was determined to protect her like a sister. And then the dancing! He is so awkward and big like a bouncing bear. And then she invites the guy that hurt her to the party and apologizes and forgives him!! Who is this woman??? Christ wants us to give our shirt too when someone takes our coat. I love the scene where he reaches her how to shoot an arrow. AMD when she shows him up with gutting a fish. Also Elspeth is the WORST. I love that when Cara felt unloved and unworthy, Hector didn’t make it about himself or HIS love. He showed her Christ and Heavenly Fathers infinite love for her instead. Also this: “Cara was his woman, body and soul he belonged to her, and with his body and soul he would protect and fight for her.” I’m so happy they are getting married: “I’m no’ the man I used to be. I never tho’ God would give me a wife. I want to honor the treasure he’s given to me.”” I love this thought on God and how he blesses us: ““Dinnae rob me of my blessing. You are my gift. Wherever God leads us, or whatever he calls us to, his provision is already there. It might be just enough, not an abundance. But it is all that we need.” The wedding was everything I hoped it would be!!! “then put his cheek to hers and whispered the words he had longed to speak for months in her native tongue. “You are the most beautiful thing I’ve ever laid eyes on. I love you, my darlin’.” Surprise traveled across her face. “Me?” He chuckled and kissed her cool fingers. “Aye, you.” She responded in assured Scottish. “I love you, Hector.”” Awww and then this at the end of the ceremony!: “Spurred on by the sounds of triumph, Hector turned to his wife and fitted his mouth to hers again, savoring her softness, because he could. When they broke apart, he swept her into his arms and the berserker living within him let out a wild cry of victory.” What sweet tenderness from two people who love each other!!! “A peace that passed all understanding settled upon her and forced her heavy eyelids to close. She was loved. “I love you, Hector.” “Cara?” “Hmm?” “May I stay with you tonight? Only tae hold ye?” “Course ye can, daft man.” This book just hits different bc I have been struggling with infertility for 2 1/2 years now. Awww I’m so sad Tavish is a traitor!! I now know why every single review has this amazing quote: ““Tell me how to scale your walls and I’ll do it with my bare hands.” I love when she finally told him about what her husband did (freaking branded her with hot metal) he taught her how to fight! How to defend herself!!! Hector is just like captain Moroni. He wants men that will fight for the right reasons. To defend their families and their homes. Not for glory or revenge. Hector just wants peace. And peace does not come from passiveness. Peace requires courage. I love this about Hector: “but God examines the heart. And Hector has a good heart. He lets God working in it.” Awwwww she is pregnant! It’s a miracle!! But she went missing and kidnapped before she could find Hector to tell him! Freaking Tavish!!!! But Leo and Hector are brothers again. He helps Hector feel peace in all his fear for his pregnant wife being held captive by Tavish. Now a small band of volunteers are going to save her from the wolf’s hold. Aw!! Hector, Leo, Murdoch, Calum, Angus, David MacKenzie, and Iain Macleod. Hector had given her a psalter at the beginning with a note in Latin that she couldn’t read until now. And the note said that he loved her. HE LOVED HER FROM THE BEGINNING. I love that now she can look back at her trials and see Gods hand in her life. That He was there supporting her through them. “Hector was not a perfect man, but he was a repentant man.” I love that with the strength of a mother protecting her baby Cara beats the wolf!!! The sick devil. Awwww! Freaking Hector climbed a castle wall broke into a window to save his woman. And I love that the first thing they do is apologize to each other and tell each other they love them. The escape of the castle was so freaking epic!! Leo and Hector protecting Cara as they battle like true brothers through so much army!!! NO LEO SACRIFICED HIMSLEF SO THEY COULD ESCAPE. He was left behind and I am bawling!!!and gave his life for theirs!!! I freaking LOVE the way the author used the moon as a symbol of God lighting their path without them knowing. I higjlited all the parts when the moon shined down on them. It was there during all the significant events (good and bad). It may not always seem like it but GOD IS THERE. “but the Lord kept lighting the way just as he told me he would. Lighting the way to you. That radiant moon hung in the sky. First the night we met, then on the beach, the night I saved you on the barley field, then on Iona, and on the night we married, and finally the night I swam Lochindorb and scaled the walls to find you.” I loved that Hector made sure that first Cara had worth bc she was a daughter of God. And THEN he told her his undying love. I love that the last chapter before the epilogue ended like this: “She needed protection, and he became her fortress. With him, she belonged. With God, who had delivered her from the pits of hell, she belonged. She wanted to know more. “Hector?” “Yes, love?” “Will you teach me how to read?”” And then THAT EPILOGUE. The birth of their son that they named after her father and Leo. So much happiness. and the last line: “As he looked at his beautiful sleeping angel curled against his chest and their child in Margaret’s arms, his faith became sight. God had restored everything.” And then THE NEXT BOOK IS ABOUT LEO AND HECTORS DEAD DROWNED SISTER AILEEN!!!! How is this possible!?!?!?!? I AM SO FREAKING HAPPY THOUGH. Hector and his super awesome elite team are still fighting against the wolf though. The wolf. What an epic bad guy name. You MUST read the authors note at the end. This is her first novel but it took her 40 years to ponder and write it. The book shows just how much love and care went into it. She had similar experiences with finding Christ like the characters did too. And I can feel it while reading. I could feel the spirit and Gods love for me while reading. It honestly really inspired me.

Not enough stars!!!

Dear Ashley I’m not glad for the things you went through to create such a story as this but I am glad you were able to put that into something that can help others hopefully find closure or feel like they’re not alone.

I’m loving the way it’s shown that even tho we surrender that struggle can still be around the corner. I already feel for Hector as he is trying to make amends but sometimes people don’t make it easy. And Cara! Oh my heart! I can’t wait for her to see who she is through Hectors eyes! The part when she asked herself if anyone would love her for her🥺🥺. I’m happy to see this change take place for Cara. To be seen and loved is something we all crave and though we do know Jesus does this and is this for us there’s just something about seeing that same thing in a persons eyes and the way they are just there for you in the physical. I truly felt the statement Cara said to Leo about how God views us. Thats a powerful statement! I absolutely melted when she helped him come out of his visions. And prayed with him 🫠🫠🫠🫠. Soooo good!! The conflict with each other is something that we all can relate to and I will admit to being the person sometimes that says “if they would talk it’d be fine” but I realize this isn’t easy honestly for anyone. Especially survivors like Cara. All I felt in that moment was sorrow because she felt so broken. I’m an empathetic person as well as emotional so though I haven’t experienced anything remotely close to this my heart went out to her. I do love a protective hero so Hector has had my heart from the beginning! Even through his misgivings and even mistakes through his marriage with Cara I see his heart and his want to love and protect her. This was such a wonderful read I can’t wait till the next book. I’m hoping we get to see more of Cara and Hectors relationship!!!!!!

Dont read more unless you want spoilers.

Also I’m not one to be good at guessing parts of the story but I knew Cara was gonna experience a miracle in her marriage with Hector and be able to conceive!!!!! Oh my goodness I called that. And also I had a suspicion when they said the couldn’t find the sisters body that she just might not be dead

This book was everything my Christian-historical-romance-lovin heart needed. It deserves more than five stars, and I likely will be singing its praises for some time to come! The Medieval period - one of my top favorite historical settings - combined with the Scottish location? 👌 Pure literary perfection! My flabbers were gasted when I found out this was Ashley’s debut novel. The character development was on point, the writing was deep and captivating, the story flowed well and clipped at a perfect pace, and the plot was perfectly twisty and beautifully executed! The fact that this book is only a semi-finalist in the 2023 ACFW Genesis Contest and not a winner tells me Ashley Worrell had to have had very stiff competition in her category (please note: I did not look up the competition or results).

The depth of the characters and their development was unreal (in a good way). This story was inspired by the book of Ruth in the Bible, and you definitely can pick up on that as you read along. The beauty found in following God was highlighted well, and there were multiple times I felt myself tearing up or even stopping to praise God myself. This story inspired me to look inward at how I was pursuing Him in my own life. Ashley didn’t just have her characters find God and then glide forward through life as if everything was perfect. She portrayed the real struggle (and the great reward) that comes from accepting Christ! You don’t instantly change overnight, but one thing is for certain - no one meets the living God and comes away unchanged. God’s work in us is a constant reworking and sanctification process. To see that happen in these characters' lives was beautiful to read.

The romance in this book was SWOONY! I've never seen a "touch her and 💀" done so well in a Christian novel before. Both Cara and Hector have a past that plays out in very real, destructive ways in their current life. It felt so realistic to read, and I appreciated the depth it brought to the story!

This book yanked on my heart from beginning to end, and I cannot recommend it enough. I could write pages of praise, but the best thing for you to do is to read it yourself!

Bonus: It is available on Kindle Unlimited. 🥰

“The Radiance of the Moon” is the first book in The Hebridean Shield nine book series and I’m SO glad there is so much more to look forward to. It’s a story set in the 14th century in the Scottish Isles, and has elements that parallel the biblical story of Ruth and Boaz. It may be a romantic Christian fiction book, but make no mistake, it is a not to be missed triumphant, compelling, beautifully emotional story. There are trigger warnings that should be heeded, but the portrayal of moments where the characters struggle with PTSD are incredibly well done and provide depth and insight that anyone would benefit from.

The FMC is Cara O’Ballevan, an Irish widow. Her husband, who was an abusive, carousing lout has recently died, and her mother-in-law is moving back to Scotland to live with her clan. Cara pleads to go with her, as she is the only family Cara has now. She arrives in Scotland and is considered an outsider by the clan and poorly treated. She shows patience, strength, and resourcefulness and extends grace to those who curse her. She is an insightful, loving, nurturing woman with a tragic past, and is determined to make a home in Scotland.

The MMC is Chieftain Hector MacLean. He is a giant of a man. Hector had a privileged upbringing as the second son of the Laird, but a lot of tragedy and family anguish sent him fleeing Scotland as he grew into manhood. He spent years as a fighter and a mercenary, and fell into drunkenness and debauchery as his past sought to torture him when he was awake and sober. He finds himself back in Scotland quite by accident and finds faith and security, eventually being named Laird of his clan. But he still struggles with his past and his self worth. He has recently been convinced into a betrothal with a woman from a powerful family whose alliance would help keep peace in his lands.

There are aspects of political intrigue, strong elements of faith, found family, there’s battle buddy brotherhood, historical elements of Scottish clans, witty banter, fantastically immersive world-building, and a feeling of overarching redemption with a happy ever after.

Run, do not walk, to check out this book!!
