Я усвідомлюю, що це мої очікування, але мені не такої історії хотілося. Я не люблю такі трилер, не люблю оцю чорноту коктейлю з корупції і педофілії. Усе це занадто близько до реального життя, від якого якраз і хочеться трішки втекти у літературу.
Якщо ж лишити за дужками проблему моїх очікувань, то для такого сюжету усе склалося занадто поспішно. Якщо ж не хочеться розписувати, яким чином розрулилася кульмінаційна ситуація, то ми просто закриємо усе вставкою «тиждень потому». Відчувалося, що дебют.
Що ж, драми було багато, тривожності і непрофесійності - забагато. Але те, що автор намагався наділити головну героїню схожими на власні світовідчуттями, я ціную.
Якщо ж лишити за дужками проблему моїх очікувань, то для такого сюжету усе склалося занадто поспішно. Якщо ж не хочеться розписувати, яким чином розрулилася кульмінаційна ситуація, то ми просто закриємо усе вставкою «тиждень потому». Відчувалося, що дебют.

На 100% моя книга. Психологічний трилер/детектив, події якого розгортаються у маленькому містечку на похмурих скелястих берегах Шотландії. Головна героїня має розлад аутичного спектру і це подає історію у дуже незвичному ракурсі. При чому це настільки майстерно написано, що не відірватись! І це дебютна робота автора?! Не дивно, що ця книга настільки швидко опинилась в топах.

As somebody who works with neurodivergent students, I am always a little nervous when authors introduce autistic characters into novels. Freyer Sinclair is a reporter who has left her job in Glasgow to work in Orkney after a traumatic event. She has also recently undergone an assessment for autism and displays many autistic traits. At times, although I am pleased that this may help others understand the difficulties that female autistic people struggle with, this did seem to overtake the narrative.
On her first day working at the local paper, Freya spots a forensic team and discovers that two bodies have been unearthed. They are suspected to be a local girl that Freya was at school with, who vanished many years ago. We follow the investigation as Freya struggles with a new job, difficult co-workers and a new employer who wishes to take her off he case. This is an interesting novel, but somehow I struggled with it, feeling the plot was often sidelined. Obviously, this is meant to be a series, so perhaps it will improve as readers get to know Freya more.

However any idea of a quieter life is quickly dispelled as within hours of arriving, human remains are discovered and it's Freyas job as a reporter to investigate.
But like the Orkney soil, the tight, independent community also hides dark secrets. What unfolds is a gripping story of crimes that go well beyond a 17 year old murder.
Freya is also dealing with her personal issues with a possible diagnosis of autism hanging over her. While as in real life, her possible autism presents challenges, it also gives Freya the edge in noticing things that others don’t. I feel this was well handled both her ND personality traits and the mixed feelings she has about a possible diagnosis
Thoroughly enjoyed this one - pacy and well plotted and I loved the Orkney setting. I thought the writing was excellent and definitely kept me turning the pages. I really liked Freya and there's lots of action and twists but it never at any point felt far-fetched or unrealistic.
A cracking debut and I’m already very much looking forward to what Daniel does next

I absolutely raced through this fast paced, exciting murder mystery set in Orkney. Daniel Aubrey's writing skills and descriptions successfully transported me to winter in the dark islands. Newspaper reporter Freya is such a brilliant and complex character that I hope will appear in more books. Thank you to the publisher, the author and NetGalley for an arc.

Якщо чесно, я очікувала звичайний середньостатистичний трилер, де упор буде робитися на сам злочин, його розслідування, сюжетні повороти тощо. І це все в книзі, звісно, є, але я отримала навіть більше, ніж чекала: ця історія чіпляє своєю правдивістю, життєвістю, навіть... чуйністю?
Для головної героїні ця справа стає не просто роботою, а чимось особистим. Через це місцями стає боляче й нестерпно сумно, адже подібні злочини стаються і в реальності, й більша частина винуватців лишається непокараною (бо гроші, влада, репутація і далі по списку). Але не думайте, що тут суцільний морок: іноді автор дає привід усміхнутися, та і взагалі книга лишає приємний присмак надії на краще.
❤️ Дуже вподобала, як автор підіймає соціальні теми. Він не боїться робити це гостро, щоб аж защемило. Тут вам і про те, як часто в поліції нехтують показами та заявами жінок (бо сама винна, ти ж знала, що тебе могли зґвалтувати!), і про жахливі злочини проти дітей, і проблема діагностування аутизму (ви здивуєтесь, наскільки багато є нейровідмінних людей і з яких причин жінкам часто відмовляються ставити діагноз, сраки згорять, гарантую).
❄️ Окремої згадки заслуговує атмосфера: вона холодна, вітряна, сніжна — ідеально пасує до подій. Чого тільки вартує той факт, що вони відбуваються на північних островах, де світловий день закінчується раніше, ніж ви встигнете пообідати. Попри те, що це дебютний роман автора, він вдало прописав саспенс у потрібних сценах, і місцями він пробирав так, наче ти знаходишся поряд з героїнею, в такій само небезпеці.
А ще автору вдалося гарно показати стосунки, труднощі порозуміння людей з аутизмом зі своїми рідними. В деяких моментах поведінка героїні здавалася мені нелогічною, але якщо задуматись, то вона якраз дуже реалістична і жива. Особливо коли за спиною кілька травмуючих епізодів.
Якщо ви любите трилери та детективи, не проходьте повз, тим більше, що видання дійсно прекрасне: від вдалої м'якої палітурки, яка з легкістю переживає читання, до приємного перекладу ❤️

Історія цікава, але не настільки цікава, щоб мене захопити. Те саме з головною героїнею - це не дурна курка з "Діви", але її РАС описаний місцями занадто драматично, що ти навіть починаєш співчувати її оточенню.

Unfortunately, I just couldn't get into this book. I found it hard to connect or care about any of the characters, and I felt I didn't even know much about the main character for the majority of the book. I also found the italised paragraphs really random without a crumb of context for the majority (again). It didn't feel high stakes or have a lot of tension, and Freya was just generally unprofessional and in need of therapy. Thank you to netgalley for the arc.

Після повернення до Оркнейських островів журналістка Фрея, яка чекає результатів діагностики на аутизм, опиняється втягнутою в розслідування після того, як на острові знаходять людські кістки. Атмосфера цього місця стала ідеальним тлом для напруженого сюжету, а описи природи дозволяють ніби подорожувати разом із героями. Фрея – унікальний персонаж із власним світоглядом: іноді її вчинки складно зрозуміти, але саме це робить історію ще більш цікавою та глибокою. Сюжет тримає в напрузі й постійно підкидає нові загадки. Як для дебюту – це чудова книга.

I couldn't connect to this story. The main character was so overly dramatic that I had to skip/skim entire chapters to finish the book. The author tried to create suspense simply but withholding information--which was irritating rather than suspenseful. By the time the secrets were revealed, I'd lost interest.
In the end, it became clear that the author wasn't quite sure which 'mystery' was the mainstay of the book.

This was a fast-paced, gritty read. It was beautifully written with vivid imagery and not an ounce of descriptive cliche which I find in most thriller novels. I loved this brilliant and complex female lead and thoroughly look forward to the next instalment.

When investigative journalist, Freya Sinclair, returns to her childhood home of Orkney, she is expecting her working life to be considerably quieter and less stressful than the position she has left behind in Glasgow. However, when human remains are uncovered during a stormy night, it turns out to be the start of an investigation into a disturbing conspiracy - and all this while Freya is also waiting on the outcome of an autism assessment.
There are some really impressive elements to this debut novel from Daniel Aubrey. The backdrop of Orkney with its unique history and character creates an appealing setting for the action. The various members of the dramatis personae are relatable and well-drawn. The mystery at the heart of the storyline is credible, engaging and as the narrative unfolds there are moments of genuine nail-biting tension. Against these positive characteristics, there are also aspects that aren't executed quite as slickly as they could have been. One of the downsides of being a series opener is that the author has to cover a lot of groundwork and not only introduce a cast of characters, but also make sure that the reader can gain a sound insight into the key players - particularly the central protagonist. It can be tricky to strike a suitable balance and I am not convinced that Daniel Aubrey consistently hit the sweet spot. There were a number of occasions where Freya's emotional state and fraught reaction to various situations became a touch frustrating. Yes, the reader needs to understand her character, challenges and motivation, but, at times, I felt this caused pacing issues by getting in the way of the mystery at the heart of the story rather than enhancing it.
Nonetheless, the overall impression of "Dark Island" is a positive one and there is certainly enough here to tempt me to come back for the next book in the series.

The island has other ideas though as human remains have been discovered on her first day at the local newspaper, a far cry from the type of story she thought she’d be covering. As Freya starts to investigate she opens up old wounds for herself and the island, uncovering secrets that refuse to stay buried.
As much as this is a gripping crime novel it’s also a character-driven story about Freya herself. We meet her whilst she’s waiting for the outcome of an autism assessment, something which she hopes will help her make sense of who she is and why she often feels out of place. I found the description of Freya as an undiagnosed, autistic woman to be the most authentic portrayal I’ve ever read, particularly her concerns about the implications of not getting a diagnosis. We get to see the highs and lows of her experience, from being overwhelmed and unable to change course to seeing patterns and narratives that make her so successful in her job.
All of the characters in the book are fantastic (although the jury’s out on fellow reporter Gill!), and Orkney itself feels like one of those characters! The small, relatively remote island feels like the perfect place for a crime novel. With its tight-knit community, rugged landscape, and abundance of historical sites there’s plenty of intrigue and mystery.

Mr. Aubrey lives up to the promotional writings for his first book. It IS a mystery AND a thriller - particularly in the latter chapters when he’s bringing things to a climax.
His characters are well-developed - particularly his primary protagonist - who (one suspects) registers somewhere on the spectrum of Autism complexes. It may not be easy for all readers to “relate” to her in this respect but I had several students who manifested similar characteristics when I taught High School at a Boarding School for students with “learning differences”. I found it relatively easy to understand her - most of the time. Freya is a complex young woman - an investigative journalist who turns into a dogged detective in pursuing a story of abuse and evil.
And I spent 10 days on Mainland (the largest of the Orkney Islands) just five years ago - based in Kirkwall and driving to see the fantastic Neolithic history on display there. With a refresher on the islands’ geography, I had a very clear image of where the action took place. Aubrey is faultless in his portrayal of the islands.
My only problem with this book was the large number of characters involved and their interwoven history. I had difficulty keeping everyone straight at times. And the plot had such a surprise twist at the end that it was difficult to UNtwist at times.
I think we are set up for a second book in this series - where I will expect to see author development and writing refinement that will be most enjoyable.

Den här boken blev jag besviken på. Jag är själv utbildad till journalist och detta känns bara allt för overkligt. Att huvudpersonen gång efter gång ger sig ut på livsfarliga uppdrag helt ensam är inte realistisk för fem öre. Orkade knappt läsa klart.

Автор дуже побіжно прописав героїв, ні до кого не привʼязуєшся, нікому не співчуваєш, немає оцього лампового відчуття маленького містечка. А головна героїня (нереалістично) занадто тривожна, ну просто майже весь текст вона на межі панічної атаки. Від її внутрішніх монологів мене сильно захитувало. Вона страшенно бісила всю книгу.
Стиль автора загалом важкуватий (дуже помітно, що писав чоловік - багато сексизму, лукізму й крінжових жартів), тема вже заюзана, сюжет передбачуваний, діалоги місцями натужні й дещо в лоб, а персонажі надто картонні й нарочиті, неприродні.
Постійні повтори і зайві пояснення роблять читання ще нуднішим, головна інтрига не чіпляє, книга навіює сон.
Але атмосфера холодних вітряних шотландських островів тут присутня, читати її влітку доволі приємно. За це бал, ще один за милу собаку.

Хороша історія з своїми родзинками. Було цікаво прожити такий непростий період життя, як зміна роботи та переїзд, з людиною з ознаками аутизму. В історії вистачило всього, що треба: поступове розкриття особистої історії та послідовне розкриття подробиць розслідування, що пов’язане з минулим героїні — люблю таке.
Головне для мене — можна було розслідувати разом з героїнею: якщо бути уважним, легко зрозуміти, що до чого. Злочин виявився не таким простим. Добре, що нас не надто глибоко занурювали у важкі моменти, і книга читалася легко та з інтересом.
Я змогла зануритися в історію, тому все ж — 5. Без шаленого захвату, але й знімати бали не хочеться.

Ой яку класну книгу я прочитала вже в цьому році першою! Атмосферна новинка від накриє вас атмосферою напруженої історії, кримінальної загадки, що огорнуто кількома гарячими соціальними темами.
Автор прагнув створити роман, де є нейровідмінний персонаж, це не роман про аутизм, але у цій книзі він майстерно зобразив світ людини з РАС, чим порушив важливу тему прийняття та розуміння різноманітності людей довкола нас.

Автор прагнув створити роман, де є нейровідмінний персонаж, це не роман про аутизм, але у цій книзі він майстерно зобразив світ людини з РАС, чим порушив важливу тему прийняття та розуміння різноманітності людей довкола нас.

Непоганий детектив-дебют, хоча в мене є певні питання до сюжетної лінії. Цікавий той факт, що автору поставили діагноз - аутизм (РАС) в 2022 році, власне це питання він піднімає в книзі. Історія дуже динамічна, аж занадто, тому читається швидко та легко. Сподобались яскраві описи Оркнейських островів в Шотландії.
Місцями книга якась аж занадто фантастична, але загалом читати цікаво. Для поціновувачів детективів, раджу звернути увагу.

Цікава детективна лінія, інтригуючий сюжет, атмосферний стиль, кліфхенгер на продовження.

Dark Island is Daniel Aubrey’s debut novel. Orkney, in midwinter, is quite literally, a dark island, with just 6 hours of sunlight daily. Freya, and her husband Tom, have recently moved from Glasgow. For Tom it’s a new beginning, for Freya it’s a return home.
Freya’s arrival coincides with the discovery of shallow buried bones, uncovered on the beach, by a winter storm. As the local newspapers’ newest reporter, she is thrown straight into reporting on the case.
While Freya is being drawn deeper into the investigation, and the murky past of some of the dubious Orcadians, Freya’s mind is constantly distracted by the autism assessment results, which weigh heavily on her.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and found myself gripped by the fast paced story. The characters were all distinct, fully formed and interesting. The addition of a lovable Labrador to the cast, is always a hit with me.
I loved the setting of Orkney, it’s beauty, bracing weather and open spaces. I find myself increasingly drawn to books set in the islands, above the coast of mainland Scotland.
I specifically want to mention Freya’s character. I loved the inclusion of a neuro diverse character at the heart of the book. Many of her thoughts and observations brought a smile of recognition to me.
The very end of the book, with the letter, and the subsequent conversations, I found to be extremely moving.
Finally I really wanted to recommend this book to anyone who has a loved one on the spectrum, also to those who don’t. I think everyone should read Dark Island, to have a small window into the thoughts of someone who is neuro divergent; to help with understanding of difference.
It has been so incredibly helpful and moving for me. Thank you Daniel, thank you for sharing Freya and her thoughts with me.
I very much look forward to whatever Daniel writes next, and would love to have a second book set in the same location, to revisit these characters. 5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from me.

When reporter Freya leaves Glasgow and moves back to Orkney where she grew up, she is waiting for the results from her autism assessment. Bones are discovered on the island and Freya finds herself caught up in trying to uncover the truth.
This book has it all – a great setting, fascinating characters and a gripping plot.
I love a story that allows you to travel to a new place – whether that is somewhere I've never been to or even somewhere I've not read about before. I really enjoyed the descriptions of the setting and found it to be the perfect backdrop for the story that was taking place.
I have never come across a character like Freya before. As the reader you get to see her unique perspective and I always felt like I had a clear idea of how she felt and perceived situations. I did struggle to understand her reasoning sometimes but I found this a really eye-opening and thought-provoking experience.
Dark Island has one of those plots that keeps you guessing and really ramps up the tension as you progress through the book.
A brilliant debut novel that is an excellent addition to the crime genre.
