SOMETHING VERY WRONG: A COLLECTION OF LURID BODY HORROR [2023] By Jonathan Butcher My Review 4.1 Stars Out Of 5
Extreme Horror Fans are familiar with the name of English author Jonathan Butcher, and this year Jonathan has been nominated for a Splatterpunk Award in the category of Best Collection. I have read his novel “What Good Girls Do” and it was very well written and it truly pleased me when Jonathan read my review and liked it.
This is an exquisite collection for those fans of extreme horror who gravitate to body horror first because this particular subgenre excites and fascinates them the most.
There are eight stories in the collection, and the author included a Bonus Story that he had written some time ago. I considered only the stories in the current body horror collection. * It has become my habit to rate each individual tale and then average the total to arrive at an overall rating.
*I enjoyed the Bonus Story but did not include it in calculation of the rating because there was an element of the tale which was used in one of the stories in the author’s current collection. Butcher points this out in AUTHOR’S NOTE.
This was a top shelf offering from Butcher, creating stories of body horror, his favorite sub-genre. My three favorites earned 5 Stars. These were FAMILY RECIPE, BENEATH THE MOOR, and ALTERNATE ROUTE. Overall rating on the collection of eight entries was a respectable 4.1 Stars.
COLLECTION OF LURID BODY HORROR FROM JONATHAN BUTCHER’S FAVORITE HORROR SUB-GENRE
Wow! This is a fantastically bonkers read, with a remarkable variety of body horror for fans of the genre to binge-read. 'Something Very Wrong' is an apt title for this nasty and original extreme horror collection, and I look forward to reading more from this author!
Hit after hit in this collection, not a single story failed for me. I am a sucker for well-written extreme horror and Jonathan really is an immensely brilliant author. If you're looking for something satisfyingly sick and body horror is your jam, definitely pick this one up. There's a really unique spread of stories inside!
Holy hell what a fuckin bad ass collection. This is just like a buffet of body horror. There is something here for everybody that likes things violent bloody brutal and squishy. Jonathan Butcher is a vivid razor sharp storyteller and he brings it with this collection. Highly recommend this one especially to body horror fans
“Ross’s tiny sister leapt above the desk, lifted by a blur of glittering, chopping metal. Beneath her, the grey desk was suddenly red.”
Wow… I knew this would be an insane collection of stories after the second one in the book (awesome but horrifying by the way!).
Each one was incredible and a couple even reminded me of one of my favourite movies, “Malignant” (IFYKYK). It’d honestly be impossible to pick just ONE favourite!
I’m starting to enjoy splatterpunk/extreme/body horror more and more, and authors like Jonathan Butcher are the reason why. He crafts actual stories, with interesting characters, plots, and purpose; it’s not just a nonsensical blood bath (most of the time), or if it is, it’s a non gratuitous blood bath that furthers the story.
All readers and fans of the more gooey & gory side of horror, or those just dipping their toes in, should grab this book of short stories to enjoy ASAP!
Jonathan is one of my favourite authors, and body horror one of my favourite sub genres, so this was of course, a no brainer!! 🧠 Turns out it's a bloody brilliant collection too! All fantastically dark and disturbing, and all completely engrossing, gross reads. Body horror at its stomach churning, vagina clenching best!! 😁 My standouts were DRILLDO, THE PROJECT, A THREESOME WITH CARICIA, and ALTERNATE ROUTE.
As always, I will write a few words for each story, and there is absolutely no holding back as the collection kicks off with DRILLDO…. Ola likes to push the boundaries when it comes to sexual gratification, to the extremest of limits. As the title suggests, she likes a bit of DIY when it comes to pleasuring herself, but when things go horrifically wrong and she ends up in hospital, things go even more wrong when a familiar doctor arrives and she makes full bloody use of her current predicament.. It wasn't only my teeth I was clenching with tense anticipation from the moment I read the title, I'm pretty sure I have the strongest pelvic floor muscles after clenching my way through the whole story!! 😂
THE PROJECT…. It's science project day and Miss Chesterfield is underwhelmed to say the least, but not for long, as she still has her least favourite pupil left to see. Ross is a bit of a character, one that attracts trouble, so when she discovers his project, she is shocked, but not really surprised. Although Ross seems equally shocked, a lot of blood, sweat and tears went into his project, and chaos, panic and carnage are the end result! Chilling and utterly horrifying.
FAMILY RECIPE…. Pascoe wants to tell us a story about the Cornish Pasty, more specifically his family's secret recipe and the title they hold for the Pasty Crown. He awakens one morning to his farm ablaze, he loses everything, including his will to live. Until his pasty crown is threatened that is, and he comes up with an all new recipe, a true recipe for disaster, Gloriously gruesome.
DRIPPING WET…. Zed is at the lake after a row with his wife about other women. His horny prayers are answered when a beautiful woman appears before him out of the lake, dripping wet, naked and full of cold karma! Darkly funny.
BENEATH THE MOOR…. Mike and Howard are off for a stroll on Bodmin Moor. Unbeknownst to Howard, Mike has a plan, and it's not the Beast of Bodmin they need to worry about.. As the mist rolls in, Howard becomes one with the moor, and revenge is quickly sought…. Nightmarish.
A THREESOME WITH CARICIA…. Stephen is on a promise, a triple promise, and this time, instead of paying for it, he's been propositioned, he can't believe his luck. Natalya and her sister have promised him something very different, which is precisely how he likes it….or is it? He enjoys experimenting with sex, likes it to be unconventional, and that's exactly what it's going to be this time, in ways he could never imagine…. this bitch bites back! Disturbingly good!
ALTERNATE ROUTE…. Martin has been dipping his toes into a new hobby, Gore, and when he and Hakim set off to a gig in Birmingham, using the newly updated satnav, and that satnav comes up with a quicker alternative, of course they take it. Martin then gets to delve into his new hobby in much more depth and realism, and he also gets to try out the practical side of things, much to his newfound delight. It seems the new AI update for the satnav is proving to be helpful in ways he could never imagine…. Creepy as fuck…. be very careful with your internet searches! *clears history immediately* Truly terrifying!
LAST NIGHTS GIG…. HOLY WTF!?!? 🤘😂🤘 This gig is fucking WILD!! I kind of wanna go see Scrotum Grenade for myself! 😉
BONUS STORY…. CHAGRIN…. James and his stepdad Nigel love to hate each other. The pair love nothing more than winding each other up, but when Nigel declares that he has convinced James' mum that James is ready to move out, James decides it's time to fight back. All the time fighting an annoying, insatiable itch, and something like a conscience or two, with teeth, whispering advice in his ear and leading to dire consequences.
There's something very right with Something Very Wrong, especially if you're a fan of body horror! 🖤
This was just as great as I expected. I’ve read a few of Mr Butcher’s books before and they do not waver in quality. I think my favourite story was Alternate Route. I felt like I could smell, taste and feel everything in this story. I should not have read this at night on my own in the dark. There was also the best description of gore ever: “Scarlet slop”. All of these stories were perfectly disgusting, unsettling and so visceral. I feel quite a few of the creatures will not be forgotten for some time. This was breath taking at times and I would not be able to quote any of those scenes here but safe to say it was rather violent. I still wince when I think about a lot of them. I now need a lie down and cuddle.
Oh gory goodness...where do I start. 9 short stories of just complete madness and body horror. Fun for all here folks. From the opening salvo of "Drilldo" to the 'extra', "ChaGrin" this book does not fail to disgust...and I'm here for it. Highlights are Drilldo, Family Recipe, A Threesome With Caricia, and Last Night's Gig. Thank you so much for putting this together....what a trip!
I have yet to read anything mediocre or sub-par from this author. A great set of stories that had me itchy and wanting to cross my legs. Fast-paced stories that get right to it, never droning on. Definite thumbs up!
my first book by jonathan butcher and 100% not my last. this was such an amazingly curated collection of extreme body horror. the stories were so well written and engaging. i had a really hard time putting this one down. i cannot wait to read more of his work!
A fantastical collection of gory short stories; body horror to cosmic. There’s something for everyone! My favorite has to be “A Threesome with Caricia” - watch out for the teeth! I recommend you check out this collection!
An absolutely amazing collection of nine body horror shorts. I'm highlighting my favorites here:
"Dripping Wet": 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐙𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫, 𝐢𝐧 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐝: 𝐬𝐨𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐞𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐧𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐝. This story totally reminded me of the Sirens in Greek mythology. A short, nasty tale about the fallout of giving in to temptation.
"Beneath the Moor": "𝐘𝐨𝐮'𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭," 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐤𝐬, 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐇𝐨𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝'𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐬. "𝐖𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞." The dialogue in this story was impeccable. A devious little tale of hubris and its mean-spirited repercussions.
"A Threesome with Caricia" : 𝐀𝐭 𝟑𝟓, 𝐡𝐞'𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐠𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐞𝐬, 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬, 𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐬, 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬. This one was WILD. A lonely man whose face is marred by a scar seeks companionship from alternate sources. He's going to wish he had turned down this particular threesome with two sisters.
"Alternate Route": "𝐘𝐨𝐮'𝐫𝐞 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚 𝐆𝐏𝐒 𝐚𝐩𝐩!" Probably my favorite of the collection, although this one is going to upset some folks, so mind your triggers. This story will make you think twice about granting permissions when your apps update. I loved the timeliness of this tale as well.
"ChaGrin": 𝐉𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐰𝐨𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐰𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧'𝐬 𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞: "𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝𝐧'𝐭." An author's note appears before this story, and although technically it's an add-on and not a part of the collection, it flows seamlessly with the others. If you are someone who always lives in the gray area and sees both sides of a morally complex issue, you will love this story.
Not a story below four stars in this collection. Available now on KU and I hope in paperback as well, as I need a copy for my collection!
Something Very Wrong: A Collection of Lurid Body Horror. By Jonathan Butcher
First off, I want to thank the author for providing me with this book in exchange for an honest review!
Well, that was gross, in many different ways. This was a great collection of short stories full of all different types of body horror.
Two of my favorites were "Alternate Route" and "Last Night's Gig". I enjoyed most of the stories, those two just stood out to me. There were one or two stories that just weren't for me, but that's fine.
This gets a 4⭐️ rating from me. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys disgusting body horror with very descriptive imagery in a short story format.
Are you looking for some extreme body horror? Are you looking for multiple short stories that are all, in my opinion, deserving 5 stars? Then this book is for you.
Jonathan is an amazing talented writer who knows how to deliver sick, twisted and oh so satisfying stories. There’s at least one story for everyone in this book. My top favorite has to be Scarlet Slop!!
You will definitely think about these stories (and their monsters) for a while.
Jonathan does an outstanding job with this collection of body horror stories. They’re gruesome, gore filled, and well written. I enjoyed all the stories, but Family Recipe was one of my favorites. Definitely worth a read!
That was weird as fuck (which is great). Some of the stories were for me, some weren't, but overall I ended up enjoying the last few stories most. I really digged Alternate Route!
Oooof! This is a great, gross, uncomfortable collection of stories! Each story makes you want more but wraps up so perfectly that you're still satisfied. Not for people who get squeamish easily, but absolutely perfect for people that love pushed limits.
Would recommend.
Many thanks to Jonathan Butcher for a copy of the book. All opinions are of my own.
Something wonderfully gross! This collection has some real gems in it. From human zits to AI run amok, Jonathan Butcher is a master at making you squirm. Highly recommend this book to anyone with a strong stomach.
Story #1 was the best for me, loved the ending. The bonus story felt very profound. The Project was the most interesting of them. I liked the GPS one too.
The writing and the theme handling felt a little inconsistent... but, if you fancy imploding from absolute discomfort, this might be your thing. Otherwise, skip.
Although I didn't really like this collection, I feel it's only fair to not penalize the author with a bad rating. It's just that I guess I don't like this kind of horror, "body horror". The writing is great and I did enjoy the story about a band selling out, it was great! Just not the kind of horror I like, I guess!
Either I am not used to this, or it isn't as gory as I wanted it to be. Took me too long to finish the book and no story held my attention for long. Return window for this book on Amazon was over, so I guess I shall take this purchase as a big L
Unhinged, unapologetic, unadulterated CARNAGE. Within this book is a collection of off-the-wall splatterpunk fever dreams that will make you laugh, cringe, and scream "what the ACTUAL F---."
Triggers? Yes. Sick, twisted entertainment? Also yes. And while the body horror grossed me the hell out, it also challenged me to try and picture some of the impossible mutilation, contortions, and mutations that were described here. JB's love for The Thing and classic body horror definitely shines through while he throws in a few modern twists of his own.
