A well written and touching marriage of convenience story with intrigue and danger.
Those who have read Ms. Grandinetti before will recognize some characters and the setting in Wisconsin.
Widow Marian Ward has two girls and looks after her Mother-In-Law, Elaine. She is having a hard time making ends meet after Robert Cox swindled her our of her money. Gilbert Cox is nothing like his father and comes to make restitution to those his father harmed. Due to extenuating circumstances, Gil offers to marry Marian.
I liked the tie in to Anne of Green Gables, when Nettie and Essie ask Gil if he is named after Gilbert Blythe and he settles in to read Anne to the girls. Gil is compassionate and really cares for Marian and her family. Gil wanted “to be her protector, her provider, to redeem what his father had broken.” Both he and Marian seek guidance from God and advice from Pastor Moller.
With dramatic scenes and threatening villains, this book keeps you guessing at who is causing trouble and who is really an ally.
Another wonderful historical novel.

My favorite of the series so far

This is a fun return to Crow's Nest, where Gilbert Cox (son of a former enemy) enters into a marriage of convenience with widowed mother Marian Ward to protect and provide for her and her family. As with previous books in the series, there is suspense and danger as as a developing love story. Familiar characters return and more details emerge about the mysterious conglomeration. Fun references to Anne of Green Gables also are featured as well as themes of a mother's love and overcoming painful family legacies.

Danger, suspense, and romance have been key factors in the previous Harbored in Crow's Nest books, and author Danielle Grandinetti continues this winning format in Relying on the Enemy. How far is Gilbert Cox willing to go to atone for his father's sins? Will young widow Marian Ward agree to a marriage of convenience with the son of a man who ruined her family?

This intriguing story, set in Crow's Nest, Wisconsin, is filled with tension and unanswered questions but there are also many moments of grace and forgiveness. Gilbert is immediately drawn to Marion's young daughters, and they are just as taken with him. The circumstances may be unconventional but the budding relationship between these two unselfish people is a joy to behold. If they can only stay safe long enough!

If you enjoy a marriage of convenience trope and historical Christian suspense, you'll want to read Relying on the Enemy. There's also a teaser for the next book in the series.

If you haven't visited Crow's Nest yet, here's a great reason to do so. This marvelous new story from Danielle is chock full of suspense, intrigue, romance, family and finding a true home. Each of these books has drawn us further and further along in the big mystery that flows through each story. We still don't have all the answers yet but that only makes me excited to read the next one. I loved getting to know Marian better and seeing her find love with Gilbert. There was lovely tie in with this romance from one of my favorite classic books in this story that I'm hoping other readers will see and enjoy as well. Definitely recommend that you get this book and the whole series on your TBR because it should not be missed.

Relying on the Enemy is actually the fourth book in the Harbored in Crow’s Nest series by Danielle Grandinetti. The book is written in a way that it can be easily read as a standalone. Reading the previous books will give more insight to the character and backstory though. This book is set during the winter of 1931 in Wisconsin. It is the story of Marian Ward, a widowed mother of two young girls, who is also trying to take care of her ailing mother in law. She is unable to find work, and has been sacrificing for her family when she suddenly finds herself in danger after overhearing part of a conversation. Gilbert Cox, the son of a man who harmed her family, arrives to make amends, and ease his conscience for his father’s wrongdoings. Marian finds herself with two choices. One, she can rely on the enemy by marrying the son of the man who ruined their lives, and is a stranger to her. Her only other option is to try and keep her family safe on her own with no resources, and her desperation at an all time high.

I felt that the marriage of convenience was believable based on the time and circumstances. I also thought that their relationship progressed realistically as they learned to trust, rely, and get to know each other. This was a heartwarming story of forgiveness and redemption with an element of mystery and suspense. Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. All views I voluntarily expressed are my honest opinion.

This series just keeps getting better and better! I loved this book. The mystery and the danger was exciting, the romance was adorable, and the tie-ins to Gilbert Blythe and Anne of Green Gables were my absolute favorite! This will definitely make my favorite reads list for 2024. A fantastic read!

Genre: historical romance
Troupe: marriage of convenience
Steam Level: just kissing
Do I recommend: yes.

Historical fiction has always been a favorite genre to read. So, when I saw that this book was historical fiction, I knew I had to read it.

“She's protecting her children. He’s redeeming his past.”

This book delivered in showing a man who was learning what it means to redeem, to protect, and to love unconditionally.

I like the growth that Marian and Gilbert went through. Marriage of convenience is a favorite trope. Gilbert was a sweet man who wanted to right wrongs even though it was his wrong to right. I love the way the author intertwined faith throughout this story. It is truly encouraging in how it shows that sometimes it's so hard to press on and trust God, but that in the end, it is truly worth trusting him, even in the unknowns.

There is so much that I can say, but I don't want to spoil the story! It's so hard to write reviews when I want to say more!!

Overall, it was beautiful. A slow burn and a story of redemption. I liked how it was a mystery of some sorts.

Thank you Just Read Tours for this complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are of my own!

I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in this series and the premise had me hooked for this one. It sure started off with a bang, and the fast pace and action continued. For me personally the romance developed too quickly and took center stage over the rest of the plot, however I admit that I am a story first/romance second reader. So for those who are primary romance readers, this one is sure to be worth the read. Gilbert was a likable hero who felt the weight of his father's actions, desiring to do what he could to correct them. Marian was effected by Gilbert's father's choices, but she had a family to provide for and had no choice but to keep going. How they came together may have been through unfortunate circumstances, but the characters themselves are what made it work. Because they were able to see outside of themselves and think of others. So while I wish the romance was toned down more for realism, I still liked the characters and how they selflessly fought for others.

Relying in the Enemy was a good book. Even though historical romance is not my favorite, this story had suspense in it, which held my attention.
And I did like the marriage of convenience put in the story. I really loved how Marion relied on her faith in God throughout everything that happened to her and her family.
Gilbert's a man of honor, which is totally unlike his honor. So he's going to all the ones his father ruined and making amends. When Marion finds herself in trouble and being threatened, he steps in and offers to marry her for her protection.
But will they come to truly love each other? And who's threatening them. The ending was a total surprise for me.

I loved returning to this band of characters trying to survive the beginnings of the Great Depression in their small town. The Anne of Green Gables references made it that much more enjoyable. Marriage of convenience mixed with a mystery even the characters are having trouble unraveling. It was a suspenseful and fun read, though I do feel that the romance was rushed.

This book was such an amazing addition to the Harbored in Crow's Nest series. As she is seeking employment to feed her children, widow Marian Ward overhears a conversation that puts her life in danger. Shortly after, a stranger appears on her doorstep, Gilbert Cox, who is wanting to make restitution for harm his father caused to her family, previously. These two situations quickly become entwined. As danger increases, Gilbert is determined to help Marian, causing more threats and further danger.

I love the setting of Crow's Nest, Wisconsin, and learning more about its residents, their problems, and concerns as this community in 1931 is struggling through the effects of the Great Depression. Danielle Grandinetti writes intense suspense that keeps the reader totally engaged. Coupled with realistic emotions from her characters, this book is another winner. I am anxious for the next book in the series. Also, there is a hint that another series could branch off of this one. I certainly hope that will become reality as I enjoy reading this author.

A widow desperate to support her daughters and ailing mother-in-law and her enemy’s son is an unexpected pairing in Danielle Grandinetti’s Relying on the Enemy. This convenient marriage plot is sweet, contentious, and laced with both peril and longing as Marian and Gilbert face issues of trust and integrity. If you love a 1930’s era romance with suspense and faith elements as much as I do, this is a must read in the fantastic Harbored in Crow’s Nest series.

Highly recommended.

Another Amazing Book

This book was just as awesome as the previous ones in this series. The storyline, the characters, the suspense, the danger, the faith lived out day by day, and always God's hand leading His people. I can't wait to read the next book! They are all hard to put down!

My Thoughts

Harbored in Crow's Nest #3
Relying on the Enemy is written by Danielle Grandinetti. This is book three in the Harbored in Crow’s Nesd series. I’ve enjoyed this series so much. This book can be read as a stand alone, however you will fall in love with this series and read all of them.

Marian Ward is facing some hard choices. She’s a widow and facing the harsh winter with no income. She happens to overhear a conversation she’s not supposed to and suddenly her life along with her children’s are in danger.

Gilbert belongs to the man who ruined Marian’s family. He wants to right the past. He wants to show he’s not the swindler that his father is. He recognizes the threat to Marian’s life and offers to help her out. A marriage of convenience.

Seeing them navigate their new reality was fun to read. Marian maybe safe and under Gilbert’s protection, but the danger doesn’t stop. It only seems to intensify. In true Grandinetti fashion there’s suspense lurking around the corner. Her stories are always so engaging and you’re drawn in within the first few pages.

Welcome to Crow’s Nest, where danger and romance meet at the water’s edge. Set in the 1930’s the author has woven a wonderful historical fiction suspense.
Thank you to the author, publisher and JustRead Publicity tours. All thoughts are my own.

Relying on the Enemy
Harbored in Crow's Nest #4
By Danielle Grandinetti

Marian Ward needs a job, but times are tough, and jobs are scarce. And a widow with two young children and an ill mother-in-law just isn't in a position to seek employment farther away when she can't afford to buy gas for an auto much less keep her home warm and food on the table. But when she overheard a portion of a conversation, she finds herself in the wrong place at the wrong time and now very much in danger.

Gilbert Cox has come to make amends for the sins of his father. And at the top of his list is the Ward family. But when he steps in to protect Marian, he finds himself in a bind. His employer demands he marry Marian - make an honest woman of her, or else lose his job on the spot and any future employment anywhere! Talk about a big mess. All of which could be blamed on his father's greed and cruelty. Well, things being what they were, Marian and Gilbert were all too quickly married and trying to piece all this sudden and unexpected change in situation into some semblance of order.

But a marriage of convenience doesn't end the danger. Rather, it seems to intensify. How a small portion of an overheard conversation could cause so many problems is perplexing. But to keep his new family safe, Gil will have to figure it out. And Marian isn't about to hide away, not with danger threatening her daughters.

This was an excellent read set in 1931 Wisconsin. And it is well worth your time. I have to admit I love reading books that have a local flavor. This is a perfect blend of history, romance, and mystery.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Historical Romance with Suspense is a great genre to read. Relying on the Enemy by Danielle Grandinetti is one that I recently had the honor to read. It is Book 4 in the Harbored in Crows Nest series. I have not read the first 3 books in the series, but this one seemed to read well as a Stand Alone.

We are taken back to Wisconsin in 1931 for the setting and time of the book. Marian Ward is a widowed mom who is trying to take care of her girls on her own. She is struggling to do so because it is Winter and she has no income and other resources are slowing becoming scarce. She is really worried when she receives a threat that endangers the life of her and her girls. Gilbert Cox is hoping to make things better for the Ward family after his father ruined life for them. Gilbert wants to protect Marian and the girls and he puts out an offer to marry Marian. Will Marian agree to a Marriage of Convenience? If they marry, will there be a real love relationship?

I really enjoyed the book from beginning to end. I was excited when I discovered it was a Marriage of Convenience theme as I LOVE that storyline. Marian is a strong woman and I LOVE that her focus was on her girls and Mother In Law and making sure they are taken care of. Gilbert is a HERO in my opinion. He saw how the Ward family was wronged by his father and he set out to make things right. The book has many twists and turns and kept me wondering who was threatening them. The ending was beautifully written. Marian and Gilbert put their faith and trust in God and that was wonderful. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Romance with Suspense. WONDERFUL BOOK!

I have recently discovered the novels of Danielle Grandinetti and was excited to be able to participate in the blog tour for her latest, Relying on the Enemy. I can truthfully say that I was not disappointed.

It was fun to return to Crow’s Nest and get to know some of its residents a little better, especially widowed Marian Ward and her family. Facing a long winter with no job, an ailing mother-in-law, and limited resources, Marian desperately looks for answers to their problem. To make matters worse, she overhears a conversation that puts her life in danger and her family threatened. All seems hopeless when who should also appear is the son of the man who nearly destroyed the Ward family. He had come to attempt to make amends but could they trust him? The situation seemed to grow more dire by the minute and Marian was forced to make some difficult choices before it was too late.

Relying on the Enemy is one of those books that takes the reader on an emotional and satisfying adventure along with its characters. The absolute best and worst of people are illustrated within the pages as Marian and Gilbert work together to learn who is behind the malicious plot and decide who they can and cannot trust. At least one character proves to be more honorable than anyone expected.

If you have never read a book by this author, do yourself a favor and give one a try. I highly recommend Relying on the Enemy.

I love this series so, so much and couldn’t wait for the next installment, so the fact that I devoured this novel in one sitting is not surprising whatsoever.

A “backwards and upside down” situation brings Gilbert Cox and Marian Ward together in the most unconventional, yet seemingly perfect way and it is a journey that is worth witnessing. The mysterious air that has been ever present throughout this series continues in this volume and I ate it up. It adds the perfect amount of tension and mystery that keeps you guessing, as well as is highly entertaining.

Gil and Marian are true partners in every sense of the word and is something every relationship should aspire to be. I loved every scene with them together and the girls were the sweet little cherries on top. Nettie and Essie are absolutely precious and bring back warm memories of my sister and me when we were younger. Good times.

I loved getting updates on past characters in the series and seeing where they have ended up. It was in reading these particular scenes that I realized just how truly invested I am in this series. Crow’s Nest has become a part of my literary family, and I am so proud to claim it. This series has such richness and deep character connections that it’s hard not fall in love, and how Gil and Marian melded so perfectly together is a mystery that was beautiful to behold from cover to cover.

I have been thoroughly enjoying this series. It is one of those series that you need to read the books in order. So do know that this is book four and you really should read books one through three first.

Danger and romance are together in this novel. It’s fast-paced and you won’t want to miss a word!

It’s a marriage of convenience like you’ve never seen before. I loved this book! You will too I’m sure. The author is amazing as she keeps the books flowing and the characters reach out and grab you!

Bonus points to the author for bringing Anne of Green Gables into the mix. If you’re a fan of that series you’re going to love the little blurb about it too.

Gil or Gilbert is off trying to make amends to all the people his father swindled. He’s nothing like his father though. And when he offers to marry one of the people who was conned things get fun! Or well, they get interesting and I fully enjoyed reading about them and their problems and everything else that goes on.

I was so happy to hear another book in this series was coming out. I love this series, Harbored in Crow's Nest, and this book, Relying on the Enemy, is no exception. The story takes place in Wisconsin during the historically cold winter of 1931. Marian and Gilbert, the main characters, are people who try to do what is right in God's teachings amid the struggles they face. Life is not easy and challenges and threats from others invade their happiness. But their grit, strength, determination, resilience, caring and faith are what guide them in their decision making.

The author infuses the story with a lot of historical facts about how people lived in 1931 and that also adds to the depth of the characters. I can't wait for the next book in the series. I know it will be another one that will be hard to put down.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author and gladly give my honest review.

This is the fourth book in the Harbored in Crow’s Nest. It's a really enjoyable suspense romantic story. I enjoyed reading about the characters. It's well written and has a good storyline.
It's a page turner and kept my interest throughout the story. It can be read as a standalone but I would read the first three books.

Marian and Gilbert, a relationship of convenience brings these two people together.

Marian looking for job at a time when a job is hard to come. But she needs to provide for her little girls and mother in law. Gilbert, trying to make amends with the people his father hurt are pushed together when a threat arrives to hurt Marian's family. And Gilbert has a threat of his own, losing his job. But as things escalate and they both find that this plan they have decided on can be the only thing to save them both. With threats and wanting to know who is behind them, this story will tug at your hearts strings and pull you in within each page. Wonderful characters, strong and confident in God's love will have you reading until late night.

Author Danielle has crafted this heart story of love, faith, family and redemption. As a mother will do anything for her children and the man she grows to love. You'll love the people of Crow's Nest.

I received an arc from the author all stated here are my own. No positive comment was required.

I thought this was a good marriage of convenience story. I have enjoyed reading the other books in this series and loved getting to see characters from the previous books and seeing where their lives are now. I liked how we got to see Marian fall in love again and with someone that we didn’t expect. I loved how kind Gilbert was and that he is the complete opposite of his father. I loved how situations worked out to bring Marian and Gilbert together. I also loved that they learned to lean on each other as they dealt with the threats against Marian. I loved seeing their relationship grow. I also loved seeing the community rally around them and support them. I thought this was a good story with great characters.

I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors.  A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.

So far he had managed to provide food, clothing and electricity, but his promise to protect….it weighed on him.

1931 in Crow’s Nest, WI was not a time to easily find a job, as Marian was finding out. How was she to take care of her girls and her mother in law with no income? When the son of the man who devastated her family’s financial future arrives to make restitution by marrying him, is this what God wants her to do?

Threats on one’s life and the life of your loved ones can make even the supposed enemy seem worth trusting. Will they finally figure out who is threatening Marian’s life before it is too late?

An early copy of Harbored in Crow’s Nest #3 was received through Hearth Spot Press. These thoughts are my own and were in no way solicited.

I love the continuation of characters through this historical romance series. I anticipate seeing the HEAs for characters we’ve seen in this book too. As we follow a widowed single mom, with two lovely daughters - who like Anne of Green Gables - and her struggle to provide for her family, we are quickly drawn into a web of danger and suspense. Questions abound as this marriage of convenience is officiated abruptly and without delay. I was completely surprised with the outcome. I loved how this book lends to the overarching series and pulls things from all three of the previous books, characters, events, and locations. I’m excited to see what comes next, both in Wisconsin and Montana.

I received an ARC of this book via #JustReadTours and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

I picked up Relying on the Enemy because I've read the other books in this series and loved them all. I was not disappointed. It has so many elements in this story that I don't know where to begin except to say that I was so engrossed with the story that it was hard to put down. I instantly connected with both Marian and Gilbert. Marian caring for her mother-in-law and worried about her family. Not knowing how she would survive and provide for them. Then God sends an angel of sorts (in my eyes) to rescue the family and provide Gilbert with a way to ease the guilt from his father's sins. It was a marriage of convenience for both of them, but ended up so much more. I'm really looking forward to the next book in the Harbored in Crow's Nest series, but in the mean time I might end up reading about Marian, Gilbert, and the cute little girls again. It was just that good and provided all the feels. Plus a great epilogue too! Yay! I was given a copy, but all opinions are my very own.

I admit that I have a weakness for the marriage of convenience trope so I enjoyed reading this book. I also really enjoyed the author’s historical note at the end, so be sure you read that if you pick this up. Historical fiction is such a fun genre because you can learn while you read.

Violence-wise, there isn’t anything drastic in my mind. You see some guns, some fist use, and a kidnapping, but it feels pretty mild. After all, we know there is a happily ever after. : )

Romance-wise, it’s definitely more clean than not. It’s too warm for me to suggest to someone unmarried, but I’m just pretty strict about that; there isn’t anything racy or spicy. It mostly describes feelings of warmth and a couple of thoughts that trail off. Anything we see on scene is super clean. Because it’s a bit more than I prefer, this is where the four stars come in.

While I received an Advanced Copy of this book, I was not even requested to write a review so these thoughts and opinions are completely my own.

I very much enjoyed reading this story. I found Gilbert to be a very endearing character and Marian was an excellent example of motherhood. This is not an era I know much about, but Danielle did a wonderful job creating a believable setting and a full cast of colorful characters. It is the first book I’ve read in the series, but I would definitely be curious to read others.
