i thought Wait For Me After School would be one of those easygoing reads—you know, school uniforms, light romance, some blushing, maybe a dramatic umbrella scene. and yeah it was all that. this story is surprisingly chill and comforting in the best way. it’s soft, low-drama, and full of genuine warmth. i was prepared for cute crushes and classroom antics, not a full-on reflection on youth and how weirdly meaningful all those dumb little moments were—cutting class, getting scolded, late-night exam stress, and friendships that felt like they’d last forever.

honestly the plot was practically screaming at me from the moment Yu Fan’s dad showed up as the classic absentee, abusive father, and Chen Jingshen’s mom made her grand entrance as the manipulative control freak, but hey it’s not some plot-twisty danmei in the first place. i came in for the romance, not the emotional depth, but even the heavier parts didn’t feel out of place. i kept putting off the last few chapters like finishing the book would actually erase the characters from existence.

Chen Jingshen got that cold, perfect, untouchable ML trope, but honestly he’s still cute enough to make it work. Yu Fan, on the other hand going from a disorganized mess to slowly tidying up his life because he wants to impress CJS is like watching a schoolgirl crush unfold and so adorable :3

things definitely picked up once they got together tho. that’s when the family drama really kicks in. Yu Fan had his dad under control for most of the story, but of course, he found Yu fan’s weak spot eventually. personally, i think the whole departure thing was a little extra, but hey it worked for the plot. also CJS going full alone and devastated mode like lil bro was literally stalking Yu Fan showing up at his apartment, crying outside the door, asking neighbors if they’ve seen him, and casually checking universities and entire cities like he's on some tragic love scavenger hunt. it’s honestly so over the top, but it’s also oddly endearing like CJS my dude you’ve reached next-level levels of cringe you corny mf!!!

CJS’s complete refusal to acknowledge that Yu Fan’s departure was, you know, actually a breakup like lil bro was so committed to the idea that they were still together that he just casually told everyone he had a boyfriend. like CJS you corny hopeless romantic yearning final boss you’ve spent the last few years treating this as a long-distance relationship with zero doubts that it was still on😭😭 that's next-level delusion but either way, he's that rare breed of guy who’s got that much faith in a relationship.

this was a surprisingly refreshing take on high school love—the kind that doesn’t just focus on who’s blushing at who. not because it’s perfect, but because everything’s happening for the first time—first real friendships, first love, first heartbreak, first time pretending a bathroom break lasted 40 minutes so you could skip math. the way the characters bonded made me nostalgic, and maybe a little jealous. like where was my wholesome coming-of-age friend group with perfect emotional timing?😤

wfmas is life altering i am a changed person.

no seriously, i cannot even begin to put into words just how much i adored this book. it was everything i love in modern danmei & more. not only do yu fan and chen jingshen own my heart but their whole entire friend group is absolutely precious and hilarious

but fair warning: the angst? yeah. when i say the angst tore open my chest i’m not even exaggerating 😭 but it was worth it in the end because jiang zi bei is a mastermind at weaving fluff, angst, and comedy together.

i’m just going to go ahead and say it: it’s going to be very hard for anything else to top wfmas this year. shouldn’t started out my 2024 with such a banger of a danmei because how can anything even come close to beating that????

alllsoooo. the sapphic side cp. i’m feral over the breadcrumbs that were given. WHERE is our full novel of them?? tick tock where is my baihe slowburn friends to lovers novel jiang zi bei 😤

As someone who does not typically read or seek out school danmei, somehow I’ve read three in one month and all were 5 stars. I would say to anyone who love this novel, you absolutely MUST read Sa Ye. I thought it was going to be a sweet, easy slice of life with a bit of angst but I found myself crying in the break room at work 😭

There is not much plot but the characters more than make up for it. There’s also a nice amount of humor but when the angst hits, have tissues if you are a crier like me.

Characters
Yu Fan: “delinquent”, cranky gremlin with a soft heart, blushes easily, doesn’t know or understand his own feelings, doesn’t feel worthy of being loved because of a wretched home life. HE’S MY FAVORITE.

Chen Jingshen: top student, crushing hard, devoted, persistent AF, has money but a shitty home life, appears cold and indifferent but is so kind

Loved:
💜Yu Fan and his blushing
💜Yu Fan’s constant verbal daggers having so little impact on Chen Jingshen
💜Yu Fan being rough on the outside but giving in to Chen Jingshen
💜Yu Fan’s saltiness and “false” fierceness
💜The friend group- nosey AF but supportive

Maybe a spoiler:
I’m still not over the SIX YEAR time jump. It breaks my heart into pieces knowing they were apart and hurting for so long. So thankful for a forever happy ending for them🥰

(4.5 rating -> rounded up)

THIS WAS SOOOOOO CUTE. i was literally reading this with a huge smile on my face 90% of the time. literally a perfect high school (for the most part...) romance.

the two main characters were really likeable and i especially like yu fan and his slightly unique and refreshing personality. the side characters of their friend group and their teachers were really nice as well and there were a bunch of heartwarming and funny moments with them. unfortunately, i wasn’t particularly obsessed with the characters as i can tend to be for danmei which detracted from my experience - i don’t know if this makes sense but although they were likeable and great, they weren’t compelling enough for me to count this as a perfect read or a favourite.

this was honestly just pure romance with no overarching plot which was completely fine! the romance before they got together was so flipping cute and actually immaculate. i smiled and laughed so much when reading it. there was a slight lull for me after they got together and after they got back together.. again, but, that wasn’t a huge thing. also, the last chapter of this was PERFECT and so amazing, truly the best way that this could’ve ever been ended and perfectly written. the family dynamics of the two main characters were saddening and i enjoyed (in a masochistic way) reading about it. another thing is that the angst was good but it didn’t “angst” heavily as i thought it would.. yet, it was good. this is just me having huge expectations that weren’t fully meet. nonetheless, really cute and funny and the two main characters were #yearning and #fluff bosses.

I can’t recommend this novel enough. Whether you’re looking for softness, healing, angst, or just a beautifully told relationship between two boys who grow into love this is it.
It has been so long since a story made me feel this soft, this full, and this alive. I started Wait For Me After School with no expectations, just wanting something short and different, and it ended up feeling like I had lived another life inside it.

This is the kind of romance that makes you ache in the best way. It is about two boys, Yu Fan and Chen Jingshen, stumbling their way through high school, figuring themselves out, and slowly learning how to love and be loved. It is quiet, real, and intimate, the kind of story you do not just read but live through.

This book reminded me what it is like to be young and in love, surrounded by friends who make the world feel big and safe. I have never had a romance like Yu Fan and Chen Jingshen’s, or a friend group like theirs, but I lived through them in these pages.

Reading this made me feel like I was back in school, like I had that messy, silly, dumb, loyal, ride or die group of friends who would sacrifice everything for each other. They tease, meddle, and make everything chaotic. I never had a romance like theirs in my own school life, but I felt like I was there with them, living through their youth, laughing with them, aching with them.

Yu Fan

(him blushing is my most fav part of this book)

A delinquent with sharp edges and a heart that blushes too easily. He is cranky, stubborn, and does not understand his own feelings, but beneath it all he is soft, loyal, and deeply worthy of love, even if he does not believe it himself. How he acts tough but melts for Chen Jingshen anyway. His false fierceness and salty attitude.

♡ The way he receives Chen Jingshen’s quiet care without words, like that wedding coat scene six years later when Chen handed him the coat and Yu Fan accepted it with no talking, just an exchange that said everything

Chen Jingshen

From dayy oneee

The top student who seems calm and collected but is hopelessly in love. He is persistent, devoted, and quietly kind, even while hiding his own painful family life. That quiet devotion still makes my heart swell.

I just lovee him ultra delusional man (after 6 years he ask “do you want to break up with me” like bruh he's soo me the delusion level)

Scenes That Live Rent-Free in My Heart

💌 The Wedding Coat Scene — Six years apart, reunited at a wedding. No words. Chen hands Yu Fan his coat, Yu Fan accepts. The air between them heavy with everything they’re not saying.
💌 The High School Confession“Let’s date, I won’t hit you.” Aahhh.
💌 Theme Park Date — The photograph, the white shadow, the doberman plushie… pure sweetness.
💌 Birthday Scene — One on the balcony, one downstairs, looking at each other while talking on the phone.
💌 Time Skip — Six years apart, both hurting quietly. Justice when they finally meet again.
💌 The Reunion“I have a boyfriend, we’ve been together for six years.” Heart-shattering and heart-healing all at once.
💌 The Friends Finding Out — Six years later, they finally know and it’s joyful, not tragic.
💌 Those kisses 😭 like youth's first time — not enough, everything new, exciting with a mix of fear of being exposed. Secret romance, meeting, kissing. Just love those moments and will forever cherish them.

I do wish we had more about the side characters.

I love when Yu Fan asked Chen Jingshen “do you pity me?”

And CJS just said “No, I love you.”

i think it’s been quite a long time since i read a book that made me as happy as this book has made me, i wish i was exaggerating.
i got into wfmas with no expectations, just wanting to read something shorter and different to what i’m used to, and it ended up being a life changing experience.

i think one of the reasons why i’ve enjoyed this novel so much is because it’s such a beautiful love story between two boys in high school who are discovering themselves and experiencing their first times in a relationship together. throughout this story i’ve been able to relate to both yu fan and chen jingshen so deeply that it has been a complete rollercoaster of emotions. that’s definitely another reason why i enjoyed reading this novel so much, the fact that i was able to deeply connect with the mc and the ml by relating to so many of the things they went through and how their feelings were portrayed. i could really talk about these two and the bond they share for a lifetime. oh to have had a highschool love like theirs, my heart warms up just by thinking about it.

i can only recommend this novel to absolutely everyone, no matter what your preferences are. i also thought at one point that this would probably not be my cup of tea and here i am. so if you want to read a fluffy relationship that will make you curl in your bed giggling do not think about it twice. there’s so many more things i could say and i’m extremely sad that i can’t keep reading wfmas every day as a part of my routine. i’ll probably reread this in the future and give other modern danmeis a chance from now on, though i’m not sure if anything will be able to top wfmas.

Definitely one of the best school danmei out there! Absolutely worth reading, especially if you want to start approaching this genre without the fear of getting into a story that is too dramatic or too light since here everything is balanced perfectly and there's never a moment of boredom. Go read it!

This is certainly one of the best slice of life I’ve read so far. It could not be a masterpiece, but it’s a novel whose themes, main characters and their relationship with each other and side ones are portrayed in a more realistic and awesome way than I thought!

First of all, this is an extremely refreshing story set in modern times and it follows the daily life of Yu fan (MC), who deals with exams and schools regardless of his familiar problems, and Chen Jingshen (ML), who at first seems to be really quiet and maybe annoying too (not to me, honestly, i love him), their own gradual growth and development of the relationship between them and the other characters.

Although the side characters are not so much explored (which is a point I didn’t expect to find in this novel, sadly. But they remain hilarious and their relationship with the main characters is really really beautiful, i love my sillies), the main ones are so relatable and interesting and we get to know new sides of them ‘till the very end and also their backgrounds as the story proceeds. The main character, Yu fan, is maybe the one i got more fond of (he deserves many hugs<333) and I’m really relieved he found such a wholesome person like Chen Jingshen. I dare say Yu Fan is a 360º round characters, whose psychology and attitude were so well-built I empathized with him almost immediately and I loved this aspect of the story.
We became aware of their growth and see how far they went during the flowing of the entire story+his relationship with his father is built really well and show the complexity of being treated as nothing or even not even considered by your own father/parents.

The relationship between Chen Jingshen and his mother is also really impactful and impressive, since I loved how Chen Jingshen stood firm on his ideals, morals but above all on himself and his own love towards Yu fan, despite his mother’s behavior and contrariety (the end, however, gave me a sense of redemption of her. I want to be hopeful and guess she regrets her behavior towards her own son, even though their bond can’t be sew up as she’d like: I hope she understood that a son is not a puppet and she should have let him go much earlier.). I have to say the brief interactions between them pointed out enough aspects of his character and are strongly impactful.

I feel like to say that the dialogues between the different characters feel really spontaneous and there’s nothing I found boring within this story. Also, the angst was well-written and built, even thought it didn’t last long. It’s not obvious to find it.

Speaking of the ending, it was really satisfying and warm and it’s the type of ending these two deserved after all the suffering they went through, throughout their entire lives! I love them<33

Furthermore, the writing of the story is simple but this doesn’t effect it too much. It fits, indeed, the setting and the genre of the story, it is really sliding and sets well the mostly comical atmosphere! I found that the descriptions and the style gave a sense of delicacy to the story as well.

To sum up, I would have liked to have more details about the side characters and especially know more about their relationships (the sapphicsss!!) or even the relationship between Yu fan and his mother, but it was a refreshing story I recommend to anyone loves realistic slice of life novel with a hint of angst!

The following quote is so beautiful that I found it really impactful when I read it:

“Because regardless of whether or not I am normal or abnormal, I am still human.” Chen Jingshen stated with lowered eyes, “I’m not a dog you raised.”

This is one of those books that deserves to be called a masterpiece. Whether you enjoyed it or not, you must admit that it was beautifully written with deep messages and characters so humanly real it hurts to read.

What to expect:
📍Coming of age
📍Slice of life
📍Highschool romance arc
📍Mature romance
📍Complicated family relationships
📍Abusive/controlling parents
📍Hurt-comfort
📍Time skip

The story in itself was nothing complicated or overly interesting, but the way it was told transformed it into the masterpiece that it is. The first arc about highschool life, teenage dreams, firsts love and self discovery was slow-paced with a nostalgic and youthful feeling to it. Every character was well-fleshed, their motivations clear, and some still carried the stereotypes of the genre (the delinquent, the funny or the studious type) but there was a real human personality behind, so you can relate to them and maybe remember your school years. After the time skip things changed and adult live was the protagonist, jobs, relationships, social interactions, planning for the future and family matters made the rhythm of the story more mature. It was a smooth and logical progression. It felt necessary and everything was leading to this, so I have no comments regarding that time skip and momentary separation of the couple.

Speaking of which, both MCs were the best part of the book. If the setting and side characters were amazing, you can imagine how mind-blowing these two characters were. I feel like I know them and they are part of my life now 😭. That also explains why I suffered so much with everything that happened to them. Their shitty parents and unfair situation was so frustrating to read. And that's the main point of the novel: life's unfair and unpredictable, the right family does not always share your blood, and dreams are hard to achieve and might change along the way, regardless of this you need to keep living and pursue your own happiness (and maybe learn from our MC and accept help when you need it!!).

I can't put into words how much I liked this couple. They simply made sense! They fit in each other's lives no matter how different their personalities, backgrounds, and life experiences were. There was communication, they respected the other, they were always there to help when it mattered, and they never tried to change the other and instead made the effort to change themselves and looked for common ground, they were just perfect together 😭. My flawed babies with awful parents that needed to grow up too soon and sacrificed so much, and still loved each other through years of separation...They deserved that hard-earned happy ending 🫠.

PS: I love this author and some of their books are top favorites, but this one was on another level. It'll be hard to find another contemporary romance as good as this 😌.

I'm not usually the type of person who would read a lot of slice of life and coming of age stories, but I make exceptions now and then (especially after a very heavy story).

I've been meaning to join the WFMAS fanclub but I was late to the party, heh.

I wanted to read it so long ago but I got scared especially because I knew it was a slice of life and I was worried that I'll get bored. However, this is Jiang Zi Bei, I should've known that they'd never disappoint me (or at least, they didn't yet).

Yu Fan (my son) and Chen Jingshen (my son-in-law) were adorable together. The story itself is very simple, but the way it was written really made you attach yourself to the character and grow to love them. I felt as if I was part of this group of misfits that skipped classes, smoked at school, didn't pay attention but loved each other and had each other's back unconditionally.

What else can I say? This deserves the hype it gets and I am now a fan as well. If you're looking for something (mostly) light-hearted with high school antics and an adorable romance, this is for you.

If I had to nitpick, the rereadability of this is quite low since it wasn't very eventful in the first place, but not many people care about that.

This time it's a 5* from me.

This was a joy to read and I definitely didn’t see that coming. I’ve grown so wary of YA books, especially set in high school but Wait For Me After School thankfully hit all my buttons.

The book was hilarious from the start and I just loved Yu Fan‘s pov. He was his class‘ wastrel who didn’t shy away from any conflict or fight but slept away during his lessons who then got so flustered by Chen Jingshen. Also, Chen Jingshen with no regard to loosing face who played dirty in the most charming ways. They were such cuties together.

I had a bit of a hard time two thirds through because everything seemed to be too good to be true and - of course - it had to go downhill from there. The anticipation of bad things going to happen was worse than when they were actually happening.

But the last third of the book was one brilliant ride and I loved that we got to see them a bit more mature and yet they both were still so them (guess this only makes sense when you read the book).

A highlight for me was the class group chat. I’m a sucker for social media interactions in stories and it was brilliantly done here. I also loved that their class mates were so oblivious. I mean, usually one of the MCs is the oblivious one but here this trope was used brilliantly and in a fun way.

I was really sad when the last extra ended and I’ll be definitely rereading this story.

This is probably one of my favorite reads of 2023. I do seem to say that about most of my reads though lol.

There was something about this novel that has me loving it so much, the way each character was written had me growing so attached. Watching as the main couple love grows, how they interact and help each other become a better person. Most would say that The way each character was written, and their backstory was beautiful and so realistic in a way- I think that’s why it’s become one of my favorite reads this year. It’s starts off very light and sweet, the sweetness of two people falling in love only to be hit by reality.

I went into this book thinking it was a very lighthearted cute school romance, only for me to get hit by the unexpected angst. It was a reminder that I should read the tags before I start reading something new lol. But I don’t regret it, since we do have a happy ending.

I also loved their high school teacher & their friend group, they were all such cute characters who cared so much about both of them (especially YF)

I just finished reading Wait For Me After School and it was a bomb. I enjoyed it so much! My favorite danmei author, Jiang Zi Bei, definitely did not disappoint. In fact, she did more than what I have expected. Jiang Zi Bei's works mostly lean more for young adults, hilarious and entertaining; which was why the angst hit me like a tsunami. My heart felt tight and suffocated. I couldn't stop tearing up. It was so emotionally written, it felt so real. So far, the best of her works that I have read. No doubt better than ICDI in my opinion. Even the extras were great! The ending for both the main story and the extras was so satisfying. There's nothing more that I could ask for! Totally recommend giving this a read! ♥️
