To Hunt a Ruby Remedy

Rate this book
The man who opened this cottage door is hiding more than big teeth. Not even a journey to the Drakona Forest will stop Scarlette from getting the magical cure her mother needs. But when the door to the healer’s cottage opens, she doesn’t find the grandmother she expected. The man on the other side is scowling, curt, and smoking hot. He also wants Scarlette gone. Now.

Ranulf prefers his solitude, especially with a dragon-hunter roaming his woods. The last thing he needs is a distractingly attractive woman under his roof. She doesn’t belong in his isolated world, even if resisting her sunny smiles (and delicious pies) is proving harder than Ranulf expected.

When the huntsman sets his sights on Scarlette, Ranulf can no longer hide his secrets. He can protect Scarlette – but how will he survive the heartbreak of sending her away? *** A Little Red Riding Hood retelling with a grumpy dragon-shifter, steamy romance, and a happily ever after. ***

Jen Lynning never outgrew her love of fairy tales. (She may have studied German just so she could read the Brothers Grimm in the original.) When she wasn’t reading about life in a magical world, she was imagining it. Eventually she decided to start writing her own stories where magic and romance meet.

Jen lives in Northern Virginia with her two cats, who make their own contributions to her writing by walking across the keyboard, and her bird, who offers commentary on the whole process.

This was a cute short novella that was a retelling of the "Red Ridding Hood". I really enjoyed reading the world the author created and I was happy with the relationship between Ranulf and Scarlette. We also had some spicy scenes, which were perfect for the novella.

I will definitely read the other books from the "Bound by Flame" series.

Review: To Hunt a Ruby Remedy by Jen Lynning
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I was fortunate in receiving an e-ARC copy of this book by Jen Lynning, in exchange for an honest review.

This is my first time reading anything by Jen and I wasn’t sure what to expect. The book, promising dragon shifter, magic and a little red riding hood retelling sounded like a fun read and that was exactly what it was.

I have LOVED reading this story. The MFC is instantly likeable. Her worry over her mother and her need to repay the kindness of others leaves you with no doubt that Scarlette is a kind, compassionate person who deserves to find happiness. Finding it in an unexpected, grumpy, dragon shifter was probably not what she had in mind but was absolutely a match made in heaven. It was refreshing to have the MMC not be the typical sweet talking, hunky man who everyone swoons over. Ranulf had a genuine sense of kindness despite his exterior manor showing otherwise. Watching his feelings develop along with his understanding and acceptance of them was heartwarming. I was not expecting the ending that happened but I did find it funny. I absolutely need more from this pair. I feel their journey has only just begun. 💕

I really enjoyed this novella and can’t wait to read more. Thanks so much for the opportunity to read To Hunt a Ruby Remedy.

I'm always impressed by how much story Lynning packs into a novella--there was a lot going on, but for the most part the story didn't feel rushed. The antagonist felt a little less than fully fleshed out, but Scarlette and Ranulf were lovely and I enjoyed watching their relationship develop. (And how quickly miscommunications were put to rest!) I'm looking forward to reading other stories in this world (definitely need one about Ranulf's sister!).

This is my favorite novella in the bound by flame series so far! There are shifters, mage healers and a FMC that is determined to help everyone around her. In this Romantasy the FMC Scarlett sets out find a way to save her mother and along the way also finds herself in the middle of a hunter and his prey.

"It didn't matter that I had left my heart back in that field with Scarlette; I hadn't been using it before she appeared on my doorstep either."

This was such a sweet little novella! Grumpy x sunshine is one of my favorite tropes, so I loved to see it here.

Scarlette is a ray of sunshine seeking a cure for her ill mother from reclusive grump Ranulf who has closed himself off to avoid getting hurt. He can't resist her natural charms, and his walls quickly crumble under her good-natured questioning. Given that this is a novella the romance develops pretty quickly, but they meshed together so well that I didn't mind at all. They felt like they belonged together.

The wider plot was also engaging. The healers of this realm can shapeshift, with Ranulf having the ability to become a dragon. This closely guarded secret is threatened by the arrival of a dragon hunter who has heard reports of a dragon in the area. Scarlette and Ranulf team up to fend him off, and their secreting around is really exciting!

This was a fun, quick read perfect for grumpy x sunshine lovers who want just a little taste of excitement with their romance.

Very quickly, we find out Ranulf is a dragon shifter and a hunter is looking for him. Even with the stakes now raised, the world building and Scarlette and Ranulf's relationship parts of the story never suffered.

The author was able to juggle all three pieces of the story and created a cozy little world where there just happened to be a dragon hunter on the loose.

I really enjoyed it!

This novella had me hooked from the very beginning. A little red riding hood retelling where the wolf is actually a dragon shifter.

The story was well written and there was great chemistry between the MCs. I really enjoyed this version of the tale and found Ranulf and Scarlette’s characters very lovable. The surprise Gideon got was the best!

I was excited to find out there will be three more fairy tale retellings set in this world coming out this summer. I’ll definitely be reading them all.

In "To Hunt a Ruby Remedy," the sixth installment of A Bound by Flame series, Jen Lynning takes us on an enchanting twist through a beloved fairy tale. This Little Red Riding Hood retelling introduces us to Scarlette, a determined and bright young woman embarking on a perilous journey to Drakona Forest in search of a magical cure for her ailing mother. However, upon reaching her destination—a secluded healer’s cottage—Scarlette is met not by the grandmotherly figure she expected, but by Ranulf, a surly, reclusive dragon-shifter with secrets as deep as the woods themselves.

Ranulf, preferring solitude and battling his own demons, is caught off guard by Scarlette’s arrival. His initial reaction is cold; he wants her gone, fearing the complications her presence could bring, especially with a relentless dragon-hunter prowling nearby. Yet, Scarlette’s relentless optimism and her culinary skills, which bring delicious pies to his table, begin to melt the frosty barriers around Ranulf's heart.

The tension in "To Hunt a Ruby Remedy" is beautifully crafted, interweaving the immediate danger posed by the dragon-hunter with the emotional turmoil of burgeoning, forbidden love. Lynning does a masterful job of building suspense and chemistry between Scarlette and Ranulf, making their interactions a heart-pounding read. As danger looms closer, Ranulf’s secret nature as a dragon-shifter becomes a pivotal element, adding depth and intrigue to the narrative.

What I particularly enjoyed about this novel was its rich, atmospheric setting and the deep, personal stakes involved. The characters are well-developed, and their motivations are both clear and compelling. The story not only delivers on the promise of steamy romance but also offers a thrilling adventure and a thoughtful exploration of love, sacrifice, and belonging.

Jen Lynning’s retelling is a delightful, captivating read. It’s perfect for fans of fantasy romance looking for strong, charismatic characters and a happily ever after that feels both earned and magical. "To Hunt a Ruby Remedy" is a testament to Lynning’s ability to weave familiar folklore into fresh, engaging narratives that resonate with modern readers. I thoroughly enjoyed every page and found myself rooting for Scarlette and Ranulf against all odds. A truly enchanting addition to the A Bound by Flame series!

Scarlette used every penny to pay healers to tend to her mom's tumor. But the treatment fails and a young healer sends her to visit her grandmother who could craft her mom a powerful charm. However, when Scarlette reaches the cottage, she is "greeted" by a grumpy dragon-shifter who promises to make the amulet if she leaves him alone. Naturally, she doesn't. She lives in his small cottage while he makes her the charm, and bakes as a form of payment.
They both find themselves in danger as a dragon-hunter enters the forest. Will their growing affection help them protect their secret, or will it doom them both?

This was a nice cozy quick-ish read. I loved that there was no relationship drama and I liked the setting and characters. I don't usually mind insta-lust/love but there was too much of a huge jump for me and ruined the ending.

To Hunt a Ruby Remedy is a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood, except for a wolf, you have a dragon. Scarlette needs a magical charm to save her mother from dying. She is sent to a cottage in a forest far from her home, where she meets Ranulf. I won't give away more of the plot, so you just have to read the novella 😉

It never ceases to amaze me, when authors can world build in less than 50 pages. By this point we already knew it had a sort of medieval German inspired vibe with magical elements. Jen also manages to explain her magic system, while not groundbreaking, she certainly put a lot of effort into disguising charms from enchantments, more than most might have for a novella. I as a reader, really appreciated this 👍

There were very heartfelt moments, that brought a tear to my eye. I especially loved the first kiss scene, it was so sweet. Never knew that "Can I kiss you now?" could be so cute and hot at the same time. It's one of the best Little Red Riding Hood retellings, I've read and I love that it's not predatory as it often is written.

Sometimes with novellas pacing can be tough for authors, I never hold it against them. But I feel Jen really perfected the pacing here, it felt like a complete story, without being rushed or contrived. And yet it felt like I read a full length novel.

Thank you Jen for having character art commissioned, this really made me connect with Scarlette and Ranulf so much more.

To Hunt a Ruby Remedy is only 171 pages but the story quality is one of 300 page book easily! 🤩
I initially told myself "I'm just reading the first chapters to see the mood" and ended up never putting it down until it was finished. 😂

It's a loose retelling of Little Red Riding Hood with the wolf being a dragon shifter and here the hunter is the villain they'll need to face 🔥

1000% recommend, this is a cozy yet angsty fantasy with all the feels and a little smut and the characters are absolute sweethearts!(Each in their own way with the MMC being a big grump uncomfortable with words and people, and she's a big sunshine that can't help but talk and ask questions 😂).

It didn’t matter that I had left my heart back in that field with Scarlette; I hadn’t been using it before she appeared on my doorstep either.

-To Hunt a Rudy Remedy, Jen Lynning

☆☆☆☆

To Hunt a Ruby Red is a cute little novella in a series of novellas all about dragons. It makes for a quick read, and it is worth it. It's a spoof of the classic fairytale Little Red Riding Hood, but the big bad wolf is an isolated healer and a dragon shifter. I was fortunate enough to receive an e-ARC from Jen in exchange for an honest review.
This is a cute little read for someone wanting something sweet and short. It is a nice mix of fantasy and romance with a touch of spice. There are some great tropes like Grumpy x Sunshine, Only One Bed and A Red Riding Retelling.
It follows Scarlette and Ranulf, and we get to see their POVs as they switch between chapters. I liked the characters, but they felt a little flat. Because of the novella's length, we couldn't dive into them fully, which is one of my favourite parts about reading new characters. For what they were, they were well done. Scarlette was the sunshine to cloudy Ranulf. They paired nicely together while being able to stand on their own two feet. I was rooting for them to get together. Ranulf is a refreshing character in a fantasy world that is overrun by hulking men whom everyone swoons over. He is a loner who is caring and kind, though he does not anyone to know.
This world had a very interesting magic system, something we hadn't seen from Jen before. This magic system focused on the land's intrinsic healing magic compared to the incubus/succubus magic system we have seen before. I enjoyed this magic system, though at times, it was a little complicated, and I had to reread sections. Another fun part of this magic system is the shifting! Unlike the Big Bad Wolf, Ranulf shifts into a dragon! I loved that the Little Red Riding Hood story had a new, fresh twist.
I found the love story a little cheesy, but a little cheese is fine for romance. I'm personally a fan of slow-burn while this relationship moved at a quick pace. I loved the dynamic between the two, and they complemented each other nicely. There was also some nice spice to top it off. Seeing these two characters open up to each other and themselves was heartwarming.
For something short and sweet, this is a great read. It is great for someone looking to get a taste of fantasy and romance without an overly complicated fantasical world. It has a little bit of everything romance, witty banter, a sunshine FMC paired with a broody MMC who is only soft with her and some magic. I really enjoyed this novella and I hope we get to see more of this couple and this world from Jen. Again huge thanks for an ARC!

“It didn’t matter that I had left my heart back in that field with Scarlette; I hadn’t been using it before she appeared on my doorstep either.”

Omg this book was such a sweet grumpy/sunshine romance! This was my first ever read from Jen Lynning and I will definitely be reading more from this author after this amazing story! I absolutely adored this story, it was short but perfectly balanced! And honestly I loved Scarlette and Ranulf from page one! Their banter was hilarious, their romance swoon-worthy, and the plot filled with everything I want in a romantasy book! I don’t want to give too much away though as this is a novella! What I will say is that To Hunt a Ruby Remedy had a little bit of everything… romance, spice, banter for days, a sunshiny FMC who loves to bake and care for those around her, a grumpy MMC who cares for very few people but is soft for only those few, found family, dragons and a villain who is going to run head first into karmic justice.

HAPPY READING 📖

Little Red Riding Hood, but make it a dragon shifter novella. This was so good!

Scarlette travels to Grandmother Molle's cottage to acquire a cure for her mother's ailment, only to encounter her grandson, Ranulf, there instead. While he is also a healer, he is rather grumpy and solitary, and although he accepts to work on the remedy, he is eager to get rid of Scarlette, as he considers her too much of a distraction. But when the arrival of a dragon-hunter puts her at risk, he doesn't hesitate to reveal his secret in order to protect her, even if it means having to let her go.

It was my first book by Jen Lynning and I enjoyed it so much. I think the magical system was interesting and I'm excited that there will be more books set in this world.
The story was sweet and the characters worked great together in perfect grumpy-sunshine fashion.
I did not expect that ending with the Huntsman predicament but I think it was rather fitting (and funny).

Thank you to the author for the advanced reader copy. All opinions are my own.

4.75 rounded up. This is yet another beautiful novella in the Bound by Flame collection and a red riding hood retelling! I’ve never read a fairy tale retelling (as far as I’m aware), but I absolutely loved this! Scarlette is a bright, bubbly woman who cares for everyone and can’t help but talk. Ranulf is a grumbly, secluded, quiet, healer who shifts into a dragon.

I loved seeing Ranulf’s layers and character unravel around Scarlette and how her bright talkative nature brought out so much in him. The perfect grumpy/sunshine combo and I loved the cutesy little village and characters that they encounter. The magic and history of the healers and node use for the magic was incredibly detailed, rich, and felt so original while being easy to digest and done wonderfully in such a short read!

Also, the action of the hunter and Ranulf’s secret form was so engulfing, while the relationship built along side and the author captured the perfect slow burn and spice mixture! Absolutely loved this read and definitely will read it again! ♥️

To Hunt a Ruby Remedy
⭐⭐⭐⭐

This book is a prequel novella for the Once Upon an Enchantment series which I read this summer. It's a series of interconnected, standalone fairy tale retellings featuring people from all walks of life.

I love the magic system in this series, with magical nodes that are concentrated areas for magic tied to families by blood. The innate magical abilities can be born with are really interesting too.

To Hunt a Ruby Remedy is a take on Little Red Riding Hood, except the wolf is actually a grumpy healer named Ranulf with abandonment issues who can shapeshift into a dragon because of his healing abilities. Scarlette's mom is battling a recurring brain tumor and Ranulf's twin sister helps give her a short term treatment so Scarlette can travel to their family healing node and get a long term healing charm from Ranulf. What happens next is classic grumpy x sunshine, he falls first, and the hunter gets what he deserves. Add in a dash of open door spice and self sacrifice, and you have a pretty good book!

Scarlette has traveled far to get a healing charm for her mother, and when she arrives she's surprised to find a man about her age instead of the grandmother she expected. Ranulf prefers to be alone, away from the village and able to do his work at his leisure. He also realizes quite quickly that Scarlette may be the exception to this.

Stories of dragon sightings bring a restlessness to Ranulf, and he struggles with what to do about the dragon hunter in town, especially when he shows up at his cottage demanding a room to stay in. Scarlette of course vacates the guest room, but now that means she's up in the attic...with him.

Scarlette discovers and is unafraid of his secrets, and Ranulf realizes that he desperately wants her to stay here with him, but he can't ask her to leave her mother. When she returns home, her mother seems to think that the village in the forest may be what's best for Scarlette afterall. Watching them realize what they meant to one another was so sweet!

More than a simple rewrite of a commonly-known tale

A distinctive twist about this retelling is that Grandmother has family of her own and is not related to Scarlette. Also, I appreciate how the author employs a male healer as one of the main characters. I’m not just talking about the plot, but rather that a man is portrayed in a compassionate and restorative trade. This really stood out for me. Yet he retained his masculine protectiveness…

And it’s not only the characters the author fleshed out, the villagers and rustic life are part and parcel of the book’s persona.

Sometimes, we may prefer to hide in the shadows rather than face the sunlight. When brightness enters our life, open the door to allow it in (even if only a crack at first).

Looking forward to the next three in the ‘Bound by Flame’ series as well as others by this author (next is ‘Deceiving the Cursed Beast’).

If you love fairytale retellings, you should pick To Hunt a Ruby Remedy. Its a Red Riding hood retelling with spice, magic and shifters in the mix. I like the refreshing take on shifters, which added depth to the story. Its a fast-faced, easy to follow novella focused on the growing relationship between Scarlette and Ranulf, with an intriguing side story involving a hunter. My favorite was the tension and banter between the main characters. It made for a fun read.

Thank you for the digital arc in exchange for an honest review. Everything in this review has been written willing fully.

Since I read a proof copy of the book any grammatical errors did not impact the rating.

I absolutely adored and enjoyed this little Novella! This is the 5th book in the Bound by Flame series.

It is a loose retelling of Little Red Riding Hood with a grumpy/sunshine vibe. I could not stop reading this until it was finished it was soo good! It captivates you and you just can't stop reading! It is a really cozy fantasy read. Scarlette and Ranulf go very well together. Scarlette is more of like snow white, she is very hardworking and giving, She certainly knows what she wants and always puts people first over herself.

Ranulf is a sweet little grump of a dragon with some gooey insides who is scared of being hurt. He lives in his head a lot and assumes much of the situation between him and Scarlette without talking to her, which causes miscommunication.

This novella was an incredible fun & quick read, with simple world-building & a fast paced plot. The romantic development felt a bit rushed, but it did not take away the enjoyment of the story as a whole. I loved the FMC & MMC as a couple, but also individually as characters. I loved seeing the slightly grumpy/sunshine aspect of them both & how before Scarlette walked into his life, it was rare for Ranulf to open show happiness & truly experience it. His smile a rare & beautiful thing. It made their moments that much more endearing. Scarlette overall was an easy to like heroine that you root for from beginning to end. She truly was selfless & her heart of gold shined the brightest.

I loved the twist to the dragon-shifter element in the story, mixed with the magical uniqueness of the world Jen created. This truly was a lighthearted read & I truly recommend it! ♥️

I enjoyed this story with all the characters that were within this book. The main characters were Scarlette and Ranulf.

Scarlette is on a journey to the forest of Drakona to get a magical cure for her mother. There is a healer that lives in a cottage there. When she gets to the cottage, she is expecting a grandmother. Instead, she finds a young man who looks like he is not happy to see her there.

Ranulf prefers his solitude, so when a young woman knocks on his grandmother's door, he is not happy. He decides to help her and send her on her way home. He uses his magic to turn into a dragon when he needs to go to the village around. He gets word that there is a dragon hunter around again.

This was a fun story to read. It had action, adventure, and suspense throughout. There were a few giggles within. This book is part of a series called " Bound by Flame." This was book nine in the series.

I saw this and decided to read it. This is my honest, unbiased opinion.

I've read a few of Jen Lynning's books and this jumped to my favorite! I highly recommend this fantasy novella. It's page turner that will have you binging!

Our little red, Scarlette isn't giving up easily when a grumpy healer in the woods tries to send her away. She's determined to get a charm to save her mother. If her smiles don't work, she'll try baking.
Spoiler: Both work on Ranulf. He knows she is a distraction and attempts to push her away.

But there's a dragon hunter harassing the townspeople for information and healers needed in other towns. Scarlette and Ranulf will be forced to work - and live - together.

I loved the charm-making, dragon hunting danger, the kind townspeople who look after their own, the sweet FMC who isn't afraid to pick up a crossbow, the sweet and swoony slow burn (with a bit of spice), the action, and of course the baking!

I needed a story where a problem was presented and the solution was there without all the back and forth, would they wouldn’t they make it battles. While sometimes you want that deep plot and battle, sometimes it’s a breath of fresh air to just have a plot work its way through and remind you that every love story doesn’t have to have a hard time to end happily ever after. Don’t get me wrong, Scarlette’s and Ranulf’s story had enough intrigue and moments of despair, but I loved the most about it that it reminded us that stories can be about working together and not having to find ways back to each other.

If you are looking for dragons, simple pure love, mentions of wolves, healing, dragon hunters, quick stories, quick paced, and forced proximity, this is the story for you! Scarlette, Ranulf, and Ranulf’s family will quickly fly their way into your heart, crash land, and stay forever.

This is a Little Red Riding Hood retelling. With a dragon instead of a wolf.
We meet Scarlette as she is on a journey to a healer, for a cure for her mother. Ranulf, who opens the door, isn't the grandmotherly healer she expects to find. He is grumpy and cold to her.

I liked Scarlette instantly. She is kind, compassionate person, who repays the kindness of others. She is strong and soft. I see it in her worry over her mom. Her sunny side no matter what, is what begins to melt Ranulf's frosty side.
Ranulf is a reclusive dragon-shifter. He prefers solitude, but he can't quite restist Scarlette and her optimism. Not to meantion her baking. He is not used to have to communicate his feelings, which leads to some miscommunication. I liked that he is not a smooth talker.

This story didn't feel rushed and I enjoyed the settings and the chemistry between Scarlette and Ranulf. I loved watching the relationship grow between them.
It is a nice steamy romance with adventure and love. I hope to see more of these two as it felt like the end was just cut off. I wanted to keep reading.
I enjoyed every page and this is my favorite novella in The Bound by Flame series so far.

This is a retelling of red riding hood. The world building is amazing, also the map. There are dragon shifters, dragon hunters, magic. The main characters, Scarlett and Ranulf, are both adorable. Scarlett wants to save her mother from an illness, searching for a magical cure. Ranulf is a healer and a dragon shifter. The chemistry between them is sweet and a little bit spicy. Romance, adventure and HEA.
A well written novella by Jen Lynning. I truly enjoyed it! 🫶
