D’Artaron is the kind of commanding officer every father wants for his daughter, every king wished they had, and every princess wishes he was in her security detail.
He’s tall, with broad shoulders and a handsome masculine face, with dark hair that reaches just past his chin. Honorable, brooding, and utterly unavailable as well as self-denying of pleasure, Summer Court's Commander walks around breaking hearts as if it’s his duty. It's not. His duty is to the king.
When the king hears of the coup in the Spring Court, and the power vacuum it leaves, he sends the Commander to protect the only royal left standing: the former princess, now the inexperienced Spring Queen. Excellent. Destroying evil doers and restoring order are Commander's cup of tea. Everything about the new assignment is perfect. Orderly. Predictable and in control.
Milana grew up with tales of water fairies that seduced men, vampires that seduced women, and Babaroga who'd come to take her away if she didn't eat her bean soup. She writes sci-fi fantasy romance with over-the-top heroes from her home on Earth where she lives with her mate and their three little monsters. • Safe from cheating, otherwoman drama, and with HEA every time, Milana's stories will entertain you. I started reading this book when I needed a break from Warlord by Gena Showalter and ended up enjoying it more than I thought I would, which seems to keep happening with Milana’s books. Obviously, I rented this through Kindle Unlimited.
D’Artaron is the head of the military for the summer court and manages to break many a female’s heart without really meaning to. He has taken a vow of celibacy seriously and goes as far as taking herbs from the healers during the mating season.
He is tasked by the Summer Court’s King to keep an eye on the very naive new Summer Queen after a coup kills her husband and in-laws and realizes rather quickly that the vow of celibacy will be an issue moving forward because of her.
His normal job as commander of the armies of the Summer Court is a much easier job than keeping an eye on someone he is attracted to, which is something he is finding to be his new reality with the more time they spend together.
Can he keep himself together long enough to do his job or will he fall prey to his own baser instincts and feelings for someone he knows is off limits?
Hell knows I can’t stay away from a good Milana Jacks novel. I find it harder and harder to say no when I see one and have free space in my Kindle Unlimited subscription. I knew this one would be next after finishing the one with Augusta and Aamako.
I thought I’d struggle more with Chloe being so naive but I find this trait to be quite endearing. I almost prefer her POV chapters to D’Artaron’s, which shocks me a little, even after finishing the novel. I normally prefer the male POV chapters so this was a bit of a shock for me.
I’m going back and forth on whether I’m surprised at how D’Artaron expressed his love for Chloe. I’m almost disappointed that he went back to the Summer Court but I’m glad he was able to get out of his oath in the end. It was nice to see a happy ending, for sure.
I’m so sad this is the last book in the series, especially since I’ve read the Savage Horde trilogy already. If you’re looking for something short and sweet, Milana Jacks is usually the way to go if you don’t mind smut or prefer your books with a healthier dose of smut like I do. 😉
Series overall: Never read Milana Jacks before but I got completely sucked into this series. It has some worldbuilding without getting too far into the weeds, spicy scenes, good chemistry between all the MCs, and humor just when I needed it. They all have some drama to keep things interesting and the MMCs all have a dark edge to them, which I enjoyed.
Book 4: I had been waiting for D’Artaron’s book since the beginning and he was filthier than I expected and ngl I enjoyed his kink greatly. The romance was a real slow burner and the pace was a little off but I still tore through this book like a sugared up kid whacking a piñata.
Another fun addition to the series. D’Artaron has always been an enigma everytime he has graced us with his presence in previous books so needless to say I was excited for his story.
I absolutely loved D’Artaron, and getting to climb inside his head, finally! I loved his loyal heart.
I found his interactions with Chloe quite entertaining. You couldn't have picked a more opposite personality for his mate than perhaps an Unseelie Fae tbh. Chole was all rainbows, unicorns and turned splotchy in an instant from her frequent blushes. She was the good girl, the too kind for her own good girl, that in the beginning of the story it appeared she had yet to find herself. To figure out who she was as a person. Not to mention her struggling to control her magic on top of it.
This book was essentially about Chloe's journey from being a village good girl to an unwanted princess who struggled to fit in to the eventual beloved Spring Queen.
It was quite the fun romp, tbh. Though I'll admit the middle of the story dragged for me. I felt compared to the first 30% it lost much of its momentum and interest. Thankfully by 70% it picked right back up and it finished in such a cute way, too!
That epilogue was the best. D’Artaron deserved all the happiness in the world.
Other bits I loved was D’Artaron's endless amounts of "Can I kill him yet?" moments regarding Fleur's mate Notuzza. He just had no tolerance for him and it was actually hilarious that he wouldn't let it go no matter how many times Et'enne told him no. I also loved the few moments we got to see D’Artaron and Et'enne one on one. To finally get to see an up close view of their bond and friendship was sooo nice. Because it's always been obvious how well they knew and trusted one another from the previous books.
Overall it was a fun read. I didn't like Chloe as much as I wanted but I did like her for D’Artaron, and they were super cute together.
Can't wait to see who the next book will be about.
He smiles. ‘What do you want D’Artaron?” “I want out.” “Why?” “Because the Spring queen needs me.” “Liar,” he whispers into my face, as he would to a lover. “Say it.” “No.” “Say it!” “No!” “Say it, or I swear to June, I will not release you.” “I will leave anyway.” “You wouldn’t break your oath.” “I would.” “Why?” “Because the Spring queen is mine!” I shove him. “She’s mine!” My magic lashes out and takes hold of his clothes, pinning him to the opposite wall. I can feel his magic reaching into my head and reeling back again because I’m pissed and I’m free. I am free. “I crave her more than I crave life itself. If I cannot have her, I will cease breathing. This is a matter of survival for me. I must…” “You must what?” he asks. “I must marry her.” I exhale a breath I feel like I’ve held my entire life. “I must marry her.”
I absolutely loved getting a glimpse inside the commander's head, my god...who would have thought that this absolute powerhouse of control felt so deeply! The bromance between Et'enne and D'Artaron was hilarious and that whole scene made me teary eye'd for the affection that this royal family has for him. While Chole wasn't my favorite character ever I did think she was perfect for D'Artaron and it was very rewarding seeing her grow in confidence. I wished she had been more upset by both her sister and brother-in-law. I felt they got a complete free pass for using her to better themselves and no one ever mentioned it. I'm hoping there are more books in this series. I don't want to leave this world yet!!
Nah because he made her fall in love with him while still determined to leave her, and then sabotaged all her chances at finding anyone to help her through her heat that he refused to help her through. And he selfishly wanted his last night with her before he left her for good, and stopped her from connecting with anyone + internally decides that she didn't really love him if she accepted an offer from anyone else, even though he planned to spring it on her that he was leaving in the morning and secretly maneuvered her guards and everyone around her to her own people to take his people back with him. This guy then left her for weeks to be alone and unhelped in her heat IN PAIN. He comes back when HE'S ready (weeks later), and she runs to him and takes him to bed like he didn't leave her in pain for his stupid pride.
And he has the gall to tell her this:
"...you acted like a mature queen, not a petulant, hurt girl, and you've given me much needed space to come to terms about how I feel about you..."
That's so effing manipulative.
AND he still doesn't satisfy her heat when he returns to her!!! He makes her wait until they're married, so she's just in pain, and he's fine with it because he's been celibate for like 50 years or something and the pain will teach her a lesson or something stupid like that.
I hate him.
He knew she was naive and trusting and he manipulated her.
Also, how tf am I the only one to comment on how icky his dialogue is with her especially in the few intimate scenes????

***POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD*** I devoured the Commander. Truly great read, and d'Artaron has a lot more layers and depth than I gave him credit for. He's also a lot more powerful that I thought. All good stuff, really. I also truly enjoyed following Chloe, but she's a lot easier to figure out. What you see, is pretty much what you get. To me, in this book, the lead was definitely more on the male side of the story, as opposed to the female side, like in the previous books.
It will then come as no surprise that the scene that really got me, was the one with Et'nne, when our favorite Summer King forces d'Artaron to face reality before releasing him. That got my eyes all misty. This is when you realize that for all his love of power, darkness, and selfishness, and let's be fair, Et'nne is all of those things, he's also got a big heart and he's capable of being selfless and generous, even at his own detriment. I kinda feel bad for him, losing both fleur and his best friend. 😟
I am at a loss for words on how to adequately address this amazing love story. Many times, we read books that put a fire 🔥 underneath us, but this is a roaring inferno.
I know I say this to every one of Milana's books, but this is without a shadow of a doubt her best work to date. The way she captures your heart and soul with every word, sentence, and paragraph is astounding. You are addicted from start to finish. The passion and turmoil that these two people have to endure is, without a doubt, heart-wrenching. A male, so proud and loyal, who at times is at war with himself . A female who is prepared to wait for eternity for him to realize his true fate and live the life they are supposed to share.
Grab the tissues, and get comfy because once you start reading this phenomenal, awe-inspiring story, you will not want to put it down!.
Our favorite commander with his legendary control is here… snap, snap, snap…can you hear it? I’m not sure she can handle our controlling commander. His control is legendary for a reason, and you get to see that control throughout this book. Because control is something he has in spades…he has enough control for fleets of fae, it’s legendary for a reason.
Safe read, with a sweet innocent fae female and the legendary in control celibate commander, yes they are an intoxicating combination in deed. A sweet and fun epilogue, which I loved and a hea.
3 stars I must say that I have been waiting for the Commanders book to come out. I find myself oddly, disappointed. I loved this series! However he was just a TOTAL dick this whole book-and she was a doormat. I felt the (minimal) spicy scenes were one sided, with her trying to please him to the point I felt she was completely subservient. The whole relationship lacked love, care and passion. Spice: 🌶️🌶️ a little tame Stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Overall: a disappointment in comparison to the other books in this series.
Fated mates but slow burn AGE-GAP. (Hero is >1 century old, Heroine is 22 lol) - they’re fae so they all look beautiful Virgin Heroine Celibacy Hero Mild angst : hero has to decide between his duty or his heart! No cheating Mild other man: some loser who kept pestering the heroine SEXUAL TENSION!! 😩👌🏻💦 - (final sex scene kinda disappointing and less wild than anticipated. All that dirty talk really hyped me up 😭) Heats/mating/knotting 🫦🍆🔥 Epilogue: 3 years later, they got kids!
This has to be my 2nd favorite book by Milana!
I would highly recommend this book!! I would re-read. 🗣️
I’ve read all of Milana Jacks’ work. Usually she’s an immediate add to my list. But I had a hard time with this one. The MMC didn’t seem genuine in his feelings for the FMC. He had to “come to terms” with his love and it seemed like he was just accepting his fate. Where she was always loving and doting on him and followed him around like a puppy when he was constantly using her to push the summer kings agenda. He didn’t do anything for her but for another man. And when he does come back for the FMC, he gives her a necklace and is like “I guess I’m I’ll accept this”.
Written by the Fates ~ This is a voluntary Advanced Reader Copy review of ‘Commander’. To get the most out of this story, the previous books in this series should be read. It is a story of betrayal, lust, loyalty, hierarchy, and Vows. I didn’t care for her opportunist brother in law, and her sister who was there for her, but not. The Commander, oh my holy high testosterone! Loved the epilogue!! It was what I was rooting for!
Loved this book as the others in this series Chloe and D’Artaron were fire together It takes a while for D’Artaron to fully admit his feelings but once he does no other male had a chance This was an exciting and page turner story of the Far world as only Milana can do She always weaves stories that enhance our reading experience in these fantasy worlds Great job Milana Highly recommend this series
I was not a fan of this one. I don’t mind the sweet/submissive fmc but they have to be strong even if it is quietly strong. This one was not that. Lots of things bothered me about this book actually. It’s majorly missing magic. In fact, he takes her magic, says he is going to tame it for her and then proceeds to never give it back. There were so many opportunities for her to be strong or grow as a character but nope she remained a weak, hopeless love sick puppy.
This has been a wonderful series - each book a unique adventure with an HEA, but in the same universe. I love series like this as you get to experience the characters and relationships in new ways with each book. I loved the world building here too. This series doesn't get the credit it deserves as I loved every story.
I have thoroughly enjoyed these four incredible kings and fae-ted queens! Each has been an amazing read and literally just continues to get better each time. I hope there is more in this world as there are a few characters I would love to see also get their happiness.
D’Artaron is by far my favorite thus far. This book was amazing. I loved the characters, the chemistry between them, their personal growth, and their love. I swear I swooned more than once. The writing is fantastic and I can’t wait for another in this series!
Ive read it twice in 2 years. Enjoy the sisters and the powerful and possessive men they fall in love with! 😍 The characters are all unique and different. I love how the author describes the details of the land, castles and clothing! I just hope the last sister Julie also finds true love??? T
I wondered how would he ever leave Et’enne!!! That scene was pure magic and perfection!!!!! 😭 Hoping she continues the storyline… and brings us a terrifying villain to test these thrones!
I love this series and I’ve been looking forward to the commander’s book. It’s was even better than I could have imagined. I loved Chloe! She was his perfect match.
D’Artaron and Chloe are my favorite couple of the series! They are great together. His control and care for her is breathtaking! Her submission and unwillingness to give up on him is incredible!
The princess is set to marry someone who is unworthy. Then, she is being set up for murder. The Commander, who has been faithful to his celibacy, now who is catching feelings of the last sister, the princess.
This is the fourth book in this series. The characters and the continued world building are fantastic. Chloe and D'Artaron made a great couple. I was hooked start to finish. I can't wait to read whatever Milana Jacks writes next.
I’ve been waiting on the Commander’s story. Not sure who or what wrote some of the first chapters because it was hard to follow at first but eventually evened out. It’s a great love story. I’m sad it’s over
