A Contemptible Affection

Rate this book
After Lord Dersingham spurned her last season, Iris Colburn promises to never allow him back into her heart, despite his excuses, his long-standing connection to her family, or the fact that she once loved him.
But upon her return from Paris, Iris finds it is more difficult than she expected to keep Lord Dersingham at arm's length. His presence at nearly every social function Iris attends reminds her more of their blissful past than the sting of his rejection. Worse, she fears she is falling for him again.
If it wasn't for his outrageous behavior, that is. He asks Iris' father for permission to court her -- again -- but then showers attention on the disreputable Miss Halliday.
Iris doesn't know what kind of game Lord Dersingham is playing, but with her heart and her pride on the line, she will do anything to win.

During her early years of reading, Ranee` S. Clark devoured fantasy books, which continued into her adulthood—since she often believes that a well-written romance novel is a delightful fantasy. Though raising three boys can sometimes hamper both romance with her own Mr. Charming and her writing, she tries to get a little of both in every day. And most of the time she succeeds.

Things I liked:
I liked the cover; it was what initially drew me to the book. I liked the plot, I’m a sucker for a second-chance storyline. I liked Iris, I liked that she was strong and wasn’t letting gossip get her down. Even though Iris is upset with Lord Dersingham, she is having to rescue him from sticky situations. I liked Lord Dersingham, although I think his character could have been developed a bit more. I liked the story, but was sad it was so short.

Things I didn’t like:
Our heroine came across a little too cold for me. I could understand why she was mad, I was glad she didn’t forgive Lord Dersingham too quickly, but I still found her a little frustrating. I didn’t understand Lord Dersingham and didn’t feel he was truly sorry for his actions. His excuse was rather lame and I was surprised by how her family and friends were so quick to forgive and overlook Iris’ hurt feelings. Another thing that bothered me, to try and shake things up and get Iris to notice him again he decides to start courting another girl, literally right after asking Iris’ father if he could court Iris again. Duh. Iris was already mad at him for dating a bunch of girls the previous year, so to win her over he starts courting a different girl? Again, duh. I would have liked to see him remorseful, see him really try and court Iris, instead of trying to manipulate her.

Overall, it was a fun short story and I look forward to seeing what Ms. Clark will write next.

I want to preface my review by saying that I have never read a book by Ranee S. Clark. When I started A Contemptible Affection I was immediately transported from my world to Iris's world. It was easy to read this regency story and the writing flowed effortlessly. Although a short story, the characters were well developed, so much that I felt like hitting Iree over the head a few times and telling her to wake up! But alas, women are fickle and have memories that never forget! Iree's journey to find out the true feelings of her heart was a fantastic read that I literally enjoyed every minute of! I can't say that about many books at all! If all of Ranee Clark's books are like this one, then I will be a fan for life! Five stars and I can't wait to get my hands on another of her books!

Ratin: 2.5 stars.

This was a clean regency novella that unfortunately I just could not get into. I had to re-read many paragraphs constantly, especially during the first part of the story. I was getting confused as to who was who. I must that I had been feeling tired on most of the evenings when I tried to read this book so maybe I was not in the right frame of mind to enjoy it. I think I'll give it another chance and re-read it in the future in one sitting just to see if I enjoy it better.

Review to be continued.

I did not like any of the characters in this novella so that made it difficult for me to enjoy this book. I have read other books by Ms. Clark and recommend you try some of the others.
