The dragons rage, a god betrayed, the truth of fire and a queen's desire. In this fifth novel in the 'Book of One' series, the power of the shadow grows, spreading darkness across the lands as the god prepares for war. The warrior's journey turns upon a question of fate, ancient oaths are broken, and the shadow lies in wait, as the truth of fire is revealed.

It's getting worse now. Baker is a confused writer. After gradually making the book complex, she's proven herself incapable handling the multiple subplots. It's out of her hands, wildly spiralling out of control. She's so confused. Initially starting brilliantly, the story began to lose anchor from Book 3. It's steadily grown worse since then. The budding romance between characters has dissipated. The main character is now a shadow of what he was. Baker's handling of the characters has been terrible, really. The characters are lost to her. She doesn't even understand them anymore. Instead of first developing the initial characters, she's bringing more and more in, who are even more confused than the initial characters. It's like an impossibly tight woven knot. Thank heavens I don't have the Book 6. I'll just proceed to the final book.
The first book in this series is really compelling, the characters show very great potentials but as the series progress all the characters seems to become lost by the many subplots and additional characters. Of all the characters' journey, Aaron's (who by the way used to be my favourite) the most annoying and seems to be going nowhere and his situation seems to grow worse each book. The ansari is the most annoying people, their philosophy "to know ansari is to be ansari" feels like grandstanding. They answer difficult question with "because i am ansari" or because you are not ansari" blah blah blah...it is quite irritating, sounds petulant and diversionary (maybe because they really don't know the answer-ha!). If another character defeat the shadow god other than Aaron (because it looks like it's where it's going)...i am going to erase all trace of this series in my shelf...oh wait I alredy DNF the series so i don't care. Am I ranting? I guess I am...
I am done with this series. The story arcs flounder, the characters are quite boring and not very deep. It's interesting to finish book 5 and realize there is simply no emotional connection from one character to the next. I kept hoping the series would get better, but at this point I simply don't care anymore.
There was almost no elf crap in this book so i'm really happy. Everyone is getting stronger, even too strong. It was a pleasant read and i'm looking forward to the sixth book.
