Rate this book
A master manipulator accused of murder. An attorney sworn to defend her. Keera Duggan returns in a riveting novel of suspense by New York Times bestselling author Robert Dugoni.

When Jenna Bernstein, disgraced wunderkind CEO of a controversial biotech company, is accused of murdering her former partner and lover, she turns to Seattle attorney Keera Duggan to defend her. Keera is more than a master chess player who brings her intuitive moves into court—she’s Jenna’s childhood friend. But considering their history, Keera knows that where Jenna goes, trouble follows.

Three years earlier, Keera’s father successfully defended Jenna when she was tried for the killing of her company’s chief medical scientist who threatened to go public with allegations of corporate fraud. Keera knows Jenna too well. When she was a kid, Keera saw Jenna for what she a manipulative and frighteningly controlling sociopath. Now, with only circumstantial evidence against Jenna, Keera is willing to bury any trepidation she might have to defend a woman she believes, this time, to be innocent.

As the investigation gets underway and disturbing questions arise, Keera puts her trust in a client who swears nothing but the truth. If this is all just another devious game, Keera might be working to set a murderer free.

TWO WHISTLEBLOWERS DEAD

ONE WOMAN ACCUSED OF KILLING BOTH

Three years ago, Keera Duggan’s father, Patsy (Known around Court as The Irish Brawler) successfully defended Jenna Bernstein when she was tried for the killing of her company’s chief medical scientist, Eric Wei.

Although Jenna was found innocent in her first trial, the wunderkind CEO of PDRT (Ponce de Leon Restoraative Technologies) has since lost it all, and now she has found herself in trouble again.

But, Patsy is no longer trying cases for his family’s law firm-that task has fallen to his youngest daughter, Keera, who was once Jenna’s childhood friend. And, Keera knows that Jenna has had a mean streak since elementary school which only grew more manipulative in High School and College.

Keera knows that she will have to set aside her personal feelings towards Jenna if she is to provide her with the best defense possible.

Patsy always tried cases the way he played Chess-methodically, calculating and lethal-and his daughter is a Master Chess player who also plays the game and practices Law the same way. But, unlike her father, she isn’t going to coddle Jenna. She accepts the case but warns Jenna that it will be under her terms this time.

The story unfolds in TWO parts. The first 70% is the accusation and discovery phase of the case. (From Detectives on both sides) And, the last 30% is the trial. (the legal thriller part). Since I read Legal Thrillers for the “edge of your seat” TRIALS, I would have preferred part one to be a little bit more succinct so I could get inside the courtroom sooner, but overall, I enjoyed the second book in this series!

It can be read as a standalone as the author does a great job of filling in the blanks of what happened in book one without spoiling the details of it’s case and trial, but as always, when possible, I recommend starting at the beginning so you can get to know the characters and their relationships with each other fully. Review for “Her Deadly Game”: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

This is a series that I will continue with if the author writes another.

A buddy read with MarilynW and DeAnn-be sure to watch for their amazing reviews for additional thoughts!

The second book in the Keera Duggan legal thriller series, Beyond Reasonable Doubt, is a well-crafted and riveting novel full of investigation, family drama, suspense, and courtroom drama. When Jenna Bernstein, disgraced chief executive officer of a biotech company is accused of murdering her former partner and boyfriend, she turns to Duggan and Associates for legal representation.

A few years earlier, Keera’s father successfully defended Jenna when she was tried for killing her company’s chief medical scientist. But Patrick (Patsy) Duggan is no longer the firm’s main criminal defense trial attorney. That is now Keera’s role. Keera and Jenna were once childhood friends, so Keera knows how manipulative Jenna can be. With only circumstantial evidence against Jenna, Keera decides to defend her this time.

Keera is an expert chess player who once competed in tournaments. She uses logic and strategy from the game that she learned from her father in her approach to court cases. She’s competitive, calculating, intuitive, and methodical. While she thinks outside the boxy, she takes a reasoned approach to things. Jenna is manipulative, controlling, a liar, and highly persuasive. While she can be charming and charismatic, she lacks empathy and is often callous and indifferent to the suffering of others. Another great thing about this series is the continuity of characters while also adding in a few new ones.

The author has once again penned an excellent legal thriller. I thought it was very insightful to show how Keera has struggled to make the transition from prosecutor to criminal defense attorned. While she internally debates it, she remembers Patsy’s words of wisdom that they are to ensure the defendant’s constitutional guarantees are respected. The plot is riveting and once again shows both the defense and the police investigations as well as the trial.

Robert Dugoni is an excellent storyteller that always immediately engages me in his novels. IT is written in a style that draws you in and keeps you rapidly turning the pages. Full of well-developed characters, a compelling plot, and plenty of suspense and drama, this is an excellent addition to the series.

Overall, this novel is an engaging, engrossing, and an excellent legal thriller. I can’t wait to read the next book.

Thomas and Mercer and Robert Dugoni provided a complimentary digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own. Publication date is currently set for October 22, 2024.

*CRACK* That is the sound of Robert Dugoni hitting it out of the ballpark with Beyond Reasonable Doubt! I found Beyond Reasonable Doubt to be gripping, well thought out, riveting, and wonderfully written. It is the second book in the Keera Duggan series and can be read as a stand alone, but do yourself a favor and read Her Deadly Game, the addictive first book in this fabulous series.

Master chess player and Seattle attorney, Keera Duggan, has been tasked with representing her childhood nemesis, Jenna Bernstein, after Jenna is accused of killing her former business partner and lover. This will not be an easy task by any means, but Keera is used to thinking several moves ahead, and use all her skills in court.

I was glued to the pages and marveled at Dugoni's writing and plot. Just when I thought I had things figured out, Dugoni threw in another perfectly timed twist. I loved the courtroom scenes, the mystery, the twists, and the reveals in this book. I also enjoyed watching Keera prove herself once again to be a worthy and intelligent lawyer who is no longer standing in her father's shadow.

Fans of Dugoni's other series and stand-alone books will love this book as will fans of courtroom dramas and mystery thrillers. Dugoni knows how to set the stage, create tension, drama and intrigue. This was such a well thought out book and I can't wait to read the next book in this series!

Brilliantly written, well thought out, and hard to put down.

A favorite author, but not my favorite from him.

Keera Duggan is back for book two in this series. Her client is Jenna Bernstein, a person she knows well since her childhood. She was also a former client of Keera's father, Patsy, who defended her and won. Now, Jenna finds herself accused of murder AGAIN, but this time Keera will represent her!

The first half of the book really dragged on too long for me. The discovery phase was very detailed and wasn't that interesting to me, though we did get all the background for the case at hand. The last third that included the courtroom scenes was much better and piqued my interest.

I enjoyed the first one, Her Deadly Game, much more and will most likely read the next in the series.

Thanks to NG for my ARC and this one is out on October 22, 2024

Some people just can’t seem stay out of trouble!🤦🏻‍♀️

Keera Duggan is back in book two of this new budding thriller series by Robert Dugoni.

Keera is called back into the family’s law office from her long needed staycation. Jenna, A previous client and former classmate of Keera’s, seeks her council as the police are accusing her of murder.

And this isn’t the first time Jenna has been in deep trouble with the law. Jenna already dodged a murder rap thanks to the brilliant legal work of Keera’s father.

But now it’s Keera’s turn to work her magic for a woman she had hoped she would never cross paths with again.

I love Keera’s character and though she may not enjoy the mandatory dinners with her family, I would love to pull up a chair to their dinner table. So much so that I really was hoping for a bit more depth into the family drama. As well as Keera's personal life...Perhaps in the next installment?

Overall, another great addition to this series with great courtroom action. Looking forward to more.

My Thoughts /

First and foremost, a huge THANK YOU to NetGalley, publisher Thomas & Mercer, and author Robert Dugoni, for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review. Publication date is currently set for October 22, 2024.

When the second book in the series, Beyond Reasonable Doubt opens, the team at Patrick Duggan & Associates are still riding the highs of their victory in the Vince LaRussa trial (book #1). The office phones have been ringing hot and the firm has been inundated with new, albeit smaller, less controversial, clients. But lots of small money generating clients will not keep the firm afloat forever, and Patrick Duggan & Associates needs another high-profile case, and they need it fast. Well Team, be careful what you wish for!

Isn't there a saying somewhere that says…"You can choose your friends, but you can't choose your family?"

Former prosecutor, turned defence attorney, Keera Duggan has her work cut out for her with this next challenging case. Entrepreneur and wunderkind, Jenna Bernstein has been accused of murdering her business partner, Sirus Kohl. Unfortunately for Bernstein, (an old childhood friend of Keera's), this is not her first brush with the law. She'd been previously accused and tried of the murder of a former employee. In that case, she was represented by Keera's dad, Patsy, who successfully argued the case against Bernstein, and she was acquitted on all charges. Growing up, Keera had a healthy wariness of Jenna, she found her to be manipulative and very light on when it came to telling the truth. So why were they friends? Well, it's complicated…..

Keera wasn't keen on taking the case, she had reservations as to Bernstein's involvement. But as Patsy reminded her, a defence lawyer's job is to defend the accused's constitutional right to a fair trial - that it was the jury who decided the guilt or innocence. For Keera, this means she is going to have to put her personal prejudice aside while she navigates the legal and courtroom proceedings in this trial.

If you were to argue whether this book is more character driven or plot driven, you'd be splitting hairs. IMHO this is one of the few books where both elements are superbly executed. There are many memorable characters in this series, not all of them are likable, some are downright despicable - but they are relatable. Dugoni's portrayal of the Duggan family dynamics add yet another layer to the character driven part of the narrative.

Like a game of chess, this narrative has many moving pieces or 'legal moves'; which to the reader might not make sense at the time, but you are trying to guess your opponent's strategy and attempting to out manoeuvre them. It's a high-stakes game. The author excels at presenting and integrating the issues from a police perspective as well as from a legal perspective.

Another highly engaging and compelling read, and a wonderful addition to the series.

I'll end my review with the book's dedication from the author.

To my wife, Cristina, for giving me the best life a husband and father could ever ask for. You deserve all the credit.

From the complex plot to the engaging characters, Beyond Reasonable Doubt was everything that I’ve come to expect in a Robert Dugoni novel. The second book in a series, I was duly impressed by the binge-worthy premise packed full of twists. What I might’ve loved the most, however, was the perfectly intermixed crime fiction subgenres of police procedural and legal thriller. From the realistic court scenes to the slowly unraveling police case, I was spellbound to the words from the riveting prologue to the smile-inducing last page.

The characters, however, were what made this book sing. I mean, if Keera and Rossi’s dual POVs don’t manage to grab your attention, then the deliciously sociopathic main character you’re simply going to love to hate will hook you for sure. Then there was Keera’s family drama. Furthering the development of several other supporting characters while also making the plot feel complete, it confirmed for me that while this could be read as a standalone, I don’t recommend it. After all, you don’t want to miss a minute with Keera.

I do have to say, however, that this one wasn’t quite as brilliant as the first book in the series, Her Deadly Game. While I love a good police procedural, the first two-thirds of the book dragged on just a bit. Besides…I was anticipating an out-and-out legal thriller. As compared to book one—which I gave 5+ stars—this one had a much slower pace and required some serious concentration when the reveal was exposed. At the same time, I think this could have been more about my expectations and less to do with the quality of the plot.

All in all, just like Keera, it’s clear that Dugoni is a fan of chess strategy as well. With deft feints and more than one surprising twist, there wasn’t a chance of me guessing the conclusion before it was all laid at my feet. Stuffed with palpable tension, juicy drama, and plenty of mystery, I’m already ready and waiting for book three in the Keera Duggan saga. So if you too love a good police procedural with a few delectable courtroom battles, grab this book ASAP. Intensely clever, intricately plotted, and flawlessly written, there was—without a doubt—much fun to be had. Rating of 4.5 stars.

Keera's past comes knocking with a twisty murder case that lands right on her desk! With her father out of commission, it's all on Keera to solve this one, and boy, does she handle it like a pro. I absolutely love Keera—she’s got that tough, no-nonsense, independent vibe, and it totally makes her stand out.

Now, normally, court proceedings in these kinds of books can be a bit of a snooze-fest, but not here! Everything was laid out super clearly, making it easy to follow. Plus, there’s a small but satisfying twist that keeps things interesting. All in all, a solid, enjoyable read!

EXCERPT: Keera wouldn't take the case for Jenna or her parents, nor because their firm needed the money, nor even for Patsy's belief in preserving the judicial system. She'd take the case because she'd meant what she said. She wanted to be the best, just like he had been. And because she suspected her father was right - that she'd learn more about herself defending the most difficult cases rather then the easy ones. She wouldn't run from Jenna Bernstein. She hadn't run when they'd been young, and she wouldn't run now. She'd defend her, but she'd do it her way. And in the process, maybe she'd learn a little more about Keera the defense lawyer, as well as Keera the person.

ABOUT 'BEYOND REASONABLE DOUBT': A master manipulator accused of murder. An attorney sworn to defend her.

MY THOUGHTS: The plot to Beyond Reasonable Doubt is complex. I wouldn't recommend you try reading it without first having read Her Deadly Game.

I loved Her Deadly Game, and I was excited to lay my hands on a copy of Beyond Reasonable Doubt where Keera finds herself agreeing to defend her high school nemesis in a murder trial.

While I enjoyed Beyond Reasonable Doubt, it didn't grip me to the extent that Her Deadly Game did. The pacing is steady - maybe a bit too steady. I was looking for a little more excitement, a lot more tension.

The larger portion of the book is taken up by the Discovery phase. Interesting, but . . . . The trial itself is full of manipulation, and once that started I simply could not put this read down. The solution was a complete surprise, so full marks Mr Dugoni for that!

What an ending! And I'm glad to see that Keera is sticking to her guns.

Legal thriller, family drama, who and howdunnit, this is an exciting mix of genres with Robert Dugoni's trademark unexpected ending. Will I be reading the next in this series? Definitely.

🔥🔥🔥HAPPY PUBLICATION DAY 🔥🔥🔥

Thank you, Jonetta for encouraging me to read this! I loved it 💙

Wow! I’m sad to admit this was my first experience with a Robert Dugoni novel, especially since I love legal thrillers!

Jenna Bernstein is on trial for murder once again. She is now accused of killing her former business partner. There were allegations of corporate fraud that were putting her and her partner in jeopardy. Did Jenna murder him to escape prison time? If not Jenna, then who?

This story is centered around the courtroom and boy oh boy do I love a great courtroom thriller! Keera Duggan is the attorney who represents Jenna and she’s a damn good one at that! I loved each and every twist and reveal! This was the second book in the series. I have not read the first one and still enjoyed it immensely!

Gripping courtroom thriller!

This is the second book in the Keera Duggan series.

Keera is now working as a defense attorney, having previously been pushed out of the prosecutor's office by her former boss and lover. She now works for her family’s defense law firm, which is still struggling financially, though it's doing a bit better after Keera’s recent win.

When Jenna Bernstein, the CEO of a biotech company, is accused of murder, she asks for Patsy Duggan to defend her once again. Jenna was previously accused of murdering a chief medical scientist a few years back, and at that time, Patsy defended her. However, Patsy is no longer taking cases as first chair—he’s focusing on his struggle with alcoholism. So, it’s up to Keera to decide whether to take the case and defend Jenna.

Keera is unsure whether she wants to take it. She’s known Jenna since they were kids and believes Jenna to be a sociopath, possibly even a psychopath.

Another great addition to the series! The courtroom scenes were thrilling, and Keera’s strategic approach—especially how she applies her knowledge of chess to her cases—was captivating.

The narration by Saskia Maarleveld, as always, is flawless.

Toxic people leave toxic footprints wherever they go.

Keera Duggan should know. Great legal mind and daughter of another great legal mind, Patsy Duggan, her father. Keera had been pulled from her much deserved vacation by Duggan & Associates. It's a family affair with all members on deck. Patsy, the Irish Brawler, had been known for his legal prowess, but the bottle sometimes called his name too often.

Beyond Reasonable Doubt deals with someone that Keera knows up front and personal since she was a girl. Jenna Bernstein, CEO of Ponce de Leon Restorative Tech, has been charged with the murder of her lover/business partner. Sirus Kohl, the victim, was found dead on the floor of his livingroom by his daughter, Adria. Sirus was turning State's evidence against Jenna who was pilfering money from the investors. Who but Jenna wanted him dead?

Robert Dugoni is not known for presenting cut and dry cases to his readers. This one has teeth. Ol' Jenna was represented by Keera's father, Patsy, for the murder of Erik Wei, chief scientist for PDRT. Patsy was able to get her released without charges five years earlier. Keera knows the real Jenna from childhood. She's not so sure of her so-called innocence. Representing her falls into the hands of Keera when Patsy falls ill.

Beyond Reasonable Doubt has plenty of chills and spills in the run-up with Detective Frank Rossi of the Seattle PD and J.P. Harrison covering investigation for this legal team. But the trophy goes to Keera Duggan for her courtroom skills and analytical behavior. This is a tough case that delivers in aces.

I received a copy of this book through NetGalley for an honest review. My thanks to Thomas & Mercer and to the talented Robert Dugoni for the opportunity.

the setup…
Three years ago, Patrick (Patsy) Duggan successfully defended CEO Jenna Bernstein when she was on trial for murdering her chief medical scientist. Though she was acquitted, Jenna was not considered innocent by the jury of public opinion. Now her former partner and lover has been murdered and the evidence points to her. This time it will be Keera Duggan defending her instead of her father and she’s not a fan. They were childhood “friends” and no one knows better how manipulative Jenna is than Keera. But she will deliver the best defense no matter what.

the heart of the story…
I love a good legal thriller and this is one of the best! Keera used to be a prosecutor before joining the family law practice so she’s particularly skilled in understanding the other side. This case was troublesome for her, however, because of her conflicted feelings about Jenna who she believed to be a sociopath. Keera’s also a great chess player and treats the courtroom and her cases like a big delicious chessboard.

the narration…
I’m such a fan of Saskia Maarleveld so I knew she’d be great and she was. I loved her entire performance but the courtroom scene were stellar!

the bottom line…
I couldn’t wait to get this book and it still surpassed my expectations. Think former Theramos CEO Elizabeth Holmes and you’ve got the mirror image in Jenna Bernstein. Keera’s smart and she’s got the most unlikeable client ever. The case was complicated and Jenna’s guilt or innocence was never clear until the end. It was twisty, clever and gnarly with tense courtroom drama…just the way I love it.

This author has many characters/series. And, stand-alone books. For the most part, I admire his writing, and enjoy whenever a new book of his comes out. This one is the 2nd in his Keera Duggan series. Keera is a defense attorney. And, one of my favorite genre’s is courtroom drama. So, this is what attracted me to this particular series.

The first book in this series was, “Her Deadly Game.” Review here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
But since it had been a while since I read the first book, I did not feel it hindered reading this book as a stand-alone. Of course, if possible, it is always encouraged to read books in series order for the best background on characters.

So, now we are to this book. And, I could see immediately that readers were going to face an interesting dilemma along with their main character, Keera.

The question and concern being, what happens when Keera’s father Patsy expects her to defend Jenna Bernstein, someone she did not trust or care for while growing up, and considered a lying, manipulative, possibly narcissistic, psychopathic b---h?

Not only that, but Keera’s father defended Jenna previously and got her a not guilty verdict for a murder she was accused of committing. And, now Jenna is the prime suspect in this second murder, years later. What is Keera to do? Does Keera believe that even though Patsy won the first case, that it was beyond reasonable doubt? More importantly, do we as readers?

And, that becomes the gist of this story.

The questions evolving in readers minds will no doubt include how Keera can defend Jenna if she believes her to be guilty. Especially defending Jenna when she does not like or trust her. Wouldn’t Keera rather drop out of the case because she felt it was time for Jenna to take responsibility for any of her actions? Or could Jenna be innocent, despite her personality defects?

These questions will probably consume readers as they read on. Hoping the author will eventually get to the point. This in itself could possibly frustrate readers. But eventually we do get to the courtroom, and all the drama and twists provide for a relatively satisfying ending.

This is the second Keera Duggan legal thriller, which I was eager to read as I loved the first one (‘Her Deadly Game’).

Some of the background from the previous book is introduced in brief – Keera Duggan is now taking on a prominent role with clients after her dad Patsy (known as the Irish brawler) is fighting alcohol addiction and has taken a backseat. PSRT is a medical startup pioneering the product LINK which will have the potential to cure deadly diseases / regenerate failing organs with injection of genetic material in the skin. Jenna, at just 22, founded the company and is aggressive in promoting it and gaining funding. Sirus Kohl is an entrepreneur who invests a significant amount of money ($150m) and becomes the COO & CFO. Sirus is much older to Jenna, but they get into a romantic relationship. The product is coming along slowly and there are people in the company who are worried about misrepresentations. This reminded me of the real life unravelling of Theranos (with Elizabeth Holmes as CEO and Sunny Balwani as COO), but the similarity ends here with lot more serious crimes to come.

Erik Wei, chief scientist is found dead after a meeting with Jenna. Patsy represented Jenna and cast reasonable doubt that there were others who benefited more than Jenna with his death. PSRT subsequently has collapsed and is the subject of an investigation. 5 years later, Sirus Kohl, is shot and killed the day before he was to meet with federal authorities to discuss a plea bargain. Jenna is accused of the murder and turns to Patsy & Keera. Keera has known Jeena in school as a manipulative kid and is wary of how truthful she will be with her.

This is a solid second book in what is turning out to a great series. Jenna is a wonderful character, well supported by Detective Rossi and Jenna’s dad. The premise of the story & progressive unravelling of the plot backed by solid procedures & courtroom play makes for very engrossing reading. Unlike the previous book, this one does not attempt to tie up all details of the story. While that is charming in its own way, the last sections could have been a little better. Nevertheless, this is an excellent story. The courtroom strategies and dialogues are top-notch.

My rating: 4.5 / 5.

This is a series I will be keenly following. I am impatiently waiting for the next book in the series!

With friends like these...

Keera has been tasked with defending her former childhood friend, Jenna Bernstein. Jenna stands accused of murdering her former partner and lover, but Keera does NOT want to defend Jenna. Not with the history they have. Keera's mantra regarding Jenna is "Where Jenna goes, trouble follows". Sigh. So much for Keera's staycation.

How I love Mr. Dugoni's books! I've been a fan of his Tracy Crosswhite series from the beginning, and I am already hooked on this Keera Dugan series. Nothing makes me happier than good courtroom drama!

As the book wove through mysteries, twists, and revelations, I found myself unable to guess any of them correctly!

Beyond Reasonable Doubt can be read as a standalone.

BIG thanks to both #ThomasAndMercer and #NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review an early copy of#BeyondReasonableDoubt! This book is #2 in the #KeeraDugganSeries, and it has an expected publication date of October 22, 2024.

This is the second book in the Keera Duggins series and, since I had read the first and liked it, I happily picked this one up. Although it is always nice to read previous books, I think this one could be enjoyed as a stand alone.

Description:

My Thoughts:
With what Keera knew about Jenna from her prior interactions with her, I feel like she had a conflict of interest from the start on this one. Regardless, Keera is a fierce attorney and gave it her all. Thre is some definite tension throughout the book and some great courtroom drama. The issues continue with Patsy fighting his alcoholism and Keera is trying her best to be supportive of him. Keera's chess playing background comes through in her profession making her mind work in a logical, calculating, methodical way to keep her focused and make the right moves. I enjoy the chess references. I recommend this legal thriller as well as the series. Robert Dugoni spins a good story.

Jenna Bernstein was the CEO of a biotech company that raised money fraudulently. When she is accused of murdering her former associate/lover, she seeks the help of the Duggan law practice. Father Patsy had gotten Jenna off of a murder charge five years ago. With Patsy indisposed, it falls on his daughter, Keera, to defend her. Childhood acquaintances, Keera knows Jenna to be a manipulative, cruel, liar.

This is the second in the Keera Duggan Series. I am a big fan of Robert Dugoni’s books and did read the first in this series, Her Deadly Game. This one, however, would work as a stand alone.

Dugoni always weaves a good tale. Well plotted with a contemporary theme and good character development, this is a smooth, engrossing read. I like Keera and look forward to picking up the next installment in the series. Move over, Tracy Crosswhite, Dugoni has created another strong, capable female MC.

Robert Dugoni can do no wrong in my eyes. I’ve yet to read a book by him that I haven’t enjoyed and Beyond Reasonable Doubt is no exception.

The second in the Keera Duggan series, here we find defence attorney Keera defending a CEO of a biotech company accused of murdering her business partner. The accused is a childhood friend of Keeras, one that Keera never liked. Her friend Jenna always had to win, always had to have things her way. She would stop at nothing to win and didn’t mind who she hurt along the way. Keera has serious doubts about her innocence but the history between their families and a perceived favour Keeras father and mentor owes to Jennas family force her hand.

Is Jenna guilty? If so can Keera still do the job she is paid to do and give her client the best defence?

I love this series already. Keera is a fantastic central character and her family dynamic gives the books an extra layer.
Dugoni is such a readable writer. One where the writing and storytelling seem effortless. He seems to pump out a lot of books(all the better for me) but it’s not at the expense of quality.

This book works its way through the mysteries and concludes without a lot of silly twists and “reveals” at the end and is all the better for it. I just devoured this book. A brilliant story expertly told.

And easy 5 stars for me. Hats off to Dugoni. Quantity and quality is a rare thing.

Many thanks to the publisher for the ARC through Netgalley.

Beyond Reasonable Doubt is the second book in the Keera Duggan series by award-winning, best-selling American author, Robert Dugoni. When his alcoholism finally forces him to step back from the front line at Duggan and Associates lawyers, Patsy Duggan’s youngest daughter Keera becomes the face of the company’s trial appearances. Called back in from a well-earned break, Keera is chagrined to learn that the reason is Jenna Bernstein, whose former lover, biotech entrepreneur, Sirus Kohl, has been murdered.

Five years earlier, Jenna was tired for the murder of Erik Wei, a scientist who had threatened to expose her biotech start-up as marketing a product that could not perform as advertised. Erik had been shot dead, and Patsy Duggan had managed to get her acquitted. Fearing she will again be charged, she wants a repeat performance.

But Keera knows Jenna well, has watched her perform, and knows her to be a manipulative liar. A witness later describes Jenna as “a spoiled, narcissistic bitch who, when she doesn’t get her way, attacks” and Keera doesn’t disagree. Will she take the case?

Prosecutor Walker Thompson is still feeling the sting of the loss when Jenna was acquitted, certain that a murderer had been set free, so he sees this as a chance to redeem his reputation. Seattle Police detective, Frank Rossi is quickly on the scene after Kohl’s daughter, Adria discovers his body, and he and his partner try to investigate all angles, knowing Keera Duggan, truly her father’s daughter, will have something clever up her sleeve if she takes the case.

Keera and her investigator, former SPD cop, JP Harrison, do some thorough research of their own: Keera knows that they can’t rely on Jenna to be truthful unless it suits her. After all, Keera has a strong motive and her movements on the night of the murder aren’t helpful: she’s the prime suspect.

Dugoni once again gives the reader an excellent crime drama, cleverly plotted with superb courtroom scenes and a brilliant twist. This is a gripping read and more of this cast will be eagerly anticipated.

A 3.5 rounded to 4 stars.

Last year when I read the first book of the Keera Duggan series,Her Deadly Game, I was completely awed by the taut narration from the author, and it reminded me so much of the quick-paced, legal thrillers by John Grisham. This book too kept me entertained but I felt that the case covered in the first book was more nuanced than the one handled in this book.

Keera Duggan is a defense attorney in her father's firm, but she was also a prosecutor few years back. So it's quite a shift for her in terms of her mindset and strategy to defend and argue for her clients, who are sometimes charged with violent crimes like murder and rape. And in some cases where there is only circumstantial evidence, it's Keera's job to prove that her client is, if perhaps, not guilty, at least maybe, not guilty beyond reasonable doubt.

Keera's vacation abruptly ends when her sister Maggie, calls her into office for an emergency meeting. Jenna Bernstein, the ex-CEO of a biotech company is charged with the murder of her business partner and her lover, Sirus Kohl. Three years earlier, Keera's father, Patsy had successfully defended Jenna when she was charged with the murder of the company's scientist and whistle-blower, Erik Wei. Although Jenna seems to be a sociopath, with absolutely no guilt over the consequences of her actions, can she be a psychopath too?

As Keera gets to the bottom of this tangled mess of a case, she also gets to test her own mettle as an attorney. As always the author's writing is flawless and we get to read some really well written courtroom scenes. I did feel that the author was writing in circles sometimes about the evidence in the case and also the case seemed to be pretty simple one to solve. I also missed the interaction between the Duggan family members, especially since Patsy is MIA for the courtroom drama. But I do love this series, its a quick-read and I love the efficient and focused Keera and how she is always two steps ahead of her opponents.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the advance copy of the book.

Although this is fiction it reminded me of a real-life crime surrounding the company Theranos. The "brains" behind that fiasco is still in prison. Having started reading the book on it Bad Blood, then abandoning it; I'd like to get back to it sometime soon.

Beyond Reasonable Doubt has some interesting characters, a decent plot and narrative. I felt the story dragged on a bit long. So, rounding down to 3 stars.

First and foremost, a large thank you to NetGalley, Robert Dugoni, and Thomas & Mercer for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.

Robert Dugoni returns with one of his newer series, where Keera Duggan serves as a gritty lawyer set to help those who need it most in Seattle. When she discovers her family firm has taken on quite the client, Keera js a tad ill at ease. Jenna Bernstein is a disgraced CEO of a biotech company, accused of murdering her partner. The case is troubling on many levels, including a personal one, as Keera tries to find a way out of helping. But, with a father whom she adores, Keera is soon defending Jenna and taking the case to court in hopes of saving her client. A great addition to Dugoni’s work and a stellar novel for the curious reader.

After narrowly escaping jail for murder a few years ago, Jenna Bernstein is back in the news. The disgraced CEO of a controversial biotech company had been on trial for killing one of her science advisors, but now it is her partner and former lover she is accused of killing. When she approaches the firm that helped her before, Jenna’s met with one of Seattle’s great legal minds, Patsy Duggan. However, the Irish Brawler is trying to stay clean from drink and his family law firm has another lawyer who might be able to help even more. Keera Duggan is called back from her holiday to help, though she is blindsided when she arrives and sees Jenna waiting for her. Their past comes bubbling up and Keera does not like the feeling.

While trying to put their differences aside, Keera and Jenna work swiftly, with Patsy in the middle, to cobble together a story about the victim. Jenna does not deny she was in the area, but is clear that she is innocent. The facts begin piling up and the police are gathering evidence, all of which is showing just how brazen Jenna has been in the past and how she will stop at nothing to protect her company. With the US Attorney breathing down her neck on another case, Jenna is determined to dodge the bullet and keep out of the spotlight.

As Keera tries to make her case airtight, she cannot help but remember the past she and Jenna shared. Their animosity was palpable, as they grew up, but even Keera knows that justice is something everyone ought to have. However, Jenna presents in a troubling manner, as though she is sociopathic and on the path to being completely disconnected to those around her. With the evidence piling up against her, Jenna will have to rely on Keera to save her. What’s the piece of evidence they need and will Keera be able to extract it at the right time? Dugoni fashions this great thriller against the backdrop of a fast-paced courtroom drama. Perfect for those who have enjoyed much of the author’s work in the past.

The writing of Robert Dugoni has always been of interest to me. His great storytelling abilities is matched with a strong narrative base that keeps the reader interested from the outset. As the story gains momentum, Dugoni uses a mix of chapter lengths to provide a pace that pulls the reader into the middle. Gritty action and banter seals the deal and soon there is no hope the for reader to escape. Characters emerge and provide needed depth to keep the reader curious. Returning characters offer development to advance their own storylines. While only the second book in the series, the plot is well-paced and pulls things together, providing surprises and backstory when needed to leave the reader wondering what Keera, Patsy, and even Jenna will do when faced with the reality before them. This is a series I am eager to see grow and Dugoni has his work cut out for him.

Kudos, Mr Dugoni, for once again pulling the reader into the middle of your masterful writing.

Beyond Reasonable Doubt was the second installment in the Keera Duggan series by Robert Dugoni. Although I usually like to begin a series with the first book, Beyond Reasonable Doubt can easily be read as a stand-alone book. It was very well written and had me guessing throughout. I would describe Beyond Reasonable Doubt as a mystery/thriller with added emphasis on police procedures and authentic courtroom drama. It took place in Seattle, Washington and had an array of complex and very interesting characters. Beyond Reasonable Doubt was well plotted and engaging throughout.

Keera Duggan was many things but most people that knew her admired her for her talent as a master chess player and an accomplished attorney. She had recently joined her family’s law firm. Her father, Patsy, had a reputation for thinking outside the box. He had passed those qualities on to Keera. Her father always encouraged her to think at least two steps ahead of her opponent. Being a chess prodigy helped her with this. Her father, Patsy, also known as “The Irish Brawler” had started to take a step back in the practice recently. He had experienced some personal issues that made him decide to quit taking cases as the lead trial attorney. It was no wonder then that Keera was brought in on Jenna Bernstein’s case. Keera and Jenna had known each other since they were young but Keera had never liked or trusted Jenna. The COO and CFO of PDRT, Sirus Kohl, had been found murdered in his own home and Jenna was named as a suspect. Besides working together at PDRT (Ponce de Leon Restorative Technologies) Jenna and Sirus Kohl were lovers, despite their age differences. Just a few months ago, Jenna had been charged with the murder of Eric Wei, the lead scientist at PDRT, and had gotten off due to reasonable doubt. Keera’s father had represented Jenna in that trial. Now, here was Jenna again seeking council for another murder she was accused of committing. Keera knew her father was not about to take this case and Keera wanted nothing to do with Jenna Bernstein. Jenna was a manipulator and a liar. Keera, however, decided to take Jenna’s case with the stipulation that Keera would call the shots and Jenna would comply no matter what she thought. Would Keera be able to prove Jenna’s innocence or at least plant enough reasonable doubt in the juror’s minds to acquit Jenna of killing Sirus Kohl?

I have been a fan of Robert Dugoni for quite some time. Beyond Reasonable Doubt was a gripping mystery that far exceeded my expectations. It was seeping with mystery, doubt, drama and tension. The ending was outstanding. I could not have predicted it if I tried. The alternating chapters that focused on Keera’s and Police Detective Rossi’s POV’s kept me engaged and curious. I loved the twists that Robert Dugoni through in to make me second guess my thoughts. The courtroom scenes were authentic and interesting. I also enjoyed the back stories about Keera’s friendship with Jenna when they were younger. It was gratifying to witness Keera put Jenna in her place during the investigation and trial. I really enjoyed reading Beyond Reasonable Doubt by Robert Dugoni and highly recommend it.

Thank you to Thomas Mercer for allowing me to read Beyond Reasonable Doubt by Robert Dugoni through Netgalley in exchange for a honest review.

This was absolutely fantastic! There’s something about the way this author writes that sucks me in immediately and does not let go until the last page. And leaves me wanting more. I didn’t think I could love a series as much as Tracy Crosswhite but this series is excellent. I love the characters as well as the difficult family dynamic. Such a great read.

Story 3.5 rounded up to 4 stars. Narration 4.5 stars
Normally I love this author’s books, but this one fell just a bit short. The author’s Tracey Crosswhite books range between 4 and 5 stars for me and I just can’t put this book in that same category. This is mainly due to being a bit slow to get into and the lack of much of a life for the main character. She’s a good lawyer, but seemingly has little social life beyond her family. This was a murder mystery that involved a character that was someone the main character has known and hated since childhood. Having to be a defense lawyer for someone that treated her horribly in the past was a unique problem. I just wanted more from the main character as the courtroom parts were a bit dry until towards the end. Maybe I just need to stick with the author’s detective novels although I’ve read others by him that I thought were really quite good. I’m going to leave it there as I think it just comes down to personal preference. Others, I am sure will enjoy this-as I did, but not as much as others by him.

As a longtime fan of Robert Dugoni’s work, especially The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell and the first Keera Duggan novel (Her Deadly Game), I was eager to dive into Beyond Reasonable Doubt. While this second book in the series offers a solid legal thriller, it didn’t quite grip me in the way I’d hoped.

Criminal defense attorney Keera Duggan returns to the courtroom, this time defending her high school rival turned health tech wunderkind in a murder trial. The writing is good, but I didn’t feel invested in the outcome of the trial. The pacing, while steady, didn’t build the same level of tension that made the first book such a standout for me.

Narrator Saskia Maarleveld is an audiobook pro, giving strong delivery and seamlessly alternating between male and female characters.

Thank you to NetGalley, Brilliance Publishing, and Thomas & Mercer Publishing for providing me with the ebook and audiobook in exchange for my honest review.

*4.5 stars ✨

You can never go wrong with a Dugoni book. He always delivers a solid story. This one is no exception. Keera is back and this time is about to defend a childhood “friend”. Jenna was tried a few years earlier for the murder of one of her employees. Keera’s father had defended her then. Jenna had gotten off with that trial, but now has been arrested again for the murder of her past lover and investor in her company. Keera’s relationship with Jenna was always contentious and never with trust. Keera still doesn’t trust Jenna and probably thinks she’s a sociopath. She has a job to do though and she’s going to see this through. Dugoni sets us up for his usual ride. A legal drama with some twists. Never a dull moment while reading his books.
