Rate this book
Alternate cover for ISBN 1491022396 / 9781491022399

For Troy Decker, the world of angels has always been a familiar mystery. Robes, halos, and wings have filled his dreams since he was old enough to crawl. But it wasn’t until the last year that he truly felt like he was one of God’s chosen angels.

He’d thought only a miracle would allow him to receive his scepter. And he was one hundred percent correct. When God granted Troy his scepter, he never dreamed it would be for saving ones of his closest friends. But with many things in his angel life, Troy had to sit back and trust in his faith. Not only in God, but in himself and his family and friends.

Unfortunately, peace rarely finds Troy. With his first gift from God in hand, he must concentrate on the second gift; the robes of an angel - granted for an act of sacrifice. Hindering his progress is a former friend of his parents, Kyle Downey. Kyle is the leader of a group of fallen angels and his sinister plans for Troy bring howling demons and monsters stampeding into the War for Sins.

Can Troy follow the path God has set in front of him? How will he know what to sacrifice to receive the precious gift? And why, more than anything else in the world, does Kyle Downey want Troy to fall?

Troy can almost never have peace, for as soon as something good happens, something bad comes to destroy it. He has already received his first gift from God, so now he must concentrate on the second gift. The angel’s robes -which can only be received via a sacrifice. And constantly trying to stop his progress is a former friend of his parents, now fallen angel, Kyle Downey. Kyle is the leader of a group of fallen angels that follow Lucifer, and his plans are to send a variety of evil demons Troy’s way. Troy must keep his faith while he makes lifelong decisions and rushes headfirst into the War for Sins.

This is an amazing story of love, faith, sacrifice, and loss. There are many twists and turns in the plot and every page is a cliffhanger. The plot was easy to follow even though it constantly changed, as soon as something good happened, something bad followed shortly after. Even though the book had many sad parts, everything was tied up later for the good. Chris Smith has truly created a work of art and this book is a wonderful read for so many ages.

I would definitely recommend this book. Although, I will say this book is not meant for younger ages. It deals with death and loss, and it is definitely going to get worse before it can get better. I would recommend this book to ages 10 and up. Just because this is technically a “teenager” recommended book, doesn't mean that adults won’t like it. This book is great for so many ages, there are no bad words, and it truly focuses on faith and the character’s walk with God. I would recommend this book to people in a heartbeat.

Wow! I really didn't expect to be wowed by the books in this series, but the first two have been great. I think they're listed as YA but this one is borderline for me on transitioning to a pure adult read. The Christian themes are still heavy and there's no cursing or anything - but I could picture the ending of this book to be difficult on some younger kids to take. I'd recommend for 12 and up.

The fights between the angels and the demons are some of the best action scenes I can recall in any books I've read in the last few years. Enough descriptions for me to visualize without getting lost, but not too much to muddy up the flow.

The writing is tremendous and I absolutely love the characters - which is what makes the ending so hard (without giving anything away). It says in the back that the third book will be available sometime in early 2014....... I wish it was ready to go right now. It was one of those endings where I really want to know what's going to happen next. Great read!

My wife absolutely loved it as well.

After reading reviews, I was fearful that I may not like this book as well as the first. I'm not sure what those people were talking about, but I found this book to be more of page turner than the first. You really start to get to know the idiosyncrasies of the characters in this book. I felt like I might know what they were going to do next, but the author always took it to the next level and still surprised me. There are still some "mysteries" and open story lines that I look forward to watching develop and/or be revealed. As the characters grow up, I can see the correlation to Harry Potter, in that the plot is likely to darken before it gets better. I'm SO GLAD I waited to read this installment until the 3rd was released, because I immediately picked up the 3rd book and started reading.
*Dear Chris, please write faster. The suspense will surely kill me.*

Not as good as the first book in the series, but I still liked it. Definitely left me wanting to move to book 3, but just didn't have the same magic as book 1. The characters were still great, and the ending is a big Wow!

I went into this book hoping to see more back story on the main villain. There is quite a bit of talk, but he's just not in the book quite enough for me to connect with him as an antagonist - completely. I like the idea behind him as a charter, just not enough to sink my teeth into. With it being a series, I guess that's required a little to keep some mystery, but I hope to see Kyle more fleshed out in the next installment.

Overall, a very good read! Good action scenes that flow well, and characters that are easy to attach an emotional connection.

This one was really close to a 5 star rating for me. The writer has definitely taken some strides in his style and I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in the series. Troy Decker has truly grown as a character. Very easy for me as a reader to feel the triumphs and pains he is feeling throughout his adventures and quests. Once again, the messages in this installment are fantastic. For this book, it was about friendship and love. The main theme of sacrifice takes a back seat to me a little over the others. It's there for sure, but the climax was more about love than sacrifice. Troy made the right choice, as sad and terrible as it was. On to book 3!

I absolutely loved the first book in the series. This one is even better. Troy has developed from a boy to a young man. His "choice" at the end (even though I don't see it as a choice coming from a motherly perspective) was 100% correct. His mom wouldn't have had it any other way. The last scene will really transform this series. Sad but great. I think that's the sign of a wonderful book. Something that can move you while being entertaining and fun the whole time. And an added plus, the messaged throughout the two books I've read so far have been something everyone can enjoy and learn from.

I can't wait to dive into the third book.

Don't :) you :) just :) love :) it :) when :) goodreads :) doesn't :) save :) your :) review :)

Sigh. I wrote a rather bitter review about this book but I'll just keep it simple this time. It had some fun action scenes, but for the most part the plot meandered, the characters were bland, and Troy's creepy crush on Angela only got worse. He frequently had to 'remind himself it was not socially acceptable to droll'...Gross. No thanks.

Not continuing this series. :)

Books for all ages. This one is a message of sacrifice and loyalty. The characters are what make it so good. There's a short scene where Troy goes out of his way to help a struggling family in need. Its the small side stories that make life special. As I get older I understand that more.

Another good thing was that it was only $4 on my kindle.

Wow on this one! I read the three books available in back to back to back days. If the third book hadn't been out already, I would have went absolutely nuts! I had a lot of tears falling at the end of this book. When authors take away a main character, it should mean something. This one surely does.

I enjoyed the first book in this series, but this is one of my favorite books ever. Troy and Angela's relationship starts to flourish and strengthen but its Troys mom who steals the show. Mr Smith wrote a wonderful classic in my eyes. Its full of faith and sacrifice. For God, we fight!!

Just a wonderful book. I read the first in the series and enjoyed it, but this one was beautiful. It's not real rare I'm moved to tears by books, but this one surprised me with how hard the ending hit me. Get your hankies ready as you come to the ending.

Even better than the first. The build up to the climatic scene is wonderful. Though the ending left me sad. So glad I had book three already to keep straight on reading!!
