I picked up Birds of New Mexico Field Guide because of a college assignment requiring me to find four birds in the wild, and then identify them. It was a simple assignment, I know, but it is utterly terrifying when you have little to no idea about things in the wild. I tried looking at other field guides, both online and in print, but I could make neither hide nor tail from anything within those pages. I felt hopeless. That is, until, I found this particular field guide. I saw the cover and was like, alright, this might work. So I checked the reviews and I immediately saw people talking about the field guide being separated by COLOR! I bought the book instantly, no further research required.

So, as to the book itself, Birds of New Mexico Field Guide is absolutely fantastic. It is the most effortless field guide I have ever seen because if I see a yellow bird, then all I need to do is find the page with a yellow tab. Boom, flip a few pages and there's the bird with all of the important information. I don't need to know anything about the bird except its primary color to locate it in this handy little pocket-sized book. Do you know how amazing that is? It's so great that I've been carrying the book around with me for days, just happily whipping it out anytime I see a bird. I am starting to feel like I have an actual connection to nature, an interest in what is going on around me, and that is all thanks to this book. Honestly, I am beyond thankful I bought it and I absolutely recommend it to anyone, regardless if you need it for an assignment!

Stan Tekiela has a series of books out that have arranged the most common birds of a state or region by their predominant color(s) and size. As a visitor to New Mexico, I found this particular book great for those birds where I had no idea where to start other than their approximate size and major color(s). I have given others of Stan's books as gifts to people who were fairly new birders in other states and they have also found his categorization especially helpful in similar situations. I think these books are a nice complement to a more typical guide (bird guide books are usually arranged by category of bird).

5 beaks...5 beaks. I give Tekiela's book 5 beaks.

I will own this book, I will know all 339 pages of this book. It will wear a whole in my back pocket. It's pages will be torn, marked up, folded, and smudged with dirt. I have learned my flanks, lores, rumps, crests, caps, crowns, etc. I now know the difference between a platform net and pendulous nest and a cavity nest. I've got to learn my cowbirds from my flicker from my flycatchers. I will learn which bird "brood" (what doe that mean), incubate. I will learn the migrator from the non-migrator. And I will find all 143 bird in New Mexico. This will take me into my BIG YEAR...and hopefully to victory!

An easy to use guide that is organized by bird color. These simple, introductory guides are gold. This one is especially well done as the male and females of different colors are separated, but there's an inset photo of the other for reference.
