The Wilds of Montana #5

She's a Wild One

Rate this book
She's a Wild One is a Small Town, Enemies to Lovers, Rival Family romance in the Wilds of Montana series, featuring Millie Wild!

From New York Times Bestselling author Kristen Proby comes the final installment in her beloved Wilds of Montana series, featuring a small town, marriage of convenience, second chance love for the ages!

I have loved Millie Wild for more than eight years. Since that summer long ago when we were inseparable, stealing moments, keeping our love a secret.

And my girl has hated me for just as long.

When my father found out about my love for Millie, the daughter of the rival family next door to us, he threatened everything I love the most if I didn’t let her go. My father didn’t give idle threats.

I had to hurt her to save her.

And for eight long years, I stayed away. But now, my father is dead and buried, leaving a caveat in the will that in order to inherit what’s rightfully mine and my sisters’, I have to marry and stay that way for one full year.

There’s only one woman in the world that I would consider saying I do to.

Millie is happy with her life, owning her coffee shop, enjoying her family. I deserve her glares, her snarky comments. Every moment of pain, from her or self-inflicted, is mine to own. She deserves so much more than me, standing on her doorstep, asking her to marry me. To help me.

But she says yes. Yes to one year of being mine, and I plan to show her that she’ll be mine until the stars fall from the sky.

With the name Lexington, I know that I’ve caused pain for not only Millie but the entire Wild family. Will I be able to convince my wild rose that I’m in love with her for all of the right reasons, or will the centuries-old family rivalry tear her away from me?

I tried to find this information in reviews but nobody talks about it so I’m here to provide it.

H and h spend a month together when she is 19 and he’s “pushing 30” so I’m assuming around 28/29. OF COURSE h is a virgin. They sleep together one time and then the next day he cruelly dumps her because his asshole father threatened to kill her and H’s sister if he stayed with her. They are separated for 8 years until the H’s father dies. OF COURSE the h stays fucking celibate for 8 years. Not even going on a date with another man. Even though she hates H for how he hurt her. MAKE IT MAKE SENSE!! You are a beautiful young woman in the prime of your life. You have sex ONE TIME with someone you’ve known for a measly month and then you are just done??

So if the H hadn’t went to her about getting married so he could get his inheritance she would have just died with cobwebs between her legs?? If that hadn’t been a stipulation in his father’s will, would he even have tried to get with her??

OF COURSE H is not celibate although we get zero details of his exploits which pissed me off. If you’re gonna address her sex life then you should also address his. Make him answer for how he could be with other women when he was in love with the h. When he asked her why there hadn’t been any others, she says “because they weren’t you”. So that just further magnifies the fact that he was ok being with other women who weren’t her. It doesn’t seem like he was a manwhore BUT he’s been madly in love with h all this time, sees her around town, flirts with her etc. yet is fucking other women.

Immediate 1 star because I’m so sick of this shit. This is not romance, it is insulting garbage. I won’t ever touch another book by this author.

millie & holden WRECKED ME! I did not finish this book. It finished me. I will NEVER be the same after this book. I loved literally everything about it. God forgive me, but i am glad holden's sperm donor is dead. I hated that devil. he was DISGUSTING! can't wait for the girls to have their stories. they deserve it. i am heartbroken for them and holden. everything about millie and holden was so heartachingly beautiful and painful at the same time. I will be thinking about them and the wilds for a long time. cannot believe the wilds are over. brb, I need 3 to 5 business days to recover. thank you to valentine pr for this arc.

I’m a little bit gutted about only rating this one 2stars.

Since the beginning, I’ve really been looking forward to Millie’s book and I feel like that was some of my problem, I’d built it up too much.

The main problem for me though, was the husband/wife/baby girl. I can deal with babe, I can even deal with sweetness if it’s done right, honey makes me feel a little sick in my mouth but again it can work…but the fact she had to address him as husband (and yes I mean had to) just gave me the ick and it would throw off the whole vibe of literally every scene for me.
Holden wasn’t how I had expected him to be, and though that wasn’t entirely a bad thing, I did NOT like the way he would tell her what to do. I think it was meant to be in a hot, caveman, please throw me over your shoulder and take me to bed sort of way- but it just didn’t feel like that to me. It felt too much, and every time Millie would just let it slide, I felt irritated with her.

Then the big thing that had me actually laughing out loud and most probably the moment I realised I would never love this one- the piercings. No, not the piercings, but the REASON for them. How is nobody else reading that and seeing it for the absolute ridiculousness that it is!? HOW?

I haven’t written a review this long in years and I do hate that this has turned into one big moan about a book in a series that I have actually really enjoyed as a whole. I love all of the characters and the ranch and the town and the whole family feel and that alone is what my stars are for.

I have absolutely enjoyed every book in this series but I think this is my new fave, there’s something about Millie and Holden that was just so special. Maybe it was Sebastian York growling my wife several times here 😉 Sad it’s the last book in the series but what a way to end things!

Well slap my ass and call me a cowgirl! I think I've found my new favorite book in the series. This was a wonderful round up to the Wilds of Montana series. We put a family feud to bed and a young love got a fresh start at an HEA.

I truly loved Millie and Holden. She is the youngest, beloved daughter, and he is the oldest, overburdened son to a cruel and vicious man. Neither is really sure how the rivalry between their families began but they are determined to break the chains. 8 years ago, they fell in love and tried to do that. But threats and fear stopped Holden from making Millie his. Yet, he never forgot her and he etched his loss onto his skin.

Holden was watching and waiting for an opportunity to claim her again. His cruel shit of a father unknowingly puts the tools to get her in his hands by making a marriage necessary to inherit. He tells Millie it's to help his younger sisters (and it is!), but he ain't gonna give her up when the terms of the deal are done. He's gonna prove that no one is more devoted than him.

I understood Millie's hurt from the past and her resistance at giving him a second chance. But the moment she's back in his arms, she knows this is where she's meant to be. I loved every second of it.

I thought this round out the series so well. We get cameos of all the Wild Brothers and the Iconic Women's Collective. It was just lovely. The camaraderie and the way they all jump in to help is truly what women supporting their girls is all about.

This was wonderfully performed by Sebastian York and Grace Grant. Mr. York is always a treat for me. His smooth as silk voice gets me hot under the collar for sure. Ms. Grant was new to me and I loved the rasp and tone of her voice. They were a perfect pair.

I'm really looking forward to the next series and the Blackwell brothers. Kristen Proby can take me to Montana anytime.

OMG!! This story, guys. Talk about saving the best till last. As Kristen Proby brings the heat and the heartbreak in Millie and Holden's story.

And what a beautiful, explosive, and emotionally charged story it is.

As at nineteen Millie fell head over cowboy boots for the older Holden. But because of a centuries old feud between her family and his nobody could know they were dating and they thought they were safe.

That is until Holden returned home after the best night of his life to find his dad waiting for him with a promise that tore his world apart and left Holden having no choice but to break Millie Wild's heart.

And now eight years later, Millie can barely be in the same room as Holden without remembering what it's like to be touched by him, and she hates herself for it. But she hates Holden more, especially because he sends her mixed signals and gets jealous whenever she speaks to another man.

Yet, when Holden's dad dies and he learns that he has to marry in order to inherit anything. Holden knows that there is only one woman he could ever imagine wearing his ring.

Getting Millie to agree is a different matter. Especially because he has not yet told her the truth.

But despite this, Millie agrees. Although she insists on ground rules.

However, Holden is determined to make Millie his forever and has no intention of sticking with them.

Yet, neither of them quite expected the level of upset they would face on their return. As the feud took its toll on all the generations that went before, especially Millie's dad, who is heartbroken when he finds out that his only daughter has married a Lexington.

But as truths and secrets are unearthed and the type of man Holden's dad really was is revealed, most people come to see a happy couple in love.

Yet, ghosts still linger, and Holden's dad has a long reach even from beyond the grave.

And with great characters, emotional moments, swoon-worthy nicknames, family feels and plenty of spice. This is a fantastic read. That I genuinely read in a few hours it was just that good, and I can't wait to return to Bitterroot Valley in the new year and get to know a new family.

I would happily recommend this story to all.

My thanks to Valentine PR and Kristen Proby for the opportunity to read an early copy of She's a Wild one. ☺️

I find this story disturbing. The MMC exhibits various controlling and hot-tempered behaviors that are red flags for abusive behavior. He grew up with a violent and abusive father and it's not clear in the story line how - or even if - he actually healed from that abuse. Whenever his tone or behavior get controlling and angry, it is explained away by somehow insinuating that he does it because he cares so much for the FMC. That's a classic variation of victim-shaming. The author does try to depict the FMC as a smart and strong character, but a truly smart and strong character would have never agreed to that marriage. In no universe ever would she agree to marry him under the narrated circumstances. You really have to suspend any common sense when reading this story.

I wonder if authors actually think about the titles of their books seriously…

She’s a wild one? How? She stayed celibate/faithful to him for EIGHT YEARS (!!) while he was out there living his best life. Not sure how that computes?? 🤔🙄

I love this series!! This one was really good!! Millie is Holden's entire world... and you feel it reading the pages of this book! Holden and Millie have family rivalry but still hook up once.. his dad gets in their way. Holden is obsessed with Mille and is the PERFECT Book boyfriend. 😍😍🥰

She owns a coffee shop, and he runs his family ranch.. he raised his 4 younger sister. These two are the perfect union... even with the conflict, I loved it. Enjoy!

**Second chance romance
**Small town
**Forbidden (family rivals)
**Age gap (11 years)
**Slow burn.. (8 years wait)
**Past traumas (his dad)

INFINITY STARS 😭🤭

Millie & Holden's love story was epiccc in all of the best ways! I was absolutely living for the "always been you" vibe especially mixed with the family rivalries. I ate up every bit of the tension & left no crumbs behind. It was so emotionally gripping from beginning to end. I don't think I'll ever fully recover from the tragic parts of their past & stories but that's part of what made their love story so beautiful. Grace Grant and Sebastian York were the narrators & they seriously brought this story to life (and me to tears... multiple times)!

This book is perfect for anyone who loves:
- small town
- family rivalry
- first love, second chance
- it's always been you

The Wilds of Montana series was the first I've read (& listened to on audio) by Kristen Proby & I will absolutely be going back through her backlist to catch up on all the side characters' stories! Also while (im)patiently waiting for the Blackwells of Montana series to come out early next year!

Thank you to Kristen Proby, Must Love Audio, and Lyric Audiobooks for sending me an early copy!

I just loved this series so much and was so excited for Millie and Holden's book. She's a Wild One is book 5 in The Wilds of Montana series and can be read as a standalone, but why would you want to. This series is the perfect small-town romance with swoon worthy guys that will make your heart go pitter patter.
Millie is the only girl of the Wild siblings, and her book was so worth the wait. Holden is part of the Lexington family, one of the rivals of the Wilds. Millie and Holden were childhood sweethearts until Holden's dad threatened to hurt her and one of Holden's sisters if he kept seeing her. His only choice was to make him hate her. Years later after his dad passes, Holden and his sisters cannot access their inheritance or money unless Holden marries. The only person Holden would even consider marrying is Millie.
This is a second chance, marriage of convenience, small town cowboy romance. It was always Millie for Holden, never anyone else but convincing her and her family, especially her dad, will prove to be a challenge, after all, their families were rivals for years.
I just loved their journey and how much Holden cared for Millie and how he broke down her walls and rekindled their love. It was so emotional and will be felt in your heart. It was an absolutely beautiful story.
A must read for small town romance readers!

This was actually 0 stars. I love a cowboy romance as much as the next gal but the misogyny in this book was insane. Holden exhibited so many red flag controlling behaviours and passed it all off as “love”, absolutely not. That man needed therapy to heal from his traumatic childhood, not Millie. I cringed from start to finish.

I'm not quite sure how I feel about this. Don't get me wrong, this wasn't a bad book by any means. I just have very mixed feelings about this series as a whole. I tend to really enjoy the heroines, the female friendships, and the overall direction of the plot in each installment. However, the heroes seem to consistently not work for me and I’m actually really sad about it.

Holden was easily my least favorite hero of the series to date. Especially given their history and the horrible way he treated Millie in the past, I found Holden’s possessiveness right at the start to be very off putting. I love a possessive hero, but I don't like when it feels more like the mmc views the fmc as a possession. Also, I hate when a mmc does something that directly goes against the wellbeing of the fmc (or when he does something that would 110% affect her but he doesn't consult her beforehand), and then he displays minimal remorse afterwards because he did what he thought was “right”. Speaking of remorse, I felt like he never really had to grovel for the actions that caused their initial split in the first place. I can understand that there was extenuating circumstances involved (Holden's dad was a disgusting piece of shit), but he choose to deliberately act in a way that was cruel and heartless. Lastly - I’m sure this will annoy some people, but I can’t post a review without acknowledging this…Holden gave me “Let’s Go Brandon” vibes right from the beginning and I was never able to shake that feeling or image. Sorry not sorry 🤷‍♀️

While this review may seem heavily critical, I truly didn't dislike this book. I thought Millie was a solid fmc overall and I liked how we continued to get the found family vibes. It was also nice that we finally got to see these two families bury the hatchet and end their longstanding feud. I mostly think I'm just not the intended audience for Kristen Proby's books. That being said - If you’ve liked any of Kristen Proby’s previous books, then I imagine you’ll like this one as well!

Kristen knows how to make my heart hurt with family dynamics in this series, but this one takes the cake. As in, I wanted to comfort myself by eating cake while listening to this. I’ve been seeing peeks of Holden and Millie’s story in the previous books, but I was not prepared for it. This has some major trigger warnings, including an abusive parent. And this book does an excellent job of showing the ramifications of that, even after they are gone. But there is a HEA, and these two deserve it so much!

❤️ Tropes ❤️
💋 Second Chance Romance
💋 Forbidden lovers (Juliet and Romeo of ranch life, basically)
💋 Cowboy Romance
💋 Small Town Romance

Holden is thankful his father finally passed away, but leave it to the guy to stick it to his kids in his will. His sisters got basically nothing, and he has one major stipulation to inherit the ranch. He has to get married quickly and stay that way for at least a year. There’s only one girl he can even think about doing this with, but she hates his guts. Ever since he was cruel and awful when he broke up with her. But he had to, for her sake. Not only are their families rivals, but their relationship was secret. But now that his father is gone, he is willing to do whatever it takes to get (and keep) his girl.

This reads like a story that was written 20 years ago, and that isn’t a compliment.

The covert and overt misogyny is rampant throughout, as is the whole “she’s not like others girls” trope. And I, at the end of the year 2024, am sick of this nonsense.

Unfortunately, this one missed the mark for me. I will say that Kristen Proby's books lack any real tension or yearning.

An arranged, second chance romance between two people from rival families... there was so much room for pining and tension, but everything was solved around the 40% mark. I'm a girlie who needs some tension, otherwise I lose interest rather quickly.

This book did set up another series pretty well and I'm intrigued enough to read more into Holden's sisters. But this one was definitely my least favourite of the series!

wanted to like this much more than I did

the constant “husband” and “wife” name calling was so annoying like you should be able to call them their name and not have the response be “that’s not my name” when they LITERALLY USE YOUR NAME

this is such a nitpicky thing but it was driving me crazy when reading

First Impressions
She's A Wild One is the finale in the "Wilds of Montana" series and I can't believe that we are at the end of this series because I am not ready to leave this family, although I haven't quite yet read the prequel novella so I will be reading that one very soon here. Kristen Proby wrote true perfection within this story though. I don't think I have loved a couple from this couple quite as much as these two. There was something about them that literally just hits different for you. I was so captivated because you expect something super angsty and while it had those elements we see so much happy couple page time that it literally swept me off my feet.

First Line
Its been the best fucking month of my life.

The Main Protagonists
The Hero: Haden Lexington
The Heroine: Millie Wild

Summary
Haden and Millie discovered a sweet love when they were young and life was fresh and new. But when Haden's father found out the truth about them being together, he forbid them being together or he would take final actions and threatened the lives of those that Haden found the most precious and would protect no matter the cost to himself. So he had to hurt his woman to save her. And now its been eight years, Millie still hates him and hasn't forgiven him for the pain he caused her. But when his father dies and there is an ultimatum in the will that he must marry to inherit what belongs to him and his sisters, he makes the final step and asking Millie to marry him with conditions, and surprisingly she agrees to their arrangement. Only the more time that they spend together, wounds are forced to heal as they confront the truth about themselves and discover a wild love that is worth fighting for.

What I Loved
Man my heart just became so consumed within this one here. I couldn't seem to get enough of it and I literally listened to this one in one sitting, that is how good it is. I absolutely adored everything that this author conveyed here. I also loved the premise of this story. Marriage of convenience in a contemporary western.....GIVE IT ALL TO ME haha and what a powerful story this turned out to me. I absolutely ADORED the main characters here. There actually wasn't anything that I even had issues with where they are concerned. Which surprised me because the heroines in this series there has been something that has just rubbed me the wrong way. But Millie is so relatable and just normal and isn't crazy and despite what Haden did to her, she isn't cruel to him. Even in the beginning I understand why she treated him the way that she did. And I have to tell you that my toes curles every single time he called her "wife", there was so much alpha goodness in this book I wanted to cry because contemporary just doesn't have that vibe as much as it used to unless its a morally grey hero so BRAVO to Kristen Proby for writing such an incredible story that melted my heart in every single way.

What I Struggled With
Nothing lol I mean I wasn't a fan of the dad and in how he treated Millie because you just love the parents all throughout the series, but I just couldn't understand why he treated his daughter, his baby girl, the way that he did and it was really so heartbreaking to watch how it was tearing apart the family.

Narration
POWERFUL! These two narrators are such the perfect options and I literally didn't want to put them down at all, just had me swooning all over the place and they really added the right levels of emotion at the right time.

Overall View
She's a Wild One is a poignant but heart wrenching romance that will explore unique facets of the human condition, of difficult circumstances and learning to rise above and find healing in ways you least expect to find it. A truly golden gem that melted my heart!

- Rival Families
- Enemies to Lovers
- Marriage of Convenience
- Second Chance Romance

- "My Wife"

Sometimes authors write books that soothe your soul. This author does that for me. I am absolutely obsessed with this series, and I loved Millie and Holden's story. They have a tense history-eight years ago, Holden broke Millie's heart, and now she can't stand him. Feeling like he had no choice and to keep her safe from his father, Holden pushed Millie away. Now his father is gone, and Holden is inheriting the ranch, but there is a catch. Per his father's will, Holden must get married. Who better to ask than the one who stole his heart all those years ago?

I loved everything about this story! Mille and Holden are meant to be together. They had amazing chemistry, and I loved their banter. Holden is all in, totally head over heels for Millie, and he did everything he could to show her and her family just how much. I loved how protective Holden was of Millie. They both had lots of past trauma and helped each other heal. Millie and Holden's rollercoaster romance broke my heart in many ways, but there were also heartwarming moments that made me smile. I love second-chance romance stories and enjoyed every moment of Millie and Holden finding their way back to each other.

Narration:
Grace Grant and Sebastian York did a fantastic job with this dual-style narration. They provided the perfect voices for Millie and Holden. Sebastian was the perfect cowboy, and Grace fully embodied all things Millie Wild. They really brought the characters to life. This audiobook was a treat, and I thoroughly enjoyed my listening experience.

I can't believe I've finished this series in literally just two days. Millie and Holden's romance was teased since book one, so I couldn't wait to see them get their happy ending. And boy, did these two deserve it. Holden's father was evil. Like, really, really evil. When he found out that Holden loved Millie eight years prior to when the story started, he said he'd kill her and one of Holden's sisters unless he stopped seeing Millie. So yeah, evil. When his father died, though, he left a stipulation that Holden had to marry in order to inherit the ranch, and Holden only ever wanted Millie. Millie's acceptance wasn't easy, but she felt really awful for Holden, so she accepted. And while Millie was of the mindset that it'd be just for the year, Holden was determined that it'd be for a lifetime.

I loved these two. Once they'd figured out the past, Millie was so protective of Holden, and Holden was the same with Millie. I loved his fierce love for her, and for his sisters who were basically his daughters, after his mother's death. And he worked overtime to fix all the damage he'd done to Millie, too, so that was nice. For her part, I loved how strong, confident, and kind Millie was. They both needed each other, and I loved seeing them find one another again. I gotta say, though, I really was disappointed in Millie's dad.

Overall, this was my favorite in this series. I love the Wilds so much. The setting is great, the family is wonderful, and all these characters are just so great. I'm gonna have a serious book hangover now, but these were some awesome small town contemporary cowboy romances!

YES. YES. YESSSSS. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

This was everything I wanted and more in the finale to the series!!

Holden, my god, that man 😩🫠 I’m obsessed with his hand necklaces. The fact that he did this to Millie every chance he got, regardless of where they were 😍 he just HAD to always have his hands on her. It was so hot. 🥵

The amount of times I laughed when Holden refused to answer Millie whenever she called him anything other than husband. 🤣

Holden and Millie are so perfect together, equally obsessed with each other. & that’s the kind of energy I love to see! Both were protective and possessive over each other, and they both secretly loved how obsessed the other was with them.

Their story involved a marriage of convenience along with a second chance to get things right, and Holden did not hold back. The minute they were married the man couldn’t wait to call her “wife” and he never let up. 🤭

This was the spiciest out of the whole series! I loved it. These two couldn’t get enough, like rabbits 😂

I had the audio for this, and holy smokes.. Sebastian York played Holden PERFECTLY. 🤩 Grace Grant was a new to me narrator and I really liked her performance. The audio is definitely worth picking up! It made the book that much more enjoyable. 🥰

I’m sad this series is over, but I’m so excited for what’s next with the Blackwell!! 💖

🤎 second chance
💍 marriage of convenience
🤎 rival families

That ending confrontation just put me down an emotional spiral

4.75 stars

At first I was a little disappointed because I thought Millie and Holden’s romance just rushed a little bit quicker than I wanted. Yes, they had the background of their past romance and separation for the past eight years for the conflict, but I thought that was going to be used in a way to create build up angst and tension between them as they went on this emotional journey as they engaged in this marriage of convenience. However things just moved right along, and it was almost too easy for them.

But once things got on track with them, it just went to a whole new level. The intimacy building was great. The amount of care taking was incredible. I loved all the affection that they had for one another. They just showed love that beyond special. I wound up really loving together. This was the text book case of what a soul mate romance should be.

Another phenomenal part of the book was the theme of family. In the context of the family feud it was one thing, but it was another about coming together and loving one another that really put it over the top. It was so heart warming and pure. There were quite a few really emotional moments that just brought tears to my eyes. It just added so much to the story by included. I loved it was in here.
