Trapped in her hotel by powerful magic, half-Navajo Stormwalker Janet Begay must find a way out in this novella from the author of Wild Wolf...
Running a little hotel in the southwestern town of Magellan, Janet is used to the occasional problem that requires a plumber or an electrician. But what begins with a leaky faucet in room number 6 leads to a terrifying warning: You are doomed.
Soon a powerful hex traps Janet in the hotel with her friends and her lover, Mick, a biker with the power to shift into a dragon—and the power to calm the raging storm magic inside her. After reading the whole series, I really think this should be 3.5 also. It is labeled 3.5 in some lists and 2.5 in others. It was published the same day in the Hexed anthology as book 3. It has characters that you understand better after 3 though. It definitely should be read before 4 and 5 as there is references to what happens and the bad guy shows up again. Definitely a good read.
This was a heck of a novella! There are very few authors who can pack so much into so few pages, and make you feel like you read a full novel, but Ms. Ashley does it and does it well.
This one begins with the faucets running with blood. I mean how else would one start a story? lol Janet's hotel is having problems with the plumbing, and her plumber Freemont is there to help. The only problem is that what's going on is supernatural, hence the blood.
Realizing very quickly that something big is happening, Janet and her friends try their hardest to figure out what it is, and how to fix it. But Janet is still struggling to control her Beneath magic, and twine it together with her Stormwalker magic. With several of her friends and the god Coyote now trapped in her hotel, that struggle becomes nearly impossible.
The figure out that they're hexed, and they think they know who did it, but so far, they're still stuck.
Untangling the hex isn't as easy as it should be for them, and each minute brings new challenges. With a storm rolling in, and all of her friends in danger, Janet isn't sure she's going to be able to get them out of this one.
This was an excellent addition to the series, and although you can read it as a stand-alone, I wouldn't suggest it. You won't be confused, but you'll be missing out on the richness of the world that Ms. Ashley has created.
You don't have to be a fan of Urban Fantasy to enjoy this series. It reminds me of how the Kate Daniels series is-where it's UF, but it's also Romance.
With so much packed into a novella, you'd expect the story to suffer, but instead it thrives. Ms. Ashley's talent for detail and storytelling shine through in this addition to the Stormwalker series.
Events in "Double Hexed" fall chronologically between Firewalker and Shadow Walker (As per author Newsletter 18th March 2014)

The story takes place within the hotel that Janet Begay owns and operates. It is about a Hex that forces all the main characters: Janet, Mick, Freemont, Maya, Pamela, Cassandra, Coyote, and Nash, to come up with a way to escape without killing each other. It starts with water turning into blood, and ends with a twist that you won’t see coming. I absolutely love Coyote's character. He is charming, snarky, and above all, wicked cool. And, yes, he is sex starved when it comes to Janet. Yes, I did use the term wicked cool. This story is actually pretty good. It has suspense, mystery and drama in that you don’t know if everyone will survive or not. I can't nor won't give it 5 stars because I don't much care for Nash and Mick and they both take away from the story with their stupidity. Nash, once again, is an idiot who can't see love that's right in front of his face. Mick, well Mick just wants to lure Janet to a Pacific Island and hold her hostage away from her evil goddess mother so that she doesn’t destroy the world with her Beneath and Stormwalker powers. Definitely one of those series that you want to read in order to make sure you don’t miss something like I have. No worries, I have the other two books in this series on hold currently at my library.
I was going to give this novella a 2 but then I realized that I really liked SOME of the characters despite the weird sex scenes and crass language. This is also my first paranormal romance so I'm not sure if this is as good as it gets in this genre or if it's really sub-par. I read it as part of a Hexed anthology. As one of the 5 books it was the best one so far. I do like that there is diversity - nightwalker, stormwalker, dragon, and other non-common entities - as well as Latino, Native American, and international characters. If it wasn't for the weird sex scenes I would be tempted to read some of the other books in this series. We will see.
Double Hexed (Stormwalker #2.5) by Allyson James (rating: 2.5/5, 23Sep2019) might have been more enjoyable if I’d read more of the main characters background. It is kind of a chaotic mess. A group of characters are trapped in a hotel by a curse that is working in concert with the hotel’s protective wards. The characters vacillate about how to overcome the problem without making it worse and seem to contradict themselves frequently about the possible solutions and potential ramifications. Finishing the story was a chore. The plot wasn’t terrible engaging and the writing wasn’t all that interesting. The humor wasn’t all that funny either. It might have proved more interesting if I had more of the series under my belt, but given the quality of this novella, I doubt I will waste more time with the series.
This was my introduction to the series, back in 2011. Without knowing the worldbuilding and characters I was intrigued by the choice of depicting only the characters' worst features. And the plot and pace pulled me to start the series. Rereading it in order gives it a different light. There is not much character growth but all of them become more rounded.- And the mistery is still rather intriguing. My review after first read in Hexed: here
It's a little 2 sm. But overall it was strange that she thought it was all about her past even though the mage said it wasn't. Why were they targeted if it was about the mage and the demon? It's like they got dragged into 4 no reason. But I was relived that coyote survived. I was surprised that Mick would b upset 4 killing coyote even when they r enemies of old... But it's good they worked it out and Ansel needs 2 b ok since he's always fighting his bad tendieces cause of being turned without him wanting it (not by his choice).
Audiobook - Narration, Hillary Huber. Really good. I just love her narration voice. She's just so enjoyable to listen to and she's become one of my favorites through this series.
Really enjoying this series more and more as I go through it. Shifters, Witches, Vampires - all the paranormal goodness
I haven’t previously read any of the books in this series and I’m pleased to discover that this story stands fairly well on its own. This is the living embodiment of Murphy’s Law. If it can possibly go wrong, it’s going to, and in the most spectacular manner possible. There’s enough intriguing little tidbits in this story that I will be going back to read what happened before.
This is my first exposure to this author and I think I will continue to follow the series. The characters are trapped inside a hotel. A hex prevented anyone leaving. Imagine being stuck in a hotel with diminished supplies and a hungry vampire. What would you do to survive and/or leave? This is just one issue to be addressed.
Okay read, Janet and friends are hexed, which traps them in Janet's hotel. No one can enter or leave, and the curse is bringing out the worst in everyone and Murphy's Law is running rampant. I wish I had read the other books in the series before I got to this one, I might have enjoyed it more.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I swear I will try and finish this series without being pissed. Does anyone fell like this is missing something? I love Mick still Though. Thats it 3.5
A great mix of magic and friendship and hexes in the supernatural world of Janet Begay, Stormwalker, and Mick, powerful dragon. So fun to read from my safe easy chair.
Novella About Janet and All Her Friends Trapped in Her Hotel by an Evil Spell
"That was my MIck. Forgiving me for turning into a crazy, murderous, insulting bitch who'd just tried to kill him. Times like these kept a relationship strong."
FINAL DECISION: A book that takes all the main characters from the series and traps them in the hotel, this book ups the drama and the angst from the main series. Everything is condensed to good effect.
THE STORY: Janet Begay is a half-Navajo, half-underworld goddess with the power to control storms. She also runs a hotel in the Southwest. When her hotel is hexed, Janet along with her friends are trapped in the hotel. Cassandra, a witch believes that her past has caught up with her and she is the reason the hotel has been hexed.
OPINION: I enjoyed this book because it has all the good aspects of a Stormwalker book but everything has been condensed. Janet's concerns about her powers, her love for her friends. The quirky personalities of the series cast of characters, the intense relationship between Janet and Mick, a weird paranormal mystery and serious action and danger. Sometimes novellas don't accurately represent the tone or pace of the series, but this one does very well.
WORTH MENTIONING: This novella has a full storyline with a lot of drama and angst for such a short story.
CONNECTED BOOKS: DOUBLE HEXED is book 2.5 of the Stormwawlkers series. It can be read as a standalone another many of the nuances of relationships between the characters will be lost without the background of the other books.
Previously published in the HEXED anthology. First of all, be aware that the main novella you're paying for ends at 79%! It's an entertaining story, if a bit short. It offers an interesting perspective to deepen our understanding of the cast of characters. The hex that traps them in Janet's hotel increasingly makes them act, not out of character, but upon the instincts each tries hard to control and suppress -- and almost everyone there is dangerous in their own way. Janet and the others have to cling to rationality and humanity, and decide what they are and are not willing to do (or at least condone), in order to get out of the trap alive. And some of their assumptions about who created it and why, and what defeating it entails, will be proven wrong.
