My Not-So-Super Blind Date

Rate this book
I’m Morgan Murray. You probably haven’t heard of me. With a raft of allergies and powers that won’t do more than charge a phone, I never lived up to my super family’s super expectations. It’s okay. I’m used to being overlooked.

But there’s only so much disappointment one man can take, and finding out the cute guy on my blind date is a henchman for the city’s most notorious crime boss? That’s one letdown too many. This date is over before it even starts.

Or is it?

In the meet cute that won’t end, Jasper and I are stuck in a time loop and the only way out is deadly. Good and evil may be relative terms, but if we can’t escape, we may find out that love is forever…and ever.

My Not-So-Super Blind Date is part of the Subpar Heroes multi-author MM romance series.

This was a cool premise: Morgan and Jasper are stuck on a groundhog-day-style first date. The story opens with Morgan on the date, and Jasper trying to convince him they've done this before. Morgan is starting to remember too, but Jasper has already been re-living this date for over 2 months.

Jasper is a reluctant henchman, and Morgan the child of a superhero with a useless power, a plethora of food allergies and a really bad attitude. It took me a long time to warm up to Morgan, and it was obvious from the beginning that there was more to Jasper than it seemed but Morgan refused to see him.

The plot left me guessing for a while which was fun, and I did mostly enjoy this. Morgan's death is what resets the time-loops and he dies in several inventive ways. Somewhere along the way though, he and I admit I found that contrary to the point of this whole series.

There are also a number of plot threads left hanging at the end of the story. Unsure if it's been left open so the author can write a sequel, but it seemed sloppy to me.

Not sure about this one. As soon as I read groundhog day I was already regretting picking this one up. Morgan wasn't a likable character, so struggled to get into the story. Things picked up toward the end. No epilogue. I felt sorry for Jasper, he went through a lot. Most of the time I was hoping he'd run for the hills.

My Not-So-Super Blind Date by Allison Temple was absolutely so much fun, I just couldn’t put this one down. It is part of the Subpar Heroes multi-author series and stands alone just fine. This is sort of a Groundhog Day*, time travel, superhero mashup and I was all here for it. It really takes a lot of finesse and balance to make a time loop story work. We need to see the events over and over to establish the sense of repetition and the frustration the characters are experiencing, but at the same time, not have it feel overly repetitious and frustrating for the reader. Temple really gets that balance just right, giving a clear sense of the “restart” these guys are experiencing and how it impacts their ability to solve this puzzle, without making it feel like we are reading the same thing over and over.

Overall, I just loved this book and was completely caught up in the journey. If you enjoy superhero or time travel stories, I think this one will have particular appeal, but I think this book will be a hit with lots of readers who enjoy appealing characters and a really clever story structure.

It really surprises me when a book can genuinely surprise me, and this one managed. Having our heroes having to solve a mystery while on a time loop is certainly a really interesting premise. I do wish Allison had tied some knots that were left untied in the final loop, but that is the only non positive I can point out. It does have enough space for a short story, which I wouldn't mind

This novel starts out a bit silly, but it gets progressively more serious and intense. While I usually dislike time travel stories, I really enjoyed this one. IMHO it needs a sequel, but not desperately. The ending was in keeping with the intent of the series but doesn't repeat events we already know. I'm glad I gave this one a try.

This book was so much better than I expected. It reminds me of the Supernatural Mystery Spot episode. IYKYK. I loved it. It kept me sucked in and I finished it in one sitting while at work. I absolutely fell I love with the characters too. I adore Jasper and Morgan and the bond they formed throughout this book. This book has significantly less heat than I usually read but I found that I didn't mind at all. There was just enough suspense and mystery to make this an intriguing story. I don't think I've read much, if anything, written by Allison Temple before but I greatly enjoyed this book.

This book is freaking fantastic! It’s a gay spin on Groundhog Day meets 50 First Dates with plenty of action, mystery, and an unlikely romance. It’s a giant superhero puzzle complete with time loops and evil villains, and I couldn’t put it down.

Morgan lost his mother two years ago, and to deal with his grief (read: avoid it), he throws himself into work. He and his stepfather plan to change the world with their invention, the Ziro Machine. Sounds like a noble, worthy cause for two people channeling their grief for the greater good, right?

Except something’s not right. For starters, Morgan’s on a blind date with Jasper in the one place that reminds him of his mother. A place he’s avoided because it brings all those feelings rushing to the surface. Again. And again. Because as he’s leaving their just okay date, Morgan dies and finds himself right back where it all began — waiting for his blind date.

I enjoy time travel and time jump stories, so I was enthralled by the time loop Morgan and Jasper are caught in. I loved watching them figure it out, even if there were a few times my brain cramped trying to keep all the details straight. Fortunately, Allison Temple does the heavy lifting by supplying those details in key moments, something I appreciated in this quick moving, constantly changing story.

As things warp and change, an amazing connection builds between Jasper and Morgan. It’s as if the more bizarre things get, the more they’re bound together until it clearly becomes a case of them against the world. Or at least one enormous super villain.

If every story in this series is this entertaining, sign me up for an all-access pass! I’m a sucker for a multi-author series, and this one features some of my favorites. I’m looking forward to what’s next!

My Not-So-Super Blind Date is a part of the multi-author Sub-Par Superheroes series. Each book can be read as a standalone but why not enjoy the whole series. This is the story of Morgan and Jasper. Morgan and Jasper are stuck in a time loop where their blind date is repeated over and over. This was a story full of twists, turns, and surprises. I enjoyed the story a lot. It was well written and quite unique. I wish there had been more at the end as I didn't get enough answers to my questions. I would definitely recommend the book.

This book was so much fun to read!
Imagine Groundhog Day, the movie where the MC relives the same day over and over again, but in this book our (subpar) hero, Morgan keeps dying at the end of the first date with Jasper. Some deaths are more painful and gruesome than others, and sometimes Morgan has to actively force his death to jump-start the day again when things go sideways (and they often do!).
Funny, action-packed, with a lot of twist and turns and great banter (prickly Morgan, again), this book was even better than I expected!

Who knew allergic reaction to fried pickles was a super power?

Living life in a day long loop with most things repeating without change makes the miniscule variables seem a lifetime long, but recovering from dying every same day but often in different ways prevents boredom, but can be habit forming.

If you have enough controlable energy to move around you can do almost anything to protect your family and friends from rogue evil spirits or even former medical student IT genius henchmen from themselves.

It is just there never is enough time to fill out all of the required reports when the same day starts again so soon.

Temple’s execution of the circular structure of the narrative, ala Groundhog Day, is just superb

Rating: 4.75🌈

I’m such a fan of the multi-author series because it’s a great way to find new writers or rediscover ones that you haven’t read in a while.

There’s been a huge variety in the series themes and authors who have decided to participate so it makes this format even more exciting.

The Subpar Heroes is a terrific theme, the not quite good enough hero, the one who has a power but it’s subpar, does strange stuff, is considered weak.

In the case of this book’s subpar hero character, Morgan Murray, he’s barely able to whip up enough of a current to charge his phone’s battery, but then he might actually start a fire.
He’s not a member of SPAM, that was his famous mother. He works in scientific research to save the world.

Then Morgan is matched by friends to go on a blind date with Jasper, who’s a henchman. And things get interesting. And scary. And maybe romantic. And they do them again and again and again. Over and over again.

The manner in which Temple builds the story, the surprise element of repeating the date, and then the slow revelation of how long it has been happening. Which one recounts the first time he knew what happened, it’s just chilling. And extremely well written.

It down to fantastic characters and a plot that both has to develop yet replicate itself.

Temple’s execution of the circular structure of the narrative, ala Groundhog Day, is just superb. When the date begins, and that’s the triggering point that starts the day again, is due to one factor. A person’s life is ended. Over and over. There’s a warning note at the very beginning of the book.

From there out, the narrative veers from the original, there’s character and relationship growth. The universe explores the present histories of these people and how they got there. Then the author takes us and them on another related journey.

It’s an incredible story, a heartfelt and at times, heartbreaking book. I really wanted more at the end. But then again, maybe just that was probably perfectly fine. A full future ahead.

This is one of the best of this series to date. I’m definitely recommending it.

This book was so good and a fantastic ground-hog-day-like story until the very end. Unfortunately, I wanted to throw my e-reader across the room when it ended. Before I continue, I want to say that I'm still giving this book 4 stars because the writing was great, the story super engaging and, IMHO, original.

I'm one of those readers and movie watchers that hate it when there is no complete resolution to a story. Unlike some books, this one doesn't have a cliffhanger (thank you very much) but I was disappointed that the romance didn't have (at least not to me) a satisfactory conclusion. There were simply too many unanswered questions and I don't enjoy having to imagine how things wind up; I want the author to do that for me. YMMV An epilogue to tidy up a few things would have been so appreciated.

The book is written in first-person POV, told from Morgan's viewpoint. The story was full of surprises and each iteration of their meet-cute felt like a brand-new one so it didn't wear me out reading the same thing over and over again with only minor changes. So, in conclusion, I'm not sorry that I read this book, I just wish it had ended differently.

An advanced copy of this book was provided to me at my request; my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.

I have a weakness for superhero stories, and this one hit all the right spots. I loved Morgan and Jasper’s resetting first blind date, and how the truth behind their reliving the same day slowly unfolds.

I love how Morgan and Jasper get to know each other through their numerous first dates, and how their relationship deepens as they try to figure out what’s going on. I liked the consequences of the resetting and the different way it affected Jasper. I love the line about him “henching”.

Although the story starts with a fun concept, I loved how it soon becomes much more serious, and deals with loss, and expectations, especially with a parent who is a superhero.

I love how SPAM and April figure into this book, and how Morgan comes into his own with his power. I figured out the twist of who the bad guy was, but not the details, which I liked, as it gave depth to them and their actions, although didn’t excuse them.

The supporting cast make this world seem more real, and I particularly loved Vee, and Jasper’s family.

The only niggle I had with the book was the ending – I had to reread several times to figure out what exactly was going on, but that didn’t take away from my enjoyment or rating.

4.25/5 This is a wild ride! Groundhog Day is one of my favourite movies, so I had high expectations here, and they were met! Definitely more violence here (although most things fix themselves, given the nature of a time loop), so heed the content warnings.

I really enjoyed the slowly unravelling mystery of what was going on with the time loop—and what was going on between Morgan and Jasper. There were lots of surprises and fun (and sad and emotional and shocking moments, etc., etc.) I thought it was a very believable arc of scarcely knowing or liking one another to coming to mean a lot to one another under pretty wild circumstances.

I liked how dedicated Morgan and Jasper both were to doing the right thing in their own way, and how their understanding of what that meant changed throughout the book. It definitely felt like they forged an unbreakable connection.

I wish we got to spend more time after the climax learning a bit more about the consequences and the future, as I still have questions! (An epilogue would have been awesome.) But I’m definitely hopeful for these two, and they earned their HEA a million times over.

This is a fun romantic mystery à la Groundhog Day; the MCs find themselves repeating the same bad blind date over and over again. They don't know how many days they've repeated or why this is happening, so once Morgan begins to remember Jasper, they head off together to figure out how to stop the time loop. It seems to be dependent on Morgan's death each time. I enjoyed the subtle change in their relationship every time they restart the date. Jasper remembers more of the dates, so he has had more time to get to know Morgan. Morgan is the son of a deceased superhero. He himself is a subpar hero who has never been able to develop his power.  He has been living with his stepfather since his mother's death, and they've been building a machine to save the world. The steps towards the mystery resolution are logical, but the time loop issues and science sometimes cause confusion. None of that matters to me, I was really entertained by the book and could not stop reading it. I liked the writing, the suspense, the humour, the world building and the originality.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

A time loop romance is a huge risk. There's the danger it will feel repetitive after just a few chapters, but this book didn't feel repetitive to me. Yes, Morgan kept dying, but every time was different. Every reset felt different because we got more clues about what was happening, and what led to Morgan and Jasper being trapped in the loop. And every time they reset, I wanted to see more of the boys together. Jasper had so much more time than Morgan did to fall in love with him, but once Morgan stopped being so judgmental he fell for Jasper faster. And they're genuinely so cute together! I only pieced together part of the end twist.

This book is a lesson for me to not judge books by their covers. I normally would skip a book like this because the cover is cheesy, to me. I'm really not into model covers either. I picked it up because I love Alli Temple's Afterlife Inc. books, and I'm so glad I did. This book was so fun to read. It's fast paced, and not too long. I would have read it in one sitting if I didn't have a weird work schedule.

This was great. I can always rely on Allison Temple to write characters that I care about, and I cared so much for Jasper and Morgan.

Told solely from Morgan's pov, details are revealed to the reader as Morgan learns them, so his realisations are ours.

Despite death being an overriding factor in this story it's quite light and amusing for the first 50%. Then bam, something happens at around 55% that started me crying big ugly tears and the author gave me little to no reason to stop until nearly the end of the book.

Honestly after being put through the wringer I'd have liked abit more time with the boys brfore the end. It all felt too abrupt. An epilogue would have been good. Something to explain what could be explained, as there felt like there were a few loose ends. Also something that showed what their new 'normal' would be.

Despite my misgivings over the abruptness of the end I'd highly recommend this book.

This was a tense, engaging story that drags the reader into a high-stakes groundhog-day kind of time loop - loner science nerd Morgan is on a blind date with Jasper, where each loop ends and restarts with Morgan's death. At first, despite Jasper trying to persuade him they've done all this before, he begins each date in a restaurant under the portrait of his dead hero mother with a fresh perspective. But soon, he too begins to remember day layered on day, and death on death. Both men are desperate to get out of the loop and figure out who or what is responsible, and despite Morgan idolizing his superhero mom, and Jasper being a (reluctant) henchman for a villain, they come to trust and depend on each other.

This is a less rom-com and more emotional adventure story for this series. Technology and superpowers meet in an imaginative mix, with a solid HFN, although a few open threads remain. I love how different every book in this series had been.

Interesting Story!

This book was a lot of fun to read! Once I started to realize what was happening, I was turning pages quickly as things started to unfold. What an interesting and unique story. The author did a fantastic job of making something that could be very complicated easy to follow and enjoy. I was on the run with Jasper and Morgan as the start of each repeated day brought more clues and brought them closer together. They were both great characters and it was definitely a fun ride! I needed another chapter or an epilogue though to explain a few more things and give us a glimpse of their life together after everything was resolved. But overall, this was an enjoyable read!

a bit of a surprise, but a good read

This is the first book in this series that I’ve read. I liked the premise: underpowered son of a superhero goes on a blind date with an “evil” henchman. I also thought it was clever to start with the POV of someone who didn’t know they were in a time loop.

I was expecting a romantic comedy, but this story goes into depth with a lot of the character’s motivations and there repercussions that leave the “wacky” premise behind about 30%of the way into the story.
It’s a well-plotted, clever, twisty sci-fi mystery that centers around many different kinds of love that can drive you in directions you could never anticipate.

This was a sweet, cute and fun read all rolled together. I really liked Jasper and Morgan. I enjoyed them getting to know each other through the book and the connection and bond they formed. The suspense and mystery in the story kept me intrigued through the unlikely romance that unfolded. Their story is set in a time loop, or a Groundhogs Day (movie) if you will. Time travel doesn’t always work for me as a reader, but I thought it was done well with key explanations, and it worked for the story. I’m excited to see what other stories this multi author series brings!

So much fun

This was such a fun book. I really enjoyed the time loop element of this fast paced story. Unbeknownst to Morgan, he has been on the same blind date too many times to count. But something finally changed and he was able to remember Jasper more and more as each date repeats. But why them? Who could be behind the time loop? And what's up with the reappearance of a super villain thought to be dead? You'll have to read to find out! This was my first Allison Temple book and definitely won't be my last.

Unique superhero-esque romance

At times I’m not completely sure I was following what in the world was going on, but that’s probably a me problem and not a book problem. And I can’t say that I wasn’t engaged with the story despite that. It’s a little bit intense I feel because of the repeated deaths (lol) and death is one of those things that isn’t supposed to happen in romance novels. But here it was kind of important to the story line but I was also a bit nervous how it would all turn out. There is a HEA of course.

My Not-So-Super Blind Date starts right in on the shenanigans of a time loop and only gets darker from there. Unfortunately, the fast pace doesn't leave much time for developing any sort of affection for either character and there was little chemistry between Morgan and Jasper.

That being said, I couldn't put the book down until I found out who had caused the time loop and why. There was a lot to the mystery and the time loop really makes the reveal come piecewise. It left me guessing and by the end I did find myself wanting a happy ending for both of them.

Morgan & Jasper

Excellent time loop story about two guys that couldn’t be more different but are stuck together trying to figure a whole bunch of mysteries and get out of the loop they’re in without dying, again. Morgan is always up for a fight and doesn’t give Jasper much until he realizes they need to be a team. Don’t want to give anything away so I’ll stop there. I really could use more of these two, hopefully I’ll get it.

Oh wow. Just wow. This was….awesome! I was not expecting this one at all. I loved it! Morgan and Jasper are stuck in a time loop with their blind date but by the end, it isn’t such a blind date anymore. This story was full of surprises and plot twists and kept me guessing right up to the end.

I'm amazed! Completely blown away. This super book was so much more than anything I anticipated. It captivated me!

Morgan and Jasper find themselves in a time loop during their blind date, but by the conclusion, it's anything but blind. The story was chock full of unexpected twists and turns, keeping me on edge until the very last moment.

A super addition to a super series!!!

Morgan & Jasper

This is another fun addition to this multi-author series. Morgan and Jasper are stuck in a sort of Groundhog's Day situation in which some do overs can get very harsh. It was entertaining to read along as they figure out what is really going on.

I received an ARC and this is my unbiased opinion

Wow.

What a ride. I thought I story in a time loop would be boring, but nope. I did guess early on who the culprit was, but not the way it transpired. That was a really good twist. A couple of inconsistencies (or maybe I'm just confused on a couple of things) but all in all a great story.

this was so charming

As I started the book I wasn’t quite sure how I would feel about it, and was very pleasantly surprised at how much depth and world building occurs. The romance is lovely and the premise is so interesting would suggest to others!
