“The thing is, God can’t be explained. He must be experienced.”
I was completely blown away by DiAnn Mills’ exploration into why people explode into violent actions and if they are wired from birth with a propensity to commit unthinkable crimes.
Mills’ main characters, a hostage negotiator, Carrington Reed, and a journalist, Levi Ehrlich, play off each other extremely well, allowing readers greater insights into their characters. It doesn’t take long for readers to see that the negotiator and journalistic careers lent themselves to distrust. It’s the breaking down of this wall that keeps readers interested in these two characters, hoping that they’ll eventually find comfort in each other.
Mills’ examination of what happens when we allow fear and anger to take root and grow, is stellar. She shows that everyone at the scene, from the hostages to the media, has allowed their various stages of stress to cause them to seize desperate measures. There’s a warning in that for us.
I appreciated a reminder that we learn so much about ourselves and humanity by reaching out to others in times of need. Mills points out that we can do an effective job of helping others tear down “walls of sin’s devastation” and help them find hope if we are fully restored to God. What a beautiful thought that we can be restored when we reach out to help another.
My highlighter was busy and I was continually in awe of how Mills expresses herself. “Kaleidoscope of considerations bannering across my mind” - just one of the many I noted!
I appreciated learning about the differences between Orthodox and Messianic Judaism, the fine line between revenge and justice, and between pain and purpose.
I really hope this new-to-me author, DiAnn Mills, hasn’t finished with the Outlier and her sidekick as I’m eager for more!
I was gifted this copy by Tyndale House Publishers and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
Talk about a WILD ride! My first DiAnn Mills book and will NOT be my last! This had everything you want in a good romantic suspense. Great balance of romance and suspense in my opinion. Characters you connect with, faith content you love to see and it's quite the page turner. DiAnn's writing is wonderful and I highly recommend you check this book out if you love a good romantic suspense story.
In this one, we follow Carrington and Levi. Carrington is a hostage negotiator and Levi is an investigative reporter. They are both on the scene of 15 hostages being held by the Kendrix brothers in an abandoned house in South Texas. The brothers are armed and dangerous and refusing to let them go. Things start off from here as we have this great story that keeps you connected, invested and needing to know all the twists and turns Carrington and Levi take along the way.
The romance depicted in this book was developed and layered - they really communicated well and didn't rush through things since there was so much going on. We have so much backstories too between the two and I loved learning about them along the way, from Levi's family issues due to his faith and Carrington's guilt and health journey - so much depth with these characters! Levi's faith was also encouraging and seeing him talk to Carrington about it was beautiful - especially how everything wrapped up for her faith journey in the end. I loved the dual POV between Levi and Carrington too, I think it really added to the story.
The pacing was perfection in this book and DiAnn really keeps you engaged! I cannot recommend it enough! I think it's safe to say, I'll be reading all of DiAnn's books I can going forward!
Thank you to Tyndale House Publishers for a copy of the book to honestly read and review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Wow! Lethal Standoff grabbed me from the first page and kept me up until 2 a.m. I had to know what happened next! When I came to the last page, I didn’t want it to end. Mills created two great characters in Carrington Reed and Levi Erlich, and I didn’t want to leave them.
I loved that Levi was a Messianic Jew, which added an extra layer to his character. This gave him a very believable conflict in his personal life when his family shunned him, even had a funeral. Mills did a great job with this.
Carrington struggled to let people get close to her because she felt it was her fault that her parents died when she was eight. Her grandmother who raised her died when she was a senior in high school, and she decided she didn’t want to go through the pain of losing a loved one again. This created a huge obstacle to love.
Just about the time I thought I had the bad guy figured out, there would be another twist in the story–that’s what kept me reading until the wee hours of the morning! This is a story romantic suspense readers will love and hate to see end.
There is so much going on in this ingeniously, plotted, tense story. What starts out as a hostage situation turns into an investigation into a murder and so much more. Private negotiator, Carrington is in the thick of a deadly standoff but when it is over, she has to make sure the victims gets the care they need. Journalist, Levi began covering a story, but like Carrington becomes personally involved, they put their heads together, totally getting that they are not qualified investigators, but circumstances put them in the middle of the confounding aftermath. I liked the alternating viewpoints of Carrington and Levi. It was interesting to get into their heads. Carrington is battling her own demons and learns to trust God. Levi is a messianic Jew, and that aspect was very well explained. “We are a dangerous pair. Curiosity and compassion. Always in trouble.” And as they share danger, the romance blooms. The layered twists and turns had me quickly, turning pages in the villain, was a total surprise. The romance was paced just right and the faith element brightly shown. “The future wore a mask, but the One in charge held it in his hand. I knew it. I felt it. I believed it.” * I received a complementary copy of this book from Tyndall on behalf of the author through PICT tours and via NetGalley. I was not required to post a favorable review. All opinions are my own.*
I really liked the mystery and it had me guessing til the end, and I did enjoy the book as a whole. Some parts were a little hard to follow, but it did wrap up nicely in the end.
I really liked learning and delving deeper into what a hostage negotiator does. It's actually one of my favorite fields to learn about in the criminal job field. I think the author did a great job with the character and her career.
This book for me personally was hard. As someone who struggles with severe eye issues I almost put it down, because the main character also went through something similar.
“I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.”
Lethal Standoff has everything I look for in a great novel! Alongside a heartwarming romance, the plot and themes of this page-turner are pulled from current events and offer a hopeful, triumphant message for readers. Highly recommended.
When Carrington Reed is called to an old house to negotiate the rescue of a bunch of migrant hostages, she has no idea that this assignment will change her life. Suspecting that she has a melanoma of the eye, something that both her father and grandmother died with, she focuses on emotionally touching Will Kendrix, one of a pair of brothers who is holding the hostages. His demand? Find out who murdered his father before 5:00 in the morning.
Levi Ehrlich has covered stories around the world, but several times he's covered negotiations by Carrington Reed. She intrigues him. With threats from his boss to cover the story of the hostages with the political slant their employer will want, Levi gets drawn into the negotiation and into an attempt to rescue when Will starts shooting. As a messianic Jew whose family has rejected him, Levi feels a deep compassion for Will's wife and kids.
Carrington and Levi are two of the most fascinating characters I've read about in a while. Carrington carries both the fear of the melanoma and guilt from her parents' death. Levi's messianic Judaism draws me in. He bears the pain of the estrangement with his parents while appreciating God's deliverance of him from the drugs that were destroying him.
My only problem with the story, and the problem may be with me rather than the story, is that I don't understand Will's motivation in taking captive the hostages. It is not the motivation he professes, but I never found an explanation that makes sense. The further the story progresses the less I understand his motives.
However, it is a fast-paced, absorbing story with unique characters and an ending that caught me by surprise.
"God does hear. He cares. The one thing I feel in my bones is His love.”
@diannmillsauthor has written a spellbinding novel that kept me captive into the late night hours. The story begins with a volatile hostage situation with the heroine, Carrington negotiating for the release of undocumented immigrants. While the hero, Levi is covering the story for his publisher.
I loved that the story is in first person with both the main characters. As a reader, I really enjoy knowing what is going on in their minds. I found both their backstories intriguing. The author put the two through the proverbial wringer and had me flying through the pages. There were so many plots and twists. My mind was blown when the bad guy was revealed. This book hit my romantic suspense sweet spot. I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend to all my suspense reader friends. I got an advanced reader copy from the publisher and this is my honest opinion. You can pre-order order at any retail site you prefer. #amreading #christiansuspensenovel #bookstagrammer #bookstagram #romanticsuspense #romanticsuspensebook
Do not be afraid of sudden terror or of the ruin of the wicked, when it comes, for the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught.
Prov. 3:25-26 This is the verse that came to mind as I prayed about a Scripture connection. Both protagonists are working in dangerous, high-stakes professions and act courageously. While one character is coming from a place of trust, the other grows to trust the Lord.
Spiritual Themes
The bottom line is truth and love go hand in hand. You can’t have one without the other. Because Jesus is both truth and love.
p. 231 This quotation is from a longer passage, which I would consider to be the richest in the book, which explores the meanings of truth and love.
This is the most explicit statement of my favorite theme in the book, which also comes through narratively. The male lead, Levi, is a reporter who strives to convey truth, regardless of whether that truth aligns with his publisher’s agenda. And his desire for truth is fueled by a love of and concern for others.
The passage also ties in very well, thematically, with the mystery plot… (That’s all I’ll say, to avoid spoilers.)
What I Liked
As I’ve mentioned in past reviews, I occasionally find myself checking out when it’s time to read about the male protagonist, in stories. While this is usually the case in romances, and less so in romantic suspense, I found the male protagonist in Lethal Standoff to be especially engaging. He’s an interesting character, because he’s a Messianic Jew, as well as a reporter.
Although my background is different from Levi’s, I would describe myself as Messianic. I really, really liked reading about Carrington’s experience attending a Shabbat service and how the Lord deeply used this experience, for her. I didn’t grow up Messianic, but, as my mom began to introduce me to Jewish customs and teachings, I also encountered Jesus in a different way. This was especially true for me in terms of understanding communion.
And, I really liked that Levi was a reporter– not because it is an interesting profession, but because the author used this to delve into the idea of bias in the news. In today’s cultural moment, it is so challenging to find news that is accurately reporting events, so I really liked seeing how Levi wrangled with this, and how the pressure affected his ability to do a good job.
Levi wasn’t seeking to forward an agenda, but the truth, regardless of which “side” it fell on. I also feel that Mills did a good job of presenting a balanced narrative, in terms of treating innocent characters with compassion– without relying on assumption. It was also neat to read from the perspective of the reporter, rather than just hearing from frustrated people who were having negative experiences reading, or being represented in, the news.
Carrington struggles to trust people, and I feel that this element is portrayed realistically. In particular, I appreciated that she takes ownership of her “triggers,” not only in terms of recognizing them but also in terms of taking responsibility for how she responds when triggered.
I also like that both Carrington and Levi demonstrate compassion towards those they’re working with. They go far beyond professional expectations as they continue reaching out to those who have been harmed.
The pacing of the mystery is excellent. Clues are teased out gradually, contributing to a well-textured, puzzling plotline. My theories shifted throughout the reading.
Content Notes
Early on in the book, Levi’s narrative references the Bible verse about being ashamed of Yeshua, as he considers interaction with his very opposed family. He goes on to talk about eternity with Yeshua. I’m flagging this as a content note because I’m resistant to fear/guilt tactics. Thankfully, this does not turn into a main theme, in the book.
There are some physical descriptions, which I especially noticed in Carrington’s observations of Levi. One description uses the phrase “just tempting” to describe his physique, after an acknowledgment that he’s “not over the top muscular” (p. 137).
The word “crip” is used teasingly, which I did not appreciate.
Respectful Discussion
Levi develops feelings for Carrington and begins pursuing her when Carrington isn’t walking with the Lord. While I was glad to see Carrington gradually develop faith as she begins to recognize through Lord’s presence, I felt uncomfortable with the unequal yoking. Honestly, at points, I felt that the romance element took away from the story. I found myself wanting to get through a romantic/relational scene and back to the action.
I’d also like to mention that Lethal Standoff touches on some very harsh, contemporary events in terms of crimes being committed. While I did have some concerns about this material being used sensationally, I feel that the pairing of these events with a journalistic perspective brings awareness to important– and awful– issues of our time.
Recommendation Status
Well-paced and suspenseful, Lethal Standoff is a multi-layered mystery that offers a timely exploration of today’s journalistic climate. Reader discretion recommended due to the unequal yoking, and because of the content noted above.
Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of the book from the publisher. Opinions expressed are my own.
“From the looks of you two, the other side is winning…” That line was a total crack up. While this hostage negotiation story wasn’t big in the comedy department, I will say that the author DiAnn Mills put Carrington and Levi through the ringer.
I worried that the author backed herself into a corner since the story was about a hostage scenario and suspected it would only need a few scenes or that i wouldn’t connect with the story if there were too many days in the life of a negotiator. But this book didn’t disappoint. There is so much that goes on during the aftermath.
The author did a great job at tugging emotions that I even felt sorry for Williams Kindrix, the man who abducted a slew of people, old and young. Like I said before, having the hero and heroin go through so much really took the story to another level. Carrington and Levi came to life with every effort they took to piece together Will’s motives and help his family.
And woah. I was not even in the right ballpark when it came to who the real enemy was. Man makes plans but God’s will is perfect, and the author incorporated a great move to tie the story together all involved with the last intense moment. That might sound vague, but I wont spoil the ending.
Thank you DiAnn Mills for great story and an awesome, inspiring message.
I received this book through Net Galley and was not required to give a positive review.
The title and cover may lead readers to assume the protagonists are in law enforcement, but the heroine is a private hostage negotiator, and the hero is an investigative journalist. Acquainted through previous cases, one situation impacts them profoundly and they are drawn into finding justice for the Kendrix family.
I expected this to be a fast-paced plot, and it was. But I was surprised by the amount of medical injuries/crises, the storyline about severed relationships due to spiritual beliefs, and the depth of the family secrets and betrayals. At times, I wasn't sure who to trust, and that ratcheted up the tension and made the pages fly by.
However, the romantic connection between the hero and heroine didn't feel realistic and was more "tell" than "show." I was worried the immigration plotline would become political, and I'm confident the author's political beliefs are completely opposed to mine, but she managed to keep the topic relatively balanced.
Thank you to Tyndale Fiction for the complimentary copy of this novel; all opinions are my own.
"Pain can be a beautiful thing if we allow it to work miracles in our lives."
Every time I read a DiAnn Mills book, I am completely blown away. It's been a little while since I've read one and this book hit the spot. I loved Carrington and Levi's first person voices that allowed me to really get into their hearts and minds and, of course, I absolutely loved the intense psychological suspense that's the backbone of the story. Carrington's profession as a private hostage negotiator was a fascinating one to learn about, and Levi's struggle with his family after converting to Messianic Judaism was heart-breaking. Carrington and Levi's straight-forward relationship that went from work to friendship to more was quite delightful. Their shared commitment to justice and truth was incredible and their faith journey, individually and together, was remarkable. Plenty of plot twists will have you gripping the edge of your favorite reading chair. The author does address a volatile topic of border crossing but does it with sensitivity and a focus on humanity.
If you enjoy romantic suspense, this book is a must read with its intricate plot, complex characters, and compelling faith thread. I received a complimentary copy courtesy of Tyndale House Publishers via JustRead Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.
Something I have always enjoyed about this author's books is how they address real-life issues in the news and intertwine them with caring, compassionate characters.
This story is told from two perspectives: Carrington Reed, a hostage negotiator, and Levi Ehrlich, a local reporter. Each brings strengths, weaknesses, and even some emotional baggage to the story. Their interplay has an undertone of something more than friendship, at least from Levi's perspective and perhaps Carrington's, too.
The crux of this story is a fast-paced journey to uncover the truth about a murder, hostage situation, and family issues. In addition, with Carrington's health issues, the reader will not experience many lulls in this novel. While Levi and Carrington have personal problems to work through, their joint determination to uncover the truth forges a relationship that is hard to break.
I appreciate the scenarios in this novel that relate to what we experience in our own lives, such as unethical journalism, trauma, grief, and family drama. There is even a religious struggle for Levi. I can't imagine parents declaring their child "dead" just because they chose to believe a different way. Carrington also struggles with faith, believing that her prayers are never answered. For anyone who has dealt with faith issues, we know that prayers are not always answered how we want. We must have faith, and this is hard for Carrington.
This novel is engaging, and I, along with Carrington and Levi, looked for clues to uncover the truth of the situation. Many rushed to judgment, but the truth won out in the end.
If you are seeking an engaging romantic suspense novel, I recommend this book (or any by this author), and we give it five paws up!
From the blurb - Hostage negotiator Carrington Reed is called to the scene when reports come in that fifteen hostages are being held by the Kendrix brothers in an abandoned house in south Texas. Working closely with Levi Ehrlich, a handsome investigative reporter who has covered some of Carrington’s negotiations in the past, she finds herself being undeniably drawn to him.
I am not a fan of first-person books, but persevered through. I found the beginning interesting, but have to say that I lost interest once the hostage situation was resolved. This has never been the case with this author's books previously. It could just be because the ARC was so badly edited; I had difficulty with who was the narrator and who was doing the dialog, when each person's sentences were on the same line. I may request it from the library and try again. I did find the information about the Messianic church very interesting. I had just assumed that when a Jewish person converted that he or she would then attend a Christian church. I did know about shunning. Learning who the villain was came as quite a surprise. I received a complimentary copy from Net Galley of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Another great book by Diann Mills with a lot of twists and turns and surprises. A negotiator and a journalist team up to solve a crime and fall in love. It was interesting to read about Messianic Jews also. This book also had a very satisfying end. I received a copy of this book from Netgalley, however all opinions are my own.
This novel had so much packed into it, and I really enjoyed Carrington's character and career. It was a different kind of thriller read. A hostage negotiator, Carrington gets a call that will change everything in her career. Two brothers have taken fifteen hostages and are demanding in order for them to be released, they want their father's murder solved and the clock is ticking. Putting everything on the line, Carrington allows a reporter behind the lines with her while she works with the brothers to keep things calm while directing others to start digging into the death of their father. Things quickly escalate as they often do with someone who is erratic and Carrington and Levi find themselves in the middle of gun fire. They are running out of time and patience is wearing thin. The closer it gets to the time limit they were given, the more Carrington knows this goes way beyond just hostages and their fathers death. Many more are entangled in this web of crimes and their father had a long list of enemies. The two are now invested in this case and as they put their lives on the line to get to the bottom of everything, someone is bound to try and keep things secret. Will they be able to solve all this entails and will Levi keep his word to Carrington of what will and will not be released to the media about all that has happened and is going on? I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
When Carrington is called to a hostage situation, she gets more than she'd bargained for - a close-up view of a tragic situation which she doesn't feel like she can walk away from, and a close tie to a man she would like to know better, if only her life permitted it. And as they try to make sense of what happened and uncover a murderer, it gradually becomes clear that Carrington and Levi may have bitten off more than they can chew. Will they be able to work out who's responsible for everything before one or both of them - or others - end up dead? And if they survive, will this case bring them together, or drive them apart permanently?
This was the first book I've read by the author, and I really wanted to love it. Unfortunately, while I finished it, I doubt I would have if I hadn't agreed to review. The story itself wasn't bad, but the writing just wasn't my cup of tea. Too many of the conversations felt fragmented and even the narrative on a sentence-to-sentence basis didn't feel like it flowed. I was also left wondering at times whether the author was a psychologist or similar, because some bits were somewhat textbook-esque. In terms of the story, it kept me guessing but came together neatly at the end, which was good. All in all, I won't be reading books by this author again because I don't think they're for me - but others may love them.
Note that I received a complimentary copy of the book from NetGalley. I was not required to write a positive review and this is my considered opinion of the book.
LETHAL STANDOFF might just be DiAnn Mills’ best book, yet. (Of course, the next one could be my most favorite.) In LETHAL STANDOFF, we have the thriller within a mystery within another thriller. Or as Benoit Blanc postulated, “A donut hole in a donut hole with its own donut hole . . .” (Knives Out, 2019) Couldn’t put this book down!
THE STORY: Hostage negotiator Carrington Reed is called to the scene where fifteen hostages are being held by the Kendrix brothers in an abandoned house in south Texas. When she arrives on site, Carrington quickly learns that the brothers are armed and refuse to release their victims, a group of undocumented immigrants, until the local police identify their father’s murderer. Working closely with Levi Ehrlich, a handsome investigative reporter who has covered some of Carrington’s negotiations in the past, she finds herself being undeniably drawn to him. Carrington digs deeper into the death of the Kendrixes’ father and notices that some details surrounding his death aren’t adding up. As Carrington investigates the brothers’ claims and tries to piece together their motive for taking innocent people captive, it soon becomes clear that they are trying to hide something and that revenge for their father’s death may not be what they’re really bargaining for after all. To protect the hostages and ensure the brothers don’t carry out the rest of their sinister plot, Carrington must get to the bottom of one family’s secret and the truth they’re trying so hard to hide before time runs out.
As I said, I couldn’t put this book down. Mills is wonderful at crafting plausible surprises and amazing endings. Plus, on a personal note, I loved the story arc of Levi Erlich, a Messianic Jew who is walking out his faith in his Messiah while his family treats him as dead. Thank you, DiAnn! Thank you, Tyndale.
Highly recommended to readers of high suspense and action, thrillers, mysteries, clean romance, Messianic characters, and keep-turning-the-pages reads.
I received an ARC from the publisher for my honest review.
The characters in Lethal Standoff are well-developed and compelling. Levi Ehrlich, a Messianic Jew, adds a unique twist to the story. I found his faith journey fascinating, especially the sacrifices he made along the way. His deep convictions and the challenges he faces truly enriched the narrative.
Carrington Reed is equally captivating as a hostage negotiator grappling with her faith and a life-altering medical prognosis. Her profession demands close ties with those she helps, and this connection drives her determination even amidst personal turmoil.
In the aftermath of a deadly hostage situation, both Carrington and Levi are united by their quest for truth. Their shared sense of justice and unyielding integrity propel them forward, despite the dangers lurking at every turn.
The action is gripping, with intense moments and clever misdirection that keeps you guessing the true villain’s identity. As the story unfolds, it delves deep into themes of evil, greed, and the redemptive power of God’s love, justice, and integrity.
One aspect of the book's description left me questioning a particular plot point. While I won’t spoil anything, I found myself wondering about the reasoning behind it. That said, Lethal Standoff is a great read, full of suspense and meaningful faith elements.
This was my 2nd book by DiAnn Mills, and I can say I'm a fan.
Hostage negotiator Carrington Reed is called to a situation where two brothers have taken 15 undocumented immigrants hostage. They're holed up in an abandoned house in South Texas armed and not willing to let anyone go until their father's murderer is captured and brought to justice. When investigative reporter Levi Ehrlich shows up on the scene hoping to get an exclusive story, he finds himself helping Carrington and the hostages. As the two dig deeper into the why, things start to heat up. They soon start to uncover family secrets that put their lives in jeopardy. Can Carrington and Levi make it out alive?
Told in the POV of Carrington and Levi, this book was action-packed and entertaining. There were some slow parts, but the mystery and suspense definitely had me turning pages. I had no idea who was behind all the chaos, and I was most completely shocked by the turn of events. The romance between Carrington and Levi was charming, but there were times I wanted to smack some sense into Carrington, lol😂 This was an engaging read, and I really enjoyed it. If you're looking for a clean romantic suspense, I would most definitely recommend this one.
Wow! DiAnn Mills has once again surprised me with an amazing story full of twists and turns. I finished this story quickly because I could not wait to find out the true story behind the mystery.
Lethal Standoff is a story that explores what it means to truly find justice. At what points family secrets become harmful to those around us and how much they damage a community. It's the story of two individuals who must learn to trust each other in order to get to the bottom of things. And they must learn to lean on God to provide for them both to solve the aches deepest in their hearts.
Hostage negotiator Carrington Reed is called to a scene with a man holding 15 illegal immigrants hostage with his brother. Reporter Levi Ehrlich is sent to cover the story. Because Carrington has seen Levi provide fair reporting on her negotiotions in the past, she allows him access on her side of the barricade. Together they seek answers to why Will Kendrix has taken so many hostage and what his true motives are. Together they seek answers and justice. And their journey will take you through twists and turns to an ending that you likely won't see coming.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher. This review is my own, honest opinion.
I’ve been a big DiAnn Mills fan in the past, but this book just wasn’t for me. I felt like a lot of the writing and dialogue just didn’t feel natural or realistic, and the characters said things that I don’t think anyone would actually say in real life. The premise of the story was interesting, and there were a couple thrilling twists, but overall I didn’t enjoy the flow of the story and wished there was more chemistry between Carrington and Levi.
I really liked DiAnn’s previous series, but her more recent standalone novels have been misses for me. Not sure I’ll continue reading her.
2.75 Stars🌟
Thank you to Tyndale for sending me a copy of this book! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Lethal Standoff starts off immediately with Carrington Reed working magic as a hostage negotiator. I liked her character from the start. Her ability to talk down a husband holding his family hostage was absolutely incredible. We are also introduced to possible love interest, Levi Ehrlich, early on!
Fast forward and there’s another family in crisis, and we see both Carrington and Levi right in the thick of things. A son is holding a group of undocumented immigrants hostage, along with his brother, in attempts to coerce the local police to look into his father’s murderer.
The story from here is a wild ride through family secrets, forgiveness, and edge of your seat suspense. I loved the dynamic between Carrington and Levi. Levi’s character was one of my favorite parts of the book. What a guy!!!
I’d recommend this to anyone who likes true crime, suspense, and a little romance thrown in!
Thank you to the author and publisher for the opportunity to read this book. All views and opinions are my own.
This story features a hostage negotiator and an investigative reporter who are often found around the same scenes. They happen to be thrown together when Carrington is called to help negotiate with the Kendrix brothers who are holding fifteen hostages and Levi’s boss sends him to report on the event. This story was suspenseful and well written. It was my first Diann Mills book and if you enjoy crime tv shows, fact or fiction, you will enjoy this story. I thought the characters were well developed and the storyline was intriguing. I ended up finishing this one in one day! This is a faith based romantic suspense. I’m not usually a fan of romance thrown into my suspense stories, but this was done well and didn’t feel forced. I also enjoyed that most of the faith elements came from the fact that Levi is a Messianic Jew. I don’t know a lot about Jewish culture and it was interesting to see those elements in the story. I definitely recommend this one!
*I was sent a copy of this book by the publisher. All of my opinions are my own.
I heard good things about this book but had to start the book twice to get into it. This book is all consuming so you need to pay attention from the beginning or you’ll get lost. It is a thrill ride so be ready to hold on to your seat!! I’m glad I gave this book another go because I was definitely thrilled. It was a 4 star read!!! This book is an absolute must read!!!!
Lethal standoff follows the story of a hostage negotiator and a journalist who have interacted in several sticky situations but have more or less similar values.
It was a breath of fresh air as it was the perfect mix of the thrill and real life.
I enjoyed the character development and the plot. I also like that the story resonated with some of my values.
Lethal Standoff, by Diann Mills is a Christian romantic suspense story that is filled with action, suspense and mystery. This fast paced story grabbed my attention from the very beginning and held it to the very end. The writing is so clear it is easy to imagine what is happening and sense the fear and tension. I enjoyed this story and the wonderful caring characters. I enjoyed the honesty and truth Levi was convicted to put into his journalism. It is easy to see the hurt he has with the isolation from his family and old friends due to his religious beliefs. I admire the strength Carrington has to work such a stressful job while dealing with health issues. I was surprised by the Kendrex family dynamics and who really was behind the human traffiking and father’s death.
This is a wonderful story of healing and moving forward.

Lethal Standoff is an intense, action filled suspense that kept me turning those pages until the very end. Hostage negotiator Carrington Reed had been called to a situation where 15 illegal immigrants had been taken hostage by two local brothers. The incident did not end well and something about the entire scenario bothered Carrington. Working closely with investigative reporter Levi Ehrlich, they attempt to discover what could actually be behind the puzzling case. The more answers they find, the more they find their own lives threatened.
Exactly the type of suspense I most enjoy, Lethal Standoff has it all. Plenty of suspense, danger, mystery, and action combine with a touch of potential romance to make the perfect read. Characters are well defined and relatable. Their faith is tested and they persevere when odds are against them. A strong sense of right and wrong prevails.
I have always enjoyed books by this author and Lethal Standoff is no exception. Highly recommend!

*I received an early ecopy of this one from the publisher. This does not affect my review. This review is voluntary.*
From the opening pages I found myself invested and glued to the story. Carrington is an interesting and compassionate individual. Then we have the curious and determined Levi whom I found endearing and irresistible, I just had to know how his story turned out!
From the point they begin working together I was glued to the pages in this story! Not only that, but turns out that they were not only present for another day at work, but what they both soon realize is something far bigger than either could ever imagine! This case is explosive, and far deeper and has more twists than any other they’ve ever faced. This story is filled with surprise turns and hidden motive and that just added to the amazing bond developing between the two main characters.
This one kept me guessing and had me reading it in large bites, unable to resist knowing what happened next!
