I thought I was finally getting the hang of being a paranormal policewoman, but when one of the gemstones powering the barrier around the town is stolen, I’m as terrified as the average Joe. Of course, there’s nothing average about the Joes in this town. It’s chock full of mythical creatures, and some of them think the barrier is a waste of time.
Well, I’ve seen the cryptid monster beyond and I know we’re doomed if the magical palisade ever fails. Calling what would follow a massacre would be a gross understatement. The race is on. I need to find the gemstone before the weakened barrier fails forever and the fiend devours us all. No pressure then.
It’s a simple theft… how hard can it be to solve? Answer: Very hard. Especially when theft turns into murder.
There’s also the little outstanding matter of my date with the vampire leader, Connor, not to mention that my best friend seems to be falling apart at the seams. And if all of that isn’t enough to be cracking on with, I have a visitor due imminently. My mother.
This is the third in a series. The first two books were actually a lot of fun - not too deep, but I figured that would increase as the overall arc continued. Not so, unfortunately. This story starts at mid-depth, then floats straight to the top and rides the surface to the point of distraction!
Now, don’t get me wrong, the mystery is adequate (although the villain is shockingly easy to guess) and Bunny and Conner are actually officially together now, so there is a bit of progression. But the “umph” or meat of the characters and their reasons behind the actions is completely non-existent in this installment. Light and fun turned shallow this time around.
Case in point: Bunny acts like a complete TSTL airhead rather than a serious law enforcement officer - even for someone who is just learning (check my highlights for proof). Now, I may be prejudiced a bit because my real life is literally an episode of Blue Bloods with all the law enforcement and lawyer-types in my family, but that just makes the stupidity even more glaring. NO ONE who carries a badge would be that DUMB!! Please make it at least a little bit believable. One can be untrained and still take their job seriously enough to think things through before lollying off.
*sigh* okay, okay… enough whining. I’m still going to read the next book as soon as it hits, because I so want this series to turn into something great… and, I want to see what happens when Bunny’s mom arrives. :)
This one drops to 2.5 stars, and I'm not sure I'll bother reading on.
This series is a mashup of cozy mystery and UF. Honestly, the vibe is more cozy mystery than UF, just in terms of tone. And while I did enjoy it for awhile, it is starting to grind my gears a bit. Let me explain.
First, I don't like the FMC Bunny. Partially this is because she's inconsistent...so much so that I wonder if this isn't partially due to the two authors. Like, maybe they haven't meshed into a single voice very successfully? I don't know. Bunny is a 23-24 year old poor little rich girl, who alternates between being as vapid as a Kardashian and as smart as a whip. And sometimes she makes that turn on a dime, in a way that is jarring. She's also hugely self-absorbed and spectacularly TSTL. But yet, despite acting like a complete moron a lot of the time (especially when it comes to danger - she walks right into it like a brainless twit), she will - as needed by the book - make a lightning-fast connection between two pieces of evidence that no one else was able to see. She also makes a point of her independence. I get that - I'm similar, to the point where I consider it a flaw (I am like practically phobic of co-dependence) - but when you're talking about dangerous situations, it is unbelievably stupid. She takes offense at people offering to walk her home ... when there is a murderer disappearing people around town in book 1, and she has only been in Alaska (and so therefore, out of the wild city life of London) for like 3 days.
The only reason she hasn't died a million times is because it is really hard to kill a Mary Sue.
I hated her even more in this book for the way she treated Connor, honestly. She's just appallingly selfish.
My next major point of criticism is that we are 3.5 books in - and these are long-ass books (prequel short is 168 pages, book 1 is 529 pages, book 2 is 455 pages, book 3 is 528 pages) - and there has been almost no information on major plot elements.
We learned back in the prequel that someone paid Franklin to turn her. We learned in book 1 it was a witch. And that's it. No more info.
Her did went happily along with her being turned against the law and without her consent. Why? Is he in on it? Is he mind controlled? No info. Mom found out she was turned in the prequel that that was that - she disappeared from the page until she and Bunny texted in book 2. Briefly. But not about any of this at all.
Bunny is a super special snowflake. We learned that she's got magic. She's got a heartbeat (very slow). She apparently needs to breathe. Things that kill vampires don't kill her (that's been the case 2 times now, at minimum - the crystals in the face in book 2, and the banshee in this book), and we have no info about why. Just that she's super badass, and apparently draws super badass magical animals to her as if she's the Pied Piper of magical creatures (not that we know anything about them either, but Fluffy is clearly not just a dog - pretty sure he's died twice too, but didn't stay dead - and Shadow is clearly not just a cat/lynx). We haven't been given even the teeniest speck of information about why ... and yo, I have read 1,680 pages. It is RIDICULOUS that there has been no forward movement on any of these plot points, and I'm out of patience.
Bunny is also a TERRIBLE police officer. And that's fair, she's been a police officer for about 3 weeks. I think. There's not a clear indication of how much time has passed, but it doesn't seem to be much. But she acts like she's a badass police officer, and everyone treats her like she is too. This is partially because of the (unjustified) leaps of intuition where she puts pieces together that no one else can apparently see. And I can give a little leeway on that - she has an eidetic memory, so I can accept some Psyche-like piecing together of info. But she's had no training, and Gunnar is handing her guns (I laughed when he did that in a previous book, handing this British chick who behaves like a 15 year old a revolver) and letting her take the lead on cases. And she constantly handles herself poorly. For example, in this book she charges in - without backup - to confront someone she suspects is a murdering witch (who has already killed a banshee, and who seems to have taken down Connor and Lee ... the leader of the vampires and his second). And leaves, in the car, all her gear ... like the magic-suppressing cuffs, or her bulletproof vest. She is a complete and total dumbass.
It has become exhausting and tedious, to be quite frank.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I was a little disappointed at the third entry of this series. It felt a little like the authors had forgotten some of what they had previously written.
The book kicks off with no mention of how much time had passed (which is minor, but they did this in book 2 and book 2 kind of ended with an proclamation at an event was going to happen so book 3 starting off with no mention of it was a little odd.)
But, still. Minor minor. We then went on to finally admitting the Dog wasn't normal. (we're watching you!) But then we had a scene of an FMC being very surprised that a certain someone knew Monty Python. And mentioning how this makes her love them just a little bit more. ... which the FMC already knew? In fact, it was one of the first moments she realized he wasn't so bad because he completed a seemingly famous monthy python saying with her. (Which if monthy python is such a big deal to her you'd think she'd remember)
Added that to the minor scene where, for some odd reason, the FMC decide to standing a burning building and argue about how she isn't a lady like that somehow offended her when I'm pretty sure she first snubbed Connor by saying men didn't touch ladies without permission in London in book 1.
Oh, and her proclaiming she had "heard all the bunny puns" when the very first bunny pun that the werebear gave her in the last book was one she hadn't heard?
All very minor details but it makes me really worry about the next book and another potential drop in quality.
Never a dull moment in diverse supernatural filled Portlock with Bunny and her detective adventures. At first the zing was a heartstopping revelation for Bunny, but she came around and the romance with Connor was finally going places. A big surprise from Shadow, but we're still waiting to see what her and Fluffy's characters are hiding. The fire element adds more mystery. Absolutely enjoyed the book and definitely looking forward to the next with her mother arriving. I received an advanced review copy and leave this review voluntary Thank you
Cursed objects. Elemental magic. Fated mates. Family baggage. New supernaturals. A too smart dog that surely has to be more than he appears. A lynx kitten that for sure is more than it appears. This urban fantasy murder mystery had so many elements that immediately draw me in. Another superbly written addition to the series with a layered set of mysteries, great nuanced characters, and both romance and friendship that blossom in such realistic ways. This author duo knocked another one out of the park!
The Fanged Flopsy, aka Officer Bunny Barrington, is back in The Case of the Baleful Banshee. Get ready for more snark, more flirtatious banter, more found friends and family, and the best doggo in the world (after my doggos, of course).
A theft that can bring down the magical protective barrier leads Bunny onto a quest beyond anything I, as a reader, could have imagined. There are more supernatural species introduced, like the banshee. Fun fact: have you ever thought about where banshees come from? Are there male banshees? Don’t worry, you’ll get some of those answers within this book. There are cursed rocks and people, a murder, textonic plate shifts, a lot of drama, Bunny being her normal stubborn self, a smart doggo and a shadow cat. (I’m all about awesome animal sidekicks.)
While reading this, I thought it was a novella because I FLEW through it, but it’s actually 500 pages. It did not feel like that! And the ending made me wish the next book was out already. Good thing Harris and Dolbeare are a fast team and I won’t have to wait long!o
When I say this is my favourite series I mean I am totally obsessed with Bunny and her life in Portlock. I love everything about this series, Paranormal crime/mysteries are one of my favourite genres and this series has it all. The writing by both authors is fabulous. I love the way the two authors writing blends together as one, the lavish descriptions and the humour that's intwined throughout is great. The plotline I just love, I love the solving crime and the development of the characters. Each character keeps growing and I really feel they're created with a realistic contrast considering they're supernaturals. I love the furry duo that is Fluffy and Shadow, and of course Bunny... She's so intriguing and I can't wait to find out her revelation. This is another 10/10 and I highly recommend to everyone
After the previous book left me with a bit of a bad vibe, I knew I needed a guaranteed good time—so of course, I picked up another Portlock Paranormal Detective book.
Bunny is really growing on me as a character—I love how she’s developing, how her bond with her cute little pets is growing, and how her small town is packed with quirky, lovable weirdos. And can we talk about the hilarious little details, like her completely ridiculous backstories for how she got the nickname “Bunny”? I was grinning the whole time. 😄
Also, it seems like the romance situation is finally starting to resolve (yay!)—and I’m here for it.
Rating: Still a solid 4 stars. I’m definitely looking forward to the next one. Portlock has officially become one of my cozy comfort series!
I can’t believe how fast I’m reading these books. I am thoroughly enthralled with them. Bunny, Connor, Gunner and Sidnee are fantastic along with Fluffy the German Shepherd (way too smart to be a normal dog) and a new pet Shadow the lynx. I want to switch animal names though. The barrier around Portlock is failing and some of the jewels powering it have been stolen. There is also a murder, unusual fires, earthquakes, tsunami warnings, more monsters and something happening with the drugs that were left behind in an underwater cave in the previous book. This is a book with a lot of action, suspense in spots, romance, magic, mystery – it has everything. I’m loving these books.
I will never get enough of this series! Amazing storytelling!! The cast of characters are always entertaining. I love the storyline, always a good mystery to solve. It’s like a supernatural CSI and I am absolutely obsessed. Bunny, Fluffy, and the rest of the Portlock gang become more endearing with each book! I can’t wait for the next one!!
These authors just keep ramping up the awesomeness and tension in this series! Book three takes place a few short weeks after the last book. Bunny is now tasked with finding a stolen gem. Sounds simple. Gems are easy to track. Oh, wait... this gem is the size of your fist and fuels the barrier that keeps out the monster of her actual nightmares. Screw easy... things have gotten a tad difficult, but Bunny faces it head-on. With Fluffy and now Shadow by her side as well as her newfound family, she is determined to not let the barrier fall. In the meantime, she also gets to find out what the zing with the hot logger means and if she wants that in her life or if contrary is all she will ever be. The book was amazing and absolutely ramped up the tension, so deliciously that I stayed up way too late to know how it all ended. I also love the real Alaskan life and lore they have inserted into the story as well.
I was lots of things, but I tried hard not to embrace idiocy.
This series is a bit uneven. I really liked the first book. The it went kind of downhill. Not to really bad I’m dropping this kind of downhill but still…
This book is a decent urban fantasy book but it does not get above average.
I think I like each book in the series more than the last. Bunny has really grown on me as a character. I like all the supporting characters, Connor, Gunnar, Sidney, Fluffy, Shadow, Thomas. The mystery was good too. Just when you think it’s solved you discover it was a red herring. Misdirection everywhere, no one is quite what they seem. I love it.
I feel like I should be on a first name basis with both Heather G. Harris and her ever present narrator Alyse Gibbs. I've listened to all her Other World Realm, and I adore them one and all. All of the main character's have their unique personalities, and they even get their own series!
Anyway, this review is about the Portlock Paranormal Detective series! The main character is Bunny who's a newly changed vampire who escaped to an isolated town in Alaska, and her culture shock is amazing to follow! Going from her privileged life in London, England, to the town of supernaturals only. And this is on top of her only knowing about the supernatural world when she was forcibly changed a few months ago.
She personality does remind me of Lucy, but it does deviate on several points no wolf (Esme) in her mind needing proverbs explained and her world is distinctive from the Other World Realm.
The story is easy to follow, and if you want an easy read/listen with a female POV with a though but easy-going personality, a plotline that is easy to follow, this is a book for you.
As a devoted fan of the series, I can confidently say this is my favourite book yet - and that’s saying a lot, given my serious addiction to it! Heather G. Harris consistently delivers top-notch urban fantasy, and this installment is no exception.
The characters continue to grow, becoming even more engaging with every page. And now, amidst all the supernatural chaos, we finally get some real romance! It may be a bit cheesy at times, but it's undeniably adorable.
What truly sets this book apart is the gripping mystery at its core. I was completely stumped about who the culprit could be, which made for an exhilarating read. The addition of banshees brought a spooky layer to the story that I thoroughly enjoyed!
The ending was utterly dramatic and left me on the edge of my seat. I’m eagerly anticipating the next installment to see what kind of chaos Bunny’s mother will stir up 😂. Can’t wait to see what unfolds next in this thrilling series!
This book is the third of Bunny's series and our fanged flopsy does not disappoint 🤣 this one has banshees, protestors, gem thieves, and more false trails than even Fluffy can follow. But with the help of her found family, she is sure to figure it out.
On top of cases, there's also the indefinable draw to Conner, but Bunny isn't sure if she can let herself fall too hard. Plus there is something about her parents coming to visit, but I'm sure that's not importan
Each book in this OUTSTANDING series just gets better! I love how each book starts off with a punch! Drawing me in immediately. And it really starts off with a bang! No, not an explosion but an earthquake, Bunny's first earthquake experience and I was seriously giggling at her reaction. And her day keeps getting more explosive... A riot about the barrier, a stolen gem and fires erupting, all in a day's work for Bunny. And the best part? Well, it's Bunny who's convinced she'll solve all the mysteries in a jiffy, except, every new clue opens up ten more questions, and yet another murder...yet another mystery to solve, more big scary monsters to fight, while fighting a major battle within her! Yep, a day in the life of Bunny! I absolutely loved the humourous tone of this book, to me, it seems to be even more humorous than the previous ones, no easy task to achieve! Yet there's the awesome balance of serious, of mystery, of action, both of the heart and the physical, it almost feels like reading a whodunit novel by Agatha Christie! Superb!
And there's Connor, oh my word he's just PERFECT! I adore him! He gets me all flustered as though I'm the one he's making overtures to! He really makes my stomach clench and my toes curl. I did a major 'YES!' fist pump when Bunny FINALLY got to have her date with Connor! I do confess, Connor sets MY heart aflutter, so it's easy to see what his mere presence, his slightest touch does to Bunny. Not only is he delicious looking, he's gentle and kind and caring and thoughtful and protective, yeah, the FULL package! Added bonus? Well that'll be the 'zing' Bunny gets from his touch. I was starting to feel all warm and gooey as their date progressed and then the inevitable happened...nope, not THAT inevitable but one that threw Bunny into a tizzy! But good golly, COULD there be a more PERFECT man???? I doubt it....no matter what Bunny does, and trust me she did a rather horrific thing, unintentionally mind you and STILL Connor oozes love and understanding! Just....sigh.... But Bunny, now that's a character to die for! Well she IS dead, kinda...but her strength, her compassion, her NICENESS shines through all her insecurities, a major feat when one realises all she's gone through, from childhood to being a vampire. Most would be angry, most would be vengeful, but Bunny, dispute everything, sees through with her humanity. She's totally awesome! I was swooning in joy with every new development, personal and magical, talking place for Bunny. She so deserves the love and attention she gets from her new "family", who include her gorgeous doggie, Fluffy and her sweet kitty, Shadow. But, aha! THEY are special too, just as she isn't JUST a vamp, there's more to both Fluffy and Shadow, way more! Sidnee, is a dream "sister", Gunnar and Syd the perfect stand in parents, giving Bunny something she's never had, unconditional love and acceptance.
I spoke about mystery but whoa! Red herring after red herring litters the terrain, leading to my being caught off guard time and again! When the true nature of the gems was revealed, I cringed at the horror of what was done to them! The beauty of this co-written book and series is that you're caught up in all the characters, how could you NOT when they're ALL exceptional! You're caught up in the revelations, you're caught up in the tension of escape, and believe me when I say it was VERY intense! You're caught up in a world so removed from the "norm", you're caught up in government conspiracies, you're caught up in emotions and humour. Heck, you're caught up in ALL that's so masterfully presented by these incredibly talented authors! I cannot wait for further installments, as more pieces fit into this outstanding labarynth of truth, lies, friendship, love and humongous self growth!
The 3rd in the Portlock Detective Series sees our Vampiric Heroine having to deal with her usual multiple things in the role of Officer Barrington. First off is some protestors making things hard for multiple people, protesting the barrier tax. They believe that the barrier tax is just there to make the witches rich. However, Bunny knows better, given their run-in last book with the beast-beyond-the-barrier and the deaths of a couple of residents of Portlock. Making things worse, is when they are called to one of the locations that house the Barrier Gems, 4 of which are used to power the barrier. The Fire gemstone has been stolen from its place at the residence of the Fire Witch who was responsible for guarding it. As they start to investigate, Bunny and the Nomo discover that Banshees, a group of supernats we haven’t met before, have been involved in the protests, and could be suspects for the thefts. But they also find that there are numerous other suspects as well. Whilst this is happening, other strange things start to happen around Portlock as well (I’m not going to give spoilers), making life for the Nomo’s office challenging. Further adding to their problems, poor Sidnee is still trying to get over her crushing discovery that her boyfriend, Chris, was actually a drug-dealing creep, working for a secret Govt organisation with Military ties that are trying to work out how to turn supernats into super-soldiers that they can control. Sidnee is devastated by the betrayal of someone she was in love with. As with all of the Portlock Detective series, there are multiple other story arcs that run through each book, Bunny and Connor’s romance that has really started to heat up, but has some interesting turns in this book. There is Bunny’s ability to cast fireballs, as well as her other ‘non’ vampiric traits and what this means for her. The character work in this book (as with the entire series and all of the Author’s books), is exceptional. Bunny’s character continues to grow as we learn all sorts of new things about her (no spoilers), and her not-so-vampire abilities. We also get to see the development of a lot of other characters though, some favourites (Gunnar, Sidnee, Connor, Shadow, Fluffy, Liv), but also some new characters I won’t mention to avoid spoilers. The story is brilliant, but the characters make this series something special. Another aspect that makes this series outstanding is the world building, as the story is told, you really feel like you are in Portlock, walking the streets, sitting in the Nomo’s office, or screeching around the streets in the Nomo’s car. The descriptive work is incredibly detailed, which creates that atmosphere you need for a really good mystery thriller, and it just gives the story extra depth. Whilst this is an Urban Fantasy story, and the descriptive work regarding each of the different supernaturals is outstanding, it is also a Mystery-Thriller story. The Authors have done an exceptional job of creating a compelling and engaging mystery that leaves you intrigued. The crime-scene investigation is realistic, but also has a bit of a fun element with the Urban Fantasy aspects. This series has everything you could want, extraordinary characters, masterful world-building, slow burn romance, and a captivating mystery with an Urban Fantasy twist. Most of all, this series is a lot of fun! It’s not often you get to the third book, and the story is actually better than the first two books, but Baleful Banshee is the best of the series so far. It has something for everyone, and is easily one of the best Urban Fantasy series on the market today. Baleful Banshee is brilliant and an absolute must read.
“The Vampire and the Case of the Baleful Banshee” is the third book in the new “Portlock Paranormal Detective” series co-authored by Heather G. Harris (“Glimmer of the Other” series) and Jilleen Dolbeare (“Splintered Magic” series). Set in Alaska, honestly one of the USA’s most unique settings, it brings lore and mythology, the supernatural, and whodunit mysteries to life with well-rounded characters, delightful humor, gorgeous descriptions, just enough steamy spice, and twists you’ll never see coming! I cannot possibly recommend this book more!! 12/10, highly recommended!
Welcome to Portlock, Alaska. A small town, on haunted ground, that for all the “peds” (that’s us, the normies) know is a ghost town and completely abandoned. But look deeper, embrace your inner shifter, realize your nascent vampire, summon your waiting witch and you might just be able to step through The Barrier into Portlock proper! A town where supernats and peds (those in the know, of course) live in harmony, doing their thing day-to-day, living by moon and by sun, logging, fishing, and enjoying the life only Alaska can offer.
If you walk around town, you’ll find it really IS a ghost town, well it has the spirit so to speak. You might just happen upon the Nomo’s office (he’s like a sheriff, but a lot cooler) down the way from the hardware store. If you walk through the door, you might get to meet Sidnee (mer)maiding the desk, or Gunnar, the mountain of a man who wears the Nomo’s badge with pride. If you wait a minute, and it’s after dark, you might even run into a recent British transplant to Portlock, a former London high society rich kid, and all-around kickass vampire, Officer Bunny Barrington, “The Fanged Flopsy” herself (much to her chagrin).
Despite having only been a part of the supernat world for the last few months, Bunny’s hit the ground running and never looked back! Things have heated up with a certain vampire leader, who’s more than meets the eye; Officer Barrington is a recognized part of the Nomo’s office, and functionally the town’s Sheriff’s deputy; and the barrier might be falling to pieces. Whether or not the naysayers want to believe it, there IS something lurking past The Barrier, and when items of power start to go missing, The Barrier starts popping tears like Swiss cheese.
You’d think in a town where witches are real and have real magic, vampires run the local logging company, and the fishing industry is run by heated competition between shifters and sirens, the idea of a great beast lurking outside of the safety zone wouldn’t be something to debate, nor something to complain about. But safety can breed complacency, and with complacency comes disbelief. What if “The Barrier” is really all a tax dollars cash-grab by those who keep it going? What if it’s all political and financial corruption? What if wolf shifters were just simply werewolves?? Bunny’s got her paws full with this one!
I received a free copy of this e-book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Beautifully crafted, so well executed that I had to stop myself at book 4 at 3 am. Mostly because my dog said so. Fluffy would approve.
Rating: 5⭐️
The Vampire and the Case of the Baleful Banshee has it all. High action packed scenes, great mystery investigations, enough emotional drama to pack into a cargo hold, and a highly anticipated carryover that many people could empathize with. Cause Bunny’s mother is coming to visit her with all the dysfunctional trauma she’s bringing. Plus her annoying dog.
The Vampire and the Case of the Baleful Banshee has so many complicated storylines that fit perfectly into a single paranormal tale of a town under attack by multiple threats, inside and out of the barrier that has protected it. A family of banshees at odds, and Bunny facing several personal crises at the same time.
The authors remember that it’s not just the larger powerful magic elements that keep us engaged but the intimate aspects of the storytelling that pulls us in and makes us connect with the characters and the journey that each of them are on.
Some people are lost here, some still in mourning for relationships that fell apart, and some are still trying to find their peace in this new life. It all feels remarkably normal. Even in an urban fantasy environment.
Beautifully crafted, so well executed that I had to stop myself at book 4 at 3 am. Mostly because my dog said so. Fluffy would approve.
Highly recommend this and the series. Read them in order. They fly by so quickly because I’m absolutely invested with the series and characters.
Loving these covers. And Fluffy.

So i flew through this book. It was good, pretty on par with the rest of the series. While I will continue this series, I'm gonna just talk about some things that bugged me.
Spoilers ahead i guess? For anyone reading this, take these complaints as a grain of salt. They aren't majorly bad or anything, just minor things.
I'm sure there are other minor annoyances but i cant remember the rest of them.
The last thing, for the whole series is that Connor and Bunny BARELY spend any time together. They have a few cute moments together and yes I understand the whole mates thing comes into it. But not really enough for them to be in love and especially in the small time frame. (and yes alot of romance novels do this!) but I'd like them to have more than one or two interactions for the love to be....i dunno? have more substance.
Anxiously awaited this third Bunny book (had its release date marked in my calendar!) and devoured it as soon as I finished a book I was in the middle of when this released. Now I’m sad because it ended at a primo place and now I have to wait for book four!
We get to know more about the village, its inhabitants, the barrier, what’s up between Bunny and Connor (though regular readers of PNR will already have guessed) and more about Bunny’s abilities. And even though I thoroughly enjoyed the book I do have one big complaint. It is just not feasible that these people don’t know more about each other. First of all it goes against all existing mythology and secondly, supernaturals live a long time and they write stuff down. They would know this stuff because they would have been around it. There would be books, journals, etc. I don’t see the purpose in taking this route and the story would still work even if everyone knew all the stuff these guys “discover” in the course of their investigations. Like no one would have asked these things before? And small towns thrive on gossip for crying out loud. It really bugs me. But I’m enjoying most everything else so I’m attempting to cope!🤨
There are some serious TSTL moments here, especially one by Sidnee, that had me yelling at the book. Bunny seems to be avoiding those more which is an improvement. As has been true for the other books, one crime situation particular to the individual book is mostly resolved but the overarching storyline/threat still remains. I had to laugh at some of the conspiracy theories espoused by those who are protesting the barrier. A bit too much like some of the yahoos who are followers of one of our political parties.
This series has became an all-time favorite of mine! I had no expectations when I first started this series from two authors that were unknown to me. Now on book three all I want is to have a permanent membership to this exciting, amazing, fun and original series and the hope that there will be many more books to come! Each book of the series centers around the FMC Bunny (yeah, don’t let the name fool you!), and a new mystery or case to be solved. Bunny, is a new made vampire, who is hiding from her past life and 100 years of servitude, which brings her to a small Alaskan town filled with other supernatural beings. There, she works in the police department as a new investigator, together with her very wise dog “Fluffy”, her new feline pet “Shadow”and other very colorful secondary characters. It is a wild and fun ride to see Bunny navigating her new job with no prior experience, and yet, due to her wit, intelligence, humor, determination and all around amazing personality, she always manages to get to the bottom of the issue at hand and catch the bad guys! This is a light, fun read, filled with mystery, action, humor (that will make you laugh-out-loud), plus a slow burn romance that will grab your attention from the very first page to the very last one! Even though the police case gets resolved by the end of each book, there is a progression to the story and to Bunny herself, who is also somewhat of a mystery (more than a regular vampire should be), that is yet to be uncovered. Trust me when I tell you that this series is a ONE-OF-A-KIND and so worth reading!!! Praise to both authors for their imagination, talent and superb writing skills. As an avid reader of many genres, I don’t get easily impressed anymore, but this new series has me as giddy as a kid in a candy store!!! I really do hope there will be many, many more books to come! Highly Recommended 🧡💜💚
This series just keeps getting better and better! For a "quiet" town, Portlock sure has kept Bunny busy! This time, someone has stolen a gem that powers the barrier. Without the gems to keep the barrier up, the beast beyond could break through. It's up to Bunny to find the thief! There is no shortage of suspects but a definite shortage of evidence. From protesters, to Banshees, to elemental witches, to Chris the suspect list is ever growing! As are the disasters and literal fires Bunny must put out. I am super excited to see Bunny finally getting closer to Connor! (Although there was a short while where I did want to knock some sense into her!) Connor is definitely moving into book boyfriend territory! (Hands off this one Beba!!) Bunny is really finding out she has a wonderful found family in Portlock. (Just in time for a visit from her "real" family in the very near future.) And every time I get one question answered, I get at least 2 more!! Will I ever find out what Fluffy and Shadow really are?! Or Bunny? What is really up with Bunny and has her family been hiding things from her? As always, this book delivers a wonderful mystery with a twist you never see coming and a healthy dose of humor and sarcasm. There is always so much going on in these books and of course I don't want to give spoilers, so you just have to read it for yourself! (After you start at the beginning of course!)
When the barrier that keeps Portlock safe is damaged, Bunny discovers that it’s powered by cursed gemstones- and one of them has been stolen! Now it’s a race against time to keep the barrier in place, while the Nomo’s office investigates the crime; and it’s not long before murder is involved.
Some interesting things come to light in this third book in the series. Continuing on from where book two left off, Bunny is getting closer to Connor, learning more about the supernatural world, and discovering things about herself too. There’s a lot going on, and our heroine is hopping around trying to get it all fixed. The story features lots of action, mystery, and a little romance- the main mystery for this book is indeed solved, but there are some ongoing mysteries and storylines that remain unresolved, keeping the reader intrigued.
An entertaining story, I admit to laughing out loud a number of times, even as I enjoyed following Bunny in her somewhat dangerous adventures in Alaska. This is a fun, and yes funny series, with a smart and rather witty heroine, and a cast of fascinating characters. Paranormal mystery and paranormal cosy mystery lovers will enjoy this series with its unique heroine, and intriguing background story.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily please note there may be spoilers!
Fasten your safety bars properly readers, this book is a full-on roller coaster ride! It’s wonderful to be back in Portlock, well it is for me as I don’t have to live there! Bunny on the other hand is thriving in the small supernatural town, but the barrier that protects the town is struggling. And many of the townsfolk are protesting about its running costs.
The protesters soon become the least of The Nomo's office problems though when the highly valuable and extremely powerful gems used to keep the barrier working start to go missing and buildings begin to burn!
It’s all in a night’s work for Bunny and Fluffy and her new companion Shadow the smoke colour lynx kitten Bunny rescued when they went through the barrier when searching for two missing hunters.
Bunny also finally has her date with Connor, before more problems rise up with the ongoing cases. Puzzle pieces are put together and the jigsaw suddenly makes sense, but will the Nomo’s team catch the thieves in time?
