listened as an audiobook (there’s an accompanying pdf), as always open to new ways to manage my brain / life / etc, plus share insights with my love, his daughter, good friends, mentees/students, & others I care about so much who are also neurodivergent & brilliant.

not thrilled with a narrator’s voice, nor some of the introductory comments, but hopeful as it goes as not long…

update… there are some great suggestions here, but nothing really new. good to hear again & be reminded though, & will try to implement a few things more & more.

30-Day Executive Functioning Skills Mastery for Adults with ADHD: A Practical Guide with Real-Life Solutions to Strengthen Executive Functioning Skills in 30 Days or Less and Thrive with ADHD by Amy Harper is a self-help guide for adults dealing with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This guide is based on Executive Functioning (EF) skills mostly hampered by ADHD. The author herself has experienced ADHD. Thus, she gives insights from her experience with the disorder, which is reliable if you consider that she mirrors what life is like living with ADHD. She starts by defining adult ADHD and its symptoms, explains the EF concepts, and follows them up with examples of what normal EF looks like, separate from the challenges a person with ADHD experiences when required to use the EF skills in their daily life. These skills include initiating and completing tasks, staying focused, emotional regulation, planning and organization, mental flexibility, inhibition, monitoring, and self-regulation. She also elaborates on how ADHD impacts EF functioning and then outlines practical solutions to manage the condition. Finally, she moves on to help the reader develop mastery of the solutions given with a 30-day routine guide.

The author’s simple language makes the book easy to read and elaborates the concepts in an easy-to-understand and follow-through manner. The solutions offered are practical; the author starts with questionnaires to help with self-assessment. In fact, throughout the book, you will notice that self-assessment is essential to using this self-guide in pinpointing which of the 7 EF skills they have a problem with and how ADHD impacts their functioning. The solutions are given through general tips to help manage the condition affecting a particular EF skill, followed by targeted strategies to boost each of the 7 EF skills. She also uses practical examples, which make it easier to understand how to apply the solutions outlined for the particular EF skill hampered by ADHD. The author uses encouraging language to show the reader that they do not have to give in to their ADHD symptoms but that, through effort and practice, they can enhance their EF skills. She also elaborates on why therapy is good and when it is applicable.

The book is well organized, with each EF skill given a chapter with adequate white space. The paragraphs and sentences are brief, further enhanced with simple language use. The key takeaways at the end of each chapter help remind the reader of what they have just read from the chapter before transitioning to the next chapter. This strategy encourages the reader to stay focused and read on for more.

I highly recommend this guide to readers dealing with ADHD, to those who know or are close to someone with the condition, and to anyone who desires to boost their EF skills.

This book helped me understand myself better. The author guided me through exercises that made me reflect on what my strengths and weaknesses are. For instance, there was a section where I rated how good I am at different executive functioning skills. One of the eye-openers is realizing what I do well and what I need to improve. The more I understood my abilities and challenges, the more prepared I felt to face them directly. This self-awareness is such an important aspect of personal growth, and this book explained it so simply. The book contains many practical tools I found very useful. It showed me things like checklists and calendars that have become important for keeping track of my day-to-day activities. The time management tips, such as time blocking and priority setting, really helped me. These tools are not only useful for the 30-day program, but they are also strategies that I can continue to use throughout my life to maintain the gains I've made. The book provided a toolkit that I can rely on in the face of challenges for a long time.

This book helped me with a balance of the authors personal and research-based understanding of ADHD and practical tips on how to cope with it. I like the fact the content structure was organized and readers do not need to be at an advanced level concerning the condition in order to comprehend what is in the book. Apart from the awesome themes on compassion as well as silent wins, I came to love the positive tone and value that came with the content, which is incredibly helpful to those battling ADHD. I consider this book partly fits into the self-development genre too, so I recommend that people who love this genre should add this to their shelves. I end this with a five star because it covers a lot of ground and is a sensitive topic at that.

Well written advice

The first I noticed was the tone and writing was very soothing. The book was written in a way that is excellent for ADHD-Bullets, summaries, and checklists. The book was comprehensive and covered a good range of topics. The author identifies areas where people who have may struggle and take those struggles on. I would recommend it to young adults and adults who are coping with ADHD.

Where were all these ADHD books as I’ve suffered figuring out how to function all throughout my 20s, only to find out I’ve got a massive case of ADHD at 29 and these books outline exactly what I’ve been looking for all along.

I didn’t do the challenge but the book was good. I like that they broke it down into short chapters and bullet points because you already know that’s what your girl needs 🤣

I listened to this one. The performance of the reader was pretty irritating. In general, I think this book would be better in the print version. A lot of information that I would like to have access to at a moment's notice. That being said, the information contained within the book is vital and I believe it will help.

A strong book supported by clear examples and strategies to improve. I was very impressed by the tactics for emotional regulation, and also reducing and removing interruptions.

The attention to skills was strong as was the capacity to enhance and increase functioning. There is attention to family and work-based relationships and contexts.

This book is a helpful starting point with simple daily steps to build executive functioning skills. I liked the examples and how each day feels manageable and encouraging. Some parts felt a little basic or repetitive, and I wished for a bit more depth in places. Still, it is a good and easy read with practical tips.

For this being an ADHD book...

She really laid this out in a terrible way for us to read. I found myself skipping over each, "in the next chapter" and "recap" sections. We're attention deficit, we don't have time to read something twice!!! Lol.
