Sad Nuggie: Life is Sweet and Sour

Rate this book
A stupendously charming comic about an abandoned chicken nugget persevering through life despite his uncertain mental health

Sad Nuggie has moved to a new city. It's huge. It's noisy. It's downright overwhelming! And Nuggie is, well, anxious. Duh. With his scary levels of social anxiety, making new friends has been an uphill battle. He routinely drowns in the pool of his salty tears at work - his equally 'fried' colleagues, too, are at their wit's end. But most of all, finding that one special nugget on 'Tender' is proving to be a task!

Nuggie's super-smart therapist has helpful advice for him. They are a little hard to follow... but Nuggie is doing his best to act on them, survive and hopefully THRIVE.

Adorable, rib-tickling and surprisingly wise, Sad Nuggie's (mis)adventures underscore the importance of self-love, healthy friendships and getting on with life no matter what!

I received an ARC through NetGalley for an honest review

(First time writing that. Little bit exciting)

This is an unbelievably adorable comic about an anxious and stressed out Sad Nuggie whose incredibly relatable day-to-day life is a minor catastrophe, but he keeps on keeping on.

I genuinely loved this and haven't made so many ridiculous and embarrassing noises while reading something since Korgi and was stopping to show my partner every other page.

It's simple, smart, cute, and incredibly relatable.

Frankly, I adored every morsel of it, aside from the Sad Nuggie™ brand bio at the end, which just had a little more corporate content® vibe than I got from the comic in general, but that's me and capitalism ruins everything at least a little bit, I guess.

Otherwise, an absolute delight!

That's right. Five stars to the sad chicken nugget. I'm taking no questions at this time.

But seriously, the art style is absolutely adorable and this Nuggie is, well, all of us? Definitely me, though. This was a delightfully wholesome and incredibly relatable story. You'll laugh, you'll emote, and maybe you'll learn a few valuable life lessons alongside our charming little nugget.

I would not be surprised if Sad Nuggie found his way onto my shelves as he's definitely nuggie'd his way into my heart.

Bonus points for the Toronto backdrop, too.

** I received an ARC from the publisher (thank you!) via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. **

A weird book about a cannibal struggling with mental health issues . . . but in a cutesy and inspirational way?

So, like, Sad Nuggie is the author, the main character, and the social media and merchandising brand. He (the official company pronoun, but I find the character sexually ambiguous or fluid) is a chicken nugget. Who eats chicken nuggets. So, I'm a little unclear if Nuggie is a cannibal or, since he is composed of processed chicken flesh, maybe a zombie or Frankenstein creature?

One thing is clear: Nuggie has the worst luck. This sad sack cannot catch a break, every choice is wrong, every moment of chance goes against him. He also struggles with anxiety, seeing a therapist, but often retreating to isolation or a blanket cocoon.

Honestly, a lot of the appeal for me is how much Nuggie's life reminds me of my daughter's.

Anyhow, fans of Sarah Andersen and all those other anxiety-ridden webcomic creators should find this amusing and relatable. But some may be turned off knowing this is a branded spin-off of a merchandising machine focused on selling stuffed toys on the internet (at sadnuggie.com).

Disclosure: I received access to a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.com.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/ 5 stars ARC Review

Life is sweet and sour and sometimes more sour, more often...for some

Things I loved:

- The cover & illustrations are super cute.

- I really appreciated the story being told in a graphic novel format—it made a topic like depression more digestible and approachable.
*As someone who lives with anxiety and ADHD, I understood the disorganization. I understood being overwhelmed and just “giving up”. I recognized myself in so many of these moments. The therapy, the coping tools, the journey of building community and finding support—I’ve lived that too.*

- What touched me most was seeing Sad Nuggie fight for self. Even when things didn’t go their way, there was still a lesson.

- One moment that hit was when Sad Nuggie let go of something and thought, “That wasn’t so bad.” That resonated—It’s a reminder that sometimes, you have to put yourself out there. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t,but there’s always something to take from it.

- I especially loved the part where Sad Nuggie realized they weren’t ready to date and decided to date themselves instead. That was powerful.
That’s the kind of gentle shift we need more of in stories about mental health.

- That moment when Sad Nuggie had every intention of not letting depression win, but still couldn’t follow through? That’s real. This book didn’t sugarcoat the fight—it showed it, honestly.

My one & only gripe:

- The book felt more like a depiction of anxiety than depression for most of the story.
Sad Nuggie’s therapy session brings up anxiety, and throughout the book, the physical cues (like the tears) suggest something deeper, but the word “depression” wasn’t explicitly mentioned until the “Meet Sad Nuggie” and series info section. I wasn’t sure if that was intentional or if Sad Nuggie was navigating both anxiety and depression. Either way, some clarity would’ve helped.

All in all, this was a wonderful, empathetic, and important read. I look forward to more from this author and more of Sad Nuggie’s journey. Definitely recommend for anyone who needs a different perspective, wants to explore the theme of depression & anxiety or just need some softness in the storm.

Anyone struggling with depression and/or anxiety—keep fighting, but be gentle with yourself.

Maybe it's just my mental health journey of late, but this book made me CRY.

Not just a lil teary-eyed, not a little misty.

Sobbing.

Sad Nuggie is just where I, and many other people are, in life - walking through life, holding back tears, doing our best despite the horrors, feeling too overwhelmed/sad/anxious to figure out how to make your life better. I did feel bad that Nuggie was just on his phone the whole time, instead of taking breaks, and getting off the phone. I'm happy Sad Nuggie found his people.

Sad Nuggie’s “Life is Sweet and Sour” had some very cute and relatable moments in the plot. Definitely couldn’t help smiling and recognizing myself in some moments. Kind of wish it was longer for more relatable moments. It would have been nice to see more therapy moments too. Overall, very happy to have read this graphic novel. Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of Sad Nuggie.

I wasn't familiar with Sad Nuggie but the adorable illustrations caught my eye.

Sad Nuggie is just like us; anxious, tense, depressed, yet hopeful, optimistic, and determined.

Sad Nuggie's sweet, lovable face made me both smile and cry as I read about his adventures, facing challenges, and dealing with life's anxieties.

I can relate to so many of his thoughts and worries; his desires and fears, his needs and yearning for more and yet not.

He's so relatable, empathetic, and self aware, realizing he needs help and seeking a therapist to discuss his mental health issues.

He's just trying to live his life and doing his best.

We're all Sad Nuggie and we're not alone.

I've never related to chicken nuggets more in my entire life than I do right now! I see you Nuggie and I'm right there with you.

This book is as cute as it is relatable. There isn't much to the book, it's literally a comic strip about a chicken nugget who is just trying to make it through life. But at the same time, it's probably going to make you feel better or at the very least validate feelings about your own issues.

It's cute, it's punny, adorably illustrated, simply written and quick to read. So honestly there's no reason you shouldn't grab it.

OMG this was super cute.
I came across Sad Nuggie LTD through tiktok last year and i've loved them ever since, so when I saw this cutesy on netgalley I knew I had to try and apply for an ARC, I was super excited when I saw that they had accepted my request.

This book is about this sad nuggie that is trying to live his life but unfortunately things don't go the way he wants, and dispise all this unfortunate things that happen to him, he is willing to keep trying and improve his life.

I think a lot of us can relate to this poor nuggie (I certainly did). Sometimes adulthood is just hard and all we want to do is lie in bed and leave the problem for our future selves. This nuggie tries therapy and through it, he starts to try different things, maybe not all of them are of his liking but at least he's tried.

On another note, it also shows the value of friendship, you don't need to do everything on your own. I know that sometime, especially when you are burned out, the last thing you want to do is go out, but going out may help you release some stress, forget about your problems, and have a good time.

I loved the art of this book and I think that it portrays perfectly the life of most adults nowadays.

I’ve never felt a character so relatable in my life! Sad Nuggie brings real and raw feelings as well as cute moments too. The illustrations are so well done, even the pages between the chapters. The writing and experiences of real life situations like moving to a new city, joining in with new hobbies and dating were so well done and relatable.

At my being I am a simple woman. Give me some cute illustrations and make it funny and relatable and I'm happy.

I have seen Sad Nuggie comics on social media on a few occasions. This book collects a number of these comics in one volume.

The simplicity of the art style is to its strength. Whilst the tone is somewhat bleak at times it resonates with the reader and the struggles and emotions we all feel; it has it's humorous moments too.

"I might be bite sized but my determination is king sized."

Thank you so much to NetGalley for the ARC of this absolutely adorable little gem!
Sad Nuggie: Life is Sweet and Sour is a heartwarming graphic novel full of gentle humour, relatable emotions, and an irresistibly cute chicken nugget protagonist. Sad Nuggie may be small and crispy on the outside, but inside they're full of squishy feelings we can all relate to—anxiety, self-doubt, tiny joys, and existential snack-based musings.
The illustrations by Anastasia Sevastyanova are soft, expressive, and full of charm. Every page feels like a comforting snack for the soul, reminding us that it's okay to be a little sad sometimes, and that sweetness can be found even in sour moments.
A perfect read for anyone who needs a little pick-me-up or a gentle reminder that feelings are valid—no matter how nugget-sized they may be.

i’ve followed and loved sad nuggie comics for a while. they’re hilariously relatable. and i was so excited to receive a copy of this book from @hachette_india 🤩
thank you guys 🫰🏻

look sad nuggie is me and me is sad nuggie. simple. we moved cities and had a hard time finding our standing. we try to use local transport but it’s scary initially so you pay extra for cab. we try to do new things and while some plans fail, there are some things that you don’t plan for and that’s what makes your day. we succumb to retail therapy all the time. we wait for the weekends to only stress about the workdays. we try things out of our comfort zone and sometimes it fun. but the most relatable thing is that we buy ourselves flowers, cook up a good meal, dress up even and have solo date nights. we show up for ourselves (last photo).

life is bittersweet and it’s a roller coaster and it is what it is and all that. and sad nuggie shows you that if you keep going and keep trying, you’ll be ok!

i love @officialsadnuggie and i so want a nuggie plushie soon!!!

this is one of those books where you get to flip to any random page and feel whatever you feel. it’s warm hug to me and so yes i definitely recommend. you’ll finish it in a sitting but you’ll keep coming back to it. ☺️🫂

Sad Nuggie Life is sweet and sour is an intriguing and aptly titled comic that will ultimately take you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions and thoughts that are resonating and deeply thoughtful with the conclusion of smiles and laughter.

Sad Nuggie is an anxious, cute and adorable chicken nugget who has recently moved to a new city. Smaller tasks seem bigger and scarier. Building friendships, and finding the perfect relationship on Tender isn't working as planned. Everything is oddly overwhelming for the sweet Sad Nuggie. When his therapist asks him to follow a few simple, easy to incorporate tips, he begins to give the advice a chance.

This book is utterly captivating! I'm an avid fan of comics and graphic novels. Sad Nuggie was one of my anticipated releases for this year. And I was not disappointed at all. The illustrations are amazingly detailed, vivid and colourful. The author has tackled the tough subjects of anxiety and intense feelings with humour and fun but not in a way that is disrespectful and arrogant. Rather with every page, the individual situations convey proactive participation and never being afraid of the challenges and unexpected trials that life puts us in. The events were so resonating and hilarious that I couldn't keep myself from laughing out loud.

What an adorable comic about a sad nugget living with anxiety and the stresses of life. I read this with my 7 and 4 yr old as they love comics and chicken nuggets. My kids had a fun time seeing Nuggie pick outfits and all the sad things that happen to him, ie dropping his ice cream on the pavement. My kids loved the part of Nuggie wanting to do nothing but watch tv and playing video games all weekend. They lost their minds when he fell asleep the WHOLE weekend. They also understood that Mondays are the worst, lol
I honestly loved this and seeing Nuggie’s everyday struggles as my own, hit deep. There is a Sad Nuggie in us all throughout our mundane day to day tasks. Sad Nuggie is way too relatable, the illustrations are just so cute. I personally love the part about Nuggie trying to read and giving up.

I've been following the Sad Nuggie profile on instagram for quite some time now. And let me tell you, I really like those damn comics. Who knew that deep down, I am also a sad nuggie and that I'd find that page's content very very relatable?

This book isn't different from what you see on instagram. And if you like that, then you'll also like this. Here, we are even treated with stories that are longer than one or two panels and I am very glad with that.

Honestly, I can't find a single thing that I didn't like about this book. And if you like funny books, relatable content and good illustrations, then this one is for you!

I'd like to thank NetGalley for providing me with an e-book in exchange for a review!

If you made it this far, congratulations!
'Til next time, take care :) :) :)

I've seen Sad Nuggie around. I think my favorite videos are the ones where a person is selecting a Nuggie plush to fulfill an order. I picked this book up because I wanted to see what was up with Sad Nuggie.

I thought this comic was cute and relatable. I can see the appeal of this as a coffee table book. However, I think the main audience for this book is for established fans. As a newcomer, I was not enchanted by these vignettes, and nothing was show stopping. I'm probably in the minority though because I see many others adored this book. I'm happy for them!

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC!

⭐Received this ARC from Netgalley⭐

I have followed the Sad Nuggie comics on social media for ages so the second I saw this on Netgalley I HAD to read it. It did not disappoint! The book features the same cute, relatable Nuggie facing a bunch of relatable, adulting issues. Think moving house, starting a new job, going on holiday and even dating (Tender cracked me up).

This book was an adorable, light-hearted, quick read sprinkled with advice, puns, relatable situations and, of course, Sad Nuggie!

If you enjoy the comics (or are just looking for a funny, short graphic novel with the cutest nugget on the planet) then this is the book for you!

This was a bite-sized novel, much like its main character, Nuggie. The art was adorable, I loved Sad Nuggie! He was a little silly and relatable as he struggled through "adulthood." I loved the graphics; they were bright, clear, and well-drawn. The author did a great job at conveying emotion (of a chicken nugget, nonetheless, I didn't think that was possible). This book is more like comic strips of different events, although it has a fairly linear plotline. It was sweet, cute, and enjoyable! I liked reading about Sad Nuggie, and the graphics were phenomenal!

This was a remarkably relatable read, resonating with the struggles and emotions many of us face. The book's tone, while undeniably bleak, managed to provide a sense of comfort. However, I would hesitate to recommend this book to those who suffer from depression and anxiety, as it could potentially be discouraging for them. It's essential to consider the potential impact on these readers. Overall, I liked the drawing and found it enjoyable to a certain extent.
