Spells, hexes and curses.
Curses are falling on this town like rain in London. Just when I think I’ve found a link between the hexed victims, someone else shows up jinxed too. It feels like the devil is playing darts with my paranormal town, and if the dart lands on you, you get whammied with a curse.
Frankly, I haven’t got a clue how to find the perpetrator. Realistically, it probably isn’t Beelzebub. My sole lead is pointing me at the traveling black market that has just landed in Portlock. That’s all fine and dandy — if I can find out where it is. Weirdly, no one is willing to talk to the cops about the highly-illegal-market. I’m persona non grata, which I’m kind of used to, being a slightly-less-than-undead vampire.

Ugh, what fresh circle of hell is this? Thank goodness I have Connor MacKenzie, vampire leader and sexy lumberjack, to run to when the going gets tough.

Why, or why do I keep reading this series? I honestly don’t have an answer. Bunny is still TSTL to the point of hair-pulling and chunky baldness. And the overall plot to this particular installment was just a re-wash of the gemstone thing from the last book. The twist in the villain could have been awesome but they got off Scot-free so that was even disappointing. YET… we do get some major progression in what she actually is and what is up with her dog and that is interesting and entertaining.
Obviously there are many people who adore this book and the series. It does have Ms. Harris’s signature upbeat and quirky writing style - which I love. So… guess it’s all a matter of personal taste.

This 4th book closes out the current story arc but leaves tantalising hints for future story arcs. This episode includes some of the answers you have been waiting for since the prequel novella and most of them are very satisfying. Bunny's huge heart and knack for getting in trouble make for a great adventure here and if you are a Fluffy enthusiast, then this book is for you.
Without spoilers, this also seeks to address some of the issues around Bunny's abusive and neglectful parents. Most readers will appreciate this being kept light but still relatively realistic.
Overall this was a fun and engaging entry in a promising series. I look foreword to more.

Fantastic urban fantasy series.
I loved it! What perfect characters. Amazing world building and mystery. I couldn't quit reading this and I'm sad it's over. I highly recommend it to Patricia Briggs fans .

The dreaded mom is in town😩😩😩 and what a character she is. Secrets are revealed about Fluffy and they are a doozy!!!!!! The gemstones are at it again and this time they influence a surprising person.

I loved this book but it’s best to read the series in order. This series progressed in a way that just made sense with each book building on the one before it. Harris is great about ensuring characters still behave in ways that make these fantasy worlds realistic. She also excels at character development. Dolbeare creates a tension to the mystery and increased procedural element that keeps my interest. Together they have come together to create a world that I can enjoy stories in for years to come like I have enjoyed the Eve Dallas novels.
This is the last book in this story arc although from what I understand the series is set to continue. There are still some loose ends but this is a satisfying place to take a break. No spoilers but here are some of the things we learn. We now know how Bunny got her name. We get an answer to who paid to have Bunny turned. We discover why she is different. We even learn some of Fluffy’s backstory. I am looking forward to seeing how Bunny’s and other Portlock resident’s stories develop in the future.

This was my favorite of the series so far!
Bunny's mom comes to town and with her a LOT of Tea is spilled and it is piping hot.
So yeah I loved this one because we get a lot of information about Bunny, her family, and about Fluffy!! The romance between Bunny and Connor, her hot Vampire Lumberjack is crack-a-lacking. I like that we got some definitive answers and learned a lot of new things we never knew we needed to know.
This may be a bit of an unpopular opinion but I hope Bunny comes to sort of peace with with her mother.
On top of that, the mystery of week, the curses, was probably one of the more interesting with a surprise twist in the end.
I am ok with how everything ended up. One of the strengths of the series is how well the author continues to use the prior characters from the earlier cases and build on all the previous foundations. The person responsible for the curses makes a lot of sense in hindsight. Interested to see how things shake out going forward.
The humor and the town remain strong attractions for this series.

Whoa! What a great wrap-up to the series! While this book answers so many questions for Bunny and Fluffy, it also gives all new ones to ponder over. With people being cursed and her mum coming across the pond to visit, Bunny is stretched thin in this book. She is racing to save those cursed, having to go outside the barrier again and needing to solve the who dun it of it all, at the same time. She recognizes that Connor is her support, and the authors do a great job of allowing them to be helpmates and not have Bunny be a whining fool. My heart hurt for Bunny as she learned some very hard and hurtful truths in this book, but hopefully, ones that will ultimately make her a stronger Bunny. I look forward to where Bunny and her chosen family go from here and what comes of all the new information that was learned.

Detective Bunny Barrington is literally quaking inside her brown, rubber work boots. For the first time since she was turned into a Vampire, fled England and her family, and found refuge in the supernatural community of Portlock, Alaska, Bunny is about to see her Mum again.
As the small aeroplane circles to land, Bunny is racking her brain, trying to figure out why her Mum has decided to visit her after all of the horrific events that have passed between them. As competent and indispensable as Bunny has become to the Portlock Nomo’s office, she is still fearful of her Mother's disdainful and condescending view of her life.
The Vampire and the Case of the Cursed Canine is a welcoming story, full of immensely likable characters that will alternately thrill you and chill you. Evil is stalking Portlock, through it's own citizens, threatening the safety of the entire town.
Bunny finally finds out who was really behind her being made a Vampire, why she was closer to her Nana than her mum and why she had such a sickly childhood. And she is clearly devastated.
I switched sides so many times to keep up with who I thought was behind the mayhem that I was dizzy. This book will grip your attention from start to finish and shake up your insides like a roller coaster in between. Never before revealed secrets about virtually everyone will shock and confound you.

There was great plot development and we learned so much throughout the book. There were a lot of reveals and answers given that explain various other questions from the previous books. I enjoy the relationships between all of the characters and they feel fleshed out and real.
I did take issue with both of her parents being fire witches and not telling bunny about it. That's just a weird thing to keep from your daughter whether she's human or not. So kids and teenagers just think they're going crazy until someone finally notices and tells them? Wouldn't that lead to more exposure to humans? What kid does something they know defies reality (like control fire) and thinks, "man I should share this with my family. They won't think I'm crazy, surely"?
I'm not a fan of the chosen one/ prophecy thing. That's not an excuse to hide what you are from your daughter or to have her molested and turned into a vamp.
And fluffy being a cursed biker gang werewolf is wayyyyyy cringy. Her dog being a guy cursed to look like a dog and has spent every minute with you for a year and a bit (eating dog food, sleeping with you, watching you get dressed) is just too much for me to handle in this book.
That being said, on paper I should love this book. Like, 5 stars love it, but in reality It felt like a drag with a lot of weird stuff going on. Idk if I just wasn't in the right mood or head space for this currently but it felt more like a 3 star book to me. I'm gonna give it an even 4 until I have a chance to reread it at a later date.

Another good one
Another good entry in the Portlock series. As usual, there were moments where Bunny was borderline TSTL, and then I reminded myself, she's only 23. Her brain isn't fully formed, of course she makes dumb choices despite being an intelligent woman.

Each one of the books in this series is more exciting than the last! Bunny's mom has just arrived in Portlock, and SO SO SO much is revealed! Add to that people being cursed, a black market, MORE people being cursed, another trip beyond the barrier, and FLUFFY IS CURSED?!? Thank goodness she has one aspect of her life that makes sense: Connor. He has her back (and her front when time allows ;) ) and is a solid, relaxing presence for her in a time where everything else seems to be (or is literally) crashing apart.
My head is still whirling with all the revelations, and I can't wait to read what's up next for Bunny and Portlock!

Bunny has to navigate a visit from her mum, who didn’t help her when she was changed into a vampire. I always dread those kind of unjust dynamics but it was very well presented - realistically and hopefully.
There’s a lot for Bunny to deal with and we get lots of juicy reveals in this book. Wait until you hear about Fluffy!
Fast-paced, full of banter, action and heart-warming moments. Thoroughly recommended.

Omg! I absolutely love this series so much!
The cursed Canine was one wild ride, we got answers we were waiting for and some we didn't even know we needed.
I love Heather G Harris and Jilleen Dolbeare's writing, their styles really work well together and the story they create is just fantastic, really gripping and kept me wanting more.
I don't think I could love Bunny and Fluffy anymore than I do but after this book I love them more. I love all the characters in this novel, the addition of Bunny's mother was a great welcome to the plot and I really loved how it tied certain things up.
I will forever recommend this series.

To be honest, this is not going to be much of a review. This book is pretty much more of the same as the other books in the series so what I’ve already written for the other books, pretty much goes for this one as well.
It is a new case, of course, for Bunny (stilla bloody silly name) to solve.
Then there’s the mystery of her powers and her parents which gets a moved along a little further although I could definitely have been without the dysfunctional family and poor childhood nonsense a’la Hollywood (shit)show.
I like Bunny and her friends. The story is okay. The twist with her dog was a bit both silly and a wee bit disconcerting in where it went.
Overall it is a decent enough book to read. Nothing more, nothing less.

Bunny Barrington has faced down monsters, men, and shady government goons but facing her mum? She would rather go beyond the barrier again.
When a string of curses happen, Bunny is glad for the distraction and distance from her visiting mum, but when 2 people close to her are cursed, she has to head outside of the barrier to save them.
With magic black markets, questioned loyalties, and big personal revelations about herself and her dog Fluffy, Bunny leans on the people who have proven time and again that they are her family.
With the new information about her origins and events in her childhood, Bunny and Connor have a clearer picture of why Bunny was turned and who paid to have it happen. This information brings with it a whole new set of concerns for their safety and the need for secrecy to protect each other.

Bunny's mum is in town, so of course Portlock is quiet and everything is smooth for the visit. They get along great, every day is wonderful and there are no issues with the town, no crimes to solve, no truth bombs .Nope. Nothing to see here folks....
The Fanged Flopsy is off on another case that hits close to home.
Once again Heather and Jill have entrapped me within the world Bunny inhabits, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Having your mama come visit is such a joyous occasion, right? Well, no....not for Bunny it isn't! To say there are family issues would be an understatement of the century. Having a controlling, judgemental, critical, non affectionate mum is no fun and I was giggling at the thoughts filtering through Bunny's mind at their reunion. Which brings me straight into this, both these authors have the unique ability to have me laughing one minute, distraught the next, twisted in a knot of anxiety a minute later. Yes, it's emotional central right here and I freaking love it! To be able to feel everything these authors want me to, is a stroke of genius and the fact that it's a cowrite, even more so. I mean, they even had me grudgingly LIKING Bunny's mom, understanding WHY she resorted to....what she did, after a while! No mean feat, after all she's subjected Bunny to, and I do mean ALL, I didn't think there could be any redemption for her, I'm not condoning her behaviour but extenuating circumstances and all that....
But mama drops a huge bombshell on Bunny, like really HUGE! And they didn't stop there! The NEXT set of revelations were so jaw dropping, I could barely wrap my head around them. And Bunny's response? Well, she's the expert of running away! Not that I blame her, I sat up so suddenly at these revelations, I got a kink in my back! And they didn't end there, more bombshells kept dropping! Thankfully Gunnar comes the rescue, no, not to placate her, to give her a mystery that needs solving. There is something strange going on in Portlock, sudden violence is erupting, people are dropping like flies, curses are being brandied around and it's affecting many, even some of Bunny's new found family, even her dog! As if that's not enough to deal with, there's an elusive black market, the barrier is still at risk of collapsing, AND there's a kidnapping! AND the curse on her doggie....AND a prophecy! A bit much, right??? Now it's up to Bunny and her analytical mind to solve this new mystery, traverse dangerous ground, but solving of a curse or two, opens up a whole new can of worms! The why, the who dunnit, was brilliantly concealed until the eureka moment and I was rightly stunned! Even though a suspect was lurking in the back of my mind, I'd discarded them, but hells bells, I was NOT expecting THEM!!! Now THAT'S how great these authors are, they tease and snatch away so expertly, building up the tension and when they reveal it, I always find myself expelling a breath I'd inadvertently been holding! The build up, the tension, the balance of the story is pure perfection, the twists superb, hells bells, when Shadow.... well... suffice to say, I gawked reading that scene! And when Fluffy's true self was revealed, wellllll... gobsmacked!
The characters are exceptional! So fully fleshed out, so easy to identify with who they are, what they are. I loved the continuity of the characters, like John reappearing, Aoife, playing a vital role once more. And Liv , OMG do I adore Liv! What she does, verbally, to Gunnar, never fails to elicit giggles from me, I swear I can SEE him squirming! She's soooo much more than the facade she dons, her strength is unbelievable, even in the face of....ummm....challenges, her true self holds up. Well I love her alongside Bunny and Connor, both of whom I'm besotted with, yeah, he's just everything a gal could wish for! He's strong, he's protective, he's oh so charming, he's considerate, he's loving, he's compassionate and best of all, is his utter dedication and love of Bunny! The gooey warmth that leaps from the pages, their beautiful romance, wrapped itself around my heart. Let's face it, he's just yummy on steroids! What else is yummy is the whole Sidnee/Thomas situation, I was whoop whooping like a toddler in excitement! Sidnee deserves to be adored and who better than this enigmatic human! Ooo, and Fluffy was the cherry on top, he's just as cool uncursed as he is cursed!
Bunny is so ultra special, her personal growth, her evolving skills and magic, the revelations she's had to deal with, her compassion and let's face it, she has the bestest of "pets", have propelled her into one of my all time favourite characters. What an incredible conclusion to the series, so many questions answered, everything falling into it's rightful slot. Mystery, excitement, red herrings, action, an amazing magic system, awesome pacing, forgiveness, romance, this series has it all! Best of all are the incredible characters, who sadly I had to say goodbye to, for now.... I'm sure we'll be privileged to embark on more adventures with Bunny and Connor and Sidnee and Gunnar and Fluffy/Reggie.... and I'd obviously need to know more of Liv! A wonderful series, a wonderful conclusion and a wonderful opening for more! You HAVE to read this series, you just have to....

As if that's not enough to deal with, there's an elusive black market, the barrier is still at risk of collapsing, AND there's a kidnapping! AND the curse on her doggie....AND a prophecy! A bit much, right??? Now it's up to Bunny and her analytical mind to solve this new mystery, traverse dangerous ground, but solving of a curse or two, opens up a whole new can of worms! The why, the who dunnit, was brilliantly concealed until the eureka moment and I was rightly stunned! Even though a suspect was lurking in the back of my mind, I'd discarded them, but hells bells, I was NOT expecting THEM!!! Now THAT'S how great these authors are, they tease and snatch away so expertly, building up the tension and when they reveal it, I always find myself expelling a breath I'd inadvertently been holding! The build up, the tension, the balance of the story is pure perfection, the twists superb, hells bells, when Shadow.... well... suffice to say, I gawked reading that scene! And when Fluffy's true self was revealed, wellllll... gobsmacked!
The characters are exceptional! So fully fleshed out, so easy to identify with who they are, what they are. I loved the continuity of the characters, like John reappearing, Aoife, playing a vital role once more. And Liv , OMG do I adore Liv! What she does, verbally, to Gunnar, never fails to elicit giggles from me, I swear I can SEE him squirming! She's soooo much more than the facade she dons, her strength is unbelievable, even in the face of....ummm....challenges, her true self holds up. Well I love her alongside Bunny and Connor, both of whom I'm besotted with, yeah, he's just everything a gal could wish for! He's strong, he's protective, he's oh so charming, he's considerate, he's loving, he's compassionate and best of all, is his utter dedication and love of Bunny! The gooey warmth that leaps from the pages, their beautiful romance, wrapped itself around my heart. Let's face it, he's just yummy on steroids! What else is yummy is the whole Sidnee/Thomas situation, I was whoop whooping like a toddler in excitement! Sidnee deserves to be adored and who better than this enigmatic human! Ooo, and Fluffy was the cherry on top, he's just as cool uncursed as he is cursed!
Bunny is so ultra special, her personal growth, her evolving skills and magic, the revelations she's had to deal with, her compassion and let's face it, she has the bestest of "pets", have propelled her into one of my all time favourite characters. What an incredible conclusion to the series, so many questions answered, everything falling into it's rightful slot. Mystery, excitement, red herrings, action, an amazing magic system, awesome pacing, forgiveness, romance, this series has it all! Best of all are the incredible characters, who sadly I had to say goodbye to, for now.... I'm sure we'll be privileged to embark on more adventures with Bunny and Connor and Sidnee and Gunnar and Fluffy/Reggie.... and I'd obviously need to know more of Liv! A wonderful series, a wonderful conclusion and a wonderful opening for more! You HAVE to read this series, you just have to....

I thoroughly enjoy the overarching storyline for this series and the characters so far, but if this was meant to be the last book I would have rated it lower due solely to the fact that we only have a like three of the several plot lines resolved after four books. And even the ones we have resolved I feel like only one of the three were only partially resolved.
Finally Gunnar stood up to Liv’s unwanted advances. Bunny stood up to her mom. Connor and Bunny are together, we see the beginning of Sidnee with a new love interest. These were all really nice to behold, and I’m hoping we get more backstory to build on in future books.
What I’m frustrated with at the end of the book is I STILL don’t understand why Portlock needs to be protected by this barrier exactly. Yes, we hear it’s because of a monster, and we even have Bunny suspecting Shadow might be the pup of the monster after encountering it again when retrieving needed herbs from beyond the barrier. There simply isn’t enough backstory about the barrier to understand the urgency or necessity of the barrier. Do other supernatural communities have a similar struggle or need of a barrier, or is it unique to Portlock? It doesn’t seem like this is something Bunny’s mom is familiar with, so once again, my biggest annoyance with this series is more world building would go a long way.
We still didn’t see any sort of final show down between Connor and Stan that would show Stan conceding to Connor. There was no conclusion to the fisheye storyline, no idea what type of supernatural Gunnar is, does Gunnar accept Connor for Bunny or does he still prefer Stan? Why does he prefer Stan and he warned her against Connor? Why are Sidnee and Stan de facto children of Gunnar and Sigrid? What will happen when Connor’s dad tries to call Connor to take his role as heir? Is Connor’s dad his biological father and if so how did Connor become a vampire? Can they be born or was he turned once he reached a certain age?
There is simply too much information missing. With Bunny being new to the paranormal world, you’d think that is the perfect mechanism to feed the newly turned vampire the necessary information to navigate her new reality all while feeding the readers with the same necessary information. While I appreciate us getting most of the backstory of why Bunny’s childhood was so awful, her mother said she was sorry, but certainly didn’t act like she was. There was no true remorse until after Bunny showed her mom her magic. And what of Bunny’s dad? That dude has a lot of explaining to do. However, I wouldn’t blame Bunny if she went low contact with them.
I find it almost impossible to believe that even if these supernatural factions didn’t share their strengths, powers, or weaknesses, they would still know who the leaders are around the world, right? Also, I find it hard to believe that the Octavius or Frankie are done with Bunny, or what their plans are, which makes me believe Connor’s dad would have heard something by now and gone to Alaska to see for himself.

“The Vampire and the Case of the Cursed Canine” is the fourth book in the new “Portlock Paranormal Detective” series co-authored by Heather G. Harris (“Glimmer of the Other” series) and Jilleen Dolbeare (“Splintered Magic” series). Set in Alaska, honestly one of the USA’s most unique settings, it brings lore and mythology, the supernatural, and whodunit mysteries to life with well-rounded characters, delightful humor, gorgeous descriptions, just enough romance, and twists you’ll never see coming! I cannot possibly recommend this book more!! 12/10, highly recommended!
Welcome to Portlock, Alaska. A small town, on haunted ground, that for all the “peds” (that’s us, the normies) know is a ghost town and completely abandoned. But look deeper, embrace your inner shifter, realize your nascent vampire, summon your waiting witch and you might just be able to step through The Barrier into Portlock proper! A town where supernats and peds (those in the know, of course) live in harmony, doing their thing day-to-day, living by the moon and by the sun, logging, fishing, and enjoying the life only Alaska can offer.
If you walk around town, you’ll find it really IS a ghost town, well it has the spirit so to speak. You might just happen upon the Nomo’s office (he’s like a sheriff, but far more Viking) down the way from the hardware store. If you walk through the door, you might get to meet Sidnee (mer)maiding the desk, or Gunnar, the mountain of a man who wears the Nomo’s badge with pride. If you wait a minute, and it’s after dark, you might even run into a recent British transplant to Portlock, a former London high society rich kid, and all-around kickass vampire, Officer Bunny Barrington, “The Fanged Flopsy” herself (much to her chagrin).
Despite having only been a part of the supernat world for the last few months, Bunny’s hit the ground running and never looked back! The vampire leader Connor Mackenzie and bunny are officially a thing; Officer Barrington is a recognized part of the Nomo’s office, and is the town’s Sheriff’s deputy; aaaaand The Barrier which keeps all of Portlock safe from The Beast Beyond the Barrier is in imminent danger! Whether or not the naysayers want to believe it, there IS something lurking past The Barrier, and having seen it with her own eyes and fought it with her own fangs, Bunny’s not about to back down on protecting the town.

WOW! What a series! And, the fourth book? So full of revelations, it made my head spin!
These authors have crafted a remarkable world of supernaturals and humans who’ve congregated for mutual protection and freedom from bigotry in Portlock, Alaska. Their security is compromised, however, by the slowly deteriorating barrier that sits like an invisible dome over the town. If it fails completely, they will be exposed to a malevolent power, with no hope of salvation.
The main female character – “Bunny” or “Elizabeth Octavia Barrington” – is an exile from London, England, who was turned into a vampire against her will by a vampire Prince of Europe. If she had stayed in London, she would have had to serve for 100 years in the vampire King’s conclave, a veritable slave to the Prince who forcibly turned her.
What follows is four novels of engaging, can’t-put-it-down storytelling, mainly involving Bunny’s new job as a detective of sorts in the Portlock Sheriff’s (“Nomo’s”) Office. There’s plenty of mystery, suspense, MILD horror, and thriller aspects to each of the books (a fifth is set for release in 2025), and, also a very slow-burn romance between Bunny and the Portlock vampire leader/councilman, “Connor Mackenzie.” (Warning to “sexy times” fans: there’s not much steam here because the mystery/suspense/thriller aspects of the series drive the novels.)
The authors have created a host of warmly relatable secondary characters – including “pets” – and the authors regularly interject dashes of humor to ease the nail-biting tension they have created. Also, the authors liberally sprinkle in recognizable cultural references, mainly to movies – “Jaws,” “Minions,” “Silence of the Lambs,” and “Castaway,” to name but a few. (This may backfire on the novels eventually because it will “date” them.)
The novels all have only a few technical errors each, but I would caution readers that they are all written with British English spellings (“colour” and “mould”), grammar (he was sat down beside her), euphemisms/phrases, and punctuation (periods and commas OUTSIDE the quotation marks). I’m used to this because I’ve worked/socialized with Brits and Aussies, so it didn’t bother me in the least.
All in all, I’m so very impressed with this series and can’t wait for the authors to produce Book 5! (Note: None of these novels end with a cliffhanger, so it's safe to jump in and start reading Book 1 right now.) I would highly recommend it to all supernatural/paranormal mystery/suspense/thriller fans! Read it and ENJOY!

The Vampire and the Case of the Cursed Canine: An Urban Fantasy Novel is a story I’ve been anticipating but sort of dreading. Because it’s focused on Fluffy, that endearing, remarkable German Shepherd who Bunny rescued in London, and has been a huge emotional support and absolute love for her here.
Well, it doesn’t start out as being a Fluffy centric story but as an investigation into who is hexing people around town with increasingly complex and dangerous curses. Really mysterious cases lead into ones that are closely linked to the people Bunny holds dear and are getting curses that are highly dangerous, even deadly.
The new elements introduced a fabulous magical black market and intriguing sides to established characters.
But the biggest issue and surprise is that Fluffy carries a curses that no one knew about and has no idea what it entails.
Again, this is such a completely layered and beautifully crafted story that I’m not throwing in any spoilers. Just that it’s wrenching emotionally, funny, but mostly poignant and sad. It’s gives Bunny and the reader even greater insight into her traumatic childhood and recent horrible events that led her to Alaska.
This book is full of scenes and characters that have reverberations that will carry forward for the rest of the series.
Amazing stuff and fantastic writing.
Highly recommended, a reader’s choice for me. Read the series in the order written.

A SERIES THAT YOU HOPE IT NEVER ENDS! 5+ Stars 🥰💜💕
This series has became an all-time favorite of mine! I had no expectations when I first started reading this series from two authors that were unknown to me. Now on book four all I want is to have a permanent membership to this exciting, amazing, fun and original series and the hope that there will be many more books to come! Each book of the series centers around the FMC Bunny (yeah, don’t let the name fool you!), and a new mystery or case to be solved. Bunny, is a new made vampire, who is hiding from her past life and 100 years of servitude, which brings her to a small Alaskan town filled with other supernatural beings. There, she works in the police department as a new investigator, together with her very wise dog “Fluffy”, her new feline pet “Shadow”and other very colorful secondary characters. It is a wild and fun ride to see Bunny navigating her new job with no prior experience, and yet, due to her wit, intelligence, humor, determination and all around amazing personality, she always manages to get to the bottom of the issue at hand and catch the bad guys! This is a light, fun read, filled with mystery, action, humor (that will make you laugh-out-loud), and romance. Even though the police case gets resolved by the end of each book, there is a progression to the story and to Bunny herself, who is also somewhat of a mystery (more than a regular vampire should be). Trust me when I tell you that this series is a ONE-OF-A-KIND and so worth reading!!! Praise to both authors for their imagination, talent and superb writing skills. As an avid reader of many genres, I don’t get easily impressed anymore, but this new series has me as giddy as a kid in a candy store!!! I really do hope there will be many, many more books to come! This is the 4th book in the Portlock Paranormal series and such an amazing book! This one picks up where the last book left off - Bunny's mom has arrived! While normally a person would be happy to see their mother, Bunny and her family are far from normal. Tensions are thick enough to cut with a knife with Her mother and her Pomeranian staying with her. But luckily, someone is cursing the residents of Portlock so Bunny can get out of the house! It starts off with a random curse on the docks, but then it gets personal, cursing Stan and Sig.
This book was full of mysteries and more travel beyond the barrier. Just when I thought I had a handle on what was going to happen, I was smacked in the face with a HUGE surprise! There many questions answered in this book - Fluffy, who really wanted Bunny turned and who is trying to get rid of the gems. But there are still some left unanswered! What is Shadow? What is the Beast? There is a prophecy! Thank goodness there will more books! (With a wait - but I think I can be patient!)
I love how Bunny is evolving into who she really wants to be! Even with her overbearing mother there, she keeps true to herself. And even though they have their (huge) differences, Bunny is trying to make things work with her mom. We get a lot of backstory from Bunny's family, luckily Connor is by her side through it all. (He is definitely still on my book boyfriend list!)
I can't wait to see where else this leads and read the authors' other books in the meantime! (I have a lot to catch up on!) So if you haven't started yet - what are you waiting for?!

I love how Bunny is evolving into who she really wants to be! Even with her overbearing mother there, she keeps true to herself. And even though they have their (huge) differences, Bunny is trying to make things work with her mom. We get a lot of backstory from Bunny's family, luckily Connor is by her side through it all. (He is definitely still on my book boyfriend list!)
I can't wait to see where else this leads and read the authors' other books in the meantime! (I have a lot to catch up on!) So if you haven't started yet - what are you waiting for?!

This series just keeps getting better with every book! I found this book nearly impossible to put down. If it weren't for work getting in the way, I would have read it in one sitting.
One of the things I've loved about these books is that the storylines each time are so engaging. The characters and their (mis)adventures keep drawing me in and keeping my attention glued to the pages.
Bunny is such a great character! I feel like I've gotten to know her personally, as her personality has been so well created. And we've gone along on for the ride as she's become more and more comfortable in her role as a representative of the Nomo office of Portlock.
But Bunny isn't the only great character - there are plenty of others! Connor is just about the perfect book boyfriend, and the relationships that are growing into friendships all around her are all with lovable characters too. Somehow, I'm even myself liking many of the less-upstanding members of the community!
And let's not forget the four-legged members of the team, who all also get their own moments in the storyline spotlight. Especially Fluffy - what a surprise is waiting for you with that twist...
This is book 4 of the Portlock Paranormal Detective Series (plus there's a prequel) and I've loved every moment of all the books. If you haven't read the others, stop right here and go back to the start. You'll be glad you did.

Major spoilers
There was great plot development and we learned so much throughout the book. There were a lot of reveals and answers given that explain various other questions from the previous books. I enjoy the relationships between all of the characters and they feel fleshed out and real.
I did take issue with both of her parents being fire witches and not telling bunny about it. That's just a weird thing to keep from your daughter whether she's human or not. So kids and teenagers just think they're going crazy until someone finally notices and tells them? Wouldn't that lead to more exposure to humans? What kid does something they know defies reality (like control fire) and thinks, "man I should share this with my family. They won't think I'm crazy, surely"?
I'm not a fan of the chosen one/ prophecy thing. That's not an excuse to hide what you are from your daughter or to have her molested and turned into a vamp.
And fluffy being a cursed biker gang werewolf is wayyyyyy cringy. Her dog being a guy cursed to look like a dog and has spent every minute with you for a year and a bit (eating dog food, sleeping with you, watching you get dressed) is just too much for me to handle in this book.
That being said, on paper I should love this book. Like, 5 stars love it, but in reality It felt like a drag with a lot of weird stuff going on. Idk if I just wasn't in the right mood or head space for this currently but it felt more like a 3 star book to me. I'm gonna give it an even 4 until I have a chance to reread it at a later date.

I want to move to Portlock. It has magic, sweet vamps, mysterious monster lurking, and a dome to protect the town. Officer Bunny Barrington has made herself a home, friends, and a career. However, the visit from her mom brings judgement and derision. But with secret markets, curses, and mystery about the gems, things escalate into kidnapping, cursed friends, and secrets revealed. During all this chaos, Conner is steadfast in Bunny's corner, giving support. Friends and co-workers are ever willing to lend a hand. Bunny gets answers to some questions, but new ones pop up.
A fantastically written by coauthors. I am totally addicted to this story and can't wait for the next book, Helacious Hag date to be announced. These characters are vivid and exciting. The story is unputdownable and intriguing filled with friendship, romance, and mystery.

I think Portlock Paranormal is one of those series where the books get progressively better and better with each instalment. My only real criticism (and it's not THAT much of a criticism) is that if I didn't know Jilleen Dolbeare co-authored it with Heather Harris, I'd just assume it was yet another spin-off series in the Other Realms world.
Yes, sure, this, is set in Alaska and the Other Realm books are set in the Midlands... but if Bunny and Jinx turned out to have met each other and made friends in the past, it wouldn't feel at all out of place in either world. Plus, there are definite similarities between Gato and Fluffy, and... I guess it's just while many of the specific details are different, the feel of the worlds is very similar.
That said, this book feels like the final book in the series, even though there's apparently a Book 5 being released next year, and we finally get a few important mysteries (where DID Bunny's name really come from. Who was behind the decision to turn her, and why? And what's the real deal with Fluffy?) definitively solved. Plus, we get to see Bunny growing as a person, especially when it comes to her relationship with her mother.
But mostly, I just enjoyed hanging out with the Portlock Paranormal crew. It's a fun, cozy world to hang out in.
