From the author of Reese’s Book Club Pick and New York Times bestseller Wrong Place Wrong Time comes an addictive thriller about a new mother’s world upended when her husband commits a terrifying crime. How well does she truly know the man she loves? And what danger does she face if her entire life has been built on a lie?
It is June 21st, the longest day of the year, and new mother Camilla’s life is about to change forever. After months of maternity leave, she will drop her infant daughter off at daycare for the first time and return to her job as a literary agent. Finally. But, when she wakes, her husband Luke isn’t there, and in his place is a cryptic note.
Then it starts. Breaking news: there's a hostage situation developing in London. The police arrive, and tell her Luke is involved. But he isn't a hostage. Her husband—doting father, eternal optimist—is the gunman.
What she does next is crucial. Because only she knows what the note he left behind that morning says...
Famous Last Words is the story of a crime, a marriage, and more secrets than Camilla ever could have imagined. This novel cements Gillian McAllister’s reputation as “the best at putting her characters in impossible situations and making her readers not only contemplate but feel what it would be like to find themselves in those situations.” (Emily Henry)
When a book is off to as exciting of a start as this one, is it realistic to expect the rest of the book to match or even exceed that? Hmm, that's a question I'm still pondering.
Cam drops off her baby girl at daycare for the first time and returns to work. But before she does, she woke up to an empty spot next to her and a cryptic note from her husband that morning. And now, the police are at her workplace insisting that Luke is in a hostage situation, not as a victim, but as the perpetrator. But Cam knows Luke, and surely he could not possibly have done what the police are saying. Could he?
You guys, this has got to be the most electrifying start to a thriller I've ever come across. The first 100 pages just grabbed me by the throat. I've read a lot of thrillers, but I've never had one that held me in its thralls so swiftly and so surely. The premise is both outrageous and also surprisingly relatable, making it easy to put oneself in Cam's shoes and slip into her suddenly insane world.
Cam's point of view has additional poignancy because she's a new mother, and I remember being in that phase not so long ago myself. Gillian McAllister sprinkled in such insightful commentary about new motherhood that it felt like she really understood, and of course, after reading the Acknowledgements, it totally made sense because she had a baby in the midst of writing this book.
Then we come to the point of view of Niall, the hostage negotiator. It's such a unique perspective, and there were all kinds of interesting tidbits in there about what one would do in an actual hostage situation, things I've never thought about but found utterly fascinating. The juxtaposition of his and Cam's views really upped the tension to a whole other level previously unseen in thrillers, if I may say so.
But then we reach Act II, and the pace slows way down. After the adrenaline rush that was Act I, the pacing of Act II was almost a shock. Instead of action, we have now reached introspection. And we stay in this slow moving haze almost all the way until the very end.
Because this whole section was so slow and there was so much rumination on the part of the characters, it also gave me the reader room to think as well. And when that happens, you know I'm going to figure out something or other, and therefore ruin the surprises for myself. And the way this story slowly proceeded, there was really only one way it could've all gone down.
Please don't get me wrong. It's not that I didn't like Act II or found it boring. It's more that the beginning of the book set up certain expectations, ones where I can't help but anticipate and then feel a little let down by the way it all turned out. To be fair, it's not entirely the fault of the book. This happens often with me and thrillers, and unless aliens or ghosts show up—in which case, we'd be in a completely different genre altogether—I don't really see how they could've met my lofty expectations.
Still, all my grousing aside, I did have a lot of fun with this book. The first 100 pages in particular were so stellar, I feel like they carried the rest of the book for me. At this point, Gillian McAllister has really shown herself to be a writer of thrillers with the most unusual and intriguing premises, and I can't wait to see what she comes up with next.
I’m always biased when it comes to rating any book by Gillian McAllister—I’m ready to give five stars before I even start reading! And once I finish, I feel validated because her work always turns out to be five-star worthy, mind-blowing as usual!
The same thing happened with this book, but two elements made me love it even more than her previous works. First, Camilla’s way of escaping into fiction resonates deeply with me. The portrayal of a bookish introvert's inner world and her reactions every time she opens a new book are so meticulously written that I wanted to scream, “Yes! I feel exactly the same way! I hear you!”
The second standout is the first third of the book—the bloody siege part—which may be one of the best examples of thriller writing I’ve read recently. The way unknown facts pile up, the escalating tempo, the building tension, the "what’s going to happen next" mystery—it’s all so nail-biting, heart-racing, and adrenaline-pumping that it left me sweating, screaming, and cursing. The first shocking twist is a punch to the face—entertaining and disturbing in equal measure.
As the story moves past the siege into the second act, I was left feeling impatient and restless. I kept thinking, "Come on, Luke can’t be bad! Even though he has a French name, he’s still a good guy! The sweet, extroverted, down-to-earth, Jaffa-cake-loving man who sent those clever texts can’t be a mastermind criminal! There has to be an explanation!"
The mystery continues to build, and McAllister keeps us in the dark for so long about what happened on the longest day, June 21st in Bormendsey. Why does literary agent Camilla find out that her husband left the house earlier than usual, on the worst day of all—her first day back at work after maternity leave—without even warning her? Why did he leave a cryptic note instead of his usual witty comments? Why isn’t he answering his phone? And why do the police insist that her husband has a gun and has taken three people hostage: two unknown men and a woman, who happens to be the wife of a cop? Has he been living a double life? What could have led to this? He couldn’t possibly kill anyone… could he?
And then—bang!—something irreversible happens.
After the siege, Camilla tries to move on with her life, still sending texts and messages to her husband's phone, hoping that maybe, just maybe, he’ll somehow read or listen to them.
The other perspective in the story comes from hostage negotiator Niall, whose life also changed on June 21st due to a misjudgment that cost him his career, his marriage, and his peace of mind. There are still dead bodies after the siege with identities that remain unknown—a baffling mystery. Niall can’t let it go until he uncovers the truth and seeks justice.
I’ll admit that the final third of the book was a little weaker than the earlier parts. Don’t get me wrong—pieces of the puzzle come together, and after many jaw-dropping twists, we do get answers, even if some of them are a little far-fetched. There are no plot holes, though. McAllister is a master at formulating complex timelines, weaving intricate details, and delivering twists you’d never anticipate. She did it perfectly in Wrong Place, Wrong Time (which is still my favorite of hers), and she does it here too, connecting dots you’d never think to consider, giving us surprising insights.
Overall, I loved this book with every fiber of my being. I have to say, though, the first third remains my favorite part. As a hopeless romantic, I rooted for Camilla and Luke, even though Luke turned out to be dangerous! The romantic thread running through the story made me connect with the characters even more. I also really enjoyed Niall’s chapters—his self-reflection, his determination to make up for his mistakes, and his obsession with cracking the bizarre case full of unknowns. He might be my favorite character—a sort of Cupid and justice seeker rolled into one, a workaholic who is likable despite his flaws.
This is now my second-favorite McAllister twisty, smart, and addictive thriller, easily a 5+ star read. My advice: go into this one blind, cancel your plans, and set aside time to immerse yourself in this rollercoaster of a book. You won’t regret it!
Many thanks to NetGalley and William Morrow for providing this digital review copy of an unputdownable thriller in exchange for my honest thoughts, which I truly appreciate. And a huge thank you to Ms. McAllister for taking me on yet another smart, thrilling, and twisty ride!
It’s the summer solstice, and it also happens to be Camilla’s Deschamps first day back at work after maternity leave, and also daughter Polly’s first day at nursery. Camilla would have expected some help from her husband Luke, but she arrives downstairs to discover that he’s nowhere to be seen. What she does find is an unfinished note from Luke - “ It’s been lovely with you both “, really weird, what on earth does he mean? However, she has to put it to the back of her mind for now and fully concentrate on her job as a book editor.
Later that day there’s a breaking news story about a hostage situation in London, and Camilla is still worrying about Luke’s whereabouts seeing as he hasn’t answered any of her texts. She doesn’t have to wait long, as the police arrive to inform her that Luke is caught up in the siege, but he’s not a hostage - no, that doting father, excellent writer, the man with a sunny outlook on life is actually the gunman!
This is a great storyline as Camilla’s mundane life descends into a complete nightmare - with the accompanying tension, fear, twists and turns and the raw emotion that Ms McAllister always manages to elicit! Would definitely recommend.
*I was invited to read ‘Famous Last Words’ by the publisher and have given an honest unbiased review in exchange *
Camilla (Cam) is dropping her infant daughter Polly off at daycare for the first time and returning to her job as a literary agent after months away for maternity leave. So, it seems particularly out of character for her husband Luke to not be there that morning to see them off.
In his place is a cryptic note. One side reads “If anything” but it’s been crossed out. The other side says “It’s been so lovely with you both. Lx.”
She sends him a message. No reply.
She sends another. Silence.
Cam has a pit in her stomach-a feeling of dread.
And, then everything happens at once as the Police are outside her office as BREAKING NEWS comes across the television screens. A hostage situation is developing in London and the Police have arrived to tell her Luke is involved—not as a hostage-but as the gunman.
And, the hostage negotiator, Niall, wants her at the scene.
This story unfolds in three parts. The pace of Act One, “The Siege” is LIGHTNING FAST and I felt every one of Cam’s emotions from shock to bewilderment as she tried to make sense of the situation.
The second part dragged just a tiny bit for me, as the narrative became very introspective as both Cam and Niall dealt with the fall out from the day that would change both of their lives forever.
And, in part three the pace picks up again as this very CLEVER story came together and we learn the TRUTH about what happened that day. Sure, some suspension of disbelief is necessary but the characters are so well drawn that this story feels plausible despite that.
This is definitely one of the better stories that I have read lately in the THRILLER/SUSPENSE category, and I have no hesitation in recommending it!

This was a buddy read with my friend Ceecee. Be sure to watch for her amazing review for additional insight!
Thank You to William Morrow for the gifted copy provided through NetGalley. As always, these are my candid thoughts.
Famous Last Words is my second read by McAllister (I thought Wrong Place Wrong Time was okay) and my favourite so far. I liked Cam, it was well-paced, and I did not figure out what was going on at all.
Well, okay, one twist was obvious, but it actually didn't tell you anything about the mystery at the root of the story.
Cam and her husband, Luke, have a close, loving relationship, careers they enjoy, and a baby daughter who is their entire world. Everything they ever wanted. But one morning, Cam wakes to find a strange note and no Luke. Something feels off, but it isn't until she is at work later that the police turn up. Her beloved husband has taken several people hostage in London.
I won't offer up any more of the plot, but what emerges is a baffling mystery. How can this man-- who's always been so warm, laid back and loving --do such a thing?
Cam starts to question everything, especially what happened in the weeks leading up to the hostage situation. Did Luke's behaviour change? And if so, why? How could she have been so wrong about him?
A quick, engaging read, and also a surprisingly thoughtful and astute portrait of being both a new mother and an introvert. My favourite quote is kinda a spoiler:
That only happens to other people. That is of course, until it comes knocking at your door! It’s Cam’s first day back at work following a lengthy maternity leave. All she just needs now is a loving pep talk from her husband Luke and she’ll be ready to hit the ground running.
Only he’s nowhere to be found and not answering his phone or texts. As she readies their daughter to drop off at daycare she finds a very short and disturbing note from Luke. She has no time to dwell on it, she must get ready to face the day…alone.
Once at work, and still not able to reach Luke, Cam catches a glimpse of a T.V. in the background covering a current hostage situation. Suddenly the police are in front of her! “Oh no! This can’t be happening! Is Luke a hostage?”😱
Bad news for Cam. It’s so much worse than that!
Wow! This book grabbed me right from the start! I flew through it! Simply unputdownable! I had no idea how Luke got caught up in this situation. And all (well most of) my guesses were wrong.
Gillian McAllister did an amazing job with the lead characters. Told from the perspectives of Cam and the hostage negotiator, Niall. I enjoyed each POV equally and how this fateful day affected their lives.
I’ve only read a few of her previous works, but this was by far my favorite (so far). And you know I’ll be reaching for some of her previous reads sitting on my shelf.
A must-read!! When some of my favorite reviewers rated this book high, I could not wait to get my hands on it. Turned down by NetGalley :( I took my chance with Edelweiss Books and the same publisher and scored!! So thank you Edelweiss Books and William Morrow for this fabulous book in exchange for my honest review! A big day for Cam to go back to work as a literary agent, after a maternity leave with her baby Polly. Her husband, Luke, must have left early for work, leaving a cryptic note. When she returns to work, she sees breaking news about a hostage situation. She calls and texts her husband with no response. Her fear kicks in thinking the worse has happened. When police arrive at her door, she finds her husband is in the hostage situation, but he is the gunman. A nightmare unfolds with the unknown and fear in a phenomenal style. Most of the book is the replay of that day after her husband disappears and the hostages are found dead. What could have led to his behavior when he is one of the kindest men she has ever met? The hostages negotiator, Nial, plays a courageous and unwavering part. He is his own worst enemy when he recounts for years that day and above all lost his wife who would not stand by his job. Seven years later new evidence resurfaces that will keep you glued to the pages... until the final twists pierces your imagination. Secret after secret, cryptic notes and the dark web uncover some darker evidence. Once again...a phenomenal book... I applaud Gillian McAllister!!
I'm at the point where I’m about to give up on mysteries and thrillers. Too often, the writing is either atrocious (think The Silent Patient) or just plain boring (Ruth Ware comes to mind). But occasionally, there are writers like Shari Lapena or Freida McFadden, who, while not Pulitzer contenders, can still deliver a fun, suspenseful ride that keeps you guessing.
Then came Gillian McAllister's latest. It had a promising premise: Cam and Luke, a married couple with a newborn baby girl, Poppy, have their lives turned upside down when Luke leaves behind a cryptic note that reads, "It's been lovely wuth you both, Lx."
From there, the story kicks off. Cam returns to her high-profile publishing job after nine months of maternity leave (there are a few interesting publishing-related tidbits here if you're familiar with the industry). The entire world witnesses a hostage situation on TV, where the main suspect is—surprise—her husband, Luke. The setup had potential, and the initial shock is gripping.
However, the rest of the book, which comprises about 65% of the story, drags on and becomes surprisingly dull. The plot shifts focus from the suspense to what feels more like a love story. Cam is in disbelief that her husband could ever do anything so horrifying, and we spend a lot of time in her head as she goes over how much she still loves him. We also get the perspective of Niall, the hostage negotiator, whose personal issues (cue therapy and a broken heart) felt clichéd and unnecessary. Cam’s bond with her sister, who is also dealing with domestic problems, seems irrelevant in the context of the larger, more urgent situation.
While we do spend time trying to unravel what really happened that day, much of the story is bogged down by Cam's inner monologue about her love for Luke. It's as if McAllister was torn between writing a thriller and a romance, and the latter definitely falls flat.
The writing itself felt mediocre, with some scenes so irrelevant that I ended up skimming through to the end—and didn’t miss much. I had figured out the twist well before the final act.
If this book is the one that makes me swear off these formulaic, typical mystery/thrillers, so be it. There are plenty of other genres to explore. That said, it’s hard not to feel disappointed by what could have been an engaging, high-stakes story.
A missing husband, a new mom, and a cryptic note all lead to one heck of a suspenseful ride!!
My third by this author and my favorite.
The wife, Cam has a dream job where she gets to read novels for a living. She drops her baby off at daycare and goes to work after being on maternity leave, but her day takes a terrifying turn when she sees Breaking News flash about a siege in Central London.
The story takes off quickly and my heart skipped a beat more than once. Some parts read like an action movie, chapters with little cliff hangers made it impossible to stop!
I don't want to say to much because there are many surprises and spine tingling moments. I don't want to give anything away. Just read it if you enjoy suspense and rooting for some likeable characters!
Thanks to NG for my ARC! This one is out on Feb 25, 2025
This book starts off with excitement and doesn't let up until the end. Cam is heading back to work at her publishing job after being off on extended maternity leave. She finds it odd that her husband Luke isn't home when she leaves to drop their daughter off at daycare, but he left a note so she's not terribly concerned. Shortly into her work day, news of a siege comes across notifications. A man has taken three people hostage--and it is Luke. The second perspective is that of Niall, the hostage negotiator. He knows that he needs to figure out why Luke has taken these people hostage--before it's too late.
I loved the twists in this book. Just when I thought I had things figured out, up comes another twist. There's a bit of suspension of disbelief needed in a few parts, but overall it's not too bad and works within the confines of the story. Cam's job is every book lover's dream, and the way it's incorporated provides extra interest.
I truly enjoyed this clever mystery, the premise is very unique and exciting about how it all plays out. If you're looking for a suspenseful, surprising novel, then you won't go wrong with this choice.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, all opinions are my own.
A taut, pacey thriller that rewards down to the last page. A frazzled literary agent just returning to work after maternity leave has her first day back at the office interrupted by a nightmare: her affable husband has apparently taken three hostages in a London warehouse and is threatening to shoot them. The story unfolds from the dual viewpoints of the bewildered wife and the determined negotiator brought in to de-escalate the siege, which does not end as anyone involved planned...as becomes even more evident years later, as unsolved mysteries and lingering questions still hang in the air: what makes a loving husband and father turn hostage taker and criminal? Finding out the answer had me turning pages long into the night.
A stunning mix of fast-paced thriller and deeply poignant suspense along with a bit of drama thrown in, Famous Last Words unsurprisingly blew me away. After all, Gillian McAllister has always been one of my all-time favorite authors. Known for her complex timelines, mind-blowing twists, and well-developed characters, I was thrilled to find all of the above in her newest novel. This time around, though, it not only started off with an almighty bang, but it had my fingers flying through the pages faster and faster as I was given whiplash like never before.
From the moment that we were introduced to the dual POVs as well as a third anonymous source, my attention was undeniably piqued. Interwoven into an intricate plot that kept me guessing despite some very rigorous armchair sleuthing, the first explosive 100 pages bled into a somewhat slower paced last two-thirds which led me to fall for both distinctly voiced narrators in turn. Both sincere and vividly drawn, they made the book come to life as we learned how that one pivotal day impacted their lives in all of its sharp, realistic, and heartbreaking glory.
As with all of this author’s novels, however, the magic was in the thought-provoking yet shocking reveals. Shifting the entire narrative after a series of earth-shattering twists, there was no way of beating this writing maestro at her own game. Via immersive storytelling that had me ignoring everything around me including my family, I breathlessly inhaled word after word as multiple secrets blew up on the page. An addictive page-turner that kept me on the edge of my seat, this novel yet again proved that Ms. McAllister is the best of the best.
All in all, thanks to a well-plotted storyline, clever hidden motivations, and a metafiction vibe, this book easily stacks up as one of my favorites. You see, from the highly charged hostage situation to the revolving door of introspections, there was no end to the layers of this finely written novel. And let me tell you, there is so much more that I can’t even mention lest I let slip a spoiler. So grab a copy today if you even remotely love thrillers. Clever, bingeable, and packed full of palpable tension, there simply wasn’t a thing not to love. Rating of 5 stars.

“If anything . . . It’s been so lovely with you both. Lx”
Gillian McAllister is a phenomenal writer and I have really enjoyed several of her thrillers. Unfortunately, Famous Last Words was a bit of a let down for me.
New mother Camilla wakes up one day to find her husband Luke is missing. After locating a cryptic note he left her, she learns that he has taken two hostages at gunpoint. Does Camilla really know her husband?
The book is separated into four sections. The first introduces the hostage situation, grabbed my interest immediately, and drew me into Camilla’s story. However, the middle really dragged and was such a slow burn that I really struggled to get through it. The third section picked up a bit, but I found the twist predictable and really had to suspend my belief.
This character driven novel successfully emotes palpable grief. The two love stories are the best parts of the plot, but that is where I got bored. I don’t really enjoy reading romance novels, and this book relied heavily on those storylines. I can understand why it might resonate with some readers, but coupled with the easily predictable twists, it quickly fizzled for me.
3.5/5 stars rounded down

Cam’s husband, Luke, is missing from the house when she wakes up on her first day back to work after maternity leave. Turns out he's involved in a hostage situation nearby. It can't be her sweet, darling husband...what is going on?
In steps, Niall, the hostage negotiator. He makes a decision that'll haunt him for years.
Really enjoyed this one. I was gripped and engaged pretty much throughout. There were a few nice surprises, but I did have the big hoopta figured out, but that didn't take away from my enjoyment at all. Can't say too much more about it.
Narration notes: I did not listen to this one, but am just giving the info above for reference.
Oh wow, this was such an enjoyable read! I loved how it kept me full of questions, with answers being revealed at just the right time. It starts off with a bang and instantly grabbed my attention, then shifts into more of a slow burn, but there’s this constant sense of unease that keeps you hooked. None of the reveals were super shocking,at least to me, but they were all still really fun and pieced together well with the clues we got along the way.
I really appreciated how easy it was to care about all the characters. Everyone was going through something, and that added so much emotional weight to the story. I found myself genuinely rooting for all the good folks to find peace and get the happy ending they deserved.
Sure, there were a few slow moments here and there, but overall it’s a solid mystery/thriller. Definitely looking forward to checking out more of McAllister’s work!
A woman is devastated to find her husband is involved in a hostage situation and the police want her help.
Told through multiple perspectives, including the hostage negotiator, I had an immediate connection to this intense storyline and the characters. The storyline is pulse pounding with suspense from the first to last chapter. This was edge-of-your-seat, hold-your-breath tension that kept me guessing.
The author dives deep into the intricacies of new motherhood which was an intriguing layer to the plot. The main characters work in the writing/publishing industry which added an extra element of enjoyment for me.
After the extreme intensity of the majority of the novel, the ending wrapped up too neatly for my liking, but I still loved the book as a whole. When I finished and reflected on the novel, I realized there is a strong thread of implausibility that centres the entire storyline, but I was so deeply wrapped up in the tension and suspense, that I didn’t care. It was a stand out thriller that was pure compulsively readable entertainment! Highly recommend!
Clever, twisted, intricately plotted with wonderful characters that you can root for - the perfect mix for a great thriller!
It’s Cam’s first day back at work - she works in publishing rooting out the best novels from the piles of submissions. In her own words she reads books for a living - what could be better??
It’s her baby’s first day in day care and she’s tense and anxious. Adding to this mix is the fact that her husband Luke is missing. She’s irritated but not too worried until she finds a note from him “it’s been lovely with you both”. She doesn’t understand but she goes ahead with her morning.
At the office not much later in the day she hears a breaking news story that there are hostages being held in a local warehouse. Sirens - the police - they are here to talk to Cam. Luke is the suspected gunman - HOW CAN THIS POSSIBLY BE?
Then we are off to turn pages and pages until the mystery is finally solved. A great description from the novel “This case continues to invert and invert, like a sand timer tipped this way and that the grains falling one way and then completely the other”.
If you’ve given up on thrillers - read this one - it’s the best I’ve read this year. With tension filled passages but also introspection from the characters I think you’ll love this one!
This is the author’s best novel yet, and she wrote it in 16 months, during which time she had a baby!!
I received an ARC of this novel from the publisher through Edelweiss. It was my pleasure to read and review this novel.
It’s the summer solstice and the first day of literary agent Cam’s return to work after a nine month maternity leave. She drops Polly off at her nursery but has a persistent niggling concern for her husband Luke. Where is he? There are vague recollections of a goodbye kiss in the early hours, she finds a cryptic odd note and in terms of text messages, it’s radio silence. She goes to work, tries to immerse herself in tasks but the dread creeps in and builds up… It’s that note. Then she hears the sirens, catches sight of breaking news on the TV screen in the office foyer, observes police officers outside in Kevlar vests, with which her world shatters in an instant.
…..And she’s back with quite a bang! I’ve loved Gillian McAllister‘s books since I read her debut novel ‘Everything but the Truth’ and she’s produced yet another gripping tale. Her novels feel so real and authentic with characters that are so well crafted that I feel like I’m in their shoes. Cam’s unease and escalating fears are palpable, her incredulity and shock are tangible as she uncover secret after secret and has to live with the consequences. Her life and that of others implode that day and watching how that unfolds is fascinating reading. The hot and perfect summer day with bright blue skies and scorching sun are matched by the red hot tension, cliffhangers and twists and turns some of which are jaw droppers.
It’s a novel which has weird, puzzling off notes from the start, things which don’t chime, they are misdirections and on several occasions I set off down blind alleys as the author has my mind working overtime and spinning in all directions. The mystery/conspiracy deepens, there are cryptic clues to unravel and when the truth finally emerges years later, it’s one I don’t see coming.
This is a terrific suspenseful thriller. Yes, there are a couple of things that require some suspension of disbelief and the final third is not quite as strong as the first two. However, there is so much that I will take away from this book. It’s a compelling demonstration of how lives can change in an instant, of how a nightmarish scenario can have an impact for years to come, it’s reflective as the main characters ponder their mistakes, there’s obsession too but overall it’s a heartbreaking love story. There’s also the love of a child who is indeed a ray of sunshine in a dark world, thus enabling Cam to put one foot in front of the other. Now, anyone that can pull all that off in an absorbing novel deserves five stars in my opinion!
With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Penguin Michael Joseph for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.
Many thanks to my friend Jayme for the buddy read. Did she feel the same as me? Be sure to check out her review.
second time trying to read a book by this author and i remained confused and kinda fascinated by her ability to come up with an intriguing plot while simultaneously having the dullest writing style. with both books i’ve read by her i stopped reading because i literally no longer care about who did what or why someone died.
Twists and turns are most certainly not in short supply in this latest McAllister novel. The charismatic and multidimensional characters pulled me in right out of the gate.
Unfortunately, when all the loose ends started coming together my enthusiasm took a nosedive. The big reveal was just too fantastical for me to buy into, and left me scratching my head.
The narration by Emilia Fox was fabulous. Her male voices are exceptional. Thank you.
Gripping, shocking, and hard to put down! Gillian McAllister delivered a gripping and brilliantly thought out storyline with Famous Last Words! I was instantly engrossed in the beginning of the book as Cam (Camilla) learns that her husband, Luke, is holding people hostage at gunpoint! She is utterly shocked as it is so out of character for him but then again him leaving in the morning without saying a word and only leaving a note behind, was out of character as well.
Holy Moly, this book took me on a wild ride as Niall, the hostage negotiator comes on the scene! I had no idea where this book was taking me and I had a lot of fun trying to figure out where this book was going, what was behind Luke's actions, and how things were going to wrap up! There were some jaw dropping moments, moments when I wanted to yell at the characters, and a moment when I wanted to slap my forehead when a reveal occurred that I felt that I should have seen it coming but didn't!
Clever, well thought out, thrilling, and hard to put down! I can't wait to read what Gillian McAllister writes next!
*A wonderful buddy read with Brenda~ The Sisters and Norma ~ The Sisters. Please read their reviews as well to get their thoughts on Famous Last Words!
Thank you to William Morrow and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
One minute your life is all gravy, the next it’s in absolute disarray!
21st June is the longest the day of the year and it about to be even longer for Camilla, when she wakes up and sees that her husband is missing. Spending most of the day trying to get in touch with him, she gets the shock of her life when police enter her workplace and tell her that her husband is in hostage situation. But he is not the victim he is the gunman!
I have read Wrong Place, Wrong Time by the same author and rated that book 3 stars and I’m now realizing why I can’t reach my full potential with this author. Just like WPWT, this book starts of hot and heavy, and I was sitting at the edge of my seat at the exhilarating turn of events. The plot is thrilling, and my nerves were shaken as if I was in Camilla situation.
Then we move onto Act 2 (seven years later) and it all went downhill from there. The pacing was so mid, and filler-y and I wasn’t enticed by anything happening and Camilla and her sister’s relationship wasn’t compelling enough to keep me intrigued.
I will say that the police procedural aspects/ chapters were interesting, and I enjoyed reading Niall the hostage negotiators chapters as he refuses to stop his mission on finding out what really was the deal with the hostage situation.
I could see where the book was heading and was proven correctly. The ending was as expected if not a bit extreme and I finished the book like ‘oh ok then’🤷🏾♀️
Don’t get me wrong, Gillian is a fantastic writer and knows how to draw a reader in initially but the thereafter just doesn’t seem to execute very well for me. Unfortunately, this was just an OK read for me.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ⋆。°✩pre read⋆。°✩ Oooooh weeee this sounds JUICY!!!! Finding out your husband is a gunman in a hostage situation! Hoping this one puts the Thrill in THRILLER!!! 🧡🧡🧡
Tense, gripping, unpredictable. Famous Last Words unfolds like a hostage negotiation itself—every word, every moment feels like it could tip the balance between disaster and resolution. This is a brilliantly crafted story that kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. Gillian McAllister weaves an intricate web of suspense with a storyline that’s so well thought out, it pulls you in and refuses to let go.
The story is divided into four parts, each with its own unique rhythm and intensity. Act One, “The Siege,” is an adrenaline-fueled opening that reads fast and feels incredibly palpable. I could sense every one of Camilla’s emotions—her shock, bewilderment, and desperate attempts to make sense of the chaos around her. While the pacing slowed a bit in the second part, it picked up again in the last two acts, culminating in a clever and satisfying conclusion.
What I loved most was how the dual perspectives played off each other so seamlessly, with both Camilla and Niall the negotiator adding depth and tension to the unfolding drama. Both characters brought raw emotion to the table, raising the stakes for entirely different reasons. Camilla’s desperation and confusion as a wife and mother were achingly real, while Niall’s vulnerability and calm determination as he navigated the crisis gave the story a steady yet deeply emotional heartbeat. Together, their perspectives made the tension almost unbearable at times—in the best possible way.
I’ll admit, I didn’t know where this story was headed, and that’s part of what made it so engrossing. I was baffled, shocked, and constantly questioning everything. There were plenty of twists I didn’t see coming, but one reveal I did anticipate—and it was so satisfying to be right about it. I think you’ll know the one when you get there.
I thoroughly enjoyed how cleverly this story came together and loved learning the truth about what really happened that day. This book is an emotional rollercoaster, exploring trust, betrayal, and the lengths we’ll go to for the ones we love. If you enjoy stories with high stakes and characters who feel achingly real, you need to pick this one up.
Expected Publication Date: February 25, 2025
I received a copy of this book from the publisher through Edelweiss and totally recommend it!
*A wonderful Witches Words read that I had the pleasure of buddy reading with Brenda and Debra. Be sure to check out their reviews that I have provided below as well to see their thoughts on Famous Last Words!
I’m fixing to stop trusting these Goodreads reviews because what the boring shit was this? The first act was intriguing but once you get into act two, it goes down hill, truly. Boring. Meh.
Buckle up buttercup because you’re about to go on a wild ride! One you can’t put down!
Alright Gillian McAllister, I’m a new fan! Hooked and already purchased three more of her books! Guys, this is one you DEFINITELY need to add to your TBR if you’re a thriller fan!
Camillia goes back to work after maternity leave. Her whole world turns upside down when the police show up to tell her that her husband is involved in a hostage situation. Cam is shocked…… even more so when they tell her he is the gunman!!! What???????
Her phenomenal, loving and all around good husband, Luke would never do this. Would he? Why? What is going on?
I can’t spill anymore details or it would ruin the story. And what a story this one was! Just know that you’re in for quite the suspenseful treat! Thrilling and romantic all at the same time. Yep, you get two for one here!
Huge massive thanks to William Morrow, Gillian McAllister and NetGalley for the opportunity!
5 Stars!!!!! I just LOVED this one, and I read it in just two sittings and could barely put it down to sleep!! Absolutely nothing here is quite what it seems like & that’s the whole point. Features 3 time-frames & dual POV’s - the wife & the hostage negotiator, neither of who can move on from the events of the “siege”. There is a LOT of moving pieces to this one, but I felt it all just came together perfectly in the end. Will definitely keep this writer on my "auto" list 😊
3.5 rounded to 4 for GR! ofc my first physical read of 2025 was a thriller 🤪
imagine this: your husband is gone when you wake up. that’s odd, so you call and text him. no answer. where is he? then you go to the office and people are chattering about the news, so you look at the tv… and see your husband, holding three people hostage in a warehouse… at gunpoint 🤯😳
the beginning had me HOOKED. the premise and creativity with the plot was great, and i love her writing.
don’t let the rating fool you—i did enjoy this book! its prob my fave of hers too. the first 50% was pacing 4.5-5 stars for me. the backhalf is where it unraveled a bit, namely because the pacing realllllly slowed down and because i guessed two of the main twists 🙃 I guess reading 50+ thrillers a year will do that to ya sometimes!
i kept putting myself in the MC’s shoes bc the author did a great job of letting you really visualize and feel it all out.
i think the seige was over rather quickly and i wanted more of that. but i enjoyed the dual POVs and overall storyline. also loved how this one wasn’t 400+ pages 🥰
TLDR: a fun binge, but not a omgreaditrightnow thriller (in my opinion)
thanks to William Morrow for the gifted early copy!
