Better Than Revenge

Rate this book
When her football-player boyfriend and now ex lands the podcast job she’s been dreaming of, a girl takes matters into her own hands by enlisting the help of his nemesis to get revenge.

Seventeen-year-old Finley has only ever had one goal: to become a famous podcaster. This includes coming up with the perfect pitch to land her on her school's podcast team. But when her football-obsessed boyfriend, Jensen, decides to also try out—and uses her idea—she's left confused and betrayed.

Determined to get back at him, Finley and her friends try to find the perfect revenge scheme, but quickly discover that Jensen is almost-impossible to best. Keyword, almost

By chance, Finley discovers a knack for kicking and decides to take Jensen's spot on the football team. To help her train, she recruits Jensen's cute but conceited nemeses, Theo. Soon the two discover that their connection runs deeper than football. But Finley can't let herself get distracted, and Theo has secrets of his own. Is true love really better than the perfect revenge?

revenge: the most effective way to get over someone

🌷 I am disappointed !
alas, kasie west's books just aren't the same for me anymore. this was cute and entertaining, but the writing felt like a first draft, and the fmc had terribly bad judgement. the worst part was the story lacked any of the usual depth kasie adds to her books. can we go back to her real life people on book covers era!?

જ⁀➴ thank you to netgalley, for an arc in exchange for an honest review!

I had a lot of fun reading Better Than Revenge. Kasie West always writes sweet YA rom-coms, and I’m always here for that.

Finley has one major goal she’s been working toward throughout her high school career: to be on her school’s podcast. She’s worked hard, and her boyfriend, Jensen, knows just how hard. He also decides to try out at the last second and uses one of her ideas. How rude…

Finely decides she needs some revenge. Who better to help her than Jensen’s rival, Theo. Theo and Finley were amazing, and I loved them together. I also really loved the side story with her grandma and learning her story through Finley’s personal podcast. This book made me smile throughout and I truly enjoyed reading it.

For the longest time I thought I was done with YA, everything I read from this genre just didn’t work for me anymore. But now I’ve read two great YA books back to back, so maybe there’s hope for me yet.

Because this was such a good time, like it wasn’t perfect, but I had a smile on my face the whole way through and that’s what I want out of a romance.

Finley, the fmc, has big aspirations to become a podcaster. So she wants to get on the school podcast, but her boyfriend Jensen straight up steals her spot by also stealing her material for the audition. Which of course only leaves her with one option: revenge (and breaking up with him ofc).
So she decides to steal his spot as kicker on the football team. But to become the kicker she needs help and who’d be better suited to help than the former star kicker on the team, Theo. Who conveniently is also Jensen’s nemesis.

This was just a super fun read. The characters were great, I liked Finley a lot. Theo grew on me and her friends and family were a perfect addition.

The story basically covers three plot points: the revenge, the love story and Finley’s grandma’s (love) story. And all of that worked very well together. The revenge planning with her friends was funny, the love story was so cute, and surprisingly I even liked her grandma’s story.

Some things didn’t quite make sense to me, like why Finley was so obsessed with getting this podcast internship at the university. Like girl, there are millions of podcasts that probably started out in someone’s garage. Anyone can just start a podcast at any point, all you really need is a good idea and some sort of recording device. That was a bit strange to me.
Also, the grand gesture?! In front of the whole school? Who likes that? Also, who DOES that? Maybe I’m being dramatic, but I hate reading about grand gestures because it always sounds like such a nightmare to me. And the one in here wasn’t even that bad but still.. To quote Finley: You didn’t have to be so dramatic about it.

But these are just small things that didn’t really take away from the story too much.

Overall it was as cute and fun and lighthearted as the cover promised and I loved it.

I've enjoyed a number of books by this author, but this isn't one of them. While I completely agree with the overall message of the book - I don't have a vengeful bone in my body, writing a character like Jensen made me root for revenge throughout the whole book. That's how angry he made me.

So yeah, definitely not a pleasant reading experience for me. 2 stars for grandma's storyline.

I wasn't necessarily blown away by this one, but it was great insight into what happens when anger consumes us.

Better Than Revenge is the first Kasie West book that I've read in a while and while I did find aspects of it underwhelming, it does beautifully capture the consequences of allowing anger to consume us. Instead of the revenge plot revolving around cheating in a relationship, West focuses on a betrayal of a different kind which isn't something that we see very often in young adult contemporary books. I adored the side plot related to Finley's grandmother, and wished that it was explored in greater length. Alzheimer's and dementia are debilitating illnesses that impact not only the diagnosed individual, but also their loved ones. I'm not sure if West has experienced this before; however, as someone who has, I do believe she handled the topic with grace and compassion. Unfortunately, I wasn't super into the relationship dynamics between Finley and Theo; however, I do like the support system that formed between the two of them as they attempted to figure out her grandmother's past. If you're a reader that's into podcasts and contemporary romances, then this might be a hit for you! I'll be checking out more Kasie West books in the future.

thank you netgalley for the e-arc in exchange for an honest review!!

unfortunately, this book was not for me. i really wanted to like this book, and i did in the beginning but by the end of the book i was just glad it was over. while i understand that this is a ya novel, i feel like the issues/conflicts in this were very elementary/middle school problems. there was also just a lot of random events happening and taking place all over the book that had nothing to do with the main plot. also the writing was more like "telling" rather than "showing".

I think if a book is written by Kasie West. It's bound to be a banger.

This was literally adorable. From the plot, To the characters, Everything was straight cotton candy fluff.

I love the character development in this so much, Because I felt really connected to each of the characters and loved seeing them progress throughout the book. Not to mention how perfectly paced the romance is. It didn't feel rushed nor extremely slow, Just the perfect amount.

Also can we take a moment to say how cute the grandma is?! Like I love how she is included in the podcast, along with her entire backstory. It was really clever and heartfelt on how this progressed throughout the storyline. Not to mention had me hooked between chapters.

I feel like this entire book reminds me of a warm vanilla sundae on a beach. Not sure why but it just does. Maybe it's Theo-

ANYWAYS, I def recommend this and would 100% read it again.

YA Contemporary

Another cute and fluffy read by Mrs. West. Her books always have some sort of life lesson the main character has to learn by the end of the book. Kind of reminds me of old episodes of Full House- you can almost hear the music start playing at the end where the character realizes they messed up and have to come to terms with their mistake.

Content ⚠️
-no language
-kissing only
-dementia
-revenge trope (the lesson)
-two male characters are mentioned to be in a relationship with one another

Finley and Theo were so cute! I was here for the banter! I laughed so many times. Her grandma was the sweetest thing, I loved hearing her story of her own romance and past. It was such a beautiful thing. It was interesting and kept me thoroughly entertained. The Lil twist near end and how it fully ended was lovely. I loved this one!

Kasie West delivered yet another charming, swoon-worthy YA romance with Better Than Revenge! This book had everything I love about her writing—endearing characters, sharp banter, and a romance that made me grin from ear to ear.
Finley was a determined and relatable protagonist, and I completely understood her frustration when Jensen stole her podcast idea. Her quest for revenge started off as playful fun, but what I really loved was how it became a journey of self-discovery. Watching her challenge herself by joining the football team and proving everyone wrong was so satisfying, and her growth over the course of the story was one of my favorite aspects.
Then there was Theo—Jensen’s so-called nemesis and the perfect partner-in-crime. He was cocky, a little mysterious, and completely irresistible. The chemistry between him and Finley was electric from the start, filled with witty back-and-forths and some seriously adorable moments. Their relationship developed naturally, and I loved how Theo pushed Finley to believe in herself beyond just getting revenge.
While the plot was fun and full of laugh-out-loud moments, I did wish there was a bit more depth to some of the conflicts, especially with Jensen. The revenge plotline was entertaining, but I wanted to see even more of Finley processing her emotions beyond just trying to one-up him. That being said, the book still had a great message about self-worth, standing up for yourself, and discovering what truly matters.
Better Than Revenge was a lighthearted, feel-good read that perfectly blended romance, humor, and a bit of girl power. If you love Kasie West’s signature style of sweet, swoony YA, this one won’t disappoint!

Pretty good! It was easy to follow along with and was a very light hearted read. I didn’t feel like I was lost at any point and I just enjoyed it. This is a very up to date book with people all wanting to podcast now but I didn’t feel like it was all that mattered if that makes sense. In the beginning maybe but in the end I’m glad she was able to realize there are other ways to do things. I also liked that Kasie West didn’t give us a way in the future update with everything being perfect and working out. I lik that ccshe left it off with it being like everything is good right now and that’s okay, we will take it day by day. Overall this was a really enjoyable book and I definitely recommend!!

Kasie West’s last few releases had been a miss for me and I was starting to think I was outgrowing her books. However, Better Than Revenge changed my mind and KW is back to being one of my favorite YA authors! The vibes were so similar to her older books and I enjoyed it so much.

I really liked the FMC Finley. She goes through a lot in this book, but it was great to read about her maturing and developing into a better version of herself. All the moments that involved her plotting revenge on her douchebag ex-boyfriend was also so much fun. And the fact that she never lets her ex walk all over her is the best. She constantly unleashed her anger (rightfully deserved!) on him and it was absolutely satisfying.

As for the MMC Theo, I adored him. He was so charming and sweet. Finley and Theo had amazing chemistry and their banter was everything. I was giggling and smiling so much whenever they were together. They had such a sweet and cute romance which is what I’m looking for whenever I read a YA romance book.

All in all, I had a great time reading this book and it got me excited for the author’s next release!

🎀 ༘⋆゚꒱ i felt nothing. no emotion towards any of the characters or romance EXCEPT the grandma and andrew. that was the only time i was interested (hence the 1.5 stars). other than that, i did not care one OUNCE. i just wanted it to be over. there was no depth whatsoever, which normally is not the case with kasie west. a lot of her older novels have lots of depth and complex characters, even sunkissed, a newer release, HAD DEPTH!! so i genuinely want to know what happened when we switched to the cutesy cartoon covers😭. switching to characters, once again, i did not care! i lwk forgot the fmc’s name until my sister reminded me that it was “finley”. the revenge plot line w theo was literally so boring like “bestie!!!! i do not care!!!!” there was no tension between her and theo, i did not care at all when they kissed. i actually PREDICTED their 3rd act breakup, even tho the book was almost over. but they still got back together dw🤗🤗ALSO OMG HER EX!! chat wasn’t even that bad of a dude. like i get why finley wanted to get revenge on him, but she lwk kinda self-centered😭her exact reaction was “oh no! he stole my dream!” SO SAD :( like bestie you’re not even a senior?? like there’ll be other times??

• anywho, thanks for reading my rant besties🙃

Relatable, believable, and sympathetic characters were the draw for this romance.

Highlights were the way the author wove together humor with realistic situations and issues, using the love story of Finley's grandmother to bring it all together.

The romance develops at a believable pace, nicely balanced with the podcasts about the love story. Altogether a lovely read.

⇨ 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 . ݁𝜗𝜚₊⊹
it was cute as always but probably my least favorite kasie west book :(
also the grandma’s story side plot was so fun!

⇨ 𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐭 . ݁𝜗𝜚₊⊹
this was my main problem with the book. the whole revenge plot. it was just icky to read about, the main character was so consumed with revenge and wanting to make their ex suffer. In the end she learned her lesson, but not well enough imo.

⇨ 𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 . ݁𝜗𝜚₊⊹
”Do you know how long I’ve wanted to kiss you?”
“Three weeks?”
“Longer than that. And it was worth the wait.”
⑅ᱸ⁎⁺˳ .ᐟ.ᐟ
the romance was SO cute though. like their first kiss?! I was about to scream I was so giddy. theo was so so sweet and I loved him so much. I didn’t even mind the third act break up in this one.

so yeah, if you don’t mind the BIG theme of revenge, I’d recommend!
(but if you do have Christian values, like do unto others as you would have done to you, and vengeance belongs to the Lord, I would not recommend)

content considerations:
romance: descriptive kissing, crushes, high school dating
language: I don’t remember any
other:
two finley’s best friends were in a male x male relationship, and while they were nice characters, their relationship and sexuality was commented on quite often.
parties, (maybe) underage drinking

We love a good revenge+enemies to lovers story

I hadn't heard that Kasie West had released another book, but when I found out I was RUNNING to get my hands on a copy of it. To date I've only been let down by one of her books, so I had high expectations for this. Needless to say that it surpassed those expectations and I was pleasently surprised. Its felt like Kasie West was falling off her game through the last few books but this was exactly what I wanted from her. Fluffy, cute, good characters, good makeouts, and banter. What more could a girl ask for?

While I miss her old covers so much, this cover was adorable and matched the tone of the book so well! The tone of her book was less deep than her others have been in the past, but the book was still super good regardless. I loved the romance and their banter?! It was so good, I loved the way he loved her. The sports and podcasting aspects were super fun and I loved the way Kasie West incoorporated them into the book!

I can't find quotes for this anywhere, and since I listened to the audiobook its no help, so this review is rather empty, hahaha!
