"But that day for the first time in my life I met a hero."
HOW DOES THIS SERIES KEEP GETTING BETTER AND BETTER?!
I am once again blown away by how engaged I am with this series! Though this volume, SO many amazing characters showed up, especially my boy Ichikawa!! THE WAY HE SHINED! I loved getting his backstory and seeing his motivations! He is amazing and only continues to be more so with every new volume!
I also LOVED seeing more into Mina's "mind" so to speak! Though that last chapter with her felt something like straight out of a horror manga…
I deeply deeply enjoyed reading this volume as it brought me a lot of personal joy because I love the third division so much and seeing everyone come back and absolutely slay these kaiju was EPIC! Everyone really had a grand entrance and hope they will continue to be on these pages throughout this upcoming battle!
Speaking of, I truly can't wait to see what happens next because I think Kaiju No. 9 is about to experience his downfall, and I am more than ready to see it!
Still one of my favorite ongoing shonen series right now!
"So get out there. Be nervous…screw up… and take a plunge with peace of mind. You'll prove to be more than good enough that way."
I grabbed this off my shelf of books checked out from the library as I set out for my dog's daily walk. A few pages in I realized I had already read this volume and had gotten it again accidentally.
I had a back-up book available, but this one pays off so well in the end that I just went ahead and read it again. And I still got choked up at all the same parts.
Soooo goooood!!!
ORIGINAL REVIEW - June 26, 2025
Kafka Hibino has an impossible decision to make: save hundreds of innocents or save the one he loves most.
This volume really hammers home the themes of teamwork and trust as Hibino realizes it may not be his decision alone to make.
My favorites are definitely Hoshina and Reno. I love all of the different dynamics and how everyone is working as one team now. My favorite part has definitely been all of the relationship developments between the characters. So much is happening and it’s crazy.
I swear I barely started reading this volume and it was already over. Even though the battle is being drawn out a bit through these volumes, it feels appropriate given the Kaiju that are being faced. The graphics are great and I love how much action is evident in the action scenes while still keeping lines crisp and making the scene not look messy. Absolutely would recommend this series.
man the other people in the other divisions are DAWGS. NONE OF THEM NARUMI BUT... i guess they cool or whatever. i love them all so much and all of their dynamics and seeing just how strong they have become. LIKE RENO. YOU ARE THE SHIT. and the ending?? kafka GO AT IT. GOOOO KING
once again just such a banger perfect pacing and brought back so many characters into the spotlight, curious to how it all will end in the next couple volumes.
I'm still mad, though because it seems that every manga I pick up, starts as goofy and with plenty of comedy to balance out the action-packed scenes. Sure, I wasn't under any delusions when starting Kaiju no. 8, I knew that there was a lot of plot and that the world the characters live in is riddled with monsters and the fights will get more serious as the story progresses.
Well, duh, that's why it sparked my interest but the first few episodes and chapters were so hilarious and crazy, I laughed my ass off and I though that damn, perhaps I finally got shonen where I won't be suffering from heartbreak and won't get even more grey from stress and anxiety.
Should have known better...
Admittedly, it's nowhere near as dark and depressing as Attack on Titan - few shonen can ever reach that level, and if they do, I'll kindly stay away. One trauma is enough, thank you. - and it didn't have the same insane 180 as Jujutsu Kaisen but GODDAMN! What must a girl do to catch a break here?! Why all the amazin shonen manga recently make me fall in love with them, get all addicted and then continue to wreak havoc on my sanity and my heart?!
I appreciate the bits of humour here and there, it's such a great counterbalance to the edgy and gritty story that is getting more serious and darker volume by volume. It's such a treat to see that despite eveything, the characters remain the same assholes I fell in love with in the first place.
Don't get me wrong - the character development is stellar here. They all grow so much and while a small part of me scoffs that their plot armour is thicker than Kylie Jenner's make-up, the bigger part tells her to shut up and is happily along for the wild ride. They have to adapt quickly, they have to progress and push forward without stopping because that's the nature of the world they live in. The monsters won't stop coming; the monsters won't stop evolving, thus our heroes must too. It makes sense for the medium and genre this manga is - and I. AM. EATING. IT. UP!
The best part about this series, though? Inarguably, the relationships. When I first eased into Kaiju no. 8, I didn't expect to fall so hard for both the manga and the characters, nor did I expect they would be sending me into cardiac arrest not just due to the intense fights, but also due to the heartwarming bonds they share with each other. Kafka na Reno were steady from the start, I love their little comedy due and I would gladly go to their stand up show because never failed to crack me up. Gradually, the others slipped in and I was convinced this will be the kind of situation like in trial dystopian fantasy where they are all trying to surpass one another and rise to the top, no matter how many others they have to drag down first.
Not gonna lie, the training chapters got me worried. I hated Kikoru from the start... And then that little pigtail brat grew on me. Her dynamic with Kafka, and when you learn more of her backstory. She's my badass baby now and I'm a mama bear ready to chomp down on anyone who attacks her. Speaking of badass girls, Mina is a QUEEN and we STAN the captain in this house.
And speaking of babies... Look, it's no secret that I'm a slut for fictional men but Kaiju no. 8 made me into even a bigger book whore than I've been. First, the manga design of Reno captured my eye... ...then daddy vice-captain Hoshina appeared and I was a goner... ...then Narumi showed up and I slowly started losing my mind... ...and in the latest chapters even Kafka started looking really damn fine...
I've either been stuck in front of my laptop for too long and fried my brain, or the mangaka is toying with me.
Anyway, this mangas has been a really nice and more than welcome surprise, and it came in the right moment when I was feeling hopeless, and craved something that would hit me and fill the void somehow. Just as AoT did all those years ago. Perhaps that's why I fell so hard - because Kaiju no. 8 had the right timing and I grasped at the escape it emobodied as a woman starved.
Either way, I still think this is a highly enjoyable and imaginative shonen manga that fully deserves all the hype. It just keeps getting better and while I can spot similarities with other popular shonen in it, it still manages to stand on its own and stand apart from them. For me, a 90s girl, it also carries a hint of nostalgia because it reminds me of original Godzilla and mosnters films that I grew up with; and it's also so refreshing to have a manga where proper adults are the main stars of the show. Thanks the that, the vibe is really mature and it carries a certain hope than you can still achieve and make a difference even if you are in your late 20s or early 30s.
Don't let the society fool you that life is over once you're out of college - this series is about monsters and the struggle for survival and yet, I can't help but feel hopeful after reading it. Your dreams are only ever gone when you stop fighting for them; as long as you've got the resolve and nerve, it doesn't matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop...
It's been a while since I read the previous volume of Kaiju No.8, so jumping into the volume in the middle of a fight is kind of an intense open. This series continues to be so, so good to read. The characters are interesting, I really like the fact that there's a variety of ages among them (I've pointed out so many times that I love that Kafka is a 30-something year old man). The monster designs are almost always great to look at. Overall, the art is beautiful, and the fight scenes are always interesting to look at. Safe to say that I'm a fan of this series!
This manga is so freaking good. I swear. Can’t believe i have subjected myself to the weekly painful wait 😭 But i just wanna say I love these characters so much. They brought me tears and laughters, and they just made my day. Reading up until here in less than a day 😭 You can guess how good it is. Cannot wait to get the anime adaptation!!
My fav character is probably Hoshina and Kikoru 😭 So much depth to these characters.
The arrival of the Third Division to help almost got me teary eyed. I love the development of their friendship/relationship. I also love that each character has his/her own shining moment. Also, a bit of emphasis on Ichikawa and his brotherhood with Kafka. I know it's nothing special since it's not new in mangas or anime, but I really still enjoyed reading about them.
(first book of 2025 and I'm giving it five stars? wow?)
Great build up to the final battle between Kafka and #9 as we see all of the supporting caste coming in with huge upgrades including Reno who is finally showing off his new Kaiju weapon. I also like that their role is trying to get Kafka to #9 who has summoned an army of Kaijus to keep Kafka away while he absorbs Mina. It is great and I do like that even Mina's Tiger gets a chance to shine.
