3.5/5.0

Every time I open up another installment of this series I question why. There isn’t anything that really makes it stand out. In fact, up until this point, the heroine has been so TSTL that it’s a miracle I haven’t thrown the book (tablet) at the wall and walked away. BUT… there is just something cozy and comforting in this world and its characters. The community as a whole, their relationships… I guess the easiest way to explain it is this series has heart. And, in this particular story, Bunny is actually a lot smarter, as well. Maybe she really did learn something at the police academy (previous book)!

SOPE… it’s not rocket science, but it is a sweet, easy (Albeit frustrating at times) UF series.

The sixth book in the Portlock series has action and adventure as Bunny is on the case! Also, there are several more made up reason on why people call her Bunny. I enjoyed this book as much as I have the others and am looking forward to the next book!

Phenomenal urban fantasy series.

This series is totally addictive. It's near impossible to put the books down once you start. I can't wait to start the next book.

Bunny and Sidnee have returned to Portlock, but they have little time to rest and settle in. A murder at the local mine has the Nomo’s office scrambling. The dwarves who mostly run the mine are convinced the resident hag, an earth elemental, is responsible. Bunny and her fellow cops are not so sure. Of course things are more complicated than they at first seemed, and Bunny finds herself up against some old foes.

This latest book in the Portlock series gives us plenty of what makes it so engrossing, with growing relationships between Bunny and Connor and the whole wonderful cast of characters. Bunny is growing both personally and professionally, but this particular foe is not easy to defeat, and the book ends with someone in peril.

It always is hard waiting for the next book in this series.

A brand new mystery for the portlocks nomo team. An inspector is dead in the mines surrounding Portlock and it won't be the last.

Bunny and Sidnee have returned from the police academy to a crazy case. In this book Portlock gets further fleshed out. New landscapes to explore, a new case to solve and some intriguing and amazing new characters to be found.
Portlock is such an amazing community and Bunny is fully at home there now which I love for her. Having her fur family, Conner and the Nomo gang behind her, she is going from strength to strength. Not with incidents there to bring her bumping down to the ground. But not for long. I am loving her friendship with Sidnee, it's a little more lived in now and they are an amazing team. Gunner and Sig watch over their flock of found family with such care and love too.The banter as always is on point. I am so invested in this series, I just have to say the ending of this book had me needing the next one immediately!! I can't even. These guys can write!!!!

📖Favourite quote: You can cope with anything for fifteen seconds, right? Except maybe decapitation.

Bunny is at it again. Called back from the academy, but now, as a full-fledged officer, she has a murder to solve. Not just any murder though, one that appears may have been committed by the Hag that lives in the mines. But Bunny has a gut feeling, and we've learned from previous stories, Bunny's gut isn't to be ignored. With her friends and her mate at her side, they are off to determine if the murderer is the sugar craving Hag or if this is something entirely different.
I really enjoyed this story, lots of action from page one, and getting to see more of our favorite characters. Fluffy and Shadow, of course, are there to lend assistance or cause trouble, as need be, but still as steady as always. I love the team and family Bunny has made here.

"May you live in interesting times” is actually a curse, isn’t it?’ ‘It certainly feels like it at times, but afterwards, you know that those challenges we face actually define us and make us stronger than ever. Dark times just mean that the light is coming. And it always comes, as sure as the sun.’

This was a great installment and I liked Matilda.

The pros of this series remain that things that I've liked since the beginning: Bunny (aka the Fanged Flopsy 😅), the town, the supporting characters etc. I especially like that in a town full of powerful supernaturals, their human contingent aren't just these non-powered second class citizens. In fact the character of Thomas is as scary and lethal as any supe.

The only downside I an feeling is that the series introduced a series long big bad who seems to be behind all of the their 'cases of the week.' And only the mini-bosses get caught, while thee big bad has a lot, a LOT of plot armor. I wish if there had to be a big bad that they would only pop up intermittently.

But I am still rocking with it.

Another supernatural creature and more trouble in Portlock

Just back from the Academy and a battle with the rogue MIB group Bunny is immediately dumped into a murder in the local mine and discovers angry dwarves and a creature new to her, a hag. The dwarves who both hate and fear the hag are sure she’s responsible for the murder, especially when a second murder occurs. Bunny isn’t so sure.

It’s non-stop action in this book and it ends on a cliffhanger so I’m bummed I have to wait several months for the next book!

I just finished reading this book and am so freaking angry: I want the next book now!! LOL! I, of course, was so happy seeing this new book because Bunny and her gang just make me so darn happy, and this latest doesn’t disappoint…ok, ok, I was a little upset at the end, but it’s a good upset. LOL! Not only was the mystery engaging and interesting, but I loved how the gang is so much like family by all taking care of each other and being so loving. This latest is well-written, fun, suspenseful, and above all a wonderful addition to the series. More, please. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

Okay tech fail just wiped all the witty scathing commentary i had for this book so now you’re going to get the abridged version.

1. Bunny (such a stupid name) is so young. The way she acts and talks makes her seem so incredibly young. Too young frankly.

2. The constant unprofessional behaviour. Sex in the office? Thomas wrapping his arm around Sidney’s waist while investigating a potential crime scene - which could have been done well but felt instead like no one thought she was capable of handling her job. Which proved to be a constant theme. Stop babying her.

3. The way Bunny and Connor talk felt so clunky and like watching two people who have never interacted try to act out a scene.

4. The plot. It was okay. I liked the hag. She had zero fucks to give.

5. Positive affirmations being dropped like I’d just been sat down on a therapist’s couch.

6. The tea. As a tea lover, i cannot express how irritating this obsession was. I get it, she’s British. There are dozens of ways this can continue to be implied in the way she speaks and interacts or stumbles of cultural differences. But no. It is all about tea.

7. The way Bunny and Sidnee talk reinforced just how young they are and it annoyed the hell out of me.

It’s entirely possible i (at 36) and too old for this cosy, cheesy, cringy type of story.

There's so much I loved about this book, I'm not sure where to start...I loved the plot, there's a really cool hag called Matilda, who I enjoyed immensely, I loved the tension building up, I loved the mystery murder, I loved Shadow, his determination knows no bounds and the innuendoes had me, as well as Bunny, very intrigued as to what he actually was. I loved the portrayal of emotional turmoil I experience together with Bunny, Fluffy/Reggie sure had my heart in knots. It never ceases to amaze me at how well these two, individually esteemed, authors conive to bring a masterpiece time after time! This book is no exception... What a great start to the book, straight into intrigue of a murder and it ended with a bang! Brilliantly concealed until the very end. The red herrings lead me astray so perfectly, I DIDN'T see THAT coming, nor that, nor that...These authors are master red -herringers!

When the authors add to this already amazing cast of Connor, Fluffy, Shadow, Sidnee, and a whole host of fantabulous, genuine, awesome characters, my pleasure expands exponentially! Like the dwalves, so awesomely hardarsed, I couldn't help loving them for their obstinance, Leif being ass numero uno! And.... not only are we blessed with a cast who'll live in a part of me forever, we get an incredible plot that's fast paced, a mystery that's kept just out of reach, and a guarantee of wonkie emotions! And of course, EVERYONE loves Bunny, heck, one must be devoid of emotions not to! She's come a long way since she first came to Portlock, mostly due to the love that surrounds her, something she was dearly lacking in England but now she has Gunnar and Sigrid, who ooze love and acceptance of her, she has her friends, she has Fluffy and Shadow and most importantly, she has Connor.

Bunny and Sidnee hit the ground running, having graduated from the academy, they barely had time to pee before they're in the thick of it. A murder that makes no sense. A murder in a mine where the dwarves are kingpins. Well, maybe not kingpins but shoot, they are a tough, bunch! They own the majority of the mine and their word holds a lot of weight. I loved the dour faced dwarves, who have weird practices on the death of one of their own, challenging any law enforcement! We also have the added cuteness of the very exuberant Sidnee. What a wonderful friendship she and Bunny have, true BFF's and my goodness am I loving that Sidnee and Thomas thing! Even I had stars in my eyes. There were some super sweet and super romantic moments, where lovely warmth permeated me. Although, prize for bestest boyfriend ever goes to.... Connor! Yep, he's sexy, he's supportive, he's protective, he never oversteps, he honours her, he's the epitome of the ideal man! Sigh .. I'm kinda jealous of Bunny... I love how fabulously the authors presented the romance, warm and fuzzy, the most delightful banter, and a deep-seated rightness, with a humourous undertone.

Trying to make sense of the murders, yes, there are more than one, trying to proclaim Matilda's innocence to a bunch of obstinate dwarves, leads to a shocking revelation for Bunny and co. A faction of the government department, MIB, the Knight Stalkers are at the centre of things and boy, again I was blown out of the water by who was behind it all. The way it comes together is brilliant! Events and people who might seem to be random most definitely aren't! There is so much well crafted thought behind every event, every deed, every word! It's as though I was watching an unfurled string of wool bouncing back to a tightly wound ball. Magnificently captured! The prose is witty and fast and really very cleverly constructed, with ease; flowing superbly. Take this for instance, "I wondered if her faint had been a feint" and it's littered with lots of examples of clever, quick witted, fabulous banter. What a great quote this is, and how very true "bravery isn't about not being scared, it's about continuing even though you are scared"

The action, oh my word, the action! That confrontation, THAT battle, my pulse was pounding so hard in my veins I was surprised it didn't burst through my skin! Those last few chapters were heart in through adrenaline pumping! And in another genius move, these two brilliant authors mixed it up again, bringing in allies we've met before in a seamless, well placed manner. Stunningly done! Magic, shifters, a touch of necromancy, and the most likeable characters you'll encounter, make this book and series an exceptional performance achieved by extremely talented authors. But flip!!!! The end 😭 oh my word! My heart was beating so erratically, the blood pounding in my ears, I was taking in deep breaths to calm myself, at a loss with what to do with my emotions. What's crystal clear is, not only do I desperately need the next book but I'm hopelessly in need of a Sigrid meal!

Book 6 of the series sees Bunny and Sidnee having returned from the Police Academy and excited to put their skills to use in Portlock. It doesn’t take long when a body is discovered at the chrome mine that is run by the dwarves. When the Nomo team go to investigate, they find the dwarves less than receptive to being helpful, sure that the local Hag that they share the mine with being responsible for the death. The dwarves are not happy about the inspector for the mines being dead in their mines. However, things get much worse, when a second body, this time of a headless dwarven miner, turns up in the corridors of the mines.
The dwarves are again sure that the Hag is to blame, and they not only want her removed from the mine, they want her dead. But when Bunny meets the Hag, Matilda, she comes to realise that the dwarves could be well off the mark. Bunny is happy to agree that the Hag is a terrifying creature, but if you take the time to get to know her, talk to her, she is actually rather an interesting person. Bunny is also sure that she is not capable of staging the crime scenes that have been set up in the mines.
Bunny is trying to deal with multiple things at the moment. She has her dog, who is actually a werewolf, who was cursed into the body of a dog and although the curse has been lifted, he actually feels safer as a dog now. The curse was done by Bunny’s mother, and so Bunny feels responsible for what has happened to poor Reggie. On top of that, she is still trying to work out what to do with her lynx cat, that is not a lynx cat, but actually something far more magical.
Whilst Bunny likes a good mystery, she doesn’t want to deal with a multiple murder, especially when they are still on the loose and cutting heads off of people, leaving families behind. The dwarves are furious, and want action, but the Nomo’s office isn’t willing to act rashly and just jump on the Hag, especially when she doesn’t look guilty.
With the outstanding character work that we have come to expect from this series, we continue to see Bunny’s character grow, but in this book, we delve more into her sidekicks, with a deeper look into Reggie and his troubles, and the continued background of Shadow. Bunny and Connor’s relationship continues to be developed as well.
Even though this is the sixth book in the series, new creatures continue to be introduced, expanding the world building, this time with the ‘Hellacious Hag’. But it’s not just the Hag, with additional background on Bunny’s hybrid, vamps and some other characters also adding to the series.
Book 6 is a fast paced, action-packed mystery, from the opening pages through to the very last page, this book is full-on.
Hellacious Hag is one of the more intense Portlock books, as the major characters of the Nomo’s office find themselves challenged by the events unfolding around them.
If you haven’t read this series – this is the book that should make you pick up this series as it is the Urban Fantasy series to be reading – easily the best Urban Fantasy Series on the Market today!!

“The Vampire and the Case of the Hellacious Hag” is the sixth book in the new “Portlock Paranormal Detective” series co-authored by Heather G. Harris (“Glimmer of the Other” series) and Jilleen Dolbeare (“Splintered Magic” series) and was brought forth as a wonderful surprise for the MANY fans of the series. Set in Alaska, honestly one of the USA’s most unique settings, it brings lore and mythology, the supernatural, and whodunit mysteries to life with well-rounded characters, delightful humor, gorgeous descriptions, just enough romance, and twists you’ll never see coming! I cannot possibly recommend this book more!! 12/10, highly recommended!

Welcome to Portlock, Alaska. A small town on haunted ground that for all the “peds” (that’s us, the normies) know is a ghost town and completely abandoned. But look deeper, embrace your inner shifter, realize your nascent vampire, summon your waiting witch, and you might just be able to step through The Barrier into Portlock proper! A town where supernats and peds (those in the know, of course) live in harmony, doing their thing day-to-day, living by the moon and by the sun, logging, fishing, and enjoying the life only Alaska can offer.

If you walk around town, you’ll find it really IS a ghost town; well, it has the spirit, so to speak. You might just happen upon the Nomo’s office (he’s like a sheriff, but far more Viking) down the way from the hardware store. If you walk through the door, you might get to meet Sidnee (mer)maiding the desk or Gunnar, the mountain of a man who wears the Nomo’s badge with pride. If you wait a minute, and it’s after dark, you might even run into a recent British transplant to Portlock, a former London high society rich kid and all-around kickass vampire, Officer Bunny Barrington, “The Fanged Flopsy” herself (much to her chagrin).

Despite having only been a part of the supernat world for the last few months, Bunny’s hit the ground running and never looked back! Bunny and Sidnee are back from the police academy, now full detectives of the Nomo’s office and ready to protect, serve, and if necessary, sever. Barely back for a minute, and suddenly there’s a murder in a mine to solve! Mix in some superstitious dwarves (no, not the hi-ho kind, the "Baruk Khazâd" and "Khazâd ai-mênu" kind), a hellacious hag, and covert-ops shenanigans courtesy of an MIB splinter group, and you’ve got one hel(acious) of a tale!

Needless to say, Bunny’s got her paws full with all of this… Will things EVER calm down in Portlock?

I received a free copy of this e-book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

absolutely fantastic

Rating: 5⭐️

As what I believe is the penultimate book in the series, The Vampire and the Case of the Hellacious Hag is a fantastic story.

The plot takes the characters and readers into a different area of Portlock that hasn’t yet been explored, the Chrome Mines and the dwarves that spend their lives inside.

Of course it starts off with a murder case, an investigation by NOMO’s Sheriff Gunner and Officer Bunny, and an introduction to a great new character, Hag Matilda who lives deep inside the mines.

There’s so much to admire about this book and the beautifully crafted storylines. Bunny’s a person who has consistently shown that she’s able to grow and thrive in her new role and environment, finding a found family and strength in her life. Every one of these characters feature heavily here in the story, as the investigation evolves into unexpected moments and challenges.

Even the enigmatic characters like Shadow and Fluffy, the curses wolfshifter uncomfortable with his human presence, are here in complicated ways.

This ends on a heartbreaking cliffhanger which will lead directly into the final story, The Vampire and the Case of the Malevolent Mermaid, to be released later this summer.

What an amazing story and series. I’m sure when it comes out as a compendium or set I’ll read completely through it again.

Highly recommended and now waiting for the next one to be released.

ONE OF THE BEST SERIES OUT THERE…I JUST WANT MORE 🩷💜🩷

This series has became an all-time favorite of mine! Two authors that were unknown to me that decided to combine efforts and write this exciting, CAPTIVATING series that is truly a GEM in the paranormal world! I am now on book six and all I want is to have a permanent membership to this series and hope that there will be many more books to come. Each book of the series centers around the FMC Bunny (yeah, don’t let the name fool you!), and a new case to be solved. Bunny, is a new made vampire who is hiding from her past life and 100 years of servitude, which brings her to a small Alaskan town filled with other supernatural beings. There, she works in the police department as an investigator, together with her very wise dog “Fluffy” and her mischievous feline pet “Shadow”, as well as other very colorful secondary characters. This installment brings another woozy of a mystery and if that wasn't enough, things are getting iffy for the supernatural folk who are being targeted by a dangerous organization. It is a wild and fun ride seeing Bunny doing her job using her wit, intelligence, humor, determination and all around amazing personality, plus the help of her colleagues, friends and her wonderful mate. This is a light, fun read, filled with mystery, action, humor (that will make you laugh-out-loud), and a bit of romance. Even though the police case gets resolved by the end of each book, there is a progression to the story and to Bunny herself, who is also somewhat of a mystery (more than a regular vampire should be). Trust me when I tell you that this series is a ONE-OF-A-KIND and so worth reading!!! High praise to both authors for their imagination, talent and superb writing skills. As an avid reader of many genres, I don’t get easily impressed anymore, but this new series has me as giddy as a kid in a candy store!!! I really do hope there will be many, many more books to come! Highly Recommended 🧡💜💚 PS. This particular book ends on a cliffhanger.

Another amazing Bunny adventure! This time Bunny is called to the Chrome Mine for a murder. But of course, as with anything else in Portlock, it is not what it looks like on the surface. Believing it is the hag who lives in the mine (yes, a hag), the dwarves are convinced that she is behind it. Despite the fact that Matilda, the hag, is terrifying, Bunny doesn't believe she is responsible for that murder - or any of the following murders. After following where the clues lead her, Bunny discovers that her very own nemesis group may be behind all the chaos in the mines. But can they find them and put a stop to them before it's too late?
As always, I absolutely adore Bunny! She is helpful and caring, even when it will get her in trouble! (Can't wait to see what happens with that scenario!) She makes friends and collects supernaturals everywhere she goes. And Connor! Oh boy, I think he has moved right into book boyfriend territory! I always loved Connor, but when he came and shoveled without asking that really pushed him over the edge lol. I live in a place with snow and boy do I love it when I don't have to shovel.
We also get a lot more of Sidnee in this book again and I am excited about that! She is finally getting back to herself and over her funk after Chris. Her and Thomas are so perfect for each other! And I can't forget to mention Matilda. I can just hear the cackles in my head. Even though she's scary, she is hilarious. She has a child-like glee and sense of humor.
The story takes off right from the beginning and it never stops. There is always something going on and clues to be found! I absolutely enjoy trying to put them together with Bunny! Although, she definitely does a better job than me. The plot takes you on several twists and turns and even brings back an old enemy. And that ending! GAH, I swear someone was cutting onions and that was why I was tearing up! I could not believe it! Now I am ever so patiently awaiting the next book!

Review of Case of the Hellacious Hag by Heather G. Harris & Joleen Dolbeare

Case of the Hellacious Hag is a fantastic next chapter in Bunny's journey—one that further cements her role as not only an evolving investigator but also a vital thread in the fabric of Portlock’s magical and mundane community.

Heather G. Harris and Joleen Dolbeare have struck gold again with a story that blends humor, heart, and a splash of supernatural chaos. Bunny’s character continues to shine with her unique blend of empathy, determination, and sharp intuition. As she navigates this latest paranormal case, we witness not only her growth as an investigator but her deepening bonds with the diverse citizens (and creatures) of Portlock.

This installment stands out for how it weaves together Bunny’s relationships—with her loyal friends, her chaotic and loveable pets, and the citizens she’s sworn to protect. It’s not just about solving another bizarre magical mystery; it’s about healing, understanding, and uniting a town that’s anything but ordinary.

Bunny’s influence at the Nomos’ office is starting to ripple outward, bringing in fresh perspective and a grounded sense of justice that’s both refreshing and long overdue. Her presence is changing the status quo, and the community is stronger for it.

Whether you’re here for the supernatural sleuthing, the delightful cast of characters, or the emotional layers that give this series its heart, Case of the Hellacious Hag delivers on every front. It’s a must-read for fans who love a heroine with grit, grace, and a knack for bringing people—and magical beings—together.

But on a side note, the cliffhanger is going to keep me on pins and needles until the next book!!!

It's the latest in the Portlock Paranormal Detective series, featuring "Bunny"Barrington. Bunny was turned vampire against her will and, when she managed to escape 100 years of servitude to London's master vampire, she wound up in Portlock, Alaska, working as a police officer in this paranormal town filled with vampires, shifters, sirens, you name it. If it's magical, it's in Portlock, along with some humans along for the ride. On one hand, it's hard to believe that the Case of the Hellacious Hag already is the seventh book in the series. On the other hand, I already want the eighth.

Heather G. Harris and Jilleen Dolbeare have created yet another entertaining (there's definite humour) yet suspenseful entry to this series, this time introducing Bunny and readers to the Portlock dwarves, their mining activity, and the alleged hellacious hag believed to be behind disruptions at the mine and responsible for the deaths of miners. But is the case as clear cut as most of the dwarves believe? Matilda, the hag, may collect skulls, but is she a killer? Bunny, recently home from official Police Academy training, isn't ready to accept it, and the investigation ensues.

By the seventh book in a series, the characters feel like old friends. However, Harris and Dolbeare manage to bring in new twists to characterisations. If you think you know everything about these characters, think again. You may be in for a surprise.

Yes, I received an ARC of this book, but the opinions expressed are my own. If nothing else, read the book to learn the new stories Bunny tells to explain how she acquired the nickname "Bunny" -- they alone are worth the price of admission.

There is something utterly magical about this series. Asking a reader to pick a favourite book is beyond cruel but the Portlock Paranormal Detective Series is running a tied race with just one or two big names for favourite series for me.

The tremendous found family vibe always tops my list of the things I adore about these books. It feels stronger than normal in Hellacious Hag and makes for heartwarming reading. The authors have leaned into the support and love shown by the core group because of what's happening in this book and then added a few new characters to extend that to. The titular Hag is a real stand out for me, and in the Portlock world of rare magicals that's an accomplishment!

There are the laugh out loud moments that are always part of Ms Harris and Ms Dolbeare's writing. They randomly throw their funny one-liners in and I find myself snorting with laughter in the oddest places! These authors have been able to brilliantly blend their writing styles into one that feels real and reads as smooth as silk, filled with vivid imagery, snappy banter, dark mysteries and unique settings.

One paragraph that really spoke to me is " ‘Everyone deserves books. Books are knowledge and fun and escapism. It’s not okay for anyone to dictate what books someone reads and when.’ ". That is such an important message.

As always, I found myself tearing through this book, cheering for some, throwing figurative rotten tomatoes at others, and keen for more. This is a book for readers seeking a unique, high-quality urban fantasy escape into 400 pages of absolute absorption.

Welcome back to Portlock, Alaska where Bunny and Sidnee have returned from the academy and are now full fledged detectives. They barely have a moment to catch their breath when they’re called to a murder scene at the mines. The dwarves who run the mine are not fond of outsiders on their turf and they’re convinced that the Hag, that lives in the mine, is responsible for the death. Bunny is not convinced especially after meeting Matilda, the Hag. Bunny and the rest of the NOMO gang start investigating but things just get more convoluted. Can Bunny solve this crime before everything spirals out of control?
This series has so much going for it and it’s an impressive collaborative read. Bunny is a strong and relatable character, despite her vampirism, and she’s so likable too. I love that Bunny and her coworkers are like a little family, along with Shadow and Fluffy, and although the relationships are sometimes complex they’re also such a huge part of this heartfelt series. Matilda is quite the character, with her outwardly terrifying demeanor, she basically just wants to be left alone as long as she gets her daily delivery of delicious donuts. This is a fast paced urban fantasy with lots of twists and turns, humor, a touch of romance, mystery and some fantastic action. The book ends with a cliffhanger that will definitely have you anxiously awaiting the next book.

Bunny is back from the academy and things just keep getting more interesting.
A murder in a local mine starts of the mystery. According to the dwarves that work in the mine, a local hag is the culprit, something that can’t be determined. When a second murder occurs, this time a dwarf, Bunny is hampered by the dwarves traditions, she and her police partners cannot touch anything to do with the dead dwarf – no access to the body, blood, or possible clues.
After making contact with the hag, who agrees to talk for donuts, a bit more information comes to light but not enough to stop a third murder.
Assisted by Connor, Sindee, Gunner and of course Fluffy and Shadow, Bunny has her work cut out for her. All of the characters are completely real to me, with all their quirks and actions. Even the other members of the town work out well. I’d love to visit Portlock.
There are suspicions, surprises, suspense, action and of course humour. Bunny definitely shouldn’t go to parties and drink!
This was a fabulous addition to the series; it has a good mystery and the solutions are not really what you expect.
Unfortunately, this ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, and of course it’s going to be too long until the next book comes out.
This is a series that I will quickly read any new books that come out and I will definitely reread.

I’m always champing at the bit to get the next book in this series, and then just need everyone to leave me alone so I can devour it. In a consistently fantastic series, this book just ups the ante even more.

Bunny and Sidnee are back from their academy training with increased knowledge and skills…as well as a mistrust of all (most) things MIB related!

With murders happening and the mysterious Hag being blamed, Bunny and co have to ignore prejudice and red herrings to investigate what is really going on. Things are rarely as they seem in Portlock and the team are all in danger as they work find the perpetrators, before any more lives are lost.

Bunny has grown and developed more with each book. She has strong moral ethics, determination and loves her job, as well as a huge (undead) heart. The group have strong ties as found family and friends, which have developed more with each book and I just love the way they have all been drawn together and care so much for one another.

The story is action packed with lots of peril and keeps you guessing to the end. There is still all the humour that you expect with Bunny, which lightens those darker moments. It’s a real page turner that doesn’t let go and that ending! Oh my goodness, I NEED to know what happens next!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily please note there may be spoilers!

Heather and Jilleen have helped to brighten the cold dark days (in the UK as well as Portlock) by treating their fans to the next Portlock novel.

New Officer Barrington, hasn’t been back in town too long before she’s dealing with ordinary domestic issues in a very Bunny like way, (or that could be the author’s and readers point of view trust me you’ll know which bit I mean 😁) while trying to get Fluffy to spend more time in his human form.

Unfortunately it’s not long before there is trouble of the dead body kind, and a big dispute between dwarven miners and the Hellacious Hag in the title, who has a penchant for sweet treats in exchange for information.

It’s not long before tension between the dwarven miners and the Hag is escalating when more crimes are reported to the NOMO’S office and Bunny may want to invest in the bakery store if she can’t solve the case soon. However it’s not long before the past comes back to haunt the team.
Join Bunny and friends as they deal with their next chapter in their lives while living in the supernatural haven of Portlock, Alaska.

At this point, the only way to describe the brilliance of these two authors is simply to say—they’ve done it again (and again, and again). This latest installment delivers an incredible storyline, well-developed characters, and refreshingly mature, healthy relationships. Every character feels fully fleshed out, making the world they’ve created even more immersive.

While I enjoyed the Christmas novella, nothing quite compares to the quirky, lovable characters of Portlock. A special shoutout to the newest addition, Matilda—it truly felt like coming home. Bunny’s dynamic with every character is a joy to read, but her relationship with Gunnar as a father figure remains my absolute favorite. And, of course, a special mention to Bunny’s moments with Fluffy/Reggie (and Shadow), which were just as heartwarming.

Connor, as always, is a given—we all love him! This entire series is a must-read for anyone looking to lose themselves in a beautifully crafted world. Each book keeps getting better, though be warned—this one ends with a little cliffhanger. I can’t wait to dive back into Bunny & Co.’s journey!

A fabulous addition to the series. Bunny & Sidnee are back from the academy and are straight into the thick of things with murder at the mine.
The grumpy dwarves at the mine are convinced it is the work of the ‘hellacious hag’ that hangs out it the mine terrorising them and collecting the skulls of the dead. Armed with donuts and the manners her Mum drummed into her Bunny manages to question Matilda - the very scary, slighty crazy earth elemental 'hag' which casts doubt on whether she is the culprit.
Matilda was an absolute highlight. I freaking LOVED her. And her surprise revelation about the skulls.

This series is always fun and action packed but it also shines for the ongoing character development. I mean Bunny’s is obvious but we also have Sidnee who's progression from office assistant to fully fledge officer in a relationship with Thomas has been a delight to witness.

I also love Connor & Bunny's relationship and how they work as a team and support each other.

I received an ARC but all views expressed are my own.

Who Could it Be?

Jileen Dolbeare and Heather Harris have brought us the newest Portlock thriller with a bang! Places are blowing up all over and the newly trained officers of the Nomo’s office are sprinting to keep up.

Bunny and Sidnee are called to investigate a murder at the Chrome mine. The dwarves who run it aren't being very helpful. They blame Matilda the Hag for the missing head of the dead dwarf.

In a brilliant move, Bunny goes to meet the Hag and makes friends with her. Matilda doesn't seem to be what the dwarves are convicting her of, and Bunny goes looking for other troublemakers.

The Vampire and the Case of the Hellacious Hag is a fast-paced, action-packed magical thrill of a ride. Looking for the bad guys is like playing Wack a Mole, as soon as they identify one, up pops another.

Harris and Dolbeare pen a witty, content-rich novel that seems to last for hours until it suddenly ends. With a major cliffhanger ending. Leaving you craving the next batch of news from Portlock.

Fabulous book. I wouldn't miss it if I were you.

Thoroughly good series

I love this series, and one of the things I love most is that there are a lots of species (or races? Can a Vampire be the same race as a Mermaid? I’d be interested in knowing) living, working, and, for the most part, getting along with one another. There’s always one or more persons who’re disgruntled with the status quo in any community.

In this book, you have a sneaky group trying to blame murders on someone else. The dwarves think the Hag is to blame, but Bunny doesn’t think so. In the process of finding out the truth, Bunny makes a new and rather scary friend who has the ability to aid the investigation.

For me, the only thing I dislike is that it ends on a cliffhanger. However, I stand by my 5-star rating, and I will be buying the next one. After this many books in the series, I’m invested in the characters,

I recommend this series for lovers of paranormal, shifter, mystery, and romance. My advice is to start at the beginning of the series, since each book builds on the previous, even when they’re not cliffhangers.
