The Nature of Love is a wonderful wrap up to the Love in the Spotlight series. It’s a book that you could pick up and read even if you haven’t read the first two books in the series. However, if you have read the entire series, you will especially love the interactions between the three couples from all of the books and the fun series epilogue at the end of this one.

This novel has many wonderfully swoony moments between Chris and Erykah, but it also deals with the heavy topic of grief due to the death of close family members. The deaths occur off page, but the grief is very real for Erykah and her oldest niece and is definitely a focal point of the story, so be advised if that is something that you are sensitive to. I think that the author handled it all very authentically, giving weight to how much it affected everything in Erykah’s life from that moment on.

The faith journey in this novel was remarkable and an integral part of the storyline. It felt authentic to this couple’s interactions together. The questions Erykah raised as she tried to determine what she believed and the ways her eyes were opened to things she hadn’t seen before were beautiful additions to the overall movement of the plot.

Chris and Erykah were so good together and a great representation of people who were slightly older than many of the couples that you typically find in romance novels. Their experiences and the positions they held in their occupations felt realistic to their ages, as well.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Toni does it again!

This is the third book in the Love and Spotlight series, I highly recommend reading the first two books to put everything into perspective.

Chris finally finds his one true love! We follow Chris and Erykah as they find love in the mist of so many obstacles.

One of the things I loved in this book was that both of the characters were in their forties. It’s never too late for the love that God has for anyone.

I will not do spoilers.

Both Chris and Erykah experienced traumatic experiences and had to navigate feelings that they didn’t know they had. This wasn’t instant love, but instant attraction. During these trials they somehow fell in love as they navigated a new normal.

This was a story of slow passion, trust in Christ and learning to find beauty in any situation.

While I’m sad to see this series end, it was finished beautifully and didn’t leave any questions.

Thank you Toni and Bethany House for the opportunity to read this great book.

4.5 stars. Ohh this book🥹🥰🩷

Dr. Erykah Kennedy and Christian Gamble find themselves in the classic meet cute. You know the one: ✨Two 40-year-old singles (one an orthopedic surgeon and one a wildlife conservationist) living in small town Colorado meeting over mutual delicious burger obsession✨Soon after, Erykah’s life is shattered overnight and Christian finds himself being the rock and an emotional support for his new friend ooooor maybe more than friend.

Y’all THE GOSPEL IN THIS STORY👏🏼👏🏼 There are some very tough topics explored in this book specifically around grief. But Toni Shiloh wove the WHOLE GOSPEL through this story and it was beautiful and encouraging. Erykah’s journey was just yes and amen.

The whole cast of characters brought so much to the story and reading Christian and Erykah’s love story blossom is something I’ll never forget. All the feels and sorrow and joy and hope and love.

Thank you @bethanyhousefiction for the gifted copy!! I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. This book is out now!

I have been highly enjoying each book in the Love in the Spotlight series and personally feel they have just been getting better and better! I have been coming to better know most of the characters over the course of the series so I’m sure being invested in their lives and what comes next has helped keep me interested, which I think speaks to Toni Shiloh’s ability to hook you. But The Nature of Love has definitely been my favorite so far.

After hearing poor “old man” Chris getting picked on by Tuck and Lamont for two books now (in their friendly banter way of course), I was glad it was finally his turn to be in the spotlight (ah, see what I did there!). With Chris being a conservationist/YouTube personality and Erykah being an orthopedic surgeon, these are two jobs you don’t often see main characters having in romance novels so it definitely helped continue to make this series unique.

Admittedly, I was so not ready for some heartache as this book was really starting to get going! I know that is super vague, but I don’t want to give away too much and spoil something, but wow! My jaw definitely dropped open when I read it and I went “no!” Then later, Chris and Erykah get hit with some more hardship that they have to work through. Their friendship and any budding relationship gets put to the test for sure. I do love how Erykah takes a stand for herself at one point after struggling with social anxiety (hello representation!) for most of the book. I was like “yeah girl, you tell him!” I do love a good girl power moment and Chris certainly needed a little metaphorical kick in the behind!

The epilogue was so sweet! Getting a glimpse several years into the future for all three couples is always so nice after you’ve become invested in a series like this. While you don’t have to read this series in any order technically, I would definitely encourage reading the other books before this one so you can more fully appreciate the epilogue!

One of my favorite things about the Love in the Spotlight series has been the friendship between Lamont, Tuck, and Chris – from their hilarious banter (and usually-debatable romance advice) to the authenticity with which these perhaps-unlikely friends hold each other accountable in their walks with God. Most often this shows up in the form of their ongoing text conversations which make me smile on the regular… but every once in a while we get to see them all together in one place. And The Nature of Love delivers those ‘in person’ moments in spades, only one of the many reasons that it’s probably my favorite book of the series. (I say ‘probably’ only because I LOVE ALL THREE BOOKS so much, for different reasons, and being forced to officially choose between them would send me into a mental tizzy.)

But, for the sake of this review, let’s examine the other reasons I would give for why it IS my fave of the series, just in case I am forced to decide. (If your first reaction to the previous sentence is ‘that’s a cop-out, Carrie’, you’re totally right. I’m a big chicken who can’t bring myself to tell Lamont or Tuck that ‘poor old’ Chris’s book beats theirs in a vote. LOL)

1. THE FEELS. Oh my heart, y’all. I read an early version of this book last year and I’ve still not recovered from all the emotions it took me through. I laughed. I swooned. I grinned big. But I cried, too, and there were a couple of scenes where I thought my heart would break right in two. Because The Nature of Love is lots of fun, and it’s witty and it’s swoony… and it also explores life-altering news and ongoing grief, the kind that could undo even the strongest among us. And Shiloh does each of these aspects – and the combination of all of them together – so beautifully. The humor is perfectly timed, even in the grieving, and she achieves the perfect balance of making us chuckle without making light of the characters’ loss. Which brings me to…

2. Erykah‘s faith journey. Watching her come to a relationship with Jesus is just exquisite. I always love the way Shiloh incorporates faith into her stories, in such natural and engaging ways, and this is one of her best faith journeys yet. The questions Erykah asks as she tries to understand what she’s reading in her Bible, what she’s experiencing in her pain, what she sees in Chris’s life, they are spot on and made me love Erykah’s character even more than I already did. Which brings me to…

3. Chris. (He’s actually worth about 10 reasons all on his own.) He is a hero of heroes in his own quiet, steady way in this story, and the way he jumps into the middle of Erykah’s crisis and acts as the tangible hands and feet of Jesus for her is so touching. Plus, he’s pretty hot for a guy in his forties (#understatement), and I adored watching him help Erykah with her nieces and her dog Charlie. Which brings me to…

4. The secondary characters. Especially Charlie the cutie-cute dog who stole my heart and Cheyenne the sassy five-year-old who stole the show. So fun!!

Bottom Line: The Nature of Love by Toni Shiloh is every bit as delightful a romance as its marvelous cover would suggest, but it’s also so much more! Chris and Erykah won my affection from their meet-cute to their meet-twice and on through their growing friendship, forced proximity, and eventual romance. I loved their honesty with each other and the ways they mutually supported and respected each other, too. Grief and loss share the page with wit and flirting and a little bit of sass (for good measure), all of it skillfully balanced and threaded with meaningful faith themes through layered characters. I’m so sad to say goodbye to this series, but Shiloh gifts us with the perfect epilogue to make the parting sweeter. Do yourself a favor and carve out some uninterrupted time to read this gem of a story – your uplifted heart will thank you for it!

This book was a refreshing read after a slump, with a great mix of romance and humor while also addressing grief and loss. Dr. Erykah Kennedy and Chris Gamble were both endearing characters with their own struggles, and I really enjoyed seeing their growth and how they overcame challenges.

I also appreciated the representation—Black characters in Christian fiction aren’t something I see often from traditional publishers, and it was great to read a story where faith was clearly woven in through prayer, Bible reading, and church. While the way they finally got together felt a bit cringey for me, the story as a whole was engaging and enjoyable.

What a great ending to the third book in the Love in the Spotlight series! This story was honestly more emotional than any other Toni Shiloh book I have read. It broke my heart but I was also cheering on the characters as they faced their trials. Knowing that God was helping them along the way.

I really loved that this story also had a salvation story as well, I would love to see more of that in stories when characters find their faith. And loved the older protagonist love storyline.

I loved the characters and the story. Also that the love interests were an older generation as well.

The Nature of Love is the third book in the Love in the Spotlight series. I recommend reading the first two books in this series as the characters and plots are woven together. This story focuses on Chris and Erykah who are in their 40's. While this story has its funny moments, it also has heartbreaking moments and characters dealing with grief. I appreciated Chris's faith and was happy to watch Erykah make a decision to turn her life over to Christ. Shiloh captured Cheyenne's sassy 5 year old personality effortlessly along with weaving spiritual truths into The Nature of Love.

what a sweet story! I really loved the representation in this book and i loved that it wasn’t a regular romance but showed both characters having unique careers and encountering unique situations. I especially loved how the author wove the scriptures in and throughout the story, i thought it was so nicely done especially considering how tough the situations were for the characters 😩 but they came through by faith and i really enjoyed it!

Toni Shiloh has firmly secured her place as my favorite Christian romance author, and The Nature of Love is a perfect example of why. Though I haven't read the first book in the series, this installment absolutely blew me away—it’s by far my favorite of hers so far. The story was sooo good!

One of the things I love most about Shiloh's writing is how she weaves faith into her stories. When I pick up a Christian novel, I want Jesus to be included—not just as an afterthought but as an essential part of the story. That’s exactly what this book delivers. Shiloh doesn’t shy away from exploring faith in a deep and meaningful way, and it made the story all the more powerful.

The character development in this book was phenomenal. I especially adored Erica’s niece, Shay—her sassiness was off the chain! Every time she appeared on the page, I found myself chuckling. She brought so much personality and humor to the story, making it even more enjoyable.

Beyond the romance, one of the most moving aspects of this book was its message about community. The Nature of Love beautifully illustrates the importance of having a village of people who love you, support you, and point you back to Christ—especially in the midst of tragedy. Life’s hardships are so much more bearable when you have people who not only care for you but also remind you of God's love.

I also have to mention the audiobook narrator—she did an amazing job! Her performance was much stronger in this book compared to A Run at Love, really bringing the characters to life in a way that enhanced the story.

Overall, this book is everything I want in a Christian romance—deep faith, strong characters, emotional depth, and a touch of humor. I can’t recommend it enough!

"The Nature of Love" has everything readers have come to expect from Toni Shiloh's Love in the Spotlight series. Sweet romance, healthy friendships, buddy banter, unabashed faith themes, and relatable characters with authentically portrayed struggles.

For her grand finale, The Queen of Romance Tropes has outdone herself with the addition of fun animals, adorable kids, and a slow burn romance, simmering with yearning.

Chris is just *le sigh* the BEST! Probably one of my top favorite heroes in a contemporary romance, and he and Erykah were just so cute together!

If you're a fan of inspirational romance, The Nature of Love is sure to be your cup of tea!

This is an excellent story about grief and love.

I am a huge fan of Toni Shiloh’s books and this one did not disappoint. What seemed like it would be a regular man meets woman love story turned into so much more. Watching the love of God unfold through the actions of the characters while watching them deal with grief in a real way was astounding.

The ending was beautiful. I highly recommend this book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Nature of Love by Toni Shiloh is a Christian Romance that dives into the lives of Dr. Erykah Kennedy and Christian Gamble and how a run in at a restaurant for a burger can change both of their lives in ways that they can’t fathom.
I was really excited to know that Chris was getting his own book we get glimpses of him through his friends stories through the text messages and joking banter back and forth throughout Tuck’s and Lamont’s books.
With Dr. Kennedy being an orthopedic surgeon and Chris being a wildlife conversationalist I was curious how well these two would mesh but Toni did a beautiful job bringing these two together despite all the differences that they shared. I can always appreciate how the story ultimately comes together for both characters.
I wasn’t prepared for the trauma and the grief that ensued but it was done so tastefully and this was what would ultimately bring Erykah and Chris closer together. While I loved Chris because of his loving and supportive nature the character who stole the book for me was 5 year old Cheyenne. Cheyenne was the cutest little person with such a sassy attitude and inquisitive nature and I loved her.
The story was medium pace even though you don’t get a glimpse of the true nature of the romantic relationship until the end. I would rather it have happened in the middle and for their relationship to evolve from there.
The best part of the story for me was Erykah’s faith transition it was beautiful and it was everything.
Overall I enjoyed this read and I enjoyed the series as a whole and I can’t wait for what’s next.

Dr. Erykah Kennedy, a successful orthopedic surgeon, has given up on love—until she meets Christian Gamble, a dedicated wildlife conservationist whose adventurous spirit captivates her heart. When tragedy makes Erykah guardian to her nieces, Chris steps in, and together they navigate faith, healing, and an unexpected romance destined by nature.

I read this book as a standalone (haven't read the others in the series yet), but now I might just have to circle back and discover how the other characters fell in love! This author beautifully handles difficult topics, making them tangible and heartwarming without diminishing their depth or importance. But what I loved most about this story was the representation: 40-year-old characters, a woman in STEM unapologetically prioritizing her career goals, realistic uncertainty about caring for children, Black love, and romance that portrays practical physical boundaries.

If your vibe includes diva kids, rugged animal-wrangling men who are equally gentle-hearted, a dog who's basically a main character, ski trips, thoughtful listening for God's direction, relationships built on true partnership, and a delightfully fun found family—here is your favorite book of the year!

Thank you @bethanyhousefiction for the gifted book 🥰

Why I read: I’ve enjoyed the author’s Christmas novellas and thought this cover was cute ☺️ We need more books with as much variety of representation as this one!

Thank You to Toni Shiloh for creating this masterpiece!
This book was beautifully written and captured so many emotions - grief, loneliness, frustration, anxiety, fear, love. I saw myself in so many of these characters and that made the read relatable and more enjoyable. I love how the author wove spiritual teachings without seeming overbearing. I rooted for Erykah from page one until the end…well actually I’m STILL rooting for her! Shiloh creates amazing male leads theatre swoon worthy and admirabl.

Every time I pick up a book by Toni Shiloh I know I'm in for a treat. I have simply adored the Love in the Spotlight series. Some of my favorite parts are the text threads between our three male buddies. A mix of comedy and spiritual hard truths that just really had this reader smiling. And I have been waiting for "gramps" story - aka Chris, the elder friend. Not only was it nice to see a romance between people around my own age, it was nice to see the camaraderie between him and his buddies, despite the age difference.

Now let's talk romance. Shiloh Is. A. Master. Not only does she have all the swoony moments you want in her romances, she's got sizzling chemistry, realistic life issues and how they can interfere with romance, conflict, and such beautiful faith themes. Erykah had something MAJOR happen to her, and man it had be crying. But after that, as she's trying to pick up the pieces with the ruggedly handsome Chris beside her, Shiloh shows real emotion and internal struggle. Even in the midst of heartache we have emotions and natural attractions that can't be helped. And how Shiloh shows that between Erykah and Chris is simply magic.

The Nature of Love is a beautiful addition to an already amazing series. In fact, I think it's my favorite. Shiloh reminds readers that even in darkness there is a light - a light that will lead, guide, and help. There's a reason Shiloh's one of my favorites. And all the pages of this book prove why. Highly recommend!

Author Toni Shiloh brings us the last of her Love in the Spotlight series with The Nature of Love.
Dr. Erykah Kennedy lives a fairly solitary existence despite being an attending orthopedic surgeon. Her only true is her states-away sister.
Christian Gamble is a wildlife conservationist, a truly great guy who has a “once bitten, twice shy” attitude towards dating. But when a meet-cute with Dr. Kennedy happens - twice - could he rethink his outlook?
He’s there when she learns of a tragedy, and will do anything to help her navigate it. Could the current chaos of their lives lead to faith in the Lord and a lifetime together?
I was engrossed from start to finish! The author is so adept at portraying navigating through grief and trials in a real and thoughtful manner, but also how the Lord can make beauty from ashes. Plus, it has my favorite, an epilogue, and this one is extra-fantastic!
I received a complimentary copy of this book, but my opinion is entirely my own.

I love Chris's treatment of Erykah as their friendship blossomed. He was her rock and comforter, supporting her when tragedy struck. The way he loved her as a friend revealed his true character and made her contemplate a relationship with him.

The Nature of Love wasn't a light read, but it was a good one. I especially enjoyed Erykah's faith journey and how she blossomed as she fell in love with Chris.

It was fun catching up with Tuck and Piper and Lamont and Neveah from the earlier books.

The Nature of Love, by Toni Shiloh, is a contemporary romance that is both moving and thoughtful. Filled with engaging characters and meaningful themes, this book is truly compelling and ultimately uplifting. Though it is the third book in the Love in the Spotlight series, it reads very well as a stand-alone novel.

With each new book, Ms.Shiloh continues to demonstrate her terrific skills as a writer. In The Nature of Love, she has shown once again that she knows how to entertain and engage her readers. In this novel, her writing is detailed and thought-provoking.
But it is the main characters in this book who are really quite special. They have a few decades of life experience from which they can draw wisdom as they navigate through the treacherous journey of loss and heartbreak. Though they experience true frustrations and uncertainties, they have a sense of maturity that enables them to take necessary risks, share their vulnerabilities, and face their insecurities. With honesty, perseverance, and a bit of courage, they endeavor to recover from deep wounds as they pursue healing and wholeness. They learn the value of honesty, trust, and faith, as they discern what their hearts truly desire.

From the first page to the last, this book offers a tender and heartfelt story. With themes addressing the value of friends, family, priorities, grief, faith, and healing, The Nature of Love is an important novel. Filled with hope, compassion, resiliency, trust, and second chances it is genuinely heartwarming. It is an immersive, well-written, and worthy story. I sincerely recommend it.

Nobody writes like Toni! What a wonderful wrap-up to this series. I think this might be my favorite of the bunch—not just for the animals and the epic song references, but for the faith woven throughout the story that had me crying the whole way through. We all know Toni is the Queen of Faith, but this one? It was just so good.

It took me a while to get to it and get through it (because life has been life-ing), but once I picked it up, I was completely immersed. I didn’t want to put it down! The story pulled me in and made me feel everything.

Erykah was such an inspirational character, and I wish I could know her in real life. She was beautifully written, and her journey to Jesus was one of the highlights of the book. I also loved seeing familiar faces from the previous books and getting to witness their happily-ever-afters—it was the perfect send-off for this beloved group of friends.

I’m truly going to miss this series, but what a satisfying way to end it. If you haven’t read this yet, don’t wait!

Thank you so much Toni and Bethany House for the opportunity to read and review this wonderful book! 🫶🏼

This book was surprising but also delightful. The book explores Dr Erykah Kennedy and Chris Gamble’s friends to lovers relationship. The author does close proximity while keeping faith as the focal point really well. This is probably one of the authors heavier themed books, exploring death and grieving which surprised me. It was an enjoyable conclusion to the Love in the Spotlight series and I loved seeing all the characters come together at different points. Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for an advanced copy. All thoughts are my own!

This story of friends-to-more hit some deep depths through the exploration of grief and God alongside many trials in life. Erykah and Chris/Christian hold such a genuine friendship that grows into more in God’s timing and I just loved that. This was a very sweet, deep, faith-based read!

The Nature of Love by Toni Shiloh was like going on a hike in nature—it had all the ups and downs you could ever want, along with twists and turns you didn't see coming. And like all good hikes, it left you with a sense of contentment and unexplainable delight by the end.

Toni Shiloh gave us two uniquely wonderful people, not unlike most of us, who are searching for meaning, love, and happiness where we are planted. However, much to Dr. Erykah's dismay, love has not been easy or her focus in life. She was a layered character who was deeply searching for light and who wasn't afraid to ask the hard questions. I appreciated her sense of self and her dedication in troubled times—something I wish we saw more of in stories.

Now, Chris was a very patient man. He was unexpected and ended up wonderfully balancing Dr. Erykah, even though I wasn't sure how Toni Shiloh was going to mesh them together at the start. Another element of Chris's character I liked was his deep faith and the caring ways he chose to show it. Toni Shiloh did a great job displaying this without being preachy.

As this is book three in a series, there were previous characters cameos from other books in the series, which I found fun; it was like getting caught up with old friends. Though I am sad to see this series come to a close, I am looking forward to what else Toni Shiloh has in store.

Dr. Erykah Kennedy is all about her work. But that also serves to covers up the discomfort she feels relating to people. It seems like the only people that truly get her are her sister and brother-in-law.

That is, until she meets wildlife conservationist Chris Gamble.

It’s hard for her to deny the attraction, but she’s determined to keep him in the friend zone. However, when tragedy strikes and she find herself drowning from all the change that’s hit her life, Chris has her rethinking whether he should be more than a friend.

This book was such a cute end to Toni Shiloh’s Love in the Spotlight series! I really enjoyed this over 40 love story—and all the references to pop culture from my youth. It’s always refreshing seeing slightly older MCs in romance books.

As with every Toni Shiloh book I’ve read, faith played an integral role and was done well. I loved seeing Erykah’s faith journey grow. This one was a bit insta-lovey which isn’t my favorite trope, but it wasn’t cringey. I think with the older characters, it felt more believable.

If you haven’t read the Love in the Spotlight series, I’d recommend you check it out—it’s truly Christian romance at its finest! So grateful to the publisher for sending me a copy to review. All opinions are my own!

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️½🩺👩🏿‍⚕️🌲🎿✝️

My thoughts: 📱18% 2:21:09 Chapter 9 - The FMC is from Kentucky like the characters in Book 2, has a sister there and made an appearance in that book but the main connection is through the guys and the long-distance group chat from Book 1 and Book 2. Anyway as far as the connection goes the FMC plays too much for me.
📱29% 3:45:52 Chapter 14 - This story has upset me a bit I didn't see any of this coming and I already wasn't loving it. It's not a bad story I'm just not jumping up and down over this so-called love story so I'm gonna move on for now.
📱49% 6:30:22 Chapter 23 - This is
better, but the romance is lacking. I'm halfway so there’s plenty of time for them to get it in gear.

I liked it better than Book 2 but it was still up and down for me. Book 1 was the best for me and the others did recapture that vibe. This story does explore a lot of deeper emotions and Christian growth, but the romance was all talk, They said they were in love but I didn't believe them because they didn't do anything to show it other than proclaim it and words even the trope was proclaimed in words and no examples given.

Recommend to others: Sure, if you read the other books this gives an ending for everyone, so you'll want to read it for closure if nothing else.

I enjoyed reading The Nature of Love, the third book in Toni Shiloh’s Love in the Spotlight series set in Colorado. Erykah is an accomplished orthopedic surgeon who is married to her career. She raised her younger sister because their parents were incapable and bailed on them. Erykah is an independent woman who has spent years prioritising her work at the expense of her personal life. Her best friend is her younger sister who married and moved to Kentucky. Erykah loves her five-year-old niece, Cheyenne, and her baby niece, Ashlyn.

Chris is a YouTube star and wildlife conservationist who lives in an eco friendly log cabin home. He feels like the fifth wheel in his friend group, but he can’t forget the excruciating emotional pain from being jilted at the altar. He’s happy his two close friends, Lamont and Tuck, have found their future wives and are busy making wedding preparations. Chris has a generous heart, but he’s wary of relationships.

Chris and Erykah’s meet cute is adorable, and they become friends who ignore the underlying attraction that could lead to something more. Erykah’s life is turned upside down when she suddenly becomes the caretaker of her young nieces. Grief is a theme that’s explored in the story. I empathised with the characters and shed a few tears while reading about their difficult circumstances.

Chris is Erykah’s friend and her rock who lives his faith and plays a role in Erykah’s journey to faith. I loved how Erykah’s salvation story sets the stage for Erykah and Chris to become more than friends. It was fun reuniting with Lamont and Nevaeh plus Tuck and Piper from earlier books in the series. The strong friendship between the men, and the group messaging where they support and pray for each other, is an important part of the story.

I recommend The Nature of Love to contemporary romance readers who like friends-to-more romances that deal with hard issues, including grief and the daily challenges of caring for young children, and have a strong faith element in the story.

Many thanks to Bethany House and NetGalley for the advanced reader copy.
