The Men From Echo Creek

Rate this book
In the winter of 1882, a boy from the mountains has to prove himself a man.

When Albie Bramwell’s father died, he was left with two thousand hectares of mountain to farm, and little help to run it. Abandoned by all but two of his workers, the whole town of Alpine Falls called him too young to run the farm alone.

Young, yes. At just nineteen, he was determined to prove them wrong. Even if it killed him.

In search of a new life, Percy Collins found himself in a small mountain town where he ran into a man not much older than himself and scored a job at Echo Creek. A property full of misfits, or so the townsfolk had called it. But what Percy found was a home.

What Albie found was something he never thought possible. A man to love, and a man to share his dreams.

But times were tough, the winter harsh, and money scarce. Albie and Percy would need to do more than prove themselves worthy. They’d need to not only prove themselves better than anyone else. They’d need to prove it twice.

N.R. Walker is an Australian author, who loves her genre of gay romance. She loves writing and spends far too much time doing it, but wouldn't have it any other way.

She is many things; a mother, a wife, a sister, a writer. She has pretty, pretty boys who she gives them life with words.

She likes it when they do dirty, dirty things...but likes it even more when they fall in love. She used to think having people in her head talking to her was weird, until one day she happened across other writers who told her it was normal.

She’s been writing ever since...

This is Nic Walker at her best: evocative storytelling, complex MCs, real-life angst, horses, awesome secondary characters, and the best epilogue (when I say I like to see the MCs happy and settled, this is what I mean).

I typically don't read YA, but in 1882 Australia, the rules go out the widow. Albie is 19 and Percy a year younger, but they are MEN, not boys. They work hard, and love harder.

Their sexual exploration, timid at first, felt so real. Percy heard enough sermons to feel ashamed of his desires, but Albie wasn't having any of that. He just wanted to make Percy feel good.

Percy had never felt anything like it ... He had no clue it could be like this. "Oh my god," he breathed.

"How can I want more?" Albie said, trembling with restraint.

The townies call the Echo Creek ranch crew a band of misfits. In addition to Albie, who just lost his father, and Percy, who left his privileged family to live life on his own terms, there's Robert, once the town drunk; Des, a brilliant horsemen with a bum knee; and Elsie and Clara, a couple who escapes to Echo Creek after Clara is assaulted at the saloon where both women work.

The secondary characters added so much to the story. I especially loved Elsie; she was fucking fierce, cheeky, and always had Albie's back.

While figuring out how to keep the ranch operations in the black, Albie and Percy have to deal with the likes of McAllister, a wealthy bully who wants to buy Albie's land for pennies, and his cronies.

I only wish this book were longer! I could have read an additional hundred pages and begged for more.

If you like historical fiction, with a dash of adventure and plenty of romance, you'll love The Men From Echo Creek.

*3.5* The year is 1882, Albie (19) has just lost his father, and is now in charge of the farm. Most of the farm hands leave as they don’t believe he is capable of following in his father‘s footsteps.
He had no clue what he would do, or where to even start, but he was in charge now. He was the boss.
Percy (18) is new in town, and desperately looking for work.
“I’m eighteen, a grown man, and I’m a hard worker. I have my own horse, and I’d be no trouble.”
Walker writes innocent love so well. Percy and Albie’s genuine teenage joy of experiencing romantic feelings was so sweet to read, and it was made even better that it was the first time for both of them.
“I never thought I’d ever meet someone like me.”
There’s no bi-awakening, no questioning their attractions, no push/pull, just two young gay men, doing their best to survive in a world where they have to hide their love.
I’ll never understand how people can clutch a Bible in one hand while they beat you with their other.
There were so many opportunities to add some weight to the story but Walker kept it very sweet and stress-free. This could be a good or bad thing, depending on what you like in your stories.

For me, it felt a bit Disney-like, which in retrospect, makes sense because of The Man from Snowy River theme. It’s hard not to compare this story to my favorite series, Red Dirt Heart. While this story is good, it does not come anywhere close to the depth of emotion Red Dirt carried throughout.

This is a character-driven story, with a wonderful cast of supporting characters. Very light, low drama, and a wonderful 10 years later epilogue. HEA.

*I’m leaning more 3 star than 4, but rounding up just because.

RATING 4.5 STARS

The Men From Echo Creek is a stand alone, historical, MM romance by N.R. Walker. I need to begin by saying I am not a historical romance reader. It’s just not normally something I enjoy. But Ms. Walker is one of my favorite authors so I decided to take a chance and take the plunge. I think since I don’t normally choose this genre, it took me a little longer to get into. But by the half way point, I was completely invested in these two men and their journey together.

The year is 1882. Albie Bramwell has lived his entire life on his father’s farm, Echo Creek. It’s the only life he has ever known and a life he loves. He lost his mother when he was young so it’s always been just he and his father. But, at the age of nineteen, Albie unexpectedly lost the father he loves. And along with that, some of their farm hands. All he has is the two that stayed, so now it’s just the three of them trying to stay afloat. Albie soon realizes how little he really knows about running things. Everyone believes he’ll fail, that he is much too young. It’s on a trip into the nearest town, Alpine Falls, where a young, blonde haired man comes to his rescue and changes his life.

Percy Collins is eighteen years old. He has also had a huge change in his life recently and now finds himself hungry and looking for any kind of work in Alpine Falls. When he comes across Albie needing help, he doesn’t hesitate. And when Albie offers him a job back at his farm, he jumps at the chance. He is determined to work as hard as his body will allow to make sure that they keep him on.

It doesn’t take long for a bond to form between Albie and Percy. One thing I had to get used to is that these two had nothing to compare the feelings they were experiencing to. They only knew they weren’t attracted to girls but are to each other. But what to do with those feelings, they had no idea. It was actually really sweet watching them figure things out. Watching their bond deepen. And, watching them mature and grow. It didn’t take long for Percy to really settle in and know that he had found his place in life. He was educated, so very intelligent, and had so much to offer. It just took him awhile to really feel confident enough with himself to contribute.

The second half of the book was more fast paced and I was one hundred percent invested. It was sweet and swoony and a beautiful love story. I truly loved Albie and Percy. The ending was perfect and left my heart so happy. So, if you are a historical romance lover, you’ll probably love it from page one. But even if you’re not like me, just be patient. I’m so glad I gave this a chance and hope you will be too.

“If I’m dreaming, don’t ever wake me.”

I guess this is the final proof I needed to accept NR Walker is no longer an author I should read. I was kind of looking forward to this book, as I loved the historical aspect and I hoped, maybe against better judgement, that this book was finally one I would love. Or at least enjoy.
But nope. I am totally bored out of my mind and the emotional depth that is present in her earlier work is just nowhere to be found. I don’t connect with the mc’s and I don’t care for them either. Which is such a shame because I think this book had so much potential! It really looks to me as though she has turned to writing as many books as possible without the investment she used to have. As if she isn’t really totally in love with her own characters. It all just feels so flat, so uninteresting and uninspired.
I’m just really disappointed and dnf’ed at 40%. No rating.

Gay Cowboys 🥹
I can't even begin to tell you how much I loved this book. It's been a minute since I've had a book touch my whole heart like this. I read it slow just so it wouldn't end.
I just knew it was going to be epic when I read that Percy was going to teach Albie to read 🥹
Everything in this book felt so real.
How scared and shy they were, but it felt too right to be wrong. There was no shame, drama, miscommunication, or break-ups. Just 2 MEN falling in love and running a farm together during a time when being with the same sex was illegal.

They have all their firsts together, and we get to read it all!!
I was teary-eyed when they " came out " to eachother, it was such a precious moment I was so happy to be a part of. Then, they had their first kiss 🥹🤭 I was smiling so big my cheeks hurt.
The awkwardness the first few times they messed around, I felt. I was nervous and excited with them.

"he began to rock his hips, rubbing and grinding. And Percy followed his rhythm, in a dance they’d had no lessons for, but their bodies seemed to know the moves."

By the end, they were horny teenagers using butter as lube 🤭
Warmed my heart and coochie.
It was spicy but meaningful spicy, you know?
Hot, sneaky, and forbidden feeling.
Full body tingle.
Absolutely delicious.

The descriptions of the mountains had me in awe.
Echo Creek sounded so beautiful.
I think my most favorite part was reading the descriptions in Percys POV when they rounded up the wild horses.
Des and Robert being badasses.

Their little found family really helped make the book.
Des and Robert were farm hands and such good men. Ugh. I loved them. BUT the girls were my favorite.
Elise and Clara are also in love and found sanctuary and a home at the farm to be themselves.
Their lil misfit family 🥹

The part where Elise slides Albie butter KNOWING they used it as lube the night before had me crackling. The whole family dynamic was so cute and homey.
I'd love a story on the girls.

I will say it was slowed paced, not as much struggle as I was expecting with very little conflict. I kept waiting for something bad to happen. NOPE
It's a love story with little drama.
I enjoyed every minute of it.

The ending had a few lil surprises. I absolutely loved for them.
Their 10 year epilogue made me so damn happy I didn't want to leave.

"Just seeing Albie across the paddock or in the stable, or God forbid, on his horse, Percy was lost to the sight of him. His heart skipped a beat every time and fluttered back to life. It made his breath catch, his blood sing. He loved him more each and every day and still could hardly believe that this was his life. That he got to be his truthful self, that he did an honest day’s work every day and could spend every night in the arms of the man he loved"

3rd person, dual POV
No OM.
No cheating.

Re-read 🎧 March 2025 as good as the first time. Adore Percy and Albie and this might be one of my favourites from this author.

I think I’m in my historical romance era and I am here for it.

For me, this book just epitomised everything NR Walker is great at. The epic scenery and the slowish burn was perfection. I’m usually a little critical of the spice in this author’s books but it was done brilliantly here. You really felt the way they were navigating their sexual relationship without the ability to ask for advice or to even read a book on it. It made the scenes feel raw and intense while being sweet and romantic.

I loved Albie and Percy sooo much. The side characters were also a highlight for me, I want to date Elsie.

The pacing of the story was great, the writing was beautiful and there’s not a thing I’d change. I can already tell this will be a comfort read I’ll keep coming back to. I didn’t even know I needed 19th century Australian cowboys in my life, but I definitely do. And you do too.

So so good, I really love NR Walker so when I saw this book I just knew it was going to be good, I mean cowboys in Australia in the 1800s? Yes, please!

There’s something amazing about the way the book is written that you can actually imagine yourself in the mountains trying to hunt Kangaroos 🦘 to make stew.

Albie and Percy were so adorable together from being al hesitant and shy to fully embrace their love for each other ❤️ and that epilogue was just the sweetest.

Albie’s and Percy’s love was so beautiful, so pure, so sweet. I loved their love, so much. I was smiling like an idiot for most of this book and melted everytime Albie called Percy ‘my love’.

It’s been such a long time since I’ve found myself fully transported into a story, place and time - and I enjoyed the hell out of it.

Even though there’s nothing overly dramatic and intense happening there’s still moments of tension where it feels like it’s going to lead to something but it ends up all working out peacefully.

The side characters were also great, making a perfect little family of misfits.

Had I gone into this expecting a wild ride filled with intensity and drama, then I would’ve found myself bored and disappointed, but since I knew exactly the type of reading I was in for, this suited my mood perfectly.

Book safety, content warnings, and tropes down below.

“You’re a light to my dark,” he said softly. “Where I see doom and gloom, you’re looking for a break in the clouds. You brighten me.”

I had a big smile on my face for most of this book. What a delightful read. Hearing the story of two young men who knew they couldn’t openly be themselves, who thought they would never get to have love or find their person, getting to have that life together? It was so sweet and tender, with two gentle and kind men who weren’t afraid of being vulnerable. I loved the entire book. Butter-lube included.

I’ve seen some reviews mention that it was ‘too easy’ or not enough happening, but I think maybe that was my favorite part. Why shouldn’t we get a story of two men finding that love in a time where most didn’t. Real life is more than shitty enough at the moment. It delivered on everything it was supposed to be, for me. It still tugged on my heartstrings and a low angst story doesn’t mean they didn’t have challenges.

The audiobook was amazing. Highly recommend.

Albie and Percy 🥰

One of my favorite movies is 'The Man From Snowy River' so there was very little chance I wasn't going to love this. I loved everything about it, from the characters, to the plot, the steamy scenes, and especially the HEA epilogue. 'The Men From Echo Creek' will be in re-read rotation and I can't wait to find out who's going to narrate the audio.

ETA: The audio performed by Glenn Lloyd is fantastic!

This book is 400 pages long, without a single fuck 😂😂😂 don’t worry there’s plenty of fucking, filthy and innocent and then not that innocent , but no written fucks 😅 it’s refreshing!

This was another aesthetically delicious book by NR Walker. This is the kind of book, when you end it, you’re face hurts from smiling so damn much ❤️

What a sweet nugget of gold, I was in need of babies Albie and Percy. Love reading first times, being able to feel their excitement, curiosity, nervousness, eagerness, shyness and when they experiment and discover pleasure? Love it, it’s like they don’t even know what to do with all that knowledge especially in 1800 were they couldn’t find guidance anywhere 😅

Albie’s gentleness was so so heartwarming, and Percy being loved and taken care of made me swoon like a fool, always smiling 😊 both lovely humans that deserve this happiness in the Australian highlands. They are both so polite and innocent, loved it. And…. Super HOT, these boys discovering things, wow… *fanning intensely *🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵

The found family was pure perfection, filled my heart and soul. That house is now full of happiness and lost souls that found their home 🫶 Elsie, Clara, Des and Robert, bless you all!

This is pretty low angst, all problems are resolved quickly, maybe it needed a bit more drama to make it more real, believable and a 5 ⭐️ for me. It actually made me edgy, I was always waiting for some tension or drama, but there’s none.
It was a bit insta yes, but imagine feeling something you thought was wrong and unnatural, and then finding that other feel it too, and together 💥 🫠🥹❤️🤠🥵 let’s just be happy they found each other 🙏

Albie collapsed on his side, pulling Percy into a strong embrace. “You,” he said, breathless. “I’m so weak for you.”
Percy chuckled. “Weak?”
Albie kissed Percy’s forehead. “Anything you want, whenever you want it, consider it yours.”
Percy sighed, his eyelids heavy, the lull of Albie’s warm body and deep breaths sending him to sleep. “I only want you. Nothing else.”
Albie kissed the side of his head. “I’m already yours.”

“Stay there,” he murmured. “Inside me, on top of me. Never leave me, Albie.”
He hadn’t meant it to sound like that, but once those words were out, he wasn’t sorry.
He meant every word.
Albie slipped his arms underneath him, around him, and he held him. “Never,” he breathed. “I will never leave you.”

4.75 ⭐

The Men From Echo Creek is my first actual cowboy romance—as in, we’re in 1882, baby, and these are real-deal cowboys living off the land. I’ve read N.R. Walker’s Red Dirt Heart and loved it—it gives similar vibes, but in a modern setting.

Albie and Percy are just so sweet. Two men of “a certain persuasion” finding each other and holding on for dear life while trying to prove they’re “true men” who can do what all the yappers say they can’t. This also has a lovely found family vibe—the entire ranch and the people who come and go create a strong, supportive community that believes in Echo Creek Ranch and wants to see it thrive.

Now, I will say the romance moves fast, but I get it. In that time period, there weren’t exactly a ton of safe ways to find someone who thought and felt the same way you did. So when you did? You held on. No slow burn, no waiting around. Just grab the love while you can.

I really enjoyed this coming-of-age, discovery-of-romance story set in the dusty cowboy days of Australia. Percy and Albie are so sweet together—and yes, I got a little teary toward the end. I was just so happy for them.

It’s cute, it’s emotional, it’s heartwarming, and just a good ol’ time. Plus, it’s a pretty quick read. If you’re into historical queer romance, especially one with found family and rugged charm, this is definitely one to pick up.

DNF at 53 % (page 200).

It was far too sweet. The instant attraction and lovey-dovey behaviour was really annoying and so unbelievable that I just didn't want to continue reading.

The historical aspect of the plot was a good idea, but not so much on paper.

Nothing was truly working for me. I’m not going to waste my time any more.

I really liked this book. 400 pages definitely worth reading, especially if you like historical romances.

You can expect something like

"Percy still in his arms, with his head on Albie’s chest, with the barest of sunlight touching the room, Albie was sure he knew. This is what poets and painters dedicated their lives to, and now he understood why."

and

🟢 Australia, 19th Century
🔵 Age - 18/19
🟣 Farming, horses, cattle, mountains, small town
🟡 Both MMCs gay
🟢 Almost no angst, considering
🟠 A sweet love story with a satisfying HEA and epilogue
🌶️ Good smut, both virgins and discovering gay sex together: t/b

Albie inherited his family's enormous farm when his father died, so at 19 and almost completely alone, he's determined to keep the farm going and despite the small town's envy, he manages to make it through.

When in Alpine Falls, the town next to his farm, he meets Percy, who's been thrown out of his home for not marrying a woman chosen for him and his family suspecting he's gay.

Both are young and hard workers, so Percy really has no problems fitting in at Echo Creek - Albie's ranch, he's a small and feisty, energetic young man who's very much afraid of anyone finding out he likes men, so he's cautious and held back quite a lot, but Percy and Albie quickly understand they're very much the same and decide to get to know each other better.

“I won’t force you to do anything you don’t want to do,” he said. “I can see you’re reluctant, scared, perhaps. I need you to know it’s fine. I will wait for your permission.”

They took it slow and since they had no idea what they were doing intimately at first, well ---

"Albie pushed in deeper, harder, groaning loudly. “Oh, this is heaven,” he whispered. “You take me to heaven, Percy.”"

I understood the holding back a little bit, because what they were doing was a taboo and completely forbidden, they were being careful with words and things they wanted to do, but I was really hoping that'll get a bit better once they get together.

But it really didn't. They kept correcting each other about language and such and I didn't like it, I thought they should've been a lot more relaxed with talking to each other, but I also took in the timeframe, so I'm letting it pass, but still I think as two men who were very intimate, their dialogues could've been more relaxed at times.

“Percy Collins, you listen to me,” he said sternly. “Nothing we do is wrong. Not one thing. You cannot sit there and tell me, after all that we’ve shared, after all that we’ve found in each other, that any part of us is wrong.”

Exactly that.

They had good banter, but it was also shot down pretty quickly. I wanted a little bit more of that.

"He gave Minnie’s forehead a scratch. “How’s my girl?”

“She wants hot food and a bath,” Percy replied.

Albie snorted and gave him a gentle shove. “Not you.”"
😄

The story did put more emphasis on the depth of their relationship and it definitely was believable, especially so because the people around them seemed to know but didn't mind. So at least that angst was left out, thankfully.

Overall it's a really good story of two men finding each other when almost all hope was lost for both; I enjoyed the setting, both main characters are lovely and the story is definitely one you'll want to read.

4.25 stars from me. Really enjoyed it, my first full new N.R. Walker story since Bossy in 2021. Many thanks to Dani, whose review persuaded me to take a chance on Nic again and buy it. Hopefully, this will be the start of many more new N.R. Walker stories on my bookshelf 🤞.

The characters, both main and secondary, were really good and the setting was great; my only minor criticism is that both Percy and Albie sometimes seemed older than their actual years [18 & 19], and Percy in particular was quite good at most things including cooking, which I wouldn't have expected for an historical character of the 'male' persuasion 😏, but it certainly wasn't sufficiently off-putting for me to stop reading.

I keep telling myself that I won't read this author anymore, but each time I keep picking up her newest release, hoping this time will be different...

To be fair, I was actually quite enjoying myself, right up until they finally started acting on all the pining between them. By the time they admitted their feelings to one another, it honestly felt like I was reading two entirely different characters. The personalities that were established in the first 1/3 or so of the book seemed to be entirely disregarded so that, I can only assume, the author could achieve a certain kind of dynamic she was looking for. But that could have absolutely been done without making the characters feel totally unrecognizable. Albie, despite being only one year older than Percy and just as inexperienced (one has to assume even less so, given he had far less exposure to people his own age) turns into a suave sex god, and Percy, who's been quite bold and confident throughout the book, suddenly turns into a shy, submissive flower--not sure why we couldn't have had the sweet, bumbling, first-time exploration from them both, which was what I'd been expecteing from the set-up. The shift in personality for me was jarring and I lost all interest in the characters that had previously been engaging. Possibly things get better as you read on, but the book wasn't good enough to make me persevere.

I've given this a C at AAR.

N.R. Walker used to be one of my go-to authors, but very few of her recent titles have worked for me. I think the last book of hers that wowed me was 2019’s Tallowwood , but I pick up her books occasionally, hoping to find the emotional depth and complex characters that used to characterise her work. Recalling the detail of the farming lifestyle and the wonderful imagery she brought to her contemporary Red Dirt  series, I had high hopes for The Men From Echo Creek, an historical romance set in the Snowy Mountain region of Australia in the early 1880s, but sadly, they were dashed. The Men From Echo Creek isn’t a bad book by any means, and if you’re looking for a low-angst, low-stakes, low… everything romance, it might be right up your alley. But it wasn’t what I was looking for.

When nineteen-year-old Albie Bramwell inherits his father’s two-thousand hectare mountain farm, the last thing he expects is for four of the farm hands to tell him they don’t want to work for him because he’s too young and inexperienced. It’s a shock that these men, whom he’s known for years, would abandon him on the day of his father’s funeral, but he’s determined to keep the farm going and show everyone that he’s just as much of a man as his father was, even though he has has no idea where to start. He’d imagined he’d have longer to learn the ropes under his father’s tutelage, but now he’s on his own with only two farmhands left, Des, who walks with a limp due to an injury, and Robert, a recovering alcoholic Albie’s father had helped straighten himself out.

A few days later, Albie rides into the nearest town, Alpine Falls, to pick up supplies and to put the word around that he’s looking to hire more men. As he’s tethering his horses outside the hotel where he’s staying the night, a feral dog appears from nowhere, its barking and snapping spooking both animals; one of them is on the verge of bolting when someone races up and grabs its tether, speaking quietly and quickly soothing the frightened horse. The man, who looks to be about Albie’s age, introduces himself as Percy Collins and says he’s looking for work; the next morning, Albie offers him a job at Echo Creek.

Percy quickly sets about making himself indispensible. He works hard, doesn’t mind what he does and endears himself to Des and Rob by being a much better cook than Albie! They’re strongly attracted to each other, although neither really knows what to do about it – or even if they should do anything about it, but longing looks and glancing touches turn into passionate kisses, pleasureable exploration and love as the weeks and months pass.

The romance between Albie and Percy builds slowly, which feels right for the time-period and for who they are. They’re young and sexually inexperienced and, given the absence of anyone to tell them otherwise, have wondered if perhaps they’re the only man who feels attracted to other men so they’re naturally cautious about making their interest in the other known. That aspect of their relationship is nicely done, but there’s very little romantic chemistry between them, and I just couldn’t buy them as being in love. Friends, yes, but more than that? No.

The characterisation lacks depth and complexity overall, although I did appreciate the depiction of Albie’s insecurities about his ability to run the farm successfully and how the cruel comments of others about his youth affect him. But apart from that, the characters are barely two-dimensional; we learn almost nothing of Albie’s backstory or anything about his father, and while there’s a little bit of mystery surrounding Percy to begin with, it’s dealt with quickly and doesn’t really have much bearing on the story – other than that his having had an education means he can help Albie with his reading and the farm accounts. (Oh, and he learned he doesn’t really like girls.) There no background supplied for Des or Robert, despite their being major secondary characters, and although there’s a little conflict promised in the form of the Big Bad – who owns the land that adjoins Albie’s - it fizzles out really quickly despite the build-up.

In addition to the lack of chemistry and conflict is the lack of atmosphere - in fact, I had to keep reminding myself that the story is set in Australia - and detail about life on the farm. I’ve already made the comparison between this book and the same author’s Red Dirt series, and to that I’ll add Jay Hogan’s current Mackenzie Country series, in which she brilliantly depicts life on a remote, New Zealand sheep station. I’d hoped for a similar level of detail about the lives of the people living and working on the farm in The Men From Echo Creek, but it’s just not there. Farming two-thousand hectares of mountain country without modern machinery and living without modern conveniences must surely have made for a very hard life, but we’re given no real indication of that – and I had to wonder how only four men could possibly manage it, especially given that one of them (Albie) has to spend time inside the house cooking, cleaning and doing accounts rather than working outside, and another (Des) has physical limitations. The best part of the story comes quite late on when the four of them ride out to round up a ‘mob’ of Brumbies (wild horses) – the exhilaration of the chase, the skill of the capture and the freedom afforded by being away from responsibility, albeit for a short time, come through really strongly.

There are plenty of four and five star reviews on Goodreads that disagree with my assessment, but The Men From Echo Creek is bland, overly sweet and lacking in emotional depth. ‘Vibes over plot’ romances seem to be in vogue right now – I don’t know if that’s a reaction to the stresses of modern life or something else (authors needing to publish three or four books a year maybe?) – but to pull them off successfully, the author has to get me invested in the characters and their situations (see We Could Be So Good ) and N.R. Walker just doesn’t do that here. With more misses than hits in her recent oeuvre, it’s probably time for me to accept that her books are no longer for me and move on.

4.5 🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎 (fast cows)

Other than the explicitly described sex scenes, this did almost read like a historical piece. There was romance and bravery and all the things. Wholesome, romantic and a little dirty.

Now excuse me while I learn how to make a damper.

Was this a groundbreaking book with a premise/story I had never ever read before? No.

Was this an absolutely comforting read, that had me smiling all throughout, silly giggling at times, leaving me with warm and fuzzy feelings, immediately entering my re-read/re-listen when in times of needing some cheer in your life list, talking to myself in the middle of the night like a madwoman because OH, MY BELOVED NR WALKER, WE HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE BACK? ABSOFREAKINGLUTELY!!

P.S. Formal petition to have Glen Lloyd do the narration of ALL NR Walker's books from now on PLEASE!!🙏🥰🙏🥰 THEY ARE A MATCH MADE IN AUDIOBOOK HEAVEN!!🥰🥰🥰

This is a typical NR Walker book, which means I’m not entirely satisfied with the story. It was very sugary sweet and sometimes unbelievable. I enjoyed the first half of the book; it was very strongly written. However, in the second half, I was desperate for the ending. I would have liked it if Albie and Percy had more foundation to their relationship rather than just instant attraction and love.

So much potential, but it wasn't delivered.

When I started reading gay romance NR Walker was one of my favorite authors, I just loved her books and I loved how unique her stories were. However, with many of her recent books I didn't have that feeling and even if they weren't bad I was somehow disappointed.
I was even reluctant to read her latest story, but the blurb sounded nice, so I gave it a try and fortunately I was not disappointed.
The story of Albie, who looses his father at the age of 19 and Percy whom he hires as a farm hand was a great read.
I loved the fact, that there was little drama within the relationship, but enough going on to keep the story interesting. I also loved how well fleashed out the side characters were.
I am not sure how realistic the possibility of such a relationship in that time would have been, but I loved it nonetheless and it was definitely sweet and fun to read about.
As usual I loved the Australian background of the story and I absolutely liked the beautiful epilogue, taking place 10 years later. Solid 4 star story for me!

‘you’re a light to my dark. where i see doom and gloom, you’re looking for a break in the clouds. you brighten me.’

no conflicts, just albie bramwell and percy collins being co-workers in public, and being their own little world (in short, them being boyfriends) in private in echo creek. (and percy's reaction is so cute when albie compliments his work)

but the dry-hümpïng threw me out when they first making out (at least they do it slowly) ☠️
also, the 🌶️ scenes kinda cringy for me (especially the words seed and manhood) but i enjoyed it nonetheless.

for the audiobook, this is the first time i've heard an australian narrator. and glen lloyd's accent is great (and since majority of walker's books are narrated by him, i want to hear more of his voice)

Will I always compare NR Walker’s books on a scale of one to Red Dirt Heart? Maybe. Nothing can live up to Charlie and Travis. But I kind of expected something along the same vein. Men farming in Australia, even if it is a different century. I expected the feels and some witty banter. We did get some of the banter. Percy reminded me a little of Travis. I needed to stress the “little” part because I actually found Percy to be more whiny than I like.

For me, this didn’t deliver on the feels I was looking for. The part of the book I enjoyed the most was the last 20% or so. It was exciting! When I first started reading, I was looking forward to these two men getting to know each other and working together when obstacles arose. It fizzled very quickly. The “obstacles” that I thought would happen turned out to be tiny blips in the story. The bad guys were no more of a problem than a fruit fly passing through. Everything was smoothed over so easily. I also found it difficult at times to discern which “he” was being talked about. The chapters were supposed to go back and forth between the two men’s POVs, but oftentimes it wasn’t very clear about which POV I was reading.

Ugh! 😩 I just found it all to be too flat. Nothing stirred my emotions! Not to mention that I wasn’t fond of the two MC’s names. Maybe Percy and Albie are common in Australia, but I couldn’t stop thinking of a movie quote from The Green Mile every time I read Percy’s name, and it wasn’t a flattering quote. I also found that once the men started kissing and having sex, there was no more real character development. It was just a lot of sex. I actually started skimming those parts. Idk, maybe it’s just me. But this wasn’t a real hit for me. 😞

This was a bit of a disappointment. I had hoped for more in terms of romance, characters, and details of the setting. My overall impression is "bland." Definitely not N.R. Walker's strongest work.

The MCs and their romance are both single faceted. Their "romance" consists of insta-love because neither of them has met another gay man before, and they're smitten the moment they notice each other's interest.

Although there are clear differences in their characters on paper—Albie is tall, masculine, and rugged, and Percy is smaller, boyish (even though they're both 19), and emotional—their POVs aren't written with distinct voices. It bothers me that their sexual dynamic is presumed without any conversation or curiosity—the smaller, "boyish," more emotional MC is a natural bottom, of course. No need to discuss it.

Speaking of sex, there's too much of it. I almost never make that complaint, because I love a good erotic romance as much as the next person. But sex seems the be the only substance of their relationship, and it gets boring quickly. Nearly all of their conversations are about sex, mostly one of them being extremely persistent about getting the other into bed despite their reluctance in the moment.

As for the plot, this isn't just low-angst, it's also low-everything else. There's not much in the way of plot, and since they start with insta-love and never encounter any obstacles, it's pretty same-y the whole time. There are a few events that break up the monotony, but neither of them results in character or relationship growth.

I think some readers might like this more than I did. If you like low angst and high heat with a thin veneer of a historical setting, maybe you'll enjoy. But this did not work for me.

I don’t love historicals but I loved this. It was sweet, touching, and low angst. I had a lovely time. Didn’t even notice the length!

3.75 stars. This was a surprisingly angst-free read, given the time period and circumstances. Sure, there were some very annoying men in town and they could never openly live together, but Albie and Percy had lovely people around them on the farm and at least there they could sort of be themselves. I loved the setting, with all the animals, mountains and creeks and just the simple day to day living. And they showed everyone who thought Albie would crumble under the weight that he was perfectly capable, with that majestic ride into town at the end!

If you loved the Red dirt heart series, I think you'll like this one as well, though I have to say Charlie and Travis (and Nugget and Matilda) are still my favorite (but it would be hard for any book to dethrone them, lol).
