This was such an emotional gut-punch. I found myself tearing up, feeling raw and exposed. I was also wondering who drove that car, but the true value here was how true it all felt. The author managed to really convey the pain the characters felt, and the feelings motivating their choices. A memorable read for sure.

Five for three!

Yes, five shining stars for "Three Mothers".

I was absolutely, positively transfixed by this emotionally jolting, character-driven, compelling, and gripping domestic suspense novel.

Unfolding from the POVs of three mothers, the story recounts the devastating aftermath of a teen girl's hit-and-run death in an affluent London suburb.

I listened to the audiobook, expertly narrated by Kristin Atherton.

I almost always prefer three narrators when a book unfolds from three POVs, but Kristin Atherton did an outstanding job with the narration and pulled it off with flying colors.

All the stars!

(╭ರ_•́) | pre-read- I need to utilize my KU and in the mood for a mystery so here we are 🫶🏼

I’m not sure how I feel about this. The first 40% I was super invested. The perspective from each mom in short chapters was prob the best part about this book. (Imma sucker for short chapters)

My face when I read Isla’s secret 😟
My face when I found out who did it 😐
My face when the “twist” happened 😐
My face during the conclusion 😐
Actually,my face through the second half of the book😐

I will say the ending was pretty disappointing and unexciting but the last 2 chapters written about grief when losing a loved one were written beautifully. 💕

Three mothers: Abby, whose daughter Isla is killed in a tragic hit and run. Nicole, Abby's best friend whose son Nathaniel has long had feelings for Isla. Jenna, mother of Callum, Isla's ex-boyfriend. Through multiple perspectives, the truth behind Isla's death is revealed.

I was hooked on this book from the first chapter, zipping through the whole thing in a day. The shorter chapters, and multiple perspectives and timelines kept things interesting. I had multiple guesses at what happened, but the ending was unpredictable and satisfying. This was a tough read at times with several sensitive topics, but I enjoyed the themes of forgiveness and love. This was my second read by this author and will definitely look forward to more.

This story is told from the viewpoints of three women whose families are all dealing with the aftermath of the tragic hit and run death of a teenaged girl. Part mystery, part domestic suspense, the plot unfolds through the present (after the accident), and the past (the months and days leading up to the tragedy). It is a very emotional story about grief, secrets, betrayals, and the undeniable instinct of every mother to protect and defend their child, regardless of the consequences. Extremely well-written, with authentic characters and some sensitive topics, I enjoyed this book more than I expected and could easily relate to each mother's particular heartbreak.

I liked this book, but I didn't love it.
I guessed the truth in about 10%, but what I did like, was the more secrets that were revealed, the more I doubted my initial theory, and then eventually got to "aha I knew it!".
One of the revealed secrets made me feel a bit queasy, but that's just good writing.

Got this is as my Amazon first reads for the month, and glad I did else I'm not sure I'd have stumbled across this book. Will look to read more by this author in the future.

2.5 stars not rounded up

This could have been a 4 stars book. It was a good plot. It was well written. But...

One star was dropped because the book it is insanely negative and the author (who loves to go into long monologs of inner dialogs), the author loves to explore in every detail possible those random worse case scenario one is creating in its mind when something happens. It also, finds all kind of ways to reiterate the same thing, repeating over and over something and dragging the actual action of the book. Basically nothing happens yet we wallow in these negative scenarios over and over.

One star was dropped because the author lied during the narration of the book. I do not like this at all. Not going to go into details as i don't wanna give any spoilers, but if you read the book, you'll know exactly what I mean. And it happened not once but in two instances.

One star was dropped for the ending. Yes it was predictable but it felt that the moral author of all the tragedies, the actual guilty party, gets away unscathed.

4 star novel.

Anna becomes worried when her daughter Isla is late coming home from a party.

Anna's husband died suddenly of a stroke only 5 years ago, leaving Anna struggling with daughters Isla and Clio. Isla, 17, is an excellent student, top tier athlete, and beloved friend. Clio, 14, is rebellious and has begun to despise being compared to her older sister.

Nicole is Anna's BFF. They've been close since their kids were born. Nicole's husband is a workaholic, and with the women so close, their kids have all grown up together. Nicole's sons Nathaniel and Jack are the same ages as Anna's daughters.

New to their school and community this year is Callum and his mother Jenna. At 17, he was accepted with a full scholarship to their prestigious school. He made friends easily and began dating Isla, though Anna has made it clear she's not a fan and considers him not good enough for her daughter.

Told in before and now timelines, we learn how interwoven these families have become, the various jealousies and misunderstandings, and finally, how all of these various interactions lead to Isla's death.

This was a quick and very entertaining read, and I became suspicious about each of the characters in turn, without having guessed at the ending.

*RANT:

Thank you to Lake Union Publishing and NetGalley for an ARC of this novel in exchange for my honest review.

Hannah Beckerman's "Three Mothers" is a captivating masterpiece that deserves nothing less than five stars.

The story is told from three mother's perspectives and involves their children, husbands and friendships. Abby and Nicole have been friends ever since their children were small, Jenna is the outsider, her son Callum having been awarded a bursary at Collingswood, the school Isla and Nathanial already attend, The children's relationships are played out on the pages, but all is not always as it might appear.

This book is a thought-provoking journey that challenges readers to look at life differently. It deftly touches on deep and significant issues such as prejudices, grief, and the complexities of human emotions. The characters are beautifully developed, and their stories are both poignant and relatable.

The plotting was absolutely brilliant, with the gradual unveiling of secrets that led to the heart-wrenching tragedy. The author masterfully handles the three women's viewpoints, weaving them together to create a rich, multifaceted narrative that keeps you engaged from start to finish.

"Three Mothers" is not just a book; it's an experience that stays with you long after you've turned the last page. It is a must-read for anyone who appreciates powerful storytelling and the exploration of the human condition. Highly recommended!

I was actually really into this book for the first three quarters or so. It wasn't perfect, but I thought it was a well-constructed and generally well-written story. Unfortunately, the final 25% lost me. Without spoiling it, this is one of those mystery books that relies on outright lying to the reader. I think that's such a lazy way to conclude your story, and I hate how many books fall back on it. But ending aside, the book was mostly okay.

Jenna and her son were the most disjointed part of this book. They had many potentially-interesting aspects to them, like their class struggles in their community, but all of this fell away by the end. As it was, they were barely related to the overall story (I think Jenna only talked to Abby and Nicole once at the very beginning). Either they needed to be built up more or just dropped altogether.

Abby was arguably the main character (it was a pretty solid ensemble, but if I had to pick — it is her daughter who is dead, after all), and I couldn't stand her. She has a younger daughter, Clio, who she treats horribly. It's a whole plot point, but it never goes anywhere. Just like with Jenna, it was frustrating for the book to bring up all these tough and engaging topics without being prepared to fully see them through. It almost seemed like the book was stumbling over itself to defend mothers and prove that as long as they love their children all transgressions will be forgiven, when reality is so much more complicated than that for so many people.

As far as the mystery goes, it was mostly fine. I did sort of know who it was, and after the one big reveal near the start, it was more of "unpacking a timeline" than "solving a mystery." I wish it had committed more to either being a mystery or being a literary fiction exploration into class conflict, motherhood, and the dangers teenagers face. As it was, it made both aspects feel half-baked.

The ending was a letdown. As I said earlier, it sucks for a mystery to just be lying the whole time. Aside from that, I thought everything wrapped up too nicely. It wasn't a perfectly happy ending for everyone, but we were definitely lacking consequences. Instead of seeing genuinely character development, for better or for worse, we just got a series of dramatic inner-monologues from each other and then an epilogue that explained why everything is mostly okay now. It cheapened the whole thing.

Maybe moms will tolerate the ending more than me, who was reading this because I am a fan of mysteries. But overall, I was really let down by this book. It had a lot of potential and then failed to follow through on anything it promised.

Domestic Thrillers
Narrated by Kristin Atherton. Length: 8 hrs and 23 mins
Release date: 05-01-25

At the beginning of THREE MOTHERS Abby Richardson is waiting for her 17-year-old daughter Isla to come home from a party. Isla was supposed to be at home at 10PM but there's no sign of her and she's not responding to Abby's texts. Then there's a knock on the door. And she hears the most devastating news. From there we get to follow stories of three mothers connected by the tragedy. As Abby begins her search for the truth, she discover that there are so many things she did not know about her daughter. Someone close to her may have wanted to harm Isla in order to silence her for good...

This is one of those stories that make you question how far would you go to protect someone you love. What is the line you don't cross even if they are the most dearest for you? Story is told from different perspectives, so we get to see how the tragedy and stupid decisions affect everyone. It makes story a bit predictable but at the same time it is good to see what make characters act the way they do.

4.5 ⭐️ !
I really loved this book! It was raw, thrilling & full on addicting. I finished in less than 24 hours because i just needed to know the ending! After a teenage girl, Isla, is the victim of a fatal hit and run accident, secrets are revealed about her friends, relationships, & life leading up to the accident may have impacted her fate. Told in the POV of Isla’s mom, her ex boyfriends mom, and her mothers best friend, details emerge all leading up to one big reveal 😬🤯 definitely gave me Freida McFadden vibes! If you love her, add this to your TBR!

Isla is unexpectedly killed and her mother is trying to come to terms with her loss. She starts going through Islas things and she discovers secrets that make her question her relationship with the people closest to her.

As a mother I expected to connect with the characters. I thought the beginning of the book was interesting but the second half dragged and became repetitive. I thought this book had a lot of potential but the character development of the three mothers was lacking. I ended up skimming the end to find out what happened but I didn’t love this one.

This book. What today’s teenagers face is really sad when I think of my teenage years. They have their lives documented every second. They face weapons that I can’t even image getting my hands on. And parents? You love your kids and want to protect them, but when is it too much? Is there too much?

There was nothing unpredictable about this story. You know who the killer is almost immediately, but it's still a haunting and gripping story. Well worth the read.

A genuinely wonderful reading experience. Three mothers, three families experiencing normal familial drama as well as complicated, terrible trauma. Quite a few unexpected twists and tangles kept the story moving. The narrator did an excellent job.

I actually liked the plot, story, characters, but there was also quite a lot that I didn’t like. 83% in and the actual story was done and then it was like a (not so) happily ever after.

I have three pretty big gripes.
1. How they portrayed ADHD. The kid was 15. He didn’t need to be babysat. He didn’t need to be buckled in the car. If it was another disease or illness, maybe, not ADHD.

2. Why include the part about Clio doing awful things to Isla’s pictures, but nothing at all comes of it besides jealousy? Idk this was a plot point that either didn’t need to be included at all or definitely could have been elaborated on more.

3. I wish Jenna & Callum had a more important role in the story, especially since Jenna had a few POV chapters, but in all honesty, it was kind of just like filler chapters to me.

On the bright side, there were lots of words throughout the story that I’d never heard before, as an American reading a British author.

I didn’t seen any trigger warnings, but I imagine there are readers who would appreciate them with some of the content that is throughout the book.

The story kept me wanting to keep reading to figure out the mystery and I liked the different perspectives throughout. And the ‘before and after’ chapters.
But the story fell apart in places and ‘mysteries’ from each character were left unexplained. I did figure out the ‘who’ (and you probably will too) but the “gasp reveal” ended up being frustrating to me. We had been following each character throughout the book it just didn’t ring true.

Trigger warnings: sexual relationship with a minor, abortion.
That said, this book gave me the ick, but I had to know if I was right about the culprit so I kept on. Interesting and heartbreaking read.

A solid domestic drama with a smooth narrative and well-drawn characters. I’m deducting a star because the culprit felt predictable—the reveal wasn’t particularly shocking, more a gradual unpacking of connections between the characters that the reader senses early on. Still, it’s a well-crafted and engaging story.
