I enjoyed these slow-paced chapters a lot because they focused more on world-building and characters' backstories like Henry and Martha; their story is heart-wrenching, and the sentiments Endo-sensei is conveying are relevant to this day.
Although I love Spy x Family best when it's funny (welcome back, Wet Bond!), Endo's ability to also make it poignant while capturing the horrors of WWII are also stunning. This volume, which takes us into Mr. Henderson's not-so-elegant past, is a striking portrait of how war affects everyone, both past and present. It's not pretty. It's not funny. It's not meant to be, and that Endo can make it as emotional as he does is a testament to the strength of this series.
This is probably my favorite recent volume. It balances two overlapping stories, one very cute and funny story with Anya, and the other a more tragic backstory for another character, very well.
When I started this manga I thought it was just some cute found family story, but wow, the anti-war messaging is so powerful. And of course Damianya at the dance is adorable.
This volume started strong even if it was just a locked room mystery that a classic mystery writer would have written flaws and all. But then the minutia of school politics and social classism for a dance. It was so bad. Then we get chapter after chapter of Mr Elegant's life as a student and the girl he loved. Not elegant at all. 2.5 stars - boring - does not advance the overall story.
✨Writing a grouped review for all the volumes I have read at the time of writing (volumes 1-15). I read these over the course of a few months and don't remember all the specifics of every volume except what I rated them ✨
I think this is my favourite manga that I have ever read (so far).
Spy x Family is what you get when you combine humour, family drama, wholesomeness and tension and put a spy and assassin in the middle of it. It follows Loid Forger on his mission in which he needs to recruit a small child and women to play his wife and child. He does so, never realising his wife is an assassin and his child a telepath. Chaos ensues.
I love that Anya is the only one who knows the truth. Her interactions with everyone and reactions to events from her POV are hilarious and is a large reason as to why I love this manga so much.
We can't forget about the dog who can tell the future too. I love that big puppy.
this whole henderson arc almost single handedly has convinced me that we’re never getting yor loid end game and im big mad like go back to the PRESENT what are we DOING
5/5 Stars ⭐ ✨ This volume is exceptional, showcasing Anya in her typical brilliant manner. While much of the story focuses on Henderson, Anya's elegance-obsessed teacher, it also reveals his past alongside Martha's. Unfortunately, a war separated them, preventing their romance from developing. The writing and illustrations are outstanding. I found the timeline a bit confusing, but it seems there were two wars: one involving Henderson and Martha, and decades later, the one that Loid participated in. 📝 💃
