Harrison Troyer has been a ghost for over a decade. . . His future silenced by the threat of prison. But now, the secrets that haunted him can no longer remain buried.

Now living in the shadows as a private investigator in Alaska, Harrison is sent to Evergreen Falls, Maine to find a desperate mother’s missing daughter.

Eden’s story of survival is harrowing—and eerily connected to a case Harrison is chasing. As they team up to unravel her abduction, Harrison realizes Eden may hold not only the key to exposing a dangerous predator but also answers to his missing persons.

Forced into an uneasy alliance with law enforcement, Harrison and Eden plunge into a chilling web of lies, secrets, and deadly truths. With each step closer to justice, the lines between their hunt for the killer and their fight for survival blur. And as their growing bond threatens to thaw hearts long frozen by grief, they must face a final can they stop a killer before the past destroys them both?

So, what really happened to Harrison Troyer since he left St. Ignatius, Montana?

This long-awaited and highly anticipated sequel to Among The Innocent is a five-star nailbiter focusing on second chances. Known for her high-octane faith novels, Mary Alford writes to inform readers about what transpired in the thirteen years since Harrison disappeared.

In today’s hyper-connected world, disappearing seems challenging. If you were going to slip away quietly without leaving a trace, where would you escape to? How would you spend your ‘new life’?

Harrison needs to rely on his survivalist skills as he embarks on a new lifestyle that requires him to be constantly vigilant and adaptable. When he’s swept into the investigation of a cold case crime he’s reminded about the price of freedom, the value of a monster’s promise, the agonizing reality of making inconceivable choices and the heavy burden of remaining hidden.

My heart was pounding as I read about an evil monster who, fuelled by obsession, went to great lengths to protect a secret and his identity.

We’ve all wanted to go back in time at one point or another in our lives. We’ve all muttered, “If only I…” But few of us have any idea what it’s like to live in captivity, to experience a long overdue rescue, or to cut communication with loved ones. Alford gave me a glimpse of what some endure at the hands of the misguided and misunderstood. Hope for happy endings had me anxiously turning pages.

I have a feeling that Alford isn’t finished with the Plain people of St. Ignatius and I’ll be waiting to see if she continues with this duology.

I could not put this book down! The mystery and suspense draws me into the story and wouldn't let me go.

I loved that Harrison confronts his own fears of police and investigates the disappearance of the girls in Maine. The strength and determination of these girls was remarkable.

Throughout the story I was impressed with the author's ability to take the story in a direction that I didn't expect.

Thanks so much to the author for the arc. The opinions are my own.

Beside the Dead is a powerful and totally absorbing story. This brilliantly plotted narrative pulled me in immediately, and perfectly timed and measured revelations sustained my interest to the end. Richly drawn, compelling characters kept me firmly invested in the outcome. Strategically placed scenes written from the villain’s point of view intensify the suspense, mystery, danger, and impending evil deeds. Even though my early suspicions about the identity of the villain turned out to be fact, it did not lessen the suspense or excitement of the revelation. The realistically and vividly sketched North Woods Maine setting transports you to the scene and heightens the sense of danger. Although, the romantic element is light, it is emotional and equally important to the fast-paced, action-packed story. I love this story of survival and second chances, and I highly recommend it as a must read for Inspirational Romantic Suspense fans! NOTE: Although this book is a follow up to Among the Innocent, it is easily read as a standalone.

I was pulled in from the beginning.

Readers met Harrison in Among the Innocent. He left his Amish family in Montana to avoid a false arrest. Some time later, Harrison is in Maine searching for a client's daughter that's been missing for over 20 years. Once in Maine, it's clear there is more than one missing female and a dark villain still at work.

Unraveling who the villain's identity was a twisted path as there were a few candidates. I would have found the novel stronger without the minor amount of romance. It would have been more realistic for the romance to blossom after months or years had gone by. Overall though, this was an engaging read and I look forward to the next in the series. Good cover!

My gratitude to the author for a complimentary e-copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.

Wow! What an intense, incredible story! I was riveted from first few lines and had to keep turning pages until the very end. It’s been a while since I’ve had an ‘all in one sitting’ read, so this was fun.

And so intense! Evil was its own character in Beside the Dead—at least it felt like it. Have you ever been around a situation or in a place that just felt so wrong and it made your skin crawl?

I have, and that’s the kind of wrongness Alford has crafted here.

But wait! There’s more! The thread of faith woven throughout the story was a bright beacon of hope for both the characters and the readers. It wasn’t heavy handed and had a natural flow, feeling very genuine and rich.

I figured out the who and was a tad bummed to be right, but Mary Alford threw in several red herrings that caused some doubt. I’ve read enough suspense to not fall for the false trails—mostly!

I received an advance copy from the publisher. I’m under no obligation whatsoever. This is my honest opinion, and I strongly recommend you read this book!

Wow! A lot of action and suspense. Some romance thrown in. Several twists and turns. I recommend reading this book.

Harrison goes to investigate a old case of a missing girl and stumbles upon a young women in the snow. Then they are attacked! What is going on? Will he be able to protect her along with the police? What secrets do they both have that are hidden that must come to light?

This novel had me mesmerized from the beginning to the end and I was completely absorbed in the story and the lives of the characters. I sympathized with Harrison, a young man who was almost an outcast through life’s circumstances. I was horrified with the life that Eden had been forced to live, and I was hopeful for a good outcome for the Sheriff, Samantha Baker. The setting of Maine was perfect, with so many hidden and undiscovered places there for the action to methodically unravel. The plot was fast-moving and consistently intriguing, with red herrings and twists that kept me guessing and wanting to find out what would happen next. The author did a great job of pulling me into the story so that I was invested in a happy ending although I did not see how that was going to be possible considering the evil that was all around the main characters. This is an edgy, suspense-filled book which gave me all of the chills, thrills, and heart throbs that I enjoy in a well-written romantic suspense. The big reveal of the villain was perfectly executed to create the most drama and pulse racing scenes that I have ever read. This is Christian fiction at its best, with a firm foundation of faith flawlessly combined with a compelling story.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. I also preordered my own personal copy because I love the author’s books and highly recommend them to everyone. All views expressed are completely my honest opinion.

Wow, this was a very complex story with a very evil villain.
Harrison, from the first book in the series Among The Innocent, fled to Alaska and became a private investigator. A search for a girl missing for over 30 years brings him to Evergreen Falls Maine, where he finds another girl that has escaped from a bunker where she was held for years.
This was a very exciting story with lots of possible perpetrators and danger at every turn. In a relatively small area, everyone knows everyone else and there are many connections. Even the deputy chief of police, Samantha, has a sister, who went missing around the same time as the woman that Harrison is searching for.
With many twists and turns and a snowstorm that makes things difficult, the cops combat explosions and shootings to uncover the truth.
This was a very suspenseful story that adds to the first book in the series and promises more revelations in the next book.

Beside the Dead was a seriously exciting page turning book. You've got a boy being framed for murder in the beginning to present day and a serial kidnapper.
I kept going back and forth on who the kidnapper was, between 2 guys.
But still, at the end, when I knew for sure, it was crazy!! That ending blew me away. And I loved how the epilogue tied everything all together. It's a great book.

Beside the Dead is a story filled with heartbreak, terror, suspense, and a sweet romance. I was kept on the edge of my seat most of the way through the book. There was nonstop action and enough twists and turns to keep me wondering what would happen next. It kept me guessing until the end.

Even though the storyline involved a sensitive subject, it was handled well, without all the gore. The spiritual content was woven throughout the story, conveying a sense of hope despite everything going on. There was also a chance for redemption and forgiveness.

The ending left me in a place of inspiration and brought forth a sweet romance.

I received an ARC from the author; a positive review is not required. All opinions are my own.

Ever since I read Among the Innocent, I have been DYING to know what happened to Harrison. Okay, maybe that’s being a little overly-dramatic, but not by much. I was so captivated by this off-page character, and I’ve frequently thought about that novel over the last two and a half years and wondered when we would get Harrison’s story. And now the wait is over, thanks to the release of Beside the Dead! (Side note: if you haven’t yet read Among the Innocent, you CAN read this book without feeling too lost because a) Alford gives you the pertinent info anyway and b) this particular suspense investigation is unrelated to the events in Among the Innocent. But, if you HAVE read that first book, you’ll appreciate the layers to Harrison’s backstory more.)

After a prologue that reminds us why Harrison has disappeared for thirteen years, Alford drops us into an intense fight for survival. I felt like I was scrambling to escape that creepy underground prison and fleeing desperately through the heavy snow right along with Eden, my heart equal parts in my throat and back in that bunker with Rachel who wasn’t physically strong enough to leave. Who were these women? Who was keeping them prisoner? How long have they been missing? Do they know the woman that Harrison has left Alaska and come to Maine to find at the request of a desperate mother? Do they know the missing-just-as-long sister of the local deputy sheriff? All of these questions raced through my mind in the span of the first couple of chapters and had me solidly engaged in figuring out the answers, whatever they would eventually be. And what a ride it was, with a truly disturbing perpetrator. I kept changing my mind on who I thought was behind it all, and while my initial suspicions ended up being correct, I doubted my guess all the way up to the last second.

Bottom Line: Beside the Dead by Mary Alford grabbed me from the very beginning and wouldn’t let me go. Its layered characters, vividly-drawn Maine North Woods setting (which is really another character in many ways), riveting high-tension suspense, mercurial scenes from the villain’s POV, quick pace, and sweet romance all make this story impossible to put down. I wanted to read the book for Harrison (and getting ‘the rest of the story’ on his life since Montana was exactly what I wanted) but I also really loved getting to know Eden & Samantha and the other characters too. A compelling supporting cast, in fact, that makes me hopeful Alford will continue to write books set in Evergreen Falls, Maine, as well as back in St. Ignatius, Montana, where my need for Harrison’s story began.

This is a very entertaining and deeply emotional book. From the first page to the last I was almost living it with Harrison and Eden as the story progresses. The twists and turns in this story will keep you riveted until the last page. Harrison has something in his background that makes him Leary of cops, but, the woman he’s searching for has left him with no clues. Eden has escaped from someone full of evil. She escapes during a blizzard and walked out in front of Harrison’s car. Evil is looking for her and she has no idea what he looks like. And so it begins.

I always love when I enjoy the sequel more than the first book! This one wasn’t nearly as frustrating as Among the Innocent in terms of catching the bad guy. Beside the Dead focused more on the mystery, and was super fast-paced throughout! I couldn’t put it down and read it all in one day! I loved all of the characters and just thoroughly enjoyed reading this overall. 5 stars!

I can’t even begin to describe how captivating this book was. This is a sequel to AMONG THE INNOCENCE. But I do feel it could be red as a standalone.
The story of two wonderful characters that had very troubled passed.
Harrison was on the run because of falsely being accused of four murders .
Eden’s life was hard to put into words. I honestly don’t know how Mary did it. But I guess that comes from her being an amazing author.
After being wrongly accused Harrison headed to Alaska he’s been there for the last 13 years. Well there met a good man named Nate, who took him under his wing. Now Harrison is a private detective. He’s been called back to Maine to work on a case of a missing girl. He soon finds out that it involves multiple missing girls and a cold case.
This is a compelling story, filled with intrigue and mystery.
It’s definitely an edge of your seat read. It’s heartbreaking with a rewarding ending.
This is my honest review in return for this complementary copy sent to me by the author herself.

BESIDE THE DEAD by Mary Alford is the fabulously written, can’t put down, pulse pounding, romantic thriller telling of Harrison and Eden’s story. Two people from different worlds, both with fears from their pasts, as mortal danger lurks in the present, finding a bit comfort from each other.

Harrison was born as Harrison Troyer and lived as Amish in the life that now seems so far away. After a sheriff framed him for several murders and fixed it to where he had false evidence against him, he told Harrison if he didn’t leave, never to return or to have contact with his family ever again, he would see he was put in prison for the rest of his life. Feeling he had no choice, and as hard as it was to leave everything he’d ever known, he left Montana knowing he’s never be able to return. He changed his last name to Tucker and ended up in Alaska where he started a new life. He learned trapping from an elderly man enabling him to make a living. He even put enough money back to buy a place to live. Then he met Hank. With a similar feeling of pasts best forgotten, Hank hired him on as a private investigator. Most of their work had been locally or close by, but when Hank was approached to find a missing 15-year-old girl that disappeared 23 years ago, he knew it was a job that they would try their best to accomplish. With his past, Hanks knew he wasn’t going. He sent Harrison to Evergreen Falls, Maine to do some digging. He was beginning to think his trip was going to be a washout because clues weren’t panning out and he was running out of ideas. He’d even forgone his fears from the past and entered the police station to inquire about the missing girl. That’s when he found out the strangest coincidence. Seems the deputy sheriff’s sister had also disappeared 23 years ago.

Chief Deputy Samantha “Sam” Baker will hopefully be replacing her Uncle Owen as the sheriff at his upcoming retirement through a special election. Owen’s been like a second father to her. After the disappearance of Mae, her older sister, her father took full responsibility for it. On the one-year anniversary of her disappearance, he killed himself. Owen had stepped in to help her mother and herself bringing order and some sort of normalcy to their lives. Each year on the anniversary of Mae’s vanishing, so many questions would come to the surface. Then to have this strange man in town asking questions about Allison on same day Mae disappeared almost seemed too much to be a mere coincident. Sam’s never given up hope of finding her sister. Although life had gone on and she’s even been drawn to Cade, a former FBI and fellow officer that’d been on the force 8 years now, she’s never felt like her life could move forward until Mae was found.

Arriving home after the visit to the police department, Harrison could tell someone had been there. He found the snowmobile missing from his rental house. While out searching for it, Harrison came across an unconscious woman lying in the road, ill-clad for such extreme winter conditions. Getting out to check on her condition, he found she had been hurt. Upon coming to she was very frightened. After assuring her he was going to help her, he got her in the truck and put in a call for help. After being shot at and figuring out someone was out to do both of them harm, Harrison knew immediately that he would do anything in his power to keep this woman, a stranger to him up until a few minutes ago, safe. With all she’s been through, Eden didn’t know why or how, but she knew without a doubt that this man meant her no harm. She would get him to help her find Rachel, who she’d had to leave behind when she wasn’t able to get out the hole she’s made to escape the evil of her tormentor.

Is there a connection between the Allison that Harrison is looking for and Sam’s sister Mae’s disappearance? Could they possible be alive after all this time? If they are, what horrors have they experienced? After an explosion and the fire it created, will all clues be lost? Will other clues seem to point to Isaac Ranken, Mae’s old boyfriend? When they find Rachel out in the elements, injured and unconscious, will she hold any pieces to the puzzle – and will she live to tell them? When Hank tells Harrison that a P.I. had been inquiring about him, could it be someone inquiring on behalf of Chief Ellis Petri and his promise to put him behind bars for life? Can Harrison keep his promise to keep Eden safe? What other secrets will come out about Mae’s life before she disappeared? How many other girls could there be? Will Sam begin to question even members of her own police department? Can loved ones be reconnected – even after 23 years? Can love bloom under even the most unusual of circumstances?

BESIDE THE DEAD is a magnificent and powerful story of being wrongly accused, survival, strength of character, perseverance when others have given up, conquering evil, family, mystery and suspense that will have you heart beating faster and faster as you quickly turn the pages. Mary Alford wrote it with a wonderful thread of faith woven so seamlessly through the whole story, even while at times not spoken you know it’s there. She delivered us a story that, I guarantee you, will leave you gobsmacked at the reveal. BESIDE THE DEAD is positively a FIVE STAR book that I wholeheartedly recommend. The reader must understand that abduction and imprisonment are often difficult and harsh subjects even when done tastefully.

BESIDE THE DEAD can be read as a complete standalone book. It is, however, a follow up book of AMONG THE INNOCENT. In BESIDE THE DEAD you get to see what happened to the Harrison character next. After reading this book, if you haven’t read AMONG THE INNOCENT, I know you will be wanted to read it as well as other books by this amazing author.

I receive a copy of this book with no requirement or expectations of a review. All opinions are completely my own.

Harrison Troyer has been living the quiet life, staying out of the limelight as a private investigator in Alaska. His job sends him to Evergreen Falls, Maine to find a missing daughter for a desperate mom that just wants answers. Little did he know that he may no longer be able to stay to himself when a terrified woman, Eden stumbles into his hideaway in Maine begging for help to escape a killer. Her harrowing escape and her survival sounds similar to the current case Harrison is working and realizes Eden may be the key to solving it. They will team up to solve her abduction along with Deputy Samantha Baker who is searching for her missing sister that's been gone for 23 years now. Samantha feels Eden's disappearance is similar to her sister's case and suspects the evil person has returned to prey on Evergreen Falls. They must unravel this mystery and keep Eden safe from clutches of the evil person again. Can Harrison trust this law enforcement officer? He realizes he must in order to keep Eden safe and to figure out what happened to the missing woman he is searching for. Will they all be able to stop this evil before the past destroys them all? This book was wow, amazing! So much to wrap your head around and keeps you spinning trying to figure out what is going on and what is going to happen next! Great read and full of suspense. I highly recommend this book, you don't want to miss out on this! Just wowsers! Great job Mary!

I have been waiting for Harrison ‘s story since I read Among the Innocent, and we get it in Beside the Dead by Mary Alford. Mary Alford has skillfully woven a tale that keeps readers on the edge of their seats, offering both thrills and heartfelt moments. Alford’s ability to craft well-developed characters adds depth to the narrative, making each revelation and interaction meaningful. The mystery was intriguing. There were several suspects plus some red herrings. As an avid mystery reader, I zeroed in on one person early in the story (my mother says I have read too many mysteries). I eagerly followed the clues to see if I had correctly identified the guilty party. I enjoyed the action and suspense which kept things lively. There is a good reveal and wrap up at the end. A touching romance for Harrison that, while a bit hurried, still adds a layer of warmth to the chilling suspense. Harrison's journey through the shadows of his past while navigating the complexities of new relationships is both engaging and emotionally resonant. Beside the Dead is an emotional story. The sinister undertones of the story serve as a stark reminder of the darkness that can reside within individuals, making the twists and turns of the plot even more compelling. Beside the Dead is a captivating tale with a missing offspring, absent remembrances, a twisty mystery, an evil entity, a shocking explosion, and a surprising revelation.

Harrison Troyer was forced to disappear and leave his family and his Amish community behind. But he has never forgotten them. The author gives you plenty of background so that you can understand where he came from and how he has arrived where he is today. So, even if you have not read the first story, Among The Innocent, you will still understand the background of the main character.

He is now a private investigator who has arrived in Evergreen Falls, Maine to investigate the disappearance of a young woman. She disappeared many years ago, but her mother has never given up hope. What he discovers in this quiet town chilled me to the bone.

A young woman stumbles into Harrison's path with a horrifying story to share. He wonders if Eden might hold the key to helping him solve his mystery.

Wow! This was quite the story. I was fully invested in this book from the first chapter and read it cover to cover in one sitting.

The author gives you a view into the mind of a very disturbed man who is responsible for some heinous acts. The mystery was impressive. I had a pretty good idea of the culprit, but I doubted myself a few times because I did not want to believe it.

This inspirational thriller will grab you by the throat and not let go.

Author Mary Alford took me through a gamut of emotions while reading Beside the Dead. I was terrified, shocked, and often repulsed, but I couldn't stop reading! I had to learn more about the intriguing characters, mystifying setting, and good-versus-evil theme that plays such a strong role in this story.

I read the book that introduced Harrison Troyer several years ago, but don't worry if you haven't read Among the Innocent. Alford does an excellent job establishing the background so that you're immediately caught up in the mysteries surrounding a young woman who disappeared several years ago and another young woman caught up in a present-day nightmare. Could there be a connection?

Beside the Dead is a compelling thriller, and the scenes that relay the villain's point of view are absolutely chilling! I recommend this book to all who enjoy romantic suspense novels, and I hope there will be more books with these characters!

While I can't write like others can I do believe this was the best Mary Alford book yet.
She is an excellent author that puts her characters through many trials and tribulations to help find these many missing persons.
Along the way you will learn many things about crime scenes that you thought you knew from TV but I love how this author brings it to more realistic feelings and many more twists and turns than on TV.
I felt the hairs stand on the back of my neck many times make no mistake and looking over my shoulders too.
I love the way Alford adds faith along the way to help these characters get through their dilemmas.
I think my favorite part is the slow burn romance and the Hope it offers along the way.
5 stars for keeping my attention all the way through! A book you won't anytime soon forget or it's characters!
Oh and did I mention that this book is exciting well?
I highly recommend!

One word, Amazing! I have been waiting on this book and it didn't disappoint. This is the second book in a series though it doesn't need to be read in order, but you will have the backstory of Harrison. Harrison has been living in Alaska and is helping a private investigator, who has just taken on a missing persons case. The missing girl has been missing over twenty years. Last place that she was seen was in Maine. That's where Harrison goes and one night in a snowstorm a young girl falls into the road in front of his truck. Who is the girl, where did she come from and is she related to the missing persons case? There is evil lurking in the town of Evergreen Falls. You won't see the end coming. I was Blown away by who all was involved and everything that happened. I want to thank the publisher for an early copy of the book. I was not required to leave a positive review, all opinions expressed are my own thoughts of the book.

Again Wow! This is a mystery suspense that you just can’t put down. Such a powerful story by an outstanding author. Beside the Dead by Mary Alford is all that and more.

An ex-Amish man who is now a private investigator from Alaska, is thrown into a missing persons case that leads him to Main. Harrison enters into a series of events that can only be described as horrific.

Eden’s experience can only be described as horrifying. So many twist and turns, the mystery continues to build.

Each character is important to the story and adds to the twist and turns. There is even a little romance thrown in for good measure.

This book grabs your interest from the first sentence and never lets go. It is a powerful read. I highly suggest you order this 5-star read today. You will not be sorry.

I was given an ARC by the author, but was not required to give a positive review., all thoughts are my own.

Release day is February 25, 2025.

LOVED this book!! Harrison meets Eden when he goes to Maine looking for a missing woman. Instead of finding Allison, Harrison finds Eden after she stumbles out of the woods in front of his truck. Harrison was raised Amish, but when he's told he either runs and hides or goes to prison for a crime he didn't commit, Harrison left. Now, he's got to go to the police for help for Eden and Allison. Sam's being trying to find her sister, Mae, for twenty-three years. Now, she knows Mae has something to do with Eden and Allison. She knows Harrison isn't involved, she's just not sure who is. When trouble comes for Eden, will Sam and Harrison be able to stop the person from killing more people, or will he again get away from justice? Love how things all come together in the end!! This book will keep you turning the pages to find out what happens next!!

I received a complimentary copy of this book, was not required to leave a review, and the opinion expressed is my own.

In Beside the Dead, the action starts immediately. Harrison Troyer is a young Amish man forced by a corrupt sheriff to flee and cut off contact with everyone he knows. He changed his last name and now works for a private investigator in Alaska. Eden has been a captive as long as she remembers and finally gets the chance to try to flee. Samantha "Sam" Baker is about to become the acting sheriff in Evergreen Falls, Maine. Harrison's current case has him looking for a long-lost daughter last seen in Evergreen Falls. The main characters are likable and well-developed. The plot is fast-paced and captivating and has some great twists. It kept me reading until the very satisfying ending. Author Mary Alford's writing style is perfect for this high suspense story. There's enough detail to give a good feel of the setting without ever slowing the plot down. The dialogue flows well and feels natural for each character. I highly recommend this book to readers of clean romantic suspense. It's full of thrills and chills and of good and evil.
I received a complimentary copy and am sharing my opinion of this extremely well-written and engaging book.

Beside the Dead by Mary Alford is book #2 in The Among the Innocents series. I did not read the first book and I had no problem following this story. It was super suspenseful & you are drawn in right away as you read the prologue. During a major snowstorm in a small town in Maine, a young woman escapes the clutches of a monster who’s been holding her hostage since she can remember along with another woman. As they find her and search for his lair, they start to wonder if it’s connected to two cold cases involving two girls who went missing over 20 years ago. You will be immersed into this world where a snowstorm rages & people’s lives are at stake as they search for a killer while trying to protect the woman who escaped. You will not want to put this down. I know I couldn’t. I read late into the night. I can’t not wait to read the next book. I’m now reading book #1. It’s another winner just like this one. I was giving a copy, but all opinions are my very own.
