So Many Somethings

Rate this book
Fanfiction clashes with reality when an anonymous fic writer meets the real-life celebrity behind her stories ... who happens to secretly be her top reader, in a romantic comedy perfect for fans of Thank You For Listening and Mr. Wrong Number.

By day, Diana works as a line cook at her family’s French café in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, juggling brunch service and finicky customers. She's happy to help at the café, but it's financially in dire straits, and she's not sure how much longer she can help keep things going. By night, she escapes into the Sam Raymond fandom, penning smutty real-person fanfiction (RPF) about the dreamy rockstar-of-the-moment for thousands of readers. And those readers are eating it up more than usual after a vocal injury that's sidelined Sam's tour. One of Diana's most avid followers, the mysterious "S," has even sent her a series of flirtatious DMs on Tumblr.

When the real Sam Raymond shows up at the Diana's café for brunch, her carefully separated worlds collide (and she's gotta make the best goddamn lemon crème crêpes of her life). Despite her nerves, the crêpes are a hit, and Sam keeps coming back for more; soon, the two strike up an easy friendship over their shared taste in music and love of NYC.

But Sam has secrets of his own. He's finding it harder and harder to suppress his panic attacks, with setbacks slowing his vocal recovery and threatening a potential end to his singing career. The only comfort he finds is in interacting with a clever online fic writer in, embarrassingly, his own fandom. And then he meets Diana. As Sam isolates himself away from his normally chaotic life, he becomes intrigued by this cute chef and her big, boisterous family. He can't help but spend more time at the classic French bistro they call home.

As the writer and the rockstar grow closer, Diana must balance her connection with S and attraction to Sam— and her guilt in keeping up her pseudo-Sam-themed stories, which she knows is her best chance to get out of the kitchen and become a professional writer. Meanwhile, Sam is forced to confront the anxiety threatening to break him once and for all, or he risks losing both his connection with Diana and his career. Will this end in OTP or disaster?

“…Most don't get so fortunate and instead settle for connecting across oceans and time zones, knowing some of the closest relationships in their lives are subject to an internet connection.”

this was such a cute and cozy read 🥴 i’m all for a good slow burn, and the slow burn was SLOOOOOWW BURNING in this book (it was a little too slow though)

that said, there were a few things i didn’t enjoy:
1. the pop culture references. there were WAY TOO MANY of them 😫✋🏻😭
2. diana and sam flirting over text like little kids (they’re 21) 😭
3. diana still writing her fanfic about sam even after they became friends…
4. sam peeking at diana’s boobs almost every time he got the chance LMAO 🤦🏻‍♀️
5. the ending. it felt kinda rushed 🫤

despite these issues, i still had a great time reading this book and would definitely recommend it!!

thank you netgalley and 8th note press for providing me with an e-arc of this book in exchange for an honest review!!

I was really drawn to the premise of this book—a line cook secretly writing fanfiction, only to have the rockstar she’s been writing about walk into her café? That’s such a fun and unique setup! However, while the concept had so much potential, the execution didn’t fully work for me.

The pacing felt slow, and while I usually enjoy a good slow burn, this one dragged a bit too much. The in-person interactions between Diana and Sam were enjoyable, but their online dynamic lacked the chemistry I was hoping for. The flirting often felt juvenile, more like middle-school banter than the charged, swoon-worthy connection I wanted.

I also felt the romance was lacking overall. Since Diana’s emotional connection with S played such a big role in the story, I wish we had seen more of those interactions to really feel the weight of that reveal later on. Without that, some of the emotional beats didn’t hit as hard as they could have.

That said, if you love extremely slow-burn romances and a unique setup, this might be a great fit for you! While it wasn’t quite what I hoped for, I can see how others might enjoy it.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

If you like a good slow burn, this one might be for you, because it’s a sllooooowwww burn.

I loved the premise of this, but really felt like something was lacking. I think there should have been more show of the interactions between Diana and S, since the depth of her feelings for him was such a big deal at the end of the book, but we are really only showed a handful of their interactions and so never really get that deep foundation she refers to later.

This was cute and I really liked the MCs and I loved Diana’s huge family. I think my main issue with this one, is that it’s almost TOO realistic. I feel like a lot of us read romance to read things that are at least a little better than our every day lives, but this one feels so realistic in how it was handled that it kind of takes me out of romance feeling. Even the HEA was really only HFN because….
✨SPOILERS✨‼️‼️‼️

They don’t even get together until the literal epilogue and there were zero discussions on how they would move forward with their relationship, after there being so much angst about him going back to touring. This was so drawn out and our crops were not watered.

⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️Random notes from my read: CAN BE CONSIDERED SPOILERY⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️

* I’m confused. At the beginning of the story, she says her family owns multiple businesses, not just the cafe. Now they are “fighting for their survival” when just the cafe is doing poorly??
* Also, the cafe finance part wasn’t mentioned at all until around 60%. That’s wild
* I truly don’t understand why he won’t just tell her. Like he hasn’t ever stated any actual reason why he’s not telling her
* Her decision-making skills are very strange to me
* Weird bit in chapter 22 where it seems to switch between Sam and Diana’s POV in the same section. Couple sentences apart
* Yeah, this whole chapter seems to be a mixed POV and it’s throwing me off
* He’s making this so much worse by not telling her
* Why so much focus on staying the designer brands of literally every item of clothing anyone wears?
* I thought Coralie was moving to Greenwich?

The concept for this book was just so stinking adorable. I just maybe wasn’t the right audience for the way this book played out. This book has an incredibly slow burn romance. For me, it went past tantalizingly slow and all the way into frustration. Though, it was equal parts delightful and frustrating to know that Dianna and Sam were messaging each other when neither of them had realized it yet. I’m not sure if the tense changes were intentional or not, but those and the asides to the reader were another pain point for me. However, I loved the Happy Ever After our leading couple got. In fact, I would have loved to see a bit more of what happened after “and they lived happily ever after.”

Right off the bat, if you've ever been invested in celebrity fanfiction, you should read this book! It's a fun little read, albeit with a few flaws.

I found it was a bit hard to connect with the characters at the beginning, especially with the tumblr DMs on the opening page. If you can get past that, the story does get much better. I was invested in Sam's vocal rehabilitation. I liked the restaurant and all the food. Their in person interactions were cute and I am a sucker for a celebrity romance. But, their online relationship was so flat - and I say this as someone who has had great online loves and friendships. We're just not shown enough of how they interact with each other online. I didn't get why they would turn away an offline tangible relationship with someone whose name and story they knew for someone anonymous with the most generic flirts and texts. It made the big conflict feel immature and baffling.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an advance reader copy in exchange for this honest review.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC, in exchange for an honest review.

I found it difficult to connect with the characters throughout. The story itself was a cool idea and if you like celebrity fanfiction, you would likely enjoy that aspect. I just found the start a little boring to get into. There were too many pop-culture references, and the writing felt juvenile in parts.

This book is a SLOW burn. I like slow burns but this was too much in my opinion. The in person interactions were good but the online communication between the FMC & MMC fell flat to me, and the flirting felt young, middle-school style flirting.

It was a cute read but it fell flat to me for sure unfortunately. The cover and synopsis were so cute and I wish I liked this more than I did!

This is the first slow burn friends-to-lovers book I've read in a hot minute that D E L I V E R S on being slow burn. Chef's kiss (no pun intended).

The premise of this book grabbed my attention immediately - yes, I did spend far too much of my formative years on tumblr and consuming fanfiction. This is a slow starter and I did admittedly struggle to maintain interest in Diana's online interactions with "A" and "S". Their conversations felt very stilted and flat, and when so much of the conflict in the later half of the book is Diana's turmoil between "S" ghosting her and the guilt she feels about getting closer to Sam in the meantime I wasn't able to feel much sympathy because like. girl those conversations were DRY and you know nothing about him what are we mourning omg ????

The story picks up so much when Diana and Sam meet in real life and I lived and breathed for every time he turned up in the restaurant. I was so invested in his recovery and him being basically integrated into Diana's family was a relief because even I was worried about how much he was isolating himself from everyone in his own life. I found him such a likeable MMC which so rarely happens for me lmao

I liked Diana's large family and closeness she feels with them in theory, but there were just so many of them and whenever a name was dropped I'd lowkey struggle to remember who that was again. There are some plotholes surrounding her family that kind of broke my immersion; for instance, Diana and Giselle have inherited their apartment from their mother's aunt, but when the restaurant starts to go under their parents decide the only option is to sell the apartment. And not even to save the restaurant. They just give up on the restaurant it seems. They own other restaurants, and even though this one is the most significant to all of their lives they just. Let it go. It was a bit bizarre. There's a discussion around what they're all going to do now that their workplace is gone, and one of Diana's older sisters announces she and her husband are moving to Conneticut, which creates tension with that sister's twin, and then that's forgotten and she just starts working at another of her father's restaurants. There's also a moment after hating each other the entire book where it seems like Diana and Giselle squash their beef, only for Giselle to move back to Paris and Diana to be like "good riddance" when telling Sam. I still don't follow why they hated each other. Anyway, just silly little things like that, like the author was so focused on doing the romance aspect of the novel well that details outside of the romance fell to the wayside just a bit.

Even so, I had a good time with this! A lovely autumnal read, and a very promising debut! Would definitely read more from this author in future.

rating: 3.5/5

the book follows diana, who helps run her family's cafe, la vie en rose, and a fan-fiction writer of pop star sam raymonds. when the real sam shows up at la vie, diana's life flips upside down, but sam keeps coming back (for the food? or something else...) sam himself is recovering from a career setback and a throat surgery and slowly builds a relationship with diana, her family, and la vie, bonding with diana over food and nyc while dealing with the looming presence of his singing comeback.

i actually did not like the book at first due to it's various pop culture references that were hard to keep up with, and the seemingly huge family diana had that made all the names difficult to track. however, as i progressed with the book, i realized that the large family is central to diana's character and her love for working at la vie. the other side of her life, the one that indulges in tumblr fanfiction, is also central to her character and the hidden talent she relies on to express a part of herself that isn't otherwise conventional.

if you like a slow burn romance, this is definitely a good book, although i will have to admit, it was a lot slower than i would've liked. it takes quite a while from the beginning to diana and sam's meeting, with many details stacked in between. however, the development of sam and diana's relationship is probably one of my favorite parts of the novel.

finally, one thing i really liked about this book is that it's not your typical celebrity x local trope. sam was not portrayed as a popular figure for a majority of the book, so i felt that his relationship with diana felt a lot more intimate and personal. it's not one of those books where the local has no idea who the celebrity is, and neither does it feel like their relationship is centered around sam's popularity.

overall, i ended up liking this book a lot more than I did originally! it's a great read although it picks up slowly. the family dynamic in this book is everything!

thanks to netgalley for the arc!

With its New York autumn vibes meets a bit of 'You've Got Mail', this was a sweet, slow-burn celebrity/normie romance.

Diana and Sam were very sweet together, slowly forming a friendship while not realising they were also friends online as 'D' and 'S'. Both had a lot of insecurities and growth to do. At times I found them both frustrating (especially Sam for not telling Diana as soon as he realised who she was), but I had to remind myself they were both 21. Refreshingly, I liked Diana's reaction to finally realising who S is, and then being shocked that her reaction wasn't the opposite.

However, I think the pacing was off. It was so slow for things to come to ahead, waiting for Sam and Diana to come clean with each other. Then everything wrapped up in the epilogue with us being told rather than shown how both of them thought about the mistakes they made with each other. To me, epilogues supposed to be about AFTER the couple has gotten together and resolved their personal growth arcs. Otherwise it's just the final chapter. I would've preferred if we saw Diana working towards being a full-time author much earlier on given thats what she dreamed of doing. Some details that didn't make sense (which says this book needed more editing). Giselle and Diana inerhited their late aunt's flat, then the next sentence it says her pmum threatened to kick them out to sell the flat. Which is it? Also the cafe's financial situation. They own other cafes but why aren't they going under too? To me the cafe side plot should've been completely scrapped.

Having said that, I think this was a charming debut, and I would definitely read this author again.

This book is a cute fun read! It has dual POV, friends to lovers, slow burn. There was a lot I loved about this book but there were also some flaws and plot holes.

Diana is a chef at one of her families french cafes and Sam is a celebrity who just suffered a vocal injury and had to end his tour for rehabilitation. Diana was working at the cafe to help out her family but her secret dream is to become an author. She is a huge fan of Sam Raymond and when he walks into her cafe one day she couldn’t believe it. Especially since she was anonymously writing fan fics about him.

Sam is a celebrity who just suffered a vocal injury and is recovering at his new apartment in New York not far from the cafe where Diana is working and where she grew up. He found this cafe by chance one day and he never stopped coming back. Sam was struggling but he found comfort in the cafe with Diana’s amazing cooking and loving but overwhelming family.

This journey the two of them were on together was so fun to read and I loved seeing how sweet Sam was and all the things he did for Diana. The chevalier family is one I would love to be a part of or even just know, they were so supportive and loving no matter the issues that came up for them.

There were a few things in this book that felt a little drawn out and some that were rushed such as the ending. I wish we could’ve gotten a little more at the end that showed Sam and Diana on their new journey. Overall I loved this read and I would recommend giving it a try!

I got a chance to read this book through Netgalley. I want to thank the author & publisher for this opportunity.

I was shocked by how much I loved this book. I was a tumblr girl when I was younger, but never much of a fan fiction person. This made me a little unsure if I would like this book or if I would find it cringey. Right away my worries were eased because the writing is fantastic! I loved almost everything about this book, but especially the characters.

I fell in love with every single character. Maybe it’s because I come from a large French-Canadian family, but damn did I love the Chevaliers. The dynamic between them felt so magical. They all felt like real, tangible people and I appreciated it so much. Sam was such a likeable male lead. His dialogue and personality actually felt real. I was worried about extra cheesy interactions/dialogue from him but there was none of that!

The only thing that falls a little flat for me is the ending. This is a very slow burn. I loved the spicy scenes near the end, but I feel like it took away from the ending of the story a little. It made the last chunk of the book feel a little rushed and unsatisfying.

For Molly Dunn’s first novel she did an outstanding job! I have already started recommending this to my romance loving friends and will keep doing it until every reader I know has read it! Do yourself a favour and grab a copy of this one!

In this funny and charming new romance novel, readers follow line cook and fanfiction author Diana as she juggles her new Tumblr story and her family’s French cafe’s risky position. As her story grows more popular with her online fans -- including the mysterious superfan S -- Diana’s two lives collide when the real Sam Raymond shows up at the family’s cafe for brunch, putting additional pressure on her lemon creme crepes, but the crepes are a hit As Diana and Sam’s friendship grows, Sam’s secrets -- as well as his conversations with a brilliant new fanfiction writer -- start to bleed over into his friendship with Diana. Both keeping secrets and trying to separate their two selves and lives, Diana and Sam run the risk of losing everything as time passes. With two brilliantly complex characters alternating perspectives and living double lives, readers will love this brilliant new romcom for the tangible chemistry, the idyllic Upper West Side French bistro and setting, and the entertaining character development. Charming and heartwarming, their struggles are deeply relatable and incredibly written, while the emotional core of the novel is very strong and immersive. Detailed, vibrant, and exciting, romance readers will love this double-lives friends to lovers novel from Molly Dunn.

This is a slow burn romance that’s sweet and a great option for a fall read. I liked this overall, and the reading process of it was very enjoyable. You do have to have a lot of patience though, because it really is a slow burn.

There were a few things that affected my enjoyment of this book. I thought the pop culture references were heavy handed and immediately dated the book. I think this would be hard to read even a few years from now. I also felt… weird about Diana continuing to write hr fanfic even after they became friends. That’s… kind of weird. Fanfic is such a unique space, but a big part of it is imagining things in a separate world in the way you want. Doing that with a real person is already in a weird place for a lot of people, and then for her to continue to try to write a real person she knew in a fanfic feels a little disrespectful.

The flirting occasionally felt a little too young, and their emotional connection sometimes lacked a little bit. It’s disappointing that they don’t get together until the book is over. You don’t get to see their relationship grow even a little from there. The cafe part of the story also didn’t feel completely developed.

Overall, I enjoyed reading this a lot. I don’t think I’d read it again, but it hit that “read once for cozy vibes and had a good time” category in a nice way.

*Thank you to NetGalley and 8th Note Press for this eARC; the opinions are my own.*

Usually I require myself to hit at least the 10% mark before choosing not to finish a book. While I only made it to 7% before deciding that this one just wasn't for me, it will probably work for other readers. This book was offered to me (thank you, 8th Note Press, for the thoughtful gesture), but I doubt it's one I would have requested on my own.

What contributed to my DNF designation:

I'm not a fan of third-person present-tense narration. It feels awkward to me, but I was willing to push through anyway.

Mostly, though, I couldn't get on board with fanfic written about a "real" (in this book's world) person. Is this a real thing? If it is, I find it incredibly creepy that anyone would write fanfic--especially smutty fanfic--about a real person. Make up a fictional character based on someone real, for goodness sake! Within the first chapter, Diana came across as an over-obsessed super fan, possibly madly stalkerish. It just made me uncomfortable, and I can't imagine I would have felt any less so as the book progressed.

But that's me.

Lesson learned: Just because a book is handed to me doesn't mean I have to accept it.

3.5 🌟Thank you to Net Galley and Molly Dunn! I really did enjoy this book; if you’re a lover of slow burns, it is definitely for you! I loved how I could connect to Diana; the premise of her being a fan fiction writer is just so calling to millennials and Gen Z! If you love modern-day references like Taylor Swift and other artists, this is the one for you. I do have to say, I appreciated the familial relationships Diana had with her family, but I got very lost in keeping up with everyone and who they were 😔 I felt like the book could’ve done without some of the information about her family, but I still loved the bond. There were also a lot of plot holes in the restaurant's financial situation, but they owned many others. It was about memories, but it was made a huge deal and mentioned very late in the book. Also, NO PLANS ON THE RELATIONSHIP?! I wish the slow burn stopped 60% of the way through to see more of the relationship unfold! This was an adorable read, and a lot of the time, I was screaming at Sam just to TELL HER, iykyk, but the burn was worth it! It is an adorable read; thank you again, Molly, for letting me read this beautiful book 🤍✨

When writing fanfiction and your real-life celebrity muse, who happens to be a member of the fandom, lands in your family restaurant, what do you do?

This is a sweet story. Easy to read and the author should be complimented for not following the plot timing du jour.
This story rolls along allowing our FMC, Diana and MMC, Sam, to meet, to get to know each other and to be the friend they each need in that moment of their lives. The support Sam received through his return to the stage and Diana to the next chapter of her life were important messy, real experiences the author gave page time to. Nothing felt rushed. The friendship Diana and Sam developed was a lovely vehicle to carry their subtle romance. The extended family aspect was delightful and I could fully imagine the loving chaos around the family table in the restaurant kitchen. There is secret identity and misrepresentation to drive tension and the author has made the choices that best fit her characters.

With thanks to 8th Note Press, the author and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an eARC of this book.

🍂 “So Many Somethings" by Molly Dunn is a delightful read that exudes charm and warmth,🍁reminiscent of classic romantic comedies like "You've Got Mail" and "Notting Hill," while infusing its own unique flair. The slow-burn❤️‍🔥romance had me hooked, with the character of Sam radiating a Shawn Mendes-like charisma that added to the story’s appeal. I particularly appreciated the depth of Diana's character, especially her intricate family dynamics and her dual life as a talented chef and a secret writer, which added layers to her personality. Overall, I found the book to be a solid 4 stars and left me eager to explore more of Molly's creations in the future. 👩‍💻…❤️…🧑‍💻

So Many Somethings
By Molly Dunn

4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Tropes:
- mental health rep
- Hidden identities
- Friends to lovers

If you live laugh love slow burn this is the one for you. The tension? The angst? The longing? SO perfect. Friends to lovers with rocky roads between. This was a sweet easy read. I love the family dynamic & how realistic it was to be in a larger family. I loved the mental health rep for anxiety & how that can affect day to day life no matter who you are. Diana & Sam absolutely frustrated me at some points but it makes it real in a sense. I loved both characters individually & together, they deserve happiness after their last year or so of life being harder.

Thank you NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book!

This was definitely a 3.5⭐️ read! It was cute and sweet and it had some cozy fall vibes. It also had some hints of You've Got Mail. I really liked the concept of a romance between a fan fiction writer and the artist (it felt a little nostalgic to me and my own fandom phases haha). I did feel like it was a bit slow at some points, but then the ending was wrapped up way too quick. But I would still recommend this book to all my fellow romance lovers who are/have been in fandoms and like fan fiction!

P.S. All the food descriptions made me a little hungry, I should make some of the dishes and delicacies mentioned soon!

⭐️Dual POV
⭐️Slow burn
⭐️Rockstar/Fan Fic Writer Romance

I did not want this to end, I want more Diana & Sam!!

This is a 90’s rom com movie in a book, which is my favorite movie genre. Very You’ve Got Mail. New York is always a great romance backdrop and crepes, yes please!

I felt like I could picture La Vie En Rose, it was so perfectly written with so many small details. And the Chevalier family was a cast of very colorful characters, each one so fiercely different.

The friendship and romance between Diana and Sam was so sweet and spicy, anyone who’s dreamed of a rockstar romance growing up will love this book!! ♥️

I sat with this one for quite a bit. I really love a good slow burn, but this one was slow. I liked the plot in theory, but something just didn't click for me. I found it difficult to connect with the characters, which made it tough to push through and finish the book. With that said, I felt the book deserved a fair shot so I’m glad I stuck with it (even if it took a while). All in all, not my cup of tea but the Wattpad nostalgia it gave at times (iykyk!) was definitely a treat!

Book Rating: ⭐️ 3/5

This was an okay read for me. The premise was interesting, but at times, the story dragged, and I struggled to connect with some of the scenarios.

This is totally a me thing, but I think I’ve just moved past a certain stage in my reading where some aspects felt a bit unrealistic. I could see this being more popular with a younger audience, though! A lot of my hiccups came down to personal preference, which is why I’m giving it a three star rating.

That said, I know there are readers out there who would love this and rate it much higher. So if a fanfic author meeting her muse in real life sounds like your thing, definitely give it a try!

Thank you 8th note press for this copy. It initially was something I thought I might enjoy, but I unfortunately did not. I rated it 2.5 stars. This book was very confusing because our two main characters know each other in real life but also as online personas. Their online personas are referred to with initials which was confusing for the first half of the book, but also other online people are referred to with initials and we don’t know their real name and are lead to feel like we’ve missed characters. Their online personas amount of characters in this book was astounding. I couldn’t keep up with all of them. I could see where the author was going with this book but it was so disjointed and clunky that it never got to that feel good rom com book I was looking for.

This was a fun romance book!

The characters were absolutely likable and also relatable on some level! I like how they had their insecurities and weaknesses as well as their strengths. I like how we as readers new more than the characters and were able to see how they figured it all out on their own!

I enjoyed the plot aswell. Did I find the thought of Diana writing fanfiction about sam a bit weird once they started hanging out? Perhaps? But otherwise it was okay and I absolutely enjoyd it on so many levels!

Thank you netgalley for a late arc in exchange of my honest review.

Overall, I feel like I could not truly get into this book as much as I would have liked to. This was a very slow burn book, and while that is not a bad thing, I just feel like I couldn’t grasp onto the story. But that is not to say that it wasn’t good.

There were many parts of the book that left me with a sweet feeling. They actually talked about crepes so much I actually had to go and make them myself! 😆

This story would be great for anyone who loves a cute New York romance or just a sweet family story!

I want to thank NetGalley for allowing me to read and review this book!

This is a fun, entertaining read. Sam and Diana are interesting, relatable, intriguing, caring, strong, wounded, complex, entertaining characters. I enjoyed their romance and the path it took to get to their HEA. These two are fun to spend time with. I enjoyed the family and friends aspects of the story. The secondary characters added to the fabric of the story and my enjoyment. The story is easy to read and get into.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
