Living in Greece at the turn of the twentieth century, widow Minnie Harper struggles to find her place in a swiftly changing world. But when a local woman is murdered, her resolve is put to the test in a race to shed light on the truth . . .
Minnie Harper isn’t used to putting herself first. Not after she moved away from England only to be left raising two children alone on the Greek Island of Corfu following her husband’s unexpected death. But with her daughter begging to be sent to school abroad and her son grasping at his own independence, Minnie realizes she must prepare for the next stage of her life.
When famous mystery author Stephen Dorian settles into a neighboring villa to escape writer’s block and hidden scandals, she is intrigued at first by the handsome Londoner—until he proves to be nothing more than a boorish grump. Determined to avoid the man as much as possible, Minnie is shocked when he offers her a well-paid job as his typist. She isn’t in a position to turn down work, even from a man she has sworn to hate.
But before Minnie can fully regret her decision to take the job, she makes a horrifying discovery that changes everything. A young maid has been murdered, and local authorities aren’t moving fast enough to bring justice to the terrible crime. Unwilling to allow the death to fade into obscurity like the stories of so many other women deemed unworthy by society, Minnie launches an investigation of her own—and reluctantly accepts Stephen’s help. As she embarks on a dangerous search for answers that reveals another side of Corfu, unsettling questions take shape about her employer-turned-confidant and the culprit who just might do whatever it takes to strike again . . .
Emily Sullivan is an award-winning author of historical romance and mysteries set in the late Victorian period. Her books have received multiple starred reviews from trade journals including Publishers Weekly and Booklist, and have been praised in publications such as Entertainment Weekly, Buzzfeed, Parade, Self, and Bookpage.
She lives in New England with her family, where she enjoys reading about history and writing about rebellious women.
I read this one based on the pretty cover and because it is set in Corfu. When I discovered that it takes place in 1898 and is about the English expats living there I was doubly interested.
Minnie Harper and her husband moved there some years ago, but sadly he died leaving her with little money, two children and a dilapidated house. Minnie is obliged to accept paid work as a typist for the famous author who is currently living next door. When her friend's maid is found murdered she works with the author (who writes mysteries of course) to investigate.
This was a very enjoyable book. The historical setting is good, the characters well developed and the mystery intriguing. I predicted the wrong person as the murderer but I was close! There were several open ended topics in the story which indicated the possibility of a follow up. I hope so!
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
The setting, time period and characters were idyllic. This was a great first book in a new series. I’ll definitely be reading more as the series is written. I was surprised by whom the murderer was and relived. I enjoyed most of the interaction between, Minnie, the widow and Stephan, the author. The ending prepares us for the next in the series. Great narrator.
I was blessed with n audio ARC and the opinions expressed are my own. Highly recommend.
If you have a mystery, you need to drop more clues. Also, like nothing happened? I know it is supposed to be cozy, but I still need to be entertained.
This is NOT a romance. It did feature an older female widow with young children.
Everyone raved about the setting, but this could have taken place in a small village in England and I don’t think much would have changed. I also think much more could have done to make this more clearly a historical piece.
Perhaps cozy mysteries are not for me because I am clearly an outlier here.
Ahhh books like this are my catnip!! An interesting mystery with a heavy dose of unrequited Victorian longing?? PUT IT IN MY VEINS lol.
Reminded me a bit of Deanna Raybourn’s Lady Julia Grey series. Or the Harriet Gordon series by A.M. Stuart.
This historical mystery features Mrs. Harper, a young widow. She’s an English expat who lives on Corfu with her two children. First a handsome, enigmatic English author moves into the house next door to her. Then, the Greek maid of another English family is murdered, and Mrs. Harper and the brooding author get drawn into the investigation.
I sincerely hope it’s the first of many books in a series!
More formal review to come for Shelf Awareness soon.
4.5 🌟. I loved this for many reasons. I admit that I was originally drawn by the beautiful cover but the story itself was also very engaging. 1898 Corfu, widow Minnie Harper is busy raising two children and trying to make ends meet when she's hired by famous author Stephen Dorian as a typist. Minnie and Stephen team up when a young woman is found murdered and the local authorities don't seem to care about solving the crime. This is the first book in a new mystery series and I definitely am on board for the next book.
Wow, this book was a delightful surprise for me. This book is the first in a new historical cozy mystery series, I was not familiar with the author, I believe she has written some historical romance before, but this is a new endeavor. I strongly recommend Ms. Sullivan keep going. I was totally captived from the very beginning of the book. In early 1900, Corfu was a beautiful place with a good-sized English population. Our MC Minnie is the widow of an English diplomat with two growing children. She makes the aquientence of an English mystery writer, on Corfu to escape scandal and finish his book, at the home of one of her neighbors, welcome dinner, held in his honor. Since Minnie has some typing skills, another neighbor recommends that she help Stephen with his manuscript. The characters in this book are so well drawn and the setting so lovely that when a maid to one of the English families is murdered it is very jarring. When the local police take no interest in finding true justice, can Minnie and Stephen work together to find justice for the young victim? This was a wonderful story with a great mystery and compelling characters. While it comes to a very satisfying conclusion, we can see plenty of places to go in the future, and I can't wait. My thanks to #Netgally, #Kensingtonbooks, and the author for the opportunity to discover this new series. #ADeathonCorfu #EmilySullivan #bookreview #bookideas #retiredreader
Let me start off by saying that I LOVE Ms. Sullivan's historical romance novels. She writes amazingly detailed, swoon-worthy romances that I devour. That being said, I've only ever read a handful of cozy mysteries, and this is a historical one to boot. I'm not 100% sure of all of the traditional hallmarks of a historical mystery, so I'm going to do my best to review this one.
Minnie Harper, a widow with two children, lives on the island of Corfu in Greece at the turn of the 19th/20th century. The author does an excellent job with beautiful descriptions of this paradise, btw. (I just added Corfu to my bucket list.) I, personally, love this time period in historical books. The Edwardian era was a fascinating era in history, and the author excels at weaving in bits of historical information throughout the novel. One day, a famous (and scandalous) mystery author moves to Corfu to finish writing his recent novel--and he needs a typist to help him make his deadline. He hires Minnie for the job and one day after working with him, she stumbles upon the dead body of a servant that she knows works for a friend of hers. When the author, Stephen, realizes what has happened, he and Minnie set off to find the murderer and clear another man's name and get real justice for the victim.
Since I'm a romance reader mostly, it was hard for me to have the mystery take the front seat in this story when Stephen and Minnie so obviously have feelings for each other. Big ones. I just wanted to scream "Please hook up NOW so I can celebrate!" I am really rooting for these two. As for the mystery itself, it was ok. Nothing crazy or super-twisty. Also, I'm assuming because of the way the story ended that this will be a series? Fingers crossed because **SMALL SPOILERS** I need to know what happens with Stephen and Minnie. This novel didn't end on a cliffhanger, per se, but I definitely felt that stuff was not wrapped up at the end. Once again, take all of this with a grain of salt because I have no idea if this is the way these type of novels end.
Anyway, I think the two things shine about this novel: Sullivan's use of historical details and her ability to craft two people who are meant to be together and make it believable. (If you haven't read her historical romances, you should. She's a master at the genre, truly.) It was an enjoyable read and I'm very much hoping to see Minnie and Stephen in a second book!
**A big thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for a copy of this book to read and review for my own opinions!**
A Death on Corfu by Emily Sullivan is the first book in a new historical cozy mystery series. Looking forward to where this goes.
I like cozy mysteries and I like historical fiction…so it is nice to enjoy a book that blends the two together. There was a nice blend of a relaxing, getaway vibe, and the actual murder/mystery. A bit on the slower speed at times, but it is (I think) the first book, so a bit of character and location setting was needed. Definitely room for growth and potential.
It was also nice to have a diff location to be used, Corfu at the beginning of the 20th century. Looking forward to where this goes.
4/5 stars
Thank you NG and Kensington Publishing | Kensington Cozies for this wonderful arc and in return I am submitting my unbiased and voluntary review and opinion.
I am posting this review to my GR and Bookbub accounts immediately and will post it to my Amazon, Instagram, and B&N accounts upon publication on 4/29/25.
A charming and perfectly-plotted mystery with a setting that can’t miss! This was my first novel by Emily Sullivan and I adored her plucky protagonist and ensemble cast of island villagers. For historical mystery and romance fans, Minnie Harper and company are sure to become fast favorites.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Minnie Harper moved to Greece with her husband and two children, after he retired from his job with the foreign service. Not long after, he dies unexpectedly, leaving her to raise her children alone. With her children growing up, she decides it’s time for the next stage of her life. When well-known mystery writer, Stephen Dorian, moves into the villa next door, she’s intrigued by the handsome author but quickly finds him to be a boorish grump. But when he offers her a job to be his typist, she can’t turn it down, even if it means working side by side next to a man she hates.
Before she has a chance to regret her choice, she discovers the death of a young maid. With the authorities dragging their feet to solve the case, Minnie takes it upon herself to investigate the young woman’s murder. As she searches for answers, she uncovers dangerous secrets that could change everything.
When I saw this on Netgalley, I immediately requested it. Who doesn’t love a historical mystery? For fans of Emily Sullivan, know going in that this isn’t a romance, and it seems Ms. Sullivan is branching out to other genres.
The story starts out at a sedate pace, much like life on an island, things move slowly and lulls you into a sense of security. The slow pace does go on for a bit longer than I wished for, but once Minnie finds the body of the dead young maid, Daphne, the pace begins to speed up. Not all as it seems, and when Minnie notices an expensive necklace on Daphne’s body, she begins to suspect her murderer is part of her social circles. The only person who takes her seriously is none other than Stephen. Together they begin to uncover the clues left behind by the murder.
Minnie was kind of bland as a character. The story is told entirely from her point of view, but we don’t really get glimpses of her personality. She feels quite distant and removed from the story, so it was hard to relate to her. Stephen is your typical brooding, grumpy historical hero. There was nothing about either character that made them truly stand out. It’s uncharacteristic of Ms. Sullivan as she often creates unique, relatable characters in her novels. I wasn’t able to make a connection with either character. Perhaps this could’ve been a result of the story being told through first POV. The murderer is fairly easy to guess. This could be in part because there aren’t many plausible suspects or red herrings.
In spite of that, I did enjoy the story. The ending was left a bit open ended, and I wonder if this will be part of a series. This novel will appeal to audiences interested in historical mystery novels.
I have mixed feelings on this. I picked it up because I really enjoyed previous books I've read by Sullivan, but this didn't quite capture my attention the same way. The mystery itself was fairly predictable, in a way that I kept grumbling at the characters for not realizing.
That said, this wasn't a bad book, even if had hoped for a bit more. I'm intrigued by the potential for future books in the series based on the ending, so I'm sure I'll check them out when they become available.
A very cozy and enjoyable historical mystery! I loved the setting on Corfu and the sleuthing. I felt bad the ending slightly fell apart akin to “don’t go to bed upset” that could’ve easily been avoided or resolved.
rating: ★★★★ released: 29 April 2025 genre: historical mystery pov: first person MC: Minnie Harper audio narrated by Siobhan Waring
It is the Victorian Age close to the turn of the century when we meet the widow, Minnie Harper who lives on Corfu in Lemon Grove House with her two children, Tommy and Cleo. She is happy with her solitary life and supplements her income left by her late husband, Oliver by typing. Her latest employer is none other than Stephen Dorian, author of the famous Inspector Dumond.
Emily Sullivan quickly captures the feel of Corfu and entices me with her description of the Lemon Grove House:
Though the house may have been slowly falling apart, our little patch of land remained as lush and vibrant as the day we arrived. Graceful cypress trees cocooned the property, while a large, twisting grapevine provided much-needed shade over the terrace, where we ate most of our meals. Bougainvillea, marigolds, roses, and more wildflowers than I could ever identify blossomed in every available spot, perfuming the air with a rich, heady scent, while clusters of pomegranate, fig, and, naturally, lemon trees were in various stages of fruiting.
If I wasn't ready to visit there yet she brings the flavors and aromas to life with her talk of Greek cooking:
"The tavern owner’s wife had packed far too much food for us: small triangles of papery phyllo stuffed with spinach and feta, a loaf of butter-soft bread, an assortment of ripe fruits, a large hunk of hard cheese, and a wedge of something wrapped in paper.
“It’s sykomaida,” I said once I unwrapped it. “This is quite good. It’s a fig pie.”
But it isn't just the setting that made me love this first in the Minnie Harper series, it was the careful development of the children's character and relationship which they had with their mother. And then there is the slow development of the friendship between Minnie and Stephen Dorian, which begins in a somewhat unfriendly manner.
While the mystery is not terribly difficult it is interesting and shines a light on some issues.
I thought this was an excellent read and nearly gave it 5 stars. I hope I do not have to wait too long for the next in the series and wonder where Minnie and her children will be at that point.
Thank you to Kensington Books for the free ARC via NetGalley! All opinions are my own.
A Death on Corfu is a historical, romantic cozy mystery set on the Greek island of - you guessed it, Corfu! - in 1898. It follows Minnie Harper, a British widow and mother of two who promised her late husband that she would stay in Corfu to raise their family. As the book begins, a mysterious writer named Mr. Dorian has moved into a home nearby, piquing Minnie's curiosity.
I enjoyed how Minnie and Mr. Dorian's initial interactions had a very Pride & Prejudice vibe. And later in the book there was a direct reference, which was fun! Despite getting off to a somewhat rough start Minnie ends up working for Mr. Dorian, typing up the handwritten manuscript of the next book in his series of mystery books. After the titular death occurs, Minnie and Mr. Dorian join forces to investigate when they notice the local police force's lackluster efforts. I'll leave my synopsis there to avoid spoilers!
As a cozy mystery, historical fiction, and romance reader, this book was right up my alley. The setting was charming, the plot was interesting, and I loved the simmering romantic tension between Minnie and Mr. Dorian. I also found the ending interesting and satisfying, leaving off with just enough of a cliffhanger to remind the reader that this is the first book in a new series. I also enjoyed how Minnie and Mr. Dorian's discussions about the structure of a mystery novel were a bit meta. It felt like a bit of a wink from the author.
If you enjoy the genres I listed and the plot interests you, I highly recommend picking this one up! It came out last week, on April 29, so it's available now.
An utterly charming and mostly unexpected treat, best described as the love child of ‘The Durrells’, ‘Pride and Prejudice’, and an add-your-own-favorite cozy mystery.
Set on the idyllic island of Corfu in the year 1898, the story is told by Minnie Harper, a smart and restrained thirty-three year old recent widow with two children: the wannabe bug-lover and avid naturalist, Tommy, aged eight; and fourteen year old Chloe, a teen who manages to be both sharp and sweet, around the edges.
The island is buzzing when the handsome writer Stephen Dorian comes to town, leaving Minnie however, somewhat less than impressed when she runs headlong into what appears to be both Darcy-ish arrogance and icy aloofness. That first impression may or may not be about to change, however, as Minnie finds herself temporarily in Mr Dorian’s employ, engaged as the typist on his latest and newly evolving murder mystery.
Without giving the plot away, (no spoilers here), trouble is afoot when a body is discovered nearby in gruesome circumstances. With a less than helpful local police force, as Minnie and Stephen find themselves drawn into the role of amateur crime solvers, it remains to be seen how the clues will stack up. And who, amongst the colorful medley of local Greek and English residents, now falling into the suspect category, will actually prove to be a villainous murderer.
Highly recommended, this read would be a welcome addition to any beach, vacation, or cozy afternoon sit-down. A terrific mystery with an equally terrific cast of characters, the setting in both time and place is yet another well-crafted addition to the overall success of this story. With an ending that pleases, and also teases, suffice it to say, this is one reader who is thrilled to discover this as the start of a new series.
Author, Emily Sullivan‘s foray into cozy historical mysteries is an overwhelming success in my opinion! Her first book in her new Minnie Harper mystery series, A Death on Corfu, combines a small town, mystery storyline with the quirky and fun vibes of PBS’s The Durrells in Corfu. (if you never watch the show – I highly recommend!)
In the series, mini Harper, a widow going on five years, an opportunity to up the manuscript for a visiting author on the aisle of Corfu shakes up her quiet life. Everything seems pretty standard as she works with mystery writer, Stephen Dorian, that is until they stumble upon a dead body, not that far from his rental… Minnie wants to see justice for the local woman who’s been murdered and Stephen can’t resist a mystery so they team up together to look deeper into this case and find themselves tangled up in a bigger mystery than they anticipated!
I enjoyed the mystery. They kept this book moving along, but I also really loved the character development of Minnie Harper coming to terms with her widowhood after five long years and rediscovering who she is and what she wants to do with herself and her family to move them out of the shadow of her husband‘s passing. And of course, since Emily Sullivan started off with historical romance, you know there’s some romantic tension between Minnie and Step! This one looks like it’s going to be one of those relationships that pushes and poles as more mysteries are solved in the series goes on, but I am eagerly anticipating seeing these two back together again in another adventure!
Thanks to Kensington Press for the e-book review copy.
1898. Minnie Harper is a 33-year-old widowed mother of two, living on Corfu. In the four years since her husband's death, she's taken on odd jobs including as a typist. She's largely allowed herself to fade into the background, throwing her life into caring for her children and not seeking much of a social life. When Stephen Dorian, a handsome divorced mystery novelist moves in next door, she doesn't quite know what to make of him or the rumors that follow him, but he offers her good pay to type his manuscripts and she agrees. When a dead body turns up nearby, Minnie and Stephen are unsatisfied with the police investigation and take matters into their own hands.
I love Emily Sullivan's historical romances, so I was bound to love her historical mystery debut as well. This was fantastic. It's everything I want from a mystery: fast-paced with intrigue, an excellent setting, a dash of romance, and dead bodies. Where this shines for me is Sullivan's character work and ease of prose, a carryover from her romances. A Death on Corfu is the setup for a new series, and you can feel the arc for these new characters building already, and I'm eager for the next book in the series already!
Thank you to Kensington for an eARC for review! A Death on Corfu is out 4/29/25.
I want to thank Netgalley and the author for gifting me the the audio version. I just have to say I absolutely loved this novel so much! This has got to be the best novel I have read in a long time. There was no cringy sex scenes, no cussing (just one part) and I loved how the author wrote the book. It was in the style of old classics from the turn of the century. The book was perfect length and didn't lag in any areas. Very witty writing in parts and I loved all the characters! I was fascinated with the plot and could not wait to find out who did it....and the reason behind the murder wasn't something cheesy or over the top. It was great! If you love a good old fashion Miss. Marple type murder mystery you will love this one! I would for sure read from this author again. I was so excited to see this will be part of a series! I cannot wait. Highly recommend! A MUST READ for the summer!
P.s. I loved the narrator, she did all the time period and characters beautifully.
I enjoyed the tone and premise of this one, and the mystery itself is well-structured and satisfying.
I tend to prefer this style of mystery when it’s heavy on atmosphere and sense of place, and this one unfortunately misses the mark on those components. I was excited to see Corfu as the setting, having greatly enjoyed visiting there, but I didn’t get much specific to the island at all here.
Essentially, from the descriptive information we get, this could have been anywhere in Greece that has a coastline, or really anywhere on the Mediterranean. When exactly this is taking place is also a bit of a mystery, which furthers the fuzziness of it in terms of properly rendering setting.
I enjoyed the mystery itself enough to read another should the series continue, but I’d like to see a lot more attention paid to atmospheric detail.

I really liked both Minnie & Stephen & look forward to how things develop! I loved the setting of Corfu & enjoyed how the author set the scene. There were twists & turns & I didn’t guess who the villain was, which is always a plus I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own
Ooh my I loved this book. I was immediately transported by the description of the island of Corfu and can understand why the MC does not want to leave the island (though some surprises are in store regarding that). The characters were charming and fascinating and worked so well together. Seeing how Mimi took care of her kids and supported whatever they wanted and needed warmed my heart. And then her venture into first typing for and then sleuthing with her new neighbor (despite his surly demeanor and the salacious gossip surrounding him) was fascinating. I fell for both of them and their banter was perfect. There was a surprising amount of spark and longing in this book, even against the mysterious and dangerous landscape. I was SHOCKED by the twists and turns and the many bombshells at the ending had my jaw dropped. The writing had the perfect balance and I already cannot wait for more.
Audiobook note: I listened to this audiobook and it was fabulous. The narrator had the perfect smart, savvy, soothing and determined tone to perfectly represent our interesting and multifaceted protagonists.
Thanks to the publisher for the ARC; my thoughts and review are my own.
Minnie Harper is a widow living on Corfu in Greece when a mystery novelist comes to live next door. He offers her a job transcribing his latest novel and she is (big time) down. Unfortunately, after a quarrel, Minnie and Steven find themselves in their own cozy mystery. A girl has been murdered and the unlikely duo team up to try to find the motive and culprit of the murder.
This was bold underline italicized COZY. Low key Bridgerton meets Harriet the Spy, but a cute little historical fiction read. I think I also was dazzled by the title/theme because I am down for a Greece setting <3
Thank you NetGalley and Kensington Publishing for the Audiobook ARC ✨
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the early copy to read and review. All thoughts are my own responses and/or reactions.
Minnie Harper is the widow of a British foreign service agent living on Corfu. That alone lets you know this is going to be an intriguing read. (Also, her son is absolutely hilarious). When she begins working for a mystery writer with a mysterious (read: scandalous) reputation, she soon finds herself involved in a real life murder mystery. I loved this read - the setting, the descriptions - especially of the food! The multiple layers of mystery playing out, and the ending ... oh the intrigue. What did Oliver do? What will Minnie do? Definitely a fun start to what promises to be a fabulous series.
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for a honest review.
A Death on Corfu is the first installment in a new mystery series and was an enjoyable story, with likeable characters and nice settings. The mystery wasn't very complex, though, and I easily guessed it from the start. There is no romance either, at least not in this book, but maybe in the next ones.
All in all, it was a nice start with room for improvement in the following books.
This is a delightfully cozy mystery with a nice side of (very) slow burn romance. I enjoyed the setting and also the mystery. Good characters, compelling storytelling, all in all a solid 4/4 star book
First book I've read by Emily Sullivan, and it was great! The story was creative and original, and it was well written, well paced, entertaining, and hard to put down. Overall, very well worth the time to read.
A widow raising her family on Corfu is drawn into a murder mystery of a young maid and while investigating the tragedy, discovers more about her life and family. I liked it and would read another adventure featuring this heroine.
