A Game of Veils

Play for a husband. Don't fall for his enemies...

As the second-born princess of a kingdom conquered by a brutal empire, I'm nothing but a pawn. Little do I expect my parents to arrange my marriage to the most powerful bachelor of the son of the emperor himself.

But when I arrive at the imperial palace, I discover I must compete for my betrothed—vying with the court noblewomen in a series of humiliating trials to prove our devotion.

Those who fail will be executed.

For the sake of my country, I'll risk my life to win my husband—this sadistic man who applauds the torment and flaunts his lovers.

Unfortunately, my scheming competitors aren't my only enemies. The emperor's royal wards—princes of other conquered domains, fostered to ensure their families' obedience—lurk in the shadows.

They see me as a traitor, prostrating myself for our tyrants' approval. The perfect target for their bottled rage. They'll do whatever they can to distract me, unsettle me... ruin me.

I can't help being drawn in by their seductive wiles. Behind their simmering fury, their pain and broken hopes call to me.

They might be just the allies I need to save my life and my kingdom. But only if I can conquer these wicked men before I lose my heart.

*A Game of Veils is the first in a new fantasy romance series with a sizzling enemies-to-lovers romance, smoldering morally grey men, and a determined heroine they'll regret underestimating.*

A why choose fantasy, with deadly trials, tyrannical leaders and grumpy royals you eventually can’t help but love…Lorenzo is my fave though!!

The magic system is so unique and had me gasping at the cost some paid for their gift. Every time I think I had all their gifts figured out Eva surprised us with more!

Our FMC Aurelia thought she was leaving her country to marry her betrothed only to find out she’d be competing for his hand in marriage through deadly trials. I’m not going to lie I thought Aurelia was just some dainty princess that was going to get through these trials on pure luck. Boy oh boy did she shock me, the ending will have you second guessing everything you thought you knew about her!

Marclinus I don’t think he’ll ever be redeemable, the way I’d be celibate if he was the last man on earth, I absolutely loathed him the entire book!

Our 3 grumpy royals really stole the show, after being forced to become foster sons at the age of 7 to the emperor in order to maintain control over their countries they had good reason to be wary of Aurelia, and boy did they really put her through the wringer! I loved seeing their relationships blossom with Aurelia and cannot wait for the second book!

Thank you so much to Ava Chase and The Nerd fam for allowing me to read this pre-release in exchange for my honest review.

⭐️⭐️This started off promising but was so boring. I didn’t feel the sparks with any of the love interests. There were too many trials yet nothing really happened.

OH?!? This ATE. Beginning to end, i was immersed in this world. From Aurelia being on her way to meet her betrothed, to the deadly trials, then her princes?! I loved that this was why choose yet the fantasy aspect was SOO good. Then the ending?!? OMG, I need answers ASAP! Then don’t even get me started on the fact that it was enemies to lovers! But also, her enemies hate her betrothed🤭 This was literally so good, i can’t wait for book two!!

Fun but average for me. I didn't feel a connection or really even understand the motivations of the men until about halfway. The trails didn't really feel like trials and were very samsies throughout for me. This is a slower political forward story, and I just kept wanting more.

Ahhhhh the ending, I need book 2 like yesterday!

If you are a fan of Fantasy Romance with Arranged Marriage, Deadly Trials, Enemies to Lovers, Secretly Badass FMC, Why Choose and so much more, then this book is for you!

In A Game of Veils, we meet Princess Aurelia who has been sent to be married to Prince Marclinus but when Aurelia arrives she is in for quite a shock when Emperor Tarquin and Marclinus announce that she will be competing against other ladies for Marclinus’s hand in marriage in a series of trials, failure ends in execution.

There are also some princes that are not so happy with her arrival, Princes Lorenzo, Raul, Bastien and Neven - Emperor Tarquins foster sons who were taken to keep their realms in line, see her as just another woman that wants the throne for herself and are going to make sure that doesn’t happen by any means necessary.

Aurelia’s resilience is admirable and there is so much to her than meets the eye, she isn’t vying for his hand because she truly wants to marry Marclinus, she wants to impact change in the entire kingdom. These princes see her as a traitor and when she realizes they have the wrong idea about her she makes it her mission to prove them wrong.

The trials and the princes trying to trip her up does not make it easy for her. Will Aurelia win the trials? Will she be able to win the other princes over?

Ugh I really wanted to absolutely love this. It had all the elements but I think the execution just wasn't what I was hoping for. While the villian in this is a complete Joffrey (Game of thrones) and the heroes were deliciously different, the plot meandering too much for me leaving me feeling a little bored throughout. I admittedly love a fast paced plot and the constant introspection hindered plot progress for me. Also, the group scene was a tad...forgettable. I also just didn't feel the love in the romance, everyone changed their minds and professed their love quite quickly. However, I loved the ending and I am so curious to see what happens next. I really hope the villian gets what's coming to him in the next one.

To her shock, she’s subjected to brutal and humiliating trials and sabotage as soon as she steps foot into the enemy’s court. I am basking in my #WhyChoose era and have found a new obsession with A Game of Veils. I inhaled this book and fell in love with Aurelia and each of the MMCs. This FMC is definitely a secret bad@ss- she may not wield weapons but her heart is fierce and her compassion gives her strength. While Aurelia appears refined, graceful, and reverent, she is also calculating, brilliant, and steadfast in her duty and purpose.

Aurelia sees things as they are and what they can be. Truly believing she can enact meaningful change for her conquered kingdom, can her spirit remain unbroken in a cruel court full of vicious competitors?

The foster princes scheme for her downfall, but the harder they try, the harder they must fight their urges and pull to her. The intensity of their hatred spurs different passions and subsequent deep understanding. Watching the tension and relationships play out between Aurelia and each MMC was exquisitely intoxicating.

With shrouded deceptions, deadly consequences, and an irresistibly steamy why choose romance, A Game of Veils will have you utterly captivated. The ending had me absolutely floored and I am desperate to find out what happens next!

I loved being back in this world and experiencing this story through this audiobook. The narrators beautifully captured Aurelia’s grace and determination and the foster princes’ distrust, conflicting emotions, and undeniable draw towards Aurelia.

The simmering tension and courtly intrigue was portrayed so well and each reveal and surprise was wonderfully crafted. I cannot wait to listen to the next books in this series!

A Game of Veils is the first book in a new why-choose series set in the same universe as the Rites of Possession series.

A few months ago, I raved about Thief of Silver and Souls, and I was immediately intrigued by the idea of a new series in the same universe, but with an entirely new cast of characters.

What to expect & Tropes:
∘ New Adult Fantasy Romance
∘ Reverse-Harem — medium (3-4)
∘ Intriguing Worldbuilding
∘ Royalty
∘ Deadly Marriage Trials
∘ Secretly Badass Heroine
∘ Morally Grey Men
∘ Disability Rep
∘ Enemies to Lovers
∘ Slowburn
∘ Arranged Marriage

I would like to start by thanking the author for sharing their book with me as an ARC ❤️. It's important to me to be transparent and let readers know that my review is honest and unbiased.

Thoughts
Aurelia is supposed to marry the cruel crown prince, completing the first step in her plan to bring about change for the good of the kingdom. So, imagine her surprise when she arrives and learns she must prove herself by competing with other women vying for the prince's hand... and winning. Or should I say, surviving?

The story had me hooked from the start, and it didn’t take long for me to be taken with our FMC. As for the love interests, they won me over slowly but surely.

I remain fascinated by the worldbuilding and lore. Full of intrigue—both political and otherwise—intense moments, and even some spice, I would definitely recommend this book if you're a fan of any of the tropes listed above.

I always enjoy reading books from Eva, and I absolutely loved reading this one! The worldbuilding is amazing, interesting magic system and wonderfully written characters. You'll love them, hate them, root for them, and more

"𝘐’𝘥 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘰𝘧 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘢 𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘣𝘦 𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥, 𝘪𝘯 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘦𝘸 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘐 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘧𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩. 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵, 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘴𝘬 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘪𝘵.”

I love the diversity in these characters, Aurelia is such a strong character! Even whitin the most harrowing circumstances, she'll try her hardest to persevere. Of course, I can't forget about the princes! You'll have to read this book to find out why I love them 🙌🏻

Aurelia is the embodiment of ”Who’s afraid of lil’ old me? YOU SHOULD BE”

The Imperial Heir gave off major Joffrey Baratheon (GoT) vibes in all the sadistic ways possible. The whole play for his hands gave room for an eerie and sinister setting that our FMC navigated with so much grace and wits! But between the cruelty, insanity and horrifyingly deadly trials there is room for a strong build up of romance where the spice is SPICY and all attention goes to her. With this reverse harem you’re rooting for multiple suitors at once, all diverse with their own POV’s.

Aurelia is crafty, determined and oh my THAT ENDING? I’ll be reading the sequel for sure!

A perfect read if you’re a fan of enemies-to-lovers, reverse harem, royal court scheming and cruel deadly trails.

I loved this book. Why choose? Yes please! One of my favorite tropes! Spicy? Yes! Also love that! Fantasy romance! Dangerous trials?! Yes! The female MMC had dignity, and rose above the mean girl nonsense!! I loved it!

This is an enthralling Fantasy Romance you wont want to put down. The Romance is a slow burn, and why choose. The book is spicy. Not just spicy scenes, but spicy language, and innuendoes. The book moved at a quick pace following Aurelia as she arrives in Dariu for what she thought was an arranged marriage. When she arrives things take a quick turn where she will be fighting for her marriage spot. This is a game of life or death, all for the chance to be a future empress. This book has action, deceit, lust, and heart break woven into the story. The story remains unpredictable and exciting from beginning to end.

daaaang, that was a fun ride

If you're looking for a fast-paced read that grips you from the first page, this delivers in spades. This story combines political intrigue, emotional tension, and romance that kept me glued to the pages. Aurelia, promised a marriage, is forced instead to vie for the hand of the sadistic imperial prince in a brutal competition where the stakes are life or death. It's high drama from the get-go, and it doesn’t slow down.

Let's start with what really worked for me: the dynamic between Aurelia and the foster brothers—royal wards of the empire who are technically her enemies but become her reluctant allies—is the very best part. Their connections feels raw and real, filled with both animosity and attraction. I loved seeing the bonds that form, and the way they slowly warm to Aurelia, who’s just trying to survive in this twisted court. The complexity of their relationship is engaging, adding layers of tension and vulnerability that kept me invested in every interaction. Aurelia herself is smart and resourceful, navigating this treacherous world while trying to protect not only her life but also the lives of those around her. It's a "why choose" romance done right (for me)—with actual stakes, solid character development, and a plot that is just as important as the love story.

The plot is packed with twists and surprises, especially the ending that completely took me by surprise. The trials are intense and incredibly cruel, with real stakes that make you hold your breath in anticipation. And while I could have done without the "women versus women" drama—especially when they all had plenty of reasons to band together in the face of such clear danger—I still found myself deeply engrossed. The pettiness felt forced and I did wish for a more nuanced portrayal of conflict between the women, as the constant cattiness was a bit exhausting. Again, if there was some discussion of it being due to fear, that's one thing - but it doesn't go in that direction.

There are a whole lot of plot holes here. So big you can drive a truck through - but that's fine because it's so fun. I didn't read this critically and I had an amazing time. There are moments that don't quite make sense, and yes, some character motivations are a little shaky. But the sheer fun of it all, combined with the genuine emotional moments, more than make up for the imperfections.

Overall, this is an addictive read that offers plenty of entertainment for fans of fantasy romance with a dark edge. It may not be perfect, but it’s exactly the kind of book you devour in one sitting. Suspend disbelief, dive in, and enjoy the ride!

Thank you The Nerd Fam and Ink Spark Press for the gifted ebook! This review is based on a complimentary pre-released copy and it is voluntary. All opinions are my own.

Overall Enjoyment: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice: 🌶️🌶️
World Building: 🌎🌎🌎🌎

“Loyalty. Faith. I have plenty of them, just not for the man with the knives.”

A Game of Veils is full of complex characters you’ll either love or hate, horrifically creative trials that’ll have you on the edge of your seat and absolutely full of the best steamy tension. It’s safe to say I was hooked from the first page.

“I’m more than a pawn. I shouldn’t have had to shoulder this burden… but no one else could have done it.”

Eva Chase has created such interesting characters, our FMC Aurelia is strong, capable and so intelligent you’ll be looking for hidden clues in everything she does. It left me guessing and gasping throughout! Aurelia’s character really is extra special, her ability to remain compassionate in the face of such cruelty. Her wit and drive makes her formidable and this is only the beginning of her story. She really is so well written, and I can’t wait to see where her journey leads next.

“I know what I have to do. Not because anyone ordered me to, not because of any divine message, but because I believe I can finally heal the immense wound that’s plagued these realms for centuries.”

This is an enemies to lovers full of initiation misunderstands and judgements. I loved how these characters started to overcome all that was set against them, to find a little healing together. The princes still have a long journey as head of them, they have been beaten down and discouraged from any rebellion but Aurelia is pushing them to do better simply by how she carries herself.

“She’s brought a lot of rightness into our lives too. Started to mend the cracks that’d formed inside each of us. We’d better be able to do the same for her.”

That ending! I was trying to turn the page desperate for more! It was just so good and such a moment that had been building throughout the whole story. I loved it, and I can’t wait for book two!

After finishing the author's previous series, I was really looking forward to this one. The concept sounded exciting and the little glimpse of the princes we got in the epilogue promised a lot of awesomeness. So, when BookSirens notified me that I could request a copy, I did so right away. And, when I noticed that the paperback was available early I also made sure to order my copy as soon as I could. This week it was time to start reading.

I have to admit that this book didn't grab me as much as I had hoped. I think that's firstly because the concept of women competing to the death with each other for the hand of a man, no matter how clearly it is that this man is evil, has to be done really well to work. In this case the book was mostly filled with the kind of scenes I read countless times already. And of course, while other contestants are willing to go very far, our heroine stays kind and offers help to even her biggest bully.

I also had a slight issue with the pace and the focus. Don't get me wrong, there were certainly parts I enjoyed, and the trials, and how brutal and gruesome they were, were really thrilling, but it felt like the flow in this book was off. Due to there actually being two plot lines, the one of the trials and the one where our heroine falls in love with the other princes, it feels like neither fully shines. It felt like they were each constantly interrupted by the author.

And since the trial takes up so much page count, rightly so, it also feels like the romance isn't really developed well. The princes start hating our heroine, then they start warming up to her and then they are all of a sudden sharing a bed. It feels like there are steps missing. Especially towards the end there was a scene that exactly proved what I already felt. These characters don't know each other very well yet. I hope they will get more time to grow emotionally closer in the next book.

The last chapter of this book was very promising, so I can't wait to read what's coming next!

2.5 I am not sure if I just am not a fan of Eva Chase or what but I don't think I've ever been able to finish her books. Spoilers.

Here is the problem, I read a blurb on Eva's books and I think "hmm that sounds good! I definitely want to read that". Then I get to 30 percent and I ask myself why I tried. The plots have all the intrigue and promise but somewhere along the way we just get bogged down.

This book is all trials and mundane conversations. I can't pinpoint a conversation between characters that made me feel any spark of emotion or caring for the character. It just slows on and on. Then all of a sudden she is sleeping with the other princes? I mean I know I signed up for a romance and I get that sometimes we jump the gun on why they are together, but with a book this long full of just boring everyday life you couldn'tay more ground work for us to care about them together? Or for it to make sense aside from they are all prisoners in a horrible land.

I feel bad with how much I disliked this book, but here we are. I think if you like her style you will like this book but I just need to stay away from this one.

I am obsessed! Eva Chase has done it again and completely sucked me in. I need the next book ASAP, and this one hasn't even been released yet. 😅😍 The FMC is strong, capable, and intelligent, who faces obstacle after obstacle and proves we can overcome anything we set our mind to. This book is an enemies-to-lovers with multiple love interests and perfect tension. As with all Eva books, this is plot heavy with a side of fire 🔥 scenes. After that ending, I am absolutely feral for the next book in this series. Eva Chase ruins me in the best way.

I received an advanced copy. All thoughts are honest and voluntary.

It was wonderful to be back in Eva Chase's writing and the same world as the Rites of Possession series. There's something about Eva Chase's writing style, plotting, and world-building that gets better and better with every book of hers I read.

A Game of Veils was no different. I didn't realize that it was set in the same world as the Rites of Possession, so you can imagine my pleasant surprise. This continues to be one of my favourite magic systems - the balance within it is integrated, but there is also a level of mystery. Having to sacrifice a part of yourself to your chosen godlen in exchange for your requested ability eliminates the chance for one person to be completely overpowered. If a person is searching for unlimited power, there is the assumption that they would be too vain to sacrifice such a large part of their own body in exchange. And if the godlen feels that you are not sacrificing enough and the scales are balanced, they take your sacrifice and leave you powerless. Genius.

Once again, I enjoyed the pacing of this book and found it to be consistent throughout, with increases and decreases only improving your reading experience instead of taking away from it. Little breadcrumbs were laid for the reader, to tease of plot twists and secrets yet to be revealed. When the big twist at the end occurred, while I did see it coming, I found it extremely satisfying.

It was nice to be with an FMC that has a background of herbology, potions, elixirs and teas, instead of blades and arrows and combat. She was quietly determined, cunning in court intrigue and excellent manipulation of situations under pressure.

I did feel as though the relationship development was slightly under-cooked, having had the majority of the book focused on the trials. I would have appreciated more development and insight when the MMCs switched from "we're out to get her" to "we will worship her above all else". I felt it happened quite quickly, especially with their own unspoken motives still being alluded to.

I also struggled with the fact that these trials were unannounced and absolutely brutal, and not one single person tried to interfere or defend these women. These are the most eligible women in court, and they are being killed off, and not a single person had an issue with it? Not a single person even cried out when they were being killed? Not a single man spoke up and said "if you don't want her, I'll take her"? It certainly added to the tension but required a good dose of suspension of disbelief.

Overall, if you enjoyed the Rites of Possession series, I'd highly recommend this book.

Thank you to BookSirens and Eva Chase for a digital advanced reader copy. All opinions are my own and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

ARC review (thank you so much The Nerd Fam and Eva Chase):
Rounding to 4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from 3.75

For me, A Game of Veils by Eva Chase is a gripping introduction to her writing that pulled me in from the very first page. Following a second-born princess navigating a treacherous court to compete for her betrothed, the stakes are incredibly high, and the tension is palpable.

Chase’s magic system is intriguing and cleverly constructed, balancing power with sacrifice in a way that feels fresh. I appreciated the protagonist's background in herbology and potions, which provided a unique perspective on strength—showcasing intelligence and resourcefulness instead of relying solely on combat skills.

The pacing kept me engaged, with well-timed moments of tension during the trials and quieter scenes that allowed for character development. Chase drops hints throughout the story that build anticipation for the twists, and while I had an inkling of what was coming, the reveal still felt satisfying.

However, I found the relationship development a bit rushed. The transition from rivals to potential allies happened rather quickly, and I would have loved to see more exploration of the characters' motivations and emotions to make their connections feel more authentic.

Additionally, the brutal nature of the trials raised some concerns for me. It was hard to believe that no one intervened during such horrific events, which added to the tension but required a hefty suspension of disbelief.

Overall, I found this to be a captivating read that blends romance, intrigue, and a touch of magic, making it a great choice for fans of the genre. I’m eager to dive into more of Eva Chase’s work.

Thank you to Eva Chase and Nerd Fam for allowing me to read an Advanced Copy of this book!

A Game of Veils is like a cross between the Hunger Games and the Bachelor in the best and bloodiest way. The world building is simple to follow which makes for a fast moving plot. There is a unique magic system. The characters are well developed and I am excited to dive into them deeper in the next book!

There is explicit spice and language. For a why choose, I was actually surprised it wasn't spicier but the spice that is include is *chef's kiss*

I liked the premise here a lot…Aurelia is betrothed to the prince but, when she arrives, discovers she has to compete with other women for the position as future queen. There is a series of competitions and the loser is murdered so this is a high stakes situation. The prince is also not a nice guy so it kind of sucks that you have to either compete to marry him or be killed…

There are 4 princes from other kingdoms that are staying at the palace as collateral. And 3 of them are hot so you can guess what happens.

This was a decent read. I enjoyed it but I don’t know if I’m invested enough to read the rest of the series.

Wow, this book is simply amazing. So much so that I actually found it hard to put down. The tension bleeds from the pages and had me eagerly turning them to see what happens next. I was not expecting that ending, I can't wait for book two to see what happens next.

This is a why choose romance with deadly trials, and I was bored. I shouldn't be bored. I was so excited for this book because it was a combination of so many things that I love, but this book just really missed the mark for me. I really wanted to love this book and I tried so hard and powered through taking 2 weeks to get through this (normally it would take me 2-3 days for a book of this length).

This book jumps right into the action. In doing so I had a hard time connecting to any of these characters. The world building is very lacking in this book as well. Everything is written in a tell instead of show manner and I just found a lot unbelievable. Apparently all the kingdoms hate the Emperor, but also all of the Kingdoms want their daughters married off to the Emperor's son? There was no build up. This left me not believing any character's motivations. So much didn't make sense, and don't even get me started on the completely unexplained magic system where you completely forget there even is a magic system until it is suddenly needed.

This was my first book I've read by this author and I am think she just isn't for me. The end of this book was exciting and I want to know what happens, but I'll probably just look up spoilers later.

I'm all for bully romances but the reasons have to actually make sense. In here the guys hate her immediately.... because she's gotten to live her life and not been captive like they've been? Because they think if she becomes Empress she'll take from their countries? Like, isn't that a risk with any of the women? But apparently nope their hatred is just for her and is enough to sabotage her. It makes no sense to me.
Two of the romances felt like they switched on a dime, and Aurelia felt pretty flat to me as a character. Not sure I'll continue with the series.

A Game of Veils is a fantasy why choose romance, with light world-building but oh-so-intricate court politics. The fantasy side is light, consisting of powers dedicated to certain gods.

Aurelia is such a strong yet soft main character. Soft as her beliefs and nature are tender and caring. Strong as she will put everything on the line to achieve her goals, morals, and safety be damned.

The plot caught me so off guard! Marriage trials to become the wife of her promised husband. Twisty and sadistic, challenges upon challenges reveal a scary imagination from the empire’s heir. He was such a good villain. You could not make me like him with a gun to my head.

And now, for my babies, the Powerpuff girl version of male love interests: the three foster princes. All were well-written as they were very individualistic in their actions, personalities, and powers. I’ll say, they weren’t the smartest boys starting but they came around pretty quickly. I can only guess how they’ll act in the rest of the series.

And the final couple of paragraphs??? MISS AURELIA YOU GO GIRL. But also RIP cause I don’t see how this will be good for you in the long run.

I can’t wait to get into book 2!!
