I didn't realize this was book 2 when I started it, but it can easily be read as a stand-alone. I had low expectations for this book and maybe that's why I was able to enjoy it as much as I did. Sure, there were a few cringe moments, and a lot more kissing than I prefer, but I found myself getting really invested in the story and characters. I might even go back and read book 1 later.

This is the second book in Deeanne Gist's Trouble series. This book was thoroughly delightful with a heroine who was way ahead of her time as the leader of a velocipede (aka early bicycle) group in Corsicana Texas. She loved to fish, shoot guns, and ride her bike; but at 34 she wasn't interested in marriage due to a previous bad experience. But when Tony Bryant Morgan comes to town, Essie Spreckelmeyers' life turned upside down and inside out.

The humor was great, the romance played in the background, and the Essie's high jinx was front and center. Enjoyable read that kept me laughing from start to finish. I also enjoyed the setting of Corsicana as it is one of my husband and my favorite towns and a frequent stop when we lived in Texas for their famous Collins Street Bakery in business since 1896 and known for its amazing fruitcakes!

I must say, this novel and the one that has come before it have been the only two books by Deeanne Gist that I have been disappointed in. I had not realized that the first novel was even one of hers until I read this one. I did enjoy the second one a lot better than the first one, and the first one was not terrible, just not what I have come to expect from Ms. Gist.

The story line follows a matron who is out to save her own world, thank you very much, she does not need or want the help of any man. This sentence alone was a complete contradiction of the first novel, which made this novel funny in every sense of the word. Following the life of this heroine is a journey that many can take an appreciate for the honesty that is portrayed by the tales that are told. None of us our perfect, and Ms. Gist highlights that fact in these two novels while also showing us how redeeming God's love is.

My second foray into the world of Christian historical fiction romance was as fun as the first. I read this book in a day and was thoroughly entertained.

Set in Texas during the oil boom, when bicycles are new and exciting and women who wear bloomers are still considered slightly scandalous, this book follows Essie Sprecklemeyer, the daughter of an wealthy oil baron who believes she is destined to become an old maid. In comes Tony Morgan, who has been disinherited after his competing oil baron father dies, to fall madly in love with her.

I didn't realize until I finished this book that is was actually a sequel. And, I didn't really care. Overall, the book was somewhat predictable, but very fun.

The city of my birth, Beaumont, TX. It was nice to read about the oil industry. I knew so many facets from the museums in Sour Lake & Beaumont. So, it was neat to read about it. This was a cute read, albeit a bit long and drawn out; the Texas way! It was nice to get this one off my TBR list. A pleasant read!

I read this over the course of 3 days. It was really sweet. This is a book I had been asking the Lord to bring to me for a long time. I obtained this through the author as a donation for a charity function I am involved in every year. It was raffled off as a door prize and I won!! I gave it to my mother in law as a Christmas present. My mother in law liked this very much and she gave it to me to read before she donates it to her church library. I didn’t really know what to expect from a “Christian” romance novel. I thought it would be boring. I was so wrong! Everyone’s faith in the Lord is peppered throughout the novel and just a part of their personality just like mine. Doesn’t mean the characters are without sin. The main character is so charming. Reminds me of Anne of Green Gables. She’s so different and strong yet can be so vulnerable.

Esther (Essie) is the main character who helps her father run an oil business. It’s hilarious to read how derricks were just part of the landscape back then and the movement of using rotary tools from the cable tools. Really interesting. The Baker brothers make an appearance and give a demonstration of their product. Really cool!!
The heart of the story is Essie’s bicycle club and her romance with Tony Bryant Morgan. Very sweet story. Everything you’d expect from a typical romance novel and more.

In the first 100 pages of this story, we see the heroine, Essie Spreckelmeyer, win a national fashion contest, incite a riot, successfully run Texas's 2nd largest oil company, found and take charge of a ladies bicycle organization, teach classes on how to properly shoot guns and play soccer (not at the same time, thank heavens), She's saved the life of a young girl bit by a rattlesnake and cooked up an award winning dinner. She's Wonder Woman!!! In fact the only thing keeping her from total perfection is a hidden secret from long ago - one which has shaped her very life but when uncovered is brushed over so lightly, we are never allowed to even understand the circumstances. IF those two things don't annoy you to distraction, this book is a lively, fun, enjoyable romp.

So I was getting to a point in the book where the plot was really wrapping up, and there was really only one (big) thing left to have happen... and there were still like 100 pages left, so I'm thinking, "Ummm... what on earth?" And then it was like, BAM! HOLY PLOT TWIST, BATMAN! I was NOT expecting that!

It was AWESOME! It was slow at work, so I was reading (in the back, fortunately—not up front with all the library patrons...) and all of a sudden I was like, "HOLY COW! This is AWESOME! I LOVE a great plot twist!!"

But overall, I loved:

* Seeing Essie finally get the guy at 34-years-old :)
* How happy Essie was BEFORE Tony came along, with her bicycle club and stuff
* The hero, Tony... SO WONDERFUL!
* How well-matched Essie and Tony seemed to be
* Mrs. Lockhart and her crazy romance novels
* The awesome plot twist!

Yep. I thought the book was SOLID. I think this is my favorite of all of Deeanne's books so far. I'm looking forward to reading A Bride in the Bargain, which is the only one of hers I haven't read yet. Oh, psych! Her newest one, Maid to Match just came out 3 weeks ago... ;) Gotta add that to my TBR...

After reading Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers, I decided to try out a genre I had previously avoided at all cost: Christian romance. My book searching on Amazon led me to Deanne Gist, and Deep in the Heart of Trouble seemed like a promising first try.

I enjoyed the setting very much. As a petroleum engineering student, I liked reading about the oil industry in a historical, obviously well-reasearched, context. I also liked the protagonist, Tony Bryant Morgan (even if I might have a quibble about the name Tony... which seems more suited to a New York Italian than to the son of a Texas oil baron).

The plot held my attention, and the characters were very pleasant. I didn't realize until afterwards that this book was in fact a sequel, but that didn't stop me from enjoying Deep in the Heart of Trouble.

I admired the fact that Gist did not let her characters sink into a constant state of melodrama. Much of the plot concerns misunderstandings and the revelation of hidden identity. It was a relief to encounter characters who did not do stupid, brash things, but sat down and calmly considered a new piece of information without letting emotions dictate their actions.

Some things didn't sit too well with me. Gist seemed to be throwing together too many things. I read in an interview that while she had intended the oil history--particularly the development of rotary drilling and roller cone bits from the "dark days" of cable-tool drilling--that the bicycle club took over. It was pretty apparent that this was the case. Gist should have either added more of the oil patch in the latter half of the book, or emphasized the bicycle club earlier on.

I was surprised by how little Gist tied Christian elements into the novel. I almost felt like the original story was written, and then the editor had to tag on bits of prayer and thoughts about trusting in God at the very end, simply to appeal to the Christian fiction market.

All in all, the story wasn't anything too special. I didn't connect with the characters very well, even though they were all admirable and--for the most part--people you'd like to be friends with. I'm not sure I'll be attempting another Gish novel in the near future.

Energetic spinster Essie Spreckelmeyer is back, but this time, she's got her head on straight. After making the hugest mistake of her life, she's not about to succumb to needing another man. She and the Lord are doing just fine on their own, thank you very much.

As his father's last will and testament is read Tony Morgan finds he's been abruptly and cruelly disinherited from his portion in the family lavish oil industry. As he sets out to find his own way in the oil business, he never expect to run smack into the most challenging task of all--earning Essie's love.

More subdued than it's prequel, "Courting Trouble", "Deep in the Heart of Trouble" is still spunky and full of fascinating characters--just what I've come to expect and love from Deeanne Gist.

Since I found "Courting Trouble" to have an unsettling ending, I was glad to read the conclusion to Essie's story and feel deeply satisfied.

I am going to be harsh because this novel was written by one of my favorite authors and this book was a let-down!~ Okay....

-The characters: They did not click for me. I found their attributes strong and believable, but the chemistry was not. Agh.
-The plot...was good at first, but then all these twists and turns and another 150 pages to the end I was like.."What is going on?!" Another agh.
-Basically the book was hobbling along once those two cons were concrete and the final shot that killed it was the extra length that did not need to be there.

No recommendations for this book and I am not going to put it on my "like" list for this author. (Tears) I do like some of her other books though.

This was a great sequel to "Courting Trouble". I highly encourage you to read that book first in order to truly get to know Essie Spreckelmeyer.

Essie is an outspoken, independent young lady who owns her own bicycle business and is content with being single. Along comes Tony Morgan, newly hired at Spreckelmeyer's oil company, who wants to regain his name and his fortune. He is not interested in the blond and bossy Essie....yet.

There will be a lot of twists and turns along the way for these two, but in the end, they will discover and cherish the love they will find in each other. It was quite a ride, but well worth the time. You will learn a lot about the oil business, the bicycles and bloomers era for women, and enjoy every minute.

I almost decided to donate this book. I had finished most of the book, merely 50-60 pages remained. I admit to frustration at the all too predictable narrative and the baffling change in Essie's character. Essie in this book changed considerably from the first book almost to the point beyond the suspension of disbelief. However, when I picked the book back up this evening to finish, I slowed down and rather enjoyed the remainder of the bood despite its predictability. Classic literature this is not. A fun, easy read that avoids the lowest of terrible literature? This hits the spot. This book, barely, survives round two of the purge from my personal collection.

Starting this one, I didn't realize it was a sequel to Courting Trouble. I appreciated this book a TON more. I think it rates up there with the Bride Most Begrudging one and the Bride in the Bargain. I think the appeal of these books for me was the actual history that so much of it was based on and around. It was truly interesting to find out all these things about a time I know so little about.

Anyway in the end - fun books. Good author. Not all were my favorite, but again - they only took me a day or two to devour.

If you are in need of a "fluff" book this one will do nicely. Essie Spreckelmeyer is a headstrong, very individualistic woman who is on the forefront of new things....the bicycle. Enter Tony Morgan, disinherited by his father, and trying to disguise his identity. The two are at odds from the start. As the tale develops you know they will get together, but the twists and turns in the book expose lots of mysteries and include the sometimes comical Velocipede Club of the town. All in all a relaxing romp.

Anthony Bryant Morgan was a son to Blake Morgan who owned Morgan’s Oil. The passing of his father had left him disowned from the will and had everything in his older stepbrothers name Darius. Tony left town and wanted to earn his way into the business so he went to an another town home to Speckelmeyer Oil Company but changed his name to Tony Bryant. He was hired but Essie ( the daughter ) didn’t take too kindly to him at first. Tony tried to improve the company but Essie wasn’t taking any part of it from Tony. Essie fired him right away and her father told her to rehire him herself. Essie went and found him playing checkers with Harley the town orphan who had been adopted. Essie plays a round with him and on their way home Harley screams for help from the woods. One of his friends was bitten by a snake while hunting for them and Essie sucked the poison out and road her to the doctor. Tony was taken aback by her urgency and knowing what to do in such a panic state. Tony is rehired and promoted fast within the company. He soon starts to have feelings for Essie and wishes to court her asking her father but he said the decision was up to her. Essie was also the owner of a bicycle club in town and did a lot of work with it. She was training a man who worked in the field but he was hurt on sight so Tony took his place in the competition. Tony trained everyday with Essie getting alot of one on one time with her. Soon he simply asked her if he could court her and she was shocked and eventually said yes. Tony’s identity finally gets out and Essie was nervous that he was only with her for her fathers company but Tony denied that was the case for the courtship. He asks shortly after if she would marry him which she says yes. There is word that Morgan oil is also putting a racer in and soon the race is here. Harley over heard that Darius was planning on sabotaging the race so he could win the prize. During the race Tony was trapped in between bikers but broke free at the last second however he came up short. After the race he found Darius and punched him knocking him down pretty good. Tony was away for hours after and Essie could not find him anywhere until past midnight when she returned home. He was waiting for her on her porch steps and came in for a bit before leaving to pick her up for church the next day. In the morning Tony came over but was struck with news that his step brother had been killed in his hotel room with his knife. They take Tony into custody but everyone believes he is innocent but there is no proof otherwise. The deputy Howard has tried his hand at Essie but finds new information from a guy named Adam that they were intimate in the past. Howard blackmails her into trying to go out with him on a “midnight stroll” or he will tell her secret to the town. Essie comes clean with Tony about her past and he is very upset and she leaves his ring in the cellular. Days pass before they see each other again and Essie comes clean to her uncle the sherif who fires Howard immediately. Tony and Essie make up and she takes the ring back, meanwhile, all the women at the club are trying to find out who killed Darius. A week later they piece the puzzle together finding out it was Flinch ( tony’s cousin ) who had killed Darius with arson in his cigarette then with Tony’s knife framing him so that he would be next in line to inherit Morgan’s Oil. Hours after finding out this information a mob comes to the jailhouse demanding that Tony be hanged today and takes him to the hanging tree. However, everyone in town comes to save Tony and all is revealed about Flinch. The mob goes away and Tony is free but they wait to get married in order to prepare and get things squared away for Essie’s departure. Years later they have a son and Essie wants to start a club teaching women how to drive cars….. {I liked the pace of this book and it was a nice story and not everything I thought was going to happen happened. the scenes were PG which was good but the ending just really didn’t do it for me. It felt like it was wrapped up really quickly without any details. Wish there was another chapter or just something in-between the jump at the end from honeymoon to baby.}

This was a fun book to read this summer. It was interesting to see the personalities of Essie and Tony develop as they met, fell in love and married through many twist and turns of their lives. Essie was a woman who was able to see what the role of a woman would be in the future. She was able to encourage other women to also see what might be possible for them. When we first meet her, she has already formed her bicycle club for women, she slides down banisters, she wears bloomers, she like to fish and hunt frogs, she can shoot and is co-owner with her father in a large oil company in Texas. All of this is at the very end of the 1890's. On the other hand she can and does behave as the the daughter of a judge. She is used to doing things her own way and most people love her, both men and women and even children, not just tolerate her. Now enter Tony, who has just been cut out of his father's will and disowned by it as well. He too is well liked, he is faithful , kind and a hard worker. Everything was given to his older half-brother who is 100% the opposite of Tony. His father was the sole owner of the largest oil company in Texas. Alone and broke, Tony goes to the town where Essie is, meets with her father, and under an assumed name, get hired on at the very bottom of the workers for the Sullivan Oil Company, which is what he wants. WE don't know at this point the father recognizes him, but doesn't say anything. Tony proves himself on the job, and soon his co workers are supportive him. Essie and Tony are thrown together, which Essie hates, but over time, things change and they begin to "court" as was the fashion at that itme. Due to an accident, the man that Essie is training for a big bicycle race, is unable to continue, so Tony offers to be the rider. At first the animosity between them shows in the training she does with Tony. Skip forward, the two are now engaged, the big race is that day, and the older brother who is so jealous of Tony, he pays some of the other riders to "box him in" so that he can't win the race. Tony loses and a bad fight between Tony and his brother occurs, Tony leaves to cool down and later that night the bother is found dead in his hotel room. Guess who is charged with murder, Tony, of course, Again through many twist and turns, over a few days, the women of the town fix up his cell, bring him food and they try to solve the murder, knowing that Tony did not do it. Essie breaks the engagement which crushes Tony, the town becomes divided and a lynch mob is formed. They get him out of the jail, but Essie had gathered the troops, both men and women, to stop the lynching. Just as the mob is ready to string him up, his friend and Essie ride up and try to stop it, but with the rope around his neck and the crown shouting, "hang him", over one hundred people on horse round up and circle the mob, the succeed in getting Tony down and the women have discovered the read killer, which is Tony's cousin, who is arrested and taken to jail. The story ends with Tony returning home with his six month old son in his arms and finds Essie in the parlor with a group of women forming an automobile club and who will be teaching the women to drive. Tony goes to his office in the home, tells Essie she shouldn't do that , because all the men in town will give him a bad time and Essie says, too bad as she going to do it anyway. A very fun book to read.

I'm putting the same review for all Gist's books that I've read.

Read this a decade ago when I was practicing a puritanical religion. I call these the "cheesy christian cowboy romance" novels and if that is your thing, this will be. I absolutely DEVOURED all of Gist's books when I was in that phase. Like the book version of a hallmark holiday romance - so with that in mind, they aren't bad at being that, at having humor and some (light) feminist themes and more than a hallmark film would have, some VERY interesting historical info. This author put research into all her work.

CW: Incredibly het and mono normative, per uszh with romance, but with a hefty dose of typical evangelical "romance" like white saviorism, men being celebrated for doing literally anything because being "not actively horrible" is akin to being the best, etc.

Recommended for: I dont at all mean to put this book down. The author was going for a thing and within that framework, she nailed it. Just that my tastes, beliefs, and frameworks have changed. So I guess - if you like hallmark holiday romance?

(I recently read another of her books just to troll myself and I WAS SUFFICIENTLY TROLLED because I'm telling you, I've read all Gists's books that were out at the time at least twice. Bless it.)

Deep in the Heart of Trouble is the second book in Essie Spreckelmeyer’s journey—the one where she finally finds her happily ever after. Watching her fall in love with Tony Bryant Morgan was an absolute delight, and I especially enjoyed his endearing friendship with Mrs. Lockhart and their shared love for romance novels.

What made this book stand out was Essie herself—a heroine way ahead of her time. As the leader of a velocipede (early bicycle) group in Corsicana, Texas, she is fiercely independent, preferring fishing, shooting, and riding over the idea of marriage, especially after a painful past experience. But when Tony arrives, her life is turned upside down in the best way.

This story had everything—humor, adventure, romance, and a heroine full of spunk and determination. The romance was sweet and slow-building, with Essie’s hijinks taking center stage and keeping me laughing from start to finish. It was refreshing to see a romance featuring an older heroine (six years older than the hero!) and how perfectly matched they were.

Rated: 4.0/5.0—With its charming setting, witty dialogue, and heartwarming romance, this book was a thoroughly enjoyable read. If you love strong female leads, historical romance, and lighthearted humor, you won’t want to miss Essie’s story!

I liked this book a lot better than most of the romances I read. Almost all the others are predictable from start finish and it doesn't leave much room for gasp inducing plot twists, but this one had murder, lies, and secrets!
I do have to admit that the fact that she was six years older than him bothered me so much. I'm not at all saying a girl cannot be older than a guy in a relationship, but six years? In all honesty it grossed me out a little. All I could imagine after learning she was so much older was this large, greying haired lady and a physically fit, handsome, young man. I obviously know she was an attractive and skinny woman, I just couldn't get past it for a little while. After a bit I got past it and once I did I couldn't help but root for the two of them.
I was, though, all about Essie being all up in anything she wanted to be in. I love that she didn't take no for an answer just because she was a woman. She wasn't afraid to be herself, speak out in a time when woman were meant to be seen and not heard, and just all around do whatever the eff she wanted. I was low-key loving her.
For being a romance it was a fantastic book and I would would definitely recommend to anyone!

Essie is spunky, a natural leader, but a little blind in the business sense, though she runs a large company with her father, Judge Sprekelmeyer. Called a "spinster" at 34 years old, she has no idea how attractive and interesting she is. As she longs for a good friend to share time with, some one to get advice from or confide in, she never suspects that that good friend will turn out to be a man, certainly never expecting one of her employees to be that special friend.

Tony has had his share of family problems, not the least of which is being disinherited by his father. He worries about his mother and sister, but has no choice but to strike out on his own to find work. Knowing a great deal about the oil industry, his father's business, he is happy to work for Sprekelmeyer's oil company so that he can start at the bottom and work his way up. His worth becomes apparent to Judge Sprekelmeyer very soon, but learning to work for a woman is very challenging for Tony.

I enjoyed readying about the beginning of women riding bicycles and the training involved in bicycle racing. A little bit of history that was very interesting and added much to the story of these two great characters.
