Finding Deep and Wide: Stop Settling for the Life You Have and Live the One Jesus Died to Give You

Rate this book
Along comes a book daring us not to settle for anything less than what the Bible promises. We’re meant to live in such ongoing satisfaction in Jesus and transformation by Jesus that others are drawn to Him through us—and all without joining a convent, hauling our sleeping bags to church, or barricading ourselves in the bathroom with our Bibles and prayer journals. The truth is, we can invest in all those religious activities and still be God-starved refugees going through the motions, unless we learn how to trust Jesus to do in us what God asks of us. I QUIT gives us permission to stop trying to please God and learn how to live in a pilgrim’s delicious irony—being satisfied while hungering for more.

I fell in love with storytelling as a child when my paternal grandmother regaled us with stories of what it was like to come to Louisiana from the hills of Appalachia and set up house in a tent with a dirt floor. On the other side of the family tree, my paternal grandfather, a people loving preacher, was known for using humor to draw his listeners to Jesus. It's safe to say the two of them marked me. Whether in my books, speaking before audiences, or dropping a segment on The Story Table podcast I created, I love nothing more than helping hungry hearts feast on Jesus through humor and storytelling. ~Shellie

Shellie Rushing Tomlinson lives in Lake Providence, Louisiana with her husband, Phil. They have two happily married kids, six grandchildren, and one neurotic lab named Hank. There's a story there...

I recently attended Girlfriend Weekend, the Pulpwood Queens Book Club annual gathering. This year's event included a vintage fashion show & I was asked to model a vintage dress (vintage clothes are tiny y'all!). As I'm half-dressed and laughing my head off with several other women, I stop mid-sentence and ask one of the ladies "are you Shellie?" She confirmed that she was in fact author Shellie Rushing Tomlinson. I was starstruck as I was on the launch team in 2014 for Shellie's book "Heart Wide Open" & I was honored to be asked to join her launch team for "Finding Deep & Wide: Stop Settling for the Life You Have and Live the One Jesus Died to Give You." Isn't that an amazing title!?

Over the last year & a half, I have committed to getting up earlier than my family to have time to focus on my devotionals & work to pray more intently. I yearn to feel a close connection to God; however, sometimes I struggle to focus. I know I'm not alone as Shellie has written a whole book dedicated to helping us find a deep & wide connection with God.

Shellie is raw and honest saying she spent too many years of her Christian life feeling like God was with her while doing something considered holy, but the rest of the time He was shouting distance away. Can’t we all relate? Shellie breaks down the scriptures in an easy-to-understand way showing us that through Jesus we have access to God in every moment of our lives. She helps readers see that we don’t have to be on a visitation schedule with God - we can love with Him and in Him 24/7 with a deep and wide relationship.

Shellie has an amazing talent for breaking the ice with her terrific sense of humor that segues into God’s word and how it applies to our everyday lives. Reading this book is like sitting down with you Southern best friend (she is from Louisiana y’all) while she shares her testimony in a genuine way that opens your heart up to a closer relationship with the Lord. This book is not hard-to-read theology, but pure love poured from God through Shellie for us to utilize in our journeys.

I’m sure so many of us need to hear this - God is with us in ALL moments. We don’t have to wait for quiet time and seclusion. God joins us in the thick of life. Talk about good news! Shellie teaches us about the forever favor we have with God through Jesus so we will be “less prone to settle for status quo twenty-first century Christianity and the more courage we’ll have to reach for the deep and wide life.” I pray you will give this book a chance and let it work on your heart as it has mine.

Shellie Tomlinson is a Funny woman. Funny with a capital “F”, funny. She cracks me up to the point where - you know that saying “laughed til my face hurt”- that’s Shellie.

I not only laugh at her, I trust Shellie Tomlinson. She’s authentic. What you see and what you read from her is real. No dramatic license is ever necessary because Shellie’s path to finding Jesus has enough drama of its own. And it’s a walk she has invited us on because while the journey has been full of interesting twists and turns where she has ended up - well - it’s the best ever ending. It’s like one of my family's favorite movie titles: it’s a Never Ending Story. She shows us, with Jesus, the story gets better and better.

Shellie has the skill to take the Truth and make it seem so - true - and so entertaining. In her quest for Jesus, yes, THAT Jesus who, she believed in, yet, she confesses, she didn’t really know. if you know her books and her talks, you know that Shellie is the master of side-splitting stories. I’ve watched, up close, Shellie’s amazing journey to Jesus. In Finding Deep and Wide, as I read it I knew this book was different. Her “Heart Wide Open” book was a confessional of sorts but this is an all out, full-steam ahead public news release.

I spent more solemn moments with Shellie’s truth-telling than I would have thought I could or would. Through it, she lifted my spirit as much as the corners of my mouth.
In this book, cover to cover, Shellie tells human stories. Yes, they are humorous and they are also real, raw, flawed human stories.
And that’s a good thing for us.

Shellie has an unusual gift. She takes raw truth and makes it funny. The “laughing is better than crying“ funny. Finding Deep and Wide is no light fare though. I believe it’s her most important book and message yet.
It’s very personal. She is startlingly honest. Shellie is brave but does not put on her brave face for this wade into deeper waters. I know how much she cried writing it.

So settle in. You will love the spiritual ride of Finding Deep and Wide. Read it with a pen and highlighter because there are phrases and passages you will want to mark and re-read. And like me, you may write yourself a note in the margins.

When I do, these become my favorite books. “Finding Deep and Wide, Stop Settling for the Life You Have and Live the One Jesus Died to Give You” by Shellie Rushing Tomlinson is a new favorite on my list.
Now Mrs. Tomlinson is on two of my lists:
Favorite authors
Favorite books
She will be on yours too when you read this newest one of hers.
Be ready though.
You may laugh until you cry.
And you may cry, until you laugh.
That’s Shellie for you.

Here is one passage I highlighted. And have re-read. And noted.
”Remember my uncomfortable confession about wanting to hold onto the life He was offering with one hand—if I could retain some measure of me where I could pursue my own agenda with the other? I can still do that. Today. The author writing the words you’re reading. How’s that for transparency?
Oh, I’ve fallen hard for Jesus. He has long since moved from being a side dish on my crowded plate to becoming both my full meal and delicious dessert. I now live convinced He is the life I crave. And yet . . . because I live in this body, in this realm, I can still be tempted.”

In her latest book, Finding Deep and Wide, Shellie Rushing Tomlinson, encourages us not to settle for less than the life Jesus died for and intends for each of us.

My heart was drawn into the book as I read these words from the introduction:

“While agreeing that living with God in our midst—in our very bodies, at that—should work us up into the type of daily celebration the prophet Isaiah spoke about … we accept a sub- standard experience of what it means to carry the Hope of Glory around in these all-too-human vessels. We settle for only acting like having new life in Christ is something to shout about.”

She calls this “less-than” living and we all do it at some point in our walk with God. At times, we don’t even realize it.

Finding Deep and Wide is a gentle wake-up call, a reminder we have been called to more. Shellie shares:

“My not-so-secret goal is to make you crazy hungry for the way of life God wants for you, planned for you, and paid the ultimate cost to provide for you.”

Shellie shares her personal stories weaving them with the stories found in Scripture to deliver truth for us to unfold for ourselves. Her words are a dare not to settle, to keep digging until we find our souls satisfied in Him.

Shellie writes with a sense of humor while sharing the truth found in God’s Word. As she writes about God’s invitation to us all, she stirs a longing in our own souls to accept His invitation again and again.

“He longs for us to see holy moments. Every moment spent with God is holy because God is holy, and wherever we are, He is.”

She breaks through the great divide between secular and divine, opening our eyes to see all of life as divine moments where God at work. She repeatedly brings the invitation to leave behind our preconceived ideas of religion and journey side by side with Jesus leading the way into a full life.

Each chapter closes with “Questions for Group Study or Private Reflection” making this a wonderful book for both individual and group study use.

** As part of the launch team, I was provided a pdf copy to read. After only a few chapters in, I purchased a copy for myself. The book is a meaningful and faith challenging read.

When I started reading Finding Deep and Wide, I did not know I would discover truths for my life and relationship with Christ. I have been walking with Jesus for many years, through many hills and valleys. I knew that whenever He felt far away from me, it was because I moved and He did NOT move away from me. This book filled in many gaps in my footsteps. I really latched on to the information about the Ark of the Covenant, built by specific instructions for God for its use and handling. I loved this part: “Remember when we noted the Ark’s intentionally designed portability? God instructed the Israelites to equip the golden box that served as meeting place with God and men with poles and rings so that they could carry it about. He didn’t want to come and go in the lives of the children of Israel, and He doesn’t want to come and go in ours. He didn’t want to be worshipped only on their holy days, and He has no interest in being our Sunday-morning God. He wanted them to know what it was to live, work and play in His presence, and He wants this for us.” Shellie Rushing Tomlinson has written from her heart and her very honest and funny friendship with the reader. I truly mean the “friendship” part because she pulls you into her warm kitchen while telling you about her life and what scripture is teaching her. I love that the song I sang as a child and then taught my own children about “Deep and Wide”, now is only a glimpse of what we can know in our daily lives with the Savior. Meaningful without being difficult to wade through, this is a great guide presented with scripture for our journey.

My review! Lol I had written it’s this morning! “God initiates relationship with man. God loves first, and always.” Shellie Tomlinson, Finding Deep and Wide. Over and over again, this point is made, God wants a relationship with us, in the good, the bad, and the ugly of our lives. Not just when we are having quiet time or sitting in church, but when we are doing laundry, cooking supper, spending time with family. He’s not watching us from a distance, He’s there in the nitty-gritty of it all, and He WANTS to be, y’all! This morning that truth is just resonating in my heart. It’s not my efforts, my goodness, my trying to get it right....it’s Jesus desiring to communicate with me, and that communication made possible because of the cross. And He desires you, too! His love for you and desire to have a relationship with you is so much more than you could ever imagine. And you can never mess that up. Look at the Israelites....all their belly-aching, idol-worshipping, turning their back on God didn’t stop His love for them. Now there were consequences to their sin, there always is, but NOTHING changes His love, for them, or for us. I hope you have that relationship with Him, and that you want to go deeper and wider than ever this year, I know I do! And this book will help you do just that!

Shelling Rushing Tomlinson’s book, “Finding Deep and Wide” is a Life changer! And that is not an exaggeration!
For years I have settled for an “obligatory walk” with Jesus... I loved Him and tried my best to ‘do the right stuff’ and ‘not do the wrong stuff’ in order to gain and keep His love and approval. All the while, I was missing out on the Life Jesus really wanted to share with me - the Life He died to give me.
To be honest I still have a tendency to slip back into my old mindset of ‘duty’. But now, I am so much quicker to recognize the “big lie” (that Shellie so wisely exposes!) and embrace Jesus out of ‘devotion’ ... His for me and mine for Him. And that is what this book is about!
This is not a “one time read”. It’s a ‘tool’ you can grab, ‘medicine’ you can take, and a life giving drink of “Living Water” you can gulp again and again! A book you will want to share with those you love because you know how much it can help!
Thank you Shellie, for the truth, hope and instruction you give every reader in “Finding Deep and Wide”! Believing and Embracing its message absolutely changes everything!

Shellie, you had me at the Intro! This book was such a great read. Shellie has a fantastic sense of humor and is also a wonderful storyteller. I love how she uses stories in every chapter to get her point across. When reading this book, I kept thinking of Matthew 11:28-30, “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” Finding Deep and Wide is a book devoted to showing and teaching us how to do just that. How to live freely and lightly. How to say no to religion and yes to a relationship. For me personally, the chapter on Enoch alone is worth the price of the book (you'll have to read it to understand what I mean). Also, you might just find yourself singing Whip It, by Devo. Consider yourself warned. :)

One need look no further than the cover of Shellie Rushing Tomlinson's new book, Finding Deep and Wide to find inspiration, encouragement and a reason to read it. If you are tired of "...settling for the Life You Have and" want to "Live the One Jesus Dies to Give You" this book will serve as an excellent source of wisdom, wit and the Word!!! This book helps those of us (ME, for example) who love the Lord but have at times or over time fallen into the trap of "Christian duty" or 3 points and a prayer time with God. Shellie's tone and style as well as her humor make this book like a great conversation with a wise & wonderful Christian friend who's been there & done that. If you have ever felt like you are sleepwalking "through the motions of this life in some vague hope of what waits in the next," long for more and are ready to move toward the life God meant for us to live then, READ THIS BOOK!!
I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. Opinions expressed within this review are my own.

In her follow up to "Heart Wide Open" Shellie Tomlinson continues to grow in Christ and urges us to come along on her journey. She has a remarkable ability to illustrate scripture through every day living and urges us to allow Christ into every aspect of our lives.

She cab "hit us where it hurts" without being judgmental or howling at the moon as many Christian authors do. She can spin scripture into something as common as finding a lost puppy in a way that illustrates God's plan for redemption in our lives, even when we're goofing it up.

The biggest take away for me is seeing how much I miss God's blessing when I covet aspects of my life that I don't let Jesus into. There's so much that we can have right now if we simply place faith in Christ, study scripture, and include God in all our moments, not just the "holy" moments.

I highly recommend the investment, you'll definitely be better for it.

Grab a copy today for yourself....and a friend
You may be wondering why you should buy another book? How is this going to make a difference in your life? Well I can tell you for a fact that as you sit and read the pages of Finding Deep & Wide you will be drawn in like the warmth of the sun. Shellie's southern charm has a way of helping me understand in simple terms how I can make changes in my Christian walk. Not only that, but why it's so important that I am not just living a life where I check-in with God at church and bible study. I began to really think about how God wants to be a part of my daily life and I can accept that invitation without having to move into a chapel to live a life of isolation.

If you're struggling with living more than a surface christian Life then you're not alone. Living life by only checking of your to-do list is exhausting to the soul. If so, then this book is for you!

This is the first book by Shellie Tomlinson I have read. Although I found the biblical content strong and helpful I found it very hard to relate to her on a personal level. I usually enjoy personal stories because I can see my self in the author. However, this book starts with a story about Shellie at her lake house and she also tells other stories about when she is on personal prayer retreats, one which she is at a beach condo. I know the body of chirst is filled with people from all social and economic backgrounds but personally, as a middle class, stay at home mom of school aged kids, I could not relate to this author.

Reading the digital version I cannot wait to get my hard copy! Finding Deep and Wide is so good, really gets me stop and think about my relationship with Jesus. How we were each created to do life with God, not just on Sundays or in bible reading time, but always and in everything we do! Love this book, and Shellie!

Shellie's writing causes one to pause, and reflect where they are in their journey with God. The book offers much encouragement about one's relationship with the Lord. This book was used as a Bible Study book and generated much discussion and transparency as we evaluated where we struggled and acknowledged where we had grown.

I’m not sure I’m in agreement with all the theology expressed here, but there were plenty of “hmm...I need to think some more about that thought/statement/concept and how it me in my faith.”

Shellie’s ability to mix humor with very thought provoking messages in “Finding Deep and Wide” makes this book exciting to read. This book should be “required reading” for every believer. New believers will see that you are not alone in the questions you have. Shellie does a good job answering a lot of those with real life stories. The long time believer will be brought back to a “status check”. Are we doing what we are called to do? Are we where we should be in our relationship with Christ? Are we emptying ourselves of the
“Me” and filling it with Him? Do we demonstrate His love for us in our love for others? We don’t have to wonder if we are worthy, when we have messed up; he is waiting and we just have to run into his arms!
