Riverside U #2

Body Checked By The Defenseman

Rate this book
Ruby Foxx is the only girl I’ve ever wanted… and she’s completely off-limits.

Her brother is my teammate and best friend. They’re my family. We grew up across the hall, sharing a secret connection I’ve tried hard to forget.

But I never crossed the line—not then, and not when we came to Riverside U—I’ve kept my distance.

Until her dorm floods, and she moves into the hockey house. Now, there’s nowhere to hide. Ruby’s always around, and my feelings are hitting harder than a body check on the ice.

Then she confesses she’s never been with a man… and asks me to change that.

I can’t just take what she’s offering—I need to make it special—something she’ll never regret.

I promise to take my time and teach her, but I’m the one getting schooled because I’m falling fast.

The guilt is like a slap shot, knowing I’m betraying my best friend—my family—by falling in love with her.

I know I should skate away, but after tasting happiness with Ruby, I can’t let her go.

What if, by holding on, I lose everything—on and off the ice?

For mature audiences. Guaranteed HEA and no cheating.

This was a quick read. I picked it up because I needed a break from my dark romance reads and lad I did it!

The writing was fast pacing, the writing was amazing, and the chemistry between Mack and Ruby was off the charts.

Silly plot. The H and h had known each since teenagers. Of course, the H is a manwhore who is in love with the h. The h wants him to help her lose her V-card. It’s all in the blurb.

Sooo!!! I'm literally on the edge of my seat, there's so much to unpack here. First off, RC Stephens is like the Queen of College Hockey. She just is. There are a few Queens in that spot who I can count on one hand, just like Whitney, Mariah and Celine all share the Queen title. And when it comes to college hockey, RC is there - at the top, waving to us (the public) with her tiara firmly in place. It's a well-deserved title too. So that all said, enter "Body Checked by the Defenseman" in the Riverside U series.... oh the entrance this story made.

First off, as you'll notice with the book's description, we've got a forbidden romance, obviously college hockey, a brother's best friend / best friend's sister, virgin, he will teach her.... I don't need to continue, do I? That was a rhetorical question because no, no I do not need to keep going. Both Macklin and Ruby have had a tough go of it, but grew up across the hall from one another along with Ruby's brother. They became their own family, of sorts, ending up at college together too. But this book is more than all of that and certainly more than the tropes presented and that we were teased by. The undercurrent here is that of humanity, of loss, grief, suffering, loneliness and abandonment, mixed with feelings of inadequacy and worth. I know, I know, that was a lot! And this book IS a lot! But it's of course a HEA book so we know RC will get us there... after she drags us through it. But just as with all of her books, I of course highly recommend. I'm forever a RC Stephens fan and I'm loving this new Riverside U series! <3

Poor writing

DNF. The writing felt too juvenile. It was awkward and repetitive. I gave up trying to get through it after a few chapters.

The MMC was also super cliché. I realize a lot of the tropes can be cliché as well, but combined with the writing style I couldn't handle it.

This is book 2 in RC Stephens interconnected standalone series. I am so grateful to be on her ARC team because I absolutely love her Hockey men and this story was so sweet.

Macklin
He lost his parents when he was 10 and moved from Foster family to foster family. He ended up living across the hall from Hayden and Ruby. They became his family and mean everything to him. He is loyal, kind, caring and so hard on himself. He believes he is not good enough. He is a talented Hockey player and feels he owes Hayden and Abuela everything. Periwinkle is his everything even if it is forbidden.

Ruby
She is the little sister to Hayden and best friends with Charlie (Face Off With The Captain, review on my account). She works beyond hard at everything she does but she has a problem. She never feels close enough to any guy she meets and even when someone is beyond attractive and kind she still can't get herself to go all the way. When she finds herself living in the hockey house and runs into Mack it all changes.

Their love was so sweet and awkward in the best ways. They both wanted more but they are both so insecure they feared the otherone wouldn't. I truly enjoyed watching their love bloom and become such a perfect place for both of them. I also absolutely loved how we got little snippets from book one thrown in throughout the story. Nothing too crazy to spoil but enough to make you want to go back and read their book.

Abuela is such an amazing women and she knows everything haha. I did feel like the grandchildren we meet were a little weird and felt awkward but I'm hoping maybe it ties into Luc's story in the future maybe.

A few conversations felt a little... not sure how to say it. Unnatural? Though it could be intentional since they are being awkward but it made me loose the immersion a few times. Overall the story was amazing and I loved the development and I can't wait to read the next story 😍
I also can't wait to order my physical books because I need those male covers!
I'm hoping to have the FaceOff with the Captain bookshoot posted this week (there is a pickle and potatoe 😉)

Riverside U #2

By R.C. Stephens

🏒 Sports Romance
🏒 College Romance
🏒 Brother’s best friend

⭐ 5/5 🌶️ 4/5

Ruby wanted Macklin for a long time
Macklin never found himself worthy of Ruby

Another great book in this series

A really heartwarming slow burn love story. Ruby and Macklin don’t have the best conditions for their journey. Both have parental pasts that left them full of hurt, grief and insecurities. Life really took its toll on them even at their young ages.
But they made it. Along with Ruby’s brother and Macklin’s best friend Hayden, they got into college and stand now at life changing points in their lives today.
But deep down changes are slower when they come at all. Macklin secretly felt something for Ruby since they were teenagers, but he never found himself worthy of her in every way. Battling with loss and the instabilities of homelife messed with his self esteem.
Ruby got it a little easier but certain circumstances have her questioning her ability in her future. One thing she is sure of and that is her crush on Macklin.
But growing up very close and her brother being protective and MAcklin’s best friend doesn’t make anything simple.
What was supposed to be a get together for a solution of her issue, ends in a complicated tangle of feelings, responsibilities and family involvements.
There are a lot of secrets, maturing and standing up for your wants to discover and overcome. But as always it came to a full circle without too much drama and with carefully handled situations.

The writing style keeps you reading without putting down the book too often. It has the feels, the right pace and never draws out. The characters were wonderfully created, people with flaws, issues and relatable. The story worked out perfectly till the end and the side characters are brought in an amount that has you becoming interested in them and wanting their stories as well.

R.C. Stephens' Body Checked by the Defenseman is an engaging addition to the Riverside U Hockey series, delivering a compelling mix of romance and emotional depth. The story revolves around Ruby Foxx and Macklin, whose relationship blossoms amidst themes of forbidden love and personal struggles.

The forbidden romance trope is central to the narrative, as Macklin grapples with his feelings for Ruby, who is not only his best friend's sister but also a cherished part of his makeshift family. Their chemistry is palpable, marked by a blend of tension and tenderness that keeps readers invested in their journey. The emotional stakes are heightened when Ruby reveals a significant secret to Macklin, propelling their relationship into uncharted territory filled with both passion and vulnerability.

Stephens excels at weaving emotional depth into her storytelling. The characters are well-developed, each carrying their own burdens of loss and longing. Macklin's backstory—his tumultuous childhood and longing for family—adds layers to his character, making his connection with Ruby all the more poignant. The author skillfully balances the lighter moments with deeper themes of grief, loneliness, and self-discovery, ensuring that the narrative resonates on multiple levels.

The pacing of the story is steady, allowing for a gradual build-up of tension that culminates in a satisfying resolution. The dialogue is sharp and engaging, filled with witty banter that enhances the romantic tension between the protagonists. Readers will appreciate how Macklin's protective nature contrasts with his internal conflict about pursuing Ruby, creating a rich emotional landscape.

Overall, Body Checked by the Defenseman is a heartfelt sports romance that combines humor, angst, and genuine emotion. For fans of the genre looking for a story that offers both charm and substance, this book is a must-read. It earns a solid four stars for its well-crafted characters and engaging plot that keeps you turning the pages until the very end.

𝐁𝐨𝐝𝐲 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐧 is the 2nd book in the Riverside U Hockey series by R.C. Stephens, featuring a brother’s best friend, forbidden romance for Ruby and Mack. She’s the girl he’s measured everyone against, and the one he can never have, because Ruby and her brother are the only family he’s ever had. Now she’s living in the hockey house and begging him to cash in her V-card. Can he teach her what she wants to know without falling head over heels in love? Will he lose everything, including hockey, if he can’t let go of her?

Mack and Ruby definitely sucked me in with their deep-seated emotional connection and back stories. They clearly had a bond that was exclusive to the two of them and there was an obvious chemistry that rolls into some yummy angst and tension as they first fought the pull, then worked to hide their relationship from everyone. The great world building continues in this story with so many amazing characters that bring banter, support, wisdom, and even drama. I loved Ruby and Hayden’s Abuela, who was the stabilizing, loving figure for all three of them and could talk sense to them when no one else could. It was also fun to see Charlie and Finn from another perspective, as well as the other guys on the team. There were even a couple characters hanging around that I didn’t like, which always adds to the fun in the form of plot twists! I’m thinking of Cade and Annie right now, who I did like, and I cannot wait to read their story!!😉😅

I received a free ARC, and am leaving this review voluntarily.

I rcvd an ARC of this book. All thoughts are my own.

Macklin and Ruby have always been in each others' orbit. Both have similar backstories, as well - no parents, raised by Ruby's abuela. Mack came from a loving family, but his parents died, and he was forced into a foster home situation that was downright horrible. He became friends with Ruby and her brother, Hayden, and the rest is history. They became their own little family of sorts. But Macklin and Ruby have always pined for each other - they just never thought they would have what they wanted. And when they went to college together, Mack decided risking his friendship with Hayden wasn't something he wanted to do, so he ignored Ruby. Until circumstances throw them together in the same house, and Ruby presented Mack with an offer he couldn't refuse.

There were parts of this book that kind of ticked me off, but I mean, they were supposed to haha Some of the side characters were real doozies, and they made me mad the way they acted haha I know they were there to cause turmoil, AND IT WORKED! There were lots of obstacles for Mack and Ruby, but somehow it all came together just when it needed to. They were meant to be together from the time they were 14, and their chemistry was off the charts. Neither of them ever really wanted any other but the other. It's definitely super sweet when it's childhood sweethearts.

I really like this series, and the characters. They are their own little found family, it seems, and they are there for each other through everything. I love how the stories are interconnected, too. They are sweet, steamy and swoony, and RC is one of the best hockey storytellers - I have loved every book I've read!

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.25
Spice: 🌶🌶.5

This quick and fast-paced read is the 2nd book in the Riverside U hockey series. It features all of my favorite tropes, but the story itself was more than meet the eye. I loved Ruby and Mack's connection, and the chemistry between these two was off the charts!

Tropes:
🏒 College Hockey Romance
🩷 Forbidden Love
🏒 Brother's Best Friend
🩷 Roommates
🏒 Secret Relationship
🩷 Vrgn FMC who wants him to take it

Mack has always had a thing for Ruby. No one ever quite compared to her, and her always measured girls up to the one he could never have. Things change, though, when Ruby moves across the hall from him in the hockey house.

Tensions rise between these two, and the angst between them is huge. They fight against their pull towards each other for a long time. But when Ruby comes to Mack and wants him to take her V-card and teach her everything she'll like, things are poor in jeopardy for him. Or so he believes.

Mack is scared to lose everything. That is hockey, his best friend and the only family he's ever had (Rudy and her brother). This issue is that he wants Ruby, like he's never wanted anything else in his entire life.

They have to keep their relationship a secret, and that can be a struggle for them. They have such a deep and strong connection to each other. Their grief, loss, and pain made this story an emotional one. They bonded over their hurt, and it made them such a stein couple in my mind. Even with the struggle of being caught, they do end up with their HEA.

A fabulous slowburn college sports romance as Ruby asks hockey player Mack, her brother’s best friend and the boy she’s been in love with since she was fourteen if he’d help her with losing her virginity. What she didn’t know was that Mack felt the same as she did but didn’t think he was good enough for her and he also didn’t want to betray the trust of the man he considered his brother. But when a flood means that Ruby has to move into the hockey house, he finds it harder to keep his distance until he gives in but it’s on his terms. He’ll take her virginity, but he’ll also make sure its as special and unforgettable as she deserves but along the way he realises he wants more than a quick fling with Ruby. All he has to do is find a way to explain it to her brother before he catches them sneaking around and hope he doesn’t kill him

This was such a well written romance with all the feels and a steady flow to the story. There was fantastic chemistry between the hero and heroine and more than a little angst. Mack had lost both his parents and bounced around in the system until he ended up living across the hall from Ruby’s Abuela, who seeing how neglectful his foster mother was, had opened her house and her heart to the lonely boy. They'd become his family but now he saw the kind of future he could have with Ruby and he wanted it more than anything. He was such a golden retriever type of hero who only wanted to make everything perfect for the woman he'd loved forever.

The next outing in the Riverside U series by R.C. Stephens delivers a swoon-worthy, heartfelt romance featuring Ruby and Mack. From the very beginning, Mack, the hockey player with a heart of gold, stole mine. Always striving to do the right thing, Mack finds himself in a tricky situation when Ruby—his best friend and teammate Hayden's sister—comes to live in the hockey house after a flood in her dorm.

Mack's connection to Ruby goes way back. At ten years old, after entering foster care, Mack ended up living across from Ruby and Hayden, whose family became his own. Despite harbouring deep feelings for Ruby, Mack has kept them hidden, believing he isn't good enough for her. But now, with Ruby constantly around, the lines between friendship and something more begin to blur.

The story takes an emotional turn when Ruby confides a secret to Mack, setting their relationship on a path that is both tender and passionate. The chemistry between them is electric, the banter is delightful, and the journey to their HEA is filled with just the right amount of tension—especially with the brotherly hurdle of Hayden to navigate.

R.C. Stephens weaves a sweet, passionate story full of heart, and the happily-ever-after is oh-so-satisfying. If you're a fan of sports romance with depth and charm, Body Checked by the Defenseman is a must-read!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.

This is the story of Ruby and Macklin. These two grew up together because they were neighbors in and apartment complex. Ruby and her brother got really lucky and were brought up by their Aunt while Hayden was put in the foster care system. Macklin has always had a thing for Ruby but out of respect for her aunt and brother, his best friend, and not feeling like he was good enough for her, he never did a thing about it. In turn she has had a big crush on him too. Now they are grown and in college, she finds herself about to move into the hockey house and right into Maclins's space and world . When she asks him for a huge favor. One he knows he can't say no too. He knows that this is going to put his heart on the links. He just hopes that he can walk away with his heart all in one piece.
I loved reading this book. I loved getting to know all the characters and watching them grow. This is college after all and there is a lot of growing that takes place in those four years. I loved watching these two fall for each other and try hard to fight it knowing it was a losing battle. This was a great read. One you really will want to have on your kindle.

Ruby was the one girl Mack had always wanted but could never have. She’s his teammate’s younger sister and having grown up in foster care, the friendship he has with the Foxx siblings and their grandmother means everything to him. So when Ruby approaches him with an unexpected proposal he finds it’s impossible to tell her no and struggles to keep his heart out of the arrangement.

I really loved the bond Ruby and Mack have from growing up together and the trust they share. Mack was so soft and a sweetheart to Ruby and it was obvious he gave his heart away to her a long time ago. Ruby always saw the good in Mack and she fell for him more through their arrangement even when he was testing her patience.

Sure, Ruby’s brother and his opinion were a bit of a hurdle but their love was stronger than either of them anticipated. Ive been enjoying this Riverside U series so much and can’t wait for Cade and Annie’s story after that kiss that caught everyone off guard.

Thank you @rc_stephens_author for this eARC in exchange for my honest feedback.

This was a very cute, bedroom tutor trope that I usually absolutely love but I just couldn’t connect with this one, there wasn’t anything wrong with the story that I could point out, so I have no criticisms.

I did love Ruby, she really knew what she wanted, wasn’t afraid to speak her mind, and ask for what she wants. Mack was the same way, which makes me feel like I missed the pining of their story, which might be what I was missing to connect. These two work so well as a friends to lovers, but it felt very calm and natural for them to move to this, which is great for friends to lovers, but also why it’s not my favorite trope overall.

I also loved how much Ruby and Mack’s friendship stayed forefront of their relationship where even though they constantly wanted to be touching but they also took time to make sure they felt okay, took care of each others emotions and wishes. It was so cute to see, and I loved how much their Abuela handled their relationship. I can’t wait for Hayden’s book!

Ruby and Macklin grew up together, as Ruby's  Abuelo had his back while, not to mention he was best friends with her older brother. He has gone through a lot in his life which gave him serious self-esteem issues so he thinks he'll never be good enough for Ruby even though she's the only woman he wants. They all end up in college together but Macklin has been weird for a few years which hurt Ruby a ton, but after she ends up staying in the hockey house with him & her brother, they figure out they're still drawn to each other so they get even closer with the sparks flying. He's still worried about things as they're getting to know each other in the sexy way under the radar because of her brother, but he can't stay away from her. I LOVED these two together as this story was filled with sweet moments, but there's still that big issue of telling her brother which could break them. This was a great story that was easy to devour cover to cover in one sitting, and I CANNOT WAIT for more in this series! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Macklin and Hayden have been best friends forever. Hayden and Ruby are brother and sister and grew up across the hall from Macklin. Now Macklin and Hayden are on the same hockey team for the university.

Ruby we met in the previous book. Her dorm was flooded and now she and her roommate - are living at the hockey house with Ruby’s brother and his hockey team. Ruby and Charlie are on the track team. They love being female athletes.

Macklin has always liked Ruby but since being friends with her and her brother he never wanted to make a move on her as he didn’t want that friendship to end. Now that Ruby and Charlie are living in the hockey house Macklin can’t do much to avoid her. They try sneaking around and they didn’t do a good job of keeping that a secret. The big question is how will Ruby’s brother react?

I did receive a free ARC book copy of this book. I am freely leaving an honest review.

This is a coming of age, virgin, hockey story, although there was so little hockey I'm not sure about that last part.

As an avid lover of hockey stories, I was fully expecting to love this book, but hockey was definitely the afterthought here (I think there were 3 hockey scenes. I actually forgot he was a hockey player a few times.) The focus of this story is on the friendship turned love-of-my-life relationship between our two main characters and getting rid of Ruby's dreaded virginity. This is a serious pet peeve of mine... are we still acting like virginity is some scarlet letter you have to rid yourself of??

Unfortunately, I didn't care for any of the characters either. Every single person seems to be keeping secrets despite the supposed "closeness" of all the relationships. Several of them are fairly self-righteous considering their own secrets. Mario's granddaughters were the final straw for me.

Sadly, this one wasn't my cup of tea.

Ruby y Macklin se conocen de siempre. Eran vecinos.

Spicy 3/5

I just have to say that I’m loving the Riverside U series so much! After reading the first book, I was very excited about Macklin and Ruby.

Mack and Ruby basically grew up together so he is very much a part of her family. His best friend is her brother. When she moves into the hockey house, things started to change between them.

Throughout the years, Mack has fought his feelings hard for Ruby. He’s never felt like he was good enough for her. The two of them find it impossible to fight their connection. However, how do they break the news to her brother?

First of all, Mack is one of the sweetest MMCs I’ve ever read. I love the little things he does for Ruby. He’s always putting her first. Ruby helps him see that he’s always been the best person she knew. She can always count on him to be there for her. Their story was so wonderful and I cannot wait for the next story!

There was so much to love about this book. The trope of dating her brother’s best friend never fails to attract me to a story, and this author’s version was outstanding.
Macklin & Ruby are two amazing characters who have been in each other’s lives for quite some time. They have an instant connection as teens, but now that they are older they find it difficult to remain just friends.
This is the part where the story really took off for me. It seemed like they were fighting a losing battle because someone was going to get hurt, yet they couldn’t walk away from each other.
I really liked the whole family dynamic they shared with Abuela, and she endeared herself to me even more when she revealed her secret.
This book finished off beautifully with such an amazing epilogue, and I was excited to read that there is at least another story to come.

Body Checked by the Defenseman is fabulous read. I loved this so much. Ruby and Macklin will own your heart. Ruby has crushed on Macklin since she was a teenager and is thrown into living in the same house as him and her brother when her dorm flood. Macklin hasn't had an easy life and the only constant have been Ruby, her brother and their grandmother besides the hockey team. He has crushed on Ruby for years and hasn't felt enough for her. I love how the chemistry builds and Macklin shows Ruby how much he cares in little ways. The banter is amazing and I love how the heat builds. Ruby and Macklin are perfect for each other. If you love those brothers best friend, hockey, college romance you are going to just fall hard for Ruby and Macklin. I could not put this down. You need to meet Ruby and Macklin today. After the passing of his parents Macklin was raised in foster care and was placed in a home where he became neighbors with Hayden and Ruby. He and Hayden became best friends, and it is for that reason that Macklin didn’t give into his feelings for Ruby but that is about to change when they find themselves living in the same hockey house and she wants his guidance.

Ruby has had feelings for Macklin as well. She may believe that there could never be anything between them but because of their friendship he is the perfect choice to make her comfortable with physical intimacy however neither is prepared for what this means for their relationship.

The relationship that Macklin has with Ruby and her family is the most important one he has so he is conflicted but once he realizes what they could have today he realizes that what they share is worth fighting for.

Body Checked By The Defenseman ( Riverside U Book 1 ) hooked from the very first page , devouring every single word to the point where I actually lost track of time and ended reading until 3 am in the morning, smiling, laughing of course to myself so I wouldn’t wake up my daughter , crying and rooting so freaking hard . If I had to choose 3 words to best describe Mack and Rubys story they would have to be beautiful, emotional and heartbreaking. This is so much more than your typical sports romance . It’s a journey about struggles and love , friendships, healing and second chances . Mack and Ruby both have their demons and struggle in their lives , but i absolutely loved watching them preserve though them all . The way they were there for each other was truly inspiring

Mack is Ruby’s brothers’ best friend and teammate, and they all grew up together. Mach knows that Ruby is off limits, and makes sure he avoids her whenever he can, but now it is difficult as Ruby’s dorm floods and she moves into the hockey house.
This is a well written story which is an easy to read, fast packed, emotional roller coaster, with family, friendships, secrets, close proximity, challenges, guilt, undeniable chemistry, jealousy, tension, touch her and die vibes, and love, which leads to an entertaining, and sweet, heartfelt romance.
I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.

Mack, this guy is such an incredibly sweetheart that will steal your heart almost instantly and you will be ok with it. He has been pining away for his best friend’s sister for so long that when he finds himself face to face with her and her proposal he knows he should walk away but can’t. Ruby has had feelings for Mack for so long and thinks he only sees her as his best friend’s little sister but now she has an idea that may work in her favor, but she has to get Mack to agree. This story was packed full of emotions that makes your heart ache for the characters and love when you see them winning, but they have a lot of obstacles to go through in order to find their happy ending or will they? I really enjoyed this story and the characters I couldn’t put it down and devoured it instantly.

This is a sweet, spicy, unrequited, young awkward love that had me hooked from the first moment. Mack and Ruby were neighbors as kids, her brother is his best friend, but the two of them have been connected all along. They had a strong friendship, but there's that worry about her brother's feelings. I enjoyed their journey, the emotions that were touched on with his past in the foster system, and what impact that has on his now. The story flows, pulls us into their world and touches on their friends as well. I'm enjoying all of these characters, the closeness that they all have, and I loved their Abuela! I'm looking forward to more from this series.

I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Ruby and Mack will melt your heart!

Body Checked By The Defenseman is a fun, flirty, and heart melting story. Mack and Ruby have grown up together and now they are living under the same roof. The close proximity and years of pent up emotions start to boil over. These two take us on a sweet journey that will have you rooting for them to figure things out. However like all secret relationships the drama and closeness of the hockey teammates make it more difficult then you can imagine. Can Mack and Ruby figure things out and finally have their shot? Or will family drama and an overprotective brother get in their way? Take a chance on Mack and Ruby because you’ll fall in love with them.
