USA Today-bestselling author Sherry Thomas decided years ago that her goal in life is to write every kind of book she enjoys reading. Thus far she has published romance, fantasy, mystery, young adult, and three books inspired by the martial arts epics she grew up devouring. Her books regularly receive starred reviews and best-of-the-year honors from trade publications, including such outlets as the New York Times and National Public Radio.

A Study in Scarlet Women, A Conspiracy in Belgravia, and The Hollow of Fear, the first three entries in her gender-bending Lady Sherlock historical mystery series, are all NPR best books of the year. The Magnolia Sword, her 2019 release, is the first young adult retelling of the original Ballad of Mulan in the English language.

Sherry emigrated from China at age 13 and English is her second language.

“Sherry Thomas has done the impossible and crafted a fresh, exciting new version of Sherlock Holmes. From the carefully plotted twists to the elegant turns of phrase, A Study in Scarlet Women is a splendid addition to Holmes’s world. This book is everything I hoped it would be, and the next adventure cannot come too soon!” —Deanna Raybourn, New York Times bestselling author

“Thomas weaves a lush, intricate fantasy world around a gorgeous romance that kept me riveted until the very last page. What a breathtaking journey!” (Marie Lu, New York Times bestselling author of the Legend series )

"Sherry Thomas is the most powerfully original historical romance author writing today."—Lisa Kleypas, New York Times bestselling author

Short-form romance is difficult to pull off. There isn't enough time for either the characters' relationship to develop, or for the reader to come to care about them. This story was nice, but nice like hearing good news about someone you don't really know. You know, like when your friend tells you that her sister, whom you haven't met or maybe were introduced to once, is getting married. "Oh, good for her!" But it doesn't make much difference to you personally.

Also, saw the "twist" coming from the first letter.

Maddeningly I know I only recently wrote the blurb below, but I don't know when because I didn't date it and somehow never before noticed that there isn't an obvious published or last updated or some such date that I can find.

Anyway, since I am finally getting around to all the books in the series a re-read seemed appropriate as a refresher. And also, I wanted to take the taste of another, very different but displeasing book out of my mouth, as it were.

This fit the bill rather well. Having seen the same characters rather later in their lives, it was fun going back to a very sweet beginning.

I don't think I've ever mentioned how charming it is that Thomas thanks her readers in her acknowledgments. Obviously, the pleasure is all mine. But it's a lovely thing to do, nonetheless. A counter example to those authors who behave badly.

[Presumably around February 2021]

I started to feel bad that I couldn't remember this better after only a couple of months. Then I realized I was off by a year. So, not as obviously losing my mind. One unexpected way in which reading is good for memory.

A cute, lovely and partly epistolary romantic story of a couple who falls in love at first sight, but can't do anything about it at the time. Honestly, there wasn't that much to get into. However, if one of the future main characters is the stepson, I'm definitely interested.

I'll probably check out the rest of this series.

3.5 stars. A sweet short story - too short to be called a novella, really. It started well and I liked both MCs. It could have been developed a bit more, I thought, but still, it was an enjoyable but quick read.

This is a lead-in to the Fitzhugh trilogy, which I will tackle next.

My review contains spoilers and they're mostly my thoughts as I went with the book... for more, visit Punya Reviews...

When I saw this freebie by Sherry Thomas, I knew instantly what my next read was going to be. After all, I needed to find out whose story this was. The characters didn’t ring any bell just that moment (I read the series back in 2012, don’t remember every detail now).

It turns out, Claiming the Duchess is a very, very short novella dedicated to Clarissa, the adoring step-mother to our H of Beguiling the Beauty (book 1), Christian. She appeared briefly there in a couple of scenes and we learned that she and Christian shared a very strong bond unlike that of a step-mother and son. Christian has been the Duke for quite a while at that time and Clarissa had re-married, living happily with her second husband. Needless to say, neither was fond of the late Duke, who was vain, presumptuous and a randy womanizer, always berating Christian for his interest in science.

This story, which takes us back at least 13 years into the past, shows how badly Clarissa was treated by the Duke, who not only loved poking fun at her whenever he felt like it but also was incapable of fidelity. He married a young Clarissa, who was all starry-eyed and in love with her husband. That illusion, however, shattered very soon. The Duke broke her heart, as plain and simple. Yet Clarissa went on, a loving relationship with her step-son the only good thing coming from this marriage.

At a house party, Clarissa meets a Mr. Kingston, cousin to one of the Duke’s friends. The meeting was very brief, not a lot was said or done, yet Clarissa couldn’t forget the handsome man, who, maybe, was some years younger to her own 28. Because of the way Mr. Kingston behaves on the rest of his stay and abruptly leaves at the end of the house party, Clarissa decides their one moment of soul shattering connection was just her imagination. Yet, she kept living on that... all alone, daydreaming away about him, while her husband went partying with his latest mistress.

At that point, Clarissa receives a letter from a Miss Kirkland with an ardent request for a cutting of the famous Algernon House lavender hydrangeas. And from that letter forms a lovely friendship that endured the next 4 years of Clarissa’s life, including her husband’s demise and the next years of mourning... In between, she never stopped communicating with Miss Kirkland. But meeting her in person was another matter entirely cause she seemed to be a recluse and politely declined Clarissa’s invitations.

When Clarissa’s official mourning period is over, she decides to throw a house party. Meanwhile, have to mention that she never forgot about Mr. Kingston either, not knowing if they’d ever have an opportunity to know each-other on a deeper level. What would happen if she takes a chance, now that she’s free of her first marriage? Can she? Did Mr. Kingston ever thought of her the way she has for the past 4 years?

To find out, you gotta read this story. It was beautiful, especially the last chapter... My only complaint was the length of the novella. I certainly wouldn’t have minded a couple of more chapters to see James and Clarissa together in real sense. There was not a lot of that, not even a love scene. *sigh*

4 stars.

More of a character sketch than a short story, Claiming the Duchess fleshes out the background of one of the most sympathetic characters in Beguiling the Beauty, Clarissa Kingston, Dowager Duchess of Lexington. Although it's only about 50 pages long, it packs in the tropes: love at first sight, hidden identity and epistolary romance all play a role. If you read the first book and liked Clarissa, you should definitely read this free prequel! That said, it doesn't exactly work on its own, but rather as a story to either whet your appetite (if you haven't read Beauty), or to give you a little sigh of pleasure after tying up some loose ends (if you have read Beauty).

10 Word Summaries:

Laine: Dowager duchess from a loveless match gets Happily Ever After.

Meg: Love at first sight, fake identity, and a fistfight? Yes!

Awww....this was sweet. I've never read Sherry Thomas before, but I'll be starting now! This was a very short story that I read in one sitting, but despite its short length, it was still a satisfying read. There was no crazy misunderstanding, no needless angst, just a sweet story of two lonely souls finding each other. A nice way to end a day!

This story's great flaw is its length. It's a tease, leaving the reader wanting more. (I always want more whatever I read by Ms. Thomas.) I loved the letters in it--though not as funny as those in Eloisa James's marvelous Three Weeks with Madame X--they advance the plot nicely and, in the way of very good writing, show not tell the hearts of the protagonists.

Ms. Thomas has a full length novel coming out in the fall. I shall have to wait, eager for more.

This was the best shortest story I've ever read. It was sweet, romantic and endearing. My only complaint is that it wasn't longer, but on the other hand that's also what makes it unique. It was perfect in its simplicity.

A brief little amuse-bouche of a novella featuring Clarissa, an unhappy wife and an epistolary romance between Clarissa and her dear friend Julia Kirkland.
"She missed her younger self—not the naive girl who had worshiped him, but the optimistic and confident young woman who had believed the world her oyster. Or had that also been part of her naïveté? In either case, it had been a long, painful disillusionment to realize that the man she married was vain, arrogant, incapable of fidelity, and not even fun to have around.
The surprise ending is pretty clear from the very beginning, but I found the story charming and love how the author manages to give us a well-fleshed out portrait of Clarissa. 4 stars.

So this is a short story and a pretty short short story. (And it ends at 53% on my Kindle.) You should be able to get it for free at the ebook retailer of your choice.

If you like Sherry Thomas, you'll probably like this. It's okay if you don't have any idea how it relates to the Fitzhugh trilogy (I didn't) or if you know exactly how it will turn out based on the synopsis (I did).

But if you haven't read her, this probably isn't where to start. It's too short and they kind of glossed over some important conversations! But I just enjoy Thomas's writing a lot, so I enjoyed this.

A sweet short story about Clarissa, a neglected duchess, and Mr. Kingston, the man she falls in love with and .

Short but engaging, this story also introduces Christian, the hero of the first book in the series, Beguiling the Beauty.

Clarissa, Duchess of Lexington, meets Mr. James Kingston and develops a raging infatuation. She also has a penpal named Miss Julia Kirkland who is her bff. After she's widowed and out of mourning, she invites them both to a house party, hoping to find herself another husband.

1. My synopsis is nearly as long as this short story!! (OK, it's not, but for serious this thing is brief.)

2. I think I needed a little bit more to make this story actually...come alive? It's all so brusque and rushed: there's barely any space for things to matter.

3. Thomas's stories are still engaging and intriguing though!

It's a sweet story, but entirely too short. I really wanted to get to know Mr. Kingston, and that, obviously, didn't happen. It was also rather predictable. Still, it was sweet.

I love the plot of this story. The only pity is that it is so very short.
Clarissa’s husband has many mistresses, does not treat her or her step son nicely and managed to kill all the love she had for him when they married.
In a house party she meets Mr. Kingston, a nice younger man that defends her in one occasion but does not pay her any other attention.
After the party everybody leaves and she stays behind alone and vulnerable and ends up striking a pen pal friendship with a woman that had visited her gardens.
A twist of fate bring them back together in a very romantic plot.
