Can a scruffy carpenter and a neurotic accountant find middle ground?
With permission to begin construction and repairs on the Southern Charm, Sullivan ‘Sully’ Tarleton can’t wait to start bringing the old hotel back to new life. He and his crew jump on the tear-down until he overhears his friends talking about picking up the accountant at the airport. Volunteering since he needs to head that way, he doesn’t know the changes this accountant will bring to his life.
Suffering from severe OCD and additional issues after growing up with a hoarder parent, Chandler Braddock prefers to keep his surroundings neat, perfect, organised, and minimal. A reason he enjoys working with numbers. They always balance out, match up to others, and are able to be tracked. Often refusing to leave his New York office, he gives in when his best friend, Samuel, requests his presence in Florida. But what will happen when he’s met by a sexy, but very messy carpenter? And will he be able to give up his orderly life for such a man?
A quiet one, Nicole Dennis is the penname of an asexual author of different genres of fiction – both LGBT+ and hetero. Lots of characters, worlds, and stories build up in her head until she must get them down on the screen – anything from romance to fantasy to paranormal.
During the day, she works in a quiet office in Central Florida, where she makes her home, and enjoys the down time to slip into her imagination. She is owned by a feline companion – a fluffy house panther, known as Midnight the Void. A very special furbaby who is FIV+ and polydactyl on her front paws (fluffy danger mittens!).
By The Numbers is the second book in Nicole Dennis’ Southern Charm series, centering around the men of the Charm and Delights B&B & restaurant in the Florida panhandle. In book one, Rules of the Chef, we saw New Yorker and heir the a hoteling empire, Samuel, fall in love with Florida beach-bum and Delights Chef/Charm co-owner, Dakota. In this installment, we see Sully, the contractor and friend to Dakota, and Chandler, a neurotic accountant and Samuel’s best friend, explore their attraction.
Chandler is special, in so many ways. He has numerous, well-earned idiosyncrasies, thanks to a less than ideal childhood, among them severe OCD. Sully is the dirty construction foreman hired to revamp the charm and bring it back to her former glory. How can these two be compatible. You may question the pairing on the outside, but Dennis makes you believe it. Sully is patient and kind to Chandler, something he has never known. There are moments you wonder if they should be together, but you can not help pulling for them through everything. When they are, inevitably, driven apart your heart hurts for both of them.
I wanted to like this but I just couldn't get into it. A few points that stuck out for me:
*One MC has nearly debilitating OCD, including the need to carry industrial sized hand sanitizer while traveling, and yet kisses (even closed mouth) a perfect stranger upon meeting him at the airport? Yeah right.
* The "burly carpenter" wears campy t-shirts with sayings like "Sorry girls, I like bananas" and "Let's get one thing straight - I'm not." I am sure it was meant to add "character" but in my opinion it was kitschy and annoying. Cheeseball.
*Abrupt ending. Many loose ends that seemed to go nowhere.
Not one of the worst I've ever read, but I struggled to finish it. This isn't something I would ever read twice.
Chandler and Sully. Ummm...I liked the way Sully tried to open Chandler up, but I think Chandler was a little too quick about everything. I don't think he would have "gotten over" his need to do things a certain way in a couple of days. It just didn't feel like a natural progression. It kind of brought me out of the story and it takes A LOT for something to do that.
I also hated that Samuel was Chandler's best friend, but Samuel clearly didn't understand Chandler. My heart hurt for him. Samuel was a dick to Chandler and his needs. :(
Still didn't understand why Sully didn't make Chandler go to Robin (even after I read the reason, I still didn't get it).
By the Numbers is the second book in the endearing Southern Charm Series. The term Southern Charm refers to the old Bed and Breakfast that is being restored by chef Dakota Mitchell and hotel scion Samuel Ashford on the Florida Gulf Coast. We met and fell in love with Dakota and Samuel in the first book, Rules of the Chef. Now it’s Sully’s turn to star in a book and find love. Sully is the contractor who is remodeling the aging plantation home that is the Southern Charm. When he volunteers to pick up at the airport Samuel’s best friend and hotel chain CPA Chandler, he gets more than he expected, in many ways. Chandler suffers from debilitating OCD, the result of growing up in the home of a hoarder (yes, like you see on the reality TV series) but Sully is able to ground Chandler and see through the neurotic rituals that govern Chandler’s life and find the sweet, sexy man underneath. Chandler and Sully seem to have a quick start on a relationship but then things begin to roll out of control with the arrival of Samuel’s distrustful father, the head of the hotel chain that owns half of the Southern Charm, and the discovery of financial shenanigans over a long period of time that threatens the future of the B&B. A hidden staircase is just part of the unexpected findings that may lead to either a revival of the old building or a decision to tear it down and leave Dakota’s restaurant and the rest of the town to go down along with it. I love this series but you can read this book as a standalone or as part of the series. If you read it alone you may miss out on some of the character building references but Ms Dennis has left enough information intact that the story is still full blown. And besides, once you read this one you are going to want to go back and read Rules of the Chef as well as the next stories in the series. A sweet story in a delightful gay romance series.
I liked this book a little better than the first. it didn't feel as slow as the previous book did. Although there were multiple times during the book when I felt like they were wasting time talking abt or explaining crap that was boring and unimportant. Chandler suffers from severe OCD and a number of phobias such as germophobia and Claustrophobia. Sully is an out and proud construction company owner who has no problem with Chandlers condition which is hard to believe but I'll roll with it. It really bothered me that Chandlers BFF Samuel was so critical and not understanding of Chandlers illness. He has no control over it and no one is more annoyed with it than the person suffering. so I wish Samuel was a better friend to him. There was a minor character in this book named Reece who is a landscape designer who is apparently from Northern California and in the book Sully says he has an accent and says Hella and Hecka a lot. But every time it was used it would be in the wrong context and it was SO ANNOYING bc it made Reese sounds retarded! Hella isn't an abbreviation of "a hell of a.." but that's how it was used in the book. So annoying! I'm hoping that when Reese gets his own book they actually use the NORCAL lingo correctly. But i liked the book overall. .. hopefully in the future all of the unnecessary extra stuff is going to be removed. oh! There was also a case of gay bashing in this book against chandler that was never resolved or taken care of. Chandler never even told Sully who it was or what happened. That is a major issue that was left unresolved in this book and that bothers me. Mostly bc the last book had some unresolved issues too. I'm not sure why such a big thing was just forgotten abt. .
Second in the Southern Charm series about sexy gay men turning around an old hotel and restaurant in the Southern Eastern Coast. In this story we get as sexy single construction worker (and business owner) Sullivan ‘Sully’ Tarleton who falls for the new owner's best friend Chandler Braddock who is down south for a little while so he can clean out the accounting mess. Chandler has severe OCD problems which has kept him single as well as an eternal virgin becasue he can't be touched or not clean so it makes diryt sweaty sex impossible. This was more then a little sad. I really got mad during the gay hate crime beating that Chandler has to deal with, and even more mad when he just tries to hide it. We never find out anything about the poisoning of Sam from the first book, so I am stopping the series here. There was something missing in the story to keep my attention, so I finished this short story and I officially quit the series. I guess I'll never know who tried to kill Sam. I'm going to just guess the jealous waiter. 161 pages and second in the series 2 stars
I really enjoyed this second book in the series. Looking forward to the next and to finding out who is causing all the trouble at the Charms. Favourite character in this book Sully although I wanted to give Chandler a positive Mother image as well. Character I wanted to smack upside the head? Reece for his cavalier treatment of Mal. Character I liked least of all? Samuel's Dad. Nuff said! All in all I hope it's not long to the next.
This is the Second Book in the Southern Charms Series. I think in order to really understand it you need to read them in order. There are a couple small ongoing storylines and the major storyline of the renovation really does connect the series, plus if you don’t read the first one you won’t know too much about the other characters.
In By the Numbers, Chandler has agreed to come to help Samuel organize the mess of files and help figure out what the big financial issues are, especially why the restaurant is in the red when it’s always a sell-out. Chandler has extreme OCD, claustrophobia, germophobia, asthma, anxiety, panic attacks, you name the neurosis the poor man probably has it. Though he knows it will be physically and emotionally draining on him he does it for Samuel. He is a great friend, though I was a little miffed at how Samuel wasn’t quite as accommodating and considerate to Chandler since Chandler was really doing such a big thing flying there, accepting a ride from a stranger, not having a kitchen to prepare his own food etc. This was a major step for Chandler and I adored him for it.
What isn’t there to like about Sully. A big, sexy construction worker with a heart of gold, considerate, thoughtful loving, sexy as hell. Oh yeah, he is my kind of man. Where can I get a Sully? I loved how he caught onto Chandlers issues so quickly and was so kind and considerate to help him.
The ongoing storyline is still good though, I was hoping some things from the last one would be addressed and tied up in this one. I do like the ongoing renovation and can’t wait to see the outcome of the beautiful Southern Charm. To me she is a character as much as the people are.
I really, really liked this lot. I absolutely loved Chandler. I swooned over Sully and I actually loved his campy gay t-shirts. My only real issue is that once again there was a smaller plot that to me wasn’t ever addressed. I can’t say much more about that without spoilers. I truly love this series and can’t wait to see what happens with Reece in the next one and how the Southern Charm is progressing!
If you like ongoing series, beautiful locations, lots of sexy unique men, OCD, campy t-shirts, construction workers, a fun, sweet contemporary romance with lots of characters and the hottest hand-jobs I’ve read in a long time, plus some sweet sensual man-sex, this is definitely for you. Oh! Don’t forget the yummy food! I received a free copy of this book through MMgoodbookreviews for an honest review http://mmgoodbookreviews.wordpress.com/
I preferred this story to the first one. I don’t know if it was just because I found Chandler’s OCD so interesting but the story seemed more eventful. I do know that I definitely liked both Sully and Chandler better than Samuel and Dakota (from the first book). Actually I enjoyed getting the continued story of Dakota and Samuel in the background of this story and by the end I liked the two of them a lot more than I had previously. I love series that include the characters from earlier books.
There isn’t much sex in this book, which absolutely made sense because Chandler isn’t the sort of character to just dive into something without serious consideration. He’s also a virgin. A virgin with a hell of a lot of learning from the bible of blowjobs – Cosmo magazine. I think one of my favourite scenes is when he explains the techniques he is using as he gives Sully a hand job.
FiveStars Ah Chandler… I love his character. Despite his “quirks” he is a tender, gentle person who wants to find a way through his issues. He works incredibly hard to minimize himself, which was hard to read about. I loved how accepting Samuel was of him. I also really like how they call each other by their “nicknames.”
Sully is written to great detail. I can totally see him in my head, which makes for a much better experience for the reader. He is strong, steady, patient, kind, and sounds HOT!
The relationship is somewhat shaky, due to Chandler’s issues, but I love, love, love their relationship. I also really like how Samuel steps in and helps them too. Everyone around them wants their relationship to succeed.
I can’t wait for issues that arise in this book to unfold in the following stories. I really hope things start to resolve, because this book left a lot of questions for the reader.
I was given this in return for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.
This is the second story in this Southern Charm Series. I find these stories absolutely enchanting. The characters Chandler and Sully were very interesting, well written and thoroughly developed. The relationship between them was fun, sexually charged and moved along at a nice pace. This incorporation of characters from the previous story was wonderful and I think may have set the scene for book three. This is a charming cast of characters in a wonderful setting that thanks to this author, I've had the terrific opportunity to visit. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK AND THIS SERIES!!!
I like this book a lot better than the previous one! As a germaphobe to an extent myself I understand all the bottles of hand sanitizer everywhere, even traveling with it! Love this couple and can't wait until I read the next book. The only problem I had with this was the kiss at the airport.
