E.C. Glynn's debut novel is phenomenal. The character development was brilliant. I really enjoyed how dynamic and multifaceted each of the main characters were. I constantly found myself questioning the morals, the "good" and the "bad" of each of them and loved how this highlighted real world scenarios where no one person is perfect in every way (or evil in every way).

The multifaceted characters really helped create and advance a plot that was not predictable, but engaging, and made it difficult to put the book down.

Glynn's prose is beautiful. It strikes a delicate balance between accessibility and sophistication. The narrative invites readers to immerse themselves in the vivid characters and a compelling plot, while those with more of a literary background can engage with the use of language and imagery and appreciate the thoughtful word choice that was weaved seamlessly into the novel.

My favourite thing about Heretic Behaviour is the religious undertones. Religious persecution is a key theme as Mila is hunted as a sacrifice by the church to the god king Midas. But the links back to religion, power, questioning behaviours of authority, in the real world are thought provoking and handled with a great maturity. These may be subtle to some readers but to others they may offer an insightful and unique way to affirm questioning of certain upbringings.

"The ones that are truely enlightened don't give a rat's arse about enforcing that onto someone else. They lead by example, content within their own knowledge that others will find their way to the correct path if that is what the god intends."

Thank you for the ARC and for giving me the opportunity to fall in love with a fantasy/romance book.

I need a minute. Excuse me.

What a banger! Elyse manages to create a fantastical world filled with questions. It’s a thought provoking powerhouse opening up internal discussions surrounding morals, ethics, religion and belief systems.

Mila is a powder keg FMC, she is in survival mode, hunted by the church, enslaved by the Devine and exploited for capitalism. I loved this story, it’s a breath of fresh air in the genre, it’s so easy to read but keeps the plot complex and engaging… (annnnd omggg the slow burrrrrrn!). I’m so excited for the next instalment! Thank you for the opportunity to read this ARC!

How is this a debut book? I kept asking myself this question the entire time I was reading Elyse Glynn's Heretic Behaviour, Book 1, in her Secrets of the Demons series, releasing on December 1st. The story was not just intense, but it was told with such power that it captivated me from the first sentence of the prologue till the last one in the epilogue.

"The elite are always heretics when it suits them. Divine obedience is for the poor."

Oh, the truth in those words...It takes two sentences to completely deconstruct an entire system based on pre-learned "truths" founded in fear and complete surrender. Who are the divine ones? And who are the heretics? The lines are blurred, the myths are more than myths, and the teachings are tools to instil power and fear.

In a world where music and laughter are seen as acts of heresy, where the Church rules with iron fists, where true knowledge of the past is reserved for those in power, people still try to get on with their lives, keeping their heads down. In this grim world, those deemed as demons are hunted, persecuted and ultimately, killed. Or, more precisely, sacrificed at the hands of the God-King Midas. This is the world Mila lives in. Hunted for years because of her powers deemed as demonic, living a life of fear and terror. But Mila's light won't easily be distinguished. Her will to survive is a light in a world of darkness. Even when put in the direst situation and used by Princess Jezebel, Mila keeps going. She never stops searching for a way out, never losing hope. Could her hopes be seen and fulfilled by a ruthless, greedy Cristopher Culis, heir to the Artor Trading company? And is there more to him than meets the eye?

Elyse has woven a story powerful and dark, a story of a world filled with pre-instilled hatred towards those who are different, deep-seated in religious hypocrisy, slavery, and hungry for power. A story with an FMC who is smart and knows how to survive, a villain you will love to hate, an MMC with Captain Jack Sparrow vibes, and so many hidden layers. A story to make you question the world around you. A story so complex and intricate that you will enjoy exposing its mysteries and secrets. A story you need to read and experience.

Thank you so much to the author for this ARC and this is my honest review

This book had me hooked immediately.
Mila’s ability to read the energies of living things was so intriguing to me.
I also really enjoyed how each of the characters were flawed and you could see both light and dark within them.
This book is so captivating, the dynamics between characters, the religious and mythological tone, the power dynamics, and the storytelling.
I absolutely devoured this book and loved it.
I absolutely love chapter titles!

A solid fantasy debut with a quick, easy-to-read flow and a unique twist on the Midas myth. The worldbuilding is intriguing, and the plot keeps you engaged—but fair warning: the central romance features a slave/master dynamic.

To be clear, the love interest did not enslave the main character, does not harm them, and actually rescues them from a megalomaniac abuser. The love interest refuses to even initiate anything romantic until their power dynamic is more equal and actively tries to free them. The unfortunate part? The safest and fastest way to get them out of danger was to buy them, which… just raises the question: why even write a romance with this kind of dynamic in the first place?

It’s very reminiscent of the early Celaena/Chaol tension in Throne of Glass, where feelings develop despite a fraught power imbalance. That’s ultimately what cost this book a star for me.

Still, I’m interested to see how the author grows from here—it’s a strong start, and I’ll be keeping an eye on what comes next.

After reading all of Sarah J. Maas’ books this past year, I was looking for another fantasy novel to sweep me off my feet. I read the ARC of “Heretic Behaviour” and was not disappointed! I was quickly drawn in to Mila’s story and interested in the different characters. I was thrown for a loop after a couple unexpected plot twists and a BIG cliffhanger at the end, leaving me eager for book #2. Looking forward to reading what comes next from E.C. Glynn!

If you held a mirror up to society, what would you see reflected?

“The elite are always heretics when it suits them.”

Personally, I feel like the themes in this book reflect a lot of what has been seen repeatedly in society over centuries - hypocrisy, and belief being used as justification for atrocities. This is what drew me to this book! The themes are heavy (TW: sexual slavery, abuse, persecution), but I enjoyed it because it made me contemplate the world and how we treat others.

The characters were really interesting, morally grey, and definitely multidimensional. I thought it was well-paced and written and I was thoroughly invested from page 1! I highly recommend this book to anyone who loved to hate Prince Joffrey and Ramsey Bolton from GoT, you’ll get some similar feelings with a few of these characters 😅

I will never stop recommending this book!

Fave Quote: "If she'd hurt you again, I would have regretted not acting to save you.'"

This is Heretic Behaviour book one in The Secrets of Demons series I came across  this author in a Facebook group I am admin in & had to give this book a read this book was something  else, To be honest I was a little worried about reading this knowing that it's quite religion-focused & that isn't my style at all but to be honest I did enjoy the storyline. The world building  was actually incredible & the characters development I did enjoy. I did tho wish there was more smutt 🤭 as I'm so used to reading books with smutt I felt it was leading up to something good but then just never happened, otherwise I thoroughly enjoyed it.😅 So we have our main FMC Mila who is has spent years trying to  stay hidden to escape the powerful Church of Midas from realising she’s a demon. Then  Mila is  caught & is to be sacrificed to appease the God-King. But the only thing that saves her is Princess Jezebel who is another MFC & seriously she is so  unchanged like girl are you good.. 🤣 but out of spite of just being bored & needing a pet to play with she chains Mila up like a dog "literally" & keeps her to amuse herself. Mila remains  determined to find an escape out of this mess. When the main MMC  merchant Prince Christopher Culis  arrives & takes an interest in Mila & buys her off the Princess for his own needs, Mila's  plan for escaping gets upended &  she isn't sure  she can trust this man or will he be her happy ending. I seriously was hating this man one minute  then loving him the next.. 😬There are also some great side characters in this book too, each of them adding more depth to this story.. Also we can't go past the  cliffhanger  that happens at the end of this book so I'm  actually intrigued to see what happens with mila and culis in book 2.  This was actually  a great dark fantasy story. I do recommend just giving it a read.

OKAY WOW. This maybe long, so grab your popcorn.🍿

I just want to start off with, this book was fucking beautiful! Idk how this is a debut book, but i loved it. I can’t believe its over so quickly and on a massive cliff hanger… LIKE CMONNNNN?!?

This book does have religious views/demons portrayed in a way that kept me so intrigued. As a former catholic college girly this had me indulging in this. The political and hierarchy was spot on and made me think a little deeper about “good” and/or “evil” when it came to the characters in this book. The worldbuilding was beautifully written as well as the characters development. Whilst there was many trips that felt like little story’s of their own it all connected and blended really well! I also thought i had it figured out and could predict what was going to happen but then a good ol’ plot twist would happened and i was overly engaged, kicking my feet and giggling at times but also gripping my kindle so hard whilst forgetting ingredients when making dinner for myself bc i couldnt put it DOWN!😂 i am the type of person who thoroughly enjoys a bit of spice in their book i felt as though i was edged the whole time… didnt actually mind it though🤷🏽‍♀️

Im actually not going to give much away but if youre into;

-Religious politics with Demons and Gods✅
-imprisonment, slavery, sacrifices and escaping✅
-Forbidden Romance✅
-Forced proximity ✅
-All kinds of different belief’s✅
-Adventurous✅

Then honestly i think you’ll enjoy this book too!

Some of my favourite quotes from the book are:

“Whatever we have to do to survive”

“Are you actually from hell, little demon?”

Plus some more that are in my highlights from this book.

FMC Mila, girl nothing could ever kill you, i believe the sheer determination and will power you have is outstanding.

Jezebel, count ur fkin days

Mr Culis, i stg you better have a plan.

Im officially already counting down the days until the next book. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it truly was executed very well.

“The elite are always heretics when it suits them. Divine obedience is for the poor.”

Elyse Glynn’s debut novel has smashed it out of the park. Heretic Behaviour is a story filled with secrets, betrayal, and the high-stakes of living in a world where the heretic behaviours are condemned. The world building and character development is phenomenal, leaving the reader questioning the morals of the realm, and who (and what) is really ‘good’ and ‘evil’. It explores how the elite pick and choose behaviours to suit them, and how, despite condemned behaviours being frowned upon equally, dominant groups will push their own agenda to promote their cause.

The writing is absolutely fantastic. It is mature, yet playful, highlighting the personality of each character through their speech and internal dialogues. There was a point in time where I thought Princess Jezebel had finally begun to soften to Mila, and in the next moment that was viciously taken away. This kind of character development and presentation was reflected throughout the book across all characters and added a dimension of unknown and intrigue. The spice is minimal, but this book truly doesn’t need it. The plot is fantastic, and I became so attached to the relationship development between characters that I didn’t feel the need for steamy scenes.

I absolutely love Mila as a character. When faced with the threat to her survival, she has to make decisions that go against everything she stands for to stay alive. Glynn somehow makes us feel all of this, and I had literal chills down my spine at several points throughout the story when Mila’s very existence came way too close to call. The connection built between the characters and their relationships was done so well, and it just enhanced the reading experience tenfold.

Thank you so much to the author for the ARC of this book. I will read this book again and again, and I can’t wait to see what you write next! ✨

I admit that while I was excited to review this book, I was a little concerned by the blurb having come from a background with religious trauma. However, from the moment I started this book, I was in love.

I am EXTREMELY picky. There are very few books I fall completely in love with, let alone become utterly obsessed with, so when I say I LOVE and am OBSESSED with this book, I need you to know how rare a thing this is.

Firstly, the writing is incredible. Informal enough that it is easy to read, but also formal enough to satisfy the style I miss from when I was a teen. The author writes so well and has an excellent grasp of how to construct a story.

The characters delightfully confuse me. Do I hate them? Like them? Feel sorry for them? All of the above? Each of the main characters is fully fleshed out and read as complexly as a regular person does. No one is all good, and is rarely all bad, and while some motivations may still be hidden from us, we do get a glimpse of what causes these characters to behave how they do.

The storyline itself sucked me in from the first page. The wall of text I would send the poor author as I read each night was evidence enough of how engrossed I became. I am usually one to guess plot lines so quickly so was overjoyed to have been surprised in the last few pages of this book. While we do not yet have all the answers, we do have enough to satisfy our curiosity and stoke our desire for book 2.

Honestly, I could rave all day long. I am so genuinely and utterly thrilled to have finally found a book to enthral me after many many months. I cannot recommend Heretic Behaviour enough.

It’s fantasy with a hint of intrigue, a slice of sloooooow burn romance, and a sprinkle of commentary on the world at large.

And finally, because it amuses me to do so, I leave you with my fave quote from the entire book.

“….. and Bruce…”

One of the best things about being a reader is happening upon a debut author that has written a story unlike anything you've read before. The characters, world building and plot in Heretic Behaviour feel wholly original but absolutely relateable and complex.

⚡️Incredible world building
⚡️Multifaceted characters
⚡️Court intrigue
⚡️Religious persecution
⚡️Debut Author!

Mila faced with persecution doesn't fit the cookie cutter Badass FMC I often read, but has an inner strength born from a life lived in fear. Her 'cowardess' is learnt and instilled from birth and her personal growth throughout is inspiring. Culis, raised in toxicity and abuse, fights against the nature of his nurture and shows that the face shown to the world isnt always indicative of what is deep inside. And Jezabel, a female villian which is so fun, is someone you love to hate and hate to feel sorry for. Her character is so complex and rich, she felt so real.

And under the thrilling character driven plot is an incredible tapestry of religious indoctrination and persecution. Ive got to say i think this may be one of my favourite things about the book. I've read a few books that have this as a theme but none has felt so raw and realistic and I think the reason is the author has a personal history with this subject. Although this is a fantasy it felt like it holds up a mirror to ours, and ourselves; challenging what we believe and why we believe it.

Overall, it was just a brilliant read. And the fact that this is a debut author is amazing. For something so rich and complex this read is absolutely relatable and accessible. This has epic high fantasy vibes and is perfect for those with a long history of fantasy but at the same time, is written in a way that would be appropriate for those new to the fantasy genre. I can not wait to see where Glynn takes this series in the future and what else she comes up with!!!

What an incredible honour to be chosen to be an ARC reader. If you don’t like cliffhangers possibly wait for the sequel 🤞🏻 It was a little slow to start, as most fantasy books it can take a bit to understand the world and the rules and where the story takes place. I had to google many things and my vocabulary has definitely grown. Definitely read the triggers as there is definitely a power imbalance and acts of slavery where the FMC is made to do some tough/uncomfortable things to read. There are so many little twists and turns that when I thought I had an inkling about where the story was going, it went somewhere different and kept me on my toes. The characters are well written and everyone has a purpose. The last few chapters had my squealing or jumping from my seat as things started to unfold and SOME of my questions were answered. The ending and epilogue though really tied it together and gave me more questions and makes me so keen for this story to continue and see just how our FMC continues to grow but also what she uncovers about herself. It felt like a slow burn however I’m interested to see how it evolves without giving spoilers. There is a dramatic reveal at the end which I did NOT expect at all and again has turned the story in a different direction, being from a different POV which makes me have more questions.

How this is a debut novel, I'll never know - it is flawless.

We follow Mila, a demon condemned to death, saved at the last second by an unhinged princess whose whims lie on a knife's edge, only to then be sold into a form of slavery to capture her own kind for a profit. Her new master - the enigmatic and morally grey Christopher Culis.

With false gods, demon sacrifices and lies and deceit at every turn, people live in fear, unbalanced and decaying from the Church's rule.

Elyse has a magical way with words, so as she weaves politics and religion into the main themes, it's incredibly engaging and absorbing. Her world building is second to none. As the pages turn and you fall further into the story, you are introduced to many players, all as important as each other. Though it's Mila's unfolding and sometimes begrudging relationship with Christopher that really intrigues the reader, pulling them into the world completely.

Did I mention this is a book not to be missed??

I don't want to give too much away, because you deserve to discover this on your own - but if you enjoy:

- slow burn
- strong and sassy MFC
- forbidden romance
- enemies to (almost) lovers
- politics and religion
- betrayals
- a princess we love to hate
- demon slavery
- morally grey MMC

Then you can't miss this - I mean it,  you should not pass this one over...

In a vivid and well-imagined world, one woman fights to survive contending with the strict rules set by God himself.
Colourful players abound in this book, each with their own agenda adding to the tension. The setting itself is nicely fleshed-out and interesting, though a couple of the place/group names are a little to close to reality to obscure the critique. This does match the dedication but is slightly distracting for a reader with a background in Christianity.
Whilst the book features some 'spice', nothing graphic or gratuitous is depicted 'on-screen' and it flows with the story.
Glynn's writing style is conducive to binge-reading and the chapters do encourage a reader to keep going, to discover what happens next. The language is approachable, with very few 'jargon' terms to learn, making it easy for the reader to slip into her world. The hints and exposition of in-world lore leaves you wanting more.
Overall, this book is a tantalising first step in to the world of Heretic Behaviours. I'm looking forward to what is to come.

Thank you SO MUCH to the author for trusting me with an early copy of this book.

I LOVED this one. I absolutely devoured it. I was hooked from the first page and I thoroughly enjoyed getting lost in this world.

Mila is such a powerful main character. She’s strong and vulnerable and full of fire and passion and life. I fell in love with her so quickly and couldn’t help but root for her.

I really love Culis. He’s…gosh, he’s such a loveable rogue. I was so drawn into Mila’s story that I found myself hurt alongside her every time he let her down. But my gosh, he makes up for it in so many ways. He’s FASCINATING to read about.

There’s an abundance of wonderful side characters in this book too, each of them adding more depth and life and love to this story.

The God-King’s secret blew my dang mind and I am SO excited to see where this goes in possible sequels.

4.5 ⭐️

a world where demons are hunted, corrupt religious figures are in power and a morally grey mmc with a soft heart for demons, well one in particular anyways 👀

i cannot fathom that this is a debut fantasy book, i was so hooked in from just the prologue. The high stakes court, the god king and jezebel, the unique rules of heretical behaviours. The entire story is written in such a captivating way that i couldn’t put it down. The world building is so good too, i was playing a movie in my head the entire time. Not only did i enjoy the plot and dystopian world but the characters!?!

Mila is such a courageous and strong minded woman, she will do anything to survive. She goes to earths ends to protect her friends and fellow demons, even if that means sacrificing herself and putting herself in dangers way.Christoper Culis, where do i start, for the first like 200 pages i HATED him but by the end you just can’t help but love him, he definitely has his faults but his past, need to protect and overcome this corrupt religious world is so intriguing. Also his confidence!! you can’t think of Culis and not love how he carries himself in every scene.

this book releases tomorrow, DECEMBER 1st!!
I definitely recommend it.

HOW DO PEOPLE COME UP WITH THESE IDEAS!? Absolutely amazing E.C. Glynn.. how is this your first book!? I loved it!
It was easy to read and who doesn’t love more than one love interest!?

If I’m being critical.. I feel like it could have been split into two books and I would have happily read both. I was fascinated how the religious undertones were woven into the storyline and a little disappointed when it moved away from this but also loved the second part where a more romantic storyline was explored. GIVE ME MORE!

I hate when I guess the ending of a book.. and honestly if I wasn’t already hooked.. the shock of the last chapter would have sealed the deal 👌🏻

I NEED to know what happens! I’m hoping the next one isn’t too far away 😬

Heretic Behaviour was an easy 5 star read that really took me by surprise!! I found it so interesting to read a book that neatly discusses religion and politics in a fantasy setting… it was just such an intriguing read and I was spellbound the whole time!

This book does not read like a debut - it’s insanely well written with beautiful character development, twists and turns and witty dialogue.

Featuring humans with demon powers that are persecuted for being different, a merchant set to take advantage of that, a crazy (hot) princess, King Midas who demands tributes, priests and the cat test… surely you’re intrigued? 🤭

I must admit I’m a bit of a Jezebel fan and I worry what that says about me (she just needs someone to love her and I could be her “pet” whilst we work that out 🤣)… the opening chapters hit hard from the get to and it doesn’t ease up the whole read. ♥️

Ahhhh okay y'all so I was lucky enough to get to read this!!! Thank you so much to E.C. Glynn for writing this incredible book!
The story follows Mila, a demon in a very non-demon friendly world. We follow her journey from being about to be sacrificed, to being enslaved, to potentially finding a family and learning that maybe it is possible for her to find a place in her world. Her character progression throughout the book is so inspiring and the characters we meet along the way are enthralling.
As someone who has childhood traumas related to a church, I really sympathized with Mila's story and I can't wait to see what happens next!

Listen, I was skeptical at first! E.C.Glynn’s tone and pacing is more of a Sarah J Maas than an N.K. Jemisin (who I’d just finished reading so that’s where my brain was!) so it took me a minute to adjust BUT THEN I GOT SUCKED IN and THOROUGHLY ENJOYED all the plot twists, the delicious characters, the commentary on religious institution, the tantalizing romance, the interesting magic system. The giant devastating cliffhanger is a promise of more to come (it’s also INFURIATING) and I’m looking forward to the next instalment!

Wow...

This is one of those books that you finish reading and feel absolutely lost afterwards because it is so enthralling, so thought-provoking, and so completely unique. Have you ever picked up a book and thought - this is really going to be something? Because that's how I feel about this one.

The world EC Glynn has created is incredibly rich, and her characters had me absolutely invested. It had the perfect mix of emotion, humour, and action. This book is so beautifully written, I cannot wait to see what happens next. The only downside is that I may likely remain lost until the series is complete!

Overall, a great, interesting, and relevant novel from a debut author which highlights some of the terrible injustices and prejudice that religion can bring to a society - but how when a few people stand and say "this is wrong" that change can begin to take place.

The characters were interesting in their own way but I wish we got a little more of the other demons. I understand why it wouldn't quite have worked in this particular novel but I'm hopeful for the sequel! I did have some trouble with the relationships between characters. Their emotions, interactions, and responses seemed a bit choppy and, unfortunately, I didn't feel any chemistry between the FMC and the MMC.

I'm looking forward to seeing what's next and the fallout from the ending!

This debut book from E.C. Glynn had me hooked immediately. The FMC Mila is wonderful and entirely relatable!! King Midas's daughter is beyond ruthless but is also highly complex. The MMC is a fun puzzle to figure out! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the world! The way this addresses a fanatical religion and the consequences of that fanaticism was beautifully done. I consumed it within 24 hours, I just could not put it down!!

This was such a well written book with an intriguing concept that I have never read before which was so refreshing!
I think this book will be a little polarising for the romantasy readers as a true slow burn that is very plot heavy but don’t let that put you off reading!!

I think what makes this book so good is how the characters are true representations of how multifaceted people are. It doesn’t encompass good vs evil so much as exploring moral transgressions and the way people are conditioned to believe what is right and wrong.

I really enjoyed Mila. Being in her head and navigating for world with her was fascinating, especially with the added benefit of her gifts. Jezebel was a fun person to dislike with her entitled and bratty behaviour and the disregard she has for literally every other person in existence. Culis is an interesting character, I like how his backstory was explored through the lens of his father and not told by him.

The ending?! I seen half of it coming and was still upset by it!

The plot twist at the end was *chefs kiss* and it’s made me so hungry for book two! I can’t wait to explore more of that duo and how they came to be!! I think older brother may have some jealousy issues….

Thank you so much to Elyse for allowing me to read this early! I thoroughly enjoyed it! This is my honest opinion.
