“It’s too late,” he said.

“What do you mean?” Kale asked, clutching her shawl tightly around her shoulders.

“It’s too late,” he repeated simply. “They’ve come.”

That was when Kale’s world collapsed. Caught up in treason and murder, she doesn’t know whether to trust the person who dragged her into this in the first place, or the people hunting them both.

And there is someone stirring in the shadows, someone who has watched at a distance for years. The forces are moving, but into whose favour?

It seems like everyone demands Kale’s capture. Why? There is only one who knows.

Lara Whatley is a creative from Southern Ontario. Raised on a healthy dose of fairytales and the outdoors she has a head full of stories and art projects. She indie published her first book at 15, and has since written three more.

I received this book from Goodreads First Reads.
Lara Whatley is a debut author, and for a debut author, I found this book pretty fantastic. I think the target audience is best for a really advance 3rd grader to definitely a 6th grader, but maybe a 7th grader. The only reason I say this is that one of the very few flaws I felt there was in this book is that the conversations were unrealistic. Not in the sense that one wouldn’t have that conversation, but in the sense that the words used were smaller and easier to understand. That is fine for someone trying to build their vocabulary, but for people who have a well rounded vocabulary and are looking for a more advanced book, The Last Pages just isn’t the book for you.
Plot
The exposition in this book was short because just like the rest of the book, it brimmed with action. Everything was boom, boom, boom. There wasn’t a moment I wasn’t hanging off the edge of my seat begging to know the mystery of what would happen next. The only drawback with that was that Kale didn’t always make the most realistic of choices. Trusting a man she just met and following him back to his house is just not something that I can see happening, especially for the time period. All the same, it did help to move along the plot and, of course, the action, so I let it slide. Kale meets Leon, who obviously knows more than he’s telling, but by the time she realizes he may not be who he says, it’s too late. She’s already knee deep in more than she can handle. She’ll just have to deal with living the life of a slave, or will she?
Characters
Kale- Kale is gullible. I suppose that’s not really a bad thing, I just find myself to enjoy strong, kick-butt female leads. She does grow to be wiser in the book, but she never really loses that little kid innocence of trusting everyone.
Leon- Leon is truly a mystery. He never gave away all his secrets, and at first, he doesn’t care for anybody but himself. As the book goes on, he does begin to change and start to care for others well-being.
Colum- Colum enters The Last Pages in about the middle of the book, and yet he is an incredibly important character. Colum, too, has many secrets of his own he doesn’t care to share, and he makes a great reveal at the end of the book shocking just about everyone.
Rating Revealed
I give this a 4 star rating, basically because although it was action packed, and soothed my romantic heart, it wasn’t really written for my age bracket. The Last Pages had me hooked from the beginning to the cliffhanger ending. I gobbled this book up in only a matter of hours, despite the different target audience.
Overall
I applaud Lara’s incredible sense of the child-like fascination in a world of magic and adventure. . Her love of writing shone through this work of art. It did have a few minor flaws, but for a younger person those flaws will be almost nonexistent. The Last Pages is one fast paced, wild ride of an adventure that will catch your breath from the moment you begin reading and refuses to give it back until you reach the final page.

After a few words, I found the writing disappeared leaving a vivid story with damp castle walls, conflicted heroines and mysterious heroes. The Last Pages pulls you on a quick ride through a satisfying adventure with a complex ending.

Written as a 14 year old, this book promises to be one of many to follow. The author provides only enough details to keep our imagination creating vivid scenes. Action, dialogue and relationship let readers enjoy a warm tale with just enough villainy to create tension.

I suspect young adult readers will love the story and the way it’s told. Adult readers will also appreciate the story and especially enjoy a glimpse at the mind of a YA author.

More than just a simple story. Enjoy!

This was a great book! I loved the suspense and the idea that it is fantasy with history mixed in it. I felt like I was in the story myself. I cannot wait until the next book because right now the last pages is my favorite book.

Well. Where to begin? The characters were lovely. The descriptions were lovely. I couldn't help but be hooked by the first couple pages. The whole world created in The Last Pages is definitely captivating and magical. The author doesn't waste time, however, and kept me on the edge of my seat the entire two nights it took me to finish this. It was a little short compared to what I'm used to... either that or I just read through it so fast. XD

Here's how I feel about the book:

DNF.

It was a struggle to read this book. I wanted to like it, because the world was interesting, but then the writing was bad and the characters are unpolished. This book needs extensive editing. I know, that was harsh, but I'm being honest here.

The story is fast-paced, but it lacks certain details that will make the story easier to understand. The MC, Kale, lacks emotions and is just too weird. If I became a slave suddenly, without explanations and justification, I would throw a fit. Kale didn't. She accepted her fate too easily. I hate that in characters. Like I said, extensive editing. I have a feeling this story could be a good one, only if it's written properly.

I don't have anything more to say, since I didn't finish reading it.

This is an exciting story of a young girl unwilling on the run with a young man who says he is running from the king.the It is hard to put down as you read of the obstacles they run into as well as a man in a black cloak in pursuit of them.Throughout the story it is implied that it is the girl that is wanted but does not say why.
I cannot wait until the next installment of the story comes out.

Interesting, intriguing, thoughtful mix of historical fiction/fantasy! The descriptions are vivid, and one is never sure where the book is going to go next. It's easy to put one's feet in Kale's shoes, which makes the ending very emotional. So when is the sequel coming out? I have to find out what happens next!!!

Hi all,

So here’s me, many many years after the release of this book. I’d like to say only one thing:

Please don’t read it.

I leave it up here because I am honestly happy for my 14yo self for having the gumption to submit it to publishers and actually get it published—let alone finish the thing.

But it truly is horrendous. It was the means for a lonely 14yo girl in love with fantasy novels to spend her afternoons. I must say while my love of writing has not diminished in the slightest, a continued interest in the literary world has made me profoundly embarrassed of my past work, and works I had thought at the time were quite clever indeed.

If you do read this. Please don’t judge me harshly for it. Or at least understand what it is: an imaginary bed-time story told by a young girl with a big imagination.

I’m no longer that girl, but I do owe her a lot. So I keep this here in memory of her, and hope that some day maybe only I alone will remember these humble writing beginnings.

Young writers… write. Write some more, and maybe for your own sake, seek the help of a professional editor, even if a small publisher is willing to publish your story.

With love,

Lara
