Throughout his public life, Pope Francis had been noted for his humility, emphasis on God's mercy, concern for the poor, and commitment to interfaith dialogue. He was credited with having a humble, less formal approach to the papacy than his predecessors, for instance choosing to reside in the Domus Sanctae Marthae guesthouse rather than in the papal apartments of the Apostolic Palace used by his predecessors. In addition, due to both his Jesuit and Ignatian aesthetic, he was known for favoring simpler vestments void of ornamentation, including refusing the traditional papal mozzetta cape upon his election, choosing silver instead of gold for his piscatory ring, and keeping the same pectoral cross he had as Cardinal. He maintained that the church should be more open and welcoming. He did not support unbridled capitalism, Marxism, or Marxist versions of liberation theology. Francis maintained the traditional views of the church regarding abortion, euthanasia, contraception, homosexuality, ordination of women, and priestly celibacy. He opposed consumerism, irresponsible development, and supported taking action on climate change, a focus of his papacy with the promulgation of Laudato si'. “L’odio, la divisione e la vendetta non fanno che avvelenare la speranza, e ci portano via tutto ciò che invece magari vorremmo difendere, che amiamo.”
Nel giorno della notizia della sua morte, prendo in mano questo suo testamento spirituale, prima autobiografia pubblicata da un pontefice, mentre era ancora in vita.
Di origini piemontesi, nato a Buenos Aires, dal temperamento forte, Francesco era prima di tutto un uomo dalla grande fede.
Tanti gli aneddoti narrati, dai racconti scritti in gioventù e inviati a Borges che li apprezzò molto, agli studi nella scuola tecnica come chimico, al suo essere radicato alle sue origini piemontesi, al suo essere cittadino nell’animo. Un uomo dalle idee rivoluzionarie
“Confondere unità con uniformità è una diabolica tentazione. L’unità non è un simulacro di integrazione forzata né di emarginazione armonizzatrice. Piuttosto, è una diversità riconciliata. L’unità di chi si ascolta e si rispetta è l’unica arma che abbiamo contro la “deforestazione”, e in primo luogo la deforestazione della speranza e della coscienza. La verità, una verità drammatica e urgente, è che oggi abbiamo enormemente bisogno di quella saggezza, di quelle conoscenze, e persino del tesoro doloroso di quelle ferite. Per questo ho detto sommessamente ai giovani dei popoli originari: non rassegnatevi a ciò che sta succedendo. Non rinunciate alla vostra vita e ai vostri sogni. Preparatevi, formatevi, ma per favore, non rinunciate all’eredità dei vostri nonni, dei vostri antenati. Perché il mondo ha terribilmente bisogno di voi, e abbiamo bisogno di voi così come siete. Un racconto che ripercorre tutta la sua vita, un sacerdote, un credente, che ha bisogno della comunità, dell’essere missionario, come dell’aria per respirare.
Sono passati dodici anni dal giorno della sua proclamazione
“C’è una bella espressione nei Fioretti di San Francesco: «Sappi che la cortesia è una delle proprietà di Dio […] e la cortesia è sorella della carità, la quale spegne l’odio e conserva l’amore». Se la realtà che viviamo sa essere violenta e arrogante, vuol dire che c’è bisogno di molta più cortesia: partendo dalle famiglie, partendo da noi.
Era anche questo, semplicemente, il significato del mio «Buonasera» detto a ciascuno dei fratelli e delle sorelle quando, il 13 marzo 2013, mi sono affacciato per la prima volta al balcone di San Pietro come Vescovo di Roma, un vescovo che i mei fratelli cardinali erano andati a prendere quasi alla fine del mondo.”
E adesso?
Siamo un po’ tutti orfani oggi.
Il Signore ha permesso che lui lasciasse questo mondo, il giorno del lunedì dell’Angelo, il giorno in cui Gesù Risorto si manifesta alle donne.
Scrive il curatore, Carlo Musso, alla fine del libro
“Se c’è una parola che la sua figura incarna, che mi è tornata più volte alla mente nel susseguirsi degli incontri e nel procedere del lavoro, insieme all’immagine di un’autentica umiltà, è: avanti! Un uomo nato nel 1936 che, se si volta indietro, è solo per lanciare ancor più avanti lo sguardo.
Allo stesso modo, queste pagine sono state scritte con lo spirito del servizio e con il desiderio appassionato di tramandare due delle cose più durature che gli esseri umani possano lasciare in eredità: radici e ali.”
Abbiamo bisogno di custodire l’insegnamento di Papa Francesco. Il mondo ha bisogno di uomini come lui.
E ora lui veglia su di noi dall’alto. La Chiesa ha bisogno di un uomo rivoluzionario come lui, una Chiesa che sappia andare fino alla fine del mondo.

“Bisogna essere umili, lasciare spazio al Signore, non alle nostre finte sicurezze.
Non è debolezza la tenerezza: è vera forza.
È la strada che hanno percorso gli uomini e le donne più forti e coraggiosi. Percorriamola, lottiamo con tenerezza e con coraggio.
Percorretela, lottate con tenerezza e con coraggio… Io sono solo un passo.”

That’s it? That’s it.

This was probably most 3.5 star book I’ve ever read. The book is…. fine. There is a lot of good stuff in here mixed in with whole chapters of whatever-ness. It’s just not that compelling as a story.
I will say that the part about the repressive government of Argentina and the trauma he underwent (that he had to seek out a full year of psychiatric treatment for) was definitely the most gripping part. That was so heartbreaking.
His theological conviction that God in a word is mercy (and finding strong theological value in Ezekiel 16 because of that) was also super apparent through the whole book. Another thread that is super obvious through is his principle that either we’re brothers by religion or equal by creation - either way we must start from a place of respect and equality when talking to each other.
I also appreciate the chapters about the horrors that Iraq has faced because of ISIS and what Palestine was suffered because of Israel. In fact, Arabs (and explicitly Arab immigrants) are constantly and exclusively portrayed in very positive terms. That was cool.
Plus he says trans women are daughters of God. That’s so fire.

(…) mas a esperança é sobretudo a virtude do movimento e o motor da mudança: é a tensão que une memória e utopia para construir realmente os sonhos que nos aguardam. E se um sonho enfraquece, é necessário voltar a sonhá-lo, sob novas formas, consultando com esperança as brasas da memória.
Pensar combater o mal com o mal significa inevitavelmente construir o pior.
Apenas quem constrói pontes poderá avançar: os construtores de muros acabarão aprisionados pelos muros que eles próprios ergueram.
O ódio, a divisão e a vingança apenas servem para envenenar a esperança e tiram-nos tudo aquilo que talvez queiramos defender, que amamos.
A pior mentira, a maior e mais perigosa, é «a verdade menos um», anotava Lanza del Vasto, uma poliédrica figura de escritor, filósofo, pensador cristão e ativista não-violento contra a guerra e os armamentos nucleares. Um artesão da paz. Não a verdade, mas a sua aparência negociada, a sua distorção cómica ou dramática: uma atitude que torna verosímil o falso, aceitável o erro, que torna arrogante o inepto, sapiente o ignorante, poderoso o incapaz. É Judas o mestre do verosímil. Do mexerico. E o mexerico e o verosímil são os mais desleais adversários da verdade das coisas. Há sempre algo de demoníaco no mexerico e na calúnia.
Quando, acabado de ser eleito, tomei posse do apartamento pontifício, senti dentro de mim distintamente erguer-se um «não». O apartamento papal no terceiro andar do Palácio Apostólico não é luxuoso. É antigo, feito com bom gosto, grande, mas não luxuoso. Porém, no final, é como um funil invertido. É espaçoso, mas a entrada é muito estreita. Entra-se a conta-gotas, e eu, é esta a questão, não posso viver sem gente.
(…) desde rapaz, sempre procurei fugir dos linguareiros, de quem falava dos outros: sempre me pareceu uma doença grave, que anestesia o coração. «Mata mais a língua do que a espada», diz o livro do Sirácida (Sir 28,18), pois o mexerico, a maledicência não é de modo algum uma peculiaridade inocente: é mais uma peste que apenas traz divisão e sofrimento.
Apenas começamos a caminhar se nos dermos conta daquilo que nos falta, porque se pensarmos que não nos falta nada, não progredimos de todo. É esta a proporção a descobrir a cada passo: é necessário caminhar com um pé no âmbito da segurança, em tudo o que adquirimos e assimilámos, mas com o outro a sondar as zonas de risco, que devem ser proporcionadas, e aventurarmo-nos, ir mais além.
Sem risco não se avança. Mas também não se avança muito lançando-nos de uma ravina.
Quando acontecer, não serei sepultado em São Pedro, mas em Santa Maria Maior: o Vaticano é a casa do meu último serviço, não a da eternidade. Irei para o espaço onde agora guardam os candelabros, próximo da Rainha da Paz a quem sempre pedi ajuda e pela qual, no decurso do pontificado, fui abraçado mais de cem vezes.
Os homens e as mulheres não são partes de uma engrenagem mecânica, nem tão-pouco a soma de exigências ou desejos, sem consciência e sem vontade, (…)
Lembra-nos que apagar as diferenças é, no fundo, apagar a humanidade.
É estranho que ninguém se preocupe com a bênção de um empresário que explora as pessoas, e esse é um pecado gravíssimo, ou com quem polui a casa comum, enquanto se escandaliza quando o papa abençoa uma mulher divorciada ou um homossexual.
Ficou agora consagrado que a possibilidade de celebrar segundo o missal pré-conciliar, em latim, deve ser expressamente autorizada pelo Dicastério para o Culto, que apenas a concederá em casos particulares. Pois não é saudável que a liturgia se torne ideologia.
É curioso este fascínio pelo que não se compreende, que parece um tanto oculto e que, por vezes, parece interessar também as gerações mais jovens. Muitas vezes, esta rigidez é acompanhada nas vestes rebuscadas e caras, nos bordados, nas rendas, nos roquetes. Não é gosto pela tradição, mas ostentação de clericalismo, que na verdade não é mais do que a versão eclesiástica do individualismo. Por vezes, estes disfarces escondem desequilíbrios, desvios afetivos, dificuldades comportamentais, um mal-estar pessoal que pode ser instrumentalizado. Durante os meus anos de pontificado, tive de intervir sobre este problema em quatro casos, três em Itália e um no Paraguai: dioceses que aceitavam seminaristas já afastados por outros seminários, e quando isto acontece há habitualmente algo que não corre bem, algo que leva a esconder a própria personalidade em contextos fechados ou sectários.
Um cardeal norte-americano contou-me que um dia se apresentaram a si dois sacerdotes acabados de ordenar, para pedir autorização para celebrar a missa em latim.
«Sabem latim?», perguntou o cardeal.
«Não, mas estudá-lo-emos», responderam os dois jovens padres.
«Então, façam assim», disse o cardeal, «antes de aprenderem latim, observai a vossa diocese e vede quantos migrantes vietnamitas existem: então, estudem em primeiro lugar o vietnamita. Mas quando tiverdes aprendido o vietnamita, considerai também a quantidade de paroquianos de língua hispânica e percebereis que aprender o espanhol vos será muito útil para o vosso serviço. Depois do vietnamita e do espanhol, venham ter comigo e falaremos do latim...»
A migração é sempre um direito duplo: direito a encontrar na pátria as condições para uma existência digna e direito a deslocar-se quando aquelas condições mínimas não existem. No entanto — e não podia deixar de pensar nisso quando regressava de Qaraqosh de automóvel, entre multidões de jovens a quem tinha sido roubado tudo exceto a esperança —, nem diante de infernos como este o mundo tomou consciência desta verdade universal.
A esperança é um valor supremo, e o seu contrário é o inferno já em terra, de tal modo que Dante, significativamente, colocou à porta do inferno a frase «Abandonai toda a esperança, vós que entrais.»

A educação é sempre um ato de esperança que do presente olha o futuro; e, tal como a esperança, é peregrina, pois não pode existir uma educação estática. É um percurso em dois sentidos, um diálogo, que não significa condescendência nem relativismo, e que revela o seu segredo em três linguagens: a da mente, a do coração e a das mãos. A maturidade exige que se pense aquilo que se sente e se faz, que se sinta aquilo que se pensa e se faz, que se faça aquilo que se sente e se pensa. É um coro, uma harmonia que precisa de ser cultivada, antes de tudo, em nós mesmos.

O ódio, a divisão e a vingança apenas servem para envenenar a esperança e tiram-nos tudo aquilo que talvez queiramos defender, que amamos.
A pior mentira, a maior e mais perigosa, é «a verdade menos um», anotava Lanza del Vasto, uma poliédrica figura de escritor, filósofo, pensador cristão e ativista não-violento contra a guerra e os armamentos nucleares. Um artesão da paz. Não a verdade, mas a sua aparência negociada, a sua distorção cómica ou dramática: uma atitude que torna verosímil o falso, aceitável o erro, que torna arrogante o inepto, sapiente o ignorante, poderoso o incapaz. É Judas o mestre do verosímil. Do mexerico. E o mexerico e o verosímil são os mais desleais adversários da verdade das coisas. Há sempre algo de demoníaco no mexerico e na calúnia.
Quando, acabado de ser eleito, tomei posse do apartamento pontifício, senti dentro de mim distintamente erguer-se um «não». O apartamento papal no terceiro andar do Palácio Apostólico não é luxuoso. É antigo, feito com bom gosto, grande, mas não luxuoso. Porém, no final, é como um funil invertido. É espaçoso, mas a entrada é muito estreita. Entra-se a conta-gotas, e eu, é esta a questão, não posso viver sem gente.
(…) desde rapaz, sempre procurei fugir dos linguareiros, de quem falava dos outros: sempre me pareceu uma doença grave, que anestesia o coração. «Mata mais a língua do que a espada», diz o livro do Sirácida (Sir 28,18), pois o mexerico, a maledicência não é de modo algum uma peculiaridade inocente: é mais uma peste que apenas traz divisão e sofrimento.
Apenas começamos a caminhar se nos dermos conta daquilo que nos falta, porque se pensarmos que não nos falta nada, não progredimos de todo. É esta a proporção a descobrir a cada passo: é necessário caminhar com um pé no âmbito da segurança, em tudo o que adquirimos e assimilámos, mas com o outro a sondar as zonas de risco, que devem ser proporcionadas, e aventurarmo-nos, ir mais além.
Sem risco não se avança. Mas também não se avança muito lançando-nos de uma ravina.
Quando acontecer, não serei sepultado em São Pedro, mas em Santa Maria Maior: o Vaticano é a casa do meu último serviço, não a da eternidade. Irei para o espaço onde agora guardam os candelabros, próximo da Rainha da Paz a quem sempre pedi ajuda e pela qual, no decurso do pontificado, fui abraçado mais de cem vezes.
Os homens e as mulheres não são partes de uma engrenagem mecânica, nem tão-pouco a soma de exigências ou desejos, sem consciência e sem vontade, (…)
Lembra-nos que apagar as diferenças é, no fundo, apagar a humanidade.
É estranho que ninguém se preocupe com a bênção de um empresário que explora as pessoas, e esse é um pecado gravíssimo, ou com quem polui a casa comum, enquanto se escandaliza quando o papa abençoa uma mulher divorciada ou um homossexual.
Ficou agora consagrado que a possibilidade de celebrar segundo o missal pré-conciliar, em latim, deve ser expressamente autorizada pelo Dicastério para o Culto, que apenas a concederá em casos particulares. Pois não é saudável que a liturgia se torne ideologia.
É curioso este fascínio pelo que não se compreende, que parece um tanto oculto e que, por vezes, parece interessar também as gerações mais jovens. Muitas vezes, esta rigidez é acompanhada nas vestes rebuscadas e caras, nos bordados, nas rendas, nos roquetes. Não é gosto pela tradição, mas ostentação de clericalismo, que na verdade não é mais do que a versão eclesiástica do individualismo. Por vezes, estes disfarces escondem desequilíbrios, desvios afetivos, dificuldades comportamentais, um mal-estar pessoal que pode ser instrumentalizado. Durante os meus anos de pontificado, tive de intervir sobre este problema em quatro casos, três em Itália e um no Paraguai: dioceses que aceitavam seminaristas já afastados por outros seminários, e quando isto acontece há habitualmente algo que não corre bem, algo que leva a esconder a própria personalidade em contextos fechados ou sectários.
Um cardeal norte-americano contou-me que um dia se apresentaram a si dois sacerdotes acabados de ordenar, para pedir autorização para celebrar a missa em latim.
«Sabem latim?», perguntou o cardeal.
«Não, mas estudá-lo-emos», responderam os dois jovens padres.
«Então, façam assim», disse o cardeal, «antes de aprenderem latim, observai a vossa diocese e vede quantos migrantes vietnamitas existem: então, estudem em primeiro lugar o vietnamita. Mas quando tiverdes aprendido o vietnamita, considerai também a quantidade de paroquianos de língua hispânica e percebereis que aprender o espanhol vos será muito útil para o vosso serviço. Depois do vietnamita e do espanhol, venham ter comigo e falaremos do latim...»
A migração é sempre um direito duplo: direito a encontrar na pátria as condições para uma existência digna e direito a deslocar-se quando aquelas condições mínimas não existem. No entanto — e não podia deixar de pensar nisso quando regressava de Qaraqosh de automóvel, entre multidões de jovens a quem tinha sido roubado tudo exceto a esperança —, nem diante de infernos como este o mundo tomou consciência desta verdade universal.
A esperança é um valor supremo, e o seu contrário é o inferno já em terra, de tal modo que Dante, significativamente, colocou à porta do inferno a frase «Abandonai toda a esperança, vós que entrais.»

A educação é sempre um ato de esperança que do presente olha o futuro; e, tal como a esperança, é peregrina, pois não pode existir uma educação estática. É um percurso em dois sentidos, um diálogo, que não significa condescendência nem relativismo, e que revela o seu segredo em três linguagens: a da mente, a do coração e a das mãos. A maturidade exige que se pense aquilo que se sente e se faz, que se sinta aquilo que se pensa e se faz, que se faça aquilo que se sente e se pensa. É um coro, uma harmonia que precisa de ser cultivada, antes de tudo, em nós mesmos.

February 24, 2025I don’t want to rate this, but I was surprised by how moving Pope Francis’s autobiography was. It’s a lot to get through, but his message is one that I think a lot of people could learn something from, Catholic or not. I think it’s also one that former Catholics would really appreciate. He seems to be a very progressive pope, and he illustrates that here through his dedication to remaining humble (the vow of poverty is something that a LOT of mega-churches and pastors could learn from…), caring for the poor and all kinds of minorities, and insisting that the church continue to grow and evolve rather than stay stagnant. The part about humor being an integral part of life and faith was really touching as well. I remember wondering as a kid if Jesus ever laughed.
Anyway, basically the pope said: trump sucks and you guys should stop worshipping him. (I mean, that’s my interpretation anyway…. lol)

Ler a autobiografia de Francisco não estava de todo nos meus planos, mas com os demais acontecimentos das últimas semanas senti um burburinho de curiosidade para aprofundar-me sobre quem foi Jorge Bergoglio.
E foi uma grande surpresa. Intitulado "Esperança", a autobiografia pega no significado da palavra e de braços dados leva-nos às raízes de Francisco, começando pela história dos seus avós, dos pais até depois concentrar-se no próprio Francisco, desde o nascimento até a alguns eventos do último ano.
Não senti que fosse de todo um livro com foco religioso. Senti este livro mais como uma carta de amor de Francisco ao mundo onde o Papa, através das suas experiências e vivências nos mostra toda a fé que deposita na humanidade. Fé para a construção de uma sociedade mais justa e esperançosa, onde se pretende encaminhar para a diminuição dos conflitos no mundo e união num só propósito de paz.
Acompanhar a vida de Francisco oferece também ao leitor a possibilidade de recordar os conflitos que assolaram as últimas décadas, desde as grandes guerras mundiais, guerras civis e, uma das mais recentes e trágicas, a guerra contra o vírus da COVID-19 que assolou o mundo recentemente.
Uma leitura muito fluída e que vale a pena onde não falta a boa disposição e sentido de humor que conhecíamos de Francisco.

When I read a book, I note sections of excellent writing or thought and this book had an abundance; difficult to summarize. Though not Catholic, I can't help but admire this man and his message. Some of the book is about his family, upbringing, and roots but the parts that stood out were how he used his message and his hopes for the future of our world. It should be required reading for our world leaders.

Danima razmišljam kako da napišem recenziju za autobiografiju osobe kojoj se toliko divim, poštujem i smatram iznimno bitnim za ovaj ludi svijet.
Papa Franjo piše onako kako govori, jednostavno, jasno, direktno i ponizno. Mnoge stvari su me oduševile u knjizi, ali dvije stvari su mi se posebice istakle.
Prvo je to što se nije ograničavao i priznavao je da je napravio greške u životu, zbog kojih mu je žao. Nije se u nijednom trenutku pokušao pokazati nedodirljivim, nepogrešljivim ili na neki drugi način iznad nas “običnih smrtnika”.
Druga stvar je povezana sa prethodnom, a to je činjenica da se Papa ispovijedao svakih dva do tri tjedna. Tu je opet pokazao svoju poniznost i izjednačava sebe sa svima nama.
U proteklom periodu nakon njegove smrti, bilo je puno članaka i priloga oko zanimljivosti vezano za život pape Franje. Mnoge informacije se upravo spominju u ovoj knjizi, ali se u knjizi daje dublji kontekst tim informacijama.
Papa Franjo je prvo planirao knjigu objaviti nakon smrti, a ja sam je počeo čitati na Uskrs. Na dan njegove smrti, sam veliki dio dana posvetio čitanju knjige. Tijekom čitanja tog dana imao sam neki poseban osjećaj, kao da mi je umro netko jako blizak i da je knjiga oporuka čovječanstvu.
Ovo nije knjiga samo za vjernike nego za svakoga. Papa daje intiman pristup svojem životu, motivima i razmišljanjima koji su ga vodili kroz papinstvo. Drago mi je da sam imao priliku pročitati ovakvu knjigu, o kojoj ću sigurno jako dugo razmišljati

It’s hard not to love this Pope and this book will not help your resistance. A memoir surrounded with his wisdom, guidance and spiritual insight.
I’d suggest it’s a worthy read for all Christians, regardless of tradition, but to be honest, with the state of the world right now, we should probably all read this.

5 porque aguante el Papa Francisco.
"Ni siquiera un papa se salva por sí mismo".
Lo empecé a leer después de su muerte. Aunque fui bautizada y tomé la comunión, en mi familia no hay prácticas religiosas muy fuertes entonces mi sentido católico es casi nulo. Sin embargo, el Papa Francisco era argentino y nos debería llenar de orgullo que un tipo humilde haya llegado a tanto.
Francisco habla de sus abuelos, de cómo vinieron en un barco de mala muerte desde Italia escapando de Mussolini y da su visión del trato a los inmigrantes en ese momento y ahora, en cada rincón del mundo. Habla de su barrio, de los amigos hijos de inmigrantes, de la escuela, de las travesuras infantiles y hasta de las prostitutas del barrio que después iban a misa con él.
"Las víctimas han de saber que el papa está con ellos. Y que en esto no se va a retroceder ni un solo paso". (Respecto a las víctimas de abuso sexual).
También habla de las víctimas de la Iglesia, les pide perdón y los entiende. Cuenta todo lo que hizo para sacar a esas parias de la Iglesia y también habla de todo lo que hizo en la última dictadura, a cuánta gente escondió y ayudó.
"Estoy viviendo una larga vida, más que la de mis padres, que la de mis hermanos, y, obviamente una vida que el niño que fui nunca se habría ni de lejos imaginado".
El capítulo 17 es hermoso, cuenta cómo fue el cónclave donde fue elegido, todas sus sensaciones, su paz, sus elecciones de vestuario. Y culmina hablando de cómo va a ser su velorio, que lo tenía todo planeado.

"Esperança", a autobiografia de Jorge Mario Bergolio, o Papa Francisco, foi uma leitura muito significativa pois tratou-se de uma leitura conjunta com a minha mãe: ela com o livro físico e eu com o ebook no kobo. Ao longo desta semana, fomos trocando opiniões sobre o que íamos lendo e partilhámos reflexões sublinhadas, o que, inevitavelmente, tornou a leitura muito mais rica. Obrigada, mãe.
O Papa Francisco foi o primeiro pontífice latino-americano da história, assim como este livro, publicado no âmbito das comemorações do Jubileu da Igreja Católica, foi a primeira autobiografia escrita por um Papa no ativo.
Graças à presença de inúmeras fotografias, assim como a um registo escrito amistoso, próximo, íntimo, no qual a humildade se evidencia sem quaisquer recursos a moralismos ou sentimentalismos, o Papa Francisco conduziu-me até ao início do seculo XX, quando os seus avós emigraram de Itália para a Argentina.
A relação com as mulheres da sua vida, nomeadamente com a avó Rosa e a mãe Regina, é apresentada com uma adoração ímpar. Assim como é única a forma como o Papa Francisco se recorda, vividamente, de todas as pessoas que fizeram parte da sua vida, sobretudo as pessoas que, aparentemente, nada têm: os pobres e os marginalizados.
São vários os temas abordados neste livro: a emigração clandestina, a ditadura civil-militar argentina, os desastres nucleares de Hiroshima e Nagasaki, a pandemia, as guerras que alastram no mundo, a arquitetura hostil, a par de referências a livros, músicas clássicas, passando pelo futebol e pelo tango.
Para Papa Francisco, que durante o seu pontífice, cultivou , entre outros, a magnanimidade, a doçura, a humildade, a importância das raizes de cada um de nós, o cuidado, o agradecimento, o perdão, a arte do encontro, manifesta uma preocupação nuclear neste seu livro, nomeadamente a globalização da indiferença e da desconfiança em relação ao outro, atitudes que estão por detrás de todas as guerras.

I loved this book. It touched on so many important world topics from war and peace, immigration, poverty, forgiveness and even abuse within the church. He didn't skirt around topics or stay in the gray zone. He spoke with passion and from the heart. I appreciated his honesty. One quote I really liked, "Only those who build bridges can move forward. Builders of walls end up imprisoned by the walls they themselves have built. Most of all, their hearts become entrapped". I loved hearing his life story all the way from boyhood to being elected Pope.

The book itself was brimming with cultural references and hot takes from our favourite woke pope. But I had to take off one star because the pacing was pretty strange… there was a lot about Pope Francis’ family origins and his early years, then a fair amount about the experience of becoming pope - with not long enough devoted to his fifty years (!!!!!) as a priest and navigating the political difficulties in Argentina.

I read this book hoping to find some sense of hope for our country. I did, sort of but it was hard to find the threads sometimes. This has been such a discouraging few months that I hope my heart was open enough to hear the Pope's words. I particularly enjoyed the autobiographical parts of this book -- it was wonderful to be able to imagine him as a boy or a young man.
The editing was a little lax I think in that there were a lot of sentence fragments but that may be due to the translation of something along that line. It was difficult at some point.

This isn’t what I normally read but “It’s a story of yesterday as much as it is of today.”
Jorge has a fresh/modern take on a lot of what is written in ~the world's most popular book~, possibly because of his experiences as being everything from a strip club bouncer to a pope, and his friendships with communists, revolutionaries, fascists, prostitutes, and many unlikely people. Here are some good takes:
- 1 single day without military spending would save 34 million people. Yet instead, governments choose to increase military spending like never before, and these governments are manufacturing hunger.
- Homosexuality is NOT a crime, it is a human fact. God loves all; “if the lord says everybody - who am I to exclude anybody ?!”
- The position of women in society is a particular form of poverty. The female body is attacked, turned into a commodity, and reduced it to an object. It is a disgrace to our society, a scandal against the gospel.
- Armies March upon the orders of the ruling class; a limited class to which they don’t even belong.
- The number of guns IS proportional to the number of deaths.
- The rich get richer and the poor poorer- stripped of all natural and human resources
- The church needs to demasculinize! The nature of women is greater than the ministry. It is necessary to favor women in every way; “we will give more complete testimony of that God father, and even more is he, mother.”
- trans women are the daughters of god
Pope Francis fulfills his namesake of "God’s jester" with fun anecdotes, tales and jokes.
Lastly: “Without dreams and change and hope, life is suffocating. ALL PEOPLE can change.”

I think every Catholic should read this. I don't always agree with how Pope Francis handles things but reading this gave insight into his motivations. Above all it paints a picture of a very human person who rightly so believes the greater the sinner, the greater deserving of Gods mercy. I've seen a lot of people, and especially people who are gaining financially picking two or three paragraphs out of the book and interpreting the words "sometimes conceal" with "always conceal" or thinking his words were about them. I think that's being uncharitable at the least. I think you have to read the whole thing. God gives every person gifts, and I think he is working with the gifts he was given for the glory of God. I think that is the best any one of us can hope for ourselves and for others.
Here is a person with a great affection for, and spent his life in service of the poor, sick, and marginalized. Pray for Papa Francisco and for the Church! Viva Christo Rey!

Ne znam... Valjda me takve knjige uvijek dopadnu u nekom prijelomnom trenutku. Autobiografija pokojnog pape Franje stigla mi je baš dok je bio teško bolestan. Držao sam je po strani, nadajući se da će se oporaviti. A onda sam je počeo čitati – kako je on i zamislio – nakon njegove smrti, kao neku vrstu oporuke.
Rijetko čitam autobiografije. Djeluju mi kao da zavirujem u tuđi dnevnik. Ali Franjo odmah u uvodu napiše da autobiografija nije pogled unatrag, nego putokaz naprijed. I to mu vjeruješ.
Čitaš, i jasno ti je – nije htio pisati samo o sebi, nego o svemu što ga je oblikovalo i što bi, po njemu, moglo oblikovati i svijet sutra.
Priča o obitelji, o djetinjstvu u kvartu, o siromaštvu, o školi, svećenstvu, o greškama zbog kojih i danas žali..., ali usput stalno ubacuje poruke – o miru, ratu, ženama u Crkvi, humoru, ekologiji, umjetnoj inteligenciji (!), svemu. Ima tu i tuge i smijeha. Ima čak i viceva o svećenicima.
Posebno mi je bilo zanimljivo kad piše o svom odnosu prema sportu. Kaže da ima 'dvije lijeve noge', ali da je nogometne rezultate pratio i kad je prestao gledati televiziju. (Moj čovjek.)
I da, ne zaobilazi teške teme: otvoreno govori o potrebi da Crkva izađe iz svojih uskih okvira, da se otvori i onima koje je najduže držala podalje – rastavljenima, homoseksualcima, trans osobama, zatvorenicima, prostitutkama... Ali nije to neki pamflet. Ne zaziva revoluciju. On samo polako, tiho, ljudski — objašnjava zašto misli da bi trebalo drugačije. Ne ide protiv svih tradicionalnih crkvenih stavova, protivi se rodnoj ideologiji i surogat-majčinstvu, ali se ne boji reći ni ono što dio Crkve ne želi čuti.
Mislim da će svatko naći nešto za sebe, ali da će svima leći poruka 'ne odustaj.'
Ova bi knjiga mogla njegovu nasljedniku, papi Lavu XIV., staviti popriličan teret na leđa. Jer Franjo je ostavio visoko podignutu letvicu – ljudskosti.
Jedina ozbiljna zamjerka ide na promotivni slogan o 'prvoj autobiografiji jednog pape'. Ako i zanemarimo to što se autobiografijom obično smatra nešto što je netko sam napisao (a ovdje imamo Mussov doprinos), valja podsjetiti da su autobiografije pisali i papa Pio II. (posmrtno objavljena) i Ivan Pavao II. (Dar i otajstvo). No znate i sami da izdavači vole prigodne natpise.
Ne znam što će sve ostati od ove knjige u vremenu koje dolazi. Ali ako barem ponešto od njegovih poruka o miru, ljudskosti i otvorenosti potraje – imat će smisla. I to ne samo kao Papina, nego kao ljudska ostavština. Ostavština za budućnost. Topla preporuka.

This book surprised me with how good and thoughtful it was. I knew going into it that I would have differences in theology, since I’m not a Catholic. But despite the occasional reference of praying to Mary, this book was a full of pastoral wisdom and spiritual guidance that I found very refreshing. There were quite a few times where the book shifted into politics and the issues of the world. It actually felt like Obama’s “Audacity of Hope” but with more spirituality.
Among the many topics, a few stood out to me as very powerful and relevant. The first was his passion for the poor and powerless among us, and so much of Pope Francis’ heart was devoted to caring for the poor. Another topic was war and specifically how war causes so much pain and suffering among the innocent. Lastly, the topic of mercy was a constant theme in Francis’ life. I truly appreciated hearing his passion for showing mercy wherever and however and to whoever he can.
Perhaps the only thing I didn’t like was the first 20% or so. This book started off very slow and I considered whether I wanted to continue it. I’m glad I did because the rest of the book was very good in my opinion. I’d recommend this book to Christians and non-Christians alike and I think it shows the heart of a wise man who loved people well.

For a brief time in recent history, it seemed the Catholic Church had gone from being a strict, fear-based sect to a denomination of realists. As quickly as it started, it caught up with the conservative religions that had left it behind. Pity.
Jorge Bergoglio, of course known to the world as Pope Francis, seems firmly entrenched in that blip in Church history. In this memoir, we learn about his parents’ emigration from Italy to Argentina (not everyone who came to the Americas came to the north); his love of sports; the humble but lively community where he grew up, full of kindly parents, fellow immigrant families, musicians, prostitutes, and other local color smiling down on young Jorge and his younger siblings. He grows up with faith, which informs his life more than any religion ever could despite him becoming pope eventually. He also tells a lot of jokes, as would your favorite Italian uncle.
‘Hope’ is a lovely little memoir. Francis talks at length about disappeared friends and colleagues who ran afoul of the government. He discusses his conscience and worries about transgressions against playmates decades earlier. He expresses horror at those who do not have the best interests at heart for the youngest members of society. He talks about the senselessness and human toll of war—a lot. And he really doesn’t seem to judge. Honestly. People have children out of wedlock, die by suicide, skip Mass for years, live in same-sex relationships, get divorced: These don’t seem to be dealbreakers for him or God’s loving acceptance. It is rather refreshing that he recognizes our shared humanity and all its…humanness. (Francis incorporates this in his essays on climate change, digital immersion and AI, and threats to democracy.)
At 88, Francis likely will not be along for much longer. As much as he has done, I think he can do so much more. He says he may not judge, but it would be great if he enshrined such attitudes. (Whatever you bind on earth is already bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth isalready loosed in heaven. Etc., etc.) He is not only extremely intelligent but also quite wise, and we certainly need more of that in the world, regardless of faith tradition or lack thereof. He is a pope for our time.
Bonus: Watch the excellent 2024 film ‘Conclave.’ (The process is described briefly in the book, so you will know what’s going on.) You’ll see how modern Francis is.

Empecé a leer este libro con el papa vivo y lo termino tres
días después de su muerte. Me han gustado mucho los capítulos en los que habla de su recorrido vital y de su trayectoria dentro del vaticano, a través de los cuales he comprendido mejor la figura de este papa. Los capítulos finales llenos de esperanza nos dan también la clave del espíritu de Francisco. Muy interesante, no solo para gente de fe, sino para cualquier persona interesada en una figura clave de nuestro tiempo, como ha sido el papa Francisco.

Pope Francis' autobiography Hope delivers on its title: the work balances a searing criticism of the rising tide of authoritarianism with reasons to believe that the future will be brighter. The most interesting parts are where Pope Francis calls for people to stop looking at individual societal problems as if they are unrelated. Instead, he draws lines between topics as seemingly different as inequality, climate change, war (which he calls "stupid"), AI, and human dignity.

So touching to get his book on Easter and then several hours later he passed. An incredible human being, an inspiration to humanity at its best.
