The One and Only Vivian Stone

Rate this book
"Intriguing, sparkling with wit, and suspenseful in all the right places." —Abby Jimenez, New York Times bestselling author

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo meets The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel in this enchanting novel about estranged lovers reconnecting over mysterious tapes found in an attic and the old Hollywood secret hidden within them.

After her grandmother’s death, thirty-something Margot DuBois prepares to sell the house quickly so she can go back to her predictable life in Santa Barbara. There, no one knows she used to write and that her lack of success wrecked her confidence. But while cleaning out the attic, she comes across eight unlabeled cassette tapes. Unable to use the damaged tape player, she calls in a favor from Leo—her first love and first epic heartbreak—and they strike a deal: he’ll fix the player if he can hear what’s on the tapes. When they manage to listen, the two are shocked to hear the voice of comedic legend Vivian Stone. Why did she record these tapes and how did Margot’s grandmother get them?

Between listening to Vivian recount everything from her forbidden love for Hollywood’s leading actor, to working under a misogynistic exec, to her chemistry with her costar-turned-husband on TV, Margot and Leo fall down a memory lane of their own. Margot is inspired by Vivian’s tenacity and courage to keep fighting for the life she wants, but everything changes when Vivian reveals a secret from her past in this moving exploration of how it’s never too late to start over.

4.5 dual timeline Hollywood stars

This one was a lot of fun to read, and the timelines worked! The present storyline features Margot, returning to her grandmother’s house after her death. She plans to pack everything up and sell the house. It’s hard work because the house is filled with memories and some regrets for the last conversation they had. She comes across a box of mysterious cassette tapes.

Leo was Margot’s first love, and unbelievably, he’s still working at the family music store. Margot seeks him out to restore the tape player to listen to the tapes. He gets the first tape ready, and they listen together, shocked to hear the famous Hollywood voice of Vivian Stone. Did her grandmother know Vivian? Where did these tapes come from?

Then the story really takes off as we learn Vivian’s story from the tapes. With nostalgia of old Hollywood coming through, I fell in love with this star who fought her way to the top. There are love affairs, dominating studio execs who control their stars, and a hope that true love can survive it all.

I rooted for Vivian the whole time, and I couldn’t wait to see how her life turned out. And to ultimately learn the connection of the tapes.

As they make their way through the tapes, it becomes clear that Margot and Leo still have feelings for each other. Can they find a way to make a relationship work long-distance?

This amazing debut novel really resonated with me and I can’t wait to read the next work from this author.

Marilyn and I buddy read this one and had a great discussion! I think this would make an excellent book club book.

My thanks to Gallery Books for the opportunity to read and honestly review this one.

"The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo meets The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel in this enchanting novel about estranged lovers reconnecting over mysterious tapes found in an attic and the old Hollywood secret hidden within them."

The One And Only Vivian Stone is an incredible debut revolving around the Golden Age of Hollywood. I was equally interested in both timelines: the life of 1950s actress Vivian Stone on tapes she recorded that are listened to by Margot DuBois in present day. The character development is flawless, and the intertwining of both timelines seamless. I was invested in all of the characters and loved all of them thanks to understanding all of their motives and emotions so clearly. Although many characters are movie stars, they all have the same challenges and dreams as anyone else. I loved this and can't wait for Melissa O'Connor's next book! Highly recommend!

This was a stunning and well written debut! If you liked Evelyn Hugo or Great Big Beautiful Life, you’ll definitely love this one. But even if you didn’t, I would still recommend this because it was such a fun read! It’s told in a similar fashion with dual timelines focusing on the present and past. The storytelling was mesmerizing from start to finish! I loved the creative structure of the newspaper and tapes being incorporated into the book to allow us the glimpses back into Vivian’s life.

This book had me so emotionally attached to every character, especially with Vivian’s story. Her friendship with Ruth was precious. They were so supportive of each other. I also loveddd Vivian’s romances with Kit and Hugh. Despite all the ups and downs that Vivian went through, each men had meaningful impacts during different stages of Vivian’s life. But I gotta say Hugh was definitely my favorite. The angst? The yearning??? Give me more, please😭❤️ There were many emotional moments and I was thoroughly invested in the overall plot.

I was always rooting for Vivian and was so proud of her. I had a lot of respect for her dedication to working for what she wanted because she deserved all the successes that eventually came to her. The book also touches a bit on the darker side of Hollywood, particularly with the struggles that female actors tend to face in the film industry. It was really interesting to see the positive and negative experiences of an actress’s role in the film industry and how her identity as a woman affects her work lifestyle and the opportunities offered. There’s alot of themes centered around misogyny, body shaming, and even SA that women constantly face in the industry by the higher ups taking advantage of them. I think the author covers that quite well. This would be a great book club book if you’re looking for a “story within a story” with themes of old Hollywood and important life lessons.

Throughout the entire book, I had running theories about who Vivian really was and what her relationship was to her grandmother. The mystery aspect was done well through the reveal but I did feel that it was just a tad bit rushed at the end.

I also wish the relationship between Margot and Leo (the main present-day romance) was more developed. While we were told most of what happened between them, their relationship was happening secondary to the main story centered around Vivian. While I could assume that was the point, I really wanted more of Margot and Leo to have a balance between the two timelines. More flashback scenes would have added to the meaningful moments of their relationship too.

Thank you so much to NetGalley, the author, and Gallery Books for the eARC!

The One and Only Vivian Stone is a fabulous debut by Melissa O'Connor. Perfect for fans of Taylor Jenkins Reid and readers of romance, this book took me on an emotional journey. Told in two timelines, one in the era of Vivian Stone, an actress in the 50s, and one in present day in the POV of Margot, a failed writer who finds tapes recorded by Vivian when cleaning out her deceased grandmother's home, the tale weaves intrigue as you question exactly how Margot and Vivian are connected, and root for both Vivian and Margot's emotional journeys.

All the characters are so well-developed and their emotional connections are intricately woven. From Vivian, her friend Ruth, and her connections with actors Hugo and Kit had me flipping the pages. Vivian starts off as an aspiring dramatic actress, only to go on to achieve greatness in a way she never imagined. I was utterly captivated by the highs and lows of her life and her journey as an actress.
Margot has been dumped by her ex, who is also a writer, and has vowed off on pursuing her dreams of being a writer thanks to rejection. Now, back in her hometown, she bumps into her first love, Leo. Forced proximity throws them together as Leo is the only one who knows how to salvage the mysterious tapes Margot found in her grandmother's home. But as they learn more about Vivian and her story, Margot and Leo learn more about each other and the love that they lost, and maybe can find again.

I highly recommend this book and can't wait to read what O'Connor gifts us with next. A new auto-buy author for me!

There's no better feeling than getting so engrossed in a book that you pick it up on a Saturday morning at like 26% and don't put it down until you finish. Because you're just so immersed in the fictional word, so captivated by the words on the page; dying to know what happens to the characters you grew to care for.

That was my Saturday morning with most of THE ONE AND ONLY VIVIAN STONE.

I know that it isn't one of the comps for the book, but it gave me a distinct vibe of The Longest Ride, in a very good way. I loved the dual timeline and the mystery of Vivian and Margot's connection, and smiled through tears when it was revealed.

I loved, loved Kit. Probably not the reaction I should have but I can't help it, I really did. I adored Hugh. My heart ached for Vivian, and for Ruth, and for Ginger. For every woman and man who had to squash themselves into a box to step a bit closer to fulfilling their dreams.

The glitz and glamour of 1950s Hollywood clashed with perseverance and the tenacity. The raw emotions and complexity of juggling the wants and needs of a heart with career aspirations - especially when you feel powerless in your position - tore a hole through my heart. It was such an intetesting, heartfelt take on fame and the cost of it, with weaved in humour to lighten the tone and powerful message about how sometimes things we fought with teeth and nails for just aren't for us; and how a failure can be a redirection.

It was an absolutely fantastic debut from Melissa O'Connor, ticking so many boxes. Highly, highly recommeend.

This was a dazzling and emotional dual timeline historical fiction that swept me away from the very first page. Set against the glittering backdrop of old Hollywood, the story explores the life of Vivian Stone, a fierce and groundbreaking actress who refuses to let the era’s limitations define her. Flashing forward to the present day, we follow Margot, a writer piecing together Vivian’s legacy, and in doing so, begins to find her own purpose and truth.

What sets this novel apart is its captivating character work. Vivian has the bold charisma and charm of a screen legend, with shades of Lucille Ball’s comedic brilliance and emotional depth. While the book is being compared to The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, I found Vivian Stone to have its own unique sparkle. Margot’s journey intertwines beautifully with Vivian’s, and both women felt fully fleshed out, complex, and deeply relatable. The shifting timelines never felt disjointed—instead, they enriched each other, revealing secrets, strength, and resilience.

This story truly has it all: romance, family drama, historical richness, and an undercurrent of mystery that kept me emotionally hooked. I was thoroughly invested in both timelines and all the supporting characters. It’s a love letter to ambitious women, untold stories, and the golden age of film. Whether you’re here for the Hollywood glam, the heart tugging emotion, or the slow burn uncovering of a life well lived, you’ll find something to love in this unforgettable read.

The One and Only Vivian Stone by Melissa O’Connor. Thanks to @gallerybooks for the gifted Arc ⭐️⭐️⭐️

When Margot finds audio tapes in her recently passed grandmother’s home, she listens to them with her childhood love. They find the tale of comedic legend Vivian Stone on the tapes. The mystery is why her grandmother has them.

I loved getting to know Vivian at the start of her career and greatly appreciated the look at the comedian in the 1950’s. That’s not like anything I’ve read before and the Hollywood part was fun. About halfway through I unfortunately wasn’t as interested, once the relationship(s) got going. While I liked Hugh, I couldn’t get into that part of the story with him and Kit, which was a main component. I loved Vivian’s character!

“When I’m with you, I’m a blazing fire. When I’m not, I’m crackling embers.”

The Only and Only Vivian Stone comes out 7/22.

I just finished this book and I’m sad the story is over. I felt so immersed in it- like watching a movie.

Vivian Stone was an amazing woman who rose from nothing to fame. She initially had to make things work by being walked over and taken advantage of. Those were the norms of women who wanted to be actresses back then.

I love how towards the end she found her voice and wouldn’t settle for anything less than she wanted and deserved. She also stood up for other women as well!

I enjoyed the dual time line with the two love stories.

I will say I was more invested in Vivian’s story compared to Margot. I think if there was a little more to the current day plot I would have felt more connected to Margot’s life as well.

The story was such a cool concept. I could see this being an amazing audiobook as well!

The One and Only Vivian Stone was an outstanding debut from Melissa O'Conner. The story centers on Vivian and her career during the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, as well as a young woman trying to reconcile the grandmother she knew with a mysterious past.

Told in dual timelines, we meet struggling actress Vivan who is determined to find her calling as a dramatic actress but is thrust into comedy roles. To her surprise, this is where Vivian thrives as a comedic actress and script writer. In the present timeline, we meet Margot Dubois. Raised by a single mother and her grandmother, Margot is tasked with cleaning her grandmother's home after her passing. It is there where she finds a box of old cassette tapes narrated by Vivian herself.

I was thoroughly invested in Vivian's story, but a bit less engaged with Margot and Leo's story, which seemed a bit more predictable. I loved sharing Vivian's success as comedy actress who finds success and freedom. Her move to television was reminiscent of popular shows like I Love Lucy or Laverne and Shirley. It also touched on the misogyny of the past - relevant today in the form of the Epstein file drama.

The conclusion to Vivian's story was both heartbreaking and heartwarming and almost a complete surprise. And even Margot's story ends on an uplifting note.

Thank you to Gallery Books and author Melissa O'Connor for the free e-ARC of this book! All opinions are my own.

I really enjoyed this historical fiction, dual-timeline story about Vivian Stone, born Vivian Mackenzie, an actress trying to find her path in 1950s Hollywood and in life. I'll say up top that this book invites Evelyn Hugo comparisons - and therefore Great Big Beautiful Life, as well. Unlike those books, however, the modern-day storyline does not involve any journalists writing about the past. Instead there is Margot, who discovers a series of tapes left behind by Vivian as she grieves the recent loss of her own grandmother. There was some romance in that timeline which I enjoyed, but I was most captivated by Vivian's story. Along those lines I'd say the balance of timelines is flipflopped from GBBL, with Vivian's life taking the main stage.

Separate from any comparisons, though, there are plenty of reasons to read this book! The plot kept me hooked as Vivian navigated multiple romantic relationships and plenty of professional obstacles. The book examines the seedy underbelly of Hollywood from multiple angles. And while I'd like to think it's better now, I somehow have the sense that not nearly enough has changed.

I ate this plot up. I cared about Vivian on both a professional and personal level. Once I got into the back half of the book I had that "stay up late, need to finish the book" feeling that we all love. The book planted so many seeds for future conflict early on that I was just waiting for the other shoe to drop and had to keep reading. Melissa incorporated reflections on so many important issues, like sexism and misogyny among others, but she deftly wove them into the plot such that it never felt distracting. If the synopsis and my review piqued your interest, I highly recommend that you give this one a try!

While in the process of cleaning out her grandmothers house, Margot finds a series of cassette tapes. She reconnects with an ex boyfriend and together they listen, one by one to the tapes. Vivian Stone, star of screen and TV, is telling her life story. What connection does Vivian have with Margot’s grandmother?

When I saw this likened to The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, I knew I had to read it. With a dual timeline of old Hollywood and current time, this book hooked me from the first page. I became immersed in Vivian’s journey to become a dramatic actress. When that door seemed closed to her, she took another one and owned it. The author delves into controlling studio execs, misogyny, love, loss, friendships and forgiveness. The merger of the two stories was flawless. While this book focuses on Vivian’s story, I totally enjoyed Margot’s dedication to her family, and her reconnection with Leo. This was such an enjoyable debut novel. I look forward to this author’s next book!

Thanks to Gallery Books and NetGalley for this ARC. This is my honest opinion.

This is a great debut novel that kept me turning the pages. It’s a dual-timeline story that goes back and forth between 1950s Hollywood and the present day.

Margot Dubois was raised by her single mother and grandmother. When her grandmother passes, and she has to clean out her home, she comes across some audiotapes in the attic. What she finds in them is quite surprising!

Vivian Stone was a famous Hollywood movie star who had to fight for her fame and for love. Producers had a lot of control over her professional and personal life. What is the link between Vivian and Margot’s family?

“There will always be people thinking they can tell you what you’re worth.” I met her gaze. "Don’t let them.”

✨Old Hollywood
✨Romance
✨Drama
✨Mystery

I loved the nods to the glamour of old Hollywood and especially enjoyed Vivian’s perspective in the 1950’s timeline. It was primary in the story. She’s an interesting and dynamic character.

CW | Contains a couple of instances of strong profanity and a few intimate scenes, with mild details. Triggers to be aware of.

Helllo to a new favorite of mine! This was giving me all the Evelyn Hugo vibes, but I actually liked it more! I feel like this type of interview style book is being overdone, but there was just something about this story that sucked me in and I couldn’t stop turning the pages. Vivian and Hugh’s story really kept me on the edge of my seat. I loved their story so much. I just felt that connection for them and that’s all because the writing was so good! I highly recommend this gem!

(Rounded up for GR) THE ONE AND ONLY VIVIAN STONE by Melissa O’Connor ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 This book gave me Evelyn Hugo vibes and was the most enjoyable binge read! I loved the format, reading about present day and then listening to the tapes as flash backs. I was invested in the characters and it felt worth the hangover to read it until 2am. And Hugh. I just loved him so much. Now, why did I take off half a star? I felt so unsatisfied with the end / last chapter. But I think that could have just been me. If you read it, tell me what you think about the very end!

Margaret returns to her hometown after her Grandmother passes to clean out and sell her home. When she finds tapes in the attic, she listens to them with an old friend / love. What she finds ends up becoming a mystery she is very invested in. She wants to know why her Grandmother has them.

Perfect if you like:
•Old Hollywood.
•Hidden secrets.
•Unexpected twist.
•Strong female characters!

3.5⭐️s.

This was pretty good. I liked the premise… Margot finding these old cassette tapes in her grandma’s attic and realizing they’re from a famous actress, Vivian Stone, was a fun setup. Vivian’s story had some interesting layers, including the old Hollywood vibes, the romance, and things she went through in the industry. That part kept me engaged.

What didn’t really land for me was the present-day storyline. I really wanted more from Margot and Leo’s relationship. It felt kind of flat and underdeveloped. Their second chance romance just didn’t hit for me.

I was wondering throughout how it was all going to come together, and while I did enjoy the twist, I saw it coming after a certain part of the book. And the ending felt rushed to me, and I think it could’ve had more of an emotional impact if it had been drawn out a bit and if Margot’s character had been explored more.

Overall, I liked the book and the idea behind it, but it didn’t wow me. Still a good read though!

Note: This review is for an ARC and is my unbiased opinion.

The blurb was right. The One and Only Vivian Stone did give off The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo with a dash of The Marvelous Miss Maisel vibes. That is a great thing as I loved both of those and I had a fabulous time reading this book. I was intrigued by both Margot and Leo's story and the one that was unwinding through Vivian's cassette tapes. I enjoyed how Margot got her second chance with Leo while learning what tore them apart originally. I was even more entertained by Vivian's Hollywood story, the romances she had, and why Margot's grandmother had her tapes. Everything unraveled so perfectly and in a way that kept me from wanting to put the book down. It is hard to believe that The One and Only Vivian Stone is Melissa O'Connor's debut novel. I can't wait to read whatever she writes next.

The One and Only Vivian Stone by Melissa O'Connor

For fans of the Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo - this is your next favourite book.
This is a 5 stars from me read. I could not put this down. I spent the first half of the book grinning from ear to ear trying to decide if I was team Kit or team Hugh and the second half obsessively reading wondering what was going to happen to Vivian and what her connection was to Margot. This is a book that gets 5 stars from me more because of the way it made me feel and because I just couldn't stop reading it until I made it to the end.

Of course, I was more interested in the story of the past than the present day, but a couple of steamy scenes in the present day helped keep me engaged in the present day characters of Margot and Leo.

Synopsis: Margot is cleaning out her grandmothers house after her passing when she comes upon a note with 7 cassettes (the 8th one is missing), which sends her to her ex-boyfriend to help her connect the tapes with a cassette player. They begin to listen together and are enraptured with Vivian Stone's story of Old Hollywood, love affairs and the treatment actors had to endure from studio heads (and still do).

In the post Weinstein/me too movement era, to read some of these Hollywood/Executive Studio Head stories wasn't shocking but infuriating all the same.

I highly recommend this book to all readers, as it is a multi-genre book and sure to capture the attention of many different readers alike.

BOOK: The One and Only Vivian Stone
AUTHOR: Melissa O’Connor
PUB DATE: July 22. 2025, by Gallery Books
PAGES: 368 pages
RATING: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️♾️
GENRE: Historical Fiction/Romance

THANK YOU to Gallery Books & Netgalley for gifting me an advanced copy of this debut! This is one of my favorites of 2025 so far! (Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.)

QUICK SYNOPSIS: When Margot DuBois returns to her late grandmother’s home in Long Beach, she plans to pack up the past and move on quickly. But a surprising discovery in the attic, a box of mysterious cassette tapes, halts everything. The tapes feature the voice of legendary 1950s Hollywood star Vivian Stone, and they spark questions Margot never expected to ask about her family's history… and herself. As she enlists the help of her high school ex to uncover the story behind the tapes, Margot is drawn into a dual narrative: one that unfolds in the present as she reexamines her own choices, and one that reveals the life of a fiercely talented woman navigating fame, love, & ambition in the Golden Age of Hollywood.

QUICK & SPOILER-FREE REVIEW: I absolutely loved The One and Only Vivian Stone, by Melissa O’Connor! This book, told with warmth, wit, & emotional depth, swept me up from the very first page. It’s a moving exploration of identity, legacy, and the stories we inherit and the ones we choose to tell. The blend of old Hollywood glamour and heartfelt, modern-day discovery was pitch perfect. The characters felt real, the writing was rich and immersive, and the story left me thinking about the power of legacy, love, and reinvention. A beautiful, moving debut that couldn’t put it down and didn’t want to end! This author will be an auto-buy for me!

Many thanks to Gallery Books & NetGalley for the invitation to read an advanced eARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinions.

When Margot’s grandmother dies, she returns to her hometown & is tasked with getting her grandmother’s house ready to sell. She stumbles upon a number of casette tapes that has her intrigued. She solicits the help of her high school boyfriend to fix a casette recorder, and they end up listening to them together. What they discover is a series of tapes recorded back in the early 1950’s by the then famous comedienne, Vivian Stone. The tapes tell of her hollywood experiences and what she went through to make a name for herself (in a male dominated industry, so you can only imagine some of the atrocities). It becomes Margot’s mission to figure out why her grandmother had these tapes. I found this debut novel to be very entertaining, and I was totally invested in finding out the connection as well.

This book started so strong for me. I LOVED the Old Hollywood vibes, loved the classic romance vibes, the Lucy/Desi vibes, even the Dark Hollywood elements that were touched on: it was all so intriguing and I was vibing hard for this book! It took a turn for me around 60% that I just was not a fan of and was so disappointed.

Spoilers:
I am not opposed to any trope because I believe I can like anything if it’s done well but, in this case, I could not get behind the love triangle… I LOVED Kit, and I loved the relationship he and Vivian had and felt what they had was genuine and his feelings, everything about him, was genuine. But getting married and then Vivian continuing to pine for a man that was not her husband, write secret love letters to a man that was not her husband, go on (essentially) dates with a man that was not her husband, and then gaslighting her husband for being jealous was just not okay for me. And then Kit’s abrupt change in character simply so their marriage could implode and she end up with Hugh was just too much 😩 I feel like if Vivian and Kit’s relationship had started deteriorating before they got married and ended BEFORE they got married etc it would have been a lot easier to get behind? There were just no red flags prior to their getting married so it felt so out of left field the way things changed and ended for them… I do love that they eventually reconciled and that they remained friends.

Overall I found the story to be very intriguing and there were many elements I loved, I just wish the love triangle was done a bit differently.

Have you ever foraged through your parents' or grandparents' old photos or letters and discovered pictures of people you have no clue to who they are? Just imagine finding a box of cassettes labeled 1 to 8 with only 7 tapes in it. There is no clue to who made them or why. In THE ONE AND ONLY VIVIAN STONE that is exactly what happens to Margot. TO solve the mystery, first she has to restore the tapes and find a cassette player. An old flame from high school comes to the rescue. As Vivian reveals secrets of her past, Margot and Leo rekindle their long ago love and reveal secrets of their own. Just when Margot thinks she will not learn the final chapter in Vivian's life, she discovers the last tape hidden away in a kitchen cabinet along with a note. With this revelation, Margot is able to meet Vivian, and a new chapter of her life begins.

I loved the book. A very enjoyable read. Thank you, Goodreads, for this giveaway.

This book is so funny and romantic!! I cried multiple times, laughed throughout, and swooned over and over. The story is pitched as the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel meets TJR's The Seven Husbands, and I couldn't think of a more perfect way to describe this book. Vivian's dialogue reminded me precisely of something Miriam Maisel or Lucille Ball would say, spoken with sass, confidence, and a touch of vulnerability and heart. There was an added layer of suspense in the form of the story (told through tapes that the present-day character Margot finds), and I loved watching the story lines connect perfectly at the end. Highly recommend!

I guess you could call this a cozy mystery or maybe a lighthearted romance novel. Very gossipy which goes along with the movie business. It flows nicely and it’s simple reading. An overall decent book but it doesn't have enough substance for my tastes.
Thanks to Gallery Books and Goodreads for the Advance Reader's Edition.

Thank you Galley Books for my copy! All thoughts are my own.

I feel like there was a bit of fate and kismet with this book. I saw it on NetGalley and immedley requested it based on the synopsis. Then I was scrolling after dinner and discovered a local bookstore was holding an event to celebrate the book…because the author is local to me! It was so exciting and so I was even more excited to read it. It was a fun reading experience and I look forward to more from this debut author!

Synopsis:

“After her grandmother’s death, thirty-something Margot DuBois prepares to sell the house quickly so she can go back to her predictable life in Santa Barbara. There, no one knows she used to write and how not succeeding wrecked her confidence. While cleaning out the attic, she comes across eight unlabeled cassette tapes. Why did she record these tapes and how did Margot’s grandmother get them?Between listening to Vivian recount everything from her forbidden love for Hollywood’s leading actor, to working under a misogynistic exec, to her chemistry with her costar-turned-husband on TV, Margot and Leo fall down a memory lane of their own. Margot is inspired by Vivian’s tenacity and courage to keep fighting for the life she wants, but everything changes when Vivian reveals a secret tied to her past in this moving exploration of how it’s never too late to start over.” —NetGalley

What I Liked:

The Structure—As a big fan of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, I’ll always look for other books that feel the same. This did, but spent even less time in the “present” so it really felt like Vivian’s story.

The Behind the Scenes Look at Hollywood—As an actor, I’m always fascinated by this and love it so much!

Pacing—It moved very well and kept me reading, wanting to know what happened next.

What Didn’t Work for Me:

Twist Ending—I didn’t love the twist…I get why it had to happen and it definitely surprised me and kept me guessing. I guess I personally just felt icky about it, but it’s a me problem not a book problem.

Character Authenticity: 4/5 Spice Rating: 1/5 Overall Rating: 4/5

This is a pretty new release with not a ton of popularity or traction, but I saw it on libby and was sold by the “Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo meets Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” comp title. Also while this book doesn’t have a ton of reviews the ones it does have are an overwhelming amount of 4 and 5 stars. After reading I see almost all of these reviews are for people who received arcs so that makes sense because this book simply wasn’t good. So here’s a review from someone who just happened to pick this up and doesn’t need to give thanks to publishers, net galley, etc

This is this author’s debut novel and it shows. While the premise was promising and I was entertained, the writing was lack luster and so many of the characters and plot lines felt underdeveloped. The author did a lot of showing rather than telling, and stated a lot of the same information over and over again. Learning Vivian’s story was fun and the author had great ideas but executed them at what felt like an elementary level. Plus the present day second chance romance plot felt like an afterthought and didn’t really add much to the story for me.

I’m giving this 3 stars because I was entertained and found it to be a very quick read but this could’ve been so much better with a little more plot and character development, and better writing. Be ware of all the glowing reviews!!

ARC Review: The One and Only Vivian Stone by Melissa O'Connor
Pub Date: July 22nd

Thank you @Gallerybooks for the eARC and to @just_talking_to_myshelf and @bookswithnopictures for arranging the traveling ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Oh my GOSH, you guys!! This is a book that will stick with me for quite some time - and it gets the rare honor of making me cry!!

When Margot's grandmother dies, Margot is tasked with cleaning out her house to sell it. She hasn't been back to town much since leaving and little does she know that her best friend and first love Leo is still in town. Margot finds some cassette tapes in the house but can't find a way to play them to see what might be on them. She gets help from Leo and they listen to the tapes together, only to find that they are from Old Hollywood star, Vivian Stone. On the tapes, Vivian walks through her life story from trying to make it in Hollywood to becoming a household name. As they listen, they wonder how Margot's grandmother got these and what the connection could be.

I don't always love dual timeline stories because I'm typically much more invested in one over the other but since this one spent most of it's time in the past with just a few chapters here and there in the present, it worked super well for me. I was so compelled by Vivian's story and it felt like I was really transported back to Old Hollywood. This book was immersive and I just couldn't put it down! And of course, there was just enough romance in both timelines to keep my little romance loving heart invested.

I could not recommend this enough - I have gone away from reading as much historical fiction in the last couple of years but this one reminded me of everything I love about the genre.
