✨Delightful art, great pacing, characters that hit… I'm obsessed with this!✨
Muted vol.1 is a paranormal graphic novel about Camille, a witch from a very important family of witches able to do magic blood. But, since her mother died, something is wrong with her and her relationship with the only family she has is in danger if she can’t perform magic. To figure out the problem, she must deal with old devils that are too painful to remember.
I need to start saying that, before reading this, I thought I couldn’t connect with graphic novels the way I do with prose novels, so I read them only sometimes because I enjoy the drawings. Muted vol.1 showed me that I was just picking the wrong ones, because the characters hit from chapter one. I had read a couple of pages and I was already dreading that something could happen to Camille.
I loved and cared for all the (good) characters. I shipped everyone and was curious about everything. But it’s not just the characters that are well-written, the plot is very compelling and the pacing is great. There aren't dull moments to introduce everyone at the beginning. This was not only an introduction, there were things happening, questions answered but there is still plenty to unravel.
From the reviews, this is a polyamorous sapphic romance, but in this book there is only one obvious love interest (although I have a second candidate). This promises to be a very slow burn sapphic romance, which I love.
Also, I was mesmerized by the designs of the characters, the drawing style and the colors. I can’t wait to read what the author is going to be doing in the next volumes.
Overall, I highly recommend this if you enjoy paranormal graphic novels full of female characters, witches and promises of slow burn sapphic love. Even if you think you don’t love graphic novels as much, as I thought, maybe you’ll finally fall in love with them. Now, if you excuse me, I’m going to beg Netgalley for an ARC of the second volume too because I cannot wait to continue reading this.

if you like witches, beautiful art and a sapphic polyamorous romance, then i highly recommend this series. i originally read it on webtoon but there’s still some parts of the story that will be new to me moving forward, as it wasn’t a series i had fully completed beforehand. Camille is a witch who’s struggling with her magic and feels ostracized by her family, there’s some secrets to her lineage and the types of magic she possesses. i love all the little pet familiars and the way things take a slightly darker turn every now and then. so happy this is getting republished with physical volumes!

Muted: Volume 1 is a stunning graphic novel about Camille; a young witch from a family of witches. Camille lives with her cousin (who she's very close to) and Aunt (who despises her niece) and certainly doesn't have it easy.
When Camille attempts a summoning of a demon during a blood ritual, it goes very wrong, and instead of summoning a demon, she somehow manages to summon vines and leaves. She is understandably upset as this is a very important ritual in her family and flees to the swamps where she collapses. When she's brought back to the house, her other aunt takes her to stay with her for a while and the only happiness this brings Camille is that she gets a break away from her Aunt and gets to spend time with her beloved familiar Toben. But the time away brings much more into Camilles' life: love, answers, reunions, and time to find out what really happened to her sister and mother when they were taken from her.
This was such a great start to a series of graphic novels and I can't wait to read on in volume 2. The use of colour used is perfect for the atmosphere of the book and the aesthetics of each witch family was perfect!

I thought the artwork on the cover was absolutely beautiful and I loved the last YA graphic novel that I read, Paper Girls by Brian K. Vaughn and Cliff Chiang. I really thought I would love this book just as much. Thank you to the author and publisher for including content warnings in the front matter.
Final Review
(thoughts & recs) One of my favorite parts is 265 pages in, which marks a significant quickening of pace. Unfortunately, the story here is built entirely upon dialog. If you've never visually beheld people talking for almost 300 pages, I promise it's as boring as it sounds.
I know some readers are really enamored with characters and their development, especially dialog, and don't really care if everything else is missing. Those are the readers I would recommend this one to. Also readers who enjoy fantasy themes will enjoy this.
My 5 Favorite Things:
✔️ I absolutely adore when authors and publishers decide to include content/trigger warnings. I firmly believe all books should include them.
✔️ This book is completely gorgeous, but I don't have a good handle on the plot or characters. It's hard to tell a story in panels, using only subtext and dialog! *edit Character work is starting to come together.
✔️ The pace picks up by the end of the book. The conflict felt too flat before that though.
✔️ The bonus material at the end is probably my favorite section in the book. It's such an accessible, authentic scene.
✔️ I'm not always big on fantasy but the characters in this book are easy to relate to and very human, while also being whatever else they are, which helped ground me in this story. I enjoyed the demon element also, I think the treatment of this myth is fresh.

Muted Volume 1 is a beautifully illustrated graphic novel/webtoon. I found myself devouring it and the art was breathtaking.
The story follows a witch on her path to self-discovery as she meets other witches her age and starts to unravel her traumatic past. This is such a strong start to a graphic novel series. I can't wait to read more. I loved the introduction to all the characters and can't wait to see more. It's definitely one I will be picking up!

This graphic novel follows Camille Severin, a witch who experiences something very strange during her family's summoning ritual. Instead of summoning a the demon she was prepared for, vines grow from her sigil. Scared of what this means for her magic and her family's reaction, she leaves the city for time away at her childhood home. There, with new and old friends, she begins to learn about her magic, lineage, and the fire that killed her mother and sister.
I loved being introduced to the different witch families and their family magics. Camille's story is full of mystery and darkness; I was glad to see her support system and self-assurance grow within this volume. I'm excited to read more of this story!

Review of Muted: Volume 1 by Miranda Mundt
I was initially drawn to Muted: Volume 1 because of its intriguing premise; witchcraft and magic are always a great foundation for a compelling story. The comic started off strong, with an immersive atmosphere and the potential for rich world-building. However, as the story progressed, I found myself losing interest. What began as a promising tale of magic and mystery veered off course into something entirely different.
While I appreciate diversity in storytelling, Muted seemed more focused on ticking every representation box rather than maintaining a cohesive narrative. Instead of feeling organic, the diversity felt forced, as though the story was being shaped around representation rather than the other way around. As a result, the initial premise, the very thing that made the comic intriguing, got lost. The shift in focus took away from the magical elements and led the story down a path that felt muddled and, ultimately, disappointing.
Overall, Muted: Volume 1 had great potential, but it lost its way. While some may enjoy its approach, I found that it sacrificed its original strengths in favor of something less engaging.

This was everything I wanted from a graphic novel and more 😍
Muted follows Camille, a witch from the Severin family, who performs a demon summoning blood ritual that goes wrong. Instead of a demon, Camille summons plants and vines, scared she flees into the swamp and learns secrets about her past.
The author's strength is the diverse cast of characters this story develops. All of which are well developed and feel real and like their own persons and personalities. The author does not shoehorn queer and disabled characters into harmful stereotypes.
The art style is beautiful and the use of colour pairs well with the story. Even from the cover the stark red contrasting with the more cool toned background. I loved how each witchy family had their own aesthetic, it sets them apart and doesn't create any unnecessary confusions.
The plot is fast paced and very engaging. Moderate-high stakes and a fresh take on modern witches. Looking forward to reading future volumes.

I enjoyed this graphic novel a lot! It was fast paced, and the world building was easy to follow. I wish I could have seen even more about Camille's past. Looking forward to the others to come from this series. I am heavily intrigued and am already attached to so many of these characters!

This was a great witchy comic about a young woman in New Orleans in a complicated situation after surviving tragedy in her youth and being Brough up by her severe aunt. After her ritual goes wrong, she stays on at the manor without her aunt and learns more about herself, the other witch families, and their different relationships to magic and each other.
Look, you show me a black sheep doing her best with a shitty family and there's witches and she's sapphic?! I'm a happy gal.
The art and writing are great.
I had a really good time and I'm excited to get into the second volume!

I really liked the story. There's a lot of character growth with our main character as she discovers more about herself. It's witchy with many different magics included, I really like the way the magic system was briefly presented and I'm intrigued to learn more about all the different kinds. The art is beautiful and very well done it compliments the story perfectly. A really strong first Volume! I need to know how volume 2 is gonna go cause that cliff hanger has me intrigued!!!

Another approved NetGalley ARC! I remember reading this on Webtoon when it came out a few years ago and I was entranced. Seeing it in a more refined graphic novel makes my heart happy! These sapphic witches make me giddy and so does Toben and Beignet (the familiars). Breaking generational curses, found family, and a mysteriously deadly secret are some of the themes of this graphic novel series. I’m excited to see Camille (the FMC) grow as the novels continue. The art is so stunning as well and easily flowing dialogue that is easy to follow.

This graphic novel checked all my boxes. It’s a fast paced story about witches in New Orleans that is a fresh take on that genre. The magic systems are intriguing and fun without being complicated, the plot is interesting and fast paced, and the blossoming romance is sweet and exciting. The main character Camille goes through a lot of growth in the first volume and I’m looking forward to seeing where the story takes her as she learns more about herself and becomes more independent.
This graphic novel does include a lot of trauma that the min character experienced in her childhood that occurs both on and off page so I highly recommend checking trigger warnings before diving in.

I absolutely loved this story! Muted is the story of a young witch learning all about her powers and certain family secrets. Along the way she makes new friends, reconnects with old ones and begins to learn who she is when she lets go of harsh expectations.
I am obsessed with this story. I absolutely love Camille and her story line. Camille's story is so tragic in the beginning but she's a firecracker determined to become more then what's she's been trained to be.I'm really enjoy the supporting characters as well. I can't wait to see how some of these relationships play out.
I think this book was a wonderful introduction to the amazing story that is sure to come and I can't wait to get my hands on the rest of it.

Muted: Volume 1 is perfect for fans of sapphic witches (and plants!). Early on, it is apparent that our main character, Camille, hasn't had the easiest life. There is a lot of heaviness in her life due to a variety of things out of her control. Through it all there are bright spots we see. I absolutely adore Camille's familiar (just the cutest little woodpecker) that is by her side through sorting out the mysteries in her life. The art is absolutely stunning. I love the character designs (no "same face" syndrome here!) and I appreciate the diversity. I loved getting to know the magic system and see the world building which I suspect will continue through the series. Camille and most of the supporting cast are loveable, I found the pacing to be great (which can be harder with graphic novels), and the ending left me looking forward to reading the next volume. I get a strong sense of found-family and look forward to hopefully seeing more of that in the future.
Volume 1 appears to be just the start of Camille's story, and I cannot wait to see where things go. I see this Graphic Novel series quickly becoming a favorite of mine.

Muted: Volume 1 is perfect for fans of sapphic witches (and plants!). Early on, it is apparent that our main character, Camille, hasn't had the easiest life. There is a lot of heaviness in her life due to a variety of things out of her control. Through it all there are bright spots we see. I absolutely adore Camille's familiar (just the cutest little woodpecker) that is by her side through sorting out the mysteries in her life. The art is absolutely stunning. I love the character designs (no "same face" syndrome here!) and I appreciate the diversity. I loved getting to know the magic system and see the world building which I suspect will continue through the series. Camille and most of the supporting cast are loveable, I found the pacing to be great (which can be harder with graphic novels), and the ending left me looking forward to reading the next volume. I get a strong sense of found-family and look forward to hopefully seeing more of that in the future.
Volume 1 appears to be just the start of Camille's story, and I cannot wait to see where things go. I see this Graphic Novel series quickly becoming a favorite of mine.

If the fact that there are lesbians and witches isn't good enough for you then I don't know what else to tell you (joking). The book explores a lot about the mind of our protagonist, the sense of belonging, who we really are, intrapersonal relationships and grief.
While I was delighted with the story and want to read much more, I felt that at times the design changed or decayed a bit, at least in certain details.
I use a customized version of CAWPILE for rating.

Muted is a graphic novel that follows Camille, a witch. There are multiple witch families with different powers that we meet throughout the story.
The art style was really nice and especially the colour work was very well done.
The main issue that i have with this was that i found the pacing rather rushed. This made it feel a bit illogical as to why she would trust some people so quickly. I also felt that it ended quite abruptly. I understand that this is only volume 1, but it didn’t really stand on its own.
I will say i did enjoy the different families and the different types if magic. I also found the character designs to be strong and Camille was a likeable main character.
I simply wish I enjoyed this a bit more than i did.

I'm dying to discover more about these characters & their world. There was just enough back story about Camille & the tragedy surrounding the death of her mother & sister to leave me eagerly waiting for the next volume to get more answers,
There was so many things to love between the art & the story. I adored each witches familiars--from the foxes to Camille's woodpecker Toben & they fit their characters perfectly. My guess is the next volume will explore some of the darker themes hinted at in this volume & I am here for it.
I can't recommend this highly enough.

4.5 Muted was frankly fantastic the art was incredible the storytelling and lore fascinating. I was instantly entangled in the world. After reading this I deeply regret not reading it when it was avaliable for more content from the story and of course with not having to wait more than a week unless there was a hiatus. I am very excited for the next volumes especially to see how everything unravels and how the romance develops.

I really enjoyed this one! The world building was done so well, and the art style was easy to understand (it kind of reminded me of early 2000s cartoons). I love a sapphic, witchy story, and this one has all the best elements - familiars, witch families, mysterious back stories, coming-of-age, and, of course, queer characters. I can't wait to see where this one goes next.

I was so excited that I got an ARC for this graphic novel as it was already on my wishlist! I love a magical story and this one is just so fun and intriguing. Had some funny moments and a couple little twists! I am so excited to see what happens in future installments :)

Wow! I absolutely loved the start of this story, and I can't wait until volume 2 to see where it goes! All of the characters were interesting, the plot is great, I love that the characters have familiars, and the illustrations were absolutely gorgeous!

My 1150th review!
It is fitting it should be of a modern witchy comic of both darkness and light. Of horror and heart.
'Muted' is one of the newest witchy webcomics, and in 2025, its first volume is out in the world in paperback form. Different editions, publishing and republishing, birth and rebirth, they are exciting, breathtaking, stunning, transformative, hopeful things.
'Muted: Volume 1' is very dynamic and dramatic, and sometimes dark and bloody, but mostly it is colourful, funny, cute, enchanting, bold and beautiful. It deals with themes of trauma - generational, family, religious, personal, the works - tragedy, domestic abuse, elitism, classism, self-worth, and nature versus nurture (emphasis on the nature part).
Even with its darkness, 'Muted: Volume 1' is easygoing, easily and steadily paced, and easily accessible. The likeable and memorable characters certainly help the reader to ease in, and follow along the journey.
The journey of a lesbian witch's tragedy and coming-of-age tale.
Set in New Orleans, 'Muted' is about Camille Severin, a beautiful redhaired young woman who comes from a rich witch family that is so set in its archaic ways that it deals in coming-of-age rituals of bloodletting and summoning demons to get richer still. At least, that is how her aunt, the Matriarch Athalie, runs it.
When Camille was a child, her mother and twin sister died in a mysterious fire in a greenhouse, and she was raised by her abusive aunt Athalie, and her only friends and confidantes are her cousins Avaline (same age, and Athalie's daughter) and Silvia (older, and distant, though I only know she's a cousin from the blurb; it's not clear from the book itself). Plus her familiar, a woodpecker named Toben, who Athalie locked in a cage away from Camille for years. Birds are common familiars to the Severins.
Now, after a disastrous bloodletting ritual, more than ever Camille has to face up to her past, what her powers and magical affinity are, and who she truly is. Where she belongs. What part of her family she belongs.
What constitutes a family, anyway?
'It is hard to be different in a family like yours, I suppose. The Severin family has never been very good about different.'
Camille learns more about other witch families, and about herself, on her own, true coming-of-age journey of self-discovery, in different ways.
And not everyone has her best interests at heart, not just her aunt...
Witches be crafty.
But also kind of cute. And sassy.
Wait.
Hold up.
A redheaded lesbian hero with a tragic childhood involving an allegedly murdered mother and twin sister. Where have I heard that before?
Anyway, Camille is a great, complex young woman and heroine. As sweet, innocent, sad, scared and oppressed as she often is - not to mention closeted, in her natural powers and sexuality, and her sexuality is power - she seems to be shifting in her moral compass towards the end of the volume, growing darker and more secretive in her development, as a witch and a person. I hope she is self-aware enough not to turn into her aunt, though the self-awareness angle does appear to be the case in this comic, based on its reflections and introspections, and its generational trauma subject matter. Its dark matter.
On a lighter side, Camille is occasionally, surprisingly funny and sassy when she wants to be.
My other favourite characters are: Silvia, a Severin with a facial scar, who wears a veil of mourning at the beginning, and who acts as a housekeeper, and contrary to Athalie's wishes, she is kind, caring, and protective of Camille - could be even more excellent and complex than her; Nyra, a woman from the Dupre witch family, and Camille's love interest, who is literally fiery, has cans of attitude and sass, and takes no bullshit; and Nana Fleur, or Harriet, an old matriarch from the Leroux witch family, who I won't reveal much about due to spoilers, but she is the sweetest, kindest, wonderful-est old lady ever.
I swear, there are no human male characters in 'Muted: Volume 1', at least not present or living. It's fantastic.
It also didn't escape my notice that the evil elitist Severin family are all white, whilst the majority of the other, "poorer" witch families we meet are BIPOC women. And they have disabled members, and members with differing body types. There is a stigma against redheads as well, which further alienates Camille from her darkhaired family (though her cousin Avaline has dyed blond hair).
'Muted: Volume 1' reminds me of an adult version of 'Sabrina the Teenage Witch' (no, not 'Chilling Adventures', it is far better than that), and Disney's 'Encanto'. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Miranda Mundt was influenced by more than a smattering of Disney films when working on their dark witchy comic. The lovely and beautiful artwork is similar to the classics (there're touches of manga, too), and I see 'Cinderella', 'The Princess and the Frog' (New Orleans, swamps, shadowy figures, dark magic, tarot cards, hello!), and 'The Little Mermaid' (for spoilery reasons, that have nothing to do with heroines with long red hair) here. Nyra's pet name for Camille is "princess". I can't unsee it.
'Muted' is one of the better witch webcomics I've read. The others I recommend are 'Witchy', 'Unfamiliar', and 'Les Normaux'. All are hugely diverse, unique, unforgettable, well written, and adorable.
Maybe I'm a weirdo, but I don't find 'Muted', labelled under 'horror', to be that scary. Though it could definitely count as a psychological horror and thriller, with its themes of abuse and psychological trauma. Fragmentation is one of its motifs.
It contains great quotes - wonderful, punching lines of dialogue - to boot. A witch's boot, that is. Under a long skirt.
I'm not sure if I'll continue following the series, despite the hell of a mystery and that cliffhanger, and the adorable bonus chapter at the end. But the first published volume is a keeper.

4.5 stars – I am absolutely in love with everything that is this graphic novel!
Storywise I am completely on board. The story is set in a super interesting world, with heaps of potential for expanding and diving deeper, and I can’t wait. And while it hasn’t dealt with it much yet you can feel the setup for the more politically intricate themes. I’m fully loving the witchy vibes, and the way it has set up the magic system where different families possess different abilities, further creating super interesting dynamics. And the characters are so well rounded and compelling in different ways – I'm itching to learn more about each of them.
In general, the story does such a strong balancing act between the dark and light themes and moments throughout the volume. You feel the moments that are both eerie and sad, but also that provide hope and strength.
Also, I cannot not mention that the art is so gorgeous. Sometimes I have to just pause and stare some more at how beautiful it looks. I literally can’t even. I need the chapter pages made into bookmarks or something! I want to look at them all the time.
Thankfully the publisher kindly provided me with the next volume as well, so I can get straight into it!

Muted reads like an original fairytale, carrying an immersive sense of magic that flows through every page and illustration. Mundt’s art possesses the lush, atmospheric intensity of some of my favorite graphic novel illustrations, calling to mind the intense, dark art of Molly Knox Ostertag’s The Witch Boy, and with all of the complex characters. Camille is a truly wonderful protagonist who I couldn’t help but root for—her genuine heart and desire to find somewhere she belongs made me immediately like her, and she propels this story forward. She’s often flawed and confused, but that makes her even better, making her someone I don’t just want to succeed, but can empathize with myself. I also love this entire world, augmented by the illustrations—it feels so close to ours and yet utterly more magical. This series is definitely one I’ll want to be keeping an eye on!
