As Mark & Linda Louw tell their story of sacrifice, they invite fellow Christians to share their renewed perspective on loss and gain in the kingdom of God.
I'm very uncomfortable with the fact that the author completely avoids confronting the fact that Mark Louw was serving in the South African military as an officer during the height of apartheid. How, exacly, can voluntarily serving a government with policies like that square with Christian commitment? There is no hint in the book that either Mark or his wife Linda were at all discomfited about this. I certainly hope they were, and that the author just didn't discuss it. But Gaines, as a Christian ethicist, does his readers a serious disservice by failing to even bring up the issue. It is especially surprising in view of the fact that the Louws went on to be missionaries in West Africa. Surely Louw must have had some explaining to do there...
