At twenty-two, Elena Bradford has never met a man who made her consider marriage. But when her father dies and leaves the family deeply in debt, Elena becomes their only hope. Her mother uses their last funds to take Elena and her younger sister to Graham Springs, Kentucky, where people find healing by drinking the mineral spring water and healthy recreation through the many daily activities--including dances almost every evening.
As her mother schemes to find Elena a wealthy husband, Elena finds herself drawn to two men her mother would never consider. Charming artist Kirby Frazier spends his days drawing and painting the guests, but his real mission is to find a wealthy bride to finance his dream to go west. Melancholy Andrew Harper has come to Graham Springs in need of healing after a broken heart.
When a beautiful young lady shows up at the Springs with no chaperone and a story that seems suspicious, nearly everyone is charmed and intrigued. But when an unexpected tragedy occurs, Elena, Kirby, and Andrew will all be faced with decisions of life, love, and loyalty.
Ann H. Gabhart grew up on a farm in Kentucky. At the age of ten, she started dreaming of writing stories others would want to read. That dream has come true as she's published over thirty-five novels. She and her husband have three children married to three beautiful in-law children who have gifted her nine grandchildren. She still lives on a farm not far from where she grew up. She loves playing with her grandkids, walking with her dogs, reading, and, of course, writing. Her Shaker books, set in her fictional Shaker village of Harmony Hill in the 1800's, are popular with readers. The Outsider was a Christian Fiction Book Award Finalist in 2009. Her Heart of Hollyhill books are Small Town, America books set in the 1960's. Angel Sister, a Rosey Corner book set during the Great Depression, was a best-seller and was followed up by two more stories about the Merritt sisters. She keeps her stories in Kentucky and has enjoyed going to the Kentucky Appalachian Mountains for some stories including These Healing Hills and Along a Storied Trail. And if you like mysteries, you can try her Hidden Springs Mysteries published under the author name, A.H. Gabhart. Visit Ann's website http://annhgabhart.com to find out more. Bible verses from the Gospels influence Gabhart’s story, reminding us that God needs to be a part of our day, especially when we feel alone and incapable of reaching our full potential.
There are three threads running through this 5-star novel: healing, pretence, and constraint.
Firstly, I loved Gabhart’s focus on healing. Each visitor has come to Graham Springs, Kentucky to take advantage of the waters and receive healing. For some, a heart has been broken by grief, for others it’s been fractured by betrayal. Regardless, the rejuvenation allows each to leave whole.
I also appreciated Gabhart highlighting pretence and reminding readers that pretending to be who we aren’t rarely works out in the intended way. Although the readers know the guests’ financial situation, I was still drawn in, waiting to see if the deceptive protagonists knew the roles they were playing would have to end and if they ended satisfactorily.
I’m always drawn to a story where a character feels constrained by society and desires to break free from expectations. Gabhart was able to capitalize on vulnerability and independence and play each trait off the other to produce a compelling narrative. She showcased the beauty of true love, loving the one you marry, and the concept of leaving our worries in God’s hands.
Perhaps most of all, I appreciated the places where the narrative stopped me in my tracks and made me reread and contemplate or understand my reaction. For example:
“Love is for those who can afford it. Or those who care nothing about having the finer things in life.”
“A woman willing to marry for money rather than love is hardly a lady.”
The references to birds (Bobwhite) and birdsong were the Easter eggs I was expecting, the dancing lady brought a smile, and the discussion about being a stingy bloomer will stay with me. This wonderful story featuring a love triangle between Andrew Harper, Kirby Frazier, and Elena Bradford is one you’ll want on your reading list.
I was gifted this copy by Revell and was under no obligation to provide a review.
This was a sweet story that I enjoyed very much! While it took me a little bit to gather my bearings, once I got familiarized with the storyline and characters, I couldn't put it down. It has mystery, intrigue, and heartfelt romance...all things I love.
Speaking of which, this story features a love triangle/love pentagon-of-sorts, and typically I'm not a fan of those types of stories, but I'm finding them rather compelling as of late. And this one was no different! Though I knew pretty early on who I would prefer for Elena to marry, Gabhart did a good job of making all eligible gentleman likable.
My only critique is that I wish Elena could have had even *more* time getting to know (insert lover's name here) better before she told him she loved him. But then again, I'm more of a slow burn girl :)
I think my favorite character was the General, though I appreciated all of them for different reasons. While I still have some questions in regard to Vanessa, this story delivered in all the ways I expected it to. I'm grateful I had the opportunity to read it early!
Thank you, Bethany House Publishers and Revel for a copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
Behind all the pursuit, pressure, and polite Southern charm, this story is really about one thing: a woman learning to trust God with everything when everything’s falling apart.
Set at a resort known for its “healing waters,” the story quietly invites readers to see where true healing actually comes from.
Elena isn’t out here chasing fairytales. She’s trying to keep her family afloat without losing herself in the process. But what I appreciated most? Her strength didn’t come from sass or self-sufficiency—it came from surrender. Little by little, prayer by prayer.
“She couldn’t solve her problems tonight. Tomorrow would bring whatever it brought, and she would face it with the Lord’s help. With His love.”
That right there—that’s where the whole story turns for me. Because haven’t we all had those “Lord, I can’t fix this” nights?
I loved that this was about a woman waking up to the truth that God’s love is steady, even when everything else is shaky. That love looks different than we think. Sometimes it's not romantic. Sometimes it’s hard. Sometimes it asks us to give up the very thing we thought would save us.
And yeah… some of those moments between Elena and her mother? Whew. Like sandpaper on the heart. But it’s the rough edges that show how far God’s willing to go to shape us. And how often He uses people we don’t understand to get us there.
“She did believe the Lord loved her… Did she have any of that kind of sacrificial love for her family?”
That question doesn’t just belong to Elena. That one’s got teeth. It’ll sit with you.
This story reminded us that God doesn’t just show up in church pews and quiet times—He shows up in broken families, confusing emotions, and those decisions you make with tears in your eyes and prayers on your lips.
If you’re looking for a faith-first historical read that balances heartache, humor, and hope—this is it. And if you're like me, you’ll want to linger a bit longer after the last page, just to soak in what the Lord might still be whispering.
I received a digital ARC of this book from the author. I am not required to write a positive review in any way or for any reason. The Pursuit of Elena Bradford is a historical Christian fiction set on a luxury resort in Kentucky. The story basically begins as they are travelling by stagecoach to the resort--Elena, her mother, and younger sister. They are joined by a few men, including an artist who has a canvas with him.
We immediately see Elena drawn to the artist who is heading to the same resort as the family. She's an artist too and feels "seen" for her work as more than just scribbles/doodles. He's also young and she's being pushed to marry by her mother.
It's that pushing by the mother that sets up the rest of the story. We learn this is a make-it-or-break-it trip for the family. No fortune left--all depends on Elena finding a husband. Something she is LOATHE to do...but understands it's her duty.
Throughout the course of the book there are two love interests for Elena...or maybe it's three... (wink)
Her experiences with each of the men is basically what the whole story revolves around. there are...four points of view-Elena, her sister, and two of the suitors. There is a smidge of mystery tossed in too.
So all in all. It's 3.5 stars for me. I just couldn't connect with the characters. But I'll do 4 stars for the online counts. It was just so-so. I read so much that this book just felt flat. then it felt RUSHED so rushed in that set of chapters. I mean--who WAS the mysterious lady?
*Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for an ARC of this book. All opinions are 100% my own.
The Pursuit of Elena Bradford is a wonderful story of a selfless woman out to save her family and two men vying for her affection.
I loved how each story unfolded. How Elena realized that others see her very differently than she sees herself. The unexpected twists with the general, Juanity, Ivy, and Vanessa.
There was a lot of world building at the start of the book that made me want to visit the springs myself!
The little touches of prayer, Bible verses, and other themes of faith were added naturally and organically.
There's not a whole lot I can say about the romance aspect without giving too much away but just know the romance unfolded very sweetly and carefully...in more ways than one.
If you're looking for a unique historical romance with a subtle mystery subplot, I would definitely recommend this book!

My favorite book by this author to date that I've read. I loved the romance and the light mystery and intrigue to the storyline. I fell in love with Elena and felt the love triangle really worked in this story. The author had me guessing until almost the end who she was going to end up with. I'm glad Elena chose the one I would have chosen.
*thank you to the publisher for a complimentary copy. All thoughts are my own.
Graham Springs is such an elegant and magical place where people come together for healing and romance. There was so much romance here for Elena as she has three different men in pursuit of her. The reader is left wondering whether she will choose for duty or for love. The relationship between Ivy and her sister was so special. Sisters have such a bond and it was so nice to see in this story. Princess Cinderella was the best!
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the arc. The opinions are my own.
This is an amazing book filled with suspense, intrigue, a mystery, and more! Most of the book is set in Graham Springs, a beautiful health resort. I could easily picture myself strolling through the garden and getting my portrait drawn! It reminds me of Saratoga, NY, with its healing waters.
The characters are written brilliantly! Ann Gabhart always writes characters that I become invested in. It's really hard to pick a favorite, but I'd go with Elena. She's a no-nonsense kind of woman. Despite the immense pressure from her mother to marry a rich man, she refuses to settle. Real love is what she's looking for. General Dawson is my second favorite. He's lonely and hoping to find love at Graham Springs. Honorable mention to the cat, Princess Cinderella; a true hero!
I really enjoyed the author's note! History amazes me all the time, especially the story of the woman who died at Graham Springs mysteriously.
I was provided a complimentary copy of the book from Revell through Interviews and Reviews via Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
“Elena Bradford had yet to meet the man to make her consider marriage.”
I lived in Kentucky for thirty years, the next county over from where the events of The Pursuit of Elena Bradford take place, but I never knew about Graham Springs. I wish I *had* learned about it sooner because it was an intriguing place with a now century-old super fascinating mystery, and I would have totally dug into this history and undoubtedly fallen down several rabbit holes in the process. Thankfully, Ann H. Gabhart has brought Graham Springs vividly to life on the pages of this book, along with a host of compelling characters that beckoned me to walk with them through the gardens, along the lake, around the rifle range or through the resort itself.
Elena Bradford, as you might guess from the title, is the main protagonist whose reluctant quest for a husband we follow through this story. Her family’s dramatically-altered financial situation requires her – per her mother’s strict orders – to marry someone with enough funds to pay off their debts. However, Gabhart also delightfully gives us three other perspectives in the narrative – Elena’s little sister Ivy (a bright and amiable 16-year-old in love with a boy back home), Andrew Harper (a jilted groom with a broken heart), and Kirby Frazier (a charming artist hoping to fund his journey west). I really enjoyed getting into each characters’ head this way, and I easily fell in love with all four, each for different reasons.
Elena is a pleasing blend of practical and creative, keeping a cool head in the midst of upheaval but also preferring to lose herself in her sketchbook among the flowers (and if a cat should also come along, all the better). And Ivy – she’s just so pure of heart and she feels deeply, and she always made me smile. As for the men… I’m normally not a fan of love triangles but I didn’t mind this one for some reason. I think because I had a clear choice in my mind from almost the beginning as to whether I wanted Elena to end up with Kirby or Andrew so I viewed the other man as less of a threat and more of another ally. I’m not even going to tell you what I liked about each hero so I don’t let my bias show between them haha, but I will say it turned out like I hoped, though not necessarily as I expected. And then there’s the enigmatic Vanessa… but I’ll let you discover her for yourself.
Bottom Line: The Pursuit of Elena Bradford by Ann H. Gabhart transports readers to a lovely respite for what ails you, tucked away in the rolling hills of 1840s Kentucky. With characters you’ll want to befriend and some surprising twists to keep you on your toes, the story keeps you invested in the outcome and cheering for as many happily-ever-afters as possible. The romance is so heart-and-soul-affirming, and I was touched by both Elena’s and Ivy’s walks with God and especially Elena’s surrender to His will. There’s even a little dash of suspense that raised my pulse and a based-on-real-events mystery that captured my imagination (and had me googling articles about it late into the night). I enjoyed all the different elements to the plot as well as the compelling history and the author’s warm writing voice, but more than anything I appreciated the gentle spiritual truths that my heart absorbed while reading Elena’s journey.
(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book)
As always this author does an impeccable job of drawing you into the story and making you feel like you are a part of the journey. From the beautiful cover that captures your attention to the last page I was totally engrossed. I love how the history of Graham Springs is brought to life and the healing waters of the springs as I had never heard of this one located in Kentucky. We find ourselves on a harrowing stagecoach ride where we meet several important characters that shape the story from the secrets being kept to the pretense it will grab your attention. It is nice to watch the characters grow and develop as you turn the pages to unlock the secrets and sometimes hidden desires of their hearts. I loved the wisdom of General Dawson and his matchmaking qualities. He was a character I wanted to know more. From the ballroom dances to strolling the grounds you will feel like you have taken a step back in time. I especially enjoyed the mystery that is included that added an interesting facet to the story. This story is a winner in my opinion of how faith, family, truth, and love are the ingredients for success. As the old saying goes, this story is the whole ball of wax. Make sure you read the author’s notes at the end as it contains information you don’t want to miss. I highly recommend putting this on the top of your next read pile. I received a complimentary copy from the author/publisher. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.
Elena Bradford, sister Ivy and their mother travel to Graham Springs, Kentucky after Mr Bradford died and left them in financial distress. As Elena pursues a rich husband to rescue them, Andrew Harper and Kirby Frazier are on a pursuit of their own. Written in an engaging way, this story encompasses the potential encountered at this posh resort. Based on a real place and some real people, Ms Gabhart takes us on an intriguing journey of seeking love in spite of obligations. There is even a real mystery that teases your mind with possibilities. The characters are each trying to prove themselves: one as a viable artist, one that he is worthy after a broken heart, one who needs to see beyond physical beauty to the beauty within and one that marriage can be forged from love and not convenience. Through beautiful prose, the author pens a story full of faith and promises of something better. It is always a pleasure to read a thoughtful, historically accurate story written by an accomplished author. *A complimentary copy of this book was provided by Revell on behalf of the author and via NetGalley. Another great historical fiction novel from Ann Gabhart! This book follows Elena Bradford, whose family's financial situation becomes known to be severe when her father dies. When Elena's mother hatches a plot, Elena, her mother and her sister head to Graham Springs where her mother hopes Elena can snag a wealthy suitor who will pull them from their dire straits. What ends up happening none of them would have ever expected.
I thoroughly enjoyed the story line of this tale and the character development that occurred through the story - not only for Elena, but also many others including her mother and sister. Elena finds herself drawn to 2 men that her mother would never approve of, and finds herself concerned when the suitor at the top of her mother's list is old enough to be her grandfather. Elena's character growth throughout the story is absolutely stellar - not only emotionally but spiritually. Though I would say this one was primarily a character-driven novel, there was plenty of plot included, primarily through the story of the young woman who showed up out of the blue surrounded by mystery and tragedy. I was equally entranced by the author's note at the end that explained that pieces of that story happened in real life as well. I always love when actual historical events that I'd not been aware of are found in the pages of a novel!
Though not all of the elements found closure in the story, the important pieces did and the ending was wholly satisfying. This was a thoroughly enjoyable read and I would easily recommend to fans of historical fiction with threads of both mystery and romance. Special thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an advance e-copy of this novel. I was under no obligation to provide a review and the thoughts contained herein are my own.
Excellent story! I enjoyed this story so much; it is so well-written. It was interesting learning about Graham Springs.
I liked all the different POV's and how each of them grew and changed for the better. I liked the setting, and that the story kind of reminded me of a Jane Austen book.
As much as I wanted to love The Pursuit of Elena Bradford as much as the other books I have read by Ann H. Gabhart this one just wasn’t for me. I just couldn’t get in to it and after reading 50% I have decided to stop. So unfortunately for me this one is a DNF.
Thank you Revell and NetGalley for this eARC in exchange for an honest review.
I've previously read Ann Gabhart and I chose this book because of the author, more than the description. In this regard the book met my expectations. I deeply appreciated Elena's character growth. Though she had no desire to be married and was content with a "small" life as a spinster in the family home, she was thrown into a journey that challenged her assumptions and shook up her complacency. Elena gains a new perspective on the relationships around her and her own place in the world. Kirby and Andrew are also characters that show considerable growth in this novel and I applaud Gabhart's skill in taking us on a journey of development.
I also appreciated that I could actually place myself in every scene. The descriptions were natural and engaging. It's not every author who can take you inside the character's heart and mind while also placing you clearly in the physical space around them.
On the other hand, I felt like this novel suffered a bit from an identity crisis. Midway through the novel I wasn't sure what the driving narrative was meant to be. I assumed it was Elena and her relational choices, but then a mysterious young woman shows up and steals the show. All of a sudden the novel becomes focused on the mystery and all the other story-lines take a backseat. I understand from the postscript that the author was including real historical events, but honestly it felt like the book was trying to accomplish too much and couldn't decide which story to tell. Both narratives were interesting and Gabhart did a fair job of trying to weave things together, but personally I think the competing narratives disrupted the flow of the book, especially as the mystery remained a mystery and left me feeling a bit dissatisfied with a loose thread that felt like it hadn't belonged in the first place.
This book has a little bit of everything.
Romance - yes.
Adventure - yes.
Mystery - yes.
Family, values, and identity - yes.
Would I recommend the book? Yes.
Is it Gabhart's best? I don't think so, but it's still good.
Do you have a favorite vacation spot? One place I think is wonderful is Mackinac Island in Michigan. It’s a beautiful and unforgettable place full of history and natural beauty. My great great grandparents met on the island working there one summer and married.
Elena Bradford’s father has recently died, and her mother discovered that he left them greatly in debt. The only way she can think of to save the family from destitution is to find a wealthy husband for her “old maid” daughter, twenty-two-year-old Elena. Her younger daughter, Ivy, is the beauty of the family, but is considered too young for this task. They travel to a resort, Graham Springs, Kentucky for the summer. While there, Elena works on her artwork and meets two men who will not meet her mother’s standards. Kirby Frazier is a penniless artist, while Andrew Harper has come to the resort to repair his wounded heart after being left at the altar. Will Elena find love, or will she marry an older wealthy suitor to save her family? When a mysterious woman arrives alone at the resort, her fate will change the Elena’s path.
My thoughts on this novel: • I always love a good love triangle and the Elena, Kirby, and Andrew love triangle was a good story. I liked the resolution.
• The story had an interesting mystery about halfway through and also some action/suspense towards the end of the novel.
• I loved the setting of the Graham Springs resort in Kentucky. I didn’t realize this was a real place until the end of the novel. The author’s note was so interesting. I was especially fascinated to learn that the mysterious death was a true mystery that was never solved.
• This was a slower read for me, but I still enjoyed the story. It seemed to slow down in the middle for me, but once the mysterious beautiful Vanessa arrives alone at the resort, the action picked up.
• I loved the focus on healing throughout the novel. Elena, her sister Ivy, and her mother are still healing from her father’s death. Andrew is healing from his fiancée’s betrayal. Other characters have similar stories of coming to the resort to heal.
• I loved the beauty of nature that was woven throughout the story.
• Cats were a key feature. Elena must leave her beloved cat at home and then a mysterious cat at the resort helps her to survive a misadventure.
• I loved how there was dancing every night at the resort. It sounded like such a wonderful place to visit.
Overall, the Pursuit of Elena Bradford by Ann H. Gabhart is a delightful historical romance and a perfect read to bring along on any vacation.

A heartfelt thank you to @annhgabhart @revellfiction and @austenprose for the #gifted book. It’s truly a gem!
After the death of her father leaves her family in financial turmoil, Elena, alongside her sister and mother, embarks on a journey to Graham Springs, Kentucky. They are in search of a wealthy husband for Elena to rescue them from their debts. As fate would have it, she becomes entangled with two intriguing men, each on their own quest. When tragedy strikes, the mystery deepens, pulling everyone into an unexpected mystery.
Set in 1842, this novel immerses you in its richly detailed world, making you feel as if you’ve stepped back in time. The narrative masterfully weaves together historical elements, mystery, romance, and the complexities of family bonds.
The characters are exceptionally well-developed and relatable, making it impossible not to root for them. The storyline is layered and flows seamlessly, keeping you captivated until the very last page. This clean historical novel is infused with hope, heartache, and just the right touch of humor. What begins as a tragedy evolves into a gripping mystery that captivates the imagination.
This beautifully written work features vibrant characters who bring each scene to life. Fans of historical romance should not miss the opportunity to add this remarkable story to their reading list. I wholeheartedly recommend this book for lovers of mystery, historical narratives, and exquisite storytelling. The book is available now.
I enjoyed this one! Clean, intriguing & with a thread of faith, it kept me engaged from the beginning. I am glad Elena went with the man I favored from the start, though I also appreciated that Gabhart portrayed neither Frazier nor Harper as being necessarily either the "good guy" or the "bad guy." Each had his own flaws and strengths, past hurts he was getting over, and a future he dreamed of having. It made each more realistic and allowed me to feel for both.
I also liked that Gabhart attempted to preserve a part of history through her representation of the "mystery woman"; however, it would have been nice to have seen a little more resolution with this part of the plot.
This is the second of Gabhart's books that I have read, and I look forward to exploring more of her works in the very near future!
~I was gifted my copy of The Pursuit of Elena Bradford by Revell. I was not required to leave a review, and all opinions expressed here are my own.~
I know the books by this gifted author will always be a treat to read. This one is no exception. She has a way of writing from the heart of the characters and drawing readers in. What begins as a simple yet engaging story slowly intensifies and deepens, taking the reader on a mental and emotional journey you don’t want to end. This intriguing tale is based on a real place and an actual occurrence. I so wanted to know who the elusive Vanessa really was. In this novel we have history and mystery, drama and love interests and artists too. I think it would make a great book club choice too. I received a copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own. #ThePursuitofElenaBradford #NetGalley
Be captivated from the beginning in this unexpected literal jewel. Elena is a heroine we can all relate to, and the love triangle, sprinkled with a healthy dose of mystery, spread over a Kentucky landscape, is why this marvel will clearly make my top 5 books of the year! I felt as if I was given a gift reading this book!
I'll be honest, love triangles are not typically my cup of tea... but this story drew me in right from the beginning and while a love triangle certainly plays a big part of this story, I found that it was done well and I really didn't mind it. This story was a fantastic blend of historical elements, a hint of mystery, romance... and family relationships as well. I really loved that little bit of mystery that was added in... and was fascinated to learn that this mysterious woman and the tragedy that happens in the story were actually based on real events. Finding this out in the author's notes at the end only made me appreciate this story all that much more. It was a beautiful book that kept me intrigued from start to finish and one that fans of Christian historical romance are sure to want to check out.
**ARC received via Netgalley for consideration. All opinions are my own.
This book finished strong and made me smile. I especially liked the prayerfulness and faith of Andrew - something he got from his Grandfather. Part romance. Part mystery. The characters are well developed and very different from one another . The search for a husband for Elena was a bit overdone for my taste. The pace was slow until about the 50%. By the time the mystery part of the book was in full swing I was hooked. Recommend for those looking for a clean romance with mysterious happenings added in.
This book gave me the feeling of Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer, with a bit of Agatha Christie mixed in it. So good and masterfully written! Set in Kentucky during the 1840s, Elena Bradford is a twenty-two-year-old spinster who has the heavy burden of saving the family from debts and poverty by getting a wealthy man to propose to her while she, her mother and younger sister, enjoy the summer season at Graham Springs, a luxury resort where only wealthy families have the pleasure of enjoying time of leisure and benefit from its healing waters. There, she meets and gets to know two men who will pursue her and make her heart skip: Kirby Frazier, the charming and outgoing artist, or Andrew Harper, the melancholic sensitive man who is nursing a broken heart. The three -no make that four including Ivy (Elena’s sister)- POV made the story all the more interesting. There was not the typical wonderful hero and heroine whom you expect to get their HEA at the end. This book has a love triangle that will keep you guessing for the most part of the book, rooting for one suitor, then for the other, as you get to know them. I had my favorite from the beginning, I have to say, and I wasn’t disappointed at the end. Love triangle is not my favorite trope (I like knowing who are the perfect match from the beginning), but this book made me discover the delight in getting to know each character better and the enjoyable intrigue of guessing who the perfect match will be. The story starts with a fast pace reuniting the main characters in a daring adventure as they travel to Springs. That made me engage in the story from the start. One of the greatest things about the book is the complexity and growth of the characters: each one with their own needs, struggles, and particular backgrounds. The way the author takes you inside the mind and heart of each one was deep and relatable. I felt their fears and insecurities. The pressure of a dire financial situation, made them act in deceiving ways, even if with good intentions. In different intensity, I rooted for each and all of them to find their own HEA, even while I knew that not all of them could get their wishes fulfilled in the way they expected. It’s a story about healing and seeing your value through God’s eyes, and not putting your security in social expectations, appearances or money, but in God’s will, which is easier said and done, especially during an era in which women depended of finding a good match to secure their future. There’s also a faith thread about the way God answers our prayers: not always how we desire or expect, but we have to trust it will be in the best way, for He really knows what is best for us. Also, the way He gives us signs of His presence, first through the beauty of Creation, which can be particularly enjoyed in this beautiful setting with its lake, lush gardens and the natural surroundings, but also through small and apparently common things. The characters are all genuine, and I loved that. They may not be perfect, but they are so human with their flaws and different personality traits. I love how they grow through their journeys and change their way of seeing things. Elena’s personal journey was definitely my favorite and I learned many things through her. The role of the mysterious cat was unique. I love cats, especially mine, so that made me relate even more to Elena, aside from her love of books too. The mysterious and intriguing part of the plot made the book even more captivating. I was so surprised to find out that it is actually based on a true story! The place is real too. The author note at the end was fascinating and helped me understand the ending better. The secondary characters, such as Ivy, Vanessa, the Coronel, made the book brighter with their genuine personalities. The way the author describes them, makes them worm their way straight to your heart. Loved the relationship between sisters Elena and Ivy, especially how their bond grows. I highly recommend this story! If you like Historical Romances with a touch of mystery and intrigue, and a faith inspired message, you have to read this one! I received a complimentary copy from the Publisher but was not required to write a positive review. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.
“I will never look at these roses the same. Now, in my mind, they will forever be Elena’s roses.”
Mystery, a young woman caught between two very different men, & roses… I thoroughly enjoyed The Pursuit of Elena Bradford. The vivid beauty of Graham’s Springs, Kentucky is brought to life in this slow burn, historical romance as Elena Bradford feels the weight of her family’s future on her shoulders. Told from four different perspectives, this unique, heartfelt story kept me quickly turning the pages to see if Elena would choose the artist, the grieving man spurned by his fiancée, or the old wealthy general.
When Elena Bradford’s father passed away, he left crushing debt behind. Now Elena’s mother has come up with one last ditch scheme to marry her eldest daughter off to a wealthy gentleman to save the family’s future. She’s taking Elena & her younger sister Ivy to the Graham’s Springs famed for its curative mineral waters. On the way, they meet two handsome gentleman, Mr. Kirby Frazier, a talented artist hoping to get a job at the resort, & the quiet, melancholic Mr. Andrew Harper.
While initially opposed to her mother’s scheme, she finds the resort & beautiful grounds charming as well as the two men who’ve shown an interest in her. Though her mother’s constantly criticizing her, she begins to see herself with new eyes through Kirby & Andrew. However, her mother is pushing her towards the wealthy, much older General Dawson.
When a beautiful young woman arrives unaccompanied, she’s surrounded by mystery. She doesn’t seem to be who she claims to be & when she collapses at a dance & pronounced dead, suspicions are raised that it could be murder. Elena finds herself in a precarious situation while investigating the mystery, & her only hope is that someone will rescue her in time.
Once Elena & her family arrive in Graham’s Springs, I was completely invested in the story. I enjoyed reading from four POVs & was kept guessing as to whom Elena would end up with. The mystery added another intriguing layer.
Elena’s a budding artist & it’s hard for her to resist the charming, talented Kirby. But Kirby has his own agenda. I especially enjoyed the romance between Andrew & Elena. Though Andrew suffered from a broken heart, he soon realizes that his relationship with his former fiancée pales in comparison to the friendship & joy he feels with Elena. They have a close connection from the beginning & I loved the time they spent together at dawn among the roses.
This is a delightful, standalone, slow burn historical romance with a touch of mystery & faith. The characters were memorable & I’d love to read several more of their stories. Highly recommend to inspirational historical romance fans. I received an advanced copy from the publisher with no expectation of a positive review. All opinions are my own & voluntarily provided. 4-4.5 stars!
First sentence: Elena Bradford had yet to meet the man to make her consider marriage. She would, her mother assured her when Elena was younger. She should, her mother insisted when Elena turned twenty. She must, her mother demanded when Elena's father died. By then Elena was twenty-two.
Premise/plot: After the death of her father, Elena and her sister--along with their mother--go to Graham Springs, Kentucky, to a health resort to 'catch' husbands. The goal: marry Elena off to a rich man and allow Ivy to marry for love. Elena as a 'spinster' is unsure she'll be able to catch a man--wealthy or not. And she despises her mother's intentions though she can't really stop her mother from scheming. There are several men who could prove potential love interests. Elena finds herself attracted to two: an artist with dreams of going West to paint landscapes and a recently jilted man (I believe his family's business is raising horses???). Kirby and Andrew are night and day different. Kirby is EAGER to marry anyone who can give him enough money for a ticket west. If she's pleasant, charming, a fellow artist that would be a bonus. But he can tolerate anyone--or thinks he can. Andrew is more reserved and is unsure if he'll ever marry. However he finds himself falling for Elena. Meanwhile, we have a scheming mother, a determined sister (she is in love with a man back home), and a MYSTERY GUEST that dies on the same day she arrives after making quite an entrance. Ivy (the sister) may just have witnessed something she shouldn't....
My thoughts: I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this one. Granted, I could have done without the twenty-two equals spinster, old maid trope. But I loved the story and the characters. I found myself underlining so many sentences! Which is something I usually don't do with Christian fiction!
Quotes: No boy when she was younger, no man now, had ever truly pursued her. Or was it that she had never given love a chance? She couldn't solve her problems tonight. Tomorrow would bring whatever it brought, and she would face it with the Lord's help. With his love. She pulled the thought of that love up over her like a blanket and slept. A woman willing to marry for money rather than love is hardly a lady. "Dear Father in heaven," she whispered after Ivy and her mother left to take the waters. "If there is a man like that here, please let me meet him. One I can love as a wife should love her husband. I realize I've done nothing to deserve love, but love isn't something to earn. It just is." Sometimes we need to do more than hope. We need to add actions to that hope of friendship.
Ann H. Gabhart has a way of making her characters come alive and burrow into your mind so that you find yourself thinking about them even after putting the book down. If you happen to be reading this book prior to going to a prayer meeting, try to put the book out of your mind until you get home so you won’t embarrass yourself by requesting prayer at church for Elena who finds herself in quite a predicament several times. Yes, the story will grab your attention and hold it until the end. Elena, with her mother and her younger sister, had come to Graham Springs for the summer so that Elena might attract a suitable, wealthy marriage partner in order to keep their family out of the poorhouse. General Dawson was quite the character as he sought to dance with almost every lady present at the balls held every evening at the famous Springs Hotel. I typically focus more on suspense and action, but this book is billed more as a romance. However, I found enough mystery, suspense, and action woven with the romance to keep my attention and interest at a high level. Even the romance had a certain element of mystery about it as each of the main characters attempted to find information about potential partners without being obvious about it. Somehow, even a cat got in on the action. I got a chuckle when Elena was in a jam and the cat brought her a dead mouse, apparently thinking she was about to starve and would enjoy the same kind of food that it liked. Of particular interest to me is the fact that my wife, our daughter, and I lived about a half-hour driving distance from the former site of the Springs Hotel in the early 1970s and never knew of its existence. My point is that the book is about an actual historical place with a real historical character, Dr. Christopher Columbus Graham. How interesting to learn some more Kentucky history from a novel. I suppose I was much more interested in the role Daniel Boone played in Kentucky history than the role of the various healing springs around that area where people went to take the waters and look for romance. I enjoyed the story. I received an advance copy of this book from the author. This is my honest review. All opinions are strictly my own.
“Let me fall in love with the man of my choice with no thought of my mother. Of my sister and brothers,” Elena prays in Ann H. Gabhart’s novel, The Pursuit of Elena Bradford.
~ What ~ This three-hundred-and-fifty-two-page paperback targets those interested in a historical romance set in Graham Springs, Kentucky. With no profanity, topics of fighting, physical abuse, and death may not be appropriate for immature readers. The ending includes an excerpt from another book by the writer, acknowledgments, the author’s biography, and advertisements.
In this story based in 1842, twenty-two-year-old Elena is unmarried and prefers drawing flowers over love. When her father dies and leaves the family in debt, her mother insists the three women in the family go to Graham Springs so Elena can find a rich husband. There, Elena feels she is pursed by three men: an older-but-lonely general, a shyster artist wanting to head west, and a broken-hearted man scorned by his almost-to-be bride. As Elena comes out of her spinster shell, she must make a decision that is based on love not money.
~ Why ~ This is a quick, engaging read as it follows the women’s hopes, dreams, and passions. Since I am an artist, I enjoyed reading about the art aspect and the charm of the flowering garden. I appreciate the book promoted relying on God instead of oneself.
~ Why Not ~ Those who do not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ may not like the references to God, praying to Him, and His Word. Others may not like a story about several men fawning over women, but it mimics the times. I struggled with the comment about praying for a dead person.
~ Wish ~ Being a Christian read with God mentioned, the plan of eternal salvation did not include asking for the forgiveness of sin. I wish all pronouns of God were capitalized for reverence. Adding discussion questions might be helpful for book clubs.
~ Want ~ If you like a tender story how a young woman searches for love instead of money, this one paints an emotional portrait of pursuing what one really needs over wants.

“Keep looking for that next sunrise.”
-the PURSUIT of Elena Bradford, is a dear historical romance with a touch of mystery, faith, and a slow-burn sweet romance. It is filled with endearing and memorable characters that will have your attention and heart right from the start to ending, who in their own individual ways face great obstacles when it comes to matters of the heart and moving forward with expectations laid clearly out. Watching these dear characters handle and rise above such obstacles and challenges with grace was heartwarming. I adored seeing characters stand true to themselves and in choosing to not settle for less than lasting and true love! The friendship and love that slowly takes root and blooms into something even more lovely was beautiful! The mystery along the way added in another layer of depth to this story and seeing where this story goes has my full attention. This is a dear story worth reading!i look forward to reading more from this new to me author!🩷📚🙌🏻

“I will never look at these roses the same. Now, in my mind, they will forever be Elena’s roses.”
It has been a long time since I have read a book by Ann H Gabhart and when I picked this one up I had no idea that I would be so excited the whole. I honestly didn't want the story to end. It is a beautiful historical fiction novel that not only has romance but a mystery as well. The fact that the mystery is based off of a incident in real life makes it more intriguing. Our main character Elena is struggling with the death of her father and her mother is in hysterics because he left a lot of debt. Her mother believes that their only option is for Elena to marry a wealthy man. However, Elena has seen the not so flattering side of marriage and children from those around her and decides that marriage is not for her. Her mother then decides to pack up Elena and her sister Ivy to go to this resort that has water with healing properties. At the retreat we are introduced to two young men who are immediately interested in Elena the first one is Kirby who is an artist and has dreams of going west. The second is Andrew who works at this grandfather's farm and he is going through a breakup from the previous year. However Elena's mother views both of these men below her station. Overall the resort is a wonderful place with relaxation and dancing. However, the relaxing atmosphere quickly disvolves when a unknown young mysteriously dies while dancing. The dr. claims that her heart gave out but Ivy may have witnessed a poisoning. With no information about the mysterious lady and the killer everyone is in a state of confusion. Will they be able to find the true cause of death? Will Elena be able to marry for love rather than social status. Overall this was quite the lovely read. I was very impressed with the characters and the plot. I look forward ro reading what this author writes in the future. I received an arc copy from Netgalley and all opinions are of my own.
I recently finished The Pursuit of Elena Bradford, and it instantly captivated me. This story started off with a run away stage coach and a dashing hero, and I knew instantly that this was going to be a good read.
Elena Bradford's mother has taken her and her sister to the Graham Springs Hotel for the sole purpose of finding a good marriage match for Elena to help the family from falling into poverty. Elena, at twenty-two, had resigned herself to a life as a spinster. Spending a lonely life with her sketching and her books. She didn't expect to find one suitor, never mind multiple. But more than that, she found a strengthened relationship with her sister. But, things are not necessarily all that they seem at Graham Springs Hotel, and Elena finds herself in fear of her life. Will anyone come to save her?
Pick up this book if you enjoy:
🎨 Historical Christian Fiction set in mid 1800s America 🎨 Romance 🎨 Mystery 🎨 Who will she choose 🎨 Surprise romance 🎨 Found family 🎨 Sister bonds
This book is full of rich descriptions of the beautiful Graham Springs Hotel and its gorgeous grounds, the nightly dances, and the eclectic mix of guests. I felt transported to the hotel and could vividly picture the nightly balls, the walks around the grounds, and the delicious food.
This was a story of believing in oneself, finding confidence, family, and friendship. The romances were sweet. The little bit of mystery towards the end was just the right touch to add some tension to the story and to open up the door for Elena to decide where her heart belonged.
I definitely recommend this book for fans of historical romance with some mystery.
