Murder--that's what photographer Allye Jessup knows she witnessed as she departed her studio one evening. Waking with bruises on her neck and a foggy memory, she believes she survived an attack, but everyone seems to think she simply sustained a head injury from falling down the stairs of her studio. Plagued by an undiagnosed health condition, she is torn between the haunting reality of what she may have seen and the possibility that her mind is playing tricks on her.
Without proof the other victim ever existed, Detective Eric Thornton can hardly declare the area a murder scene. Still, he adds Allye's report to his already full caseload. But when new evidence surfaces to support her claims, Eric must stay one step ahead of a ruthless killer and uncover the truth before the suspect closes in on Allye again.
Angela Carlisle once again presents cutting-edge romantic suspense laced with danger, deception, and justice.
SHADOWED WITNESS (The Secrets of Kincaid Book #2) by Angela Carlisle is a fast-paced Christian romantic suspense featuring a female protagonist who does not know if she can believe what she remembers about a murder she witnessed, or did she? This is the second book in the Secrets of Kincaid series, and it can easily be read as a standalone book.
Photographer Allye Jessup has always been a little clumsy, but lately she has had mysterious symptoms that are severely affecting her daily life. As she waits for further testing, she is leaving her office one night and believes she hears something behind her building. She gets off a scream before she is choked into unconsciousness, but when she wakes up, the mayor who finds her believes she just fell down her office stairs and knocked herself out. When she is attacked in her home, the story is so strange that even her friend, one of the town’s detectives, is having trouble believing her.
Detective Eric Thornton wants to believe Allye, but there is no proof at either scene and he is consumed with other cases. When a body surfaces in a shallow grave in the park, it appears to have evidence that proves Allye’s story. Could Allye have seen more than she knows and really be in danger?
This is a page turner full of suspense and unknowns. Allye is dealing with mysterious health issues and does not want her family to worry, so she is bearing the burden alone until she is diagnosed, but it also puts her in even more danger. Eric has his own problems not only with his workload, but with family trauma while growing up. Even with all their personal problems, they feel an attraction and the threats to Allye make Eric more protective. This is a Christian romantic suspense and with Allye’s health issues there are no sex scenes. The suspense is constant and kept me turning the pages. I only guessed part of the crime plot conclusion and the solution to Allye’s health problems was a surprise until it was suggested as a cause.
I recommend this second Christian romantic suspense in this series and look forward to more.
Another great read by Angela Carlisle! I am really enjoying her writing style and this series.
Read if you enjoy: - Christian romantic suspense - Unknown Illness Mystery - Childhood Crush/Friends to More - Friend's Sister Trope - Lost Memories - A Crime that "Didn't Happen" - Protective Hero - Small Town Secrets
This book was really fast paced with a good balance of romance. From the first chapter, you are drawn into Allye Jessup's world....she is a photographer who believes she's witnessed a murder, yet wakes up bruised, disoriented and without proof. She is the sister to Bryce Jessup in book 1 and we see Bryce and Corina a bit in this one too from book 1.
Allye reports the incident to local police, which brings in Detective Eric Thornton to take the case. He cares for Allye and is very protective of her throughout the story, as he can tell something is going on with her. Allye has been through a lot lately with her health as well - a mystery illness with some series brain fog and memory issues. This leaves her second guessing what she saw but as things continue to get even more weird....she knows it couldn't be her mind betraying her. She realizes soon this is the real deal.
What I appreciated most was the way the story handled doubt....both in her mind and in faith. Allye’s struggle with her health and memory made her a more layered character and the inclusion of those internal battles added depth to the threats she faced. I was proud I guessed the bad guy and the reason for the medical issue she was having! (I never guess these things haha) I think I would have liked a little more of their romance bits together but overall I would recommend as a good Christian romantic suspense series! Looking forward to book 3 next year!
Thank you to Bethany House Fiction for a copy to honestly read and review. All thoughts are my own.
“Maybe the more important thing is that we do the hard work and let God mend those broken places.”
Ever been torn between the reality of what you may have seen and the possibility that your mind is playing tricks on you?
I’ve been there. It’s an awful feeling when loved ones doubt what you’re sure you saw or experienced…and then the doubt creeps in.
Freelance photographer Allye Jessup is struggling with an undiagnosed health challenge when she’s attacked for witnessing something. When someone she trusts disagrees with how events happened, Allye is almost convinced that the attack didn’t happen. Almost.
Carlisle highlights broken things, the need for trust, the burden of secret keeping and the struggle to ask for help. Watching Allye transition from feeling ill-equipped to trust (both naturally and spiritually) to someone who accepts help with grace was inspiring. I was encouraged by her determination to continue trusting in God regardless of what happens.
Carlisle delicately balances her faith thread with pulse-pounding action and real-life struggles to produce a compulsive sequel to The Secrets of Kinkaid series. Will Allye continue to be a target for what she knows or will she outrun her attacker?
I was gifted this copy and was under no obligation to provide a review.
I gobbled up Angela Carlisle’s debut novel, Secondary Target, and in the process I fell in love with the town of Kincaid, Kentucky. Two of my fave supporting characters from that book now get their own love story in Shadowed Witness – while dodging murder & mayhem, of course – so I was already excited about this one. Not only that, but Allye Jessup, whom you might remember as the sister of the hero (and BFF of the heroine) in Secondary Target, and Detective Eric Thornton have known each other for years, which gives this novel a hint of ‘friends to more’ – hello, one of my fave tropes! And then you throw in a character struggling with a mystery illness (which I totally related to) and some high-stakes suspense (which kept me on the edge of my seat)… Needless to say, I couldn’t put this story down any more than I could its predecessor.
The suspense in Shadowed Witness has several different elements in play – and it’s up to Eric, Allye, and readers to figure out what’s related, what’s real, and who’s responsible. Angela Carlisle brilliantly weaves Allye’s troubling (and increasing) health symptoms into the framework of the suspense to make those three r’s I just mentioned even more complicated. Did Allye really witness someone’s murder and then get almost strangled to death by the attacker? Or did she simply fall down the stairs of her photography studio and hit her head? The evidence (or lack thereof) has the police leaning toward the latter – but Eric isn’t quite willing to write off her claims just yet. After all, there ARE those bruises on her neck…but there’s also her foggy brain and other odd things about her behavior lately… This wavering reliability in Allye’s memory builds from there, as she’s attacked again (or maybe not), and creates a bit of a psychological thriller vibe in places. I loved it! It doesn’t hurt either that Eric and Allye have great chemistry, easy banter, and at least a basic sense of trust in each other, based on their long acquaintance. As their increased time spent together leads them to open up more, revealing deeper layers to their backstories and deeper feelings for each other than they realized, my love for their blossoming romance only increased.
Bottom Line: Shadowed Witness is a riveting sophomore novel from author Angela Carlisle, full of engaging characters, thoughtful depth, and nail-biting suspense! I loved spending time with Allye and Eric, as well as Bryce and Corina again and the other supporting characters I found compelling from book one. And boy did I ever identify with Allye’s medical journey, as well as the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual toll it took on her and the wisdom in letting people know when you need help. But it also lent an air of uncertainty to the suspense side of this story – CAN we trust Allye’s perspective on things? Wanting to see how this would play out (including whether or not her decidedly creepy attacker was a figment of her imagination) kept me glued to the pages just as much as the sweetness and swoons of Allye & Eric’s romance, the poignant personal subplots, and the meaningful faith threads did. Another fabulous read for fans of small town romantic suspense!
(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book)
This is my first Angela Carlisle book, and now I’m sorry I haven’t read book one in this series. Oh, it worked just fine as a stand-alone, but it was such a good read that I just want more.
This is an action-packed yet highly realistic book. Allye Jessup is dealing with an undiagnosed medical issue—which happens all the time—and she also isn’t believed when she says she witnessed a murder. Given that she was found unconscious at the bottom of some stairs and there’s no evidence of a crime, I can see why that would happen. Even though the time frame from beginning to end isn’t all that long, the romance works well because Detective Eric Thornton is her brother’s friend. So they’ve known each other a while; it’s not just adrenaline-fueled feelings.
I have to say, I thought I had Carlisle’s entire plot figured out from the get-go, but the writing was so good that I couldn’t put the book down. I stayed up until midnight finishing it, and I’m typically sound asleep by nine. The reason for the late night? Not everything was as it seemed. When things started surfacing about the reason for the crime and who was involved, I was caught off guard. That’s always the sign of a good book.
I liked Allye and Eric’s personalities. The way Allye would doubt herself, given the symptoms from her mysterious illness, and the way she leaned on God the entire time was very endearing. Eric has pulled himself together despite his background and upbringing and has a real understanding of the needs of others. They were really strong characters in their own way.
And, as anyone who has read one of my reviews knows, I’m a sucker for a good epilogue—and this is one of the best. If you enjoy Christian romantic suspense, friends-to-more, small-town mysteries, or medical mystery tropes, you will enjoy this book.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, which I received from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
I'm really enjoying this mystery series by Angela Carlisle. Fun mysteries with suspense and interesting storylines.
I liked the photography background of the main character, although I wish we saw more of that. I did guess quite a but of the storyline but still enjoyed the reveal.
The suspense pace was well done and kept me reading til the last page. I enjoyed the main characters but didn't feel a connection with the male lead, but I still liked his storyline.
*Thank you to the publisher for a complimentary copy. All thoughts are my own. 3.5⭐
Allye Jessup witnesses a murder and then she passes out after one of the attackers strangles her. When she wakes up, the body is gone and no one believes her. While Allye is suffering from an undiagnosed illness, she knows what she saw.
A single mother found dead after an overdose. She left behind two sons. One of them is on the run.
Detective Eric Thornton is spread thin as the only detective in Kincaid. The drug dealers are counting on that.
It's a race against the clock to figure out who is wreaking havoc on the town through the sale of illegal drugs.
Engaging from beginning to end!
My gratitude to the author and publisher for a complimentary copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.
This book is definitely suspenseful. But as an adoptive mom, it also hit close to home. And that's all I'll say about that part.
But I loved the twists in this one. And it was more than suspenseful twists. There was gaslighting, which was really hard to read, but also Allye doubted herself quite a bit.
I really don't want to go too much into it because I don't want to ruin anything, but this is a great standalone 2nd book in The Secrets of Kincaid series.
Four stars because it did take me a little bit to get into it.
The Shadowed Witness is a fast-paced suspense novel that kept me on the edge of my seat. Allye was amazingly strong-willed for having health issues. Working through the sick times as well as doing work as a photographer left her unable to cope. That was before her life was in danger.
The storyline is filled with family relationships, unknown circumstances, danger, conspiracy, and a race to bring the criminals to justice. There are twists and turns, along with betrayal, but the ending wrapped things up nicely. The blossoming romance added tension as the relationship grew.
I received a complimentary copy from the author; a positive review is not required. All opinions are my own.
This was a really good Christian romantic suspense. This is Carlisle’s second book, but my first by her. I heard it would work well as a stand-alone, and it does, but it also has very strong connections to book one so I would suggest reading that one first if at all possible. I really enjoyed this story. Allye is a photographer who is struggling with some undiagnosed medical issues when she witnesses a murder and is attacked. When she regains consciousness the mayor is there and slowly things begin to take shape in this story as he doubts her word. With more questionable happenings - is she really experiencing things? Are things a byproduct of her medical issues? Enter Detective Eric! Eric is Allye’s brother’s friend and he takes over the investigation. As they spend more time together, a slow burn romance blooms. In between guns and break ins, photos, family, friends, and more, they confront fears in their own lives and discuss faith and forgiveness. This was a good read that had mystery and suspense. I’m patting myself on the back because almost everything I predicted came true! I’ll definitely be backtracking to read book one and continue the series next year when the last book releases. This is a just kisses romance, intimacy level 1. 4.5 stars rounded up to 5.
I received an ARC of this book via Just Read Tours and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
If I thought Secondary Target was good… Shadowed Witness upped the ante. Angela has written yet another page-turner, and this time, she amped up the romance, the mystery, and the suspense!
Allye has witnessed a murder… but with her health in question, no one is taking her accusations seriously, not even Allye at times. She begins to doubt what she saw. But when more incidents start happening and it becomes clear she’s being targeted, it’s up to Detective Eric to figure out what really happened. Did Allye truly witness something sinister, or is her mind playing tricks on her?
A mix of forced proximity and suspenseful twists starts to bring these two together, and I was absolutely here for it! I was curious how these two would make it through everything... but I was rooting for them!
This one was so good. Even though I predicted much of it, the balance between romance and suspense kept me hooked.
I gave this one 4.5 stars, rounded up to 5.
I received a complimentary copy. This review reflects my honest opinion.
Shadowed Witness is the second book in The Secrets of Kincaid series but could be enjoyed as a standalone without any issues as well.
This is only Angela Carlisle's second novel, but one thing is already abundantly clear--- she absolutely knows how to craft a story that will keep you on the very edge of your seat! Right from the start, this one drew me in with the action and sense of danger... twists and turns throughout kept me guessing as to exactly what was going to happen and what was truly going on. The addition of Allye's health issues was absolutely brilliant. Just as she is questioning her own mind, it adds that level of uncertainty to us as readers as well, not knowing for certain if these things truly were happening or not, and I absolutely loved that. Were there some twists that I suspected earlier on? Yes... but that didn't stop me of enjoying every second until those answers came out nonetheless. While I definitely felt like the suspense took the center stage in this story, I loved the romance between Allye and Eric too. If you enjoy Christian romantic suspense, this is definitely one worth checking out.
**ARC received for consideration. All opinions are my own.
Wow, there's not enough words for this book. 🤯 It was literally impossible to put down, but at the same time couldn't be read too close to bed or I just...wouldn't be sleeping. 😅 Everything about this author's books is just incredible. The strong faith elements really hits me hard, it's all said as if it was meant for me. It's all put so plainly like it's common sense...and it is.
Allye really touched me, everything about her. Her health issues, her struggles with her faith, with life, it was so inspiring. It really makes you want to reach through and try to help over and over, it all felt so real and raw. And Eric...was perfect. 🩷 The perfect guy, and perfect for Allye. The slow burn romance with the murder mystery really pulled this book altogether wonderfully.
If you enjoy a clean, contemporary murder mystery book, (without all the gore) then I highly recommend this one!
*I received an e-ARC copy, all opinions are my own
I am comparing my reading experience to that of which I had with the first book, which I absolutely loved. This one, not so much. This was one of my highly anticipated releases for the year and it felt incredibly slow compared to the first book. And slow pacing is not really what I want out of a suspense. The entire middle lulled for me and it took me 10 days to finish this, which is not normal for me. In my opinion, there were too many mundane details repeated. I understand that mundane details definitely have their place in a suspense/thriller/mystery in order to contrast the suspense and add definition or build-up to those more intense moments, but that is not the effect they had on me. I did not find this suspenseful, again, especially compared to the first book which I actually felt was thrilling.
There was nothing fundamentally wrong with the writing style or the content. And I thought the mystery illness aspect was creative and definitely contributed a layer of curiosity. The fact that Allye COULD have been an unreliable narrator as a result of her mystery illness was a fascinating element to me as a reader.
I'm interested in seeing where the next book lies for me between this one and the first. I was sent a physical copy to read and review, but these are my thoughts.
In this book: lost memories rekindled crush small town secrets undiagnosed illness targeted attacks detective/protective mmc photographer fmc
Content guide: romance - clean language - clean violence - non-descriptive and brief faith - light
Content warnings: off-page and/or past drug use/OD references regarding minor side characters diagnoses journey for concerning health symptoms regarding a main character
I was eagerly anticipating the release of this book after reading book one. I wasn't disappointed. Allye believes she witnessed a murder outside her studio but when there is no body and it appears she fell down some stairs, some don't believe her. The proof that something happened is pretty flimsy, but as more incidents happen it becomes clear to Detective Eric that something is going on, now if only he could prove it. Meanwhile Allye is battling a mysterious health illness, is sure of what she saw and has happened to her but like Eric she needs more proof. The story progresses at a good pace and had me questioning if I could figure it out. I did figure out some of it but not all. Near the end the final reveal felt like it came a little bit out of left field. The romance does not overshadow the main story at all, it was more in the background, but the ending felt perfect for them. I enjoyed seeing Bryce and Corine again getting a update on them and am eagerly looking forward to book three after reading the sneak peek provided.
When Allye witness a murder the murderer will do anything to quiet her. Affair to admit someone is after her and the cops at first don't believe someone is following her Detective Eric a friend tries to help her. They become close but even he can't save her. She must stand up to the attacker to save herself but will it be to late? Will Eric and Allye have a chance for romance? I did enjoy the book. I find many suspense novels follow the same formula and this one did as well, but I was entertained and gave it a 3.5 stars and definitely would recommend the book and the whole The Secret of Kincaid series!
This was an action packed novel from start to finish! I love Christian suspense novels, and this one didn't disappoint. While this book is in a series, it can be a stand alone. I didn't read book 1 in the series and was able to follow along easily. There is a mild romance going on in this book, no content warnings for my readers to be aware of. As a migraine sufferer myself, I enjoyed reading about someone who also deals with the same issue. I feel the author captured what living with migraines is really like, and I wondered if she suffers from them herself or if someone close to her does. This was a great fast paced novel. Thank you to Bethany House for sending me a copy for review.
WOW! I have been anxiously awaiting this novel and it was well worth the wait! Angela Carlisle weaves an amazing tale of suspense, intrigue and psychological thrills all into one. Allye Jessup knows she witnessed a murder but no one believes her. As she struggles with health issues she begins to doubt herself and what she is experiencing. Detective Eric Thornton takes the first call and questions Allye's story. When things escalate into continued attacks, will he put aside his doubts and seek the truth? Will Allye open up and share her struggles while trying to figure out who wants her dead? Can they work together to figure out the twists and turns before it's too late? This second novel in the Secrets of Kincaid series will keep you up waaayyyyy past bedtime but it's oh so worth it!!
After reading the debut by Ms. Carlisle, i just had to read this follow up and find out what happened to Allye. She saw something she was not supposed to and now someone is trying to scare her. But no one will believe her and she is starting to question herself. She is facing an undiagnosed health issue and does not want to burden her friends or family. Church friend detective, Eric Thornton tends to believe her when some things come to light and he strives to solve the mystery. This is a well paced, intriguing story that kept me guessing. I read it in record time because I had to see how things would play out. Lots of interesting twists and turns to ponder. Allye and Eric struggled with spiritual implications and practical ones, too, deciding to trust God completely, no matter what. They saw that God can use the worst of situations to help them grow. Eric was a great hero who was capable and showed a caring side when it came to foster kids. The romance was well crafted and respectful. Recommended for fans of Lynette Eason, Elizabeth Goddard and Dani Pettrey. *A complimentary copy of this book was provided by Bethany House on behalf of the author. “I’m a little broken, Allye. Maybe a lot broken. I’ve got a lot of baggage, and I’m jaded when it comes to trusting people.” “I’m broken too. I think everyone is to some extent. Maybe the more important thing is that we do the hard work and let God mend those broken places.” “Maybe you’re right.”
I’m speechless! This book was so fantastic! It’s overflowing with danger, suspense, twist & turns, faith, and a sweet romance. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough, I had to know how it all was resolved.
Allye is strong and determined. Her strength in dealing with her migraines and other medical issues was wonderfully presented. I enjoyed the little glimpses of Allye’s family and their relationships. Her strength and determination shine throughout all the twist and turns in the investigation. She wants to deal with EVERYTHING on her own. Until… Eric. Eric is caring, protective, and haunted by his past. His struggle with believing all that Allye encounters doesn’t change his protectiveness or concern for her. I loved when they opened up to each other and supported one another. I also loved the threads of faith woven throughout the story. The epilogue! 🫠😍 Y’all it was so very satisfying!!
A few more quotes: “Seriously. Your sister is way out of my league.” “Yes, she is. But I haven’t met a guy yet who is in her league.”
“I can stand.” “I know. It’s okay to accept help, you know.” “But it isn’t easy.” Her words were barely a whisper.
“You aren’t scared of werewolves?” “Not with a big strong detective by my side.” “You trust me to protect you? Against werewolves?” “Of course. And I’d take lots of pictures. Think of what the newspapers would pay for those kind of photos.”

This story starts with a bang and captured my attention from the first page. This is my first book to read by this author and it did not disappoint! There is an interesting twist to this plot that has to do with the main character that I was not expecting. But the mystery side of it was pretty predictable, as the clues made things fairly obvious. BUT it was still fun to see how it all played out and I really enjoyed reading how Eric and Allye solved the mystery. Allye is a photographer and the author did a great job portraying that point of view. It added to the story and helped me visualize the setting in a better way. Overall I really enjoyed this story.
Four Stars.
"I received a complimentary copy from the publisher for free. I was not required to write a positive review."
Shadowed Witness is an enthralling addition to the exciting Secrets of Kincaid series! I loved the first book in the series and had very high hopes for this one. It was everything I anticipated and more! Revisiting Kincaid, Kentucky, and delving into Allye's story was a deeply moving experience. The well-written, fast-paced plot, packed with page-turning suspense and mystery and imbued with faith, drew me in immediately and kept me reading intently to the very satisfying ending. Well-crafted, realistic characters are easy to connect with and cheer for. I admire Allye's strength and determination as she faces danger and the challenges of a daunting, undiagnosed medical condition. Eric is the ideal protective hero despite his own personal struggles. I enjoyed how their romantic relationship unfolded. I highly recommend this book for those looking for a riveting, emotion-tugging romantic suspense read. Note: Even though there are carryover characters in this book, it can easily be read as a standalone. I read an early copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley with no obligation to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Having already read a book by Angela Carlisle, I knew I had to pick up her new novel. Shadowed Witness is a fast-moving Christian Romantic Suspense, and the second book in The Secrets of Kincaid Series. I enjoyed Book One, Secondary Target, and I knew Angela Carlisle writes great suspense stories.
The main character, Allye Jessup, is a photographer who witnesses a murder. She’s attacked afterward and blacks out. The next day, she wakes up with very few memories of that night, and bruises cover her body. Luckily, she reports everything to the police. Detective Eric Thornton takes her case and also begins to look out for her. I loved the slow-burning romance that grows between them, especially since they were friends before.
Allye is also facing mysterious health issues she can’t explain, and some people think she's losing her mind. But she shows strength and determination through it all. The plot is filled with twists and surprises as the story moves forward. It keeps you guessing about who is behind the murder and when the threat will strike again. Along the way, they learn to trust God more deeply and lean on their faith. It's good to see character growth happening during hardships and how they overcome their problems.
Shadowed Witness is a wonderful inspirational romantic suspense. It features characters you can relate to and a mystery that keeps you hooked. The message of faith is clear and positive. Though you can read this book on its own, I recommend starting with Book One. I’m already excited to see what happens in the next book.
"As she edged toward the back of the building, she heard a 7 louder ka-thump as if something heavy had fallen. The sounds changed to a muted, almost rhythmic thumping. She reached the corner and peered around. Two men. One standing back in the shadows, watching. The second man delivered another savage kick to something— no, someone—unmoving on the ground. The blow left the fallen man’s head tilted at an unnatural angle. Allye sucked in a breath. The attacker swung around, chest heaving. Looked her straight in the eyes."
Allye loves her life as a photographer, but lately something has felt off. Her body does not want to cooperate with normal life demands. And when she witnesses a crime, she wonders how she is going to survive it all. Especially since no one really believes her.
Detective Eric Thornton is Allye's brother's longtime best friend. He wants to think that Allye is telling the truth about an attack. But the evidence does not support her report. Will he continue to investigate or dismiss her like everyone else?
This book is full of plenty of suspense, unexpected twists and turns and romance. Mystery is layered in with the danger as Allye tries to determine why her health is failing and if there are external causes. I guessed parts of the ending, but much of it was a complete surprise.
This is book two in "The Secrets of Kincaid" series. Characters do overlap. But I think this book could be enjoyed without reading the first book. But Secondary Target is worth reading first as it is a fantastic book.
I read this book for a launch team. I wanted to read and review it. All opinions are my own.
Allye Jessups witnesses a murder in an alley outside her studio, but no one believes her. As weird things continue to happen to her and evidence keeps getting brough to the surface, Eric Thornton is slowly forced to believe her. From near kidnappings, death threats, to almost getting shot at, the action never stopped! If you love romantic suspense than this book is for you! This book can be read as a stand alone, but I am gonna read book 1 because this book was just so good!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion
I definitely couldn’t put down this second book in Angela Carlisle’s Secrets of Kincaid series! I read the first book earlier this year and I’ve been so excited for Allye’s story ever since. This book definitely lived up to the hype in my mind! As Allye’s body betrays her, she’s starting to wonder if maybe her mind is betraying her too. But thankfully local detective Eric believes her- at least that something is going on! Allye and Eric’s pursuit of the truth exposes something much bigger than the murder Allye witnessed and threatens to permanently silence her- and all she holds dear.
I loved how Allye and Eric found their way to each other. It felt well-paced and authentic. Not without bumps, but those hard conversations really made their relationship believable. There were so many mysteries to unravel- it was a suspense reader’s dream. I also liked the drama of finding out what was actually going on with Allye’s health. Also Eric’s journey to forgiveness and how they both leaned into their faith at different points in the story.
Angela Carlisle is one of my new favorite voices in romantic suspense and I can’t wait for the third book in this series next summer, which unfortunately seems way too far away!
I received a complementary copy of this book from the author and publisher. I was not asked to leave a positive review and my opinions are my own.
After meeting Allye in the book Secondary Target, I have been awaiting her story. Shadowed Witness starts off with Allye being a witness to a murder. But when the police check the scene, there is no evidence to be found. Considering the unexplained health issues that Allye deals with and the mental fog, no one is sure what to believe, not even Allye. A series of other seeming threats, with no clues or evidence eventually make Allye wonder if maybe her mind is betraying her. Fortunately, the local detective and old family friend knows Allye well enough that he wants to believe her, especially when her life is threatened. As they join forces to solve the mystery, Eric quickly realizes there might be something much bigger going on, and even the safety of her family is at risk.
The author did a good job incorporating enough twists and turns to keep the reader engaged. I also enjoyed seeing the friendship between Eric and Allye blossom into something more. They both had their own personal issues to work through and we see that unfold as well.
I received an early copy from the author. All opinions expressed are my own.
Shadowed Witness by Angela Carlisle is a Christian Suspense. Allye is our MC and a photographer in the town of Kincaid. This town has so many secrets and one night Allye stumbles upon a few things she should not see and now has someone chasing her and trying to kill her. Enter Detective Eric who is trying to help two people Dion, a missing teenager and also Allye who he doesn't exactly believe all of her stories about the men trying to kill her. But then a body shows up and things start to add up for the Detective and Allye who is involved whether she wants to be or not. The book is fast moving and the plot is very engaging for a suspense/whodunit.I really related to Allye as a reader and was rooting for her and her health to see what was happening to her. I also loved the potential relationship between Eric and Allye too. I loved the ending of the book and how well the author wrote the book and I can not wait for the next book in the series!
I did not want to put this book down! The suspense started out exciting enough as Allye survived a vicious attack but then people didn't believe her and with the health problems she's been having, she started to question herself, too. But then another, even more confusing one happens and no one's sure of what's going on. I really felt for Allye as she had enough to deal with trying to figure out her health problems on top of just trying to survive them day to day, especially the debilitating migraines. Then you add on attacks and people questioning your sanity and the suspense was really ratcheted up! I liked that she wasn't a perfect character as she struggled with trying to do it all on her own; she was feisty and I loved how she stood up for herself verbally and physically when she needed to. Eric had an intriguing backstory as a son of drug-addicted parents who worked to put criminals behind bars, especially drug dealers. I liked that he was interested in giving back and getting involved in kid's lives, like someone did for him. He knew Allye from high school and was good friends with her brother so was inclined to believe her but needed evidence. When they kept getting thrown together, old crushes resurfaced. I liked seeing a peek into the investigations and also seeing Allye's artistic side as she took photos and knitted for an upcoming festival. Allye prayed throughout the story and Eric was a man of faith, also, but struggled with forgiveness. There were some sweet romantic moments. This worked well as a stand-alone but I look forward to reading book one about her brother. I would recommend this book!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. I was not compensated for this review. All opinions are my own.
Loved this second novel in the Kincaid series, although this can easily be read as a standalone. Allye is leaving her studio one night when she witnesses a murder, however when she comes to, she is told she must have fallen down the steps and hit her head. It seems no one wants to believe her and she just keeps getting told it’s her clumsiness. She has had some medical stuff going on, so maybe? But Allye knows what she saw. A few more incidents happened and it seems like many think she is just making this all up. A green glowing light? And each time she has been mostly unharmed just shaken up. Detective Eric Thornton feels something is going on but needs more evidence. So he puts all his energy in trying to figure out just what’s going on in his town and why Allye continues to be a target. As pieces of clues start to piece together, Eric realizes he better make sure he has everything 100% accurate before saying anything, as these crimes will run deep and include some very trusted people in the community. I really enjoyed this storyline. Lots of twists and turns and it all comes together in the end. Thank you to the author and publisher for the complementary novel and for allowing me to be a part of the launch team. This review is of my own opinion and accord.
